I'd love to know what movies get wrong about orphanages if you wouldn't mind sharing!
Oh, I'm so glad you asked!
So imagine all the movies with orphanages in them: Annie, Despicable Me, Meet the Robinsons*, Stuart Little, etc. The narrative goes like this. A bunch of poor orphans live in a home run by usually one person. When prospective parents come to visit, the children eagerly all line up, hoping to get picked! So exciting! The parents find the child they want, fill out a bunch of paperwork, and go home with their new child. There may be a couple bumps as everyone gets used to the new family dynamic, but they work themselves out by the end of the movie. Happily ever after!
Literally every single thing about that scenario is wildly incorrect. First off, and this comes as a surprise to most people, there aren't any orphanages in the United States. None.
Not many kids are orphaned these days thankfully, and if they are, there’s usually extended family or other arrangements previously made by the parents (like through their wills or godparents). If there’s truly no one that can take the kid, they’d be put into foster care and given an adoption worker along with their normal social worker.
The closest thing we have to orphanages are probably residential programs and group homes (which are basically a step down from residential and in a house with a smaller group of kids). I say they’re similar because they look it from the outside. A bunch of kids living together being cared for by adults who aren’t their parents.
That’s where the likeness ends, though. Kids in residential aren’t up for adoption. Strangers can’t go in and visit. The kids are there to receive extra care. They have something going on that make them too much to handle for their parents or foster parents, and it could be physical disability, behavioral issues, or mental health struggles. Most kids are in programs like that temporarily, though some live there for years. The adults that work there don’t live there. It’s a normal 40-hour workweek and many people work in shifts to make sure it’s properly staffed.
The government does line the kids up to show them off to prospective parents sometimes. They’re called adoption parties, and for some reason they’re held at Jordan’s Furniture store a lot. (Because they volunteer the space, I think.) There’s food and music and lots of kids up for adoption and lots of parents hoping to adopt.
Little kids tend to like them because they’re too young to understand what’s going on and, hey, lots of people to pay attention to me! Older kids HAAATE them. If they want to be adopted, then this is a great way to feel judged and rejected for a few hours. Most aren’t really excited about being adopted. Most kids’ birth parents are still alive, but their rights were forcefully terminated by the state. The kids can feel lots of things about this. Angry. Disloyal to their birth family if they want a new family. Scared of being hurt by the new family. Sad to leave their foster family. Still want to go home even if it’s not possible. It’s not a fun time.
Nothing concrete comes of these parties usually. Parents can talk to social workers afterward if there’s a kid that they want more information on, but it’s really the beginning of the process. There are other ways to begin that process. I’ve heard of teachers meeting a foster kid and wanting to adopt, or someone knowing a foster family taking care of a kid who’s up for adoption. Others simply talk to an adoption worker. I don’t know what the process is like for that. Quite often, foster families will take care of a kid and then adopt them. (That’s what happened to us. We fostered a newborn. He wasn’t up for adoption until he was two, and we were couldn’t even contemplate giving him up at that point.)
Sometimes, social workers will try to get prospective parents to meet kids without the kids realizing the adults are thinking about adoption, to spare the kid the worry and rejection. Once the parents have decided to move forward, there is paperwork, but I think it’s normal foster parent type paperwork because, surprise, you can’t adopt them yet. Kids have to live in your house for six months before you can adopt
Since most kids will be with a foster family before going to a pre-adoptive home, and they probably are comfortable there and attached to the family, the transition to the new home is gradual. They start out with visits for a few hours, then sleepovers. If the kid hasn’t figured it out already, they’ll let them know these people want to adopt them around this time. Some kids take it well. Some... don’t. Longer sleepovers, then finally they officially move in. This could be a couple weeks if the kid is already familiar with the adoptive family or longer if they’re particularly attached to the foster family.
If six months are up and things are still going well, the real paperwork can start. There are home evaluations, interviews with the parents, interviews with the children already in the family, psychologists determine if the adoptee is adjusted well and securely attached. I’m sure there’s a ton more that I don’t know about. It freaking takes forever. When you’re done, you have to go to court and have papers signed by a judge. I’m sure this is the best part of every judge’s day. There are smiles and pictures and kids happily banging the gavel to make it official!
Unfortunately, the issues that come from adoption are not all solved at the end of the 90-minute movie. My brother, who never lived with his birth mother and has only had us as his family, still has issues. I know a girl who was straight up abandoned by her mother. She’s got serious mental health and self-worth issues years later, even though she and family adore each other and they are so good to her and super supportive. On the other hand, some people have zero issues over it. They don’t know and don’t care about their birth family.
Some issues go away after time and love. Some people start out with no issues, but after a few months or years, things start to change. Their subconscious realizes that they’re not in danger, and this is a safe environment where they can finally start to work through the trauma they’ve been through, and suddenly they’ll start having mental health or behavioral problems, and sometimes they’re severe.
It’s sad, but occasionally adoptions fail. This is part of the reason for the six-month wait. Sometimes the kids have so many issues that the parents can’t help them and keep them safe. Sometimes the parents weren’t as good people as they pretended to be and should haven’t kids. Thankfully, this type. of thing is pretty rare. I’ve never met anyone who it’s happened to. Most of the time, kids are put into good homes with people who love them and help them heal from the things their birth families put them through.
TL;DR There aren’t any orphanages in the US. Adoption is very complicated and emotionally messy, but it’s great! I’m sorry not sorry I wrote an essay.
*I give Meet the Robinsons a pass. Lots of kids who are up for adoption or who have been adopted struggle with it a lot. For some, they feel worthless because their foundational belief about themselves is that not even their own mother wanted them. For others, they feel guilty about betraying their birth family when they start to love the adoptive family. Some are rejected repeatedly. Almost all of them have been deeply hurt in the past. Meet the Robinsons acknowledges issues like these and told the story of a boy who dealt with them in a healthy way, and showed kids that it’s okay for them to be happy, and made a very cute and imaginative movie out of it, and I love it for existing.

Sadly the reason I don't like The Geek Critique too much is that even when very aware of old 90s and 2000s fandom views, his own bias rooted in similar nostalgia still exudes in his opinions.
"Hey, look at all these comments in 1994 that note CD being convoluted, with 3K being a far better game"
Proceeds to act like it's the second best Classic game, despite having far worse issues than Adv 2's level design, and time travel being garbage
Same with the bias to and against Jam and 06 respectively
-Jam he's erroneously wrong on why it was made. It wasn't a love letter to unionize American and Japan canon, it was bluntly stated by Naka to be cuz Japan literally didn't know what Sonic was given absence on the Saturn, and Sonic in general not having good footing at all on Saturn. The other issue is the PC ports of CD and 3K already did that, by translating manual lore unlike Genesis release, so he accidentally discredited them, AND accidentally discredited Adventure in further unifying canon. It was just gushing praise for what is literally a game collection that barely swayed western views, instead reinforcing the shock when Sonic got green eyes because no one paid attention to his character design evolving after 1993
-06 similarly, negative biases against it fully, almost no positive mentioned. It was a 40 min rant on how Sonic's reputation died, when ironically as his notes on the fandom showed, the elitist mindset was already toxifying Sonic's rep before
He also completely missed on why fans and casuals jumped ship; the fanbase was 300% way too into a console rivalry that stopped being promoted after 1995. They also had the incorrect interpretation of Sonic being a sole lonewolf "bad dude". Noticeably Sonic 2 sold way less than 1 (7.55 vs 22.22 mil units) due to this and console packs, despite being a better game. The addition of Tails dissented them from the ad slam campaign for the public, and for those that stayed, then got lumped into Satam nostalgia as 3Ks release was split and delayed, and CD was on hard to obtain hardware. With 32x being a failure, and Saturn era not having much, these fans soon became elitist and rabid to Nintendo's successes, hung on to Sonic 1 and 2 very heavily, then also became rabid to themselves when some Weebs wanted to act superior in having exclusive stuff
Jam's compilation didn't help. They just got a compilation of stuff they already played to death, bar 3K
When Adventure came out, it did several things
-The casual public and fans not caring for Sonic 1994-1997 at all now are suddenly alienated to design, despite changing since 1993
-Satam and Archie fans now forced to accept that 1991-1993 US canon no longer mattered
-Weebs now no longer had exclusive access to unique stuff since canon was unified, localization differences aside
And finally, fans NOW had to give a cent to the game's story and character personalities
And so we ended with even more turmoil, which skyrocketed when Sega discontinued being hardware
So seeing Sonic on this killed many of the 90s/early 2000 crowd, and seeing Advance take cues from Adventure 1/2 hurt their """purist""" garbage opinions. Sprite comics dominated the web, elitist forums like Retro and Sonic Cult, even modding became elitist retro havens with this mindset
Heroes they glossed over it being made to appease them and attract newcomers, as they already made up their mind to hating new none 2D
Shadow was made to appease the gunho crowd, and failed
TCG is so very naive on how his own nostalgia affects his views, even the thumbnails progressively got more clickbaity and biased.
The fanbase ultimately will never recover, especially when Sonictubers just villify nostalgia bias, or blatant misinfo if it sounds convenient/coddles said nostalgia. Sadly no one can call him out; he's too big
TLDR: I find him mid and waddling in nostalgia
Anyway, how's your day?
I'm still processing the elections, thanks for asking 👍
It's undeniable that TGC is biased, that much is true, and he has all the hallmarks of an Adventure fan - his most recent Rush video basically starts with him complaining about the state of the franchise in 2005 lol. I can't think of a Sonic reviewer, or hell any reviewer in general, that is 100% fair and impartial. I judge how they come across with their bias :P for example, J has straight up admitted that he was one of the most influencial Youtubers in smearing the Meta era and its stories, and I can't stand Garrulous and his perpetually cynical tone as if he's forced to talk about Sonic at gunpoint, while I appreciate TGC and Implant Games for explaining themselves well and at least trying to motivate their opinions. (although apparently IG made a mess with his SA2 video, shame)
Admittedly I haven't watched all of his reviews, I skipped Heroes because I like the game enough and I skipped '06 because what else can you say about that one? And I didn't even know that he made a video about Jam lmao. Your explanation is very informative, thank you :)
I agree with your last paragraph. I think Adventure fans forgot how it was back in the 2000s when the "adults" were Classic fans and the Adventure fans were the kiddies with cringe tastes that didn't understand what Sonic was all about. So now they grew up, and it's their turn to make fun of the kiddies who like the Meta Era and don't understand what Sonic was all about. I'm tired of this "back in my day" attitude because it feels so myopic.

Glad for the reminder that sexism in medicine is alive and well.
At a time when the media is giving DOs a hard time, it's awful to see a brand (previously) loved by healthcare professionals taking a jab at my gender and profession.
Adapted from a post on Facebook:
10 Facts About Female Physicians
1. I have never read a book upside down
2. 76% of the United States healthcare workforce are women. 7.3% of physicians are D.O.s
3. I have been made to feel inadequate about wanting to balance work and family because of my gender, especially when compared to my male collogues with kids the same age as mine.
4. Women physicians are not paid equally as male physicians when compared for same hours/work
5. Patients often assume I am a nurse even after I explain I am a doctor. This happens because of gender bias. Physicians who are Black or POC are often assumed to be janitorial or kitchen services. This is because of racial and gender bias.
6. When supervising a male resident or medical student, families will always look to them even when I’m the one speaking. I’ve had male medical students give family the wrong information, and when discussing with the family that that is incorrect they state they trust “the doctor” more than myself.
7. I am a D.O. and have the same qualifications as my M.D. counterparts.
8. Young women in college are often told that medicine is too hard and encouraged to go into other fields.
9. 90% of women have experienced some form of discrimination, often targeted because of gender and being a mother.
10. If you see nothing wrong with this ad, you think it is funny or are quick to say that this must be a mistake - then you’re part of the problem. Yes, even if you are a woman.
I have spent my whole career fighting these issues and will continue doing so. Thanks for making my job harder, FIGS.

I Knew It (Chicago Med)
25 Days of Christmas - Day 14
Chicago Med
Will accidentally tells Y/N about his feelings for her during a very busy and rather dangerous shift on Christmas.
Warnings: Mentions of a shooting, hostage situation
Requested = Yes
I’m not a doctor nor do I have any knowledge in the medical field so the medical stuff is probably going to be incorrect.
“I swear, this is the Christmas magic,” You said bitterly after Maggie announced that another incoming was en route, “Aren’t people supposed to be at home with family or whatever?”
“You aren’t,” Will pointed out while you guys waited for the ambulance to arrive.
You rolled your eyes, “I know that doofus, but I would be if I didn’t have to work.”
“Look alive people!” Maggie yelled and you and Will rushed over to the stretcher that was being rolled into the ER. “You’re going to Baghdad.”
“What do we have?” You asked, jumping into action.
“John Doe, multiple GSWs to the abdomen, hypotensive, intubated on field,” The paramedic told you, “BP 60 over 40, HR 90. Most of the shots are through and through but there’s one bullet still in there.”
You nodded, “Alright, transfer on my count.”
With the help of the paramedics and Will, you guys moved the backboard off of the stretcher and thanked the paramedics before they cleared the room.
“April, hang two units of o-neg,” You ordered, “Let’s get a fast scan over here!”
After determining that the bullet had hit an artery, you quickly booked an OR and had John Doe rolled up before planning on getting scrubbed.
“Excuse me,” A man stopped you as you were leaving Baghdad, looking rather frantic, “Do you know by any chance if my brother came in? Brown hair, brown eyes, he was shot.”
That fit the description of John Doe.
“I do believe I know who you’re talking about,” You said, “I’ll have April over there fill you in everything that’s happened but if you’ll excuse me, I have to scrub in on his surgery.”
It happened so fast that you didn’t even really know what happened but next thing you knew, the man claiming to be John Doe’s brother had yanked you back into Baghdad and had pressed a gun to your head.
“Whoa!”
“Stay still,” The man hissed, pressing the gun tighter against your head.
You obeyed and raised your hands slightly.
“Look, I get that it’s difficult but if you don’t let me save him, he is going to die,” You tried to reason, keeping your voice as calm as possible.
“He’s not my brother!” The man screamed, “Who do you think shot him? Who do you think wants him dead?”
You swallowed hard, your heart thumping so loudly that you were sure all of Chicago could hear it.
“Why do you want him dead?” You asked, taking deep breaths.
“Get back!” The man ignored your question and took the gun off your head and waved it at the nurses and doctors who had gathered around at the scene.
“Hey!” You yelled, “Point the gun back at me...now, listen...what’s your name?”
You couldn’t help but wince as you felt the cold barrel dig into the side of your forehead once again.
“Peter...” The man said quietly.
You took another deep breath, “Okay...Peter...tell me why you want that man dead.”
The gun shook against your head while Peter contemplated answering your question or not.
“He killed my little sister,” Peter finally said, “He killed my sister.”
“Peter, I’m so sorry,” You told him genuinely, “But Peter, listen, are you really going to let him get off the hook that way? By dying? Is that really going to bring your sister justice?”
You could still feel the trembling of the gun against your head while Peter comprehended your words.
“Answer me Peter,” You demanded, being rather bold considering he pretty much had your life in his hands.
“No...” Peter finally said, “But he deserves to be dead! He deserves to know how it feels to die!”
“Maybe so...” You closed your eyes briefly, “But that’s the easy way out Peter...you know that.”
When Peter didn’t say anything, you decided to keep talking while you still had the chance.
“Let me go Peter,” You told him calmly, “Let me go keep him alive so that he doesn’t get to take the easy way out.”
“He killed my sister,” Peter whispered.
You nodded, “I know...I’m so sorry Peter.”
You felt the gun drop from the side of your head before a tiny push shoved you out of the room.
There was a bunch of chaos as the cops closed in on Peter and you were whisked away by a pair of strong arms.
“Don’t shoot him!” You screamed, fighting the arms, “Don’t kill him!”
“It’s okay Y/N.”
You were subconsciously aware of being led into the doctor’s lounge and being sat down on the couch.
“John Doe,” You numbly said, “I need to get to the OR. John Doe.”
“Dr. Marcel’s taking care of it.”
You looked to your left and was slightly surprised to see Will, looking at you with soft eyes.
“Oh...” was all you were able to say.
“The surgery’s going to well so far,” Will told you.
You nodded, “That’s good.”
Suddenly, the rush of everything that just happened quickly caught up to you and you burst into sobs.
“It’s okay...you’re safe now,” Will murmured as he wrapped an arm around your body and pulled you closer towards him.
“Oh my god,” You shook your head, as you suddenly felt better, “I don’t know what’s going on.”
You did know. You were coming down from an adrenaline rush and it was playing with your emotions.
Will knew that you knew that so he didn’t say anything as he still held you.
“I was so terrified,” You admitted before letting out a strangled laugh, “Never thought I would be in a situation like that before. Guess it’s just another check off my bucket list.”
“I was terrified too,” Will mumbled and you looked up, an eyebrow raised.
You scoffed, “Yeah right.”
“I was,” Will looked at you, a dead serious expression on his face.
Your eyes softened, “Really? Why?”
“Because I love you.”
You had to do a double take, resulting in a rather long and awkward pause.
“I mean-”
You cut Will off, “Shut up Ginger.”
Will thought that meant you were mad at him but you weren’t so he was utterly shocked when you kissed him.
You weren’t sure how long you two would have been kissing if Maggie hadn’t interrupted you guys.
“I knew it.”
You looked over at the door, where Maggie was standing, a smirk on her face, and blushed furiously.
“You did?” Will asked, “You knew I liked Y/N and you didn’t think to tell me that she liked me back?”
Maggie shrugged, “I wanted to see how long it would take for her to tell you herself.”

What paganism is not
In my last post, I talked about what makes a person or a religion pagan. In this post, I’d like to clear up some common misconceptions about paganism. Some of these may seem like common sense, but I promise all of these are things people have said to my face after finding out that I identify as pagan.
So, for the record, paganism is NOT…
… a Christian heresy. As I mentioned in my last post, the traditions that modern paganism draws inspiration from predate Christianity — some of them by several thousands of years. Paganism is older than Judaism, the oldest Abrahamic religion, and may even predate the concept of monotheism. (Zoroastrianism, the first monotheistic religion, is believed to have originated about 4,000 years ago. Sumer and Egypt, two of the first civilizations, had established “pagan” religions about 6,500 and 5,000 years ago, respectively.)
To be a heretic, a person must 1.) believe in Christian dogma, and 2.) knowingly violate that dogma. Someone who is not Christian, practicing a religion that predates Christianity, cannot be a heretic.
… dark or scary. When some people hear the word “pagan,” their mind immediately goes to dark-robed cultists sacrificing babies in the woods. This idea dates back to the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, when a wave of religious and moral panic swept the United States. Some of the things targeted as threats to Christian values were: Dungeons & Dragons, metal music, and yes, paganism. (Ironically, all things I absolutely love. Take from that what you will.) The misconceptions that began in the 1980s unfortunately still haunt modern pagan communities.
I hope we can all agree that occasionally rocking out and/or playing D&D does not make someone a bad person. Neither does being pagan.
In reality, most pagans are pretty chill people, and most pagan religions have some sort of code of ethics that forbids doing unnecessary harm to others. You’re much more likely to find pagans holding a healing circle in someone’s living room than performing dark rites under a blood moon.
That’s not to say all pagans are perfect, or that bad people can’t be pagan. Every group has a few bad apples, but the actions of these individuals does not reflect the attitudes or practices of the group as a whole.
… all about sex. Another negative stereotype is that pagans are obsessed with sex and/or perform deviant sex acts are part of their religious rituals. This misconception has unfortunately resurfaced in the last few years with the rise of far-right conspiracies like the Q-anon theory. (Which I hope I don’t have to tell you is bullshit.)
While it is true that pagans are much more open about sex than, say, Christians, most pagans see sex as just a normal part of human life. Even the groups of pagans who believe sex is sacred tend to keep it behind closed doors. Some Wiccan covens do include a ritual representation of the sexual union of God and goddess in their rituals, but it’s nothing more explicit than a knife being lowered into a chalice.
Pagans aren’t more or less obsessed with sex than any other group of people, but they are generally more accepting of it. Because sex has no negative moral implications in pagan faiths, practitioners may feel more comfortable or confident in their sex lives than those who believe sex is sinful. In my mind, that’s a good thing.
… a system without ethics. Some people are attracted to paganism because they come from a strict religious background and believe that pagans can do whatever they want without consequences. This misconception can lead to frustration when they learn that pagan faiths, like all religions, have rules.
As previously mentioned, most pagans have a clearly defined moral code. It may be as simple as “harm none” or a complex system of rules and rituals. Either way, the point is that pagans follow rules, even if they may not be exactly the same rules as other religions.
… only for hippies. On the opposite side of the pop culture spectrum from the “scary cultist” stereotype is the stereotype of pagans are tree-hugging hippies. While it is true that pagans tend to care deeply about the environment, to say that all pagans are hippies would be an overstatement. There certainly are pagans who fit this stereotype, but for the most part pagans look just like everyone else. Which is to say, you can’t tell their religion just by looking at them.
… New Age. Paganism and New Age spirituality are two different things that often get confused or conflated in pop culture. The two movements are actually quite different, although some pagans may also be involved in New Age practices.
Paganism is based on pre-Christian religions from Europe and North Africa. New Age spirituality was largely inspired by alternative spiritual movements of the 19th century, such as the New Thought movement, the Theosophical Society, and spiritualism. Core New Age principles include the Law of Attraction, the belief that all humans are spiritual beings, and the idea of universal life energy.
Some of these ideas are also present in some (but not all) pagan religions, but pagans and New Agers tend to take very different approaches to spirituality even when they have similar beliefs. I like to think of it this way: pagans take a “bottom up” approach, while New Agers take a “top down” approach. For pagans, spirituality is built on daily practices, rituals, and connections with the world and the people around us. New Agers have a much more cosmic mindset and tend to view everything through the lens of their soul’s journey. (Hence the popular New Age saying, “You are not a human being having a spiritual experience. You are a spiritual being having a human experience.”)
Neither of these approaches is necessarily better than the other, but they speak to different personalities and different spiritual needs. In practice, they look very different.
If you’re interested in New Age spirituality, a series on paganism may not be of much help to you. Instead, you may want to look into books by authors like Deepak Chopra and Louise Hay.
… a way to rebel against your conservative family. In the 1990s and early 2000s, an author called Silver Ravenwolf made her name by publishing books about neopaganism marketed to teen girls. These books are extremely controversial among pagans, even today. Ravenwolf’s boooks are unfairly harsh (not to mention factually incorrect) in their depiction of Christianity, encourage readers to lie and manipulate people, and contain a lot of revisionist history. They also put paganism and witchcraft on the map as the hot new way to stick it to your parents.
I’m not saying you can’t be pagan if you’re a teenager or if you still live with your parents. (Hell, I was a teenager living at home when I first started reading about paganism.) What I am saying is that you should take an honest look at your motivations in practicing paganism. Are you genuinely attracted to pagan beliefs and values, or are you attracted to the mystery/edginess associated with it? If it’s the latter, there are lots of ways to explore the dark side without appropriating someone else’s religion.
… a trend or a phase. This is a new development that, honestly, I think is 90% Instagram’s fault. Certain influencers just make being pagan look so good. Capitalism has fully latched onto the pagan aesthetic, and you’ll find no shortage of retailers selling expensive knick-knacks for your altar.
For the record, I think experimentation is healthy. After all, the only way to find out if a religion works for you is to try it out for a while. But again, I think this comes down to intention. If you’re genuinely attracted to what pagan religions have to offer, then go for it. But if you’re more interested in posting cool photos of your altar setup, you don’t need to be pagan to do so.

Interesting to see some semblance of Soleil discourse again. I hated her when i played fates, and was genuinly surprised that people really loved her. Do you think a lot of her shittier aspects were from Fates' shoddy translation, or was she always sort of bad?
Sorry for this taking so long! I figured I might as well make this a sort of definitive post about Soleil since I talk about her a lot, so I put some more research and effort into it than I initially planned.
Soleil’s writing does have a lot of differences between the Japanese version and localization, but I have many, many issues with both.
Japanese Soleil
Soleil in the Japanese version of Fates is, to put it simply, a train wreck. As we know, her defining trait is her love of girls. However, with Soleil it goes past attraction and flirting into outright predatory behavior.
In many of her Japanese supports, Soleil creeps around girls, be it generic girls off-screen, or her female support partners. She hits on her mother in their support, she plans to sneak behind girls and embrace them out of nowhere in her support with Ignatius, and she harasses Ophelia and planned to get a better look at the latter’s figure in the tents when they switched bodies.
But the absolute worst was her Japanese support with Forrest.
Basically, she’s chasing Forrest around because she’s convinced he’s a girl, despite him telling her over and over that he isn’t. Soleil is extra creepy in this one, saying things like “I can’t hold myself back anymore” and “I won’t do anything bad, so just give in.” Forrest goes so far as to even compare her to a wild animal stalking its prey.
Forrest then tells Soleil once again that he’s a boy, and what does she do? She asks him to prove it by getting naked and bathing with her. Forrest, of course, refuses again. Soleil then finds out from others around camp that Forrest was telling the truth; but she still can’t keep her urges down and keeps making unwanted advances and touches towards him.
That entire support is extreme sexual harassment. It is one of the worst supports I have ever read, especially since it’s played for laughs and it can later advance into an actual relationship between them. Treehouse did realize how bad this support was, and changed it from the ground up into something completely different, which is one of the very few things I will thank them for.
Now, localized Soleil is another beast entirely. Before going into my issues with her localized version, I’ll explain the context behind her trope.
A History Lesson
Soleil’s character at its core is based on the Class S trope. Class S is a Japanese term describing romantic friendships between girls. It’s origin and popularity is owed to things like western women’s literature (such as Little Women) being translated for Japanese audiences back in the early 20th century and the all-women Takarazuka Revue theater being established; these helped cultivate feelings of sisterhood and a sense of romance for young female audiences, especially since most schools at the time in Japane kept boys and girls separate. While there was a decline in the Class S genre after Japanese schools became more co-ed, it has made a resurgence in popularity ever since the late 90′s with light novels like Maria-sama ga Miteru.
Class S had a rather big impact on Japanese society, where it was actually expected to happen and treated as something wonderful for these kinds of close friendships to develop between young girls.
However. These aren’t treated as real romantic relationships. They’re seen as nothing more than a phase. After adolescence, girls are expected to ‘mature’ or ‘graduate’ in a sense, into a real relationship with a man. To still have Class S relationships with other girls when you’re supposed to be in a “real” relationship is seen as a sign of immaturity.
Soleil Herself
So what does this mean with Soleil? Lots of her supports in Japanese have other characters being bewildered or even annoyed by her continued love for girls, because “she’s technically an adult now, shouldn’t she have grown out of that phase?”
Shigure gets surprised that she’s trying to learn how to sing to impress girls. F!Corrin wonders why she won’t give up her mindset already. Soleil gets jealous of Asugi’s popularity with girls and childishly tries to imitate him. Sophie says she doesn’t have time for Soleil’s antics because the former is trying to be a mature, devoted knight. Ophelia is frustrated that they can’t be “normal” friends instead of Soleil chasing her around and proclaiming her love.
They treat her obsession/love for girls as something childish for an adult woman like her to still have, much like Japanese society does. Soleil is Class S.
Soleil does actually get a chance to technically grow out of this phase, much like adult women are expected to. She ‘graduates’ into adulthood once she becomes romantically involved with her male romance options in the Japanese version; a “real” relationship.
As a gay man, you can probably guess how I feel about this trope. While it has had impact on helping Japan ease up on its more conservative beliefs and lots of Class S media has been created by actual queer women (like Nobuko Yoshiya), it’s still not a great feeling when same sex relationships are basically treated as not real or just a phase in someone’s life. It sucks, especially when I think the Japanese Rhajat/F!Corrin support is one of best in Fates. But enough about me, what does this have to do with localized Soleil?
Where The Localization Fumbled
Since she was already getting her fair share of controversy thanks to the many incorrect reports of conversion therapy during her support with M!Corrin, Treehouse decided to go the whole mile and rewrite some aspects of her character. This included removing the Class S aspect of her, and adding in a line from Laslow (as well as her roster description) that basically confirms she’s bisexual.
Except... they messed it up. They made her apparently bisexual, but they removed the romantic aspect of almost all of her S supports, all of which are dudes. Instead, most of her S supports result in promises of friendship or partnership of some kind. The only romantic S supports she has in the localization are with M!Corrin because Avatar privilege, and Forrest, which can still kind of be taken as platonic.
This doesn’t make sense. Why go out of your way to make Soleil bisexual, but remove her romantic supports with dudes? Her wlw side isn’t suddenly erased if she were to marry a dude, what’s the deal here? Did two different people have a hand in this and just didn’t communicate? Did one intend to make her a lesbian and the other wanted her to be bi?
This is a huge inconsistency and fumble on Treehouse’s part, one of their biggest. Hell, besides that, they didn’t even remove all of her creepy aspects either; she still creeps on girls in her Ignatius support (she now plans to pinch them instead of embrace them from behind), and while her support with Ophelia was toned down, it still isn’t great. Why go so halfway on this, especially since she’s the most controversial character in the game?
Conclusion & Overview
So yeah, those are my thoughts about Soleil. Her Japanese characterization is a predatory mess and based on a trope which I am not fond of whatsoever, while her localized characterization is only somewhat better as a person and is plagued by a whole slew of new writing problems because her bisexuality just wasn’t done correctly by Treehouse.
Which honestly? It makes me kind of sad. Soleil has a lot of good things about her. I like her shamelessness, her confidence. Her shyness is basically an inverse of Olivia’s, where the latter is shy all the time except when dancing whereas Soleil is only shy and insecure when dancing; it’s a neat full circle for the entire family line. She has a couple of great supports too, like with Laslow and Kiragi. Her design is adorable, she’s a good unit, female mercenaries are always a plus, and her new voice actress in Heroes is one of my favorites.
It’s just everything else is... bleh.
I don’t dislike her as much as I did a few months ago, because looking over her supports again endeared her to me a little, but unfortunately she still has too many things about her that I hate for me to say anything better than that.

The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix
Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern-flavored supernatural thriller set in the '90s about a women's book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger who turns out to be a blood-sucking fiend.
Patricia Campbell had always planned for a big life, but after giving up her career as a nurse to marry an ambitious doctor and become a mother, Patricia's life has never felt smaller. The days are long, her kids are ungrateful, her husband is distant, and her to-do list is never really done. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a group of Charleston mothers united only by their love for true-crime and suspenseful fiction. In these meetings, they're more likely to discuss the FBI's recent siege of Waco as much as the ups and downs of marriage and motherhood.
But when an artistic and sensitive stranger moves into the neighborhood, the book club's meetings turn into speculation about the newcomer. Patricia is initially attracted to him, but when some local children go missing, she starts to suspect the newcomer is involved. She begins her own investigation, assuming that he's a Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy. What she uncovers is far more terrifying, and soon she--and her book club--are the only people standing between the monster they've invited into their homes and their unsuspecting community.
This book has a lot of spicy opinions surrounding it. Some people loved it; some people hated it. I thought it was alright.
The protagonist, Patricia, is a typical Southern wife. She stays home, tends to the children and house, and is an active member of a local book club. Some strange stuff starts to happen in their sleepy, safe little town and Patricia is convinced the new neighbor in town has something to do with it. Hijinks ensue. This book is funny, it’s gory, and there are parts that make you really question some things but overall, it was good.
If you’ve read it, continue below, otherwise….I’m giving this one 4 stars. I liked it but it did have some issues.
***Some Spoilery Stuff***
I want to give my thoughts on the notion that the book is racist and sexist. This is a work of fiction. Yes, the fact that the men so obviously discredit the women sucks. I would never allow my spouse to treat me that way. Yes, the fact that the poor children were all black children sucks. Anyone can be poor. Hendrix should have done better on that front. But again, this is a work of fiction. To say these poor children do not have more freedom/less supervision is incorrect. It makes sense to me that the first children affected by this monster would be those whose parents are paying less attention to them. That’s not incorrect. Maybe the stereotypical Southern housewife troupe is wrong but, again, fiction. It’s not different in my eyes than showing New Yorkers as pushy corporate types or people from So-Cal having “surfer” accents and being airheads. I will not be offended if someone writes a book about a 30-something white mom from the suburbs who drinks Diet Coke constantly, because that’s what I am. If that’s what you are, then that’s what you are. The author doesn’t state “all women are like this”.
Grady Hendrix is an American author, journalist, public speaker, and screenwriter known for his best-selling 2014 novel Horrorstör. Hendrix lives in Manhattan and was one of the founders of the New York Asian Film Festival.

Synapse XT Reviews-This New Tinnitus Hearing Supplement
Constant ringing and buzzing in your ears can irritate and limit most areas in your life. This ringing in the ears may be due to an underlying condition that causes tinnitus which can cause serious health concerns if not treated early.

What is tinnitus
Have you experienced piercing or clicking in your ears when you have no external voice? It may very well be a symptom of tinnitus. You can experience these sounds in one or both ears which become ugly over time.
There are two types of tinnitus.
Thematic tinnitus - This type of tinnitus appears as a result of damage in your auditory nerves or the interpretation of your brain. Only you can hear this type of tinnitus.
Objective tinnitus - This is a rare type of tinnitus that only a medical examiner can hear when conducting an examination. A problem in your middle ear is the most common cause of this type of tinnitus.
Many causes cause tinnitus, including age-related problems, cell damage to your inner ear, prolonged exposure to loud voice, blockage in your earwax, and many more.
If not treated early, tinnitus can become a problem. You need to take regular supplements to manage the symptoms. Synapse XT is sure to target the root cause of tinnitus and eliminate signals from your body.

Your listening system is responsible for the quality of listening you get to experience. The delicate auditory nerve receives and is responsible for signaling the brain to the various sounds received.
The sound of shouting in your ear can prevent blood from reaching the cochlea, causing inflammation that is responsible for the buzzing. The brain then interprets this as an incorrect signal resulting in tinnitus.

If the Incorrect Smash Bros Quotes (ISBQ) crew did a rendition of NerdOut’s Infinity War Rap Battle, who would portray each character?
*The piano introduction begins as we see the opening to World of Light... but with a twist. The Smashers are swept away by the Light of Galeem... except for Mario, Fox, Link, Samus, DK, and Captain Falcon. Kirby sacrifices himself to save them, scattering them to the wind. They must unite... to save the multiverse and stop Galeem once and for all.*
Chorus:
And now it’s time, to make things right,
Amending our mistakes.
The Ashes fall, so we answer the call,
There’s one last stand to make...
Whatever it takes.
-
*Cut to Mario, pulling himself through Mushroom Castle, being hunted by Galeem’s monsters*
Mario:
We’re the first of our kind, but we sure ain’t the last.
Pushing forward but we don’t forget the past.
*Mario punches a monster to smithereens*
Our fight is far from over and we’re running low on options,
If I don’t return with my Cap I’ll be coming home upon it!
*Mario charges forward, blasting through a monster towards the door*
I’ve learned that history can’t be reversed,
Galeem was a judge for whom we could not rehearse.
I’ve got to assemble a team I can trust in again.
*Mario blasts through the last of Galeem’s monsters, busting out the main door of the castle*
Leavin’ a legacy behind that isn’t dust in the wind!
-
*Cut to Link standing alone in a forest clearing, Galeem’s monsters surrounding him. He is kneeling on the ground, Is head resting on the pommel of the Master Sword which is shoved tip first into the ground in front of him*
Link:
Set back, never felt we lost it. *He stands up, staring down at the Master Sword.
Break storms, not a game for profit.*He draws the Master Sword as the monsters begin to rush him.*
I, *flashback to the deaths of Mipha, Revali, Daruk, and Urbosa* Lost family to find the way.
Hold it down for my people, *slashes apart the first monster to reach him* I won’t die today.
Illegitimate, nothing to fiddle with, *slams his shield into another monster’s head and stabs it through the skull*
Just a little bit of faith and we’re out the predicament,
Stand behind me,
Give it your all, VOW! *stabs a monster*
We’re never gonna fall down. *decapitates another*
Still got one shot, Leaps high into the air, charging the Master Sword with lightning and bringing it down like a hammer*
Let the energy all out!
-
*Cut to Fox alone in an abandoned city as it rains. He walks down the street, consumed by his own failure to lead the Smashers.*
Fox:
Walking alone in the night!
There’s red in my eyes!
Can’t shake it outta my mind!
Lost everything I love, *stares down at his hands*
Is this what I’ve become!?
*his communicator starts ringing and he sees that Mario is trying to contact him. He stares at it forlornly, unsure of what to do.*
I know I don’t deserve a second chance.
*His hands tighten around the communicator*
But maybe there’s a shot that we could take it back.
For all they stole away... *he looks up to see a possessed Falco and Wolf coming at him*
I’ll do what ever it takes! *draws his blaster and fires*
-
Chorus:
And now it’s time, to make things right,
Amending our mistakes.
The Ashes fall, so we answer the call,
There’s one last stand to make...
Whatever it takes.
-
*cut to DK, alone in the jungle, sitting on top of a mighty ziggurat, his head in his hand*
DK:
When lives are on the line, man there is no try.
When it was time to fight, I was just wondering why.
Why the Beast inside chose to run and hide.
Went from wrecking ball to someone I don’t recognize.
*sees a flying Galeem monster heading towards him*
But if you bet on my demise, well surprise, surprise. *He stands*
I’m still here and still I rise. *he crouches to jump.*
No dry eyes, among my allies,
My drive’s revived. *he leaps at the flying creature with a massive jump, preparing to intercept it’s flight towards him*
Won’t stop till history’s revised.
-
*Cut to Samus desperately trying to fix her ship*
Samus:
We lost it all, now all that’s left, *Samus stands satisfied with her work.*
This job, this mission I can’t forget.
We can’t stop till we bring them home! *stares at a picture in her hand. A picture of the Smash Bros. The family that she chose.*
90% of all we know!
*she stashes the picture and turns to face an approaching monster*
Gotta get back to how it was!
Some move on, *summons her power armor* but not us.
Whatever it takes I’ll pay the price!
Take my soul *blasts the monster into oblivion* I’ll give my life!
-
*cut to Captain Falcon racing down the road in the Blue Falcon He's doing what he does best, hunting*
Falcon:
Listen,
I learned my lesson so it’s time to settle down! *rams the Blue Falcon into a Galeem Monster*
If there were a weapon I could contrive to turn this Hell around, *Boost Fire Spins cutting through several others*
I would have kept at it every single night to figure it out,
And said Sam Bros: Brawl, now!
But I’ve gotta think of how we’re gonna make the Angel bow! *leaps out of the Blue Falcon*
Remember Shulk said, 1 outta 14 Million, *flashback to Falcon talking with a worn out Shulk before the disastrous fight with Galeem*
I’m a Hunter who’s proud. But not that brilliant.
Let’s plan on living as we take back the hours that were stolen from our-
FALCON PAWNCH! *Falcon Punch’s a monster out of existence*
-
Chorus:
And now it’s time, to make things right,
Amending our mistakes.
The Ashes fall, so we answer the call,
There’s one last stand to make...
Whatever it takes.

It will without a doubt. And exactly how do thаt effect the product this is certainly stock-to-flow and possibly the forecast? We applied four ways of changing for forgotten cοins therefore I performed thе assessment. PlanB: the way are earliest to simply overlook the basic million сoinѕ, the very сalled Satоshi сoіns. We don’t discover needless to say if thoѕe had been Ѕatoshi coins, bυt that is the story, аnd better thosе coins have actuallyn’t relocated. So let’s perform just as if they're forgotten. To ensure’s one method. I then dіd really no adjustment method therefore allow those a million іn there. Α slow is carried out by myself reduction scenarіo. Very thеre’s about four milliοn destroyed coins аround today, 2019. In order that’s around, the facts, 30 anything %. Imagine if eνery you will find 30% of coins destroyed, and also make that steadily οvertіme season. And I also matched the 2 inside a example that will be 4th. РlanB: Ѕo first a million control, immediately after which a diminished portion control from year to year. After which appear whatever that performed utilizing the research that will be stock-to-flow.
Fundamentally, there seemed to be no effect. A bit, however the consequence had been the exact same, together with R-sqυared was the exact same all above 90 to 90-95 for the reason that place therefore it changеd the variables needless to say. Therefore I think shed cοins is certainly not much a irritating difficulty, bυt i actually do see the concern truly. I believe we could properly sleeping on that issue. Stephan Liνera: Yes. Lеt’ѕ carry on with the 2nd onе. PlanB: the next any had been gold that is actually ok gold figures include controversial. Wеll, that is correct. After all, my personal sterling silver figures had been incorrect. Therefore I аdjusted those. But let’s debate іt. These people were controversial or Τuur performedn’t show-me their figures sо he performedn’t truly point out precisely why. But I’d love to see. Therefore if thеre’s anybody available to choose from with which has much better figures, best options. I additionally expected that when you look at the tweets. Kindly express all of them with you making this better quality. But in contrast silver and gold means that We have from the short minute, and so the Incrementum document plus the gold Institute facts, and exact same with pallаdium and plаtinum.
РlanВ: those genuine figures commonly a whole lot discussed in product groups. Іt, bυt, yеah, We dоn’t understand therefore we could dοublе-check. I do believe thosе are very ok, but I’d choose hеar much more about exactly why Tuur believes they are often incorrect or if perhaps he's data being various. Let’s indeed argument thіs. Something to provide could be the silver and rates which happen to be gold maybe not thе unit alone. Therefore they’re generally in addition to the Bitcoin stock-tо-flow design. Thеy’rе simply an be sure is actually higher whether or not it’ѕ a spurioυs regression or otherwise not. Even though those figures had been completely wrong while the entire design this is certainly stοck-to-flow gold-and-silver just isn't truth be told there, and etc, that claims absolutely nothing in regards to the Bitcoin stock-to-flow design. It really appears indeed there as it's. It is created from facts. Therefore, yeah, i believe we're able to place that to fall asleep also. Steрhan Livеrа: Certain. Fine. In my opinion, there’s absolutely nothing I am able to consider that.

Cuppa Joe for Sun., 7 Jan 2019
I was sitting in my living room with my best mate watching “Parts Unknown” with the late Anthony Bourdain and the episode we were watching was in Welch, West Virginia. Watch it. Seriously, watch it. Listen carefully. You may just get more woke. I know I did. You see, people from regions like this are typified as hicks, hillbillies and rednecks. Well, to be fair, they are. Good ol’ coal country folk bent on guns and Jesus with a deep love of football. It’s never been my cuppa tea, honestly, but having been through places like this, I’ve experienced a couple of things. If I shut up and just listen, these folks, for the most part, are just like anyone anywhere else. They have pride in their homes, their families, their traditions, and they certainly don’t love, more or less, as frequently, or deeply as we do. Their pleasures are simple. Their tastes plain and direct. Their pains every bit as real as yours or mine.
Looking at them strictly through a political scope of late, especially since 2016 where my vision narrowed a bit, I’ve come to remember something; something that’s a bit embarrassing and certainly bears the burden of a dose of shame, now that I’ve watched this episode of “Parts Unknown”. Bourdain visited a coal mine and fired machine guns and ate the local delicacies of the area and talked to the folk, even being so brave as to broach the topic of politics in this once deeply blue, now deeply red and pro-trump part of our nation. “I’d lost my way,” I realized as I did something I haven’t done in a long time. I listened.
Now don’t get me wrong here; I’m not about to defend these poor bastards for voting for trump. Not in a million years. They didn’t do their research or homework and they’re guilty for putting that fuckwit in the White House. However, taking the time to listen to the “why” made me look a little deeper. It made me realize something. These simple folk, not overly educated but hard working, kind-hearted people, despite not being on the short path for a Pulitzer Prize for anything intelligent… might just be the geniuses we need. Sounds crazy? I’ll explain.
One of the big reasons they went trump is because HRC gave them all the impression that she was going to kill the coal industry but didn’t make the case well enough about retraining and repurposing their workforce. She ran a campaign against an industry steeped in their traditions now, generations having worked in the mines. Simply, she was an uppity city gal without a clue and she lost them. The problem here, for those unfamiliar with places like this, is that uppity city folk have ALWAYS found some way to come into their small, quiet towns, fool them into buying or investing in shit they don’t need nor want (which goes all the way back to the Carpetbaggers. Look that up if you don’t know what that is). While it brought them good paying jobs sometimes, like Big Coal did, they’re all too aware that their crops, resources and so forth are bought on the cheap there and sold by middle men for small fortunes in the big cities. They know full well they’re getting screwed, but they also don’t really have the means to exploit the market directly, eliminate the middlemen, and see that small fortune themselves. Generations have experienced making a little money while their efforts went on to make city folk pretty rich.
So why trump? In short, many feel he’s going to bring change and they like him because he “talks like they talk” and says how he feels and what he means. By now I do hope that’s changed a bit. Still, the orange fuckwit did ring a chord with these people, even though he’s a rich twat from NY. They’re confident that trump will bring change, and you know what? I just caught on that they’re right, just not in the way they’re thinking.
We’re at a strange stage of existence where the well educated are flustered at having to deal with the less educated, including that gap in religious beliefs or lack thereof. Both sides now look down their noses at one another and the chasm of contempt is obviously growing bigger and bigger. It’s no secret that we’re all getting more and more poor regardless of our level of education or faith, and because of that, the rich fuckers at the top utilize that ongoing divide to keep us from actually remembering what makes us all alike for fear we, the actual people, may rise up and literally get rid of them one way or another.
I used to think that the GOP only had eyes for corporations and their cash. It’s why I dropped my GOP leanings years and years ago. It’s one thing to want smaller federal government and fiscal responsibility, but when they’re always doing the opposite and the Democrats actually DID what the GOP’s platform was saying it was for, well, actions speak louder than words. However, I think we can all agree to some measure of other, that today’s Dems are acting like moderate GOPers of the 80’s to 90’s. As the Democrats have demonstrated in this new House, diversity is clearly something that keeps them at a respectable level on the Left, but wait… Watch this episode of “Parts Unknown”. It’s on NetFlix. Watch it and then read the rest of this. I’ll wait.
No I won’t. You know it. Still, watch it. It gave me the following epiphany here, and I’d like you to consider it. The people Bourdain talked to about trump, and we’ve heard it before too, and we mostly gaffed it off, but here’s the genius of it all- They’re right in that trump will bring change. He’s so terrible, so fucking stupid, so damaging to the country, that our only hope as a nation is to REMEMBER what makes us all Americans, not bitch about too many of the things that really don’t matter (yeah, I’ll lighten up on the religious folks, even if I think it’s all a load of bollocks) and look at things from a different angle. Here it is. This change NEEDS to happen, but not in the GOP; they’ll never change. No, seriously, they won’t. They’re loving the cash more than country. No, I mean CHANGE needs to come from the Democrats! For too long they've made dumb choices, their politicians are spineless, and their policies framed in ways that seem to look down at most of rural America (what I call #Murica). Democrats need to shut up and listen. They need to HEAR what troubles there are out there and not just wink and nod and say they’ll try to handle it, but to bloody well DO it. They need to be CLEAR what their message is.
Sanders lost a lot of support because he and his staff never actually spent the time to school the people out here on what DEMOCRATIC socialism (actually this term is incorrect if you want to split hairs- what Sanders is shooting for is Social Democracy; something we already have to a degree and it’s being stripped away and replaced with an oligarchy more and more. Also see Plutocracy) is, and the McCarthy-flashbacks kept people hearing “socialist” only and the association we were taught in school to that word relating to tyrannical countries like the USSR, China and so on and it put too many voters off. Still, Sanders creamed trump in loads of polls while HRC was sketchy; a gamble at best. She didn’t connect with the ‘simple folk’ out in the sticks and in blue territory while Sanders did. The Dems need to own their defeat, admit their part in helping trump get elected, and then move on from there. Americans are all for Progressive ideas; they just don’t trust the Dems to either have the spine to try, the balls to fight, or the strength to carry it through. Again, those people in Welch WV are right- trump will bring change, one way or another. Either we’re going to get rid of Corporate Democrats who ignore their constituents and suck corporate dicks for cash (as the GOP is famed for) and actually CHANGE by getting money out of politics and start working for “We the People”, OR they won’t, and change will still happen, only not in the way these rural folk think. It’ll be the collapse and end of the US as we know it, a division so bad that nobody will come and help because we’ve pissed off and alienated out allies and bowed down, on a global scope, to our former enemies like Russia and China and N. Korea.
So, while city mouse and country mouse may both enjoy time with their families, decent wages, decent jobs, good food, clean air and water, good education, healthcare, and the pride of being an American citizen, we need to remember that these are the important things that bind us together, not only with our fellow Americans, but our fellow human beings all across the planet. There are some things that just WON’T go away, and somewhere in here we need to agree to disagree. Abortion. Guns. It’s too late on these issues. We either respect the separation of church and state and keep abortion legal for the safety and lives of women or we don’t and admit that we’re all up for Sharia Law, #Murican style. As for guns? We’ll never fix this one EVER. Again, watch the show I mentioned earlier. The problem is that we’re so saturated with guns that it won’t matter if there are any gun laws or not. They won’t do a damned thing no matter how much I wish they would. Still, trump will bring change, like they said. The question is, will Democrats make the changes in their party that are needed to literally save the United States and possibly the world, or not change and cement in our history that they ARE the scourge that those on the right think they are?
