Hi! I recently found your blog and I love it a lot, and I was wondering if you'd be able to help ID this bird that's been perplexing me for weeks. Sorry, the photo quality is very very bad, but it was white with grey wings (as far as I could see) and a pink/orange bill. Definitely goose-shaped, but it doesn't match the description of any geese that are usually found in the area (the area being a park in Melbourne, Australia).
(I also have some videos of it if that would help, but Tumblr wouldn't let me attach them to an ask)
No need to apologize for the quality; I know birds can be pretty difficult to photograph!
At first glance, this looks like it may be a white morph of a Ross's goose or snow goose, but neither are endemic to the area you stated, nor have they been introduced (to my knowledge). Given the location, it's most likely some variety of greylag-derived domestic goose (Anser anser domesticus), but without further information it's extremely difficult to tell.
Having said that, I am not Australian. However, if I have any followers in Australia, please feel free to chime in with your two-cents as to what this handsome fella may be!

https://www.tumblr.com/kiskivmiske/770496642801696768/huh-is-that-a-bird-sounded-mechanical?source=share
Western Siberia, around 62°
I keep hearing this sound in the woods randomly during the day and at dusk around 5 pm. IRL it sounds almost like an electronic signal, but it moves, and I hear it at different locations without hearing an engine and often without seeing tracks. There's a junkyard juuuuust behind this area of the forest, but I also heard it near railway 3+km away. This isn't how our trains honk. When it echoes it does sound more like an animal, the tone differs a bit.
I know many birds that live in our woods: great gray owl, Ural owl, corvids, nutcrackers, jays, great tits, sparrows, nuthatches, grouses, thrushes, waxwings, etc. Or it's a very uncommon sound for any of them. Or it's a raven imitating a car going backwards. Or a bird that isn't common for this place. I've seen a barn owl and a flamingo going as far as near Ekaterinburg. Or just aliens.
I'm sadly not EXTREMELY familiar with Eurasian birds, but upon hearing it my immediate thought was a jay, or at least a corvid. It's hard to find examples but I can tell you blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) of N America make "pinging" or "plonking" sounds like that on occasion. So with that informing my research, I looked at corvids.
It's not identical but I found this clip of common ravens (Corvus corax) making a very similar sound. Considering animals can have "accents" and individual variation, especially with birds, that's my best guess. Even in this video, the final raven makes the sound three times while the other two only do it twice. I wouldn't be surprised if some populations have a longer gap between the "klonks". Distance and echoes can change the sound too, of course.
(original video)
(sorry for the horrid cropping lol I only have very basic video editing software on my laptop)
So I'm fairly confident that's what your animal is. At the very least it's almost certainly a corvid, maybe even one mimicking another. It's a really cool sound either way! Thank you for the ask ^ ^

I went to an art exhibition curated by someone I know and love, and it was really incredible. She works as the Collections Manager at a local, highly respected museum -- it's small, but it actually has some serious pull, since a lot of artists vacation around here and they'll donate their paintings, and some famous people are museum members and everything. But I really did enjoy it -- there were some incredible pieces, not just from her curation, but all throughout the museum. I really lagged behind my group because I would spend so long just looking at one piece of art -- there was a really beautiful seven minute video piece called UN/SAFE that I was transfixed by, and a tiny little house decorated with shells. I didn't get photos of everything, but I just...fucking loved it. We've both always loved art and art museums, so seeing her absolutely thrive as the curator is just incredible.
Tumblr media
The handwriting on this one kind of hard to read. If someone can accurately identify what was written where I had trouble, please tell me so I can update the ID, but this one was my favourite. The artist was in Antarctica, so these were drawn from life. I can appreciate the watercolour smudge next to one of the penguins, since I've done that so often.
Tumblr media
I really like this one because I myself often paste things on top of my art when I fuck up. I see it as unprofessional, but this was in a museum proper! I wish I'd gotten a picture of the piece next to it, which was very clearly never meant to see the light of day and where the legs had been incompletely erased and drawn over to be longer.
The theme of this specific exhibition was 'inscriptions from the permanent collection,' so everything curated for it was dedicated to someone specifically, but a lot of them as well did have these personal touches and imperfections -- they weren't intended to be seen by the general public, but now that they are, we can see them and their beauty. I really loved her exhibition, because of how real it felt to me as an amateur artist, and how alive it felt.
Her showing was only one room, though, and there were so many other pieces, including aforementioned UN/SAFE. I again didn't get a lot of pictures, but some of them were for sale, for perfectly reasonable prices that nonetheless boggled the mind. I think the highest piece was a multimedia installation for 37,000$.
Tumblr media
This one just reminded me of my own life -- you know, the experience of tangled cables all stuck together? I really loved it, even if there's no room for more art in my home and I would not personally pay sixteen hundred dollars for it.
Tumblr media
I'll admit this one is a lot simpler -- I saw this painting and immediately thought of the lesbian flag, but I think this painting predates the creation of the flag I was thinking of. The egg, as well, predates the use of 'egg' as a widespread transgender term, but it still made me think about it. I like it a lot.
Anyway. I love art, I love art galleries, I love art museums. I'd go back there every day if it wasn't so prohibitively annoying to get there, but for now, sharing it with everyone here will have to do.

Peruvian thick-knee (Hesperoburhinus superciliaris)
Actually I will retract that ID: The plumage is consistent with immature Peruvian thick-knees but the bill and leg coloration are not. This is a thick-knee, but I can't say what species.

I've started playing Potion Permit, and so far it's one of my favorite games I've messed around with, but the most big brained move the devs made was giving you a dog on day 1, and then making that dog able to track NPCs and lead you directly to them no matter where they are in the town.
#im still early game but i like the play and the writing is passable#like#Theres a flatness#the characters Are distinct but theyre mostly just their jobs#with only a few who stand out and have like. something to really grab onto#Like rue? rues entire deal is little girl you can date. Nothing else behind those eyes. She has nothing better to talk to you about#than the fact her favorite color is red#Sorcelia? Sorcelia is a goth nun who loves singing and teaches one of the village children#Reynerd? sure is a guy#got nothing else to say about him. hes just a Guy™. Victor? Has ghost friends and loves bugs and cares deeply about the cemetery#he tends to. At the moment it feels like they're trying to imply there aren't actually ghosts. and hes just talking to himself/#insisting his imaginary friends are real people#and so far? The games been cool about it. Victor's a member of his community and his eccentricities are accepted and not ridiculed#all four characters ive mentioned are romance candidates. but its just as hit or miss with the regular towns folk#Opalheart is an older woman and a world renowned blacksmith who only takes jobs if they will do Good. regardless of whether or not they#pay well. She declines to make a dagger for a rich man but makes a helmet for a childs father bc the girl asked#and olive is here#anyways you can be best friends with a cat (shes just a regular cat) and i appreciate that#idk im putting it above sun haven in my ranking of life sim games#purely because there are older romance candidates.#no fat romance candidates. but sun haven doesn't have thise either.#and sdv has neither fat or old candidates Nor can you fuck a cat boy. it goes at the bottom.#gameplay wise sunhaven is at the bottom then sdv then potion permit at the top. sunhaven has the Most™ but having#a lot of crap doesn't mean its fun and it ends up making half the game feel really incomplete#idk. Sdv is a game you should've started playing a year ago. sun haven is a game that perpetually needs another year worth of updates#before id say its worth it bc the devs keep pushing content ™ updates instead of quality of life or polish so what is there is uh#Bad. plentiful. and a large portion is good#but a Lot is just bad.#its insincere and cant take itself seriously it gives you (the right dialogue option) an (the shit joke option) which is worse than just#i ram out of space. tldr. potion permit is good Now. sdv Was good. sun haven Might be great Eventually

I chose a game that not so many people know but still is my favorite game so far(I mean sure I haven't played so many but whatever) so yea, I'm gonna chose it as an AU. the dialogue is pretty weird cause I'm trying to cram exposition in there lol, but whatever, hope the art's fine atleast.

folks, dont do this. like, one, my a/n on coping skills thru the last like five updates make it abundantly clear that i am going to Major Medical Bullshit and if there is ever a good reason to put a creative project on hold, its to recover from almost dying several times in a short span
but also, there is never any reason ever at all full stop, to include a line in ur fic comment to this effect. if you assume something isnt going to be updated ever again, you keep that to urself before slapping it at the author is a damned good way to ensure it doesn't get touched again. its passive aggressive and shamey, and while i dont think it was the intent of the commenter to read that way, it still fuckin sucks. the rest of the comment was lovely appreciation for my smut and characterization. it could have easily started with "i gotta say" as the lead in instead of the above and it would have made me excited and joyous to touch this project again now that im starting to feel like a whole human again, after, you know, almost dying a lot
and instead im just frustrated and mad
so dont do this

on your phases: how are they determined? has there any instances you know of where a collector has two phases at the same time? (i.e waxing and gibbous, quarter and gibbous, etc.)
Tumblr media
The Coordinator: No, that is not how phases work. There are two "complete" states, the new moon and the full moon. Any phase before the full moon is waxing, and any phase after is waning, with quarter, crescent, and gibbous signifying how much light there is on the moon. Despite being called a quarter, the first and final quarter moons are when the moon is half covered in light, much like how my face appears. A crescent is between the quarter and new moon, and the gibbous is between the quarter and full moon. So yes, someone could be a waxing gibbous but no one could be a quarter and gibbous because those are two contradicting, different things.
