Genuine Cinnabar pigment out on the slab, ready to be mixed into watercolor. The color is gorgeous, but take warning! Caution is needed with this pigment, especially in dry powder form as it is toxic. A mask and gloves are a must to make this color! Mulling genuine turquoise. It's very, very light, even more so than Thulite, with no value range to speak of. It's pretty in it's own way, but more of a curiosity than a widely useful painting color I think, considering how expensive it is. Red Jasper painted out. This pigment is a rich red brown, similar in color to Burnt Sienna, perhaps a little redder. It's very textured with heavy granulation, since if it is ground too fine it will be paler in color. I'm very interested to compare this imported pigment with the red jasper I am grinding from local stone! I wonder how different they will be? . . Chrysocolla pigment in preparation for mulling. Chrysocolla is very similar green to Malachite in that it is a very light tinting and low in covering power, with similar texture. I am so excited to share these next gemstone colors with you! I FINALLY have high quality Lapis Lazuli pigment from Afghanistan! I have been looking forward to buying this pigment for a long time, it has such a rich history behind it and it's a beautiful blue! For much of its history, it was the most prized if all colors, unobtainable except to the richest patrons. Once worth its weight in gold, it was used for the robes of only the most important figures in medieval art, usually Jesus or the Virgin Mary. Vermeer had a great fondness for it, and used it heavily in his work, the turban of "Girl With A Pearl Earring" is painted primarily in Lapis.
