Something I've noticed lately is that every time I go to the doctor and they ask how long I've been on testosterone, they are always surprised when I say ~6 years, like in a way that suggests they don't interact with people who've been on t that long, and I'm just so??? What? Do transmascs not ever visit the doctor after just starting t? Where are the longer term t users and why am I one of the first ones in this establishment
#this has happened with like almost 10 different doctors in multiple different locations like this is a Pattern#including planned parenthood btw#in a relatively safe city to be trans mind you#so it's not like these doctors have never interacted w trans patients#and in fact a few have specifically stated theyve worked with many trans patients#so the shock at six years is very confusing to me#it doesn't feel like that long#and theyre always like “oh wow so a *really* long time then”#???????#anyway I'm getting my uterus out next week and its a little fucked up from t and my doc said shes seen this in ppl on t for a long time#and again im like. is 6 years a long time.#excuse me?#what do you meeaaaannnnnn#6 years is not long

hitting you with thos Prime Numbers
up in the fuckin' Ridorana Lighthouse over here. Aight Construct 7, here's the list!
Do you like to use the term queer for yourself? Or just LGBT, etc? I mostly just refer to myself as Queer! Just one of those easy umbrella terms lmao
Which pronouns do you use? she/her! I don't mind terribly when i get misgendered by close friends and relatives, esp since theyre used to other pronouns, and i havent been out that long to them.
Are you "out" publicly? more or less. im not out at my workplace, but i found out a co-worker is trans also, so its kinda nice to have someone at a place like work know, even if im not totally out to them. gonna be interesting once I Suddenly Start Having Tiddy tho.
Are you the "token" queer person in your family? oh 110%. every other family member i know is like almost comically straight. i am The Weird Bisexual Cousin Who Is Also A Girl I Think?
Favorite (or just one you love) piece of LGBT media? i honestly dont know of many (pls send recs im begging).
Do you choose to reclaim slurs, why or why not? not really?. i dont have strong opinions on it tbh, it really depends on who its coming from. if Hank in the lifted pickup truck, whos truck has seen more car washes than mud calls me a fag, im ready to throw hands. If my genderqueer friend calls me a fag, i know it comes from a point of respect and comedy. really just depends on the context i suppose.
Have you ever attended Pride in a big city/ large metro area? Yes!!! the first year i moved to where i live now (austin tx),l i went to my first pride event (it was a big parade!!) at like 25. moved from deep southern georgia (which didnt like My Type very much). Bought my first bi pride flag there, and its still up proudly on my wall to this day! :)
Do you feel safe and accepted in your local community? yeah, ish? i dont really interact with like the local community much. I do enjoy being like, a Total Queer at my work tho. ( I work at chick-fil-a, and like half the staff are queer lol)
Do you prefer loud parties or quiet? depends if someone has bud or not if im being honest. just vegging out with people watching dumb youtube vides is a whole vibe that i dig
Are you currently partnered, or if not are you interested in having partner(s)? i am horrendously single. i wanna go out for dates, but the whole "trans woman who doesnt pass unless they have 6 different layers of clothing and also a mask and makeup" makes it pretty hard.
Post a pic in your pride gear (or it can just be a selfie or anything else lgbt): FOLLOWUP POST INCOMING I GOT HAND-ME-DOWNS AND ITS REALLY CUTE!!!!!!

At Alter’s End: A CYOA Novel
Overview:
Trentworth, Maine. A town of ten thousand southeast of Ellsworth and North of Bayside. Its only bragging point since its conception in 1867 was being a shoreline city and cheaper than any of the other big tourist towns. Nothing ever happened here, besides the occasional drowning or fishing trip accident, until the killings started. They lasted five years in total and 48 people were lost to the killer’s sick desires. Robert Hall terrorized this small town, slipping under the radar by focusing on those considered “undesirable”; sex workers, orphans, drug addicts, and the like. Now ten years later, ten years after the killer has been put behind bars, murders have begun again. A copycat killer has come to Trentworth. And they seem to be targeting the ones left behind, still trying to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives…
You take the role of a highschool senior; your parents having died in a home fire shortly before the killer was put behind bars and now under the care of your workaholic aunt. Make allies of your classmates or attempt to go it alone, clear your parents’ name from their believed involvement with the killer or fight to put the past behind you, deal with the skeletons in your closet and mind or bury them deeper... Oh, and make sure your history project is turned in on time. With two young siblings depending on you and a whole host of problems a highschool student should never have to deal with, can you survive this nightmare made real?
Trigger Warnings: This game will go into very heavy topics including the following; murder, death, various mental health issues (such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety), abandonment, gambling, various types of drug addiction, self harm mentions (not happening to the MC or shown in graphic detail), suicide, sex work, child abuse (mental, emotional, and physical), and dangerous situations. This is a murder mystery/thriller, it is NOT intended for audiences below 18.
Hello! Thank you for showing interest in At Alter’s End. This is a Choose Your Own Adventure style novel in the Thriller and Murder Mystery genres. It would also fit nicely in the Drama genre as well, but Drama is not the focus. This will be a rather lengthy project, with fifteen chapters plus a prologue and epilogue planned.
You take on the role of a senior at Trentworth High. Join an after-school activity, take care of your younger siblings, prepare for finals, get a part time job, find a date to homecoming, and survive your worst nightmare come to life. The copycat killer is targeting the students of your school and no one is safe. With the police dragging their feet, no help coming any time soon from any higher up law enforcement, and the locals refusing to acknowledge the possibility of a copycat killer, it’s up to you and your classmates to find the person responsible...before it’s too late.
- You can play as female, male, nonbinary, or trans!
- You can be straight, gay, or bisexual!
- A highly customizable MC including hair color, eye color, skin color, hair length, height, and personality and interests!
- The ability to choose which mental illness the MC suffers from due to the trauma of their past from the following:
Anxiety, Depression, or PTSD.
- The MC is deaf in their right ear ear due to the way in which their parents died; this is not something that can be changed.
- Choose from 7 different official after-school activities! Trentworth Volunteers, Up and Coming Artists, National Debate Society, National Honors Society, Co-Ed Varsity Basketball, Creative Writing, and Trentworth Gardeners!
- Bond with your classmates, explore your town, and help raise your younger siblings!
- Rescue your parents’ bakery from corporate clutches or let it go!
- Find the killer, stop the murders, and put a stop to the rumors that have plagued your every step for 10 years!
Vanya: Oldest adoptive twin sibling to MC’s adoptive siblings, 6 years younger than MC. Strong-headed, intelligent, and always getting into trouble. She looks after her brother and MC in the ways she can.
Ajay: Youngest adoptive twin sibling to MC’s adoptive sibling, 6 years younger than MC. Nearly completely blind since birth, he enjoys painting and other artistic endeavors. Obedient yet opinionated.
Aunt Emma: The workaholic aunt that takes custody of MC and their younger siblings after the death of their parents. Well meaning but absent most of the time on business trips or at the office.
Kwan Hall: An adoptive relative to Robert Hall; aloof, intelligent, and completely ostracized by Trentworth as a whole. When the killings start again the town’s attention is immediately turned on Kwan. He’s the first to begin investigating the killings when the police prove their incompetence. He is of Korean descent, standing at 5’6” with dark hair and dark eyes. His most notable feature is the long scar that stretches from his forehead’s hairline, down his left temple, and ends just below his jawline and the constant disinterest on his face. He is asexual in that he doesn’t experience sexual attraction at all. He is also bisexual.
Alessia D’Agostina: Trentworth High’s school president. She’s clawed her way tooth and nail up to earn the respect of both the school faculty and her fellow classmates; she’s strong-willed, dependable, and always looks at things through a logical lens. When she sees her classmates dying, she takes it upon herself to try and stop this once and for all. With dark skin, deep brown eyes, long braided hair, and standing at 5’8” her confidence and sense of self always make sure she stands out from the crowd. Alessia is bisexual.
Georgiy Kuzmin: Twin brother to Anastasiya Kuzmin; he is, in the kindest way possible, not the brightest bulb in the box. Yet he always means well and is more than willing to offer a helping hand. As the co-captain of the basketball team, captain of the baseball team, and the star of the swim team, Georgiy is one of the most popular and well beloved students at Trentworth High. When he realizes his friends are in danger, he willingly throws himself into the investigation to do all he can to help. With fair skin, dirty blond hair, bubbly green eyes, and standing at 6’1” he cuts an approachable figure to anyone who knows him. Georgiy is gay.
Anastasiya Kuzmin: Twin sister to Georgiy Kuzmin: she and her brother are alike in so many ways apart from just appearance. Anastasiya, who goes by Ana more often than not, is head of the Co-Ed Varsity Basketball team, the Girls’ softball team, and the Tennis team. Just as popular and loved as her brother, Ana may not be the smartest but she makes up for it with passion and dedication. Like her brother, she has fairer skin, dirty blond hair, and bright green eyes. Also like her brother, she felt she couldn’t just sit around while her friends were put in danger and agreed to join the investigation. Ana is gay and demiromantic, meaning she only gains feelings for someone after having a strong relationship with them.
Lillian Triano: A quiet, withdrawn girl who mainly keeps to herself. Due to the fact that Trentworth High demands for every senior to be apart of an elective, she is mainly seen in afterschool reading club run by Ms. Habeeb. She’s MC’s closest friend, having been one of the only people who didn’t believe the rumors that MC’s parents were assisting Robert Hall in his murders. She has an olive complexion, brown eyes, a heavy dose of freckles, and stands at 5’1”. Lillian is gay.
Jasmine Abernathy: Jasmine is Trentworth High’s self proclaimed “Best news source!” After the school newspaper was disbanded, Jasmine took it upon herself to keep freedom of the press alive. She’s fierce in her pursuit of the truth and never one to back down from a fight, though her rash attitude can get her into some sticky situations on occasion. With vibrant red hair, dark brown eyes, and standing at 5’3” she puts the term “fire” in Fire Signs. (She’s an Aries in astrology!) When the copycat killings began, it was no surprise when she took the case head on. Jasmine is bisexual.
Asa San Nicholas: Asa is the oldest of a set of triplets; they’re the type to march to the beat of their own drum, often not listening to what anyone has to say about themselves or their interests. Asa is a firm believer in the paranormal and it isn’t uncommon to find them indulging in their interest in various ways. “The spirits are distrubed. These deaths aren’t meant to happen.” Asa’s reason for getting involved seems to tie directly back to their “connection” with the spirits of the town. Asa has black hair, most often tied in a ponytail, hazel eyes, and an olive skin tone. At 6’4” they tower over most everyone...something they seem to enjoy a great deal. Asa doesn’t see gender and is interested in people regardless of how they present.
Leo San Nicholas: The middle of the triplets. They are genderfluid, okay with any pronouns. Leo is, for lack of a better word, eccentric. A bit of an adrenaline junkie, you can often find them cliff diving or giving their siblings heart attacks by playing russian roulette with a chocolate gun. To them, it isn’t fun if there isn’t a little danger involved; naturally, an investigation into a serial killer scratches that itch quite nicely. Their black hair is clipped short, multiple piercings visible on each ear, and their heterochromatic hazel and green eyes are often stated to stare through a person. Although Leo is genderfluid, they are only interested in people who present as female.
The demo is upcoming! When it is available I will make a post announcing it! I will also update this post with the link! This game is written in choicescript; the demo will be published on Dashingdon and the final game will be published for free on itch.io. I am open for questions regarding this game/novel and once the demo is published I will also be publishing a link to my Ko-fi! Until then, please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions!

okay well anyways somebody asked me if i felt like talking about my raccoon city survivors au with mia and ethan again and the answer is YES.
> AU MINI FACTS <
- Ethan's mother died while giving birth.
- Ethan Winters and his father moved into Raccoon City when Ethan was a baby, around 3-4 years old.
- Ethan trans ftm because im trans and i said so.
- Mia trans mtf because im trans and i said so.
- Ethan & Mia are childhood friend to lovers in this au.
- Ethan's father worked for Umbrella, and Mia's father worked for the Connections while her mother also worked for Umbrella.
- Mia was born in Texas, but her family moved to Raccoon City after she was born. They still owned property in Texas, though.
- Mia & Carlos are related because I said so.
- so yknow the "dude its been three years" guy? that's their childhood friend and his name is Kyde because i said so.
- Albert Wesker Personally was ordered by Spencer to kill those scientists btw.
- a lot of this au is because i said so tbh
> AU SUMMARY <
Ethan Winters, Mia Oliviera, and Kyde Wells work together to survive six days of the Raccoon City Outbreak. In the process they uncover secrets and encounter many obstacles that just nearly cost them their lives.
> CHAR.BGROUND <
ETHAN W, SR - A scientist who worked for Umbrella. He lost his wife during the birth of his child E///// Winters. Struggling with the death of his wife and the harsh decline of his mental health, he began to experiment with viruses and vaccines in an attempt to bring his wife back, even using his child as a subject at certain points due to the child having strong genes from the mother. He acknowledged that he was a horrid father, but justified his actions by claiming he would bring back a better mother. He thought of Albert Wesker as a friend, and told him the truth of his research.
ETHAN W, JR - A quiet 14 year old that had a hard time making friends. Due to experiments from his father, Ethan is a culmination of infections and viruses that each impact him in different ways. As he grew up Ethan refrained from talking too much as to not interrupt his father's work, causing him to become selectively mute.
MIA OLIVIERA - Younger sister of Carlos Oliviera. Mia skipped a grade due to her intelligence and advanced knowledge on many things kids her age normally didn't. She very easily got sick as a child, though she seemed to outgrow it as she got older. She was schooled both at home and at school before the outbreak. She shared classes with Ethan Winters (Jr) and Kyde Wells.
KYDE WELLS - A friend of Ethan & Mia, known for his cowardice. Kyde has a heavy sense of self preservation, but a weighted sense of compassion as well. He only ever has risked himself for his two friends.
JAMES HARISON - Mia's father. He worked for the Connections as a scientist and a researcher. Harison and his wife often exchanged information they learned from their jobs, aiming to and succeeding at "fixing" their daughter's proneness to viral sicknesses.
MARISA OLIVIERA - Mia's mother. He worked for Umbrella as a researcher. Oliviera and her husband often exchanged information they learned from their jobs, aiming to and succeeding at "fixing" their daughter's proneness to viral sicknesses.
JAKE VERANO - An Umbrella worker who had been trapped in the underground facility for a week, listening to the sound of his coworkers being eaten alive. Unstable because of his experience, he tries to create a cure using the intel of Ethan W (SR).
> FULL AU <
[September, 25, 1998.]
Ethan Winters walked home from school when his father failed to pick him up. He walked through the streets, paying no mind to a big fight breaking out near him. On the way home, he meets up with his friend Kyde who had also been walking home. They talk and walk together for a bit, before splitting up.
When Ethan arrived home, he noticed the front door of his house had been opened slightly. Confused, but wary, he entered the house, knowing it was uncharacteristic for his father to forget the door was open.
He entered the living room, and found his father laying on the ground dead, shot twice in the head, having just been killed moments prior. Ethan moved over to his father, before Albert Wesker walked out of his father's office.
Ethan barely has much time to react to him, overwhelmed by his own panic and the death of the only adult in his life. Wesker - wanting no witnesses - shoots him three times in the chest, and leaves under the impression the child is dead for good.
Ethan Winters dies for the first time that evening.
[September, 27, 1998]
For the past two days, Mia and her parents have been barricaded in their home, unable to leave safely. Mia sat in her room for most of the time, unable to look out of the windows due to boards covering them. During those two days Mia tries to call Ethan and Kyde several times in hopes that they were safe. Neither of them answer.
Until this day, the 27th, at 2:00 am, when she calls Ethan. And he answers.
{TRANSCRIPT OF THEIR CALL:}
Ethan: h-hello?
Mia: [Ethan]! You're alive! Are you okay?
Ethan: I'm breathing. [Pause] I'm breathing. You okay?
Mia: I'm boarded up in my house, we can't leave safely. Everything is a mess. I'm so glad you're alive, [Ethan]. Are you safe? I'm guessing you're safe.
Ethan: Not sure. Not sure. Find you soon, here alone. Alone.
Mia: Alone? What happened? Where's your dad?
Ethan: [Pause.] [Loud sound in the distance.]
Mia: [Ethan]? Are you okay?
Ethan: [Dial tone.]
Mia speaks with her parents about the call, expressing worry about her friend. She spends a while trying to convince her parents that Ethan may be alive (purposefully omitting the dial tone) and need their help. Finally, they agree, and at 12 pm, they head out with all the resources they could gather.
Managing to stay out of sight, the family make it to the Winters' household. They find Ethan hiding in his bedroom, one infected laying in the hallway with a pole through its head and Ethan's father laying in the living room dead.
They rescue Ethan, and flee from the house. Mia's parents explain that they need to evacuate the city, but that they wouldn't be able to drive, so they'd have to move on foot. They returned to their house and rested for the night.
[September, 28, 1998]
The family and Ethan head out again, this time aiming to evacuate the city. After several close encounters with large groups of infected, the kids and Mia's parents are unfortunately separated. Given instructions by her parents, Mia leads Ethan through the city, having to take detours due to infected blocking pathways.
Eventually, during the night, they run into Kyde, who has lost his parents trying to escape the city. The three of them take refuge in an empty abandoned house, and rest for the walk in the morning.
Ethan sits up for a while, thinking about what happened to him, and trying to figure out how to explain it to his friends. Eventually he falls asleep, unable to figure it out. In the morning they head out again.
[September, 29-30, 1998]
During another detour taken due to large groups of infected, Ethan is kidnapped by a man in a white lab coat.
Mia & Kyde go after them, refusing to leave Ethan behind. They manage to find him after roughly half a day had passed.
Ethan had been in a hysterical state and through tears he explains to Mia and Kyde what had happened to him in his house a few days ago, confessing that he had died and revived two days later. He warns the two of them that whatever Jake, the white lab coat man, did to him, it made him dangerous and unstable.
Mia and Kyde refused again to leave him behind, and spend hours gathering information from files and research left scattered around. They manage to make Something that was able to calm him down and cleanse what they had learned had been called the "T-virus" from his body.
As soon as Ethan had woken up again, they fleed the facility, Mia & Kyde both making sure he didn't collapse on the way.
[October, 1, 1998]
They don't stop running when they're out. A broadcast goes out saying that the city will be blown up in four hours due to being unable to contain the outbreak. The three of them realize they won't be able to get out if they take anymore detours unless they find a vehicle with gas in it and a clear road to drive on.
Three hours later, out of options, nearly to the city boarder, and faced with another group of infected blocking the only straight shot out, they decide to risk a run through. However, just as they were pushing through, a helicopter flew overhead and spotted them. Calling to them, the pilot tells them to attempt making it up a building nearby if they could.
Through pure bullshittery and luck, they manage to make it up, and they board the helicopter. Just as it begins to take flight, the city starts to blow up bit by bit. In the distance, they see other helicopters flying.
> AFTER THE AU <
Mia and her parents reunite, her parents having managed to get out before the children did. Kyde goes to live with his relatives in Texas, and Ethan is offered to live with them as well.
Mia's parents move back to their texas home, and everyone who had been in the city were given therapy. Eventually the three grow up and graduate from highschool, and move on to other things, never once separating.
The three of them eventually move into a single house together in California, and some time after that Mia and Ethan get married. And for a while they live happily
And then, Mia witnesses Ethan having some sort of attack in the middle of the night one time, and realizes that he hadn't been completely cured of whatever had been infecting him in the city at all, and that it had only gone dormant for some years. While he wasn't vicious or attacking anyone, Ethan had just been really plagued and didn't even remember the fits that only seemed to happen every other night.
Out of worry and fear, Mia begins to work for the Connections, hoping there was something she could learn from them in order to help her husband finally be cured. And years after, RE7 began.
And THAT, my friends, is my Raccoon City Survivors au with the Winters, also known as Raccoon City Winters.

Title: nothing to mourn or miss Ship: Poker pair Summary: The only thing connecting little Cornelia Walker to Tyki Mikk was the mop of dark hair. A year after his Master's letter had been sent to the Black Order, Allen Walker arrived at their Headquarters, carrying a newborn on his back. AN: I just want trans Allen fanfics. Let’s see where this fanfic will go!
Lavi’s greatest gift had always been his observation skills. Growing up on the streets (in a different city, under another name), he’d had to be clever and aware to ensure he wouldn’t starve to death or be killed. Bookman, of course, had taken the ability to a whole new level, ensuring that Lavi wouldn’t miss even a single detail. Lavi was pretty sure that if there was a way to keep from blinking for the rest of his life, Bookman would force him to learn that as well.
Regardless, his skill was why he knew Krory had to be in the next train wagon. It was the last possible option, given that the vampiric Exorcist hadn’t been in any of the others. The situation, once they found him, was pretty easy to break down. He’d gotten cheated out of his clothes and money by three traveling vagabonds and a sickly-looking child; tuberculosis if Lavi were to guess. They looked rough as if the gentleness was seldom shown to them. From their hands and posture, Lavi deduced they worked in the mines or a similar taxing job.
That was as far as Lavi got with his observation before another one took him by surprise.
“Allen!” the boy shouted and promptly threw himself at said young man.
Here was the thing about Allen Walker: He was lithe in build, small, but he knew how to present himself. Lavi looked at him and knew what he kept hidden, yet it was not a lie because everything about Allen Walker screamed that he was a young man. He’d never said a word about whether he’d learned from his deceased father or his Master, but Allen knew how to navigate society, which social cues to react to or ignore.
Allen often kept people at a distance to keep up appearances and live his life as he wanted. Lavi, personally, was a massive fan of invading people’s personal space. He’d learned to do so early for various reasons, and with time passing, Allen started to allow Lavi in his bubble. But always, he was careful, hesitating, bracing himself for interaction.
And yet, somehow, this protection was disregarded without a second thought. Allen wasn’t taken aback by the boy jumping him but reacted on instinct and caught the boy. Were the child smaller, Lavi would think it was because of Cornelia, but no, the boy was much older than Allen’s daughter.
And here it was, the second clue:
“Eeez!” Allen said. “What are you doing here?”
“Traveling to a new job!” Eeez replied in rapid-fire Portuguese that, had Lavi not spent a year in the country, he wouldn’t have been able to understand a word. “You’re pretty far from your usual roads,” Allen replied only and set the boy down again. “But I see, your cheating habits haven’t changed at all.”
“You’ve always been the worst cheat,” the man towards the right replied, causing the one on the outmost left to laugh in agreement.
The two seemed good-natured if a little tired. They were comfortable around Allen, studied him briefly as if to check he was doing well, eating enough or so. Anyone who knew Allen well enough to greet him so heartedly had to be aware of his metabolism and with this group struggling for money, it was no surprise they worried about food.
But it wasn’t quite the two men or the boy that drew Lavi’s attention.
No, it was the man in the middle.
Thick glasses obscured his eyes, but his hair was curly and dark, the kind that Lavi knew from experience was fun to run your hand through.
How well exactly did Allen Walker know this man and how much did he care to keep such large secrets?
“Are you going to join us, menino?” the man asked. “Your friend has lost a few things, I believe.”
Allen grinned triumphantly, but his hand twitched all the same, betraying his lie. He was nervous, shaken by this confrontation, and were he anyone else, words about little princesses in high towers, bright gray eyes looking up from the Branch Chief’s lap, and bets on milestones would soon spill out of his mouth.
“Allen,” Krory finally spoke up, still sniffling. “Do you know these men?”
“Yes,” Allen replied, shaking himself from stupor. “We traveled together for a while after Master Cross had dumped me. They’re friends.”
Just friends? Lavi wondered. From the looks of it, he was not the only one. The boy, Eeze, narrowed his eyes, glancing between Tyki and Allen. Whatever they had, it hadn’t been that casual. The result was currently crawling around HQ, after all.
“This is Momo, Crack, and Glasses in the middle—”
“You wound me.”
“Is Tyki Mikk.”
Tyki was not a name whose origin Lavi could place easily. He’d assumed that Cornelia had been picked because it was a fairly common British name and sounded well with the small family’s last name.
Cornelia Walker wasn’t even a year old yet, and thus Lavi quietly found himself doing the math. Cross’s letter had announced only Allen’s arrival and been dated about a year before Allen had actually managed to arrive at the Order. He knew that Lenalee thought Allen had been sent to the Order because of Cornelia, so she’d be safe while Allen killed Akuma.
Never mind that nobody expected Cross to be a capable guardian for a newborn. People had been fascinated enough with the fact he’d managed to raise a teenager.
The only thing connecting little Cornelia to Tyki Mikk was the mop of dark hair. Otherwise, she was entirely Allen’s baby, from the pale complexion to the eyes and… Before meeting this Tyki, Lavi had assumed that she had Allen’s nose, but it actually resembled Tyki’s more closely. Still following through with his conclusions, Lavi pretended to be shocked at Allen’s gambling skills, the way he won back Krory’s clothes and dignity before stripping his old friends of theirs.
“Royal Straight Flush,” Allen announced once more with a smile as the others tossed their cards, not at all angry, more amused.
“They’re used to this,” Eeez said, this time in English. It was accentuated but still pretty good. Lavi could hear the same kind of pitter-patter pronunciation Allen sometimes fell back on when he was careless or exhausted. He must have taught the boy how to speak the language. How curious, it spoke for longer exposure to Allen. This definitely added to Lavi’s growing suspicion that Allen hadn’t just taken the long way round to the Order.
As did the fond glances Allen couldn’t keep off his face.
He could have stayed with this group. They were obviously aware of Allen’s status, but they seemed to have no trouble with it. Without needing to pay off his Master’s debt, Allen could earn enough to settle down somewhere. If they stayed near a mining town, the group wouldn’t even have to break up or work in a different branch.
There’d be no little niece for Komui to fuss over or dress up in her father’s absence. The Order would have remained entirely unaware of Allen Walker’s presence until someday along the way, somebody would dig out the one letter Cross had hurriedly written. And by then, they’d have assumed that Allen Walker had died on his way to the Order. Despite the tension of Allen’s shoulder, he was obviously at ease with this group, was at home, whereas he still hadn’t settled completely at the Order.
He could have abandoned the Akuma for them, this odd broken little family, but he hadn’t. The Destroyer of Time had marched on, wrapped his new gift up in cuddly blankets and climbed up a mountain.
Perhaps Lavi should tell him of the Order’s gruesome history, its horrible present. Would the boy have chosen to take his daughter there if he knew what lingered behind the black walls? Lavi had no doubt that if someone else sat in Komui’s office, little Cornelia would be tested weekly for resonance with an Innocence piece given that her father was an Accommodator. Then again, that doll that acted as her babysitter had taken a liking to her and Lavi doubted it was just because of the sentience it possessed.
The train ride passed in relative peace despite the gambling with the miners talking of their travels and Allen returning with stories of his own, carefully modified to leave out any signs of Akuma or his daughter.
He had no intention of telling them.
Lavi’s job was to record history, not to teach it.
He didn’t have to tell them either. Most likely, this encounter would remain a footnote in Allen Walker’s biography.
The odd group had to leave the train before them, and their goodbyes were sweet and kind, warmer and lingering, a farewell that nobody wanted. Eeez hugged Allen once more and Momo and Crack both gave Allen a nudge and tousled his hair fondly.
When it came to Tyki, Lavi paid attention. Accommodator yet or not, someday Cornelia’s history might become relevant, and they’d need all the details.
“Take good care of yourself, menino,” Tyki said, making no move to embrace Allen, touch him in any way. How curious that he’d chosen distance when he so obviously wanted to reach for the opposite. Lavi had seen a hundred stories like this already, how bitter love like this must be.
At moments like this, Lavi was glad that he was forever exempt from such heartbreak.
“I’m not the one always on the road, running off doing odd jobs,” Allen countered with a soft smile, a joke that failed to hide any of the pain. “Take care of yourself as well.”
The group left the train, and it was only as the machine was already departing that Tyki tossed something at Allen, the same playing cards they’d used earlier. Lavi watched quietly as Allen looked through the cards until melancholy turned his lips upwards.
“Hearts this time,” Allen muttered under his breath, likely not meant to be picked up by Lavi’s ears.
He packed the cards into the pocket of his coat and wrapped it tightly around his body as if to keep out the imaginary cold. When Allen looked up, his eyes fixed on Lavi, he seemed torn between determination and desperation.
“Don’t tell anyone,” Allen said, or perhaps ordered. “Please.”
So it hadn’t gone unnoticed that Lavi had uncovered his little secret.
Checking that Krory was still out of earshot, busy carrying their luggage to this empty compartment, Lavi chose to engage. “Why not tell him?”
Allen shrugged, then smiled just a bit pained. “His world is different from ours. They don’t have much cash, so I wouldn’t dump a child on them, and it would be careless to ask Tyki, and the others by extension, to step into the nightmare that is our reality. It’s better this way.”
Lavi hummed in agreement, thinking on the report he’d make to Bookman. Allen Walker, despite his cheerful optimism, could be quite realistic, almost painfully so.
They didn’t tell the families of their Finders about the deceased either.
Ignorance, wounding as it might be, left you with nothing to mourn or miss.
(Later, bound to a chair, the Fourth Apostle screaming at him, Lavi would remember his past assessment and laugh at his naivete.)

HOUSE OF HADOR
Note: With regard to name translations, I took inspiration from this article; specifically, I used some of the suggestions for name meanings of the early Hadorians and assigned them to elements in my Taliska glossary (see Appendix A).
~~~
Marach ft. Marach, Legen (OC), Malach Aradan, Imlach It is canon that while they were the third House to enter Beleriand, Marach’s people were originally in the lead; also canon is the attitude of the Green-elves toward them and Marach’s decision to remain in Estolad even though his son led many of his people further west. Since Imlach’s son Amlach is still in Estolad during the time of dissent, it is highly probable (though not explicitly stated afaik) that Imlach remained with his father. Everything else is headcanon. Also, Marach is trans because I said so <3
Imlach ft. Imlach, Amar (OC), Amlach The basic structure of this story is canon: Malach remained in Estolad; Amlach was a dissenter who was impersonated and became an elf-friend in his anger at the deception, entering into Maedhros’ service. I added a lot of details to flesh out the story, especially Amlach’s confusing night in the forest. I think Sauron (or one of his servants) stranded him in the woods and stole his likeness, though I doubt Amlach ever really figured out exactly what happened.
Malach Aradan ft. Malach Aradan, Zimrahin Meldis, Adanel, Magor Malach did enter Fingolfin’s service, and the basic details of his familial relationship are canon. Much of the rest of this is headcanon, however.
Magor ft. Magor, Amathal (OC), Hathol, Thevril (OC), Hador Lórindol We don’t know much about Magor or Hathol; the only canonical detail here is that Magor did move his people away from Hithlum and served no elf lord (though we don’t have details on why). Everything else is headcanon.
Hador Lórindol ft. Hador Lórindol, Gildis, Glóredhel, Galdor of Dor-lómin, Gundor This is mostly canon, though it has been embellished, and everything about Gildis other than her name is headcanon. Gundor’s life is also mostly headcanon, though the manner of his death is canon; I’ll go into his story soon.
Gundor ft. Gundor, Angreneth (OC), Indor, Padrion (OC), Aerin, Peleg We don’t know anything about Gundor other than the manner of his death; we also don’t know how Aerin is related to Húrin, so I decided to expand on both of those unknowns with the same story. Aerin’s father is said to be Indor, who is elsewhere said to be the father of Peleg (who was himself the father of Tuor in an early draft), so I made him the son of Gundor. Since Peleg obviously can’t be Tuor’s father anymore, I killed him off at the Nírnaeth...just like Huor, oops. I think Brodda took Aerin to wife before Morwen disappeared, but I couldn’t figure out how to word that concisely, so I left it kind of vague/misleading in the caption. Oh well.
Galdor of Dor-lómin ft. Galdor of Dor-lómin, Hareth, Húrin Thalion, Huor This is mostly canon, though it has been embellished to give Hareth a bit of personality. Ylmir is the Sindarin name for Ulmo, used by Tuor in his song “The Horns of Ylmir.”
Húrin Thalion ft. Húrin Thalion, Morwen Eledhwen, Túrin Turambar, Beleg Cúthalion, Urwen Lalaith, Niënor Níniel Boy howdy this is a long one! It’s almost entirely canon, though I’ve added some embellishments here and there. Beleg is included because he and Túrin were definitely married (at least by elven standards); I’ll go more into that, and the details of Túrin’s time with the Gaurwaith, in a future edit, but for now I settled just using the gayest possible language. Same deal for his time in Nargothrond.
Huor ft. Huor, Rían, Tuor Eladar We don’t know that Galdor took an arrow specifically to the eye, but I thought it would be poetic if both he and Huor died in the same manner so I added that detail to the canon that Galdor was killed by an arrow. The rest of this is pretty much all canon, with some embellishments. Tuor’s story will continue in another edit.
Tuor Eladar ft. Tuor Eladar, Idril Celebrindal, Eärendil Ardamírë The meat of this story is canon, but I’ve added in some of my headcanons as well. I definitely embellished Annael’s departure from Mithrim to show my perspective on his decision to leave Tuor behind (I really do think he thought Tuor was dead or as good as it, and that as a leader he had the responsibility to keep the rest of his people safe). I’m a little foggy on why Tuor was already so obsessed with Gondolin when he met Gelmir and Arminas, because why would the Sindar of Mithrim be so excited about a Noldorin city? I guess maybe they had friends from way back when who went with Turgon? Or maybe they just wished they could be “safe” like the Gondolindrim were, idk. I was kind of vague there. Ylmir is the Sindarin name for Ulmo; Yssion is a Sindarin name for Ossë (the other one is Gaerys, which I think sounds cooler but isn’t as close to a literal Sindarization as Yssion). The bit about Voronwë teaching Tuor Quenya on the road is headcanon, but I think it makes a lot of sense. Telpevontál is my Quenya translation of Celebrindal. I skimmed and skipped a lot of Tuor’s time in Gondolin, since I went over that in another edit. “The Horns of Ylmir” is a real song that Tolkien wrote (Adele McAllister has a cover of it); I added the bit about it triggering Idril’s foresight, though the song is absolutely foreshadowing no matter how you look at it. Eärendil did canonically get married the same year that Tuor and Idril left for Valinor; we don’t have much info on that otherwise, so I made it as bittersweet as possible. The bit about the Elessar is a lot of convoluted headcanon in my attempt to make sense of its 3 bajillion different origin stories. The name Ardamírë is prophetic because, you know, the whole Silmaril thing, but I liked the idea that Idril made the connection with the Elessar before the Silmaril came into the picture. All we know about Idril and Tuor’s fates in canon is that people ~believe~ they made it to Aman and that Tuor was counted as an elf, but that last bit never sat right with me since elsewhere it’s very clearly stated that the Gift of Men is not something that can be refused or taken away. The alternate legend is my own headcanon for what happened to them (I also think they had more peredhil kiddos); in my mind, the Valar let Tuor live the rest of his days in Valinor (all 500 years of them, I just think it’s poetic and connected to his grandson Elros’ fate) before he died peacefully and willingly, able to get closure with Idril before he went.
Storytellers ft. Eltas, Dírhaval Eltas is a character from the Book of Lost Tales, who tells Eriol the “Tale of Turambar.” Supposedly, he once lived in Hísilómë (Hithlum) and came to Tol Eressëa and the Cottage of Lost Play by the Straight Road. That story does not add up at all when you look at it through the lens of Tolkien’s later Legendarium, so I took the name and his origins in Hithlum and crafted an entirely different story for him. Dírhaval is canonically the poet who wrote the Narn i Chîn Húrin; he only wrote that one poem because he was killed at the Third Kinslaying before he could finish any of the other Great Tales like Narn i Leithian (The Lay of Leithian; from his Tolkien Gateway article I think that’s what he was working on after CoH? but I’m not totally sure. But Tolkien never finished the Leithian either, so I think it’s poetic to have Dírhaval do the same). Andvír was one of his sources in canon, I added in the others (Eltas, Nellas, Celebrimbor, Glrhuin), though it was conceivable (and canon, in Nellas’ case) that they knew Túrin enough to report his story (though we don’t know anything in canon about Nellas’ fate). These name translations are my own; I thought “sitting man” worked as a meaning for Dírhaval since I imagine that storytellers like him were known as folk who sat around a lot writing or telling tales.
Servants of Morwen ft. Morwen Eledhwen, Gethron, Grithnir, Ragnir the Blind, Sador Labadal Morwen sending her servants to talk to the elves is headcanon, and so is Gethron knowing some Sindarin, though I think that makes sense considering he did canonically travel across Beleriand and was the one who spoke to Thingol when they arrived in Doriath. We don’t know anything in canon about Ragnir except that he was blind. Sador’s story is canon, though I have added some embellishments here and there. Aside from Sador and Morwen, these name translations are all my own and extremely dubious, but I did my best.
Companions of Húrin ft. Húrin Thalion, Asgon, Ragnir the Outlaw, Dringoth (OC), Dimaethor (OC), Negenor (OC), Tondir (OC), Haedirn (OC), Orthelron (OC) This edit tells the beginning part of “The Wanderings of Húrin,” an unfinished manuscript that was cut from the final published Silmarillion. Húrin’s role in this tale is canon up through his departure from Brethil (that was where Tolkien left off); the way that he left his companions a final time is my headcanon. Asgon and Ragnir are the only names of his companions we know from canon; Asgon’s role as a former outlaw who had known Túrin when he returned to Dor-lómin and started a rebellion is canon, and Ragnir’s pessimism (asking to go home) and his relative youth is also from canon. Everything else about these outlaws is my headcanon, including my reasons for why they weren’t present at the Nírnaeth where literally all the able-bodied men of the House of Hador had perished (except for Húrin). Húrin did go to Nargothrond after Brethil, but I made up everything past that point. We know that there were some Edain at the Havens of Sirion (and presumably there were Men present in the War of Wrath that Elros mingled with before becoming their King), so I thought this could be a way for the remnant of the Haladin (and some of the House of Hador) to get there. I’ll go over the rest of “The Wanderings of Húrin” in future edits, when we get to the relevant Haladin characters.
Gaurwaith ft. Neithan, Beleg Cúthalion, Forweg, Andróg, Andvír, Algund, Ulrad, Orleg, Blodren This is largely a canon-compliant overview of Túrin’s life among the outlaws. The stories of Forweg and Andróg (and Beleg and Túrin/Neithan) are canon (though I did take that extra step and marry off Túrin and Beleg). Orleg’s story is canon, though it’s one that I had overlooked on my various readthroughs of Túrin’s Silm chapter & CoH. Algund and Ulrad’s stories are presented in a slightly tweaked/condensed form; Andvír’s origins as the son of Andróg (??? when did he have a son and why is it never mentioned in the main story???) are canon but (as expressed in parentheses) rather baffling, so I didn’t really emphasize him. Blodren is a character who isn’t in the later drafts of this story; he was an Easterling who was tortured by Morgoth because he “withstood Uldor the Accursed,” and eventually turned into a spy for Morgoth. (As with all Easterling names, his etymology is entirely made up.) He “served Túrin faithfully for two years” before fulfilling the role later taken up by Mîm and betraying the Gaurwaith to the orcs. He was killed by a “chance arrow in the dark” during the battle. I altered his story so that he wasn’t personally tortured by Morgoth and thus did not turn; since he was an Easterling and the rest of the Gaurwaith were Edain, I decided they probably treated him poorly, and threw in a bit of a friendship with Mîm as a nod to how Mîm took over his role. Also, I think Easterlings having pre-existing relationships with dwarves is a cool concept—especially since Bór’s people and Azaghâl’s people both served under Maedhros at the Nírnaeth, and could possibly have had the chance to interact!
Secrets
Nia Nal x Reader
Requested by @piratesbelongatsea
Hi 👋 Can you write Reader and Nia are dating but R doesn't know that Nia is dreamer. Later R finds out or Nia tells reader (your choice)
Hopefully you like this. It is my first time writing a Nia Nal x Reader and I hope I did this justice.
(Y/N)- Your Name
Warnings- Language
You and Nia had been met each other through Kara. You had thought she was the most beautiful woman you had ever seen. You were a flustered stuttering mess around her in the beginning. Her smile, her laugh, the way she was so passionate about the things she cared about had made you fall for her so quick you hadn't even realized what had happened until it was too late. She had gained your heart without even trying. What you dint know was that she felt the same way as you but she was scared because she held quite a few secrets. Eventually though you had gained the courage to ask her on a date. You had been extremely nervous and terrified that she was going to reject you. She hadn't though and one date turned into many dates. She felt as though you deserved the truth though or at least part of the truth and so even though she was scared of how you might react she decided to tell you one of the secrets that she held so very close. You could remember that day clearly. She had been so nervous and rambled on about she would understand if you wanted to leave her. You had pulled her close to you and kissed her softly. You couldn't even imagine ever wanting to leave her. After she had pulled away from the kiss she blurted out that she was a trans woman. You had been shocked but at the look of fear in her eyes you had quickly pulled her into another kiss. You loved her and that meant all of her. You told her just as much and she had just stared at you in surprise. She had thought that maybe you would feel betrayed but you had just taken it in stride. How could you not though? She was the most amazing, brave, and strong woman you had ever met and this just made you realize how truly amazing, brave, and strong she was. That had only been a couple of months ago and you had thought the two of you were stronger than ever but lately it seemed like she was always too busy for you now. You had tried setting up dates only for her to end up extremely late or cancel. You were worried that maybe you had said something or done something wrong. You did have a bit of a habit of putting your foot in your mouth and not realizing it. You began to think over everything you had said and done before Nia became distant but you couldn't remember doing or saying anything wrong. You hoped she would eventually come to you and talk about whatever was causing her to be distant so you tried to be patient. You wanted her to come to you when she ready. You didn't want to push her. Eventually though after she ended up skipping date night without calling or texting causing you to become extremely worried you decided to approach her about it. You needed some kind of answers about why she was distant. You woke up early to go over to her apartment hoping to catch her before she disappeared wherever she had been going to lately. Once you made it to her apartment you knocked on the door, surprised and happy that Nia had answered the door.
"Hey Nia. Can we talk please? I'm really worried about you." You said hoping she would let you in. She seemed to debate it for a second before noosing and opening the door more for you. You quickly walked inside her apartment before she could change he mind. You sat down on the couch and tried to organize your thoughts so you wouldn't say the wrong thing.
"Did I do or say something wrong Nia? If I did I am truly sorry and if you explain whatever I said or did I will try my hardest to not repeat my mistake." You said softly your voice cracking. You were trying to keep your emotions under control but it was hard because seeing her in front of you made you truly realize how much you would lose if you lost her.
"What! Of course not (Y/N). What would make you think that babe?" She asked you confusion clear in her voice. You bit your lip trying to contain the tears that wanted to escape from your eyes out of pure relief. You hadn't done or said anything to make her so upset she avoided you. Thank god. Since you weren't the reason that she had become distant than what was though?
"You've just been so distant love. You either cancel our dates or show up extremely late. Then yesterday night you completely skipped the date and didn't call or text me. I was really worried about you. You know you can tell me anything right? You can trust me Nia. No matter what is going on we can get through it together. You have to tell me what's going on first though." You told her. Her jaw dropped open and she tried to say something but nothing came out. You began to worry. What if the reason she had become distant was because she no longer loved you. The thought instantly broke your heart. You loved her with everything you were. Nia on the other hand was debating if she should tell you that she was Dreamer or not. She didn't want you to hate her for keeping such a huge secret from you. Yet, when she had told you about her being a trans woman you hadn't been upset that she had hid it from you. You were just happy she felt safe enough and trusted you enough to reveal that part of herself to you.
"Do you not love me anymore? Is that why you are distant?" She heard you ask with a watery voice. She felt the panic enter her body. Is that what you thought? She couldn't stop herself from blurting out,
"I'm Dreamer and I have been fighting crime with Supergirl. I dint want to tell you because I was scared of how you would react and that if anyone found out you knew they would use you against me and if you were ever hurt because of me (Y/N) I would never forgive myself." She had said all of that so quickly you had barely managed to catch it. Once her words registered with you a look of shock overcame your face. Your girlfriend was Dreamer. The new badass superhero of National City.
"I'm dating Dreamer." You whispered in awe "HOLY SHIT! My girlfriend is Dreamer. Babe you're a badass." You told her excitedly as you looked at her. It was her turn to be overcome with shock. You weren't upset, in fact you actually seemed in awe and excited about the fact that she was Dreamer. Once she had overcome her shock a soft smile appeared on her lips. She should have known you would react like this. You had always been the most supportive and understanding person she had ever had in her life. She leaned towards you and kissed you slowly. neither one of you pulled away until your lungs were burning and begging for air. You smiled at her and placed a kiss on her forehead. You're girlfriend was not only one of the strongest women you had ever met but now, well now she was a certified badass. You really had scored the jackpot with her.
"I love you." You had whispered your love for her coating your voice as you leaned in for another kiss. While you had so many questions for your girlfriend you decided that they could wait until later. For now you were just going to enjoy the feeling of her lips on yours.
A/N- I am being a huge procrastinator right now and am doing anything and everything I can to avoid my school work right now lol so if you have a prompt idea you would like done relatively soon send it in and it will more than likely be posted by the end of tonight.
Unexpected Inspiration Series Masterpost: About the Secondary Dorks
The Unexpected Inspiration series is lighthearted, lgbt+ high fantasy set in a contemporary world. If you're into magic, found family, and characters who like to cause mischief, I got you covered! The short stories are all available to read and you can learn more about the series here and about the main characters here.
Under the read more is information about each of these secondary characters.
Name: Ametrine Travellarri Age: 12 Gender: nonbinary Birthplace: Galanvoth Occupation: kid Magic: none
Ametrine is a shy and quiet runaway from the neighboring country of Galanvoth. He rarely talks about his past, but from what the others have pieced together, his family replaced him. Galanvoth is a place where passing on a trade is more important than anything else, and it isn't uncommon for a firstborn to be demoted or kicked out of their family entirely if they're deemed not good enough. Ametrine was able to get away and made it to the safety of Concordia's capital city, where he was fostered with Sapphire and her carnival troupe. He meets Dray not long after this. Dray was also a runaway from Galanvoth and takes Ametrine under their wing, introducing him to their friends who immediately treat Ametrine as though he was part of their family. When he's asked if he wants to be adopted, he doesn't really understand why they would want him when his own parents didn't. He agrees without much hesitation, though, because the way he sees it, five people who love him unconditionally is a much better family than two traditional parents who didn't. For a while there's a fear in the back of his mind that he won't be good enough for them, but gradually this starts to fade. (Character tag- UI POV: Ametrine / moodboard / Pinterest board)
Name: Skia (he has no idea what his name is, so Ametrine helped him pick this one) Age: 14 (not that he remembers this) Gender: genderqueer Birthplace: ? (he has no clue) Occupation: haunting people Magic: he's a ghost, he does ghost things
Skia is a mystery, even to himself. He's dead, that much is obvious, but he no longer has any memory of who he was as a human or how he could have died. He's been drifting aimlessly around both the real world and what Etri calls "the place of shadow" for an unknown amount of time, up until Camille summons him mostly by accident. She was aiming for a helpful shadow elemental who could possibly tell her where Rosalie went. What she gets is the ghost of a mischievous, cheeky teenager who she can't seem to banish. Fortunately for her, Skia soon grows bored with her company and decides to haunt Ametrine instead. Ametrine is frightened at first-- it's not every day that you discover a ghost followed you home. But when the fridge magnets and sloppily handwritten notes start to spell out an equal mix of kind words and stupid jokes that make him laugh, he realizes the ghost must be another kid who's also lonely. The longer Skia hangs around Ametrine, the more he's able to retain a memory. He’s never able to remember much about his past, but because of Ametrine, he’s able to gain a present and a future. I'd say you’d never see Ametrine without Skia, but no one can see Skia. (Character Tag- UI POV: Skia / Pinterest board)
Name: Feren Cole Age: 19 Gender/sexuality: male (cis), bisexual Birthplace: Concordia Occupation: barista (when he can be bothered to show up) Magic: none
Feren is a layabout who loves styling himself into a tragic victim. As one of the few unmagical Artisans, he has always felt like he deserved more than life gave him, despite having everything handed to him and multiple opportunities available at every turn. He was once Adair and Nina’s sentinel-intended, but the second things got slightly dangerous, he decided it was too difficult and he wasn't good enough for the role. He’s currently taking graduate classes on the history of magic, with no real career goal in mind. This was simply the easiest choice at the time and he has never had work to be good at scholarly pursuits. It's unfortunate, but also entirely on point for him, that he puts as much real effort into this as he does working at his girlfriend’s restaurant as a barista and delivery boy. It's a one in three chance he'll be bothered to show up on time and he lives there. If an easy road to recognition and leisure presents itself, he’s going to jump on it with no questions asked. He’s always seeking to improve his lot in life with the minimum amount of effort on his part. (Character Tag- UI POV: Feren / Moodboard / Pinterest board)
Name: Sapphire Age: never ask a lady her age (she looks to be in her early-mid 30s) Gender/sexuality: female (cis), panromantic greysexual Birthplace: Concordia Occupation: leader of a carnival troupe Magic: none (technically. She can see/sense magic, though)
Sapphire is Etri's former mentor and thieving partner, as well as one of his closest friends. She’s currently the leader of the carnival troupe in Silveridge, the capital city of Concordia, and coordinates the city's performers. This is about as effective as herding cats. When Sapphire isn't sorting out who's performing at which venue and breaking up arguments about costumes, she can be found in her other organizational role with the troupe. Many of the performers are also thieves who return stolen art back to the artists who created it. It's up to Sapphire to keep track of what each reverse-thief is doing so that they don't cross paths or get caught. Sapphire excels at this administrative role, being calm, competent, and experienced, while at the same time her strong desire to take care of the people she considers family makes them intensely loyal. Keeping her carnies safe always comes before anything else and there's nothing her troupe wouldn't do for her in return. (Character tag- UI POV: Sapphire / moodboard / Pinterest board)
Name: Talan Age: 3. It's complicated. Gender/sexuality: male (cis), demi/grey-romantic pan Birthplace: Montglace Occupation: errand boy Magic: none
Talan is equal parts cheerful and peculiar, with almost a lethal case of curiosity. He’s something of a magpie who collects various bits of everything in a personal quest to discover its purpose. He has a tenuous grasp on the concept of possessions and tends to think of anything that isn’t currently being worn or carried or nailed down as fair game. He’s Dray’s boyfriend, at least for a little while, and Dray’s malfunctioning moral compass hasn’t exactly been the best influence in Talan’s life. Relatively new to Concordia in particular and civilization in general, Talan struggles with things like laws, idioms, and telling people apart. He’s determined to learn these things, though, and wants more than anything to fit in and be helpful. (Moodboard / Pinterest board)
Name: Nina Pare Age: 20 Gender/sexuality: female (cis), bi? hetero? (she’s only dated guys and I don’t know her well enough yet to guess which it is) Birthplace: Concordia Occupation: chef, cafe owner Magic: Savorweaving (culinary)
Nina is a chef with culinary magic who owns her own cafe. As much of an honor as it was to have it passed to her when the previous owner retired, she'll be the first to admit that it probably wasn't the best time for it. This isn't to say that she's not a capable chef and businesswoman, more that Feren keeps messing things up for her and it would have been better if she'd had the chance to break up with him first. Every time she plans to do this, some disaster happens, and her personal life gets pushed to her back burner. She dreams of the day that she can take a break and travel, to gather new recipes and ideas, to visit the beaches she loves so much, to have five minutes to breathe. Someone give this poor, overworked woman a vacation. (Pinterest board)
Name: Wysta Larkspur Age: 39 Gender/sexuality: female (trans), bisexual Birthplace: Concordia Occupation: healer Magic: healing/telepathy
Wysta is the lead healer of Blythe, Etri, and Sol's carnival troupe. She was Blythe's first instructor in arcane healing and remained her mentor and friend after Blythe moved on to further study. Wysta is a former Protectorate and her shaved head is a sign of giving up the life of a guard. Specific braids designate status as a Protectorate and it’s a ritual to cut off the braid when you pick a different path in life. Usually a former Protectorate will let their hair grow back, but Wysta keeps her head shaved as a personal-- and practical, considering her profession-- style choice. While Wysta is efficient and sensible, contrasting with the flightier personalities of the carnies she calls family, she possesses both a great sense of humor and a friendly bedside manner. There are very few people Blythe admires and respects, so it says a lot that she holds Wysta in the highest regard and trusts her with information she doesn't give anyone else.
You are so smart and well educated, especially regarding Israel and Jewish history, so I hope you don't mind if I ask you to help me, an uneducated (and to be honest mostly ignorant towards politics because of personal issues) person, to graps what the fuss is about all the political statements during ESC this year? I'm really confused and used google but I understand like maybe half of what's going on. Sorry to bother you.
Hey, thank you for coming to me. First off, I have studied and learned a lot abut the topics, but they’re very complex and full of details beyond my grasp. I’ll try to make this short, but your ask was a little broad and calls for a couple of explanations.
First off, there are rules against political statements and activism in every Eurovision song contest. For example, the only flags allowed in the arenas are the flags of UN states and of the EU, as well as unpolitical flags like the rainbow or the trans flag. In 2016, there was a conflict because the Armenian delegation held up a flag of Bergkarabach, which is debatable territory between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Now, here’s the EBU statement: “In the live broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final, Hatari, the Icelandic act, briefly displayed small Palestinian banners whilst sat in the Green Room. The Eurovision Song Contest is a non-political event and this directly contradicts the contest’s rules. The banners were quickly removed and the consequences of this action will be discussed by the Reference Group (the contest’s executive board) after the contest.”
Determining a course of action on legal grounds based on the flag rule is going to be a little difficult because as of 29th November 2012, Palestine was granted the status of an observer state in the UN. However, showing the Palestine flag in Israel, on an Israelian stage, is considered political activism (and just generally…bad).
To briefly touch on the history of the Palestinian and Israelian conflict is almost impossible. The area of today’s Israel and Palestine used to belong to the Osmanian Empire, which shattered in 1922 officially and for a huge number of reasons. Great Britain took over mandate control for the area they then called Palestine, until it was possible to establish its own state. This was a common idea of the time for colonies that were supposed to be supported on their way to independency. Jews had fled to this area for centuries, but especially so during the 19th century because of rising antisemitism in Europe. While it wasn’t exactly pleasant to live as dimmi, people of the books and second-class citizens, it was relatively safe and peaceful, and Arab people happily sold their land to Jewish immigrants.
The idea of safety for the Jewish people led to the idea of a Jewish state, which is zionism. However, there were many options discussed as to where this Jewish state should be installed – among them were Uganda and Argentina. In the end, it probably was a mixture of many factors, like the Jewish connection to the land of Israel and Jerusalem, the fact that many Jewish people had bought land in Palestine for a relatively good price and that a lot of Jewish communities already lived there. Great Britain agreed to install a Jewish state, however they also installed the Great Mufti of Jerusalem, Mohammed Amin al-Husseini, and he incited violence and pogroms against the Jewish people. He vehemently opposed the existence of any Jewish state and also collaborated with the Nazis, organised a Muslim garnison in the SS, and is responsible for many people dying in the Holocaust because he prevented them from fleeing to Palestine.
So, after the Holocaust, the calls for a Jewish state for the Jewish people got louder because it had been made abundantly clear that no other state would guarantee their safety and survival. The UN was very newly installed and kinda improvised a new solution for the territorial conflict: There should be both a Jewish state, called Israel, and an Arab state, called Palestine. Jerusalem should stay under UN control. It was a hasty, imperfect plan, however the Jews accepted while the Arabs declined and the Arab nations surrounding Israel declared war on the same day Israel was founded. Against all odds, Israel won the wars and exists to this day. During the war, there were many refugees on both sides. Israel advertised for Arab people to stay and granted them full citizen rights. The Arab states called for Arabs to leave the places of war and conflict and were promised they could return to their homes when the war was over aka Israel destroyed. Well, guess what. Many refugees of these days and their decendants fled to Syria, Jordan, Egypt but were not taken in and instead were used against Israel. To this day, there are refugee camps in Jordan which does not grant any of their decendents who were born there city rights. Jewish people were dispelled from their homes and found a new home in Israel.
So, Israel as a state is the only guarantee in the world for safety and survival for the Jewish people. If you know any Jewish people in Europe, you will often hear their discussions and plans of going to Israel. The state exists, and it will continue to exist and thrive. To debate its right to an existence is politically pointless because it was granted by the UN and other leading political organisations, and antisemitic because it’s a direct call against the safety of Jews everywhere. Palestine wasn’t a state in the beginning at first and to this day has a special political status. In the 1940-1960s, a lot of Palestinians didn’t even want to be called Palestinians and the leading politicians in fact called for Palestine to be reunited with Syria, calling them Syrians. In 2005, Israel granted Gaza’s wishes and completely unrooted all Jewish life in the Gaza strip, making it free of living Jews for the first time in millenias. Unsurprisingly, peace did not follow.
Phew. I left out about a thousand details around here, so please use these points as a starting point for your research and take it with a grain of salt.
The conflict between Israel and Palestine to this day exists because Palestine does not acknowledge Israel’s right to exist and uses acts of terrorism and war against the state. Beginning of May, Gaza fired way over 600 rockets on Israel, aiming at schools and civilian buildings, killing 4 and injuring over 300 people. Their leading political organisation, Hamas, calls for the complete destruction of Israel and their people. They also refer to Israel as an oppressing state and an occupation of their territory.
One of the organisations that also believes Israel to be an occupator is the BDS organisation, which is a Boycott against Israel. It claims to be peaceful and harmless, but aims to completely isolate Israel in every way, culturally, economically, politically, from the rest of the world. They also want Palestinian refugees in Gaza and Westbank to have a right to return to Israel. However, given that Israel has a population of about 15 million people, and 20% of them are not Jewish, integrating about 8 million people of non-jewish Arabs into Israel would make Jews a minority in Israel and effectively end the existence of the only Jewish state in the world. (also good luck boycotting Israeli technology like the world's most efficient field hospital, the USB stick, and just about every smartphone works with Israeli technology.)
BDS called for a boycott of the ESC in Israel, Roger Waters himself foamed at the mouth when Madonna was announced to perform in Tel Aviv. One band that is at least close to the BDS is Hatari, the Icelandic group. They announced their intentions to use their performance to criticise Israel for the way they treat Palestinians.There was debate in Israel apparently whether they should be allowed to come to Tel Aviv, in the end they were allowed. They returned the favour by showing the flag of their biggest aggressor and threat to safety.
Funnily enough, homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment and death in Gaza. So I can’t help but wonder how well their support was received in Palestine… It’s a typically European knee-jerk reaction. They want to show solidarity with what they think is the underdog in that conflict, and they’re cowardly showing their protest in a democractic, safe country.
Madonna’s performance is problematic because she agreed to do a non-political act and proceeded to slap the flags on their dancers at the very last second, betraying the trust and rules of the hosts. Her act shows a big, scary man dressed like a soldier in a black uniform as Israel and a tiny woman in a white dress as Palestine, and in the beginning she talks about supposedly hidden crimes that ‘we all know of’ wink-wonk. It’s a tired provocatin and villainification of Israel imo. The reactions all over social media show that it was not actually perceived as a message of peace and love, but as a message of pro-Palestinian interests, painting them the victims and only the victims of the conflict.
There was probably more going on with political statements in the ESC, but you referred to Jewish history and Israel, so I hope your questions are covered with this response!
Whats Poland like for LGBT peeps? asking as i may want to move there for work in the future.
Uhh... That’s a hard question really, but I wouldn’t say it’s great. From the perspective of law, the LGBT+ folks in here don’t have any right you’d expect in some other countries and our lovely government decided to pick us as their Big Bad Enemy of the season, so yes, it’s as amazing as you can imagine.
I’d say that society cares much less, especially in bigger cities. The place where I live is relatively safe, I’d imagine even bigger cities like Kraków or Wrocław are even better. I never met with any verbal or physical violence towards me, but I’m saying that as a bi woman who doesn’t show off her sexuality irl very much (aside from wearing rainbow trinkets) so I can imagine other peoples experiences can be drastically different. If you’re trans or nb things may be harder for you (but again, I’m cis so I’m not speaking from experience, it’s just my guess)
Tbh, most of all, it’s just tiring as hell. Listening to the bullshit our government spits from their narrow-minded, uneducated mouths, calling people like you pedophiles and a “danger to traditional polish family” is tiring. Hearing the catholic church representatives spilling their bullshit about you and you alike is tiring. Looking at the opposition who tries to cater to you for votes and then blames you for their political failure is tiring.Listening to the news is tiring.Meeting new people who seem to be cool, only for them to turn out being homophobic/supporting openly homophobic people is tiring.Dealing with people so conservative, so unwilling to learn and understand simply makes you feel exhausted.
We’re not giving up of course. We’re here, we’re queer, we keep fighting for our right’s. But is coming here worth it? This question I can’t answer...
Are hysterectomies a relatively safe procedure long-term? I'm talking about just removal of the uterus and leaving the ovaries intact (I know removal of the ovaries can have potential health consequences). How easy are they to get as a young trans man? Can I expect to be harassed by doctors about not having kids? I know cis women seeking sterilization often experience pushback, but idk if doctors will give a trans man a hard time about it.
Yes, it is a relatively safe procedure long term. Beyond complications follow surgery, the main long-term component to keep in mind is that if you still have ovaries, you can still get ovarian cancer. The likelihood of course depends on a lot of factors like your family’s medical history, but it is still within the realm of possibility.
As for your other questions, it really depends on where you live. If you live in California, for instance, like I do, it took very little to get my hysterectomy. I had to sit with two different psychologists and go over the procedure and why I wanted it as well as get blood work done and meet with my GP for a physical, the board who handles trans care approved it, and then I was referred to a surgeon.
Despite it being shitty care for a patient, you could possibly still receive pushback depending on where you live/who you go to. Whether or not you want kids is going to be something that comes up, and you’ll be asked multiple times whether or not you’re sure, but ultimately it seems like trans men have an easier time getting hysterectomies than cis women.
If you live in or near a large town or a city, there’s a good chance there is an LGBT/trans center, and they could potentially have information on what doctors/surgeons are trans friendly, so that could aid you.
-Mod CalebHey, there’s a free transgender health advocate, who is totally willing to help you get the healthcare you need, and you can contact them at this link. When or if you get pushback from an insurance provider or a health care provider, they are your best resource, nationwide!Mod mayhem
Lesbian
4. How tall are they?
A bit above average height
5. What do they look like?
She can shapeshift into a human form when needed, but her default is her nixe form
6. What are their defining features?
Piercing eyes and constant little motions
7. Does their name have a meaning?
The actual name Vieva doesn’t, but her name sign is the combined motions for “green” and “dancer”
8. What family do they have?
A whole clan that all lives together and is too complex to be explained outside of a diagram
9. Do they have a good relationship with their family?
It’s slightly strained but everyone pretends it isn’t
10. If not, why?
Vieva is kinda an outlier in her clan. She’s a dreamer and very politically progressive by merfolk standards, and she’s always wanted more than backwater river life. It was the unspoken elephant in the room, and things only got more tense when she moved away
11. Where do they live?
Gro-Bwue, a big fictional underwater city at the mouth of the Mississippi River. This is her home, but for plot reasons she had to leave it for a while
12. Is it a safe place?
In some respects it’s safer than the river she grew up in and in others it’s more dangerous
13. Are they poor, middle class, or wealthy?
Middle class
14. Do they look up to anyone?
Yes, Trewe, First of Her Name, the founder of her clan. Also she really admires Cyune and Max, but I’m not sure that’s in a way that exactly fits this question
Bellon missed her really bad when she moved away to Gro-Bwue. A few of her clan members have died in her lifetime
Yes. Vieva will listen, stay and comfort as long as someone needs, and then leave and try her hardest to fix the problem. No problem is unsolvable in her mind
24. Are they well liked?
No. She’s pretty much a loner who happens upon friends by accident
25. How do they handle being complimented?
Hm. Depends on if she thinks she deserves the compliment or not. If it’s about her dancing especially, she’ll take it at face value and preen. If she doesn’t think whatever it was was worth complimenting, she’ll take it really poorly and suspiciously
26. Are they an affectionate person?
No. Vieva cares and feels very deeply, but she’s not the greatest at expressing it, through words or physical affection. Big gestures come a lot easier to her
27. Are they very driven?
Extremely
28. Are they very political?
Yes and Vieva starts arguments at the dinner table over it
29. What kind of state is the world that they live in?
Socialist city-states halfway through the process of transitioning from theocracy to democracy
The world leaders have historically been the local water spirits of any given place, but now they’re just whoever has the most influence to get the most votes, and wants to be a leader in the first place
31. Does the character worry about their place in society?
A bit, but she tries not to dwell on it
32. If they could change one thing, what would it be?
She’d make the water her clan lives in clean and safe again
33. Do they like themselves?
For the most part, but she does have intense occasional guilt over random stuff
Only to wrongs done to herself. She seeks vengeance for her loved ones
36. Do they believe in destiny?
Literally never heard of it until she came to the human world, so no
37. Are they trustworthy?
Again, depends on your definition of trustworthy
38. Are they a good liar?
No. She is truly a shockingly bad liar and only gets away with it because the alternative is nigh unbelievable
39. How do they react to criticism?
She only cares about criticism if it comes from someone whose opinion she respects
40. What is their moral alignment?
Chaotic neutral
41. Can they fight?
Yes, and she’d win too
Nope!
Yeah she catches on quick
Merfolk are only on the brink of creating formalized schools in their biggest city-states
49. What is their job?
Vieva is a professional dancer in training
50. Do they enjoy their job?
She loves it. It’s her life’s passion
They/Them
Summary: Gabriel finds themself the victim of discrimination while at Pride but a man he doesn’t know stands up for them and calls out his friend’s toxic behavior. Turns out that’s the just start of it all.
Pairing: Sabriel (cisgender Sam x nonbinary Gabriel)
Rating: teen and up
Warnings: blatant transphobia/nonbinaryphobia and discrimination, some curse words, hurt/comfort, angsty start with a happy middle and ending, explicit mentions of sex but no mentions/depictions of explicit sex (if you don’t want to read that, stop before the time jump)
Word Count: 1239
A/N: This is my entry for the June @gabriel-monthly-challenge. I loosely used both aesthetic prompts for inspiration. I also didn’t go straight for one of the Pride story prompts but took inspiration from the spirit of them, writing a fic set at Pride. I was also inspired by two short text posts I saw floating around on tumblr - a couple people reblogged them - that I could just hear Gabriel saying as I read them. I was supposed to be packing for a trip and, instead, I wrote this. Gabriel agrees that packing is terrible.
One final note: I am not trans or nonbinary however I based a lot of Gabriel’s story on the real story of a friend of mine who is (with their permission).
They/Them -
Gabriel put their head down and kept walking. Growing up knowing they were different in a small town in the deep south meant that they had heard every slur in the book - and even some that weren’t in there - hurled at them. They had a thick skin by now but this time it hurt worse. This time, the abuse was coming from within the walls, or fences really, of Pride. Gabriel had moved to the city almost a year ago, leaving their small minded town behind. They had found a great group of friends and had assumed the positivity and support they had experienced would extend to the rest of the revelers they would meet during Pride but that was, apparently, not the case.
“Stop being such a snowflake,” one of the men shouted at Gabriel, “your kind is causing too much trouble for the rest of us.”
The man’s words made Gabriel regret the outfit they had chosen for the day. But it was the last day of Pride and skirts were freaking comfortable, damnit. Not to mention the tank top - one of their favorites, though it didn’t make it out of the closet often - black with the word “enby” printed across the chest in the colors of the pansexual flag. They picked up their pace, wanting to pass the group of men as quickly as possible. “Association of Gay Lawyers” the banner a few of them held read. Well, Gabriel wouldn’t be going to any of them if they ever needed legal assistance.
The man was still shouting terrible things as Gabriel drew closer. When a second man joined him, they were nearly in tears. Even so, Gabriel couldn’t help but notice that this guy was the sexiest man they had ever seen in their life. He was tall and muscular, filling out his v-neck and plaid over-shirt so well that it was practically criminal, and he had shaggy, chocolate brown hair that Gabriel just wanted to run their hands through. Instead, though, they braced themselves for the taunts to double.
Much to their surprise, though, that wasn’t the case when the man opened his mouth.
At first, Gabriel assumed that the words were directed at them but when they chanced a glance up, the man was glaring at his friend.
“Pride is all about loving ourselves for who we are when the world tells us we’re unlovable. Trans and non binary people don’t threaten your fun or your existence as a gay man, Brady,” the tall guy continued before the first man could speak up. “So you and your transphobic bullshit and bigotry can fuck off.”
Gabriel stood and stared, transfixed by what was happening. They didn’t know this guy; why was he standing up for them?
“What are you looking at bitch boy?” the first man - Brady, apparently - shouted. He was probably lashing out, Gabriel knew, but the words still cut deep. They turned on their heel and stalked away, their fists balled at their side, seeking the relative safety of the Genderfluid Coalition tent. Though, if Gabriel was being honest with themself, they weren’t sure if anywhere would actually be safe from assholes like Brady.
Gabriel was so wrapped up in their head that they nearly missed the sound of feet pounding on the pavement as someone followed them, running to catch up.
“Hey!” the handsome man called out, causing Gabriel to stop despite their better judgement. “I’m sorry you had to listen to Brady say that crap back there. He’s an asshole but the guys tend to let him get away with it because his dad’s a high powered attorney. But…”
“But you don’t?” Gabriel spat, their voice hard.
The man took it in stride, though. “Nope. I don’t care who you know, doesn’t give you the right to treat another human being like shit. He and I were in college and then law school together. Somewhere in our sophomore year, the guy just changed. I guess I stick around because someone’s gotta keep him in check.”
He smiled down at Gabriel and, gods, his dimples…
“I’m just sorry I couldn’t do more but I really can’t handle another assault on my record.”
And now the man was blushing and Gabriel knew they were a goner. “Another?” they asked, clearing their throat.
“Uh, yeah,” the handsome man replied, rubbing at the back of his neck nervously. “I mean, it was a while ago, back in law school… A professor trying to prey on me and some of the other queer students. He didn’t get very far and even the police agreed that it was justified but… another assault would probably get me disbarred.”
They stood in silence for a moment, neither of them sure how to continue their conversation, though Gabriel definitely wanted to.
“Look,” the man finally said, “I know you probably didn’t need some white knight to ride in and save you but I just… You looked like you could use a friend back there.” He paused and held out a hand. “I’m Sam, by the way.”
Gabriel shook Sam’s hand and introduced themself. “Gabriel. They/them. And thanks, sometimes a knight in shining armor is nice.”
A second awkward silence fell between the pair and Gabriel knew they were blushing. This time, Gabriel was the one to break the silence.
“So… I’m always a slut for kindness and basic human decency,” they said, their tone light. “Let’s go camping and have tent sex.” It was a joke (mostly), the kind of thing that just fell out of Gabriel’s mouth when they were nervous, and they were surprised to see that Sam seemed to be considering their offer.
“Honestly, I think I’d like that,” Sam replied, “but I’d like to get to know you better first. Where were you headed? I’ll walk with you if that’s alright.”
Gabriel just nodded dumbly and pointed in the direction they had been heading. Shit like this didn’t happen, especially not to them. They walked off, Sam grabbing their hand as they moved together.
“Is this ok?” Sam asked.
“Yeah,” Gabriel replied as they realized that it really was.
Three months later
-----
“Gabriel! Come on!” Sam shouted.
He had gotten to Gabriel’s apartment right on time, only to find them still not ready. Sam had done all the preparation work - including packing a costume or two for him and Gabriel to play with (Gabe was going to look ridiculous and adorable in the camp counselor get up) - and all his partner had to do was pack for themselves. But of course, Gabriel had waited until the last minute.
“Just put your stuff in a bag, babe,” Sam insisted as he entered Gabriel’s bedroom. “I’ve got everything else covered. I’ve been planning for and looking forward to this trip since we met.”
Gabriel looked up at him with a quizzical look on their face.
“You promised me tent sex,” Sam reminded them. “Not to mention that our campsite is pretty secluded so I’m hoping for some hammock sex, some post s’mores sex next to the fire, and maybe even some naked kayaking if the weather holds up…” Sam was smirking at Gabriel by the time he finished speaking.
Gabriel’s pupils were expanding with lust at Sam’s words. “If we’re going to be fucking the whole time, why do I even need clothes?” they asked, grabbing their leather jacket and throwing it on. “Let’s just get going!”
Bridging the Gap Between Belief and Convictions
James 1: 22 “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (NKJV)
James 1: 22 -24 “Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.” (Message Bible)
I’ve been reading Mark Buchanan’s book “Your Church is Too Safe” published by Zondervan in 2012. It describes a pressing issue facing most local churches today as they become increasingly concerned about the waning influence the church seems to be having on the local community they serve in the midst of the current world-wide move away from faith in God to a more secular view of society. Increasingly, the local church in many towns and cities across the nations have been marginalized to a point where they are no longer viewed by governments or neighbors as relevant to the communities they serve. If you doubt that is actually true, check out the numerous polls that show that the average local church lost half of its membership as a result of lock-downs and despite their reopening over six months ago, their numbers today have not recovered to anywhere near their pre-pandemic levels. Add to that and with almost no objection from the public, or even the churches themselves, governments—both local and federal—have deemed church services to be “non-essential” yet, while closing the churches and proceeding to jail those few pastors who refused to comply, they kept beer and liquor stores open so that the public would not be denied access to those much more “essential” spirits. What a change this is from the dark days of world war II when the British army was trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk and the local churches all across Britain were packed to the doors with people praying for their deliverance from Hitler’s army. How many local churches were packed with people praying for deliverance from a deadly virus that shut down the world economy, ruined lives and businesses and supposedly threatened our very existence? On second thoughts, they couldn’t pack the churches because they were locked out! How many churches today are packed with people praying for sanity to return to the minds of those in authority who are pushing godless agendas that force compliance with every kind of evil activity from unfettered abortion to same-sex marriage, gender denial, critical race theory and a host of other insanities like pregnant men and trans-gender sports? Ten years ago, being “woke” was a joke to any reasonable-thinking person but now it has become a yoke around the necks of those forced to comply with its insatiable demands for the destruction of all things righteous.
In times like this, we Christians need to ask ourselves, “How do I and my fellow believers meet these cataclysmic changes head on with the saving Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ?” We confess we believe with the apostle Paul, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.” (Romans 1:16) but do we act like we believe it? So, first of all, we are not looking for a solution to the problem since we already know who (not what) the solution is but we do perhaps need to examine the means to implementing the solution and it is here that we need to understand the difference between our beliefs and our convictions. As a relatively young Christian back in the seventies, attending the local Presbyterian Church with my wife and family, we stood every Sunday morning to recite the Apostle’s Creed which is a wonderful summary of what Christians confess they believe:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell. The third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
I can still quote this from memory despite never having heard it repeated in any of the churches I have attended over the last 40 years but the question that needs to be answered is: “What do I mean when I say “I believe in God..?” In asking myself this question I’m in good company because the widely-known psychologist, Dr. Jordan Peterson is oft-times asked in his many public interviews if he believes in God and his consistent response is always to turn the question back on the questioner (and with some annoyance) ask him or her, “What do you mean by believe?” (actually, he puts it somewhat more angrily and says, “What the H—L do you mean by believe?”), his anger stemming from the questioner’s obvious lack of understanding of just how profound such a question is and that it should never be discussed casually like the weather. Looking at it another way, the world is full of people who say “I believe in God” but they haven’t a clue what such a statement implies or the commitment it demands. The story is told of a man who walked a tight-rope across Niagara Falls using a long pole with a barrel of water at each end for balance. When he stepped off the rope having successfully completed the crossing, a young woman ran up to him gushing with praise so he said to her, “Do You believe I can walk back to the other side?” to which she gleefully replied, “Yes, I do”, so he emptied the water out of one of the barrels and said to her, “Get in!” That’s the only test to true believing—you put your life on the line because you are convinced your belief is true. It’s also what changes your beliefs to a convictions. Saying to myself or to God or to others, “I believe in God” immediately begs the question of how committed am I to that belief and how do I know it to be true for me? Truly believing in God comes from two things: a belief you hold proven by a conviction that holds you and shows itself by the life you live. Believing in God is much more than a thought to be believed, it is a conviction to be lived. I can gladly tell others I believe Queen Elizabeth is head of the Commonwealth but that belief, like many other beliefs I hold to be true, carries no personal responsibility no matter how true it is but to say I believe in God must surely have some evidence in my life that my belief means something, else what’s the point?
It is in this regard that the church often fails to convince the world that we truly believe what we say we believe because the evidence that confirms our confession is hard to find. The world wants to see the reality of our believing before they will ever come to accept our message and rightly so, but unfortunately the evidence they want to see is often hidden behind the walls of the safe churches we occupy but it is in short supply in the world they live in. It is for this reason that James tells the Church in James 1: 22 “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” We are very good at the hearing part to which we respond, “Yes, I believe!” but we so often fall down on the doing part and the reason is we are not convinced that what we claim to believe is convincingly true. Have you ever noticed that Jesus commanded his disciples to heal the sick, not to pray for them. Most of us would rather pray healing for them rather than speak healing to them in Jesus’ name. Can you imagine the disappointment the cripple at the temple gate would have felt (Acts 3:6) if Peter and John had said to him, “Silver and gold I do not have but what I have I give you, so let’s pray right now and see if God will solve your problem but it may not be His will to heal you right now so don’t be disappointed if nothing happens”! If the local church is to reach its neighbors in these troubling days, it must step out of its safe sanctuaries and engage the rawness and rottenness of the world outside with conviction in the message it speaks. That will only happen as each us decides to transform our beliefs into convictions, convictions we are willing to stake our lives on. Verse 23 of James 1 gives us the means to accomplishing this, “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was”. The bible describes who we truly ARE as believers in Christ Jesus, not what we must strive by our own effort to become. The mirror James mentions is the bible, the word of God and like any mirror, it shows the image of the one standing in front of it but the mirror of the bible does not show us the image we have of ourselves in the natural—according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit who dwells within us. Remember Gideon who was threshing wheat while hiding from the Philistines and the angel appeared to him and says “The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.” (Judges 6:12). I think Gideon looked around and thought, “Say what? Are you referring to me?” God saw what Gideon didn’t! When we study the bible we see who Jesus says we are, not what we might become if we work at it —because “if anyone is in Christ, he IS a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17). I’ve often thought the Christian life is akin to enrolling in a university but the “University of Heaven” is one like no other because it gives you your graduation certificate the same day you enroll and then you are told to go out and practice what your graduation diploma says you are now qualified to do so because that’s the only way you can learn just how qualified you are. When we fail to ACT upon what the bible mirror shows us— because we can’t believe what we are seeing—we quickly set aside our beliefs and immediately forget who we truly are in Christ Jesus. Thus, we fail to act because we are frightened by the thought that this is how Jesus sees us but we cannot do more than say we believe it because we are unconvinced it could possibly be true. Yet, for each of us the only way to discover it really is true is to believe we believe it and then act upon it! A wise man once told me if you are going to doubt then doubt that you doubt but always believe your beliefs. If we don’t act, our beliefs will turn to doubts. That’s our challenge and our conundrum.
I pause in the middle of writing this to tell you what has just this moment transpired! Eleanor, my wife of 57 years, was recently fitted with hearing aids to compensate for some mild hearing loss she now has. As a typical Scotsman, I balked when I heard the price of the hearing aids ($3,000.00), especially considering they are the size of a small grape which means they are more expensive than gold! However, being more concerned that my wife really does know I love her, I canned my native canniness (some might say miserliness) and bit the bullet to make sure she got what she needed, so two months ago they duly arrived. Alas, last night at bedtime, she discovered one of them had fallen out of her ear and she had no idea when or where this had occurred since she first put them in her ears around noon that day So, the potential location of the missing earpiece was anywhere within a several mile radius of our home since we’d been shopping and had dinner out with our two daughters. We searched the house, the car, the garbage, the restaurant where we ate, the sidewalk, everywhere we could think of but to no avail. Yes, we also prayed, though somewhat half-heartedly, thinking that although we believe prayer works, we weren’t convinced it would work in this particular circumstance. That’s a problem we often have with how we act on our believing, we lift and lay our beliefs according to the circumstances we are in. If there’s not much risk in acting on it we act but if there’s great risk attached to our believing we hesitate because the risk somehow nullifies our faith in what (or better Who) we believe. We initially prayed in hope rather than faith because we thought that even the Lord Himself might have a problem locating the hearing aid in such a huge area.
This afternoon, we phoned our daughter, Susan to give her the bad news about the hearing aid and her reaction was simply to pray and remind the Lord how many times He had found other lost items over the years like misplaced pills, glasses, etc., and now would He please find the lost hearing aid. As she was praying, I was downstairs in our backyard pottering around and happened to glance over to our small pond where I spotted something floating on the surface—the lost hearing aid! I grabbed it and rushed upstairs just as Susan finished praying to lay the prize on my wife’s hand and then I think we all cried happy tears. How good our Father is to His children—and He has no favorites!
Belief and Conviction
There’s a vast difference between belief and conviction and Mark Buchanan tells an interesting story that illustrates this. His wife had bought him a birthday gift of one flight with a para-gliding instructor which he excitedly arranged as soon as he could. When the day came, he and his wife drove up the mountain to meet with the instructor and then helped haul the equipment that last half mile to the top of the cliff. Soon he was harnessed in with the instructor who instructed him how they were going to run toward the cliff edge and keep running right off the edge of the cliff so that the upward wind current would fill the parachute and carry them aloft to soar over the valley below. So they began, “On the count of three... one, two, no wait”, he hesitated, “Do you guarantee we will fly?” he asked. “There are no guarantees but I’m convinced we will fly,” he replied. Start again, “One, two, no wait, are you sure this will work?” “Yes”, said the instructor and on the third attempt they were off and running for the cliff edge. As they reached the edge, the wind caught the parachute and lifted them high over the valley while the instructor told him to quit running now that they were airborne. They soared and dived for some time before finally landing exhilarated on the valley floor below. What an awesome thrill it had been for him but it also taught him a lesson about beliefs and convictions. While standing on top of the cliff, he believed he could soar but at the same time he was free to lay aside that belief as he almost did twice but once he was over the edge, that was no longer possible because to lay aside his belief while in the air and disconnect from the harness would have been suicide but he had no intentions of doing so because he was now convinced his belief was absolutely true and he could stake his life on it but he could only know this because he had put his life on the line by stepping off the cliff. We hold many beliefs but it is our convictions that hold us but to know this for sure we must step off the cliff. The disciples in the boat believed they could walk on water but only Peter was convinced and even then he almost dropped the belief he held in the angry waves. The Lord is looking for those who will put his Word to the test by stepping out of the boat or jumping off the cliff. The whole world is looking for the same thing from the Church. These hard questions must be answered head on by each of us as we examine who we think we are and who Jesus sees us as. My business-owning father told me the story of telling one of his workers he was being promoted to foreman. The worker immediately began to protest that he was not fit to be a foreman and protested that he didn’t feel he could live up to the responsibility to which my father replied, “There’s only one job for you in this business and that’s as foreman”. My dad could see in this man that he had all the characteristics needed to make s good foreman but the man himself, could not. I think many of us take the same approach to what the Lord Jesus asks of each of us—to get out of the boat and get on with the job even if the “boat” has four walls and a roof with a cross on top.
