I've read a lot of fics where Bashir gains enough self awareness to realize that his little "frontier medicine" spiel was a fucked up thing to say to Kira.

I understand the wish fulfillment. However. Let us be for real for just one moment:

Julian said that and immediately forgot about it.

Kira has logged it in her memory and weighed every new piece of information about the good doctor against that fucked up thing he said about her homeland. But Julian was already three thoughts past it as soon as the words were out of his mouth. He will never think about that sentence again. He will never realize why he made a terrible first impression. Unless someone sits him down and explains point by point why it was a messed up thing to say, he will never understand. And no one is going to do that.

honestly i have no qualms against going yeah, totally (because, well. 23rd century, after all.) but then again variety is the spice of life and there is just something about underboob and a glimpse of that abdomen that hits SO hard. so i guess f!kirk utilizes this particular... diplomatic strategy constantly loll

all told, Unification will probably not affect how I write (future) fic or engage with fandom, but I did find it genuinely satisfying. it's not the best possible end for the characters, but it's still a resolution for them that we never had previously. it takes away some of canon's bitter edge. i'm quite happy to ignore generations & aos as far as the fates of spirk prime are concerned (or fix it in other better ways), but i like knowing that even with those bits of 'canon', it isn't so bleak anymore. y'know? it's an affirmation that they are connected, in some way, and that they aren't alone, and sure, I can and do write that for myself, but. i like that i don't have to, all the time. i'm not sure i'm making sense

It's impossible to write a TOS x Any other Series crossover [for me] without having to think about whose lens it's going to primarily be from because the vibe of TOS is so distinct and I think quite different from all series that follow it. The way the characters speak and are presented is so theatrical and of course steeped in the past that I find myself considering if this is, say, Janeway meeting Kirk (through a VOY perspective) or if I should write Janeway as she would appear if she stepped through a portal and was in TOS' universe.

I found Spock’s treatment in Ishmael really interesting- when he loses his memories, he’s obviously unaware that he is half human, believes himself to be fully alien but knows nothing more than that. When asked he is not sure that he has ever had a home, but when he recognizes San Francisco it’s very nearly emotional. All the people around him accept that he’s different than they are, and yet he worries that if he married and had a child, that child would belong nowhere. There’s really been no situation where he has been made to feel othered, after an initial attempt to convince him to marry, everyone leaves him alone on the subject.

Spock makes an argument on behalf of the women in the town who were brought there as a result of a wager, knowing that he understands their feelings and only experiences some slight shame about it, alongside a vague impression he ought to be more upset, and finds that reaction confusing. When he regains his memories he starts thinking about how he got involved in the humans’ gross and stupid issues and how appalling that is.

I think the contrast Barbara Hambly depicted is so fascinating- on one hand you have how Spock understands himself and the world, and on the other how the people around him understand him.

Bringing Jim and McCoy into it, Jim accepts Spock as he is and where he is, while I think McCoy gets upset with the knots Spock ties himself into.
