Our trip was a success! We had loads of fun and I came back with a bucketful of local rocks and minerals to be made into unique hand ground paints. We even got to see some interesting wildlife, several deer, grey squirrels, and even a bald eagle! I did not remember to put on sunscreen, so I am unfortunately lobster red right now, and so tired! The mining field is roughly 37 acres of dirt and must be searched VERY thoroughly to get a good variety of the best stones! I will have to sort through my treasures tomorrow to see exactly what I've ended up with. Genuine Cinnabar pigment out on the slab, ready to be mixed into watercolor. The color is gorgeous, but take warning! Caution is needed with this pigment, especially in dry powder form as it is toxic. A mask and gloves are a must to make this color! I have an important announcement to make, my shop ImlothMelui (And the ImlothWatercolor line) will now be known as Rivervale Watercolor. I have been pondering a name change for a while now, as I felt I was outgrowing the name I started my shop under. I didn't make the decision lightly, but I've finally chosen a name that I feel better reflects the place where I live and work and create as well as my expanded interests in all kinds of art. (Plus it's a lot easier to pronounce!) I thank everyone who has followed my shop and my art, and I hope you will come to love the new name as much as the old one. I am so excited to share these next gemstone colors with you! I FINALLY have high quality Lapis Lazuli pigment from Afghanistan! I have been looking forward to buying this pigment for a long time, it has such a rich history behind it and it's a beautiful blue! For much of its history, it was the most prized if all colors, unobtainable except to the richest patrons. Once worth its weight in gold, it was used for the robes of only the most important figures in medieval art, usually Jesus or the Virgin Mary. Vermeer had a great fondness for it, and used it heavily in his work, the turban of "Girl With A Pearl Earring" is painted primarily in Lapis. I am making slow progress with the red jasper, I can only work with a few tiny chips at a time! They love to fly up out of the bowl as I'm tapping away at them, so there are frequent stops to find the bits before my cat does. Some chips give very good color, others contain a lot of barely tinted quartz and will powder down almost colorless if I continue with them. The last photo here shows my sledgehammer, you can see how much the sharp pieces have scratched it! I wonder if there's anything I can do to reduce the damage? Here's the olive green tuff finished! After levigating, drying, grinding and sifting the pigment once more, it seemed ready to mull. Removing the dried pigment layer from the plate I had poured it into was fun, it came away in big flakes like paper! The sifted pigment started off still a bit gritty on the mulling plate but quickly became much smoother under my muller. It has the same clay-like texture and low tinting properties of most earth greens, as expected, and a bit of texture on the paper after drying, although it doesn't really granulate. Chrysocolla pigment in preparation for mulling. Chrysocolla is very similar green to Malachite in that it is a very light tinting and low in covering power, with similar texture. I'm working on something very special this month! I am proud to announce that I have finally been able to order several rare mineral pigments, and I hope to have some pans available on a very limited basis sometime before Christmas this year. Genuine Malachite, Azurite, Cinnabar and grey and blue Vivianite will be available in a set, along with Jarosite, Thulite, and Côte d'Azur Violet. Individual pans of some colors may be available if I have enough pigment, but I'm not sure yet. The Malachite here needed further refining with my mortar and pestle for watercolor, but I don't want to grind it too much! The finer the particle size, the lighter the color! I have some Lapis Lazuli on order as well, although I do not yet know how much of it I will be able to make available my shop until I have examined it and know how much processing it will take. The only downside to these beautiful colors is the price, I don't want to give anyone sticker shock so I'll be right upfront with you all and say they will unfortunately be quite a bit higher than my normal line of colors, reflecting their rarity and the extremely hard work that goes into preparing them. Sketch I did a while back of a maltese tiger. I used Grey Kaolin heavily in the rocks, it's a delicate color but useful for scenery like that without being extremely opaque like Buff Titanium. I am still working on grinding enough pigment for the shop, hopefully I will have some available later this year. The other colors used were Prussian Blue, Yellow Ochre, Chrome Green, Lampblack, and as I didn't have any bright pigments in my handmade collection at the time, the green in the bamboo is Van Gogh "Sap Green". Another gossamer painting experiement, in which I learned some important lessons. I found out it IS possible to paint wet-on-wet on a spiderweb, but it's extremely difficult! Unfortunately my little galaxy painting suffered some damage this time. It's also possible to gloss it! I practiced on this cobweb painting since if it DID collapse entirely, as I half expected it to, it wouldn't be too much of a loss. But it turns out if you hold the spray can back a little farther than usual, it's gentle enough to deposit the gloss without destroying the web.
