Hi Niuniente, can anyone be considered/label themselves as punk? I'm a big fan of punk rock and the ideals of self expression (more so now more than ever thanks to Hobie Brown + the enterity of Spiderverse) but it feels like I'd be a poser for saying I'm 'punk' due to growing up in a middle class suburbian area.

Sure, why not, if you ask me. Every group, whether punk, manga, lolita, goth, black metal, reggae, cosplayers etc. have their own "Elitists" who will tell you that you need to perform that thing the way X, V, I and P. Then, and only then, you are accepted as True Thing X. But, from my experience, the TRUE people of any genre or underground group are the ones who are most accepting, adapting and supporting of anyone who wants to be in the group. Everyone is a beginner at first, right?

You don't have to earn your rights for underground movements but you're expected to be a certain way once you decide to join in. In punk, resist oppression, aim for equality and kindness for everyone, fight the injustice and just generally don't be an asshole (like so many are). You can do this just simply being a kind, just person, who considers the well-being of others, especially those who need help.

In short; Be genuine and honestly kind and that is enough. It's a far less common than you'd think! Be an ally for those, who need support and who are oppressed by the mainstream.

And if needed, don't hesitate to use your teeth to fight for a good cause.

Story Length Poll

Now that 'Nothing's Wrong with Dale' is wrapped up and my work busy season is coming, I'll be taking a writing hiatus for the first few months of 2024. still, i'm trying to plan out what my next projects are going to be.

so i wanted to try to get a feel for what people prefer when it comes to story length as such, please see below!

Short Story: between 4 to 10 chapters (from ~15k to 35k words)

i normally do a mix of short and long stories, but i've been pretty busy lately so i keep defaulting to just the long story

obviously with a mix of short and long, both stories i'm posting will take longer, but there wouldn't be such a long wait for the long story to pay off, but there wouldn't be as many short stories as quickly.

just trying to get a sense of what people are interested in!

i'll probably put up some polls for different candidates for short and long stories, based on ideas I already have, after this poll finishes for next year

How to lose a guy in 10 days au but make it Kurotsuki

Tsukishima as Andie Anderson aka the one who will choose a guy (Kuroo) and make him leave after 10 days after endlessly teasing (torturing) him

Kuroo as Benjamin Berry who has to make Tsukki fall in love with him for a bet

They quarrel and realise it's a bet from both parts but in the end they realise they are helplessly in love with each other and can't stay away from each other

I recently got back on the My Hero Academia train (pretty far behind in the manga) and was thinking about doing a poll on who would win in a fight between these two. Antagonist vs protagonist, magician vs villain, both fire powers, you get it.

But then I thought, "...no, Sypha wins this one no contest."

Here’s why:  Leaving out her ice and lightning abilities, Sypha has a lot more precision control over her fire; she doesn't always just send out a jet of flame and hope she hits the target. (Remember, Twice had to get out of the way in order for Dabi to attack Hawks.) Plus, Sypha doesn't have the self-incineration risk Dabi has.

But the true deciding factor of why Sypha wins this fight is the fact that so far as I’ve seen, Dabi (as well as Endeavor and Shouto) can’t control fire that he didn’t create himself. They aren't stealing each others' flames to fight.

Sypha can.

So by virtue of her literally combusting a fire-breathing demon from the inside out, get wrecked, Touya.

It'd be one thing if they were equally matched in this fight, but it's hard to combat someone who can literally steal your fire and deflect it or send it back.

It's also the same result if she were to go up against Shouto. He's a heavy hitter on the team, sure, but he doesn't have the same kind of versatility with his Quirk as Sypha does with her magic. Same as the flames, she can also utilize external sources such as a forming ice out of raindrops. And again, she's not going to burn herself or give herself frostbite by using either of these abilities, so her only restrictions are energy and creativity.

There's also the fact that Sypha doesn't just leave it to long range attacks. She gets up close and ends you brutally with no fucks given. It takes a special kind of savage to roast a vampire alive, casually toss aside the corpse, and walk away like it's another Tuesday.

Don't get me wrong, I love both Shouto and Dabi as characters, but respect the queen.

the weirdest thing so far is simply the fact that this comic is still a hit with The Youths™️

i kinda just started posting about my silly little oc without thinking about it too deeply because this is a comic series from before a lot of people who seem to really like it were born- which is NOT a dig or discouragement AT ALL. it's such a fun series and i found it really cathartic when i was an angry, nerdy teenager. im really happy it continues to thrive with new fans also discovering it

When you come from groups that are vilified, and see yourself in the person that the movie or the book wants you to think is bad, it’s only natural to question the narrative.

Were they really so bad? They’re like you. Are you bad?

Or did they merely have the temerity to break the rules of politesse that govern respectability?

You know how hard it is to stay within the lines of acceptability or even recognizability that other people draw for you.

Were they only monstrous because that was the role assigned them?

Did they actually make some rather good points?

I’m so so excited for the kids growing up now who can maybe find themselves in the heroes, too.

This comic gets growing up with villainy as the dream—and then offers an opportunity for the vilified to explore heroism.

You can tell how deep this got me, because this post is spaced out so nonsensically.

It's annoying when Google keyboard underlines my Finnish ad hoc compound words that are spelt completely correctly. They should implement a special case for Finnish where it indicates that it's not a standard compound word but that it is spelt correctly. Then again Google keyboard doesn't know many completely normal and common Finnish words and especially their declined and conjugated forms. Really the only feasible way to implement Finnish spell checking properly is to store the root of each word and the conjugation or declination class it belongs to (despite common belief to the contrary those do exist; there are 27 conjugation types and 51 declension types) and then generate those forms programmatically on the fly or else you're storing literally millions of strings for a few myriad words.
