Looking for something RANDOM to do with (or without!!) the kiddos on your next trip? Go diamond hunting. That’s right-in Southwest Arkansas, about two hours’ drive from Little Rock, is a state park called Crater of Diamonds. And you get to KEEP whatever you find. Now.... just remember that most of the diamonds found are closer to the size of a grain of rice than a sweet pea. (Translation: TINY!!) But the coolest part of the park to me was just digging in the dirt with my kids and seeing the OTHER kinds of rocks/minerals we found.

Our trip was a success! We had loads of fun and I came back with a bucketful of local rocks and minerals to be made into unique hand ground paints. We even got to see some interesting wildlife, several deer, grey squirrels, and even a bald eagle! I did not remember to put on sunscreen, so I am unfortunately lobster red right now, and so tired! The mining field is roughly 37 acres of dirt and must be searched VERY thoroughly to get a good variety of the best stones! I will have to sort through my treasures tomorrow to see exactly what I've ended up with. For our last post for this stop we will tell you about the restaurant located across the parking lot from the Crater of Diamonds visitors center, the Kimberlite Cafe. We had a couple of meals here during our stay including breakfast the day we left. 🚎 The staff was lovely and the atmosphere quaint. The food here will not win any awards, but it is easy, filling, and on property if you are camping or mining. 🚎 You will find things like eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits w/ gravy and pancakes for breakfast. Club sandwiches, BLTs, chicken strips, onion rings and tater tots and more is offered for lunch. They are not open for dinner. 🚎 We were pleased about the little things, sugar free ice cream for the little one and sweet potato tots for us, not to mention the fantastic service we received from the young ladies that work there. 🚎 Thank you Crater of Diamonds! We had a fabulous time. Our only complaint, the non-working WIFI for our entire stay, but we wouldn't use this as a reason to not recommend this park. We give it 🚎🚎🚎🚎 out of 5 RVs! Didn’t find any diamonds at Crater of Diamonds State Park today, but I had a great drive, learned that Glen Campbell was born in Delight, AR, identified future spots for exploration, found some nice quartz points, and now know that Footsie’s believes in truth in advertising!
