Last night, I decided I was going to watch In The Heart Of The Sea. I'm fully aware that it's a terrible movie, but I know I'll end up watching it eventually. My interest in boat cannibalism demands it.
However, when I typed the film's title into the Apple TV search bar, In The Heart Of The Sea came up... as did Moby-Dick and Life Of Pi. It was as if Apple TV was telling me, "hey, would you like to watch something that has similar themes, but doesn't suck?"

Watch Nimona, guys.
Watch Nimona and then go buy the comic and also read Nimona, cause as nicely streamlined as the movie is they did change the style quite drastically (proportions and stuff, I’m not on abt the 3D-ness or the adjustments to make characters visually fit their cast better) and Nate’s original art is GOOD, and they left out some things I really liked in the comic (where was big buff guy nimona you monsters ToT) and comic has slower pacing that lets you have some more time w the characters, yada yada
NIMONA GOOD, CONSUME NIMONA IN ALL ITS MEDIA FORMATS
#nimona#nd stevenson#I have been a nimona stan since long before either nd or me had our respective top surgeries#I own that shit in book format I need you to understand how FEW THINGS I own in physical formats#don't get me wrong: movie incredible very good#as good a movie adaptation as one could've made for it in terms of writing (and animation/visuals good too)#but alas#I am a comic person I must also preach abt the comic#I do also appreciate that 'letting the transmasc comic idiots have big movie budget for their stories' now has precedent#as that will come in very handy for my own career

finally got around to reading Mexican Gothic. It had me hooked and actually followed through (the buildup was good but I was worried the ending/revelation was going to fall flat. it held up though.) Anyway my take is that it felt like if a really good movie was a book. Like the story operated more on movie logic than book logic if that makes any sense. (not a criticism, just an observation.) Overall well done and well paced. Predictable enough to be coherent but mysterious enough to be compelling. There were a couple of elements that seemed a little clumsy to me, but forgivable in service of the whole. Would recommend if you want to read a book that feels like watching Crimson Peak or something
#Mexican Gothic#daisyreads#I think a movie adaptation could be incredible if done right#it saved me in a way because the last book I read was kind of a drag to get through and this one I crashed through in a couple days#Catalina was a more plot device than character but that's kind of hard to avoid given the nature of the story#and I could tell there was a real effort to characterize her so it's forgiven#also something I really liked about it was how I honestly had no idea if it was going to end well or not#they just felt so capital-D Doomed ///////////////spoiler////////////vv#that it felt like incredible mercy when all three of them actually made it out. as opposed to just the narrative#oug a little sensational—that's the genre lol—but at it's heart I think I liked how it dealt with the Themes#Noemí really said ''fix him? I'm going to undoom him from the narrative if it kills us all'' and good for her

Every Film I Watch In 2023:
255. Cujo (1983)
#cujo#cujo (1983)#2023filmgifs#my gifs#i've been terrified of this film#ever since i was old enough#to be told about it#but i read the book a few years ago#and it was incredibly brutal and desperately sad#but so so deeply written#this was actually a halfway decent adaptation#still not nearly as compassionate towards poor Cujo#as the actual novel#and it's not so easy to extrapolate#from the scenes that the poor doggo#is in terrible pain#and terribly sensitive to sounds#this felt much more like the attempted destruction#of the Murrican nukerler family#which was already corrupted when the movie starts#and wow they actually changed the most brutal aspect#of the ending#which i should have expected#they clearly decided American audiences#did NOT want to see that onscreen#despite the film being surprisingly faithful to the plot#if not the richness of King's narrative#but still good effort#those attack scenes really were terrifying#and bonus jerry hardin!

So with the news that Netflix has cancelled Shadow and Bone season 3 and the Six of Crows spinoff, I feel extra justified in supporting the changes made to the show, specifically the advancement of Kaz's revenge story and Wesper. (This also goes for the Wheel of Time show that I feel shares many similarities to the process of adaptation that S&B faces)
In this day and age, showrunners can't expect 7 seasons of 24 episodes anymore. They have to cram as much into the (shortened) seasons they do get as they possibly can - which is where I and so many others get the frustrating feeling that they aren't sitting in the moments as long as we want them to.
BUT, script writers are having to work within insanely small parameters which makes sprawling fantasy stories (specifically ones based on books and with heavy internal dialogue and a huge cast of characters spread out over the world) extremely difficult to tell without having to cut massive sections to streamline the story or fast track some things/make things much more obvious than is shown in the book (as the internal monologues take care of clearing up confusion in written media).
So the frustration with ending 'slow burn' romances in visual media, while objectively I agree that it sucks we don't get more time to explore the character's feelings for one another, I'd much rather have canon, on-screen Wesper than another 'queerbait' flirtation that those who haven't read the books could just interpret as two guys being pals. Both Jesper and Wylan are side characters to the side characters in the show - they just couldn't get as much time to develop their relationship as say, a show with only two main characters who are the slow burn romance.
I'm glad the Crows got their due in the show - I felt they were all so incredibly in-character even doing things that weren't in the books (as of course, the Crows weren't in the Shadow and Bone books at all) and I love that we got to see more of Matthias in prison and Kaz got his revenge on Pekka in a wonderfully book-accurate way.
People who want one-to-one on-screen adaptations with books seem to ignore the logistical factors showrunners face with their shortened episode counts and the threat of cancellation looming over just about every single first season a show gets now. (Honestly, it's a miracle that Wheel of Time got a 3 season deal to start with so the showrunners could plan out three full seasons to make their bid to keep going with the story as Shadow and Bone didn't even get that).
Should we demand better from companies like Netflix that continually cut budgets and axe shows despite their massive popularity so they can save money? Yeah, duh. But let's put our anger and frustration where it deserves: on the powers that be, not those who are desperately trying to write a meaningful story in those terrible conditions.
Kind of a huge part of the writer and actor strikes was against these practices that make it so difficult for artists to make a consistent living in conditions that can sustain art rather than just content. We've still got a ways to go, but in the mean time, I'm going to enjoy the work they are able to create and view it from a more grounded perspective, understanding that they have time, monetary, and casting constraints they've got to work within.
If you want slow burns, go to books where authors have an infinite number of pages they can stretch the romance out in and you get all the juicy inner dialogues. For now, slow burn anything isn't really possible in the visual media sphere - not ones that are guaranteed to come to fruition at least.
#shadow and bone#six of crows#soc#s&b#shadow and bone netflix#it seriously sucks that we won't get to see that soc spin off#they did such an incredible job bringing all the characters to life it's a real shame netflix sucks so bad#maybe fans have a chance to save the show like they have others but idk#at this point I don't mind writers fast tracking some character beats so we can at least get a taste of them on screen#if you want slow burn then books are always there for you to read#show/movie adaptations will always have to be fast tracked unless the book is just incredibly short#its just the way it is with our current constraints

Me and my wife: *hang out for 6 hours and stay up til midnight talking about our favorite things*
My wife: *leaves to shower and go to bed*
Me, 2 minutes later: *picks up phone to text her about the new movie trailer I just watched*
#original#I LOVE MY WIFE#romance#best friends#mad sleepover energy#we talked for over 3 hours about our respective novels-in-progress & she read me a moment in hers that made me weep w how beautiful it was#like if you know the 'I want to live!!!' moment in one piece it was like that but better#we also spent the entire day in the apt together as we do most days but generally we are co-working on separate things for a lot of the day#I also came up with a GREAT idea to strengthen the themes of her story and she came up with an EXCELLENT monster for mine#it's going to be so thematically appropriate and also incredibly cool and deeply anti-military~~~~#and it gave me the opportunity to include an incredible scene for the main villain#also the new Count of Monte Cristo trailer looks dope as fuck. fucking finally an Edmond that's not a white guy!!!#there's been dozens of adaptations of the book but none of them reflect the fact that in the book he is brown!#also I liked pretty much everything else I saw about the trailer. he is unbelievably sexy he is so hot I am a gay gay person#I love my fucking wife#and I had to update her about my good friend Count Edmond and his new movie adaptation!

#like i'm pretty knowledgeable about ww1 and desensitised to violence so its not necessarely the content that hit but. wow.#the way this movie was shot and orchestrated is flawless#the loss of innocence. the camaraderie. the pain. the despair.#so perfectly encapsuled in two hours of pure misery#its not a faithful adaptation of the book but man. i dont even care it was beautifully horrific#i finished watching it 1h ago and have not made a sound or moved from the bed since#everything seems so far away#really shook me to my core. incredible piece of media#I'm so so sad about Kat#all quiet on the western front#id love to talk about it forever#lu speaks

honestly i've been pretty much disappointed with media in general lately (insofar as movies and tv shows) BUT now that i actually have time to read again books have been more than making up for it lately. it's so odd to see so many remakes and prequels with bad writing when there's just SO many good, unique, FRESH stories out there no one has touched!
#not that every book needs an adaptation ofc#but it's just something i've noticed#i've been much more invested in reading than watching tv/movies#and it wasn't always this way#bc sometimes i have trouble with aphantasia and i can't always picture things clearly in my head#and i just didn't have the time like i did in highschool to read#but god the stories that have come out in the past 5-10 years? incredible!#and i'm not even halfway through what i want to read this year#book tag#makilah.txt

rosemary's sickly pale bony-faced sunken eyes look she gets from carrying the devil's baby is obviously Concerning but it's also literally what I look like when I have a particularly dissociative week. can't help but find it endearing in a weird way
#i read the book earlier today and now im watching the movie#so far it's a great adaptation imo#that line after the ritual where she says “i dreamed someone was raping me” was such a crucial addition!!!#also. the heavy handed religious imagery and the “am i forgiven father?” line#WHILE being tricked by her husband to have sex/a child with the devil...#incredible#sa tw

Ghibli failed, quite frankly, to adapt most of that book in any successful way.
Great movie if the whole thing where it's not actually Howl's Moving Castle doesn't bother you , but should've been "inspired by", not actual.
And now you've heard my least popular opinion.
ghibli failed to adapt this
#the book is one of my VERY favorites#and I cannot tell you#how deeply disappointed I was#when I saw the movie#it was ghibli!#he's great!#it should've been incredible!#and to most people it was! and that's GREAT#it's visually stunning#and what parts of the story he bothered keeping are still good#but I just... it's a terrible adaptation and would've been soundly criticized if it weren't ghibli#i said it

Brideshead Revisited is a book.
There's an apparently very good tv adaptation from the '70s or '80s with Jeremy Irons, that touches on themes of the book the movie doesn't explore. It might not have been the best example but an adaptation often differs significantly from its book and can be worth seeing in its own right.
Besides, I really couldn't read the book, not matter how hard I tried I never managed to make it past the first few pages
#the opposite of Vile bodies#the movie was incredibly boring I still can't figure out how they could make it that boring with such a cast#and with a book that is quite a pleasant read#also example is the Granada Holmes serie#I've read every Holmes book but it would be interesting to see them acted out#I've heard them acted out in the Bert Coules radio adaptation#I'm sorry but I really can't remember names and dates right now
