why is canon so inconsistent abt how azula addresses ozai. like at certain points she says father and others she says dad. that’s not a natural dichotomy of addressments.
which makes me think that w family and her friends azula is probably more honest now that she’s older abt what her relationship w her father is like (a little more emotionally distant, more respect is expected of her now she’s 14 and thus too old to call him just dad) and ppl she’s essentially strangers w are ppl she lies to.

i've been doing research to figure out a good name for zuko's ship and i FOUND one!! after like an hour and a half of looking up chinese ship naming conventions and finding and scrolling through the wikipedia page for a list of ships of the chinese navy, i found the perfect one! yangwei (揚威 - traditional chinese; trans. "show of force") was a ship in the imperial chinese navy active from 1881-1894. the whole "show of force" thing is very zuko, very fire nation. BUT the thing that sealed the deal for me was discovering that while yangwei is pronounced yáng wēi for this meaning, if pronounced with the different intonation of yáng wěi, it can mean "impotence". the fact that zuko was assigned his own ship that was outdated was already insulting, but if he was given a ship that, while having different characters than "impotent", could sound similar to that?? ough, that's too good to pass up
#len speaks#MAJOR disclaimer that i only speak english and french so the impotence bit could be wrong! i discovered that when scrolling thu a quora#post asking how people could name their children yang wei when it sounds so similar to impotence. also the impotence bit i believe is only#common when dealing with simplfied chinese rather than traditional but considering both traditional and simplified characters are used in#the show i think it still fits? i could be COMPLETELY off base with this but even if i am i still think show of force sounds cool too. also#i'm well aware there's already a cool fanon name for his ship but i wanted to put my own spin on it :^)
