New School Day Adventure Shaina Tranquilino August 27, 2024

The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a soft, golden glow over the sleepy town as Annabelle stood in front of her new school. The building loomed large and unfamiliar, its red brick walls and tall windows holding the promise of the unknown. Her heart fluttered with a mix of nerves and excitement, the kind that comes with any fresh start. This was her first day at Oakwood High, and everything felt different from her old life in the city. The sounds of birds chirping and the distant hum of cars were a far cry from the bustling noise she was used to. Annabelle adjusted the straps of her backpack, took a deep breath, and stepped forward, her shoes crunching on the gravel path leading to the entrance.

Inside, the hallways were a maze of new faces and unfamiliar classrooms. Students clustered together in groups, laughing and chatting, while Annabelle felt like an outsider looking in. She gripped the map of the school tightly, scanning it for room 207—her homeroom.

As she walked, she caught snippets of conversations and caught glimpses of students decorating their lockers, slipping into their familiar roles and friendships. It felt as though everyone already belonged, except for her.

When she finally found room 207, the bell had just rung. She hesitated for a moment outside the door, then pushed it open. The classroom was filled with chatter, but it quieted as the teacher, a kind-looking woman with short, curly hair, welcomed everyone. Annabelle slipped into an empty seat at the back, trying to make herself as inconspicuous as possible.

"Welcome to a new year, everyone," the teacher began. "My name is Mrs. Hart, and I'm excited to get to know all of you. I know that starting a new school year can be nerve-wracking, especially if you're new here. But remember, this is a fresh start for all of us."

Annabelle felt a small sense of relief at Mrs. Hart's words. A fresh start. That's what she needed. She glanced around the room and noticed a girl with dark hair sitting next to her, doodling in the margins of her notebook. The girl looked up and caught Annabelle's eye, giving her a friendly smile.

"Hi, I'm Kelly," she whispered as Mrs. Hart continued talking.

"Annabelle," she replied, smiling back.

"First day here too?"

Annabelle nodded, feeling a little less alone.

As the day went on, Annabelle began to relax. In each class, she found herself speaking up more, asking questions, and even making a few more friends. She discovered that the other students were just as nervous as she was, and they were all looking for a place to belong.

By lunchtime, she and Kelly had found a group to sit with, and the laughter that filled the cafeteria was infectious. Annabelle realized that Oakwood High wasn't as intimidating as it had seemed that morning. The new beginning she had feared was actually full of possibilities, of friendships waiting to be made and stories yet to be written.

As the final bell rang, signaling the end of the first day, Annabelle walked out of the school with a lightness in her step. The golden light of the setting sun warmed her face, and she smiled to herself. She had taken the first step into her new life, and it felt like the beginning of something wonderful.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? I have two places I have wanted to visit for a long time.

I would love to sit on the coastline in Maine, listen to the surf, and drink coffee while wearing a heavy wool sweater. I've wanted to do that since I was in middle school. I read an article about Maine in National Geographic and was mesmerized by its beauty.

I’m such an emotional mess

I’ve been saying a lot less

every time I get in my car I want to cry

texts + people, I could reply

but I just sit on my bed and stare at the wall

excuses excuses I always recall

“I don’t have friends”

my lie ends

I see my phone and the texts

which always suggests

it’s not them it’s me

more alone time I foresee

I can’t get the energy to reply

but I always retry

“I’m sorry I’ve been MIA”

I’m sorry for being this way

echoes in my brain

how do I begin to explain

the feelings I get

that make me upset

can’t move from my bed

feeling like I’m dead

but the texts aren’t from friends

my heart sways and bends

they’re from people who don’t care

aren’t even aware

that I’m crying in the shower

sobbing on and on by the hour

I wipe my tears and turn the water off

if people saw they would scoff

I think they would sneer

so I wipe my tears and disappear

paint on a smile

change up my style

because I’m just a clown in a circus

with no other purpose

they don’t want to know my woes

they just want to see the shows

they want entertainment and fun

they leave once it’s done

I swear I won’t put on shows anymore

but I’ve said that before

I know tomorrow I’ll put my red nose back on

attempting to make a bond

I’ll do my best to make it work

even daring to change my quirks

making all the conversation

open communication

I’m tired of trying

Question: What do you do to overcome the feeling of being socially isolated from neurotypical people?

Someone in a Facebook group asked the following question recently:

What do you do to overcome the feeling of being socially isolated from neurotypical people? I do my best but I still feel like an outsider.

Here is my answer:

In my experience it helps to find groups or social situations where people are accepting and inclusive of diversity, regardless of whether people are NT or ND. When I used to be religious, I found churches with a mix of different cultures/ethnic groups were often a lot more welcoming and accepting than all white/Caucasian churches. Even as a white/Caucasian person myself, I found this made a big difference. I am not religious any more, but I find this principle often holds true in other groups as well.

I generally find it helps to connect with people outside my immediate peer group in terms of age/demographic too, as there's less of a competitive vibe and people aren't going to attempt to jostle for social status as much. I've found groups with people who are older than me are often more welcoming and supportive than groups of people the same age. Of course there's exceptions - I usually find LGBT meetups are friendly and welcoming regardless of age, but there tends to be a high percentage of ND people in those spaces anyway.

So yeah, I find looking outside your usual peer group demographic (whether in terms of age, culture, ethnic group, or otherwise) tends to make a big difference. I find if I put myself in a position where I'm not threatening anyone's place in the social hierarchy, things are easier and go more smoothly for the most part. For what it’s worth, I suspect this issue is a big part of the reason why ND people often say they get along better with the opposite sex. They aren't directly competing for status in the same way.

As well as that, trying too hard to fit in by masking excessively can sometimes backfire. If people don’t like me as I am, it’s unlikely that masking is going to suddenly win them over. Of course, do your best to be polite, respectful and considerate of others. Avoid saying things that are rude or inappropriate. However, I find if people don't accept me as I am, performing to win their approval isn't going to suddenly make them like or accept me.
