As an elder Millennial myself, I think the important lesson to take away from this is that there's no such thing as a feminist prince. A lot of fans projected Colin's qualities onto Luke to an inaccurate degree. He had a job to do on the press tour and all he had to do was try to match Nic's energy. I don't think he's as bad of a person as everyone's making him out to be, but I do think he has some serious blinders on and he's bonded with some people who ultimately aren't good for him. It's sad to see how something that could've been a huge launching pad ended up being a diving board that broke under him. (I also think the fandom is mad hypocritical and if they got even so much as a whiff of him being single, they'd change their tune really quickly and it'd be the Luke Love Train all over again.)

Anon, you brought up a good point that I haven't covered. I do, personally, believe that a lot of the confused feelings and outrage over Luke and his actions stems from fan projection that got out of hand - not just with Luke/Colin, but also with Nicola/Penelope. To me, Luke's portrayal of Colin has been excellent - I think his version of Colin is both charming and easily excitable about gossip and niche subjects (I'll never get over the olive joke). He's also totally made for the female gaze, and even moreso because he just so happens to fall in love with his best friend, the perpetually overlooked and looked down upon wallflower Pen. He sees what's special about her and falls in love with her - which I think allowed the audience to wonder "If someone like Colin can love Pen, then perhaps I could have something similar." (That is a very, very basic, surface-level interpretation that I'm throwing out here.) Also, I think the constant reminders that Luke was the most like his character in Bton, as well as his behaviors during the press tour, meant that when the PR Stunt happened, it caused so many to go, "What the fuck?"

As for Nicola, just using myself as an example - and bear in mind that I am a cishet, female, elder Millenial - I connected with her as an actress first and then Pen second. I didn't "find my successful career path" until I was 31 myself - so I feel like I understand how much it means to her that she's really taking her rightful place in the spotlight now. I have so much to be thankful for where I am in life right now, but I also know I had to work my ass off for it and there was no safety net for me to fall back on. So to know how hard she's worked and how far she's come, I'm going be honest and potentially open myself up to criticism - I was honestly offended for her when everything kind of blew up in the fandom. Did she need me to be offended on her behalf? Of course not, but I needed the time and capacity to process what I was feeling and come to a better headspace. Even though I do ship Lukola, most of my bitter feelings at the time were around: I can't believe anyone would want to take away from all the work N has done over the past 6 months (and 2 years, if we're being honest, in regards to S3) by taking away from the premiere and making it about an alleged gf.

That was a very long-winded way of saying yes, I agree that some parasocial boundaries were blurred - most likely because of the absolutely crazy amount of content we were fed during the press tour - and projections, for lots of various reasons, occurred, so when the aforementioned crash in expectations happened (whether or not it's right or fair), it was a Big Hurt for many fans.

I think a lot of fans don't believe him to be a bad guy, just making some bad choices right now??? And even though intellectually, people understand that it's his life and therefore his choices, it's still be difficult to watch. I think I can also firmly say that many of us feel like a change to his friend group would be a smart move in the path forward - but again, our wants and wishes mean very little in reality.

It's sad to see how something that could've been a huge launching pad ended up being a diving board that broke under him.

When I tell you I physically winced while reading this sentence because oooouffff, but true. But, as others have pointed out, we don't know what he wants to do with his career. Maybe he was more ambitious and the jobs he was going for didn't pan out. Maybe he's still waiting for the right role to come along. Maybe he's perfectly happy doing Bton every 2 years (omg, freaking kill me with that longass timeframe). As previously stated, until he or his team make any sort of statement - all we can do is make chatter and noise.

(I also can totally see your last point. I would hope that for the fans like me, who don't put him on a pedestal but still really like and support him, this wouldn't be the case. But I've also see firsthand on Twitter those in the fandom would give him a free pass if he was single again 🤷🏻‍♀️

hello! i have a genuine question, because i am actually really clueless and would like to know more about it?

what exactly is the little!reader/ddlg(?) concept? i'm sorry if it sounds stupid, i really mean this as a genuine question. is the reader literally a child and their partner is like an actual father??? or are they actually in a relationship, it's just that the reader is in a "little" sub space(?) where their partner takes care of them?

First of all, you don't need to apologize or fear getting hate or anything like that. I'm here for you and I love that you asked when you saw something you weren't familiar with.

Second, to answer your question, little!f!reader is simply an old enough and consenting female who willingly regresses in age, getting herself in little space (just like sub space in BDSM like you mentioned) and so she becomes under the care of her significant other or her "daddy". It is mostly not sexual and it involves softness and care more than sexual activities.

Older people can regress in age alone, privately or with a partner they trust because it is a calmer, safer headspace to be in.

In my stories, my characters do it because it becomes too heavy for them to always have to deal with real life as responsible grownups all the time, so they regress to a headspace where all they could worry about is finishing their fruit snacks or coloring a full page in their coloring books.

I'm not a fan anymore due to my own personal reasons, but I want to be objective. Timothee wants wrong to ask that worker not to stake pics. He's in character, and it was unprofessional for them to consider the eclipse over their job. Also, after seeing Tom filing TCR in new York and dealing with paps and fans asking for pics, I can understand why he was paranoid and off cause he's in character but also feels violated if that makes sense. I think Timothee may be a bit of the method and also struggles with some type of anxiety. He's very paranoid recently, so maybe being as famous as he has created that more. There was a time he was so open, and noe hes closed off. Whenever he's papped, he wears a mask, so maybe idk im speculating.

However, this isn't the first case. I've heard of this diva behaviour on set, unfortunately. There were rumours on DM a few yrs ago that alleged some crew workers in London about his antics whilst filming Wonka, and he was unpleasant to a female PA for messing up his umbrella request. There were several sources who cosinged this, but because he's big, it didn't go any further than those rumours.

He apologised the next day and gave them signed pics of the merch, lol. At the time, as a fan, I considered that he was dealing with the aftermath of his grandma passing cause it was during that time, so maybe this time he's dealing with the pressure of being Bob Dylan. I'm not defending him cause I'm not a fan, but actors in some cases do lose themselves in roles. I even remember during the press for Dune 1, Rebecca said timothee was more of a character actor than she is. When they said cut, he's still in that headspace, whereas she's making jokes.

Even Z said during a q&a for Dune 2 when she visited set, Timothee was standoffish cause he was in character. He apologised for that. I'm more shocked at the accusations of the director allegedly pushing a worker and not caring cause directors egos are never fun to work with moreso an actor imo.

Timothee is tricky to discuss because hes changed a lot, so who can defend him without their own personal bias? Before, he was very open with fans, and now it's only due to work that he works when he does with his fans unless it's for himself. He doesn't gonna podcasts anymore or has personal interviews. It's not bad, but it can be jarring as those fans became accustomed to his accessibility but now all they do is criticise his dating life with conspiracy CC, lol.

I'm really a fan anymore, so I didn't think this article was going to hurt him, but I find it interesting that his agent isn't disproving it...

I don't think there's ever an excuse to be mean and rude to people, so if this is the type of person that he is onset, then that's disappointing. 😔

I do agree that sometimes, people don't realize that a set is STILL a working environment, and sometimes it can be pretty serious! Some people just don't take it seriously and can be a nuisance, which can cause some actors to get annoyed. I know some actors can also get into character and have a hard time getting out of it.

Some also are trying to do a serious scene, and an interruption or disruption can break focus, and cause an actor to have to re-do a take, which is more time, energy, and money spent involved for everyone.

Weren't there some reports one year from an extra on the set of "Cherry" that said that Tom got a bit angry/frustrated with someone on set during the Emily overdose scene at the hospital because someone kept breaking his concentration or smthg? 🤔 I feel like I vaguely remember that from somewhere. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Either way, I guess my point is, I suppose it can happen to anyone? 🤷🏾‍♀️ We all can lose our cool sometimes.

I'll give an actor grace if it's a once or two time thing, but if it's a PATTERN with someone, then that is no Bueno for me. 😤

One of my biggest pet peeves are people who are just rude to others for no good reason at all. 👎🏾

A Clash of Kings - 18 SANSA II (pages 254-262)

Sansa risks a potential trap for potential freedom, and has an uncomfortable chat with a drunken Sandor on her return trip.

The angry purple bruise Ser Meryn had given her had faded to an ugly yellow, but still hurt. His fist had been mailed when he hit her. It was her own fault. She must learn to hide her emotions better so as not to anger Joffrey. When she heard that the Imp had sent Lord Slynt to the Wall, she had forgotten herself and said, "I hope the Others get him." The king had not been pleased.

The people who think Sansa was having a jolly old time in KL after her father's beheading confuse me. How can you read the text and not hurt for her? How can you read it and not understand she's a victim of long term abuse she can't escape, but she's trying, she is doing her best and holding on to hope and she is so filled with anger that sometimes it slips out because no one can be as perfect as she needs to be because there is no perfect enough for abusers like Joffrey. Her survival might not look as "girlboss" as some of the other female characters in this series, but my gosh Sansa is doing amazing and deserved so much better.

If only she had someone to tell her what to do. She missed Septa Mordane, and even more Jeyne Poole, her truest friend. The septa had lost her head with the rest, for the crime of serving House Stark. Sansa did not know what had happened to Jeyne, who had disappeared from her rooms afterward, never to be mentioned again. She tried not to think of them too often, yet sometimes the memories came unbidden, and then it was hard to hold back the tears. Once in a while, Sansa even missed her sister. By now Arya was safe back in Winterfell, dancing and sewing, playing with Bran and baby Rickon, even riding through the winter town if she liked.

I wonder if it would be better or worse for her to know, the fact that she's deliberately not thinking of them says worse. I wonder if part of her suspects Jeyne is not okay, or that Arya hasn't really made it back to Winterfell, if she's convincing herself that Arya's fine because it means one less horror to contend with in her darker headspace moments.

If it is some trap, better that I die than let them hurt me more, she told herself. She hid the blade under her cloak.

Desperate courage, but courage all the same. She did such a good job sneaking all that way.

She makes the sept sound so pretty.

Lady would have liked this place, she thought. ... And what will they do to me? Sansa found herself thinking of Lady again. She could smell out falsehood, she could, but she was dead, father had killed her, on account of Arya.

Sad though it is, I do like that Sansa isn't just forgetting about Lady, that even know the bond and the wolf still mean something to her. Still being angry at Arya because it's easier than being afraid for her, I see. But babe, Arya might have been in the wrong place, but it was Joffrey who chose to escalate, and Cersei who chose to demand a death, come on Sansa, you're too far past knowing what they are to pin all the blame on Arya. (Times you get to say "Yay, team effort" but the outcome was literally The Worst.)

"Think I'm so drunk I'd believe that?" He let go his grip on her arm, swaying slightly as he stood, stripes of light and darkness falling across his terrible burned face. "You look almost a woman... face, teats, and you're taller too, almost... ah, you're still a stupid little bird aren't you? -"

rp pet peeves : I don't necessarily have a lot of pet peeves, but perhaps not giving me much to work with, anon hate, oc and female muse hate, and how sometimes single ship muses are treated. I know the ac fandom and rpc is really small and basically inactive, but I saw a huge dip in activity for Jacob when I made him single ship when the ac rpc was more active. I get it that people want to ship. I do have characters I would like to ship with, but it just got annoying to me on how Jacob was so full of activity, but when I switched him to be single ship, he had like no activity. It just kind of showed me that some people were only into Jacob for shipping purposes when he had all this development and thought I put into him. It just felt really unfair to me. This isn't really the case recently with him, but its just what I noticed.

fluff, angst, or smut : I enjoy all three, honestly. It just depends on the muse. For angst, it might take me a bit to get to things because I need to be in the right headspace and mood for it. I use all three for character development and exploration.

plots or memes :  I haven't been into memes so much, more into continuing them from others because I've been trying to focus more on my drafts. So plots? Maybe? Memes can be a really good ice breaker and a good start to a thread that can be added and worked upon.

long or short replies :  My replies tend to be long, but really long replies can take a while for me to get to because it just takes a lot out of me energy-wise. So those threads are often tackled later. Probably a good medium between short and long? I don't really write stuff shorter than two paragraphs.

time to write:  Recently, day time, but usually whenever I'm not absolutely tired.

are you like your muses : I wish tbh. A lot of the time I pick a muse that is so different from me, or have traits I wish I had. I wish I had Sean's charisma and confidence. I wish I had Evie's intelligence and bravery. I wish I had Hewlett's perseverance. In general, I'm most like Cassie with some of my family dynamics (hers are very, very extreme), some of her traits, and her predicament in life in trying to understand herself and finding connection with others. But I also wish I was more like Cassie.

The first character I fell in love with

Honestly, I’m pretty sure I really loved Mikoto to begin with! He didn’t remain my favourite for a long time, but if I’m remembering right, he was the entire reason I actually picked up the show and continued watching, because I really enjoyed his character design.

The character who is my ‘baby’

Both Eric and Bandou kind of give me ‘must protect them and make them live happy lives’ feelings. And, despite how much I do make fun of him, I do have a soft spot for Fushimi.

The character who I do not understand

It’s not so much not understanding, but I do find Yata incredibly hard to write. He’s complicated for me to really crawl into the headspace of and to get the tone and voice down for his character while writing him so it is a challenge, though I do my best.

The character that I think the show ruined

I won’t say ruined but honestly, I found Shiro mostly interesting early on. Not my favourite but definitely an interesting character to watch, while I did find that I actually started wishing, as things went along, to see anyone else when he got on the screen because he just wasn’t holding my attention or making me curious or interested.

The most attractive male and female character

Okay, but yeah, given the show, there’s only maybe five female characters period despite having huge amounts of male characters so picking the most attractive female was really, really easy. It’s Seri! As for males, I do find Dewa, Bandou and Munakata attractive.

The character death that was the worst for me

It was Mikoto, up until I read MOR. Then Totsuka’s death, even knowing that it was coming, became the one that still hits me in the feels because I got really attached to Totsuka while reading that.

The character that is the most like me

I really do feel a connection and just a sense of understanding when it comes to both Fushimi and Bandou, for different reasons. I just 'click' with both characters and would say I'm kind of a mix between them.

The character that I just want to be happy

All of them, really, but especially my HOMRA alphabet boys! I just love them so much and want them all to be happy, healthy, and living good lives.

A new manga hit Shonen Jump+, and I have some thoughts.

Beat & Motion seems to be part of my favorite niche anime/manga genre: Stories about a fairly specific craft written by someone who knows and cares about it. In this case, the craft is animation. It's not gonna be an Eizouken (since it's manga and not anime), but it could be neat.

But I'm not 100% certain that this is part of that genre, because chapter 1 spends a lot of time getting its protagonist into a particular headspace. He likes drawing and (basic flipbook) animation when he's a kid, then one bad incident drives him away from that, then he gets into a shitty band for a while, it eventually fails, he gets into a drunken argument with a girl, that argument makes him get back into animation, and said animation goes viral on Twitter.

It's lengthy and complicated, but I like it. It characterizes... um... Tatsuhiko pretty strongly in a way that jumping straight into animation probably wouldn't. He seems highly susceptible to preer pressure, jaded by failure, resentful towards people who had easy success, but not so jaded or resentful that he isn't willing to take a risk on his unlikely dreams.

The girl he got into a drunken argument is pretty strongly-characterized, too. She's Nico, a singer who Tatsuhiko has a thing for, though of course he didn't know that when he got into the argument. Tatsuhiko initially got into the band with dreams of marrying Nico (a singer who, I'd like to emphasize, he only knew by her singing voice), and his viral animation lands him a gig animating a music video for her.

This made me think of Bakuman, a specific-craft manga about manga where one of the main characters gets into manga to A. make a series that gets adapted into an anime that his sweetheart can voice the heroine in and B. marry her. There are differences, of course, and most of them are good for B&M. (Erm, maybe not the best acronym.) Nico has an actual personality, for instance, one that makes her clash interestingly with Tatsuhiko instead of just being a perfect little waifu for him.

I can definitely see this romance subplot souring, but it might not, and that puts Nico above any female character Oba's ever written. Nico seems designed to provoke character development in Tatsuhiko, and while we don't know much of what drives her, the reverse feels likely. And I dunno what alloromantics look for in a romance subplot, but mutually spurring character development is one of the big things for me.

Anyways, now for the funniest bit in the entire chapter. Nico shoves Tatsuhiko towards the road, we see a truck barreling forward, and...

...look, if you're familiar with the entire genre of anime/manga/light novels that start with the main character getting hit by Truck-kun after being pushed into traffic by something or another after hitting some new low point in their life, you'd understand why this was hilarious.

Movie Review | Single White Female (Schroeder, 1992)

This review contains mild spoilers.

I don't know how much this comes across in my writing, but I am not good at making new friends in real life. I am frequently socially awkward. I am usually not sure how much I want to open up and make myself vulnerable, so I can come across as either cold or a lousy conversationalist, or worse, downright weird. And when I do manage to make friends, there's sometimes a certain lingering insecurity, a question of whether they consider me to be as close a friend to them as I consider them to me that nags at the back of my neck. I think one of the reasons I find online interactions easier is that, depending on where you are on the internet, you're presenting that interiority up front, allowing people to get a sense of who you are and what interests you have before they begin talking to you, that helps cut out that initial awkwardness.

These are things that I was chewing over during the first act of Single White Female, which I think captures this tension in the Jennifer Jason Leigh character. When we first meet her, there's a certain ambiguity over whether this person is just awkward, overeager, excited to make a new friend, or whether this person really is insane. We see her gently insinuating herself into the life of Bridget Fonda's heroine, in ways that cross boundaries but with uncertain intent, but we see Fonda essentially do that same thing, as she starts going through Leigh's things when she thinks she isn't looking. This is a lot more invasive than going through someone's online posts and pulling up their social media profiles, but perhaps the impulses behind them aren't too far apart. When Fonda makes the decision to get back with her fiance, after Leigh has clung to her so closely and begun shaping her identity around her, I didn't find it hard to understand why Leigh would view this as a betrayal.

Leigh plays this material empathetically, and her performance is the primary reason to watch this movie. I am less enamoured, however, with the way the movie frames her. There are forebears for this movie's premise, but I don't get the sense the movie wants us to fully identify with Leigh's character, eyeing her from a distance, likely so it can function as a thriller through its initial ambiguity, but failing to implicate us in either her or the heroine's actions and motivations, like, say, Alfred Hitchcock was wont to do. My familiarity with Barbet Schroeder's work is limited to his documentaries, and perhaps there are similarities in how both this and General Idi Amin Dada gawk at their deranged subjects, but I think that works better in the unyielding pitch black cringe comedy framework of the other movie than in the slickly crafted thriller mode this movie operates in.

The style can likely be described as gentrified giallo, having some of the same verve and appeals to warped psychology, but never really committing to the perversity or externalizing the characters' headspace. The movie is far from sexless, but doesn't go in the more perverse directions that Hitchcock or one of the Italians could have taken it in. ("Not perverted enough" is another complaint coming out of my garbage viewing habits, although this time I can cite some classier directors.) There are appeals to yuppie anxieties, but no real sense of economic insecurity from either character (although these strains do allow the movie to introduce a nicely unctuous Stephen Tobolowsky performance). I feel like I am watching something play out from a distance, not like something is happening to me. But like I said, there is some good thrillering here, with two of its best moments (a chipper conversation where the heroine turns out to be gagged and duct taped to a chair, and an anguished monologue revealed to be a suicide note the villain is dictating) hinging on reversals, and at least one shot that looks suspiciously like a key image from Nightdreams. I have no idea if Schroeder's seen that other movie, but it's fun to speculate.

It's been a month and a half since I got back to my blorbos and started writing again, and I'm happy to feel like I've improved.

I'm also happy to have noticed that my beige writing flags still include the following:

- Giving characters with the least amount of screentime more dialogue, sometimes directly from the MC’s mouth because it suits them better.

- Making the MC physically, emotionally or mentally unavailable when the original dialogue makes them look like a spineless dummy or they have no dialogue. (They can still *be* a dummy, I just cut out all the recap dialogue and add reasonable intelligence.)

- MC more often than not, is a sarcastic deadpanning a-hole when I'm tired of a character’s cannon nonsense attitude.

- Soft spots for the MC I find has the most trauma, and reasonable/understandable reactions to it. They are not a rock, they need a nap, a listening ear, and possibly a hug.

- Removing an LI, SC or MC from a scene for something mundane like packing a suitcase, using the bathroom or not wanting to be in a space with another character they can't stand.

- Using a pet or small baby/toddler/child to call out the characters crappy behaviour indirectly or distract them from a situation. Mostly comic relief or to be cute when scenes are emotional or tense.

-Male MC is always the doting parent to their cannon child/children or fanchild. I physically cannot write at least one character in any story who doesn’t adore them.

- Putting the characters in outfits either due to obligation or the fact that the character loves/hates that clothing for the dialogue opportunities.

Bonus points if the reactions are body language more than dialogue.

- MC will develop in confidence instead of staying static, but will also have moments of vulnerability where they go in the opposite direction.

- Sex scenes between LI’s do not have blackouts where the reader gets confused about where the characters are. It’s a pet peeve and aftercare is important.

- Making sure there are transitions in between the scenes so characters do not magically appear and disappear with all their belongings suddenly where they need to be. Bonus points for making the MC/LI/SC mess up and forget something. Even if they are not human, they have something resembling humanity and it’s foils.

- There will be fan art. I hyperfixate and you will see lots of it, hand drawn, drawn digitally, or even commissioned. 🤩

Possible Red flags I always find in my writing -

- Giving the Characters their wildest dream/worst nightmare and having them realise how unprepared they are to test plot Armour and understand their headspace as a writer.

- Researching the changes of the character’s motivation to extremes and being obvious about it.

- Rich MC always shows affection for the group by splashing the cash even if they grew up modestly.

- Male MC is always written as if they are emotionally intelligent even if it takes a while for them to trust the others/Chosen LI/SC to talk to.

-Female MC/LI/SC starts off awkward as I struggle to write them. Usually takes a whole story and a half to get into that character’s head.
