Today would be Abuelita Eva’s 100th Birthday ❤️👵🏼🎁 🍰🎁🎈🎊 • I miss this lady every day of my life and specially around Christmas and her birthday I miss her even more ❤️ • I am the person I am today because she shaped me to be a good and caring human being, to love nature, to love animals, to be humble and giving, to remember that Christmas was extra special because it brought the entire family and friends together, and to love unconditionally. We all went home after she passed at hospice so we could shower since we had been there since the first thing in the morning, I got home and got in the shower and pressed shuffle on my playlist and this was the first song that came on. My TBT is of my beloved Grandma Eva when she was around 40 years old. • She was such a beautiful lady inside and out, she did all she could to make everyone happy. DISCLAIMER: Please note that, just by reading this, you may succumb to the very phenomenon described here. My hope is that the next people or intelligent life who read this are either themselves resilient to it, or that enough time has passed that the sheer weight of this knowledge no longer causes such a heavy impact on the reader.

This is an attempt to record the phenomenon, once referred to colloquially as “ghosting,” that has resulted in a mass decrease in the Earth’s human population. More specifically, the latest estimate (prior to the disappearance of professionals who had counted) was that only 0.002% of human life remains.

In this series of accounts, I document interviews with remaining survivors of this phenomenon. For more details on the nature of the phenomenon itself, please click here. Otherwise or afterwards, read on at your own risk.

I actually encountered a woman by the name of Christina Arbordale by chance, while seeking the source of smoke coming from the woods at the edge of the city. I try to do a lot of my travel by foot in hopes that such a chance encounter might occur, and this time was not the first that I would reap the rewards of such a habit.

Christina appeared to be a homeless woman, holding a very small cardboard sign by the side of the road. I didn’t have the chance to read it before I greeted her from an appropriate difference. Her eyes widened as she cocked her head towards me. She smiled at me as though she couldn’t believe what she was seeing. I had a few provisions I’d packed with me for a later lunch, but upon seeing her, decided to offer them to her over an interview. She graciously accepted. As soon as I prepared the recording and pulled out a notepad to ask questions, I noticed she was already crying.

SH: I’m sorry, if now’s not a good time to—

CA: [waving her hand dismissively] No, no, now’s an excellent time. I’m just a bit happy, is all.

SH: Has it been a while since you’ve seen another person?

CA: No, actually— I saw a gentleman in passing yesterday afternoon.

SH: I see… then may I ask what has you crying?

(Taking a moment to clear away tears, Christina shows me her tattered cardboard sign. Only four words decorated its surface: “please just say hello.” Christina simply nodded as I took in the sign’s message.)

CA: I’ve been out here for years. A little before Ghosting started, you know. 

SH: Is that so?

CA: Your next question is why I don’t just squat in one of those fancy apartments a block over. [laughs] Well, I’m out here looking for something.

SH: Before I ask what that is— I’d like to ask if you’re eating and sleeping well out here. I see you’ve got a bit of a camp below the bridge, here.

CA: I am, thank you. The nearby food pantry seems to still operate, thanks to the ghosts.

SH: So, here’s the million-dollar question: what are you searching for by standing by the road like this all day?

CA: Humanity.

SH: Oh? You said you’ve seen someone just yesterday, but you didn’t seem particularly pleased to mention them.

CA: [smiles faintly] There was a living, breathing person, sure, but I didn’t find what I was looking for in him.

CA: I… I guess it would have to be ‘compassion.’ Maybe that’s the better word.

SH: Compassion. What does that mean to you?

CA: [slowly taps her sign] In all my time here, even before Ghosting happened, barely a soul would even look me in the eye. 

CA: I don’t know if it was out of pity, out of fear I’d harm them, or if the thought of homelessness was just uncomfortable to them, but no one ever stopped to say hello. CA: It wasn’t long before I changed what my sign said: “please just say hi.” Please, just say hi.

CA: So, when people started ghosting, my world wasn’t all that different.

(Chistina flicked at a tin can that had shown obvious signs of age.)

CA: See, their jobs continue to see their work get done. I’ve seen it— food, merchandise— it all just appears out of thin air. But I’ve never had a coin here appear from any ghost. Even the folks still here don’t want to look me in the eye.

SH: Do you think that may have to do with the way which the Ghost phenomenon is said to spread?

CA: Maybe. But with so few of us left, the least folk can do is smile at one another.

SH: That’s absolutely fair. SH: In my interviews with ‘folks still here,’ I’ve found a common thread that I believe keeps them from ghosting— Hope. So, if I may ask you Christina, what gives you hope, even now?

(Christina smiled at me— perhaps the warmest smile I’d seen since I’d lost my loved ones for Ghosts.)

CA: Sunny, right? Sunny— meeting you, alone, has filled me with a kind of hope I haven’t felt since I was a girl. If there are more like you still out there, then maybe humanity deserves a mulligan. You give me hope.

At that point, I took a deep breath and ended the recording. Christina held me close as I shared with her a moment of my own vulnerability. I hadn’t received such a compliment for a long time, and hearing these kind words caused me to feel the love which Ghosting had taken from me.

Christina told me that she better see me around again soon; I told her she could count on it. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have a friend, again.

And so, I continued my way to the woods. I had not left the city proper since Ghosting took the world by storm. Approaching the greenery, I quickly realized that nature was not as empty as society had become.
