as you said, she explores eeeverything with her hands – touching, grabbing, feeling ,, literally everything! the party love themselves a curious tot el .... until she tries touching a hot stove top or reaches for the hornet's nest in the park bc she has got to know exactly what this thing is, which means she has to touch it with her bare hands to understand

speaking of, the party all know of her regression & pitch in to help (*´˘`*)♡ max, lucas, & will could classify as her "main cgs" — mayhopclair agenda <33 & will big bro cg supremacy!! — but she loves everybody very much 💞

her regression doesn't have a specific age?? she acts differently & has particular skills depending on whether her regression is positive or vent-y – very mixed bag

hopper carries her around on his hip during her vent regression spells – el never asks; just one moment shes sitting on the floor, sulky & staring into space, the next she's way in the air, supported by strong arms & love <33

LOVES eggos with whipped cream & syrup with chocolate chip on top, kinda like what hopper made her in s2 (iirc). the hopper-byers fam have it like once every month or so bc it's almost disgustingly tooth-achingly sweet. joyce balances it out by adding their sliced fruit of choice on top

can, will, & has used her powers to reach the sweets joyce hid on the top cabinet. to her credit, joyce is excellent with hiding them ... but el is equally as excellent at finding them. no matter how obscure the hiding spot is, she'll find them. always >:-)

SKATING WAAABAAAA ꉂ(ˊᗜˋ*)♡!! she's not all that good in bigspace to begin with so it's not like she magically gets more balance when she's in Tot Mode 💀 given el is very very quiet abt her regression & doesn't like to be out where there are lots of ppl, max suggests they take her this abandoned skate park she found! it's perfect!

(no it's not, max & mike got into an 6-minute argument about el potentially face-planting into concrete & it ends with mike relunctantly agreeing IF ONLY she's got elbow pads, knee pads, AND wrist protectors)

lucas has a (baby) bag (technically it's el's but shhh) filled with bandaids, snacks, extra clothes, backup pacifiers ... literally everything useful you could ever imagine is in there bc lucas can never be too prepared. it's a scooby-doo bag!!

mike gets his pillows stolen by her & max for blanket forts, but they never tell him what they're doing with them. he'll ask “why do you guys keep stealing my pillows?” after el runs in to take his third one, but she'll giggle & run away. max tells him to mind his business & leaves. he finally gets up to see them making a blanket fort when will walks in to “borrow” his blanket

el & stickers? match made in heaven. every opportunity she gets, she's sticking them on something: the fridge, the toilet lid, dustin's cheek. EVERYWHERE! she even has a sticker pages specifically for her friends and family ,, she has them choose a sticker, she unpeels it, & sticks it on them like “ ‘ticker for you ... an’ a ‘ticker for you ... an’ dis one is for you...”

regressor max & regressor eleven duo says who? SAYS ME (﹡ˆ﹀ˆ﹡) those two are a mischievous duo, ask ANYBODY in the party 💀 max has such a foul mouth in & out of headspace, but she tries her best to keep her foul language at a minimum, but sometimes she slips up (especially if there isn't a cg around) & eleven just .. repeats her. max is like “ no no no el!! u can't say that!!!”, but she actually finds it hilarious & lowkey doesn't care HBSJDJE

(she doesn't care until a cg is around & el drops an sh-bomb & lucas specifically slooowly turns his head toward her💀💀)

self-indulgent pkmn au headcanon: el & mew 💞💞 mew is equally as curious as el is, so they explore new things together! ... while the rest of the party & their pokemon watch them like hawks to assure neither of them are trying to poke an exposed power cord

This script confirms my impression that the Duffers have always seen the Byers-Hopper family as the backbone and heart of the show, even more than the group of kids, the problem is they have just forgotten to *show* it so often in the last seasons!

I think they see the kids and party as the heart of the show; but in s1 it def was the Byers fam too. And I love the use of “our family” in the script and how it really does center on the family (+plus wheeler fam members, Nancy and Mike) as all together United. You do have more of a sense of that group of characters you see at the end/“our family” as central to “one last fight.” At least I hope they remember to make our family and all its members central to it! Because yes they def have forgotten. I feel like it’s a fight El and Will will have to go through, but everyone else around them, too.

But More about Jonathan being Vecna’d cause I feel like everyone had headcanon for everyone but him getting attacked.

Just first it seems like a conversation with Will, but then Wills words turn sour, blaming him for what’s happened and not being there for him. It’s an easy vulnerable spot to get Jonathan not to fight back or try anything. The guilt just eats at him so badly. He deserves this, it’s better him than Will (or if an AU where the Byers come back early before Max, better than any of the kids)

Vecna just sensing this emotionally vulnerable person and it’s an even easier target. Everyone so on edge guarding Max getting caught off guard by Jonathan now floating into the air.

Will getting kicked into overdrive, he fumbles to get a mixtape of Jonathan’s while yelling at everyone to do something. He grabs the Walkman out of Max’s hands and pushes Steve or someone taller to pop the headphones on before Jonathan’s up too high.

If it’s like max the first time around, they get him down and Will is clinging like glue. He cannot risk losing his brother, but now everyone is suggesting they use him as a bait to Vecna? Fuck that. He hates the plan, only going along with it because Jonathan allows himself to be the key. He says something like “I’m just glad it’s a different Byers this time.” With a weak smile.

The whole plan happens, but with Will keeping guard like Lucas and making sure the plan works. Joyce, Hop, Mike, and Argyle are with El, the others in their original positions.

The illusion is the same, but Jonathan can easily understand what’s happening now. These harsh words aren’t Will, now he’s just got to fight his guilt and hop from memory to memory. Instead of the dance, he ends up somewhere positive associated with his family or even with Nancy. It works for a while until Vecna finds him, the fight with him and El happen once again.

Poor El, seeing all these guilt ridden memories and now being forced to watch Vecna kill her older brother. It’s too much. And will :( seeing it’s not working on the outside. The damage actually happening and feeling so hopeless because he can’t do anything. The Walkman fell and shattered from Jonathan’s pocket.

When Vecna disappears and Jonathan is left in the same state Max was in canonically, it’s terrifying. Will use sobbing and screaming for anyone to call an ambulance while trying to reassure Jonathan he’s okay. Its not that bad, they’ll fix it. He’ll help his big brother for a change. Jonathan is clinging to him weakly, shaking and letting himself be scared in that moment.

Everyone in the hospital after :( The Byers-Hopper clan haven’t moved since he was treated.

Second of all, MY HEART.

Jonathan would be so emotionally vulnerable to the idea of Will also blaming him for everything. Will is Jonathan's one constant. His mom was always at worked to provide for them and their dad was... well, their dad. Will has been the one constant source of happiness and comfort for Jonathan. Will gave him purpose and he loves his brother so much. He loves Nancy and his mom, but Will is his greatest weakness because he holds himself personally responsible for Will.

And El watching her older brother die, especially in a situation where Jonathan would try to protect her while being in danger himself (like when Max tries to stab Vecna after he throws El), would destroy her. She'd be freaking out, Will would be freaking out (bonus points if Will has powers) because they're both watching their brother die in the inside and outside.

Will would refuse to leave his side. He would be devastated and he'd take it the hardest. He'd go off on everyone for wanting to use Jonathan as bait in the first place.

I agree. The Byers-Hoppers fam wouldn't leave his side. Will would be the one constantly right beside him, along with Joyce.

That would give Will motivation to kill Vecna, though.

Howdy Moxie!! You guess correctly, I do have an odd fascination with the ocean, hence the 'seasideselfships' user!! Great observation!  Domestic av.engers is 10/10 my comfort ship, to go back to when I need Soft Vibes. It's so fun to be a big ol found family!! As far as s/is, I would love for them to be friends, please-

Max and Xiomara would be such fun friends! I read a little of your s/i write-up, and I feel they'd get along swimmingly! They'd definitely have a bit to learn from each other, and I think they'd have fun teaching each other, maybe over tea!  And as far as Syntax, I play fast and loose with her story, so it wouldn't be much to move her to Xavier's!! She's been my ma.rvel and all related stuff s/i for ages and I kind of edit her backstory to fit her where I fit her. Would be very fitting though to add Xavier's to her timeline since I went back + rewatched the first couple movies + got Major Sibling Vibes from Charles - And yes FOB!!! There's mainly fob, a few p! ones and one or two mcr ones, bc I haven't grown out of my emo phase and I still love all that music, but I vibe super heavy with FOB so they got the honor of being most of my tags-

Now that I have successfully rambled a mile of stuff, on to answer questions! 👍The Good Part👍 ~ What moment made you realize that you had to be with your F/O?  For the Lo.st Bo.ys!  - I think the defining moment would be one night on the boardwalk, the boys stood up for Marina. As someone who had to hide what she was from her friends on shore in Key West, she was always afraid that revealing who she was would scare people away. And even knowing the boys weren't human, she was still wary. You never know how people will react. But one night she was alone before they got to the boardwalk, and they found her getting harassed by some ner-do-wells and scared them off. That was proof to Marina that they cared. 

🌃Chelsea Streets🌃 ~ If you could go anywhere, where would you and your F/O wanna vacation at? How would it go? With the Johnathan & the rest of the Byers fam + Hopper? Like a big family trip? Byers Hopper clan road trip? Oh boy. We'd probably embark on a massive camping trip, I wanna say north Michigan. Considering I'm familiar, it'd be super fun. Platte River Campground. I've got no clue if it was around in the 80s, but that's a great place for the fam to camp + see all the sights north Michigan has to offer, like porcupine mountain, the lake in the sky, and of course the bridge.

Getting dressed up, fancy party style. Dancing with Stefan, swoon.  A funnier memory is Stefan giving her the "I'm a vampire" speech and Max laughing and telling him she had a feeling, which leads to a conversation about her abilities.

The Byers have supernatural powers that Joyce passed down to Will and Jonathan

It would be a great storyline that would bring together a lot of the unanswered questions left in S1 regarding how Will, Joyce and Jonathan are able to communicate with each other and even other people through the dimensions. It would also introduce a lot of new intriguing mysteries, like how maybe it’s the connection to the Upside Down that gives people these supernatural powers in the first place. It would give this family - the emotional core of the entire show - a whole new exciting perspective and different outlook than before, but it would also bring them closer together more than ever before. They would have to face tremendous strife and coming to terms with what this means for all of them. It might even stir feelings of regret and blame and guilt, like Joyce having to face the fact that she underwent experiments without (at first) considering the consequences it would have for her children and the incredible gift but also responsibility that they now have towards others. There may exist a timeline where Joyce and Hopper get together and Will, Jonathan and Eleven essentially become siblings. It would bring up what-if scenarios like Jonathan suddenly relating to Eleven on a whole new level because that could’ve been him, he could’ve been the child stolen from his broken down mother at birth, and he grows very close and protective of her very quickly. See Will and Eleven becoming best friends because they have both been through that horrible trauma that runs in the wake of these abilities. Imagine if you will a story where maybe Eleven, one of the only people somewhat experienced when it comes to the supernatural, is forced away from the core group and increasingly weird things keep happening to the Byers and they’re confused and scared and don't have Eleven to ask for advice and Hopper - who has ties to Hawkins Lab and the people that work there - sets out to investigate to find Eleven, but along the way finds out about this terrifying truth and how amazing that plot twist would be. Can you see a world where the characters go back to the first season and all of the little hints laid out become clear as day and that revelation and incredible attention to detail? Just fathom Joyce overcome by guilt by all of this and her sons coming to her and saying, with tears in all of their eyes, that as long as they have each other they can face anything, and then they hug it out because they just love each other so much?

Can you see how cool it would be to have the Byers at the end of a season, the softest, purest family on the face of the earth that want nothing more than protect those closest to them, come together, shoulder their newfound strength, and kick some serious monster ass, humanoid or otherwise, to say NO to the powers that hurt them and their loved ones???

Who do you predict will die?

So hard to say. I don't have super confident guesses tbh ...

New characters seem the most obvious to die.

I mean I thought eddie would die before a single trailer was released - and it was because of a single promotional image that appeared to foreshadow his death - link Here. But who knows maybe they'll surprise us.but other scenario... he's stuck in prison. Either way , not great.

They could k*ll hopper' s russian friend- dmitri . Plus yuri. Maybe a bit too obvious. Given alexi. But I could see it . Yuri is a douche so he's probably for sure done-zo. He Even made up a fake story about "yuri dying".

I kind of could maybe see Jason quickly getting vecna-ed and dying similar to fred. He definitely has enough tra*ma- because of his gf and friend dying. And that could be how the secondary antagonist's story closes.but I could see lther alternative possibilities for him. ...

argyle may be another bob newby. Another pure soul who just wanted the best for the byers fam- and got dragged into the crazy supernatural business ,only to die (and he deserved better- camp) . I'm still not over bob... so poor argyle if that's the case.  I hope he makes it. 

As far as older established characters

Idk maybe murray ...no offense but we as a fanbase could survive his passing. XD. Also am anon told this- risotta is called "death dish" (which murray made).

Maybe Karen (that part 1 trailer showed she was in danger)... and now she and the rest of the parents are getting more involved in the plot. 

Brenner ? (the lab is exploding and the army is shooting guns everywhere . I could see him die then. But I could also see sullivan just take him prisoner for info- as a later s5 plot thread). I could see owens maybe dying too- he already almost died at a lab in the past.

People who prob won't die ... but like the 1% chance is making me paranoid ...

I don't think she'd die tbh. But elmstreet dreamwarriors was said to inspire s4. Freddy k (inspo for vecna) kills nancy thompson (inspo for nancy) in a dream,in said movie. So it makes me a tiny bit worried. Even if it's fairly fairly unlikely. I just feel like the duffers love her too much. So I think she'll make it - even if a close few calls. My gut thinks... she'll probably be fine.

I'm not sure why... something in my gut is worried for steve (i feel like as an actual main he's the most likely candidate to die). But the fanbase is so obsessed- that I think he'll probbe fine . Levy said Steve is safe becuse he loves him too much. But, it's not the first time the crew lied though? Steve is prob ok. It may mean completely nothing but I did not like dustin telling Steve "if you die . I die". Or in s4 "fight to the de*th". Or robin saying to steve she's worried it won't work out for them . But idk ... I just can't see any of the main kids dying. Same goes for robin as she's literally the only confirmed out character at the moment. But Steve- idk.. he may do something risky to save others. He's already had close calls in s1,2,3, and 4 jumping into danger to save others.

I still think the season ends with a pretty bleak ending (regardles of how many or few deaths there are). where the Hawkins crew didn't really fully win. Hawkins is probably in shambles (caused by vecna/sullivan's troops/ the delirious hawkins mob). And I think maybe El overuses her powers and maybe ends up in a coma after "saving the day" . I know sounds odd ...but it has foreshadowing and would be bleek . Later, in s5 she would be fine though. Post about that theory here. I could also see at the end of s4: joyce and co stranded in the soviet union with no way back (for a while). And then who knows lonnie may get custody of Will because of that- and so the byers brothers are separated , and Will's stuck with a human monster. Or instead poor Will is stuck in the ud with vecna- a literal monster. And bam that's the s4 cliffhanger. Like there's alot of ways to have a messed up ending without k*lling a bunch of people off.

If Billy Is Alive, Where Is He? (Introduction)

So far I’ve focused on proving that Billy is alive and has to come back, or the Duffers have broken their own promises. Naturally, other questions follow from this: “Alright, then where the hell is he? And how did he survive getting impaled multiple times?”

To the second question, my answer is: “He didn’t.” His death was real.

To the first question, I’ve observed two predominant theories. (1) He’s in Russia. (2) He’s in the Upside Down.

Well, what if I told you we can combine the two... while still maintaining that Billy actually died?

First, let's explore the foreshadowing for Billy being imprisoned in Russia. From what I've seen, it's already been discussed extensively, so I won't dwell on it too long.

1) In the sauna sequence, he passes in front of a Fourth of July poster, which looks like an American flag. (I've already discussed the significance of the crown of stars behind him.)

2) The "Flayed In The USA" photoshoot puts him in front of the American flag. It also associates him with a politically oriented album, Born In The USA by Bruce Springsteen. The titular song even has the following lyrics:

Got in a little hometown jam So they put a rifle in my hand Sent me off to a foreign land...

Well THAT'S interesting.

3) The Heather's house scene uses the song "American Pie" by Don McLean. This could be nothing, but when I place it alongside the other evidence, it raises my eyebrows.

4) The sauna sequence could be interpreted as foreshadowing for Billy being imprisoned in a Russian cell.

To me, this is the most intriguing and compelling evidence out of everything I've covered. The Duffers are fond of reversals and parallels; I've seen many instances of them taking a concept from one season and putting a new spin on it for the next. The sauna sequence practically begs for this treatment.

Think about it. From the sauna alone, we know exactly how Billy would react to being imprisoned. We don't even have to imagine very hard! We've heard him scream, "Let me out!" We've seen him break down and weep. We've heard him plead hoarsely for mercy. We've even seen him go feral as he tries to break down the door.

All of that... just from being trapped in a sauna by a bunch of kids.

If you ask me, the scene plants a seed. It tells us, "Hey, Billy finds being imprisoned hella traumatizing. Seriously, it's awful. You should feel sorry for him."

Escalate the situation to Billy-as-political-prisoner-and-test-subject, and you've got yourself a recipe for painnnnn.

Overall, the foreshadowing suggests we're going to become acutely aware of Billy's status as an American.

And yet, the evidence for him returning from the Upside Down is also compelling. If you've been following my meta, you might be able to list the reasons yourself. In case you haven't, I'll summarize:

The Upside Down is symbolized by water, and Billy has an intimate relationship with water.

Billy is a Christ figure, and that implies he'll return from the underworld, i.e. the Upside Down. (Seriously, if Billy just hops on a boat and leaves Russia that way, I'll be happy he's alive... but I will also scream and throw things, because WHY WOULD YOU WRITE THAT)

"Easy," you might say. "He escapes Russia via the Upside Down. Boom! Both theories."

Ah, but that doesn't explain how he got there, fam. Or how he could've survived Starcourt.

Tell ya what. I'll go ahead and lay out my top theory for what's gonna happen. No in-depth explanations yet, just pure story for now.

Billy really died at Starcourt. Hopper may have also... OR he escaped through the Gate and emerged in Russia.

Either way, we're going to find out the Russia we saw at the end of S3, and the one where Hopper is a prisoner, is not our Russia. It's a Russia in an alternate universe.

In this universe, Billy (and possibly Hopper, if he died in ours) survived Starcourt but fell into the hands of the Russians. Intrigued by Billy's superstrength - which he still possesses (!!!), despite severing his link with the Mind Flayer - they've taken him to Kamchatka and are running tests on him. They want to find out how to create more people like him - supersoldiers who can rip their enemies in half and survive being blasted through brick walls with barely a scratch.

Hopper and Billy learn of each others' presence in Kamchatka. They also learn there's a Gate that will take them through the Upside Down to the Prime Universe. Together, they concoct a plan to escape, but something goes wrong, and Billy is forced to leave Hopper behind.

Cue Billy emerging from a Gate in the Byers' new town, breaking down knocking on their door, and telling them Hopper's alive.

The writers have a lot of room to maneuver here. And obviously, I can't anticipate every single thing they're going to do. However, this theory captures the gist of what I think will happen.

Explaining how I came to the theory will take some doing. In the meantime, you can read a truncated explanation here (in response to the question, "Hey, what's the deal with Billy's 'clone' in the Upside Down?").

Hold onto yer butts, it's gonna be a wild ride.

The "Billy Is Alive" Meta Series

terrible thought but it would be so sad if we got scene in the final season of joyce and jonathan talking (like i know the actors want) where joyce acknowledges that he's put his whole life on hold for his family and she reassures them that they'll be ok and finally pushes him to pursue his dreams and start really living his life. only for him to die in the finale. a situation like that is the only way i can see them killing jonathan off bc it could be a way to garner audience sympathy and remind them of the characterization jonathan had in season 1 (the peak of his popularity) and therefore get an actual audience reaction. but i hope he doesn't die + i feel like it would be impossible to kill off any of the byers-hopper fam without completely devastating all of them and making it impossible for any of them to have a truly happy ending (which they all deserve)

Ugh yeah that would be awful. No I mean I guess a plus on the ‘Jonathan will not be killed off side’ is they probably wouldn’t want to make the audience reinvest in him, and it’s unclear if we’re likely to get a scene of Jonathan and Joyce. I think the concern was more they would try to kill him off and gloss over it, because they already have glossed over him for multiple seasons—like it would be finding a way to kill a main and not show it have a lot of consequences.

Btw my actual ideal s5 would include him really having big convo with Joyce or even a couple of convos (full circle s1), raising his trust issues, that he gets some reassurance, and the Byers-Hopper family is happy at the end of s5, and Jonathan does go on to pursue his future plans with photography in the epilogue, wherever that is.

oh man where mike’s an escaped experiment and el is the one who finds her? that’s really interesting and there’s a lot of ways to do it but i like my own madwheelclair/jopper spin on it where el is hopper’s adopted daughter, maybe from an abusive family, and joyce and hopper have their unspoken Thing and so she’s close to the byers fam when will goes missing

and so that’s why she starts investigating and ropes lucas and dustin in with her. lucas is still very, very suspicious of the newcomer bc while he isn’t as jealous as he would be of el, he’s still really worried about will and worried by this new guy with superpowers. but on the other hand mike with powers would be 100% more likely to knock himself out being protective and is 100% less subtle too so the minute the gate comes up he’s just like “NO!!!!” and then wears himself out trying to keep them from going after it and so lucas is just like “dude come on pull yourself together, we have to find out friend” and mike’s like :((((((((((((((

also i feel like if mike isn’t literally her first foray into kindness she wouldn’t immediately interpret it as romance so maybe mike kisses her and she’s like “ummmmm” and he’s like “oh oops sorry i thought that was the thing we were doing here” and THEN they become brother and sister bc she and hopper set out to make sure he’s okay and hopper sets up the cabin for mike and el’s the only one who knows about it but is sworn to secrecy

and in this scenario lucas is the one who angsts about whether mike is okay or not, but he doesn’t realize he has Feelings, which is why he still falls for max. and also, the minute things start being weird, mike would break in an instant - he’s a lot more stubborn but less aggressive than el so i think he’d just straight up radio lucas after one (1) fight with hopper and so he finds out everything about will and all like midway through season 2 and doesn’t ever meet kali which is good bc he and kali would immediately kill each other. she just does her revenge thing in chicago, it’s cool

and then during all of season 3 it’s just an army of flayed people out to get mike while lucas tries to figure out if he likes max or mike more (trick question the answer is both)

well okay ! and in case you’ve decided to read this yet don’t know what this ask is about i came up w an idea to sort of rectify what i felt was an issue left mostly unresolved in season three of stranger things—the core four’s friendship—and it bothered me so i thought about how i would redo some bits of the season. k? k!

so let me begin w making it painfully obvious i love the show; this isn’t me tearing it a new one for the sake of doing so. i’m critiquing and offering commentary because i want it to be better. and i’m in no way saying my idea is perfect or polished, i’m just someone w a lot of time and a decent propensity for written thought.

my main issue w the resolution of the friendship tribulations between mike, lucas, dustin, and will is that there never really is one. we get that brief moment just before the starcourt battle where they reunite and share a hug but that’s about all, and it doesn’t address will’s concerns w his friends moving on without him—hell, he and mike never talk about their argument again—which was the main source of contention behind the arc. and to some degree, i understand: will said it himself, there were more important matters to attend to, and stopping all the literally life-threatening action to sing kumbaya would not only be dumb in-universe but would be out of place narratively. but it also wasn’t like it was a macguffin or just a one-off, throwaway line we weren’t really supposed to care about past that specific moment (see nancy and johnathan’s argument about classism v misogyny, though i would’ve loved to see that expanded upon further), will feeling left behind by his friends ran deep, so deep that he destroyed castle byers over it. so i said to myself, if i could rearrange the season, maybe add and take away a few things here and there, what would i do? how would i resolve that story line?

so the main thing i latched onto was castle byers. lucas and mike discovered will in the middle of the night, frenzied and having literally taken a bat to the fort he built with his brother. and it’s never talked about again. lucas tries, yes, but will tells him not to worry about it, and that’s it. i dunno about you, but i’d certainly try to find a time to bring that back up, especially if my friend is moving away. so here’s where my rewrite begins !

first, the night of mike and will’s argument, mike doesn’t make that “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls” comment (as much as it pains me to cut it) because he doesn’t know why will’s upset, and he doesn’t know why will’s upset because will isn’t saying “can we play d&d now?” every three seconds. i feel like a major issue this season had in its writing was being too transparent about everything—i mean, the audience literally knew russian agents were trying to open another gate the entire time, we were just watching the characters figure it out for themselves. so in this version, i rectify a little of that by having will show us he’s tired of his friends being girl-crazy through his actions, his body language, maybe a snide remark here and there. will is annoyed but he doesn’t wanna rain on everyone’s parade, so he keeps his comments to himself, and neither mike nor lucas pick up on it bc they’re so focused on el and max. so when will finally does blow up, mike genuinely doesn’t know why. this also gives some more breathing room to the arc, allows for more conversations to be had between the boys about their feelings, and also allows for will’s upset to continue to grow.

which brings me to point two: will doesn’t break castle byers that night. instead, they have their fight, will goes home, and when mike and lucas come to his house, he just sits in his room, resolutely not opening the door. only when he gets the goosebumps on his neck does he run after them to tell them what’s going on. this, again, allows for more breathing room, because we know will’s upset, but because there’s now the supernatural threat to focus on, all those pent-up emotions are just gonna continue to fester because neither of his friends actually get it, and he hasn’t had a genuine moment of catharsis yet. so idk how else to restructure the season bc things happen pretty quickly from then on, but within the next episode or two will breaks castle byers. hell, it can be that episode so long as it’s clear in the show that it’s not within the same 24 hours. i just think it’s important to show that the argument did nothing for will, he’s still #going #thru #it, so when we see him take a bat to castle byers it affects both us and him that much more deeply. and most most importantly, no one knows he did it.

we finally come to the finale, where everyone’s helping the byers fam pack (i’m also making the executive decision that it takes at LEAST three days and not just one like johnathan said, it’s unrealistic to pack a whole house in a day). it’s day two of three, and at some point will sneaks away to castle byers because he’s got enough emotional intelligence to know he regrets what he did and he does want a few of the things left in there. he picks through the wreckage and i imagine a really heartbreaking scene; where before he just had an outburst and broke everything, now he actually goes through things with affection, and you can tell it’s really hitting him that he’s moving. then we hear crunching, and the camera focuses on mike’s shocked and concerned face. (and this is where it’s gonna get real fan fic, but it’s the only way i can think to relay my ~vision~) (also none of this would have to be verbatim)

mike: um... [will doesn’t turn around] i know you told us to do what we wanted but there were a few things we didn’t-

will: just ask johnathan.

mike: we did. he said to find you

will, annoyed: i’ll be back in a minute, just, go help el or something

mike: ….did the storm do that?

will: what do you think, mike?

mike, walking closer: why would you do that? when did you do that?

will: just leave it-

mike: you built that. it’s been here forever. it was supposed to be here... after you were gone.

will: well maybe i don’t want any evidence that i was here.

mike, hurt: what?

will: just face it, mike. you’re different, lucas and dustin are different-

mike: that’s not true!

will, getting choked up: -and when i move tomorrow, you guys are probably gonna be going on, like, group dates with el via radio, or-or come up with some grand scheme to visit dustin’s girlfriend in utah! and it won’t matter that i’m not there!

mike: how could you say that? of course it’s going to matter. you’re part of the party, always and forever.

will: well the party didn’t seem to matter much to you this summer. not any of you. not unless it was life-threatening.

mike: will-

will: can you just leave me alone? i need to go through all of this to see what i can save

so mike hovers for a bit, not knowing what to say, before it’s clear will is done with the conversation and he trudges back to the house. we get a brief montage of will crying as he goes through the rubble, more to show the passage of time than anything else, some really sad synth music is probably playing. then we hear crunching in the leaves, and will assumes its mike and tells him to go, but we get a shot of mike kneeling down beside will, and we see in one hand he has a hammer and a box of nails, and a toolbox in the other, and after he holds the hammer and nails out to will, we get a shot of his face and we can tell he’s been crying, too. and will says, “i leave tomorrow”, to which mike simply replies, “it still matters”, and will takes the tools and the two boys get to work. not long after that do dustin and lucas come to the ruins, too, their own faces tear-stained, and without words they fall into rhythm with will and mike. all four boys’ final shared act together is literally and figuratively repairing their friendship.

eventually it starts getting dark and joyce comes out to get them, a teary smile on her own face, and the boys put on their finishing touches before painfully tearing themselves away, arms across each other’s shoulders and waists. will breaks away briefly, proclaiming that he forgot something, and we see him get the “all friends welcome” sign to (barely) stand up, and everyone smiles again before continuing their trek to the house.

now just think about having to watch that, you’re probably already crying, and then getting to the bit where el’s reading hopper’s note. WHEW. but honestly, this not only rectifies an arc that was basically left hanging, but it also provides great character moments, adds context and closure to castle byers, and gives us a fun scene of our main party members being kids one last time.

i love hearing what you have to say about season 4!! i promise it’s not too long lol, anyway i have a question for you: what do you think the next season holds for mike & el? i’m a little worried tbh

ahhh thank you !! same rules apply: spoilers ahead, so please read no further and blacklist/filter out the ‘s4′, ‘st4′, ‘spoilers’ tags if you don’t want to see anything !! 

i’m going to talk about them both as individuals and as a pair but first, i have to say that i don’t personally feel like you have to worry about them breaking up or anything again this season. i think s4 is really going to establish romantic jopper and once that happens, i don’t see them, mileven, or jancy not being endgame unless someone actually dies. which -- i’m not going to think about the possibility of anyone dying until i’m forced to confront it, so. this is fiction and it’s already unrealistic and i’m gonna take my ‘everyone survives, happiness all around, time to relax’ endings and go. anyway, i would love to add lumax to this list but i honestly think it could go either way depending on what happens in s4. that’s a different essay, though.

i tend to think that the most important dynamic on the show is the one between the whole group and i just don’t really see them spending much more time trying to develop romantic relationships outside of the ones set up since s1/2. maybe steve, robin, and will get love interests, maybe they decide to develop dustin and suzie more, maybe suzie is never even mentioned again, idk. but these will probably all be secondary -- as in less screen time, not less important than the main romances, but probably still less developed. unless it happens to be a new person added to the main cast. which, as of now, the only new mains are brett and priah who has gone from recurring to regular. so.  

i think s3 showed how messy and complicated romantic relationships (or, really just relationships in general) can be. everyone was arguing, there was miscommunication all around, everyone thought they knew what was best, no one was seeing eye to eye. but when it comes down to it, they would do anything for each other. they understand each other better than anyone else ever could. i can’t see them spending another season on breakups and romance drama after the ending of s3.  

mike and el have already been separated once before. this time, mike knows for sure that she’s alive and that’s she’s with the byers. this time, el won’t be kept completely isolated away from everyone else. they’ve made plans to meet for the holidays. they can still call and talk to each other as much as they want. i’m hoping they handle being separated this time better than they did in s2. i don’t want mike to be moping and i don’t want el to spend a lot of the season thinking about how much she misses him. in fact, i think in their case that some distance could be good for them. the same for jancy and jopper, too, honestly. it’ll be nice to see them existing outside of these relationships while still acknowledging how important they are.   

as far as i know, the byers and el stuff has not started filming yet so all there is to speculate on are rumors, the audition tapes, and logical guesses about where the story goes after s3. el obviously moves away with the byers. we still don’t know where. she’ll still be mourning hopper and trying to figure out life without her powers. and, of course, she’ll be in a long distance relationship with mike. i think she’ll be having a hard time and she’ll wish that mike was around, but she’ll realize she’s got a pretty good support system around her now with the byers, too. i’m very, very excited for more joyce and el content particularly, but there’s gotta be some great scenes with her and will and jonathan as well. 

there’s only one audition tape that i can confidently tie into the byers + el plot(s?) and it’s the queen bee/mean girl character ‘angela’. if we’re running with the whole ‘there may be some truth to the audition vids’ thing, then this one teases that el will be going to school and that angela will be bullying her. this is something she would probably want to talk about with mike (b i g troy s1 vibes) but i don’t know if she actually would ? so this is probably more a thing that el and will could bond over or that she could talk about with joyce or maybe jonathan. i do think there will be at least a few calls between the two of them before the action really hits and the whole group is (hopefully...) reunited.

so, el -- at least in the beginning of s4 -- will be going to school where ‘angela’ bullies her, forming a bond with joyce + will + jonathan and becoming part of the family, mourning hopper (+ hopefully having conversations about him + his past with joyce), missing her friends back in hawkins, continuing to learn how to navigate life without her powers, and trying to maintain a long distance relationship with mike. 

mike... i’ve been seeing some wild theories about him today but they aren’t really that far-fetched i think. first, going back to the audition tapes, the ‘eddie’ audition i saw makes it seem like mike is going to be part of the hellfire club with dustin. i’ve recently learned that there’s another version of the scene where ‘eddie’ is only talking to dustin and mike might not be a part of the club after all. if he isn’t part of the club, then the basketball v. hellfire, jocks v. nerds thing turns into lucas v. dustin and mike’s probably there just caught in the middle while max is off distancing herself from everyone.

at this point, i really want mike and max to become good friends. i think the end of s3 gave them the perfect opportunity. s4 max has s2 mike vibes. it’s not the same situation at all, but he knows kinda what she’s feeling and they could connect through that + the fact that they’ll both be missing el. i also just really want... some wheeler siblings content. i’m hopeful that s4 gives us good nancy and mike scenes bc there’s no reason not to give us good nancy and mike scenes (+holly!). however...

while there’s proof that gaten and sadie and natalia and priah have all been filming since production restarted, and while i have reason to believe that caleb has been filming a lot inside/at the studio recently... there’s no evidence that finn has been on set. there’s none for maya and joe, either, but people have said that finn isn’t even in atlanta right now. maybe he is and maybe he just hasn’t been seen and maybe he’ll pop back up tomorrow. or, maybe he already filmed whatever he needed to film for hawkins before production stopped.  

the wild theory that’s popped up today is that everything gets to be too much for him in hawkins and he just... hops on a train to go visit el + the byers. i don’t know if i buy it, but it is interesting to note that he was sitting with them at the table read. and since we can guess that steve and robin will still be working at the video store, robin and nancy will be investigating pennhurst together, lucas and max may have some angst, joyce and murray are probably teaming up for the finding/saving hopper plot, and el is going to bond with will and jonathan, it seems like the order might mean a little something. i’d even bet that dustin and erica have scenes with them bonding over d&d.    

now this theory pretty much only exists because no one’s seen finn on set and one of the paps posted some pics of some trains. there’s also always theories about how there will be issues at home with the wheeler fam and if that’s going to happen, what better time than in s4 when all of his friends are pulling away and el’s gone again. so if he is missing el (and will) that much, and if he has any reason to worry about her and how she’s doing, or if the party becoming distant and issues at home are weighing on him and he feels like he needs to get away, he’s absolutely the type to venture off on a train by himself. i don’t know how it would work since he’s definitely supposed to still be in school and his friends/nancy at least would notice he’s gone, but.. it’s fun to think about and we’ve got zero actual content to go off of right now.  

another way i could see mike’s plot going is that he’s the one trying to keep the party together this season. playing mediator with lucas and dustin, becoming better friends with max, being the connection between the hawkins plot and the byers plot (along with nancy). 

there was also talk of him joining the track team bc the track has been set up with hawkins high colors for filming. but mike ‘this isn’t a stupid sports game’ wheeler? i don’t think so... basically, no one knows at the moment what’s happening with mike wheeler in s4 lol.

s4 mike is just like s4 byers fam -- a complete mystery to me currently. i don’t personally think that he’ll be leaving school and hopping on a train to visit el. i think he’ll be a part of the hellfire club with dustin, or that he won’t and instead will be attempting to keep the party from completely disbanding. i hope that we get wheeler siblings scenes and that max and mike have a breakthrough and become better friends. i also feel like he’ll be having some complicated feelings about hopper, the last interaction they had, etc. and, again, the whole long distance thing with el. 

so... mike and el broke up in s3. it was messy. but then they reconciled. and then hopper “died”. s3 ended with them at this weird place where she’s heard him say that he loves her and she’s told him that she loves him back. things are a little awkward in the scene bc everything has changed at this point, but a kiss, an ‘i love you’, planning to meet up on the holidays, and promising to call frequently all sounds like they’re back together and going to try making the long distance thing work to me. 

i think they’ll be together when s4 starts. i think that we’ll probably only see them talking on the phone or their radios for the first few eps. maybe we’ll see flashbacks or something to them being together on the holidays. the distance might be hard and they’re definitely going to be missing each other. like... el doesn’t have mike or hopper with her now and i’m thinking the party is going to be drifting apart, plus they’re both probably going to have other personal issues that have nothing to do with each other or the party. maybe they’ll be experiencing some emotional distancing of their own while dealing with the aftermath of hopper’s “death”, the move, and whatever’s going on with them at home and at school. i think that once they reunite (probably not until the last half of the season), they’re likely to be stronger than ever. 

now, onto personal theories that have zero basis. for some reason, i can’t get it out of my head that this season might dive into psychological horror a little bit ? like a greatest fears type of thing ?? and i keep thinking about brenner popping back up and using the people el loves to get to her or something and 👀👀

What the HELL happened to the Byers? They went from being the emotional heart of the show to literally having one brief scene together in ep1 and then Will and Joyce had a hug by the end of ep8, which btw Jonathan DIDN’T EVEN JOIN IN ON??? He was literally in the background in that scene, are you trying to tell me my boy Jonathan Byers would not come out to hug his family after all that shit they just went through???? Jonathan and Will spent like what, four episodes standing next to each other and they barely even exchanged a single line?? Not a comforting touch, a hug, anything??

The Byers’ financial situation and how that could’ve given them some interaction, weight to Joyce’s desire to move and also the Byers talking about that AT ALL was lying right there for the taking. Joyce and Jonathan both had obvious concerns about losing their jobs

Joyce got to spend time doing something else than worrying about Will this season which was nice (instead running after manchild Hopper, great), but where are the repercussions of that? With the growing up theme I was hoping for Joyce to start to look into herself, about letting go and who she is when she’s not a mom

Jonathan was once again reduced to being Nancy’s sidekick, spending most of his time following her around and standing next to her while she drove the plot forward with a vengeance. He spent most of his time in the beginning being an abrasive grump and his pov was barely there with the lack of Byers fam content, which made his argument seem as weak as it did in s2. His scenes with Nancy hit the ground running, were rushed and few and far between. As soon as Jonathan was not by Nancy’s side he disappeared entirely from the plot until she called on him again. He didn’t have one single scene without her

Nancy Wheeler would never, ever stoop so low as to mock Jonathan for a) his socioeconomic position and b) his trauma with his dad. A super ooc low blow. Nancy can obviously be ignorant about how economical strife affects others, but actively mocking him??? This is not the Nancy that approached Jonathan “the freak” in s1 and expressed her concerns despite the entire school side-eyeing her. At least Jonathan got to sass back at her later

Where was Nancy’s backstory that was hinted at before the season? Was hoping for her to get some development OUTSIDE of her rallying to save the world 24/7

Will starts out the season having a semblance of an interesting, very relatable arc (abandonment issues, afraid of growing up, done with The Straights) that then goes nowhere in lieu of The Plot and Will just... doesn’t have a lot of beef with the MF. This thing and the other monsters of the UD fucked him for life, let him have something badass to do like I dunno, give him powers you cowards, let him fight the MF you cowards

Also let Will talk to his family about his issues, or have it be a point that Jonathan is now busy with Nancy and how he misses him. Jonathan being somewhat conflicted about spending all this time outside his family and the potential guilt and effect that has on him. Will destroyed Castle Byers that he and Jonathan built together, where the hell were my brotherly feels???

There was a lot of talk about “new pairings” with the characters, but everything felt very same-y. Jopper goes off on their own, jancy does the same thing, El and Mike have a ton of screentime devoted to just them, Steve and Dustin amped up their bromance to eleven, etc. Even when characters that usually aren’t grouped together were in the same scenes, they barely got anything to say or do (Lucas being said to “become closer with Jancy” was a flat out lie or referred to literally physically standing next to them). Where was Nancy and Joyce solidarity, El and Will siblings, Mike and Nancy bonding over their family falling apart, Jonathan and literally anyone but Nancy?

Villain focus completely shifted from the US government to the spoopy, evil Russians with their spoopy language. Stereotypical, tacky and bland af. Being American is Great and in no way problematic! Go patriotism/capitalism!

The abundance of action and cgi. Omg all of the action sequences. It felt like 70% of the season was spent on El throwing shit around with her powers and Hopper fighting Russian dudes. I remember being halfway through the season and thinking they really should’ve slowed down the plot. But that’s an issue with too little time for too many characters. I had no time to bond with any of the characters I liked since the plots were So Big and So Many that they ate up every opportunity for emotional intimacy and reflection. We had time for a goddamn ad for coke but not for the Byers to interact like once???

Also the whole infection/MF working in the shadows thing? Completely wasted potential. It was set up to induce paranoia in the characters and the MF tricking, playing with and torturing them, people not knowing who to trust which could’ve lead to some really compelling scenes. Nope, it’s just a big meaty version of the MF and now it’s running around town trying to fuck El up while nobody conveniently notices and tons of people died but who cares

Robin was shoehorned into the plot and magically had all the skills it took to figure out the code, could decipher Russian with no previous knowledge (the languages she listed as knowing are not at all related to Russian and why tf does she know so many languages??). At least she slapped Stobin in the face and gave us some actual LGBT rep since the doofuses are hellbent on beating around the bush with Will infinitely

Erica was 100% SASS and nothing else. It got old really quick

The entire plotline with Steve/Dustin/Erica/Robin took up about 60% of screentime with memes and sassy jokes and provided about 5% of relevance in the grand scheme of the plot. Everything they found out in the Russian facility could’ve been relayed by the Russian guy Jopper kidnapped

Which btw, why did a random Russian dude take up that much screentime? He had way more emotional development than 80% of the core cast. Also did we need that much Murray?

Speaking of, I did not need Murray doing his creepy, invasive psycho analysis thing on Jopper like he did Jancy last season. It was terrible and lazy writing then and it’s terrible and lazy now

Steve complaining about popularity “not being that great really” made me want to punch him in the face even more than usual. Nobody gives two shits about a rich white boy who got everything he pointed at, all the popularity and more girls than he could count at school while stomping on the outcasts

Also didn’t need that jab at Nancy in his heartfelt scene with Robin (which was funny bc Robin has a lot of similar traits to Nancy)

Karen and Billy was gross, but at least Karen stopped herself to go back to her unfulfilling but legally sound marriage. No need to rock that boat unnecessarily! A completely mediocre man is just fine for her I guess. At least she got a kickass scene with Nancy

Why in the fucking world did Billy get as much screentime as he did. Why on earth did this asshat, racist abuser get some bs sob story about his awful childhood when we have 47 other, way more sympathetic and interesting characters that could’ve been explored instead. And then he did some stupid “grand heroic sacrifice”. I cried more when the Russian dude died

Max was a victim of Billy’s abuse for years which was completely undermined by her ooc constant concern for him and overblown grief at his death

El being oh so concerned about Billy when she knew he was the asshole who had abused his friends Max and Lucas (and beat up Steve) before felt really insincere

Hopper was a huge, loud, violent jerk this season and I’m not having it. I felt sorry for Joyce having to put up with him and then he presumably died heroically (??? he’s obviously still alive guys) and I...didn’t really care? Was kind of on the Jopper train but have no hopes for it now. Where was their supposed “history” together that was hinted at before the season? It just felt like Hopper constantly acting like a huge, controlling manchild and Joyce having to pep/comfort/discipline him. No sense of back and forth support

What the fuck was that music number with Dustin and Suzie?? Omg cringe. I could feel how the characters all died inside

On the subject of music, they stole Jancy’s theme song and gave it to Steve and Robin and then Mileven. Mileven also stole Jancy’s “I love you”, which was clearly hinted from the name of the song on the soundtrack titled “The first I love you”, which is literally a rehash of their theme “The first lie” in s2. A huge slap in the face to end the season with
