--- Years had ticked by, meticulously slow but rather enjoyable for the most part. A roller coaster of emotions and a whirlwind of activities- tangles of fingers and companionship; bruising kisses and tender touches, an intimacy shared between them that few others might have known. That's what happened when you fell in love with someone, plucking their company from fairy tales and romance stories of old- ones the djinn had seen happen in the flesh, from time to time.

--- He wasn't against falling in love himself, never had been, in fact it was a romantic notion and one he often fantasized about. Whenever opportunity arose and lovers presented themselves, he took no shame in spending time with them, years if need be though...inevitably he was pulled away. Through life, or death, his diligence and duty to purpose and commitment to his job seemed to put a wedge between him and ay true, lasting happiness.

--- Even now as the djinn lay in a tangle of silken sheets and embroidered pillows, sun high in the sky and peeking through the window to highlight his lovers body amid the mess of it all, a soft smile pulled at his lips. Ignis. Perhaps one he'd come to care for more than most. More than...any, that he could currently recall, though years were lasting and lasting still; despite that, every moment with the immortal was cherished.

--- For a time, Mordecai had entertained hope that this was something that might last, what they had between them...that it was something that would traverse centuries, with shared kisses and shared travels, hand in hand, but. As fate would have it, it was doomed from the start- for as much as he truly loved Ignis with the entirety of his heart, they both knew that this was it. After the fight last night, if it could be called that as Mordecai had simply laid out the nature of things and they'd both fallen to melancholic silence for a time...before Ignis had lashed out.

--- He'd expected the aggression of course, understood it even and didn't begrudge his lover that in the least. It was after the aggression when the true pain hit, when realization had dawned on the Hound of Hell, that it didn't matter what futile arguments he broke upon angel's ears, they were deaf to it. It didn't matter how much Mordecai loved Ignis, how much he cherished him, cared for him, they could have spent a lifetime together and the fact remained...

--- ...Heaven came first, always. His duty to the above, in shepherding righteous soul, often pulled him away from his partner- anywhere from days, to weeks at a time, they were separated. Ignis wanted to settle down, to get comfortable and live a domestic life together, but the djinn's nature was...transient. He traveled, often and far, and ultimately their ideals didn't mesh though despite that, they had found love in one another for such a time. Comfort and devotion.

--- ' There's...nothing I can say, or do? That'll...change your mind, is there? ' the elder had asked of him when it all came down to it, sitting in the bed at the end of the night, head in his hands and tears welling at the corners of eyes.

--- Kneeling before the taller, pressed between legs, djinn cupped the Grecian's face in his hands and offered a soft and sweet smile, filled with love as golden orbs met rubies. ' It isn't my mind that needs changing, Ignis. If I could spend every day among these silks and furs with you I would, but such was not our fate from the start. I am duty bound to honor my position, regardless of the love I bear in my heart and soul for you. ' he whispered the thickly accented words, lips meeting the hound's forehead preciously.

--- They...spent the entire night together. In one another's arms, memorizing the lines of each others bodies all over again and committing hearts together, for all the time they had left and all the time they'd had together up to this point. When morning came...when topaz gems settled upon the others freshly stirring form, a pang of guilt and pain settled in his chest and sad smile pulled at his lips.

--- ' Don't...don't go. Not yet. Not without a goodbye...or at all! ' he'd asked quietly, sleepy gaze lifted pleadingly. It was then that Mordecai sat upon the bed once more, pressing forehead's together, brushing noses...and finally connecting their lips. It started soft, sweet, full of emotion...and then bore into something deeper and breathless. A promise and an apology wrapped up in unspoken words and a tangle of tongues- he could feel salted tears hit his cheeks from lovers eyes, but they dried almost as soon as he'd felt them. When they finally parted for breath after what felt like minutes of being underwater? The djinn stood and brushed a hand through Ignis' hair.

--- ' 'Uhibuka, Ignis. Goodbye. '
