if you’ve ever made a post saying ‘Go read In Another Life by LittleLuxray’ there’s a circle of hell reserved for you. The tear stain on my pillow is nearly as unhappy about this as i am.

I’m just going to embrace the angst, like I embraced writing OCs. I’m not fighting it anymore.
It will all end well, but there is tragic backstory that must be told first. I don’t make the rules.

Just thinking about InAnotherLife!Gyomei who must leave Sayo in your care.
Just thinking about InAnotherLife!Shinobu who dies at peace with her soul for only knowing you are well
Just thinking about InAnotherLife!Obanai who must watch the first person he has ever loved, love another
Just thinking about InAnotherLife!Muichiro who must abandon adolescence for duties.
Angst inspiration is hitting hard, cannot wait to revisit this series in two months! Sanemi and Rengoku's pieces are honestly my pride and joy as a writer.

In Another Life | Previous |
Summary: Juggling both college and superhero antics gets to be a handful, but at least the Golden Coast Guardians are always there for her.
                                                                   ~
The day passed and her nightly endeavors led to creeping out of the sorority house through her bedroom window. Assured that all lights in the nearby vicinity were off, she pressed a black domino mask to her face, smoothing it out over her cheeks and eyebrows. Holding onto the window by its sill, Arden pushed off from the house and took flight, quietly joining the clouds at mach speed.      Skirt fluttering in the wind, her outfit was almost a perfect copy of her cheering uniform with long sleeves and different colors. Muted blues and greys colored her apart from the sky. Fortunately, covering twenty-five miles by flight would only take about ten minutes.
The Golden Coast Guardians set their headquarters practically in view for anyone to see in San Pablo Bay, just a few miles off coast. Fortunately, most of the Guardians either had the ability to walk on water, fly, or know the underground entrance. A modest grey building, stone and windows glowed in the evening sunset. Small LED lights dotted important areas of the building, including floor levels and the roof for the helipad.     Touching down to the giant ‘H’, Arden rushed to the roof access door, zipping down the stairs. Granted, the hero arrived perfectly on time, but it didn’t keep her internal clock from ringing about her self-imposed tardiness.      Flying and stumbling down to her feet with a few missteps, “I’m here!” she yelled, into the bright, marbled room.      “Babe, chill,” Magnitude smirked, sitting on the crescent shaped couch in the conversation pit. Her green eyes hadn’t left the large monitor screen, more than a hundred feet by a hundred feet. With a heart-shaped face and muscular build, power radiated from her in a way that Arden could only describe as, ‘fuck around and find out’. Shoulder length sandy blonde hair kept back by a tan sweatband, it matched her Super Suit, looking like every form of padding from football and hockey combined onto spandex.      Every cubed section of the monitor had a different reading or system up for it, Data Mine hooked in. His silver suit had lines running down the seams of it that glowed when he used his powers, along with his eyes, hidden behind an infinity visor.     While his body sat being a perfect mannequin, his digital persona appeared in the bottom corner, a pair of over expressive eyes. “Seriously, you’re five seconds early, that’s practically forever,” the eyes rolled.      “Maybe in like, the digital world Data, but some of us are actually from reality.”     “Maggie, virtual reality still counts as reality you realize. Should I read your browsing history to the rest of them?”     “As if I of all people have anything to lose.”     Shoulders dropping, Arden sighed. Floating to join her friend on the couch, she tucked a lock of ivory hair behind her ear. “Ugh.”     “Poor Clementine, what’s the matter this time? Failing a class?”     “Data, I swear to Christ if you pull up my grades I’m going to kick you in the real-world nuts.”      Eyes doubled in size, brows raising. “Good God. The two of you have been spending way too much time together.”      Arms crossed with satisfaction, Magnitude rolled her head onto her shoulder to grin at Arden. “I’ve only taught her the best.”     Mimicking, Arden crossed her arms and grinned back.      Eyes rolling, Data continued scanning. “I remember when Clement was a pleasant person.”     “I am!” she huffed.      “Oh my God Data, fucking lay off. It’s hard to still be the youngest and in college.” With her nails, Magnitude scraped dirt out from between bits of her costume.      “Oh trust me. I remember.”     “Is this before or after you got caught hacking everything to only have girls in your classes with you?”     “Hey, if Bill Gates can do it, why can’t I?”     “Where’s Artie?” Arden asked, piping up.      Magnitude looked around, producing a pop of her brow. “Good question. Last time I saw him, him and Bear were going to the sparring room, but that was hours ago.”     “It’s everybody today, right?”     “Uhh,” Data started, pulling up a list of the Guardians center screen. “Let’s see, you two, me, Ursa, R.T., Surge, Arc, Oscillis- he’s out, got a wedding or some shit, and- I think that’s everybody, honestly. I don’t think I’m missing anyone.”      “It was supposed to be everybody today,” Maggie groaned. “At least with this whole Xerek bullshit.”      Arden frowned.       “Nothing we haven’t faced before, and nothing we can’t handle now,” Riptide hummed, wet steps sloshing towards Data.      “Speak for self. I, am not too sure,” Ursa huffed plopping down next to Arden, making the seat cushions pop her and Maggie into the air a bit.       "Privyet!" Arden grinned, gently floating herself down to the cushion.       "Ahh, privyet," Ursa Major hummed, a smile pulling his dense beard up. Crossing his thick, muscular arms, Arden was sure that it would take two of her heads combined to even equate to any circumference for his biceps. From the deep countryside of Russia, the seven-and-a-half-foot tall man escaped during the Cold War, after being tested on. Survivalist and super soldier, the drugs gave him his hulking form and his otherworldly abilities. He found peace deep in Washington’s forests as a ranger, protecting the pines before Riptide and Surge offered him a place among the Guardians.       Adjusting his bear skins, a brown eye traced over to Arden. “Are you studying my mother tongue?”      “Just this semester, but I might keep on with it next semester as well. I needed a language and figured it might be a good idea to learn something that I’d use a lot.”       Smiling further, the scars above his right eye wrinkled. “Ya blagodaryu tebya, I thank you.”      “I can like, understand it a bit better than writing it.”      “Cyrillic is, a bit tricky at first. I will help.”      “Spasiba. I’ll need all the help I can get.”      Why did it always feel like every time she showed up for meetings, their conversations turned towards her schooling? The running theory Arden had at the moment was that it was a singular thread they all had in common: everyone had been to school at some point, even Bear before his time with the Soviet Union.       Riptide pulled the deep blue hood of his wetsuit down off of his head, brown hair dripping into short spikes. Pulling his goggles down around his neck, his attention turned toward the monitor as well. Bigger brother to Surge, they pushed and pulled at each other like the moon and the ocean, nipping at each other as brothers do, but loathed being apart. Supposedly it was a twin thing, but considering they were fraternal, it’d be hard to tell at first glance. Two for the price of one, they both had water-related powers.      “Who we missing?” Artie started, a hand running up and back to try to keep the dripping hair out of his eyes.      “Uhh,” Data started pulling up the previous list. “Let’s see, so far just Arc, Surge, and Oscillis-”     “Is at a wedding,” Maggie, Artie, and Arden finished.      “So that leaves my brother and Arc.”     “Fashionably late as always,” Data chuckled, pulling up internal security cameras. They were standing in the breakroom, pouring a fresh pot of coffee.      “At least they’re in the building this time,” Riptide grumbled rubbing at his temples. “Call ‘em in and let’s get started, shall we? Data, you wanna join us in the real world?”     “Do I want to? No. Will I? Just for you Artie, he cooed. In a flash, his body moved again, hand lifting his visor up and standing next to their leader. Thin, Data looked like a beanpole next to Riptide, even if he was a few inches taller. The running joke was that Data and Arden could swap uniforms and they’d fit perfectly.       Leaning his hand onto the control panel, blue eyes glowed silver as he spoke, voice carrying over the loudspeaker. “If Arc and Surge could make their way to the conversation pit that would be great. Thank you-”      Maggie scoffed, leaning in to whisper to Arden. “Could he be any more dramatic?”      “I mean, wouldn’t you?”      Sitting back, she nodded a grin. “Yeah probably.”      “You’re so bad today.”      Maggie shrugged. “I’m bored. Things have been so boring as of late.”      “Well if you have such a free schedule, then maybe you’d like to patrol the southeast quarter tonight, hm?” Artie interjected, crossing his arms and popping a brow.      “Suddenly, I’m needed elsewhere.”      “Yeah okay. Anyway.”      Walking in from the left corridor, Arc and Surge were laughing, holding steaming cups of coffee. In the real world, they worked together often, as a plumber and an electrician respectively. Arc Wave often joked that he never left work when he would go on patrol. His Super Suit consisted of his work clothes that were free of any of business logos and a mask slapped on.       Crossing his arms, “Let’s get coffee after the briefing next time, okay?” Artie hummed.      “Oh, relax.” Reaching a hand out, Surge’s fingers flicked a few beads of water from his brother’s chest into said leader’s face. “We’re here, aren’t we? Doesn’t even look like we’re really all that late, honestly.” Pointing at Arden, “Clementine is even on time, so are we even really late?”      “Oh my God,” she groaned, eyes rolling. As the brothers bickered back and forth, her mind drifted to bright red hair. And how he made her feel. Hands rubbed at the back of her arms, thinking of their kiss. Without realizing, white locks had lifted off her shoulders.       “Earth to Clement,” Maggie groaned, running her hands down her scalp, trying to get her own hair to behave.       “Oh! Sorry. I’m just like, a bit distracted,” she hushed, their collective manes dropping.       “More than usual. What, is it a boy?”      Rolling her lips inward, she really sucked at keeping secrets.       “Oh now you’ve got to tell me,” Maggie ribbed, flopping a hand over.       “What do you want me to tell you? We made out, he asked me out, and we’re going on a date Thursday night.”      Taking Arden’s wrist, she lifted her arm into the air. “Artie, Artie! Clementine can’t go on patrol on Thursday because she has a date!”      “Oh Jesus Christ.” Hand to her face, it was a feeble attempt to hide the red growing.       Flabbergasted, Riptide looked at the girls, mouth opening and shutting several times as he tried to think of anything to say. While the most put-together person of the team, his collected façade cracked slightly. With a small, amused smile, it broke into a chuckle. “Well, alright. We’ll meet in the middle after the briefing.”      Squealing, Magnitude pulled Arden against her in a tight hug. “You’re finally not going to die alone!”      “I mean like, I didn’t plan on it?” Pushing back, she had to giggle as well.       “Do you know what you’re wearing?”      The ever-famed question of asking her what she was wearing. It was enough to get Data to lift his brow at her. Considering the man lived chronically online, his analysis of microtrends were invaluable to the budding seamstress.       “I thought of doing something classy, think like,” rolling her palm over, aqua glow condensed into a sapphire form, “little black dress, but Princess Diana.” Off the shoulder form-fitting gown, it resembled a Barbie doll, but with Arden’s proportions and her Farrah Fawcett hair.       Jumping in, “The revenge dress? Didn’t you just meet this guy?” Data asked, a little too invested.       “It’s like you don’t even pay attention,” Maggie groaned. “She’s a man-eater, didn’t you know?”      “God in like, what world? I’m so bad at recognizing when someone likes me so-” Hell, her face felt warm. “I don’t know! I just want to make a good impression.”      “Don’t hold back when striking the heart for the kill.”       All eyes turned to Bear, who had been sitting in silence, arms crossed. Considering it was standard operating procedure for him to be in his own world during the pre-meeting of the meeting, rarely did he have an opinion on anything. Especially romantic affairs.      Pushing Artie to the side slightly, Data’s long strides put him at the ledge of the conversation pit, sitting down. “Okay now this I need to hear.”     “Do it.” Both bouldered shoulders shrugged. “Last time man entered Clementine’s life, he bored her. No chase. No life. Borscht had more personality.” A thick digit pointed at Data. “Man of perfect mind, am I wrong?”     Arden could never tell if Data’s powers ended at his picture-perfect memory, or started at the billions of hard drives he kept on him, woven into the fibers of his Suit.     Mouth ajar, it shut as he caught a puff of air in his mouth. “He’s right.”    Grinning from ear to ear, Maggie started shaking Arden. “I. Need. To. Meet. Him.”    Defeated, letting her head rock back and forth while being shook, “Can I just text you a picture or like, something-”    “We could just hack his webcam-”    “Data,” the blondes groaned.     Hands up, “Look, there’s no need to be farting around like this when we could easily be-”    Reaching a hand out, “No, Data,” Maggie hummed. “We’ll do this the right way. Who knows. Maybe she’ll bring him around here or something.”    “Yeah okay,” Arden hummed, hair off of her shoulders. “Literally no one at school knows I’m a superhero, I don’t think I want to just like, start announcing it. I mean, what if I tell him, and then he starts telling his frat brothers-”     “Frat boy, got it,” Data nodded. "So our standards are nonexistent?"     Ignoring him, “What’s he like?” Maggie’s fingers started digging in a bit, foaming at the mouth.      “So bad.” Biting her lip, toes curled in her boots.      “Holy. Shit.”     Clapping his hands, Riptide tried to pull attention back to him. “Alright folks, let’s get to it before the next century, shall we?”     Groans happened all over, slowly settling into familiar seats and spots. Not that any of the spots were assigned, but if the girls didn’t sit next to each other, they would text the whole time. Ursa needed to be on the end because if he sat in the middle, no one could see over him. Arc and Surge would cause more ruckus than normal because they, like the girls, would be not only texting each other from across the crescent couch, but video-calling. Oscillis, when present, sat between the girls and aforementioned blue-collar boys. Riptide and Data typically stood, having some sort of presentation while herding all the cats.       “Data?”      “Yup.” Hand to the control panel, eyes glowed. Room lights dimmed and the screen became the focal point.       “Okay folks,” Riptide clapped, rubbing hands over each other, “here’s what we know. Local banks and finer establishments have been noticing an upsurge in small robots being discovered in odd locales.” Pictures of banks, jewelry, and pawn shops flashed by, similar rectangular robots being in each photo. About the size of a television remote, four legs split out from the center with a sizable camera lens on the front. “The odd thing being that this isn’t your typical, ‘go for gold’ situation. Second hand stores, thrift stores, and pawn shops have all had these little critters pop up. Next.” The next set of slides showed closer scans of the robots either as one complete brick or in pieces, depending on how the owner found them.       “Data here was able to get into their rudimentary coding and,” he turned to Data.      “Basically, there’s a source. These little bastards all had to come from somewhere and considering no one was caught on camera anywhere suggests they were remotely operated. Best we got is a warehouse about three miles due south from here, but who knows what’s left.” Pulling his hand off the panel, his mouth shifted to the side. “Strangely, I haven’t been able to get into their systems yet. Either they knew that I could, or they’re all offline and dead now.” Throwing fingers up into the air, he tepidly hummed, “Not that an offline piece of machinery is really going to stop me but-”      “But it means we have our next stepping stone to try to catch up to him, and stop him. We have the name Xerek, but it’s anyone’s guess if that’s his alias, his boss’s alias or, whatever.”      “How do you know it’s a guy?” Maggie interrupted, cavalier grin on her face.      “Okay, her alias. Does it matter?”      “No.”      Arden snorted a chuckle, earning a glare-down from Riptide.       “Anyway. Saturday night, don’t have plans. We’re all going to check it out in person. Theoretically Oscillis should be here as well, so.” He spun a finger around in a small circle, both as a visual pun of the last Super’s powers, and his enthusiasm to adding the last Stooge to the squad.       “Do you think he caught the garter?” Arc asked behind a sip of his coffee.       “If he did he wouldn’t tell us. He’d still be smelling it,” Surge whispered back.      Barking a laugh, another glare from their leader was sent to Arc Wave. The electrician pointed at Surge. “Hey I didn’t say shit this time.”      Drinking his coffee, a weak hand raised for Surge’s defense. “Guilty.”      “You two are going to have the graveyard shift if you keep it up.”      “I’m at the plant in the mornings, don’t do that Artie,” Arc whined.      “Look, I don’t want to, but this is important. We’ve got some lunatic on the run sizing up all of these places for Lord knows what. This is a threat of national security.”       Often when Artie brought up the importance of ‘national security’ and the ‘citizens of a free democratic republic’ Arden imagined an American flag flapping behind him. Call Artie whatever you wanted, he had a rock solid foundation of protecting the people of their great nation. Though, there had been brief mentions of connecting with other Supers from around the globe and creating an underground link between all of them. Considering there were people who could cross all the oceans in the blink of an eye, it would only improve the fight towards world peace. The opposition offered thoughts of power scaling, that should the heroes put up larger walls, bigger weapons would break them down until the world and its people suffered as the entry fee in their moral game of chess.       Azure eyes glanced Bear out of the corner of their corners. Quiet and reserved, he rarely had anything to say. Instead, he observed; taking note and inventory of how they bickered and if it was as siblings or as opponents. Riptide was their unmistakable leader, but Ursa dealt in peace. Strangely, he reminded her of her father and on several occasions she spoke the notion aloud. Michael Harris had only stern, earthen words against one Janet Harris’ insistence of the age of Aquarius and the importance of keeping her aura clean. Instead of creating an awkward tension, a hum from his chest emanated. In his choice-pick English, Ursa Major took the complemented honor in full-stride, offering his wisdom from the many years he stalked the earth in the lands of man and animal alike, but only should she seek his counsel.       Floating up out of her seat ever so slightly, Arden got at eye level with him. “You’ve got something on your mind.”      “Da. Something, off.”      “Any ideas?”      He shook his head. “I need to consult my books.”      “Hm.” Plopping back down into her seat, brows ticked down in thought. Thankful for not being the ‘idea guy’, it gave her room to run the information around in her own brain.       “And that’s about it. Any questions?” Artie asked, surveying the room. “I’ll even take comments and concerns.”      Surge raised his hand.      Begrudgingly, “Yes?”      “Break room’s outta coffee.”

Soo... The next chapter of Another Life is now pretty much sketched out.
At last I’m writing something entirely new, rather than building on what had already been drafted long ago. I am relief.
Maybe it’s because I’m rusty, but its coming out in a much less coherent state than I’m used to - ideas tumbling all over each other, no clear cut order to it, and still my OCs are being pushy - but the gods know I’ll take it, however it comes.
Fingers crossed that I can stay with it this time.
