Linktober Day 15: Favorite Character

Let's all give my girl, Impa some love. I think she's underrated, and honestly, she's my favorite LoZ character next to Link and Zelda.

This is the first fanfic I ever wrote featuring her and it's been sitting in my drafts for ages. Hope you like it 💗

A sick princess has her two bodyguards beside themselves with worry. For a brief moment, they allow themselves to stop being strong.

Link was standing in front of the door, just to the left of it at his assigned post. He didn't look the same as the knight who'd stood watch at The Princesses door everyday for the past four years, though. He wasn't in uniform, since he was taking no rest breaks and no one could leave or enter, he, Impa, and Purah were freed of many formalities. Also, his posture was slouching, his head down, his eyes on the floor. Impa felt a stab of pity for the boy.

"You're still out here?" Impa asked.

He looked up, his mouth in a thin line, and nodded.

"I'm surprised The Princess is allowing you a moment away from her side, Sir Knight."

Impa held two cups of warm coffee. She'd expected to share with her sister; they'd been spending a lot of time sitting around snacking in this hallway. She handed one to Link.

He dipped his head in thanks and took a sip. "She's sleeping now," he said.

"Why don't you take this opportunity to go wash up and eat a hot meal, then?"

He blinked at her as he drank the coffee. He swallowed and frowned. "I can eat here just as well. And I washed up this morning, Impa. Why? Do I not seem like I have?" He grinned shyly.

Impa stepped forward and raked through his hair.

He winced as she brushed through the tangles with her fingers and she laughed.

"You look like you haven't slept in weeks. Since we aren't in polite company, you look like hell."

Link shook his hair back into place and messed it back up. He finished off his coffee and sighed, falling and letting his back hit the wall.

Impa stood on the opposing wall and sipped her still-full cup.

Link rested his head back and closed his eyes. He stayed that way so long Impa thought he might have fallen asleep.

As if reading her mind, he opened his eyes and cut her a look.

They conversed in silence in the glance they exchanged. He wouldn't leave her side. He'd suffer as long as The Princess was suffering. Impa couldn't convince him otherwise.

Impa was a few years older than Link and Zelda. She felt much older, since she was on in her teens and buried in responsibilities while they were still brats playing together all day. But at some point, Link had caught up to her. He'd grown up in the past year. Life had been hard on him and he carried himself differently now.

It was a shame. But Impa liked being understood finally, instead of treated like a stick in the mud.

"I know you love her," Impa said quietly, gazing into her rippling coffee.

She felt his shock, felt him staring. It passed like mist, and he was resigned to her words, shoulders slumping.

"I don't love her the same, but I love her very much. She never had a mother. I was the one who brushed her hair and taught her manners and helped her say her prayers at night. She is my heart, Link." Impa drank her coffee just to push down the lump in her throat. "I don't think anyone in the world loves her as you and I do."

"Mm."

"I'm sorry. I know it's very hard for you."

He cleared his throat and moved to lean against the wall beside Impa. He crossed his arms.

Impa looked sideways at him. "There's no point in talking about it, really. All day long me, you, and Purah take turns telling each other that she'll be alright. We just have to..." her voice broke, "keep a brave face for our Princess."

Impa released a sob and Link threw his arm around her and pulled her close. He still hadn't caught up to her height-wise, so she rested her head on his as she cried.

She felt him shaking under her weight, too, and it broke her heart. No one had been as positive and unflinching as Link. Even knowing how he struggled internally, how he must worry, there was still something scary about seeing him break down.

Impa pulled it together after only a minute or two, and when she straightened up, Link patted her back briskly, let go of her, and wiped his eyes on his sleeve.

She couldn't see much of his face through his moppy hair right beside her, but she thought she saw a smile on his lips.

She socked his arm. "Go take a break. You've seen what medicine the doctor is giving The Princess. She won't wake up for hours. I know you'll be beside yourself the whole time you're gone, but go anyway."

Link gave her a hesitant, quizzical expression.

"It'll do you good. Go eat a proper meal and clean up so that you actually wet your hair. You'll be bright eyed and bushy tailed when she wakes." Impa smiled at him and wiped a stray tear that had rolled down her chin.

Link exhaled a heavy sigh and stared at the floor in thought.

"Go," Impa said.

He pushed off the wall and headed towards the staircase, then stopped short. He turned on his heels. "Impa—."

"I'll have you brought back immediately should anything change."

He dipped his head and continued on his way.

Since Zelda became a light dragon at the very beginning of Hyrule, you ever wondered if any of the past links and zeldas saw her in the sky? Imagine her past self and link seeing the light dragon and they don't know the events that will occur for it to happen

Yes, i had the same reflection as you: Did other incarnations of Zelda and Link saw the Light Dragon? I also wonder if witnessing legendary moments of Hyrule's history left some marks on Totk Zelda after she turned back. I love brainrotting on the LoZ. Each new entry adds pieces to the neverending brainrot cycle. And time travel has its share of shenanigans: Totk's time travel implies there were technically two master swords at the same time during games. Did Zelda herself created her beloved Silent Princesses?( Well, i like to think so)

Something something, Princesses throughout Hyrule's history claim seeing the gentle silhouette of a dragon roaming the sky. The vision would give them comfort, hope and courage in moments of hardship and adversity.

okay but the unexplored potential of a revali and purah dynamic

revali is so keen to be the best of the best and push himself past all conceivable limits, and purah wants to find the limits of sheikah tech and magic only to barrel past them and nearly become god

so one day, purah comes to revali "how high can medoh fly?" and he pauses bc he hasnt thought about that much, which he realises is asinine how has he not thought of taking her higher "well her resting altitude is x but its possible to go higher, though i dont know her limits" and they just look at each other bc well now they have too know-

and it continues like that, purah coming to revali with questions about medoh or the rito or his wind magic or eventually just requests for assistance "i need you to fly this up there for me, clear out this monster camp, ect ect" and revali loving the attention and the chance to show off, and that hes able to prove himself as truly better (he often tries to rope in the other champions to compare) and purah is loving all the data and the chance to work so closely with a pilot and they both compliment each others personalities quite well, both sassy and intelligent and where purah is overbearing and bubbly revali is insecure and sulky

anyway this is all pre calamity stuff, i want them to be very good friends and cause chaos together and push each other to constantly better each other, and purah would scoff at revalis creative insults but internally laugh and file them away to use later, and revali may act uninterested when purah talks for hours about conclusions shes come to and different approaches they could take hes actually paying complete attention and thinking of ways to use this knowledge in piloting or training

thinking thinking zelda not being conscious of how much hyrule has changed over the past hundred years, how everyone still alive from back then has moved on and made their lives and the only person she can hold onto doesn’t have all his memories back and is essentially a different person because of it

thinking thinking zelda having to come to terms with her past, the present times and what the future holds for her while felling stuck/left behind, getting through the guilt and grief she never got to process and trying to find where she fits in this hyrule that is so familiar yet So Different

Funniest thing about Skyward Sword Impa is that we never even once see her win a fight. Like she's framed as such a badass and talks so much shit but she keeps getting her ass kicked by Ghirahim. I've fought Ghirahim. He's bad. Impa why do you keep losing to a guy whose main attack is strutting menacingly.

I feel like I kind of missed the mark of Impa fucked-upness in my current first draft of thralls episode 2 btw, where I have a golden opportunity to do just that. I wanted her to reveal herself as being capable of being a bottomless pit of a person, and I don't think i fully achieved that yet :(
