A bad day on the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72)

This Grumman A-6 Intruder BuNo 151575 of VA-176 was preparing to launch on a tanker mission. On the catapult the "buddy store" refueling system on the centerline began leaking. Spilled fuel ignited, the crew jettisoned the canopy (rocket motor on the canopy frame threw it clear of the aircraft) and the crew unstrapped, climbed out and jumped off the wingtip uninjured. A deck crewman was injured when the flying canopy landed on the deck.

The fire was extinguished and the aircraft returned to Grumman, but it was deemed too badly damaged for economical repair and was written off.
