What has she always meant to do, but never done?

Nahi laid back on one of the lounge chairs she had bought at a second hand store on her porch, letting the sun warm her skin. The beading of the condensation on the water glass next to her marking the top of the small marble table, the drink forgotten as she read through a score, softly humming the song, the lift of her voice then tumbling down over a river rapid presentation into a slow, calm scene ending. 

It was an opera her mother’s pianist had arranged for the Diva, really it wasn’t much of an opera as much as it was a showcase for her voice.  That didn’t stop it from being  a lovely piece, one that she had often dreamed of performing on a large stage, one like the one that had been assembled on the estate of the Viscountess Runewhisper, patron of the arts.  

She had avoided all talk about performing opera when she was in Dalaran, it has been mentioned once or twice but she waved the thought away. That was when she was actively trying to conceal that her mother and her had survived Tempest Keep, protecting her mother from her uncle that would be happy to take advantage of the heir to the estate and the money from her performing, her mother was just to vulnerable to suggestion and it had taken time for her father to be declared dead so Nahi could put protective measures into effect and becoming her mother’s power of attorney and split guardianship with Irenthalas.

Now though? What was stopping her really? Soon people would know she was back, if they even cared, her House was so decimated by at least two generations of mismanagement that it was more of a money sink than anything. If she didn’t want control of the situation she had put into place to continue to protect her mother, she might never have come forth at all and just let the estate be taken for lack of payment of taxes, or just bequeath it to her cousin. The title meant nothing to her, she had stepped out of being Lady Summerhold, before she had taken the mantle of The Silver Banshee nonsense that Fredrick suggested for her stage name back when she had no idea how to find work in clubs. 

It was the comparison that left hesitation among her thoughts, she was the daughter of the Diva and that meant the moment she attempted anything related to her mother’s performances they would start. Then doubt began to seep in, she was never professionally trained, had only been singing for a little over fifteen years. Could she do the piece justice? 

Maybe opera could wait for a little while longer.

I don't know why this little moment of her just tossing the popcorn at Shadow and playing oblivious when he just looks over with a "Did you just?" kind of expression sticks with me so much, but I think about it constantly 😄

Something I realised about the situation with Maria in Sonic 3.

Yes, she isn't said to be terminally ill, or Shadow being born to cure her, which is a huge departure from the games. But I'd say it still maintains nearly the same level of tragedy.

She was able to walk around, interact with people. Be silly, be active, tie a rope to Shadow and get him to pull her around on her own roller skates.

She was able to go outside, and see Earth in all its beauty. The stars, the sky, the moon. She was able to lie down in the grass with her brother and comfort him about his own insecurities.

Maria Robotnik was a child full of life, with a life to look forward to.

And that was taken from her.

Sonic 3, all it does, is change the tragedy from 'she was never going to live long' to 'she was able to have a long life and it was stolen from her in cruelty and unfairly'.

That's the injustice that drives Shadow in Sonic 3.

Maria Robotnik should have lived a long and good life. Gone to school, got a career, changed the world with Shadow at her side.

Instead, because of the cruelty of the military, she lost it all and will never be able to have that life.
