PRISCILLA 2023: the press conference and incoming reviews
Tumblr media Tumblr media
today was my day off of work so naturally I stayed up until 5:15 am (pacific standard time thingz) to watch the press conference, and to read some of the incoming reviews for the film 😩
here are the most interesting notes from the press conference (it was extremely brief) and the reviews that I found the most interesting ⬇️
✭ the key moment in the press conference was most definitely Priscilla getting asked a question despite her not being on the panel but in the audience. She was asked how she felt about her life being represented on film and what touched her most about the movie… she gave the best answer of the conference imo
- she became emotional nearly right away and had to take a moment to wipe her tears for which she apologized
- at first she simply said “the ending”, referring to what touched her most about the film. Based on that, and another question, I’m assuming the film ends with Priscilla leaving Elvis
-there were a few questions which shed Elvis in a bad light and so Priscilla referenced one of the journalists and began defending Elvis: she said that her parents had no idea why Elvis was so drawn to her and wanted to be with her, but she states that she was someone that Elvis could completely pour his heart out into (she references the loss of Gladys, his fears, and his frustration with his career)
-As she says it, she was there to listen and to comfort him, she said that is what drew Elvis to her. She states she was mature for her age “older in life but not in numbers”. She also says that in the beginning of the relationship, when she was 14, the relationship was not about sex and that he always respected her
“People think, ‘Oh, it was sex.’ No, it wasn’t. I never had sex with him. He was very kind, very soft, very loving, but he also respected the fact I was only 14 years old”
-she talked about how she didn’t know why Elvis had put so much trust into her but she realized it was because she never gave him up. She never told anyone at school she was seeing him etc. etc
-to end her statement she says that Elvis was the love of her life, and that she didn’t leave him because she didn’t love him, she left because she couldn’t handle the lifestyle
some other key notes-
- the very first question by a journalist referenced physical and mental abuse that is shown in the film
-Jacob Elordi seriously surprised me (in the best way) with his very first answer: he was asked about Elvis telling Priscilla “maybe another time, maybe another place” and how he related to that. He first talked about how Priscilla’s book was the main source for him, and how he came to understand the scale of their love (between Elvis and Priscilla) and the power of it. He said it’s “true”, “undying”, and “it’s beautiful”. He finished by saying that Elvis and Priscilla will be tethered for eternity because of their love
(I honestly didn’t expect such an insightful answer from him lmaoo 🤧)
- Sofia talked about how it was really important for this film to only be the from the perspective of Priscilla, and she says that one of the reasons she loves film is because you can experience someone else’s story
- One journalist asked Sofia if she learned anything new about Elvis from talking with Priscilla and she says that Priscilla told her about how when they would go to movies together in Germany, Elvis would always mouth the words to film… that is how badly he wanted to be a serious actor
- Jacob was asked if he drew any inspiration from the 2022 “Elvis” and he said “no.”, and that Sofia helped him tackle his fears in portraying someone as big as Elvis
- When asked about why Jacob was casted as Elvis, Sofia said that she felt that he had the same charisma as Elvis but most importantly he could play the sensitive and vulnerable side to Elvis
There were a few other technical questions about the film’s palette and music but the press conference ended super quickly, it was a bit awkward to watch and the lead actress, Cailee Spaeny, was naturally very nervous 😭
Overall, reviews have been mixed. Some are saying it’s Coppola’s best work. Some are saying it lacks any depth. And many have had not good things to say about Elvis which makes me anxious for what kind of content is shown in the movie
Here are some of the newest reviews for the film, courtesy of letterboxd ⬇️:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“it avoids giving any sort of context to why Elvis was acting the way he was” is the most worrisome line out of all of these to me… elvis is quite possibly the most context needing person ever
it’s a lot to digest at once, what do y’all think about everything?

Are you sure?! Episode 6 - Sapporo
Lessons in how to start an episode right here.
Jikook being all sentimental.
This is not the first time they were in Sapporo. JM was talking about six or seven years ago, while this came to mind straight away:
Sapporo snow festival February 2016.
youtube
One of those probably memorable moments.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is such a young Jikook, this being one of the first louder JK moments at the time.
Tumblr media
I'm sure they created some beautiful memories there. None as beautiful as the ones they created in Tokyo though.
Tumblr media
That was theirs, and that is also why we don't get to share any of their Tokyo time in 2024. That is theirs and theirs alone. And yes, I know that JK was working part of their time in Tokyo, but see, if they weren't intending on spending time together, JM could easily have joined him a few days later. But he didn't.
Them sitting there on that sofa and talking about the show, btw, was filmed most likely at the end of their trip, just before leaving for the airport and home.
Tumblr media
This is them leaving Sapporo.
28 November 2023. Basically 2 weeks before they enlisted. Them sitting down, at the very end of their last trip before enlistment. Understandably emotions would be heightened. And that trademarked move of JK's...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moving on to their arrival in Sapporo.
Tumblr media
Ok, so as I mentioned in my Jeju posts, I saw a clear shift in JK in Jeju. Lighter. A weight lifted off his shoulders. He was the same here, even more so. But the one I wanted to talk about was JM. Because I felt like here, in Sapporo, is where we see that same shift in him. In CT he was sick but content to be with JK. In Jeju he was happy but still felt a little distant (not from JK but not allowing himself to fully let go), less touchy feely with JK, like he was holding back (with all of the shifty cheeky behaviour that was going on he still felt like he was holding back). But here, he's just all in. He's handsy and touchy feely, and talkative. So so talkative. I won't lie, I was a little shocked. In the best way possible. This was a side of JM we didn't get to see for such a long time. Free. Open. Some of the conversations they had, and some of the things JM talked about, never in 100 years would I have thought he would bring them up on his own accord and share his thoughts with us about them.
This one for example:
youtube
JM talking about this so openly. JK's reaction or lack thereof makes me feel like this wasn't the first time the subject came up with the two of them.
Not to say that I don't think that JK was taken aback by JM bringing it up there and then. His initial reaction was not stressed but maybe a little worried?
Tumblr media
But with saying that, imo this is not the first time he's heard this. And the maybe a little worry is not about the subject and more about the timing of the convo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Happiness.
That is what I see.
Even when having this conversation, which is not an easy one to have for the two of them.
Remember how the subject of being married with children came up during Festa 2020? Remember how the two stayed conspicuously silent on the matter?
And yet, JM brought it up there and then, openly, with a smile on his face, his hand not leaving JK's shoulder for one second during this whole convo.
All and all it was just so heartwarming to see them throughout the whole episode. Like I said, they just looked happy. To be there, together, with each other, making new memories to take with them for the next couple of years.
Back to them arriving in Hokkaido, can someone please explain to me why JK found the need to change that camera angle to show us JM's hand on him?
Tumblr media
JM well aware and letting go pretty much immediately.
Next we had them in the car/van/whatever it was. Doing this:
Tumblr media
Ok then, what to say here?
What indeed?
Truly, I'm seriously asking here, because I'm kind of at a loss for words, lol.
Just another one of those super sus super "nothing platonic going on here" moments.
Kind of like this one.
Tumblr media
But the eye squint, that smile, lip pucker and shoulder lift...
Tumblr media
This sequence:
Tumblr media
Really JK?
Can you be any more obvious?
🤣🤣
Just two dudes going on a dude vacay, right?
Tumblr media
And JK once again when hungry... looking for his food is he?
Tumblr media
Oh, and last but not least:
This is how 2 people enter a room when they are well aware of the camera in the room:
Tumblr media
And this is how 2 people are caught off guard by a candid camera placed in a room they weren't supposed to be entering together...
Tumblr media
Oopsy.
Well my friends, that is how you start off an episode. We have emotional, we have cheeky, we have sus as shit, we have happiness and fun, and we have an audience that is now glued to the screen screaming for more!!!

Summary: You’ve just started working at a local diner, where whispers swirl about the disappearance of the previous waitress. While some believe she simply grew weary of her ordinary life, the mystery surrounding her vanishing lingers. On your first day, a man with piercing blue eyes catches your eye. His name is Titus, and he was a frequent customer of the missing waitress.
Author's Note: This fanfic will romanticize abduction; please be aware of this. It may also include violence and inappropriate language. This fanfic features characters from the short film Regulars (2023).

ONE
You replay the night you spent with Titus over and over in your mind, unable to forget his kind smile or the way his presence had warmed an otherwise lonely evening. But he had vanished after that day, leaving you with nothing but questions. Christmas had come and gone, yet the diner still clung to the festive spirit, its decorations and endless loop of holiday songs a stark contrast to the unease that lingered in your chest. You couldn’t help but wonder what you might have done to drive away someone as gentle as Titus.
"Y/N, you're closing the diner tonight, right? We've got a New Year’s party to get to, and we don’t want to be late," one of your coworkers says, already halfway out of her uniform.
The two of them always seemed to take advantage of your willingness to pick up the slack. "I was the one who stayed late on Christmas," you reply, your tone calm despite the indignation simmering beneath the surface. "Am I expected to spend New Year’s here as well?"
"Look, we all know you don’t have any family around here," one of your coworkers says with a dismissive shrug, already slipping into her coat. "So you might as well stay until the end of the shift. Simple as that. And don’t get upset just because that weird little customer hasn’t come back to see you."
The other coworker, fully dressed to leave, chimes in with a smirk, and you look at her, stunned by the sheer pettiness of her remark.
"His name is Titus, not 'weird little customer.' You're bitter, but don’t worry—go ahead and enjoy your party. I’ll close the diner," you reply coldly, glaring at her with disdain. Neither of them seems to care about your reaction; they’re simply thrilled to be off the hook.
As your coworkers leave without so much as a thank you, you continue tending to the few customers scattered around the diner. While delivering the orders for two tables, you hear the bell above the door chime. You glance up and freeze. There, standing in the entryway, is Titus. He’s dressed more formally this time, his shirt neatly pressed and held up by a pair of suspenders that lend him an old-fashioned charm. His gentle smile warms the room, but you meet it with a closed-off expression. You're torn, your emotions a mix of disappointment and self-preservation. Perhaps Titus was just a lonely customer who needed company that one night, and you happened to be there. You refuse to let yourself hope for more.
"Good evening, sir. Here is your menu. If you're ready to place your order, just call for me," you say as Titus takes a seat. You hand him the menu with practiced composure, doing your best to mask the effect his presence has on you.
"I thought we’d moved past such formalities," Titus murmurs, his tone soft but laced with a timid attempt at confidence.
"We can always be mistaken, sir," you reply, keeping your voice steady and neutral. "Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have another customer to attend to, but when you’re ready to order..." As you turn to leave, Titus gently takes your hand, his touch firm enough to stop you but still careful, almost hesitant. It’s enough to make you pause, your breath catching as you glance back at him. For a brief moment, his gaze holds yours, and the air feels heavier with unspoken words.
"May I explain the reason for my disappearance? Just give me a chance," Titus says softly, his eyes holding a pleading, almost puppy-like quality that leaves you momentarily flustered.
"At the end of the shift, you may explain whatever you wish, sir," you reply coldly, pulling your hand from his grasp with measured restraint.
For the rest of the evening, Titus remains at the diner, his presence as steady as the hum of the Christmas music playing in the background. Between attending to other customers and refilling his two cups of tea—which he ordered throughout the night—you find your gazes meeting far more often than you’d like. Each glance feels like an unspoken invitation, as if both of you were silently longing to bridge the space between you. You try to maintain your resolve, reminding yourself to keep your distance. Yet, the gentle warmth in his eyes chips away at your defenses, leaving you to wonder if opening your heart to him might not be as foolish as you fear.
"The shift is over," Titus says, his tone betraying how eagerly he'd been counting down to this moment alone with you.
"Very well, you may explain yourself while I finish closing the register. Not that you owe me an explanation," you reply, keeping your hands busy tidying up the diner to avoid meeting his gaze directly.
"The last time I was here, I mentioned having lost someone I loved," Titus begins, his voice quiet and uncertain, as if the words themselves might falter. "Speaking so openly with you made me reflect deeply on that loss—on whether I was ready to allow myself to feel vulnerable again, to open myself up the way I had before. Vulnerability is... delicate. I let my insecurities take hold and pull me away."
His voice wavers slightly, and this time, instead of the fidget toy he had used as a shield before, he clings to the cuff of his dress shirt, as though the fabric itself might offer him some semblance of steadiness. Each pause, each moment of hesitation, feels heavy with sincerity, and despite yourself, you find your resolve beginning to waver.
"Honestly, I was only upset because I couldn’t figure out what had gone wrong. But I must assure you, it was never my intention to pressure you," you say, guilt tugging at you for having misjudged him. As a gesture of reconciliation, you take the seat across from Titus, signaling that you’re ready to listen and let the tension dissolve.
"Nothing went wrong," Titus replies softly, his eyes holding yours with a quiet intensity. "In fact, you were one of the very few people I’ve ever felt so comfortable talking to." His hands fidget briefly before stilling, as though he’s resisting the urge to reach out—either to take your hand or to pull you closer. The sincerity in his voice lingers, filling the small space between you, making it impossible not to feel the weight of his words.
"Perhaps it would be easier if we simply see this for what it is—you as my customer, and I as your waitress," you say with an understanding smile, your tone gentle as you meet Titus's gaze.
He presses his lips together, his expression pensive, as though carefully weighing his words. "I’d like to think I’m more than just your customer," he finally says, his voice carrying a hint of vulnerability.
As he nervously fidgets with the teacup in front of him, you instinctively reach out, placing your hand over his. His skin is cold to the touch, but the small gesture seems to ease the tension in his frame. His fingers still beneath yours, and for a moment, the world outside the quiet diner fades away.
"This is my favorite Christmas song," you murmur, your voice light as you try to shift the mood, noticing the faint blush that blooms on Titus's cheeks after you touched his hand.
As if summoned by a surge of bravery, he stands, his chair scraping softly against the floor. He extends his hand toward you, his expression both nervous and determined. "May I?" he asks, his voice steady yet gentle, the unspoken promise in his words clear. It’s an invitation, not just to dance but to share a moment of quiet magic amidst the humdrum of your workplace. The soft melody of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" swirls around you, creating a bubble of warmth and possibility, as if the world outside no longer matters.
"I’m honored," you say, taking his hand and stepping into the slow rhythm of the dance. Your movements are unhurried, and as the sway of the music draws you closer, your head naturally rests near Titus’s shoulder. He leans in, his face near yours as if breathing you in. What might have felt odd under different circumstances now seems profoundly intimate, a gesture so unspoken yet deeply meaningful.
At one point, he gently spins you, and when you return, colliding softly into his frame, you find yourselves face to face. His warm breath brushes against your skin, carrying the faint, comforting scent of vanilla. Before you can fully register the moment, he leans forward and places a soft, fleeting kiss on your lips—a delicate graze that leaves you stunned. But rather than pulling away, you cup his face in your hands, holding him close as you press your lips to his in return. This time, the kiss is fuller, imbued with tenderness and a stirring intensity, as if speaking the words neither of you dared to say aloud.
When your lips part, Titus exhales as though a weight has been lifted from his chest. "Will you go out with me tomorrow?" he asks, his body still close to yours, his voice soft but steady.
"Like a date?" you reply, a hopeful lilt in your tone as the possibility of something real between you begins to take shape.
"Yes, a date," Titus confirms, though his words are quiet, almost hesitant, as though unsure if he should suggest what comes next. "I could cook for you... at my place."
"It sounds perfect," you answer warmly, your smile breaking through any lingering nerves in his demeanor. Leaning in, you press a gentle kiss to his cheek. He closes his eyes, a peaceful expression washing over him as though your acceptance is everything he dared to hope for and more.

EWAN MITCHELL IN CONVERSATION WITH EMMA D'ARCY FOR HERO MAGAZINE.
EMMA D'ARCY: — WHERE ARE YOU? ARE YOU IN AMERICA?
EWAN MITCHELL: NO, BUT I WAS SHOOT IN NEW YORK. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN?
ED: YEAH, I DID THE CRUCIBLE THERE [AT THE YARD THEATRE IN 2019] AND WE GOT A GREYHOUND TO SALEM, THEY'RE REALLY INTO THE OCCULT THERE. — WHAT ARE YOU UP TO AT THE MOMENT?
EM: I'M SUFFERING SEVERE JET LAG FROM NEW YORK, BUT I LOVED IT. I LIKE THE AMBIENCE, THE PEOPLE, THE FOOD. I LOVE HOW EVERYONE SAYS, 'I GOT YA.' — WHAT ABOUT YOU?
ED: I'VE JUST DONE A WEEK OF REHEARSALS BUT I'VE HAD A NICE BIT OF TIME NOT DOING ANYTHING PRIOR TO THAT.
EM: THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM.
ED: I'D BE QUITE HAPPY TO DO NOTHING FOR A REALLY LONG TIME. I FIND IT INCREDIBLY INTERESTING TO DO ALMOST NOTHING AT ALL. I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH OF A PROBLEM THAT'S GOING TO BE FOR MY CAREER GOING FORWARD, BUT IT'S BEEN NICE. [LAUGHS]
EM: I HAVE TO STAY BUSY WHEN I'M NOT WORKING.
ED: YEAH BUT YOU'RE YOUNG, I'VE CROSSED THE BOUNDARY INTO A DIFFERENT TYPE OF LIFE.
EM: NO WAY.
ED: I DON'T MEAN IT IN A BAD WAT EITHER, IT'S ACTUALLY SO CRAZY. FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER I'M QUESTIONING, 'WHAT DO I WANT MY LIFE TO LOOK LIKE?' IT'S NOT A QUESTION I HAD EVER ASKED BEFORE — IT'S COOL. I THINK MAYBE IT COMES WITH A REALISATION THAT THIS IS IN FACT YOUR LIFE.
EM: OH WOW, WHAT AGE WILL IT HIT ME?
ED: HOW OLD ARE YOU?
EM: I'M 26.
ED: YOU'VE PROBABLY GOT FOUR OR FIVE YEARS. [LAUGHS]
EM: WHEN I'M NOT WORKING I DO HAVE TO KEEP BUSY. I DON'T KNOW HOW IT IS FOR YOU, BUT I HAVE TO ADOPT A KIND OF SLEEPER AGENT LIFESTYLE, I HAVE CREATE A ROUTINE. I BOX EVERY OTHER DAY AND KEEP MY MIND BUSY. I THINK MY MATES KNOW I COME WITH A DISCLAIMER THAT IF ANYTHING COMES UP, THEN I'M DROPPING EVERYTHING FOR WORK — I JUST LOVE IT.
ED: WHAT YOU DESCRIBE IS A STATE OF PERPETUALLY LEAVING.
EM: EVERYTHING I DO ALWAYS RELATES TO ACTING WEIRDLY, IT HAS TO INFORM MY PROCESS IN SOME WAY, SHAPE OR FORM AND IF IT DOESN'T, IT SWITCHES ME OFF.
ED: — WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS?
EM: I NEVER WENT TO DRAMA SCHOOL SO EVERY JOB I DO IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO HONE IT AND TRY NEW THINGS.
BRUCE LEE SAID, 'ABSORB WHAT IS USEFUL AND DISCARD WHAT IS NOT,' HE WOULD CHERRY-PICK FROM DIFFERENT COMBAT DISCIPLINES AND IN DOING SO FORMED HIS OWN MARTIAL ART.
SIMILAR TO ME, I'M TRYING IT ON THE FLY AND SEEING WHAT STICKS, WHAT DOESN'T, MIXING IT UP FOR DIFFERENT CHARACTERS. AND SO FAR, SO GOOD. — WHAT ABOUT YOU?
ED: I ALSO DIDN'T GO TO DRAMA SCHOOL AND STRUGGLE WHEN DIRECTORS VERY KINDLY ASK, 'HOW CAN I BEST SUPPORT YOUR PROCESS?' I DON'T FEEL PARTICULARLY CLEAR ABOUT WHAT THAT MEANS.
EM: — SO YOU'RE QUITE INSTINCTUAL?
ED: I THINK I'M PART COMPLETELY PRE-MEDITATED AND PART NOT.
I WOULD SAY THAT I HAVE A CONFIDENCE PROBLEM SO I DO A LOT OF PREPARATION, BUT FOR ME PREPARATION IS CONFIDENCE, WHICH ALLOWS ME TO LET GO OF THE PREPARATION ON THE DAY.
WHEREAS, IF I WERE TO COME IN EMPTY-HANDED, MY CONFIDENCE PROBLEM WOULD FLARE UP.
EM: I HAVE TO CONGRATULATE YOU ON YOUR SHORT FILM 'THE TALENT' [EMMA CO-PRODUCED AND STARRED IN THE 2023 BIFA-NOMINATED SHORT], I LOVED IT.
ED: THANK YOU, IT WAS A JOY.
EM: WAS THAT THE FIRST THING YOU'VE PRODUCED?
ED: YEAH, I CO-PRODUCED IT. I WOULDN'T HAVE MANAGED IT ON MY OWN.
EM: I'D LOVE TO DO THAT ONE DAY, IT'S SO COOL.
ED: I'VE LOVED GOING TO FILM FESTIVALS WITH IT BECAUSE IT'S NOT SOMETHING I'D DONE BEFORE, IT'S SUCH A NICE PROCESS. — WOULD YOU LIKE TO DIRECT?
EM: I DON'T KNOW, MAYBE NOT YET. I STILL FEEL LIKE I WANT TO ACT. I LOOK AT WHAT MARGOT ROBBIE HAS DONE WITH LUCKYCHAP [ENTERTAINMENT, ROBBIE'S PRODUCTION COMPANY] AND HOW SHE'S PRODUCED FILMS SHE'S REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT, FILMS YOU THINK CAN CHANGE THE INDUSTRY IN SOME WAY. I'D LOVE TO DO THAT. GROWING UP, THERE WERE THE FILMS I REALLY ENJOYED, NOT THE NORMAL LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT ONES, BUT THAT EXPANDED MY UNDERSTANDING AND CHALLENGED ME. THOSE FILMS ARE THE ONES I WANT TO BE A PART OF IN SOME WAY, SHAPE OR FORM. IF NOT ACTING, I GUESS IT WOULD PRODUCING. — HOW LONG WAS THE PROCESS FROM START TO FINISH?
ED: PROBABLY AROUND A YEAR FROM THE SCRIPT NOT EXISTING, BUT IN A MORE STRUCTURED WAY, MAYBE A PRE-PRODUCTION OF FIVE MONTHS. I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHY I ASKED YOU IF YOU WANTED TO DIRECT BECAUSE EVERYONE ALWAYS SAYS THAT AND I FEEL LIKE INHERENT IN THE QUESTION IS THAT CULTURALLY, WE PRIVILEGE THE IDEA OF THE PRIMARY ARTIST. IF YOU'RE AN INTERPRETATIVE SECONDARY ARTIST, WE DON'T CREDIT THAT IN QUITE THE SAME WAY, BUT I DON'T AGREE WITH THAT VIEW. I DON'T WANT TO DIRECT BUT REALLY LIKE PRODUCING AND FEEL VERY CONFIDENT IN MY SECONDARY ARTIST STATUS.
EM: I FEEL LIKE THAT WITH BOXING, IF I EVER WENT INTO AMATEUR THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER HUNGRY UP-AND-COMING BOXERS AND IT'S JUST NOT MY GAME, I'M NOT AS INSPIRED BY THAT AS I AM BY ACTING. I DON'T WANT TO BREAK MY NOSE AND GET KNOCKED OUT.
ED: IF YOU'RE BOXING A LOT, HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT YOUR NOSE DOESN'T GET BROKEN?
EM: WE KEEP IT LIGHT AND IT'S USUALLY JUST PADS, IF I HAVE TO WEAR A HEAD GUARD I WILL DO, BUT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ARE IN PLACE. [LAUGHS] — DO YOU BOX?
ED: I DON'T, BUT A FRIEND OF MINE TOOK PART IN A QUEER CHARITY BOXING EVENT AND I WAS SURPRISED BY HOW VISCERALLY TERRIBLE I FOUND IT TO WATCH THEM FIGHT.
EM: DID YOU NOT WANT TO GET IN THERE AND JOIN THEM?
ED: I SUDDENLY FELT SO WILDLY HELPLESS AND ALL I COULD DO WAS SCREAM FROM A PLACE OF WANTING TO PROTECT AND SUPPORT BUT ALSO FROM A PLACE OF FEAR. MY FRIEND DID BEAUTIFULLY AND THEY'RE AMAZING, BUT I'D NEVER BEEN IN THAT ENVIRONMENT BEFORE AND WHEN IT CAME TO IT I COULDN'T HANDLE IT. — HOW DID YOU GET INTO ACTING?
EM: I ALWAYS WANTED TO DO IT BUT I'M NOT TOO SURE WHERE IT CAME FROM. I HEARD ABOUT THE TELEVISION WORKSHOP IN NOTTINGHAM AND APPLIED THE FIRST YEAR BUT DIDN'T GET IN. FOR THE SECOND YEAR, I HAD THIS LITTLE NOTEBOOK THAT I WOULD JOT DOWN IN BECAUSE I KNEW THE STRUCTURE OF THE PROCESS OF THE AUDITION. I CAME UP WITH ALL OF THESE NEAT LITTLE QUIPS I COULD USE. I GOT IN THE SECOND TIME, THEN FROM THE WORKSHOP I DID A SHORT FILM CALLED 'FIRE' DIRECTED BY CHRIS ANDREWS. I GOT IT BURNT ONTO CDs AND I GOT ALL THE NAMES OF THE AGENCIES I KNEW OF IN LONDON. I WENT DOWN [TO LONDON] ON THE TRAIN AND POSTED THEM TO ALL OF THE AGENTS.
ED: SIDE NOTE, ARE YOU UNCONSCIOUS YET? I'D SAY I'M STILL SELF-CONSCIOUS IN INTERVIEWS.
EM: I ALWAYS WANT TO FLIP IT ON ITS HEAD AND ASK THE INTERVIEWER QUESTIONS, JUST BECAUSE OF THAT INNATE FEAR THAT IT MIGHT BORDER INTO THERAPY AND YOU MIGHT BE ROBIN WILLIAMS AND I'LL BE MATT DAMON SITTING ON A PARK BENCH IN BOSTON SOMEWHERE AND IT'S GOOD WILL HUNTING.
THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MYSTERY AS WELL, AND ONCE YOU LOSE THAT MYSTERY YOU CAN'T REALLY GET IT BACK. IF PEOPLE GET TO KNOW THE REAL ME, I DO BELIEVE IT'LL DETRACT FROM WHAT I'M TRYING TO DO AS AN ACTOR. I WANT YOU TO ESCAPE INTO MY CHARACTERS, I DON'T WANT YOU TO SEE EWAN. — HOW ARE YOU WITH INTERVIEWS? I'M SUPER GRATEFUL YOU'VE DONE THIS.
ED: I'VE GOT BETTER, I DON'T MEAN BETTER AS A QUALITY JUDGEMENT, BUT I HAVE BECOME MORE COMFORTABLE. I WAS VERY BAD AT THE BEGINNING, I HAD THIS 'GOOD SCHOOLBOY' WHO CAME OUT AND ACTUALLY, HE COMPLETELY WIPED MY PERSONALITY. HE FEELS THAT IT'S A TEST AND THERE IS A RIGHT ANSWER. I HAVE TO BANISH MY GOOD BOY OTHERWISE I AM VIOLENTLY DULL.
EM: AND THAT'S ME RIGHT NOW, RIGHT? [BOTH LAUGH]
ED: EWAN, GET ON THE CHAISE LONGUE, WE'RE GOING TO TALK. [BOTH LAUGH]
IT IS FRIGHTENING AT THE BEGINNING; I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU FEEL BUT I'M ONLY JUST AT A POINT NOW SINCE THE SHOW CAME OUT THAT I FEEL OK.
EM: REALLY? DID YOU NOT FEEL YOURSELF GETTING WARMED UP THE MORE YOU WERE DOING THAT MASSIVE PRESS RUN FOR SEASON ONE?
ED: NO. [LAUGHS]
I THINK MY GOOD BOY CAME OUT, BUT YOU CAN'T PREDICT THE PARAMETERS OF A CHANGE LIKE THAT IN YOUR LIFE UNTIL IT HAPPENS AND YOU'VE SAT IN IT FOR A WHILE. I FOUND IT QUITE FRIGHTENING [AT FIRST].
EM: YOU'RE WORKING WITH BEN WHISHAW AT THE MOMENT RIGHT?
ED: YEAH.
EM: I READ THAT WHEN HE'S OFF STAGE HE HAS THAT ANXIETY TOO, WATCHING HIS WORK YOU'D NEVER EVEN THINK OF IT. IN 'PASSAGES,' HE'S AMAZING AND EVEN IN THE SMALLER SUPPORTING CHARACTERS TOO.
HE JUST KILLS IT IN ANYTHING HE DOES. I FOUND IT INTERESTING BECAUSE YOU DON'T SEE [ANXIETY] IN HIS PERFORMANCES, WHICH IS INSPIRING.
I DID A COMIC CON IN BRAZIL AND IT WAS SUPER FUN BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I HAD TO BE SOMEONE ELSE. I HAD THIS LEATHER SUIT ON AND IT WAS SO EMPOWERING. I FELT UNSTOPPABLE AND IN THE END I ADOPTED THIS CONFIDENT CHARACTER.
I RECOGNISE I NEED TO BE MORE MYSELF IN THESE SITUATIONS, FOR SURE.
ED: I HONESTLY DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S TRUE, IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT TO GIVE AWAY.
EM: I HAVEN'T SEEN YOU AT ALL WHILE SHOOTING SEASON TWO.
ED: — HOW DID THIS SEASON FEEL?
EM: I LOVED IT. I LIKE THAT SEPARATION BETWEEN OUR TWO SIDES OF THE FAMILY BECAUSE WHEN WE DO MEET AGAIN IT'S GOING TO BE SEISMIC. THE FIRST SEASON IT WAS GREAT TO FINALLY SEE THAT CRESCENDO AND NOW SEASON TWO IS THE FALLOUT.
I REALLY CAN'T WAIT FOR YOUR PERFORMANCE, IT'S QUITE NICE NOT KNOWING WHAT'S GOING ON.
ED: I AGREE, AND IT'S NICE HAVING SO MUCH TO WATCH THAT YOU HAVEN'T SEEN. I HAVE A WHOLE HALF OF THE SHOW THAT I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. — DO YOU WATCH YOURSELF?
EM: I DO, IT TAKES A GOOD TWELVE OR THIRTEEN TIMES BEFORE I CAN APPRECIATE IT. I FIND IT REALLY DIFFICULT BUT I ALSO RECOGNISE THAT I WANT TO KNOW WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN'T. — DO YOU?
ED: YES, BUT QUITE MINIMALLY. — DO YOU WATCH PLAYBACK ON SET?
EM: — I CAN'T LOOK AT MYSELF, DO YOU?
ED: NO, BUT I GENUINELY THINK IT WOULD BE HELPFUL IF I COULD STOMACH IT. SO MUCH ON SCREEN IS SO TECHNICAL AND BECAUSE SO MANY FACTORS MEDIATE YOUR PERFORMANCE, IT'S REASONABLE THAT THINGS MIGHT NOT COMMUNICATE AS YOU'RE IMAGINING.
BUT THEN I DON'T KNOW WHETHER THAT WOULD BE A DEGREE OF CONTROL THAT IS JUST NOT REAL BECAUSE WE HAVE SO LITTLE CONTROL AND FUNDAMENTALLY THE NARRATIVE WILL BE IN THE EDIT.
EM: — WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING WITH MATT SMITH?
ED: IT'S GREAT, I LOVE HIM AN EXTRAORDINARY AMOUNT AND FEEL PRIVILEGED WHEN I GET TO WORK WITH HIM. IT'S SO NICE TO KNOW WHAT LIGHTS SOMEONE UP, HE'S SO REACTIVE AND HE RESPONDS BEAUTIFULLY TO NEWNESS, IT'S SUCH A DELIGHTFUL GAME.
EM: I REMEMBER THAT MOMENT IN SEASON ONE EPISODE EIGHT AROUND THE BANQUET TABKE AND AEMOND AND DAEMON HAVE A FACE-OFF, AND IN ONE OF THE TAKES MATT SPOKE IN A MURMUR BUT IT WAS HIGH VALYRIAN. I DID NOTICE THAT QUALITY IN THE LIMITED TIMES I WORKED WITH HIM. THERE IS SOMETHING SPICY ABOUT MIXING IT UP, KEEPING YOU ON YOUR TOES AND IN TURN, YOU PICK UP A FEW MOVES IN THE PROCESS.
ED: IT'S REALLY GOOD. THE GUY'S GOT GREAT TASTE AS WELL, SOMETIMES HE HAS LOVELY IDEAS ABOUT HOW A THING MIGHT PLAY BEST AND AT WHAT SIZE. I GET THE SENSE HE HAS A REALLY VIVID PICTURE IN HIS MIND'S EYE AND THAT'S SO HELPFUL BECAUSE IT REFERS TO THE TECHNICAL PART OF OUR JOB. IT'S A PRIVILEGE TO BE 'LOST IN THE CHARACTER' BUT THERE IS A SPECIFIC TECHNICAL PART OF HOW SOMETHING COMMUNICATES AND I THINK HE IS REALLY GOOD AT THAT.
EM: THAT'S SO INTERESTING. I DO TRY TO TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION WITH FRAME SIZES AND WHAT TO PLAY UP AND PLAY DOWN. IT'S ALL A BIG LEARNING CURVE, ISN'T IT?

Bengiyo's Queer Cinema Syllabus
For those of you who don’t know, I decided to run the gauntlet of @bengiyo’s queer cinema syllabus, which is comprised of 9 units. I have completed four of the units (here is my queer cinema syllabus round up post with all the films I’ve watched and written about so far). It is time for me to make my way through Unit 5- Lesbians, which includes the following films: The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love (1995), Bound (1996), Water Lilies (2007), Saving Face (2004), D.E.B.S. (2004), Set It Off (1996), The Handmaiden (2016), Carol (2015), Imagine Me and You (2005), Two of Us (2019), Rafiki (2018), and The Color Purple (1985).
Today I will be watching:
Rafiki (2018) dir. Wanuri Kahiu
Tumblr media
[Run Time: 1 hour 22 minutes, Language: Swahili, English, Available on: Tubi, Google Play, Apply Play, Amazon Prime, YouTube rentals]
Summary: "Good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives," but Kena and Ziki long for something more. When love blossoms between them, the two girls will be forced to choose between happiness and safety.
Cast:
Samantha Mugatsia as Kena Mwaura
Sheila Munyiva as Ziki Okemi
Here is what I have learned about Rafiki (main source is Wikipedia):
Rafiki was adapted from author Monica Arac de Nyeko’s short story Jambala Tree.
Rafiki was the first feature film to feature two women falling in love to come out of Kenya.
Rafiki was the first Kenyan film to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
Rafiki was banned in Kenya for promoting homosexuality after the writer and director refused to change the ending. Homosexuality is illegal in Kenya and can result in 14 years imprisonment, but support for LGBTQ rights is growing.
The writer and director, Wanuri Kahiu, sued the Kenyan government in order to allow the film to be screened in Kenya long enough to meet the eligibility criteria for entry into the Academy Awards.
The ban on the film was lifted for seven days, and every day it played to a sold out audience and brought in millions of shillings (1 million KES is ~7,700 USD)
Rafiki won Best Narrative Feature at the 2019 Seattle Queer Film Festival and a Silver Hugo Award at the Chicago International Film Festival. In total, Rafiki received 17 nominations and 17 awards at various international film festivals.
This was Samantha Mugatsia’s first role and Samantha won an award for Best Actress from the FESPACO festival.
Wanuri Kahiu is also the cofounder of a media collective called AFROBUBBLEGUM which supports African art “for its own sake.”
Samantha Mugatsia was in another film in 2018 but I do not see additional credits on IMDB, Sheila Munyiva was still getting work as recently as 2023, and Wanuri Kahiu is still working as well.
Tumblr media
So needless to say, this film is incredibly important and successful despite the barriers it found around it. I saw some reviews for this film that mentioned how the narrative was rather simplistic and the characters fairly flat and while I do not entirely disagree, though I also do not consider that to be 100% accurate. I think there are a lot of little moments of dimensionality in some of the characters that make me want to see more of them. Blacksta’s clear romantic interest in Kena and the way in which he is constantly kind and friendly to her to the point where he is the one she goes to for comfort after everything goes to shit only to have his last appearance be him stalking off angry that Kena is “hurting all the people that care about” her when she tells him she loves Ziki.
Mama Atim being homophobic to the point of a) aiding in the discovery and subsequent facilitation of a gay bashing by the local community and b) not letting Kena touch her when they meet in the hospital where Kena is working as a doctor, only to immediately turn around and tell Kena that Ziki is back in the country, thereby facilitating their reunion and the hopeful ending that got this film banned in the first place.
Kena’s father being kind and relatively accepting of his daughter’s homosexuality while there are implications around (though never direct references to) the reason he may be divorced, and remarried, with a child on the way.
Ziki being the one not to care about how much of their intimacy the public may see only to be the one to pull away from Kena after they get caught, because she is experiencing severe consequences for perhaps the first time (that is an assumption on my part, I just know the girl is relatively wealthy).
All of this to say that often the moments of complexity are small, but they do exist.
Tumblr media
Anyhoo, I think what I am thinking the most about in way of this film is less the plot and more everything else around it. Because this queer cinema syllabus is a warm up to watching BL, the challenges this film had with getting funding (their funding sources all came from outside of Kenya), with distribution, the legal battles Kahiu had to fight to get this film seen in a country she so clearly and deeply loves. Despite that, this film was a success, it broke a number of different barriers, and I will perpetually find it interesting how the prospect of money or positive attention can do so much to get a story out into the world.
This film promotes illegal behavior, this film was banned from airing in Kenya as a result. Yet, this film still aired in Kenya because someone making a legal ruling gave it a chance to meet eligibility criteria for one of (if not the) most famous awards shows in the world. And at the end of the day it wasn’t even the film that Kenya ended up submitting to the Academy Awards. This film sold out theaters, it raked in cash, it was the first in a number of ways.
It just makes me think of countries like Korea where, sure, homosexuality is not illegal, but where certain rights are still denied to queer people. Where very few celebrities are openly queer for risk of losing their jobs, yet continues to create BLs that gain international attention. Hell, even Thailand, which has established themselves as a BL soft power, sees many openly queer people struggling to find work in the film industry in spite of how many queer stories are getting pumped out. Also, I will no longer be accepting dead fish kisses from queer shows if the first lesbian love story out of Kenya gave us actual kisses.
Tumblr media
I don’t know exactly where I am going with this, I do not consider the situation of BL and the situation of Rafiki to be identical, just similar. That Rafiki still obtains concessions from a country where being queer can get you incarcerated because it has the chance to be seen in high profile competitions is an interesting, though not entirely surprising, phenomenon.
About the film itself: I loved the use of color in it, it falls into the same trend of all other lesbian films in that a lot of it is comprised of silent glances between women longing to be together. I think it went for a wider net with a shallower lens rather than a smaller scope and deeper exploration. I felt like the film definitely started slow, but that the relationship between Ziki and Kena developed incredibly fast, to the point where I wondered if they were maybe already together in some fashion before the film even started (not dating, but at least both already having established a mutual interest, etc). I do think Kahiu did a good job of putting enough detail in that it felt like there were other things happening around the main plot to flesh out the world these characters were living in.
I loved that when we first learn about Ziki’s desires, it is to get out of Kenya, go somewhere people have never met an actual African, and not be like other Kenyan girls. But that when the choice to leave is removed from her, and she is sent to London to escape the societal backlash from being caught being queer, that she does not want to go. I loved that Kena was the one who spent a lot of time hiding her sexuality and her affection for Ziki before they were discovered, only to be the person to try to continue, to be visible, to be with Ziki after they are caught and beaten.
Tumblr media
I thought it was so incredibly brave of Kena to walk up to Ziki’s door, look Ziki’s mother in the eye, and ask to talk to her daughter after everything that had happened the previous night, after being threatened by Ziki’s mother when she first catches them, and insulted by her mother when she comes to pick Ziki up from the police station.
I am in awe of people who stick to their convictions in cases like this. Wanuri Kaihu, who just wanted to “portray a "normal love story" that acknowledges the heroic challenges of choosing a "difficult love"” and does not see this act as a political one did not back down when faced with the options of removing hope from the ending and letting the film play in her own country or letting these girls meet again, in the sunshine, and have it kept from her own people. It reminds me of Strange Fruit from Unit 4, actually, when Kyle Schickner rejected $6 million in funding for his film because it would not have then been able to make his main character Black and gay. I marvel at how often people do not make those same decisions.
Favorite Moment
Tumblr media
Okay, so. It is a very short and simple moment, only a few seconds long, but from my perspective it is one of the most important scenes in the entire film. Right near the end, after Kena has gone to see Ziki and Ziki has told her she will be sent to London, she goes and sits on a bench by herself. And after a moment someone just quietly takes a seat next to her. It is the other out, gay character who we have seen multiple times in passing. They just look at each other, neither of them says a word. But dear GOD I loved it so much.
Every time we have seen him before this moment, he is being harassed on the street. He is clearly living an entire life with his own struggle that exists completely outside of Kena and Ziki’s. At one point his face is bandaged, a clear indicator that he had recently been physically assaulted. Every time Kena is present when he is being harassed all she can do is get up silently and walk away. She never stands up for him, she never checks in on him. I actually had a moment of disappointment at one point when Kena storms off and Ziki goes to check on her upset because Kena left her alone. Kena opens the sliding door of the van and I thought for just the briefest of seconds that it might cut to that guy sitting there.
Tumblr media
Instead it is candles, and they have sex, and that is also great and I am glad that scene exists, but I think in the times we are living in now, I was a little sad to see that they were not silently supporting each other. WHICH IS WHY I AM SO GLAD THAT HE DID AT THE END.
It is so so so so so important to me that this gay man, who has been living his life openly and suffering for it, and knows what it is like just sits down next to Kena to let her know that he is watching, that he is there, and that he understands. And he doesn’t even have to say a fucking word. That is community looking out for each other, and it will be beautiful every time.
Favorite Quote
“I wish we could go someplace we were real”
Score
8.5/10
It was not my favorite film, but I am so grateful that it exists, and I hope that the queer people living in Kenya who need movies like this one have found a way to watch it, and I think that the fact this film exists at all is amazing.
Coming up next, the last film in Unit 5: Lesbians- The Color Purple. I actually just got the audiobook from the library so I am looking forward to approaching the film viewing with more of an adaptation lens on it.

Dylan O’Brien premieres dark comedy at Sundance — alongside a ‘Gilmore Girls’ star
15 minutes before the world premiere of ‘Twinless,’ a dark comedy that sees ‘The Maze Runner’ star playing a character who is grieving the loss of his twin brother, the actor was practically giddy as he talked about the film
Tumblr media
Aside from a skiing trip he took with his family when he was a kid, Dylan O’Brien doesn’t have much of a connection to Utah.
His biggest association with the Beehive State is the Sundance Film Festival.
For the second year in a row, “The Maze Runner” star is featured in a film at the Park City-based festival — and he’s particularly excited about this moment in his career.
‘Twinless,’ starring Dylan O’Brien, premieres at Sundance
Fifteen minutes before the world premiere of “Twinless,” a dark comedy that sees O’Brien playing a character who is grieving the loss of his twin brother, the actor was practically giddy as he talked about being involved in the film.
“It was one of my favorite scripts I’ve ever read — from the moment I picked it up,“ O’Brien told the Deseret News at the Eccles Center in Park City Thursday night. ”I still can’t believe it got sent to me. I got really lucky.”
O’Brien first read the script back in 2020, but the film didn’t begin production until after the Hollywood strikes ended in 2023.
The actor said he immediately connected with the tone of the story — the darkness peppered with humor throughout.
“It’s just like my favorite kind of movie,” he told the Deseret News during a brief interview. “It’s funny, it’s kind of heartbreaking … every character is so distinct, and the relationships are beautiful and authentic and real.”
The movie, which features director and screenwriter James Sweeney in a starring role alongside O’Brien, comes with its fair share of twists as the two characters form a friendship over a shared trauma of losing a twin — and as that friendship dramatically unravels.
“Twinless” is not yet rated. It includes strong language and brief instances of nudity and sexual content.
There were some technical issues at the opening night screening in Park City.
The festival briefly delayed the premiere to address an audio glitch, but the sound still cut out a handful of times during the screening.
The issue, however, didn’t affect the warm reception the film received from its first public audience.
What ‘Gilmore Girls’ star Lauren Graham said about ‘Twinless’
Tumblr media
Lauren Graham, who has solidified her role as a strong motherly figure in shows like “Gilmore Girls” and “Parenthood,” brings an edgier tone to her supporting role as O’Brien’s grieving mom in “Twinless.”
“James (Sweeney) said, ‘I’m surprised that you’re willing to play someone so unsympathetic,” she said with a laugh during the post-screening Q&A. “And I said, ‘Yeah!’”
Like her co-star O’Brien, Graham said it was a no-brainer joining the cast of “Twinless” — ultimately a testament to Sweeney’s knack for storytelling.
“I was so fascinated when I read it,” she said during the Q&A. “It was unlike anything I’d ever read, and it still is.”

Uchusen Vol. 182 (Autumn 2023) Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger | Detail of Super Sentai Main Cast Member Interviews (translations below)
Publication: October 2, 2023
Taisei Sakai x Watanabe Aoto x Kaku So x Masashi Ikeda Interview
The story has entered a new chapter! The actors who play the kings have grown just as much as their characters through more than half a year of filming. In this issue, we asked Taisei Sakai, Watanabe Aoto, Kaku So, and Masashi Ikeda about stories from filming and their enthusiasm for the new chapter.
"First, we'd like to talk about the battle against the Earth Empire, Bugnarak, which was depicted in episode 26. While filming, did you notice any growth in your characters?"
Ikeda: Jeramie has grown significantly. Gradually, he's become more human, and has shown new sides and changes in his feelings, which gave off the feeling that he was being "updated" as I played the role.
Sakai: Gira hasn't changed much in terms of his character, but I felt that the feelings he has for his people have changed greatly since becoming king.
Watanabe: The impact of Yanma's first appearance was strong, so I think the way he's depicted is to show the various sides of him. As an actor, it was fun to see developments continue, allowing me to play new aspects of his character.
Kaku: There was a big change in Kaguragi with the absence of Racules……I enjoyed acting and having conversations with (Masato) Yano-chan, who plays the role of Racules, and many people complimented us on our performance by saying, "It's like something out of a Taiga drama,* only more profound." However, I get the strong impression that Kaguragi remains the same, and is as relaxed as ever. Perhaps more impressive than the change in character, is the growing friendship between the cast members over the past six months. We even go out to eat after filming finishes….. (*annual historical drama by NHK)
Watanabe: With the exception of our days off, we're always together.
"Looking back, please tell us about any episodes that left a particularly strong impression on you."
Kaku: It would have to be episode 26. It's the last episode of the first chapter, and I was moved by the scene where Gira and the others resolve things with the Bugnarak. The one that was most fun to play was episode 24, which was the summer festival episode. Wearing a yukata in that worldview was also fun.
Ikeda: Episode 26 is definitely memorable, but if I had to choose the best one, I'd say it's episode 11. I think that the scene where Jeramie made his first appearance, taking off the spider mask he's worn for 2,000 years, was the first step in his new life. I'll never forget that scene.
Watanabe: The first film shoot I had was together with Gira. From there, everyone came together in episode 5, and after Legend King-Ohger arrived, Jeramie joined us…..When I think back on the process, the most memorable moment was when all 6 of us were together for the shoot. In particular, I was moved by episode 19, when it was announced that we were, "The Five Kingdom Unusual Incident Countermeasure Lifesaving Force," abbreviated as, "Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger!"
Sakai: The 6 of us transforming together in episode 19 left a deep impression on me as well. I was amazed when I saw the finished video for the first time. I was impressed by the wonderful effects of the screen cracking at the moments of impact.
Ikeda: It was fun to see everyone fighting together, and gave off an atmosphere unique to the Sentai series.
"We'd also like to ask about the retainers who support the kings. What are everyone's impressions of Douga, Shiokara, Kuroda, and Gerojim?"
Kaku: Despite the fact that he hides his face, I'm glad that Kuroda is very popular. I discussed with (Hajime) Kanzaki-san, who plays Kuroda, that the relationship between Kaguragi and Kuroda is that of a lord and a spy, but Kuroda's personality became alot more prominent, and he's since come to the forefront. Before I knew it, he became an essential part of King-Ohger.
Ikeda: Gerojim is so cute! When I watch the broadcasts, I can't help but laugh when Tomokazu Seki-san (Gerojim's voice actor) interjects between my lines. I never thought I'd have a retainer, or that he'd even ride in God King-Ohger. I did alot of acting with monsters, especially scenes with (Riichi) Seike-san, who plays Desnarak VIII. Seike-san is a really passionate actor, and before we performed the farewell scene between Desnarak VIII and Jeramie in episode 26, Seike-san encouraged me with, "Come at me with everything you've got!" In the beginning, I wasn't used to acting with Suit Actors, but thanks to Seike-san and the others, I was able to act naturally, which made me very happy.
Watanabe: Shiokara and the others are a good group of friends who react to every single thing Yanma does. On our days off, Chiwata Yuhei-kun, who plays the role of Shiokara, takes the initiative in arranging dinner parties for the N'Kosopa team. I'm very grateful that communication is connected through Chiwata-kun, and I'm also happy that just like in the show, Shiokara plays the role of connecting me with our citizens.
Sakai: Episodes between Douga and Gira haven't really been depicted, but it seems like a strong relationship was formed over the 2 years between episodes 26 and 27. They must have thought of ways to ensure that food would reach the children, and how to run the country while coming up with ideas together on how to better serve the people.
"Did the staff tell you about any changes that occurred during the span of those 2 years?"
Sakai: I haven't been told the specifics, but Director Kazuya Kamihoriuchi told me that he wanted Gira to be the same as before, but to show a casual composure when performing final attacks.
Ikeda: Although Jeramie's 2,000 years old, on the inside, he's as innocent as a child and is inspired by every single thing that happens to him. So, I think he's taken in alot during those 2 years. Especially in the new chapter, we can see his growth as he tries to express his feelings to the other kings in a straightforward manner. The biggest change was that Jeramie became king, so he must've been busy building a nation for the past 2 years, right? That's what I think atleast. Personally, I'm happy that my country is finally being projected on the LED wall.
Kaku: Kaguragi was arrested for using an underground cultivator called "Arijigoku," which could also be used as a weapon, but he was probably conscious of the fight against Racules, so was making agricultural machines that could be converted into weapons. However, even after 2 years, I still don't know what he's thinking. I wonder what forms of communication he'll start to use……Now that Racules is gone, it seems easy to deceive anyone, so I'm looking forward to seeing what he'll do (laughs).
Watanabe: Not only Kaguragi, but Yanma was also arrested for monopolizing electricity to create the Ultra PC called, "Under Heaven and Earth, I'm the only one." This just shows that even 2 years later, the kings can't sit still.
"The imprisonment of the kings was a surprise, but at the same time, the new chapter has brought changes in hairstyles and costumes."
Watanabe: I was told that the visuals would change when we started depicting what was happening 2 years later. So, I suggested a more mature haircut, thinking it’ll help Yanma settle down, but Director Kamihoriuchi immediately rejected it. Then came the blonde pompadour, and I thought that he was far from settling down, and that his "peak" was yet to come. I actually had the opportunity to suggest a new visual to the Director, and as it was also one of the choices for Yanma's original costume, the short gakuran was chosen
Kaku: Kaguragi has black hair, but I thought it would've been better if he had brown hair….but, that didn't work out (laughs). I'm looking forward to letting my hair down and seeing how the viewers react.
Ikeda: Jeramie now wears a cloak, which makes him look more dignified as a king. Also, the fact that he can now proudly show his Bugnarak hand is a sign that humans and Bugnarak have become closer over the past 2 years, and that the world has become more peaceful. This also seems to have had a significant change in his personality.
Sakai: My changes were left up to the make up artists (laughs). My hair is longer and parted down the middle, and I'm wearing the same clothes as Racules…..I've made a bunch of suggestions myself, but nothing's been approved (laughs). I wonder, will the reason for why he's wearing Racules's clothes and his hairstyle change be revealed in future episodes…..? That's what I imagine.
"By the way, when was everyone made aware of the new chapter?"
Kaku: I think it was right after the dubbing for "Adventure Heaven." The costumes were going to change from episode 27, and there were discussions of, "What are we going to do about it?"
Watanabe: It was about 2 weeks before we started filming, so we didn't have alot of time.
Ikeda: When they said it took place 2 years later, I had the image of a new development in an anime, so it made me very motivated.
"Episode 28 featured a difficult episode of switching roles. Gira and Jeramie, Yanma and Rita, Kaguragi and Hymeno switched, how did you like each of the roles you played?"
Watanabe: I tried to play the role in my own way without asking Yuzuki-chan too many questions. I tried to exaggerate Rita's image by keeping my distance from them except for the physical part, and I wonder, did it come out good? On the other hand, Yuzuki-chan asked me various questions, but since we didn't have many scenes where we talked to each other, I didn't know what was going on until I watched the broadcast.
Kaku: I was also looking forward to seeing how Marie (Erika-san) would play Kaguragi. In my case, I discussed this with Marie, and we began to imitate each other, starting with our finger movements one by one. However, at the start of filming, Director Kamioriuchi told me that it, "Wasn't interesting." I panicked when I heard his comments. The Director wanted her to play the role as if she were an exaggerated imitation of "Hollywood Zakoshisyoh,*" and from there, he expanded on the image he had for Hymeno. But, was I really becoming Hymeno? I was worried at first. Marie's performance as Kaguragi was so far out there, that it was almost too much. She would say, "Ro~Yal~Arms~!!" and I would respond with, "I've never said it like that!," and so she had to try again (laughs). (*Japanese comedian)
Sakai: It’s really difficult for one person to come up with a performance that took about six months to create. Ikeda-kun taught me in detail about Jeramie's gestures, the way he walked, and even the tone of his voice, and I studied and consulted with him alot during filming.
Ikeda: I could tell that we were thinking about the various elements of each other. I kept in mind that we should try to respect each other and exaggerate the other person's character to make it just right.
"We'd also like to ask you about the "Kingdom Dance Competition" that became a hot topic when it was released over the summer. What’s the story behind that video of you dancing "Zenryoku King" in a decisive competition?”
Kaku: It was difficult in many ways! (laughs). I thought I only had to do the scenes where I appeared, but then I realized that I had to dance to all of them. It was very hard, partly because we were filming the movie at the same time.
Sakai: But, that was the first time all the cast members got together for filming. King-Ohger had alot of filming done in the different countries, so it was rare for everyone to gather together, including the entourage. That's why filming it was lively and fun.
Ikeda: I personally have something to say about the distributed video! I was told that since it was being done in one take, even if we made a mistake, it would still be used. However, the other members mistakes weren't included, and only my mistakes were picked up......(laughs). This is to the staff! Couldn't you have just changed the order of the shots?!
Watanabe: But, the Bugnarak team's dancing was wonderful.
Ikeda: That's because Seike-san gathered the team's Suit Actors and even held a strategy meeting.
Kaku: The sexy poses of Rita and Morfonia in Gokkan were ordered by Director Kamihoriuchi. It was interesting to see that Morfonia didn't seem too happy about it (laughs).
"Finally, can you tell us about the development of the new chapter and its highlights?"
Kaku: I think that the pasts of Kaguragi and Suzume will be further explored, which will deepen your love for the characters. I'm looking forward to the future of this story, not only as an actor, but also as a viewer.
Ikeda: I think that not only the pasts of each king and their retainers, but also the mysteries of the world of King-Ohger will continue to be revealed. I want to know the ending as soon as possible, so I can't wait to receive the next script!
Watanabe: Not just Yanma, but past stories related to N'Kosopa will also be depicted, so I hope you'll continue to watch King-Ohger every week!
Sakai: Gira is especially mysterious. He was born into a royal family, and yet he ended up in an orphanage, and we don't know why he knows about the Wrath of God. Even I don't know the truth behind it, but I've been imagining alot of different things as I play the role. I hope that from now on, you'll continue to support King-Ohger! _
Murakami Erika x Yuzuki Hirakawa Interview
Following the male cast members, we asked Murakami Erika, who plays the role of Hymeno Ran, and Yuzuki Hirakawa, who plays the role of Rita Kaniska, to talk to us. The two of them will talk about everything, from the changes they went through during the six months of filming, the costume changes that accompanied the start of the second chapter, and even the untold story of the body swapping episode depicted in episode 28.
"With episode 26, the battle against the Earth Empire, Bugnarak, has come to an end. Having played Hymeno and Rita for six months since the first episode, how do you feel your characters have changed?"
Murakami: Hymeno was the type of queen who wasn't suited for collective actions, having led people according to her own selfishness. But, when the Bugnarak attacked, she decided to join forces with the other kings to save Chikyu. In episode 7, there's a scene where Hymeno couldn't respond immediately to Gira saying the words, "Let's be friends!" After that, I think she gradually developed a mutual relationship with Gira and the others, and was able to grow toward her goal of saving Chikyu.
Hirakawa: Rita has slowly begun to depend on others. I think that they're gradually becoming able to express their honest feelings. In the beginning, Rita was building walls against others on their own, but as the story progressed, their barrier against the other kings gradually grew smaller. As a result, their self control to suppress their feelings have weakened, which is why they've started to sometimes scream in front of others.
"Hymeno has her retainer Sebastian, and Rita has their retainer Morfonia. As Hymeno and Rita, were there many scenes where you interacted with those two characters?"
Murakami: Sebastian is the one who listens to Hymeno's every request and spoils her. But, when taking God King-Ohger into battle in episode 25, although she was afraid that she might get them killed in battle, she asked Sebastian and the others, "It's incredibly selfish, but will you hear me out?," as if begging them to fight with her. It really was a lovely moment where I felt the relationship of trust between the king of Ishabana and her entourage.
Hirakawa: Originally, Rita and Morfonia had a professional relationship only. Then, during episode 10, Morfonia approached Rita, and the distance between them changed. In episode 25, Rita asked Morfonia for a favor outside of work, and I think this showed that the relationship between the two of them has grown even deeper.
"How is your relationship with Hiroto Yoshimitsu-san, who plays Sebastian, and Kasumi Hasegawa-san, who plays Morfonia?"
Murakami: Yoshimitsu-san is really sweet to me (laughs). He's always buying me something tasty.
Hirakawa: It was daifuku the other day (laughs).
Murakami: It was delicious~ (laughs). Also, when I would raise my voice during a scene, (Mizushima) Marina-san, who plays Elegance Moun, would become worried and give me throat lozenges…..Since the members of Ishabana's entourage are all older than me, they spoil me as if I were their daughter.
Hirakawa: Kasumin (Hasegawa-san) is like a kind big sister who's always looking out for me. Possibly due to both of us being from Kyushu, we became good friends the more we started hanging out in our private lives. Recently, we've been doing live streams together, and have become closer than ever.
"Looking back up to episode 26, what were the most memorable scenes?"
Hirakawa: Rita's past being portrayed in episode 16 was the most memorable for me. Rita's past was hard to imagine and rather mysterious. Although not everything was explained, I think that episode 16, which explained why they became king and what happened to them in the past, was the episode that impacted me the most in the past six months.
Murakami: We've been filming for six months, but the most memorable was episode 3. Hymeno's selfish, but she's also a king, so she has her beliefs. I'm most attached to episode 3 in the sense that it depicts Hymeno's inner self. But, after learning in episode 7 that her parents deaths were caused by scorpion poison, she can no longer hold back her feelings…..This development was also important for Hymeno. Although she expresses her own strength, she also feels resentment toward the unsolved case, and I acted while thinking about Hymeno's inner thoughts.
"Has anything changed in the relationship between the cast members?"
Murakami: After about four or five months, everyone would laugh at me no matter what I said. I can now speak my mind without worrying (laughs). I'm not really good at expressing my opinions in front of other people, but I've become able to do so with confidence. My mother, who watched "King-chan" (TTFC talk show), even said to me, "I think you've become more comfortable with the other cast members, and your sense of humor has improved, hasn't it?"
Hirakawa: You really make us laugh over trivial things. I was surprised at first, because Marie's wasn't the comedic type. Now, I'm also in the mood to play along.
Murakami: Recently, Kaku-san, Aoto-kun and I went out for dinner, and we ended up going to 4 different places. We were having so much fun, that I didn't realize we were moving from one restaurant to another. I've come to trust them both with all my heart, and I even surprised myself at how well I could get along with people.
Hirakawa: I may not have changed in any way, but……What do you think? Have you noticed anything?
Murakami: In the beginning, Yuzuki didn't complain at all, right? But lately, she's started mumbling things like, "It's painful," and, "I'm tired."
Hirakawa: I'm not good at telling people that I'm having a hard time. I'm mindful of not saying anything because I'm concerned about worrying or bothering others. But, I think I've gotten too close to Marie and the others, so it comes out unconsciously. Because we're together every day, I feel like I don't have to care anymore, as we share the same physically and mentally demanding times.
Murakami: That being said, the stage greeting held in Fukuoka for "Adventure Heaven" was like a field trip. Even though it was work, everyone was having fun and it felt like being on vacation.
Hirakawa: Marie joined us on a different plane, but she was wearing big sunglasses and looked like a celebrity going overseas. I took a bunch of pictures of Marie and sent them in the group chat…..
Murakami: I suddenly noticed that there were alot of hidden photos taken of me in the group chat (laughs). As revenge, next time, I'll take lots of cool photos of everyone…..It was really fun. The cast of King-Ohger is friendly regardless of gender, so it really makes you feel like you're back in high school. Until now, I haven't had the opportunity to work with so many colleagues who are aiming for the same goal, so it's very refreshing,
"Episode 27 onward will be the second chapter, and will depict the battle against the Uchu Five Jesters in the world 2 years later. What was your impression when you first heard about the new chapter?"
Murakami: We know what happens next when we receive the scripts, so I was really surprised when I read the scripts for episodes 27-29. It's 2 years later, but worst of all, we're out of the picture (laughs). As I read on, I realized that we were imprisoned! I thought that was an interesting angle.
Hirakawa: I've never heard of time skips in the middle of a story within the Super Sentai series, have you? I was also told that the visuals would be changing. I felt very honored to be able to participate in a production that provided such a rare experience.
Murakami: I'm really happy because there are so many new things happening within King-Ohger, including filming with an LED wall.
"We'd like to hear more about when you learned about the new costumes."
Murakami: If I'm remembering right, I was having a review meeting with Director Kamihoriuchi at a yakiniku restaurant, when he casually said to me, "Think about what kind of visuals you want." At the time, I thought it would be for a one time episode, so I thought, "Gira with a shaved head?" or something…..I was thinking things like that, but then I heard that they were asking about new visuals to be used from episode 27 onward. In Hymeno's case, up until now it's always been about cute things, but I talked about how it'd be cooler to express herself with natural elements, rather than to dress her up. As a result, I ended up with a costume like that of a female knight. The hairstyle, which used to change each episode, was shifted to include more hair extensions and different colors
Hirakawa: Rita's costume has changed only in that the length of their jacket has become shorter, but their hairstyle has changed alot. Actually, I've been saying that I wanted to cut my hair since the beginning of filming. However, this wasn't allowed in the beginning, and filming proceeded with my long hair. Director Kamihoriuchi remembered this and suggested that, "Rita should cut their hair after two years." Rita was given a short hair cut and was able to turn their visuals in a cooler direction.
"Does this mean that the costumes were made lighter to accommodate the summer shoot?"
Murakami: I don't think so. It was still hot (laughs).
Hirakawa: It was hot……(laughs).
"2 years later, Hymeno was charged with arson, and Rita was imprisoned in Gokkan for violating the Labor Standards Law. How have Hymeno and Rita changed during the span of 2 years, and how will you interpret these changes through your performance?"
Murakami: I felt that we were able to fight while being aware of our respective roles. In the beginning, the kings weren't well organized, but over the past 2 years, they seem to have developed a sense of camaraderie.
Hirakawa: Their resolve as a king has become stronger, and I think it shows in their visuals. However, Rita has grown in their ability to talk with the others as friends, while also taking their feelings into consideration.
"Episode 28, the most recently aired episode, depicted the body swapping of the kings. Murakami-san plays Kaguragi and Hirakawa-san plays Yanma. How was the filming for that?"
Murakami: I'm so tired! In all my time in the entertainment industry, I've never acted in such a disorganized manner, so I'm worried that everyone will be turned off by my performance. Kaku-san is very kind, so he said, "It was fun!," but I was still worried about it! (laughs). I think the most obvious way to express Kaguragi's performance is through his eyes, so I tried my best to open my eyes while spreading my legs, but I overdid it and we had to reshoot. However, the reason I was able to do such a disorganized performance may be because I get along so well with everyone and am able to tell jokes and make funny faces.
Hirakawa: I didn't really prepare for the role of Yanma that much. That's because I'm abit like Yanma in some aspects of my everyday life (laughs). I studied yankii like postures, but other than that, I tried not to think about anything other than playing a passionate guy named Yanma. More than that, when I was playing the role of Yanma, I was showing my entire face, so I was very conscious of that. I've been performing with my face hidden for more than half a year, so I was surprised at how embarrassed I felt showing my face (laughs). While checking the monitor, I thought to myself, "This is what I look like……"
"What did you think of Hymeno being played by Kaku-san, and Rita being played by Watanabe-san?"
Murakami: I was surprised to realize that this is what Hymeno looks like from other people's perspective. When Hymeno couldn't accept Kaguragi's body, I think I would've wanted to say, "I can't take it!," and run away. However, Kaku acting all depressed was very cute. I was very happy that he opened up a side of Hymeno that I didn't have.
Hirakawa: Aoto just did whatever he wanted (laughs). Even though I thought to myself, "They wouldn't open their eyes that wide, would they?," I felt that Yuzuki Hirakawa's performance broadened the range of Rita's character. Due to the stress of having their body swapped, Rita's emotions are more tense than usual. It made me realize that I could show these kinds of facial expressions. It made it easier for me to do my future performances.
Murakami: Now that I think about it, during filming for episode 27, Director Kamihoriuchi was laughing while watching the monitor the whole time (laughs).
Hirakawa: Before I knew it, I became more determined to make the Director laugh.
"It was because of that determination that it turned into such an outrageous episode. Now, we're anxious to see what'll happen next, but what would you two like the fans to pay attention to when watching the show?"
Murakami: The foreshadowing from previous episodes are gradually being revealed, and there are episodes in which each character's pasts are explored in depth. For example, Sebastian's real name, which hasn't currently been revealed, may be mentioned, and even if you haven't watched it up to this point, I'd like you to watch King-Ohger, even if you start from the new chapter!
Hirakawa: Also, there's an all out action episode by Director Sakamoto Hiroshi. Although filming hasn't started yet (at the time of this interview), I've heard that there'll be lots of action, so I'm really looking forward to doing the performance. It'd make me happy if you could continue to watch every week!

Shinichiro Miki (Kamejim Voice Actor)
Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger has entered its second chapter, but there's only one enemy leader that's survived from the first chapter. His name, is Kamejim Unka! He was the one behind the 2,000 year battle between humans and Bugnarak, and is one of the Uchu Five Jesters who serve under the Uchu King, Dagded Dujardin. The voice is provided by veteran voice actor Shinichiro Miki, making this his first performance in the Super Sentai series. Miki is a big fan of King-Ohger himself, so how does he approach the role of Kamejim Unka?
"Miki-san is also known for his role as Sieg in "Kamen Rider Den-O," but this is his first performance in the Super Sentai series. What are your impressions of the series?"
Miki: I love tokusatsu productions, and have been watching them since "Himitsu Sentai Goranger," which is from my generation. But, after I started working as a voice actor, whenever I heard the voice of someone I knew who was appearing in those shows, I stopped watching them out of jealousy (laughs). It was only after I started working on Den-O that those feelings toned down abit, and I was able to watch them again. These days, I listen to the voices of my juniors and think to myself, "(Yuki) Kaji-kun is really doing his best~." Even so, I still get jealous (laughs).
"What was your impression when you first heard about the setting of King-Ohger, and the role of Kamejim that Miki-san plays?"
Miki: I felt that there were alot of new elements, and thought, "This is interesting and different from previous Super Sentai!" When I first saw Kamejim's design, my impression was, "It's really cool!" I was told that he was a, "Sharp intellectual, and a faithful subordinate of King Desnarak VIII," although, I expected him to have something happening behind the scenes (laughs). I got the impression that he was polite with his words, but I couldn't understand his true feelings, and during the audition, I was conscious of trying to convey the nuances of that part well.
"There seems to have been various decisions made as recording progressed, so were there any changes in the way you created the role compared to the beginning?"
Miki: As the story progresses, we're learning more about his character, and there are alot more parts of him that, "Dare to say the opposite of what he means, but still holds true." Along with this, the range of my speaking style has expanded, and I try to be aware of the thought behind the dialogue as I go into recording.
"You said that you expected, "Something to be happening behind the scenes," and we have the impression that Kamejim evolved into a character with one or two quirks as a result of Miki-san's performance."
Miki: Thank you so much. Well, things just turned out that way (laughs). That being said, I think the result is from a good mix of not only my voice acting, but the performance of Suit Actor (Masato) Tsutamune-san acting out my character. Even though the meaning of the dialogue doesn't change, we're recording while focusing on the way he speaks during the action scenes. For this reason, during dubbing scenes, I try to pick up on the movements of Tsutamune-san's hands and fingers as much as possible from the footage.
"Capturing the theatrical elements from a Suit Actor's performance requires a different skill set from that of an anime."
Miki: In the sense that Tsutamune-san plays the role and adds his voice to the finished video, it's more similar to dubbing a foreign film than to an anime. However, being able to go and observe filming and talk with Tsutamune-san, and being able to work with the actors to create the show, is what makes it different from foreign films. I believe that communicating in this way is one of the most important aspects of perfecting a character.
"What kinds of conversations did you have at the recording studio with Shimura Tomoyuki-san, Desnarak VIII's voice actor, who Kamejim served until episode 26?"
Miki: I call him "Shimu-nii," as we've known each other for over 20 years. So, from the first recording session, we said to each other, "This is reassuring!" However, Shimu-nii is a "doer." When the Director asks him to do something on set, he does so many things that it becomes too much. Because of his personality, he brings smiles to everyone on set. The true character of Desnarak VIII……Although he's not a person, I think the kindness towards his fellow comrades is linked to Shimu-nii's kindness.
"Also, speaking of characters played by actors rather than voice actors, don't you have alot of interactions with Jeramie?"
Miki: We've never done the recording together. Kamejim doesn't have much to do with Jeramie, so there weren't many scenes where we had direct conversations. It's like we just talked to ourselves…..Jeramie has lived for 2,000 years, but he has a more child like side to him compared to Gira. From Kamejim's point of view, I think he thought that part of him is adorable.
"From episode 27, the story enters the second chapter, where the King-Ohgers confront Kamejim Unka and those from the Uchu Five Jesters. When did Miki-san learn of these developments?"
Miki: I had heard beforehand that, "There's an even more powerful enemy in the universe, and that Kamejim was a spy sent by that enemy," but when he was defeated by God King-Ohger and exploded in episode 26, I was worried that he wouldn't be coming back (laughs). In order to prepare for the role, I was given alittle more information than the viewers, and was shocked by the scripts around episode 27. After receiving a new script at the office, I often look them over while having a drink, and there were many moving developments, including the scene where Desnarak VIII defends Jeramie. I cry every time I read it. If I hadn't been able to participate after episode 27 though, I might've cried in a different way. I survived, so at that time, my tears were that of relief (laughs). The storytelling in King-Ohger has a wonderful way of creating a story that can also resonate with the hearts of adults.
"Now that Kamejim Unka has been revealed as one of the Uchu Five Jesters, how did you react to his change in position?"
Miki: I think he's most comfortable in a position like that, as a second in command. I think he's the type of person who leaves the big things to someone else and enjoys doing what he wants to do. The way he reappears in episode 27 is also typical of him. Objectively, I think of him with, "He always looks like he's having fun," and, "I wish I could live like that."
"Since your position changed, did your role change in any way?"
Miki: There were basically no changes. There's a change when the person he supports is nearby and when they’re not, but up until episode 26 and from episode 27 onwards, there's no change in personality, just a change in the person he serves. However, since his comrades of the Uchu Five Jesters have appeared and are in the same position as him, I think there’ll be new aspects in the interactions with them that have never been seen before.
"Characters in the same position consist of Goma Rosalia, Hilbil Leech, and Minongan Moth. What kind of conversations did you have with the cast members who play them?"
Miki: The Uchu Five Jesters cast has a great lineup, with (Kazuhiro) Yamaji-san and (Miyuki) Sawashiro-san. I don't have much of an opportunity to talk with them, but I talked to Tomokazu Seki the other day, and he said, "It seems like they picked me since Minongan Moth is a character who doesn't talk much" (laughs). Then I remember telling (Ishida) Akira-kun, "I'm happy we're working on the same program again."
"On the other hand, you were in charge of the narration for “The Secret of King Racules,” which is available on the Toei's Tokusatsu Official YouTube Channel."
Miki: In the main show, Jeramie narrates the story, but since "The Secret of King Racules" is the story of the "Worst King," it was decided that since I'm on the evil side, I would be in charge of the narration. However, if I did it as Kamejim, it would be too obvious, so I tried to do it in a calm manner, keeping the narration style in mind.
"What do you think about the story in "The Secret of King Racules?"
Miki: I cried. It's alittle more mature than the main story, and the final scene was especially emotional. I also liked the screen composition, where the faces of King Racules and Vedalia are alternately shown in close ups in the background. It was also very emotional that Kofuki, who appeared in that work, rode the 20 person combined God King-Ohger in episode 25 of the main story.
"Miki-san said he cries as he reads the script, but which scenes in the episodes that have aired so far have been most memorable?"
Miki: There's too many! Like the scene in episode 16 where Rita says, "Thank you," in a small voice after receiving the Moffun from Hymeno, or the scene in episode 25, where the retainers of each country expressing their feelings towards the kings is depicted…..There are really too many to choose from. I watch the broadcasts 3 times every Sunday. First, I watch the reactions on SNS in real time, saying things like, "I can see why people would react this way here," and, "I see!" (laughs). Then, while drinking, I would do it a second and then third time. Afterwards, while reading the script for the next episode, which had already been dubbed, I'd think, "This is what happens after this, huh," and then start to cry (laughs). Even though I didn't appear in it, I went to the theater to see "Adventure Heaven" as a fan.
"You're looking at this from a genuine fan's perspective, rather than from a performer's perspective."
Miki: Of course, there are things I can reflect on about myself, but that's something I can make use of in my next job. While I want to reflect, I also want to have fun with the fans. In all my years as a voice actor, this may be the first work that makes me feel this way.
"Why are you so enthusiastic about King-Ohger?"
Miki: There's one reason for participating in it, but I think there's also many other reasons, such as the story, the wonderful character designs, and the fact that the filming method is different from what we've seen before. Maybe it's the excitement and sense of being with everyone in an era and worldview that's different from usual.
"King-Ohger continues to have unpredictable developments, Miki-san, please tell us what you think we should focus on going forward."
Miki: The development of Gira's involvement with the Kyoryuger's has become an even newer development within the new developments of the second chapter. I'm sure that these developments will continue to go beyond the expectations of the fans who have been watching the show. Although I know the story alittle earlier than you readers, I'd like to look forward to the future developments with a passionate attitude. When I see words related to King-Ohger trending on SNS every Sunday morning, I feel happy as if they were my own, and this show has taught me how to enjoy watching it with the fans. I hope you'll continue to enjoy your time with me!

== Love Notes ==
Hey there lovelies! Happy start to the weekend! I truly hope you've had fun this week in some capacity. There's been something for everyone and hopefully we continue to see some hype coming up in the up coming weeks.
Today I wanted to remind you of something that I know you've heard before, but like anything in this life, repetition helps to solidify things so I'm gonna say some of it again. You don't need to prove to anyone your worth. You don't need to beg for anyone to love you and you certainly don't need to be someone you're not for someone else's sake. We all have demands from outside forces every day-- work, school, etc, and a lot of those demands are things we have to cope with in order to function in and be a part of society. Those demands aren't always in our best interest, but for the most part they're at least somewhat reasonable. However, there are going to be times that others have demands on you that are completely unreasonable. Maybe someone expects you to fall into a pretty little category. Maybe someone expects you to understand them when they aren't being clear. Maybe someone expects you to bend over backwards and change for their benefit, but not provide you with the same courtesy.
Whatever unreasonable demands you're dealing with, I just want to send you a reminder that you are allowed to say no. You are allowed to set up boundaries to help minimise that kind of behavior. You are allowed to just be you, and to continue to shine being you. Nothing is black and white, so it may not be easy, and may not be viable, or safe for some people-- I absolutely get that, and you should always keep your safety and security top of mind. But if you have the wiggle room, and you can set up those boundaries, remember there's nothing wrong with wanting to continue to be you, the way you are and defending that you.
You are wonderful lovelies, and we all have things in life we can improve on, but you being your beautiful, unique, authentic self is a right, and you have every right to protect the parts of you you hold dear. You don't have to prove to anyone that you are worthy of love just being yourself-- because you already ARE worthy of love, and light, and good things.
You don't have to fit into a neat little box to be loved, or valid. You are already both of those things, and sometimes it's hard to see it in ourselves-- so this reminder is from me to you, from the crew, to you, that you are wonderful just the way you are. Rest well and be kind to yourselves lovelies, you deserve it.

Lyrical Analysis of "Keep Driving"
I won’t lie, this is the one I have been the most excited yet the most terrified to do. It’s one of my favorite songs on Harry’s House—both for its creative artistry and for its loudness. Keep Driving is more than just a song; it’s a collection of snapshots, a stream-of-consciousness look at a relationship that is both deeply intimate and quietly fragile. At first listen, it feels like a list of disconnected images, but when you start piecing them together, a story emerges—one of love, nostalgia, longing, and the quiet fear that it could all fall apart.
For many listeners, this song feels random—a collection of phrases that don’t seem to connect. But when viewed through the lens of Harry’s history, especially his connection to Louis, the pieces start to fall into place. The references are oddly specific, and some of them are so pointedly linked to Louis that it raises the question:
Did Harry want us to know exactly who this was about?
He knows his lyrics will be dissected—why include such obvious clues?
Are we just finding connections that don’t exist, or is this song a carefully constructed puzzle for those paying attention?
And if so many of these lines can be explained with public-facing knowledge, is it possible that the others have meanings we just haven’t pieced together yet?
At a certain point, the number of connections starts to feel less like coincidence and more like intent. And with that in mind, let’s dive in.
If we analyze Harry’s House in reverse order, each song builds on the next, forming an emotional arc:
"Love of My Life" – Harry reflects on a love that changed everything for him. He lost it, but now has it again. This signals a reconciliation.
"Boyfriends" – He acknowledges that the relationship isn’t perfect. They’ve both made mistakes, but they always find their way back to each other.
"Satellite" – He’s finally ready to fully commit, but his partner isn’t quite ready to choose him publicly, completely. He’s waiting.
And now, we arrive at "Keep Driving."
This song is what happens after they’re back together. It’s domestic, fluffy, and filled with tiny moments that make up their life as a pair. But beneath the surface, there’s an unease, a tension—the recognition that things aren’t perfect, that there are problems lurking in the background, but instead of addressing them, they choose to just keep driving.
It’s not just about relationship struggles, though. There’s also a sense of blocking out the outside world. The world is chaotic, overwhelming, and sometimes the only thing you can do is shut it out and focus on the person you love.
Lyric Breakdown and Analysis
Black and white film camera
Harry has been into photography for years. He’s been seen using film cameras consistently, and black-and-white photography aligns with his nostalgic, artistic aesthetic. This is an image of capturing a moment, freezing time—an attempt to make something last forever.
Tumblr media
Yellow sunglasses
In September 2019, Harry was seen wearing a very distinctive pair of yellow sunglasses. Given the timeline of when this song was written, it’s reasonable to assume this is a reference to those.
Tumblr media
Ashtray, swimming pool
Harry doesn’t smoke, but Louis does. This line paints an image of their domestic life—possibly suggesting that Harry makes Louis smoke outside by the pool 😆
Hot Wax, jump off the roof
This is especially interesting because the official lyrics capitalize both "Hot" and "Wax," suggesting it’s not about literal candle wax but a proper noun—something specific. HotWax is a band that released singles like "Stay Cool" , "Pat the Killer Cat", and "Baked Beans" —all around the time this song was written.
Later, HotWax opened for Louis’ Away From Home Festival in 2023.
Tumblr media
Harry and Louis both seem to have taken an interest in this band, making this a subtle but meaningful connection.
A small concern with how the engine sounds
This is a metaphor for the relationship. The car = their love, their journey together. The engine making a weird noise suggests that something feels off, but it’s "just a small concern"—one they don’t want to dwell on.
We held darkness in withheld clouds
This is one of the most poetic lines in the song. "Held darkness" – They’ve been through pain, struggles, secrets. "Withheld clouds" – They’re keeping it back, not talking about it, holding back the storm. Instead of addressing what’s wrong, they’re choosing to suppress it—at least for now. They’re holding off all of the internal and external issues facing them so they can enjoy this moment.
I would ask, 'Should we just keep driving?'
This is the central question of the song. Do we stop and deal with everything? Or do we just keep going, keep pretending everything is fine, keep holding onto what we have for as long as we can?
Maple syrup, coffee Pancakes for two Hash brown, egg yolk I will always love you
This section is absolutely packed with meaning. Harry and Louis’ love for pancakes and maple syrup has been well-documented since the early One Direction days.
January 2011: Tweet from the official 1D account: "Hey everyone, me and Harry have just had pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast. Great way to start the day! Miss you all! Louis and Harry x"
Tumblr media
February 2012: Louis tweets: "Question is... Are they gonna serve pancakes at the Brits??"
Tumblr media
Louis has celebrated National Pancake Day multiple times (2013, 2016, 2018).
Tumblr media
One Direction Carpool Karaoke: In the aired version of the segment, we see Louis ordering food—a sausage McMuffin with egg, two hashbrowns, and a chocolate milkshake—while Harry only orders an iced tea. But in cut footage, Harry is later seen chewing while holding a hashbrown wrapper and drinking out of Louis’ chocolate shake. So, what does this mean? The implication is adorably domestic—Louis ordered for both of them, and they shared their food. It wasn’t even a big deal, just something natural between them. Now, let’s be real—why was this scene cut? Ben Winston (who directed the segment) has a history of editing out moments between Harry and Louis that could be seen as too "intimate" or "suggestive". If you were trying to minimize speculation about their relationship, this is exactly the kind of casual, boyfriend-coded moment you’d want to remove. It’s not about what they’re doing—it’s about how natural it looks. They don’t even think twice about sharing food, and that’s something couples do.
Tumblr media
youtube
This isn’t just about food—it’s about history, shared memories, small moments of love that add up over time. The final line, "I will always love you," is the most direct expression of love in HIS ENTIRE DISCOGRAPHY.
Passports in footwells
This immediately evokes the idea of traveling—whether by car or airplane. "Footwell" refers to the floorboard of a vehicle, meaning the image here is of passports casually tossed on the floor—perhaps from frequent travel, perhaps from rushing to leave.
But Harry’s most infamous “passport” moment ties back to his relationship with Taylor Swift—or rather, the stunt that was his relationship with Taylor Swift. On New Year’s Eve 2012, Harry was set to meet Taylor in NYC to ring in the new year. However, he "lost" his passport and was delayed getting there. Many fans believe this was intentional, a way to avoid the highly publicized (and later mocked) NYE kiss he was expected to have with Taylor on national television. When he did arrive, his body language was stiff and unenthusiastic, and the entire interaction felt awkward and forced. If this line is referring to that moment, it could be Harry subtly referencing the absolute mess of PR relationships, travel schedules, and forced narratives that dictated so much of his public life at the time.
Kiss her and don't tells
This line immediately follows the passport reference, which makes it even more likely that it’s about stunts and forced public relationships. "Kiss her" could refer to being told to perform affection for the cameras, particularly with Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, or other PR pairings over the years. "Don't tells" sounds very much like a play on "don't ask, don't tell", which could be a nod to secrecy, suppression, and the unspoken rules of the industry. Essentially, this could be about being told to kiss a woman for the press while simultaneously having to hide the truth about his real relationship.
Wine glass
Probably red 😜 Considering Louis’ red wine and ginger ale (I'll add the proof that that is what he drinks on my Little Freak analysis), referenced explicitly in Little Freak and the song Grapejuice where Harry sings about drinking “something old and red.” Essentially, red wine has been a recurring symbol in this album.
Puff pass
This is a direct reference to weed, a phrase commonly used when sharing a joint. Louis was caught on video smoking weed with Zayn back in the 1D days, and he has been open about his use of it since then. Harry, however, has never explicitly admitted to smoking, but there’s plenty of evidence that he’s familiar with it—most notably, a clip where he smells a fan’s weed from the stage and gives her a thumbs-up.
youtube
CUTE NOTE: Louis’ song "Silver Tongues" contains the lyrics: "You said grass was a dirty drug, you like to preach with the vodka in your mug." Which sounds very much like "wine glass, puff pass". This could easily be playful banter, hinting at conversations they’ve had about weed vs. alcohol.
Tea with cyborgs
This feels like one of the more obvious lines that One Direction fans would recognize—yet its inclusion in a deeply personal love song would be strange if it wasn’t about a member of the band.
Most likely, this is a reference to the One Direction “Drag Me Down” music video, where Harry is explicitly shown drinking tea with robots at NASA. The behind-the-scenes footage confirms it was tea, making this a direct and intentional reference.
Beyond the surface-level connection, this ties back to another song on Harry’s House—"Satellite", for which the music video was filmed at the same NASA facility. If you’re listening to the album in order, this reference foreshadows the next song, but if you’re following our reverse-album theory, it builds on the themes we've already seen.
The phrase “tea with cyborgs” also plays with the idea of something ordinary (drinking tea) clashing with something unnatural (robots, space, the artificiality of public personas). In the context of Keep Driving, it could symbolize the strangeness of their reality—where normal moments of intimacy exist alongside the surreal, highly publicized world they had to navigate.
Tumblr media
Riot America, science and edibles
This line is a perfect example of how Harry juxtaposes the chaos of the outside world with private, intimate moments of escape.
"Riot America" probably refers to the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, which erupted across the U.S. following the murder of George Floyd. Harry himself participated in the protests in Los Angeles, marching alongside others, holding up a Black Lives Matter sign, and later publicly donating to bail funds for arrested protesters. The inclusion of this reference shows that the weight of the world is very much present in the song—it’s not just about personal struggles, but the larger political and social issues surrounding them.
"Science and edibles" then immediately follows, shifting from something heavy and serious to something light and personal. It could reference deep conversations they’ve had about life, the universe, and everything in between—topics that Harry, in particular, has always been fascinated by (he’s spoken about his love for physics and space multiple times). "Edibles" suggests a moment of relaxation, perhaps a way of escaping from the intensity of everything happening around them.
This contrast—protests and politics vs. science and weed—reflects the theme of Keep Driving: blocking out the noise and focusing on the person next to you, even as the world outside feels like it’s on fire.
Life hacks going viral in the bathroom
This line likely references @/onlyjayus, a TikTok creator who became insanely popular during quarantine for sharing life hacks from their bathroom mirror. Many of these hacks were psychologically based, which is interesting because Louis has expressed a strong interest in psychology in various interviews.
In my mind, I love to picture Harry finding these videos on TikTok and showing them to Louis during their quiet, alone moments—because he knows Louis would enjoy them (but refuses to use Tiktok). It’s a small, intimate detail that adds to the song’s theme of private moments shared between two people.
Cocaine, side boob Choke her with a sea view
This is one of the most open-to-interpretation lines, but what’s clear is that it evokes a very specific LA, party-culture aesthetic—one of excess, indulgence, and luxury. Cocaine is often associated with Hollywood, wealth, and the high-profile party scene, which Harry has been adjacent to for years. This isn’t the first time he’s referenced cocaine on this album (Daylight: “You were just doing cocaine in my kitchen, you never listen”), suggesting that drug culture was present in his environment. Whether this line is about personal experience or simply an observation, it contributes to the hedonistic, reckless energy of this part of the song.
"Side boob" is a very specific kind of sexual imagery—it’s not just about nudity, but about a glimpse of something, a partial view. In the context of an LA party scene, it could reference fashion trends (revealing dresses, casual sensuality) or the hyper-sexualized nature of Hollywood. Alternatively, if we apply the song’s larger themes, it could symbolize something (or someone) being seen, but only partially.
"Choke her with a sea view" is perhaps the most ambiguous line, and it can be interpreted in multiple ways:
A BDSM reference – Harry has occasionally played with themes of power dynamics and submission in his lyrics and performances. If this song is personal, this line could be an allusion to a sexual preference or private dynamic. With a seaview, of course, referencing that this act is done in LA.
A metaphor for excess and suffocation – The imagery of choking juxtaposed with a sea view (something peaceful, luxurious, and desirable) could symbolize feeling overwhelmed despite being surrounded by beauty and privilege.
A commentary on LA culture – The idea of having everything—stunning views, wealth, luxury—but still feeling trapped or consumed by the lifestyle fits with the broader themes of escapism vs. reality in Harry’s House.
Toothache, bad move, just act normal
At first glance, "toothache" might seem completely random, but it actually lines up perfectly with a public event in Louis' life. In March 2021, Louis tweeted: "Hope everyone is alright! Had my wisdom teeth taken out recently, ruthless stuff! I'll be on in a few days, Sending you all love."
Tumblr media
The timing aligns with when Harry’s House was being written and recorded, making it very possible that this small, seemingly insignificant detail stuck with Harry enough to include it.
Then comes "bad move, just act normal." "Bad move" could refer to the pain or regret of getting his wisdom teeth out, but in the broader context of the song, it likely represents a larger mistake—something personal, perhaps even within their relationship. "Just act normal" is particularly interesting because it echoes a recurring theme in their history: pretending everything is fine, keeping up appearances, suppressing emotions. Whether it’s about stunts, PR relationships, or simply navigating their personal struggles in the public eye, this line suggests that instead of addressing things, the go-to response is to stay quiet, keep moving, and act like nothing’s wrong.
Moka pot Monday, it's all good
"Moka pot Monday"—a completely ordinary day, where they buy a moka pot and make coffee. "It's all good"—a moment of simple joy amidst all the noise. This contrast is so intentional—Harry is showing that, yes, there’s pain, mistakes, and the constant need to suppress emotions… but then there’s just a quiet Monday where they get a moka pot, and for a moment, everything feels okay. It perfectly encapsulates the theme of Keep Driving: the world is messy, the past is complicated, but instead of dwelling on it, they focus on the small, beautiful moments that make it all worth it.
Final Thoughts
"Keep Driving" is one of the most intimate and revealing tracks on Harry’s House. It doesn’t tell a linear story—instead, it feels like flipping through a scrapbook of memories, a mix of everyday moments and lingering anxieties. At its core, the song is about love, domesticity, and escapism—but not just in a romanticized way. There’s a deliberate tension woven throughout the lyrics, a sense that things aren’t perfect, but instead of stopping to fix them, they choose to keep going.
Harry has spent his solo career carefully navigating his public image, giving just enough for people to speculate but never confirming anything outright. But Keep Driving feels different—like a song written for someone who already knows exactly what it means. Harry is not subtle in this song. While much of his music is poetic and open to interpretation, Keep Driving is filled with strikingly specific details that seem impossible to ignore.
Beyond just Harry’s personal story, Keep Driving speaks to a universal experience—the feeling of wanting to block out the chaos of the world and just focus on someone you love. The juxtaposition of political turmoil ("Riot America") with quiet, intimate moments ("Moka pot Monday") mirrors the way people cope with uncertainty. The world is falling apart, but maybe if you just keep driving, keep moving forward, keep focusing on the small joys, it’ll be okay.
That’s why this song resonates so deeply—it isn’t just about who it’s about, but what it’s about: Love that persists despite challenges, Avoiding confrontation, choosing escapism instead, Finding comfort in small, mundane moments.
Keep Driving is a song that looks simple on the surface but becomes more profound the deeper you dig. It’s a love song, yes, but it’s also a song about choosing to keep going, even when things aren’t perfect. For Harry, it might be his way of documenting a love that has spanned years, survived hardships, and still exists in quiet moments like pancakes for two and moka pot Mondays. For listeners, it’s a reminder that sometimes, you don’t have to have all the answers. Sometimes, you just keep driving.
