nuts reading trigun in japanese 6 - kaite's foreshadowing. plant synchronization's downside

remember in my part 3 and 5 i was talking about hierarchy? surprisingly, it continues past chapter 8 with kaite. and wolfwood. triangulating nyoom

(to be honest... ive been doing these read and analysis completely blind in a 1st JP read through. so its possible ill find new nuances, get things wrong as the context shifts and changes, so my stuff looks like its scattered all over the place. sorry about that.)

i think ill start explaining names and meanings. kaite's name in japanese is kaito. カイト. this can be a homonym with i think 怪盗 (kaitou) in this case, which means phantom thief. for trying to help Neon with stealing loot from the Sand Steamer.

^the headaches with manga translations has always been to keep texts short and reasonable for flow and readability, so these simplifications can and sometimes must happen.

but, add dakutens, the " on 2 of those カイト katakanas and suddenly, kaito turns into. ガイド gaido. Guide.

so Kaite has been playing as a guide to lead vash to his death at the hands of Neon. this page is such a fucking whammy with the wordplay going on. if you just read this in japanese theres a moment of "oh shit, no way, Kaite, vash just told you to stop betraying people! what the hell!"

yet theres a level of trust going on already, so its not as bad as it seems

nightow really likes his worldplay. i really like this page.

kaite redeems himself by later charging into the boiler room and helps turn the valve to stop the sand steamer from running off cliff and killing everyone on board....

hm. a guide. and those sequences

we sure have a lot of guides here. one who appears in the manga later with a kansai dialect. and another in TriStamp, where he is younger than he appears.

when i spoke about hierarchy and the fact that vash is over 150, i was also kind of hinting that all of current humanity are akin to children in the system of JP hierarchy. that takes on extra meaning with a little change of context and language

wolfwood is filling in the shoes of kaito here in tristamp. and within trimax, kaito foreshadows him. incredible.

theres actually more going on with wolfwood and certain design/changes choices i wanna talk about with tristamp but ill save it for another day. maybe when i run into him in this read later

Plant Synchronization downside.

....so theres a bad downside to vash synchronizing with the plant that i didn't catch. which also answers what the fuck was going on in tristamp when that version of him hits the ground

nightow mentions this in an interview, link here posted and transcribed by xoxo-otome (thank you!) that he likes action flicks and has incorporated a lot of action into his work. and its true. there is so much action in the form of sound effects.

reading through the entire manga and paying attention to the sfx peppered around offers a lot more context to whats happening in half of the panels that seemingly doesnt make sense

like this one where the top panel has "DADADADADA" sfx. so they're stomping down the corridor with their guns crossed and facing each other. the "GO OH" in the bottom panel emphasizes the sudden burst into open air. unfortunately, anyone who values their life and sanity in this economy will not want to translate trigun's sfxs 100%.

i should have paid more attention when reading trigun in english. but i didn't so here i am. in the trigunbookclub tag now doing this.

can you tell me about the impact fascism has had on the current socio political state of italy and why heavily right wing and authoritarian politics are so popular currently?

omg yea of course

a lot abt this but 2 main things : 1 heavy censorship and 2 aesthetic focused politics

for some context italy has a national public broadcast RAI which is state owned and its required to pay for it in your taxes.

RAI is pretty much the biggest media outlet in italy and is known to have very strict censorship laws. they air some of the most important events : the sanremo music festival and the labour day concert.

all the speeches have to be read and approved before being said live. thats not even really a major deal cause these are some of the most viewed events in italy of course they would want to prevent people from saying certain types of things. the issue is in what they choose to censor tho. during the may 1st concert of a couple years ago, fedez (rlly famous italian singer) exposed right wing politicians by quoting homophobic lines theyve stated publicly like smth along the lines of 'all gays should be burned in an oven' and his speech wasnt approved and RAI had issues with him cause they wouldnt have allowed it to be said live if it went through checking first.

most recently a speech that was made to be aired during april 25th (liberation day and end of the fascism regime) was censored and had to be posted on twitter by the author

not regarding the censorship but in the sanremo music festival 2023 volley player paola egonu made a speech (approved by RAI) that resulted in backlash cause according to peoples reactions 'there is no racism cause we let her host for 1 night so she shouldn't complain'

for my second point 'aesthetic based politics' its a bit of a more complicated issue actually. if you watch a speech by the prime minister georgia meloni you would notice she brings up workers, the traditional family and god, all things that were also referenced by mussolini a lot. in the speech that made her gain more traction as a political figure and the speech she made before becoming prime minister she uses fear mongering to turn people to her side, in the first one she says legal documents saying 'parent 1 and parent 2' instead of mother and father means the downfall of the traditional family unit and in the more recent one she says the downfall of the economy will cause a crisis for the workers and the tradional family.

so right win politicians play a lot into the 'im one of you' side of things, that theyre working class and truly care about the people. matteo salvini (who used to be the major right wing politician) also used this for racist propaganda saying we 'cant let immigrants in cause theyll steal our jobs' ultimately it all plays into the same tactic of pretending the 'issue' will harm working class people just to get people on their side which was also a. fascist talking point during the regime

Emeros - he was raised by his wealthy aunt and uncle from the ages of 3-16, and from then on, they financially supported him for a long stretch of time. yes, he was the kind of young adult to use these funds irresponsibly, whether on drink or finery or people he fancied. but his family found out about this and, considering he would be chronologically in his 30s (or, the bosmeri equivalent of being 25), he was abruptly cut off from all funds and had to get very smart with his money very fast. this had led to him being a bit frugal with his coin unless necessary, though he does enjoy buying nice things for people he cares about. he is on the lower end of comfortable at the beginning of CotS.

Wyndrelis - like emeros, wyndrelis was also raised by wealthy family (in this case, his parents and grandmother) and got to live within the means of being local "nobility" - as in, his family was one of the founders of their town, and as such, he and his living relatives retained some of the status and wealth - but he is much more careful with his coin, even at a young age. he was disowned as a young adult, and so he had to be able to rely on himself and keep himself afloat. he's very good with math already and has very, very good memory, so he's wise with how he spends and what he does with money.

Athenath - athenath is the only one of the trio who came from poverty, actually! growing up in the wake of the Great War (the other two were born well before it), the economy was, well. in shambles. his family never had steady work, and so they grew up without a lot of things. they began to steal because they wanted things, first with basic necessities, and then larger thefts. fun fact, their mother was always trying to convince athenath to marry into nobility as a child.

Emeros - i wouldn't say any paranormal or divine experiences, per se. but as an alchemist, he has seen works of others bring people back from the brink of death early in his training, and he has also made potions, poultices, salves, and etc which have helped people who were either thought to be beyond help, or people who didnt know that someone would ever come to help them. i'd say he finds it thrilling, as its a major part of his motivation. actually, in chapter 18 iirc, i mention him not considering himself a "physick", which is a very old word for doctor. and he doesn't, but he is a capable healer, and thats enough for him.

Wyndrelis - experiences with the paranormal are just sort of par for the course when you're a mage, so yes. he finds it academically thrilling and very important to his work and his development as a scholar, but doesn't really consider anything to be "divine".

Athenath - in chapters 24-28, the trio have to handle daedric prince meridia's quest, "at the break of dawn". this is probably the earliest, true paranormal/divine experience he's ever had, and it both excites and scares them in that it's a very arduous experience, clearing her temple, but it's also something that makes him feel a little important. but it does make them think about divinity and what it means here and there.

Today, the top 1% is only taxed at 43% and has been dropping since Ronald Reagan’s presidency. Reagan also set the precedent of ignoring labor and union rights, violating both domestic (NLRA, Wagner Act) and international (United Nations bill of rights) law. This too has only ever been made worse by Republican policy as time has gone on with yet more tax cuts for the wealthy. Look up the actual policies. Don’t take a politicians word, read their actual policy. They will and do lie to you.

Do y’all understand now why the US debt is going up so fast? It’s because Trump cut that tax rate even more, amassing a whopping 20% of our current total national debt within only 4 years. The debt ceiling was raised THREE TIMES during Trump’s presidency, the uppermost tax bracket was cut even more, and massive corporate bailout loans were forgiven. Research the PPE loans. This has been Republican policy for 40+ years.

The systemic deconstruction of the middle class and the government in favor of corporate control. We are living in a repeat of the Gilded Age of the Industrial Revolution. The railroads and the banks own and control everything, including the government.

These are facts. Read it in any history book.

Or you can just ban those books too and pretend it didn’t happen. That would be a mistake though.

If you wanna know how our economy has REALLY been doing for the last 40 years, I suggest looking into the Economic Policy Institute. Or ask any working class American how they have been doing lately, especially those of us who are young, trying to make it.

They each have their own strengths which makes them have more proficient teams such as execs business skills making them better manipulators and makes the team have a better economy. Scis inate ability to craft weapons of mass destruction make their team good bomb users and poison makers. Kings magic and pacificsm makes them a less active offensive team and much better at just holding their own until the time is ready. Lead, being extremely good at weaponry, has a super strong army which makes them a more powerful force. Essentially instead of the games its all out war, fighting over the land and everything around it. Some teams are more active than others, specifically king being more of a pacificst.
