Wajahat Ali and Yusuf Zakir at The Left Hook:
If you listen to Donald Trump, Maga Republicans and lazy comedians, DEI is the modern-day villain. It’s a wicked and terrifying Trojan horse of wokeness that is seeking to “replace” Americans and indoctrinate our children with a subversive agenda. It’s allegedly orchestrated by transgender people, immigrants of color, Muslims, Black people, Jewish people and feminists – anyone that isn’t straight, white and Christian. According to the president-elect, the rest of us are “poisoning the blood of our country” and destroying it.
DEI is an easy, direct and convenient way to package all of these fears. If you fall for this narrative, it can be terrifying and feel unfair. Events such as the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank, the problems with Boeing aircraft and the destruction of the Francis Scott Key bridge in Maryland were blamed on DEI. This was a con.
Instead of pointing to a corrupt system and deregulation that benefits the wealthy at the expense of many, DEI was seen as the culprit. The bad-faith talking point is that had DEI not existed, these tragedies would not have occurred and real Americans – who are not “woke” – would be safe and economically prosperous. Unfortunately, the deception works as companies such as McDonald’s announced this week that they are renouncing their previous commitment to DEI. It was just revealed that anti-DEI shareholder proposals have tripled since 2020. In reality, DEI refers to three simple but important words: diversity, equity and inclusion.
Diversity is an outcome. Equity is the path to get there. Inclusion ensures we travel that path together. Diversity represents varied identities and differences, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability and veteran status. That means white people, Black people, straight people, gay people, rich people, poor people and more. Equity is the allocation of resources and opportunities and the elimination of barriers to create a path towards equality. The concept of equity acknowledges that there is not a level playing field. Inclusion is creating an environment where everyone is welcome, respected, supported and valued. It is about bringing people together and creating safety and belonging. It is, by definition, the opposite of exclusion.
[...]
Several years later, we see that organizational commitment to DEI has waned. For example, in addition to McDonald’s, Harley-Davidson and Ford recently announced that they will curb some of their DEI efforts. With the continued rightwing political onslaught against DEI and Donald Trump’s election, this could be the moment when many organizations decide to pull the plug entirely. This would be a major mistake.
For organizations considering this decision, we would like to remind you that DEI impacts your talent lifecycle, your culture and your economic success in significant ways. We need to remind US workers about the benefits of DEI as we risk losing them entirely. First, companies have to find and recruit the best talent and as such they will naturally have to cast a very broad net. DEI encourages and helps this outreach. Talent is everywhere, not just among children of politicians, the privileged class or those lucky to attend Ivy League schools and live in wealthy zip codes. DEI encourages us to look beyond traditional (and often archaic) measurements of success, such as SAT scores, and consider the hidden jewels of talent that exist everywhere.
Second, because hiring is so expensive and time-consuming, DEI helps organizations try and retain their valued employees. Equity is a key component that recognizes everyone has different skill sets, talents, strengths and weaknesses. By recognizing this, addressing it and supporting it, DEI helps employees maximize their potential. Studies have repeatedly shown employees are more likely to stay when they feel like they can grow, advance and continue to break through glass ceilings. [...] Costco is an example worth following. Their board unanimously recommended that its shareholders reject a proposal that would require Costco to report on the risks of its diversity and inclusion goals. In making this recommendation, Costco noted that DEI efforts help the company attract and retain employees and improve its products and services. Those who make DEI into a bogeyman paint society as a zero-sum game: a slice for you means no slice for me. But, that is a narrow vision fueled by fear, greed and ignorance. Unlike Trump, DEI views America as generous and limitless. It’s in the best interest of corporations, organizations and US workers to adopt such a vision if we truly want to become great again as a nation.
Love this column in The Left Hook on why DEI makes businesses better, despite what right-wing polemics say otherwise (*cough* Robby Starbuck, Christopher Rufo, Elon Musk *cough*).

Nely Galán's journey reflects a profound and inspirational narrative shaped by the challenges and traumas of immigration. Leaving her country under difficult circumstances deeply affected her and her family, impacting their mental health significantly. Immigrants often face numerous stressors, including discrimination, acculturation pressures, financial instability, and the loss of social networks, contributing to mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and acculturative stress. Providing adequate mental health resources and culturally sensitive care is crucial for helping immigrants navigate these challenges and integrate successfully into their new environments.
Despite these hardships, Nely thrived and contributed positively to her new community. Taking a pragmatic approach to life led her to a series of successes and helped her discover her mission. Initially, she focused on sharing the stories of Latinos in the United States, highlighting this community's unique experiences and contributions. Storytelling can be a powerful and motivational tool for fostering understanding and empathy, as it humanizes the immigrant experience and brings attention to the diverse narratives that make up the American tapestry.
In the second phase of her life, financial literacy became Nely's new mission. Financial literacy is crucial for economic empowerment, especially for immigrant communities facing financial stability and growth barriers. By promoting financial education, Nely aims to equip others with the knowledge and skills to manage their finances effectively, build wealth, and achieve financial independence. This shift in focus from storytelling to financial literacy underscores the multifaceted approach needed to support immigrant communities holistically.
Nely's journey from trauma to mission-driven work illustrates the resilience and determination of immigrants who, despite significant challenges, find ways to make meaningful contributions to society. Her story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and serves as an inspiration and motivation for others. The importance of providing support and opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their background, is highlighted through her work. By sharing her experiences and advocating for financial literacy, Nely not only honors her journey but also empowers others to navigate their paths with confidence and resilience

Throughout the history Kurds have lived under many different nations’ sovereignty. The separation of Kurdistan following World War 1 led to different cultural aspects, and dialects of Kurdish language appeared. In their own homeland, many Kurds needed to cross the borders in order to cultivate their farms or visit their families on the other side of the border. Bahman Ghobadi in the analyzed films studied such notions as being an immigrant in your own homeland, search for identity, and struggle for survival by working in minefields and engaging in smuggling activities.
Identifying Kurds since the beginning of the 20th century is challenging. Kurdistan has been separated between four different countries, the national identities of the Kurds have been re-shaped, and four different borders (Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria) have become their life stories. One of the most famous Kurdish film directors Bahman Ghobadi depicts the Kurdish identity through these borders in his A Time for Drunken Horses (2000) and Turtles Can Fly (2004).
The stories of the Kurds have always been related to the motherland, free Kurdistan and borders since centuries. Cultural identities of the Kurds have been shaped through these borders struggling to retain their language and culture in the countries they live in. However, in each country Kurds have faced oppressions and massacre since 1920s. They were forced to emigrate and were not allowed to speak their native language. The assimilation policies have serious impact on today’s Kurdish identity.
“In their attempts to suppress Kurdish identity and revivalism, Turkey, Iran, Syria, and Iraq have used many forms of repression against Kurds with varying degrees of success. More effective than either political oppression or economic exploitation, cultural oppression has proven itself a weapon by which Kurds may be prevented from asserting their identity.'”
“They have suffered discrimination, marginalization and assimilation in each of the states in which they reside: Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria. In each of these countries, the nationalism of the sovereign dominant ethnic group has fed the official ideology and each national ideology has endeavored to establish a homogenous nation state.”
Thus, Kurds structured their identities by revealing their otherness against the states which occupied them. This led to a different identity in each sovereign state where Kurds lived and fought for their freedom and ethnic identity as the struggle was against a different nation in each state: the Turks, Arabs and Persians. These cultural differences have also shaped the stories of the families, and the same people have been separated in four countries and these differences have served as the major subjects of Kurdish stories, literature and cinema.
Identifying Kurds in Bahman Ghobadi’s Films

The Death of Modern Community - Thoughts by Sarah!
Aristotle, the Greek philosopher said, “Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human.”
The push for independence and the need for individuality in the Western world is a double-edged sword. The western society is a place where everyone has the freedom to be creative and have the ability to express themselves without worrying about their neighbor and how they would be affected. Due to individualism, some people suffer isolation, caused by family members not visiting, not living a life that social media can portray, or an inability to feel comfortable connecting with most people. Here in the Western world individuality has been capitalized to the point where people have forgotten the true meaning of community.
Tumblr media
Growing up with immigrant parents, I was always surrounded by a huge community to support me in every way. No matter what I did, I remember my immediate and extended family being there. Whether it was a school performance for the holidays, a solo for my choir, or just my birthday. I used to think it was because I was the youngest child, but now I realize that my village of supporters was a mindset that my family brought from their different cultures.
I was raised constantly hearing words like “Harambe” and “ubuntu” whenever I felt like giving up. Harambe comes from my dad's side which is Kenyan. It means “When one child in the village does well everyone in the community does well”  It was a way of encouragement from him in some sort of way. With Ubutu I heard it from my grandfather after my grandmother passed on my mom's side. It is Ndebele for  “I am well, therefore you are well”. It doesn't make much sense in English but it still gives that motivation to do well. It also allowed me to see that I can fall back on my family for help.
Western cultures often prioritize individualism, self-reliance, and personal achievement, which fosters a strong sense of independence. Economic systems in these regions, particularly capitalist ones, reward individual effort and success, reinforcing the notion that personal achievement is paramount. The fast-paced, individualistic lifestyle many people lead today. People are often busy with work, personal commitments, and managing their own lives, which can leave little time for engaging with neighbors or participating in local activities.
The rise of digital technology, which, while connecting us online, often leads to less face-to-face interaction. For example, social media platforms can create virtual communities, but they sometimes lack the depth of real-life connections and can foster isolation.
Parasocial relationships might contribute to the feeling of isolation. Parasocial relationships are one-sided connections people form with media figures, celebrities, or online personalities. The media-driven culture around them can capitalize on the idea of being alone. In many ways, these relationships offer a form of connection that appeals to people who might feel isolated or lonely. Media figures and influencers often present themselves as accessible friends. While these relationships can provide a sense of connection and belonging, they don’t replace the depth and reciprocity of real-life interactions.
While individualism alone might not directly lead to the "death of humans," its negative impacts on social cohesion, mental health, and collective action can create significant holes in humanity. Parasocial relationships and the digital age have further exacerbated these issues by offering superficial connections that replace deeper, real-life interactions. To ensure a balanced and healthy society, it's essential to foster strong community bonds and emphasize the importance of collective well-being alongside individual pursuits.
Balancing individualism with a sense of community can help address these challenges and create a more connected and supportive world.

The Joy Luck Club (1993)
Tumblr media
The Joy Luck Club recounts the stories of four pairs of Chinese immigrant mothers and their American born daughters. The four mothers, Suyuan, An-mei, Lindo, and Ying-ying, make up the Joy Luck Club during which they eat, share stories, and play mahjong. The Joy Luck Club is based on the book of the same title by Amy Tan (1989).
youtube
The mothers fulfill the sojourner then accommodation mentalities as we learn about their lives in China then coming to America and adapting to the new environment. While each of them have their own reasons for coming to America, their struggles to provide better lives and opportunities for their families are shared. On the other hand, the four daughters, Jing-mei, Rose, Waverly, and Lena serve as the total assimilators as they have grown up in American society and adopted many of their norms despite their mothers’ efforts to instill in their daughters their own traditional values and experiences. The mothers’ accommodation is an exact example of the article’s mentioned “distinct Chinese American identity, one rooted in experience and a belief in a community with shared interests and a common destiny in the United States” (Stringer 427).
Tumblr media
Each of the mothers hope to leave their traumatic pasts behind by coming to America and using their experiences to properly raise their daughters and set them up for success. For example, Lindo was betrothed at four years old and forced to marry into a wealthy family at age fifteen who abused her for not bearing an heir. Lindo is able to escape by taking advantage of her mother-in-law’s superstitious beliefs and years later raises a family in America, including her daughter, Waverly. Lindo has high hopes for her daughter which Waverly at first fulfills by becoming a chess champion at six years old. However, Waverly interprets her mother being proud of her as pompous, overbearing boasting and decides to quit chess which both ruins her confidence, any chance she has at playing, and her relationship with her mother. This ruination of something that made her extraordinary and made her mother proud results in Waverly’s constant fear of never being good enough for her mother. This continues until Waverly confronts her mom before her second’s marriage (for some context, her fiancé is white and has disrespected Waverly’s family with his cultural ignorance like his insults of the food and not being able to use chopsticks).
youtube
Throughout the film, Jing-mei or June also faces this struggle of never being enough and throughout her childhood and even adulthood, has always been compared to Waverly. June also feels like she never lives up to her mother’s expectations first with a failed piano recital and more and more flaws over the years. June reaches her breaking point after Waverly rejects her business proposal and embarrasses her at a dinner party, and confronts her mother, believing that Suyuan implied Waverly has more style than her.
youtube
Throughout The Joy Luck Club, the mother-daughter relationships display how impactful the mothers’s pasts are on their hopes for the children’s future and the pressure that in turn has on their children. The Joy Luck Club depicts the struggle of living up to the American dream while retaining as a fixture in immigrant and Asian American identity. Regardless of economic status or other factors of one’s situation, there are always improvements to be made and possibilities for social mobility. The children and descendants of immigrants feel the constant pressure to prove themselves to their family even if their family’s high expectations come from good intentions and love of their children.
Even though many of the events of the film take place years before or after the events of immigration, how are the characters’ self-view affected by the move?
The four mothers meet at church after immigrating to America and form their own tight-knit community. How do these connections provide support while also challenging and threatening each others’ success in America?
The Joy Luck Club was made in 1993, do you feel that the portrayal of the Chinese Asian American identity still holds true today? How do you feel the portrayal of Asian American identity has developed in the media since then?
Several of the stories of The Joy Luck Club address the families making a place and a name for themselves in America. Why do you think it is important for the film to show the struggles they face in introducing others to their culture along with the struggles they face accommodating or assimilating to western culture?

As Time's 'Person of the Year,' Trump outlines his top priorities in lengthy interview
Former President Donald Trump has been named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year,” a recognition that has sparked widespread discussion across the political spectrum. In a candid and lengthy interview accompanying the announcement, Trump outlined his vision for the future and shared his top priorities as he seeks to shape his legacy and potentially a second term in office.
A Polarizing Choice
The decision to name Trump “Person of the Year” reflects his enduring influence on American politics and society. Time’s editor-in-chief, [name], stated, “Whether you support him or oppose him, there’s no denying that Donald Trump continues to define the political landscape in a way few others have.”
The announcement has drawn both praise and criticism. Supporters hailed the recognition as a testament to Trump’s impact, while critics questioned the choice, pointing to the controversies that have surrounded his political career.
Key Priorities Outlined
In his interview, Trump shared his plans and priorities, touching on issues that he believes resonate most with his base and the broader American public:
1. Economic Revival
Trump emphasized his commitment to economic growth, promising to bring jobs back to the United States through trade renegotiations and tax reforms. “America needs to be a powerhouse of manufacturing and innovation again,” he said. “We’re going to cut red tape and bring industries back home.”
2. Border Security and Immigration
Immigration remains a cornerstone of Trump’s agenda. He reiterated his plans to strengthen border security and reform immigration policies. “We’re going to ensure that our borders are secure and that immigration is legal and merit-based,” he declared.
3. America First in Foreign Policy
Trump underscored his “America First” approach to international relations. He criticized what he called “endless wars” and vowed to prioritize diplomacy while maintaining a strong military presence. “We’ll work with allies, but not at the expense of American interests,” he stated.
4. Energy Independence
Energy policy was another major focus, with Trump advocating for increased production of domestic energy resources. “We’ll unleash American energy and end reliance on foreign sources,” he said, highlighting the importance of both economic benefits and national security.
5. Free Speech and Individual Rights
Trump took aim at what he described as “cancel culture” and emphasized the need to protect free speech. “Every American has the right to express their opinions without fear of retribution,” he asserted, calling for legislative action to safeguard individual liberties.
Reflecting on His Presidency
Throughout the interview, Trump reflected on his first term, defending his policies and decisions while addressing some of the controversies that have defined his tenure. “I did what I promised to the American people,” he said. “We made America stronger, and we’ll do it again.”
Reaction to the Honor
Reactions to Trump’s selection as Time’s “Person of the Year” have been mixed. Conservative voices celebrated the acknowledgment of his influence, with [supporter’s name], a prominent commentator, saying, “Love him or hate him, Trump’s impact is undeniable.”
On the other hand, progressive leaders criticized the decision. [Critic’s name], a political activist, argued, “This choice rewards divisiveness and controversy over unity and progress.”
Looking Ahead
As Trump positions himself for a potential 2024 presidential campaign, his appearance as Time’s “Person of the Year” solidifies his role as a central figure in American politics. Whether he can translate this influence into future electoral success remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Trump’s political journey is far from over.

On November 15, Manitoba introduced a three-year pilot program to tackle labor shortages in its west-central region. This initiative involves partnerships with seven rural municipalities and Gambler First Nation.
Labour Market Goals
The program aims to recruit 240-300 skilled workers over three years to meet labor demands in various sectors.
Anticipated Impact
This pilot builds on the success of similar initiatives in Winkler-Stanley, Morden, and the Parkland region. While the exact launch date and criteria are yet to be announced, the program reflects a proactive approach to regional workforce development.

Blog 5: The Chocolate Factory Revolution: Technology and the Ghirardelli Legacy
Tumblr media
The technological revolution in the chocolate industry occurred in the 19th century, transforming an artisan luxury into a mass-market commodity. Inventions in the production process have not only democratized the consumption of chocolate but have also created global brands, several of which remain household names today. Among such companies is Domenico Ghirardelli, whose biography was the closest to the combination of innovation and entrepreneurship in the Industrial Era.
A critical achievement in the production of chocolate was when a chemist from Holland by the name of Coenraad Johannes van Houten developed a hydraulic press in the year 1828. Fundamentally, this hydraulic press separated cacao butter from the Cacao solid, providing a fine powder that could mix well with other ingredients. In this case, the innovation of mixing greatly changed the texture and consistencies of chocolate; therefore, over time, it allowed for drinking chocolate and chocolate bars to be made. Essentially, this technological development also reduced production costs, making chocolate more accessible to the growing middle class.
Besides, industrialization restructured how chocolate was made. Steam-powered machinery automated grinding, mixing, and conching, increasing production capacity tremendously. Firms such as Cadbury and Nestlé took full advantage of the new technologies to manufacture standardized products with predictable quality. By the middle of the 19th century, chocolate factories were producing confections on a scale unimaginable previously and met worldwide demand for this once-exclusive indulgence.
In America, the revolutionary spirit of chocolatiers was best epitomized by Domenico Ghirardelli. Fundamentally, this lowly Italian immigrant came to California during the era of the Gold Rush and, in 1852, founded his eponymous chocolate company. In this case, his factory introduced the Broma process. This method used gravity to separate cacao butter from the solids, thus enriching the taste and flavor of his chocolate even more. This makes Ghirardelli well-reputed through his commitment to quality and innovation, hence setting the basis for long-term success.
Meanwhile, during this period, marketing expanded chocolate's reach. The vendors positioned chocolate as a source of health and nutrition and thus fit for every age-from the crib to the rocking chair. Packaging innovations-from individually wrapped bars to decorative tins-made chocolate far more appealing and convenient for the consumer. Primarily, prestigious brands such as the Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar and Ghirardelli Squares led into comfort and pampering, bridging cultural and economic gulfs.
While industrialization did make chocolate widely available, it also disconnected consumers from the basic facts about cacao production. Only some consumers knew that all the stages involved in cultivating and harvesting Cacao were highly labor-intensive, considering that most plantations were in the tropics. This meant that plantations required a form of exploitative labor, including child labor and deplorable working conditions, reflective of the ethical concerns about the rapid growth seen in this industry.
Furthermore, the rise in the chocolate industry has caused enormous environmental distress: the movement toward monoculture plantation crops of Cacao has caused deforestation, erosion of the topsoil, and a loss of biodiversity. The ecological consequences of farming cacao-from colonial times to today-have mirrored agricultural practices to this very day, which tend to favor short-term gain to the detriment of long-term sustainability. The most notable projects in recent times, such as Fairtrade certification and agroforestry schemes, seek to mitigate the environmental impact driven by industrialization.
The Chocolate Manufacturing Revolution marked a very important milestone in the historical development of the commodity and overcame many significant difficulties. It introduced chocolate bars, bonbons, and drinking powders that turned the commodity's means of preparation and consumption. Mechanization not only enhanced production efficiency but also laid the ground for the evolution of an international market. Industrial production thus turned chocolate from a prestige delicacy of the rich into a widely available commodity, facilitating the widespread appeal and popularity it seemed to generate.
Firm releases like Ghirardelli spearheaded this change into high quality and varieties superior to pull in more consumers into the chocolate world. Refining production and building out distribution networks, such firms made chocolate cheaper and more accessible. When chocolate became common both socially and economically for more groups, it bridged those between the high classes and the low, and across cultures. By this virtue, the revolution of the chocolate factory reconstituted chocolate as a mass indulgence rather than that of an elite group.
The legacy of the revolution in chocolate making is at once inspiring and cautioning: it shows how the power of innovation can make a much-beloved product more accessible to the masses, even as it reveals some of the most disturbing human and ecological costs of progress. Because the chocolate industry keeps evolving, lessons learned during this period continue to resound today in their challenge to balance efficiency with equity and sustainability.
