Long angst-ish university AU prompt for your OTP

I keep thinking of a scenario where the inseparable high school sweethearts A and B end up going to different countries for university/college, and make the effort to keep in touch despite the long distance between them.

At first, they both keep spamming each other with pictures, finding the cultural tidbids endearing and fawning over their respective campuses, dorms and sightseeing spots, basking in their newfound independence - but as soon as classes start, they find less and less time for each other, and don't really have the time to keep tabs on one another anymore.

A has always been more outgoing of the two, so they fit right in from the start - they truly feel as though they've started LIVING, they rave about every lecture, they're constantly tagged in pictures of outings on social media and they find a part-time job as soon as the circumstances allow them to. They visit every nearby city in their new region, their Sunday nights go by as they (try to) study with their colleagues, sharing snacks and childhood stories as a bonding ritual. They miss B - they really do - but they truly believe that the self-reliant B is having a similar, maybe even better experience.

Whereas... the shyer, more timid B is quickly pulled back from their honeymoon phase into reality within as little as three months. Their new colleagues are nice and polite, though they don't feel themselves clicking with most of them; the lectures are fine but overwhelming, and getting shitfaced in a loud crowded club is deifnitely not as fun as they thought it would be. The one potential friend they made drops out before the end of the first semester, claiming that this education program was not what they expected. And really, B is FINE, the exams go FINE, the new environment is FINE, EVERYTHING IS FINE, B tells themselves one April morning as they contemplate staying in bed and skipping lectures for the fifth day in a row, fully in denial about their own depression.

So when A and B finally reunite after an year for the summer vacation, the bright-eyed, vivacious A has so much to tell that they don't know where to begin, seemingly reborn by their newfound independence and lifestyle, as if... happier. Without B.

A takes their dear B's silent discouragement as their usual timid reluctance, so they invite them to speak out first, curious to see what experiences the detail-oriented B has had, unaware of their inner turmoil. But really, having spent the last few months in a grey, desolate haze, alternating only between the echo of the lecture halls and the confined, narrow space of their own door room, what can B even say?

Favourite thing

Boldsushi! SASSUSHI! I love how unapologetically cocky and no-bullshit he gets when surrounded by utter madness and at some (many) points he feels like the only reasonable person in the room. He is also literally the most unique and lovable (once you get to really know him) protagonist I've ever read. My boy is so complex and to me, out of the whole cast, he feels the most like a real person.

Least favourite thing

Atp I adore canon Atsushi so much, the only thing I dislike is his fanon perception. In particular - people who just do not get why he's a compelling protagonist and not a "weak pathetic crybaby." I am pointing knives at everyone who still dares to STILL utter those lies this after recent chapters.

-> I love this one because of how blatantly wrong he is. And by wrong, I mean having an unhealthy mindset plagued by deep-rooted trauma, and this being the only way he's learned to cope. That's why he's a fascinating character. He's not saying this as a "lesson" or "moral" to the audience, nor as an objective truth - he's simply stating what he believes in and what drives him to keep going. Obviously this is an incredibly dangerous life policy to have because if you surround yourself by people who don't have your best interest in mind, and you rely on them to tell you what your worth is and why you're allowed to live - then you're just doomed, you're playing with the hazard of life and walking the thinnest line between hope and despair.

I can get into how this also connects to Akutagawa’s influence on Atsushi as he, subconsciously or not, helps him grow in the direction of living seperately from his past and abiding by his own ideals (something that is mirrored by Aku's own struggles), seeing his self-worth and taking action EVEN if faced with his biggest fear of being alone, even when the world is against him and there's no one there to pat him on the back and tell him he did a good job, even when everything and everyone has fought for is gone and he's left to pick up the pieces and he needs to believe his strength goes beyond the tiger's prowess, that he exists for a reason and he is enough, he is allowed to believe himself worthy of going on...

...but this wall of text is gonna have no end, so maybe another time!

Kyouka & Atsushi. There is just no stronger familial relationship than those two and their influence on each other's lives is very sweet and very important. For me this hits especially hard in Beast and makes me tear up, just a bit (totally). I also regularly think about the crepe scene and it fills my heart with warmth and joy. Big brother Atsushi, my love, I will die for you (im almost starting to sound like yk who, jesus).

The hierarchy gap here is just too large, I feel. But I enjoy some cute fanarts here and there for fun nonetheless <3

Unpopular opinion

Considering my only habitat is sskk circles with very insighful people who understand his character mmmm it's a bit hard for me to know what is unpopular. But I'm gonna say that his flashbacks to the orphanage are not reduntant at all, no matter how repetitive they get, because it honestly feels like how a real person would experience trauma. It's not sugar-coated or glorified for the interest of the story, it just feels genuine yk?

Ok OK LIsteN. I think, and I am correct, that we as a fandom have failed spectacularly by getting over this panel WAY so soon. 1. Peak of Harukawa's new art style. Hands down. The softness of his features. The tender look in his eyes. The composition is strikingly dynamic and just heartbreaking to take it all in. There is a dream-like quality to it that makes it feel ethereal, yet it depicts a living nightmare.

2. Oh, the hand reaching out for Aku. The way he turned his whole body to face him mid fall. As if he's seeking comfort because he's scared to die alone and he's scared of leaving his partner, no matter if he knows his strength and believes in him with his whole being. The way there is not an inkling of regret in his eyes, because he's finally done the right thing. It's his closure, his retribution, his response to a sacrifice in his own name that he didn't believe himself worthy of. But now he understands. Need I say more?

In which I, of all people, make a post in praise of a love triangle

I hate love triangles. I HATE THEM. They never make any sense to me - either it's an OTP and an interloper (in which case it's not a triangle, go away interloper) or I keep going "make up your damn mind" and "why should I be invested in one ship when you aren't."

But Lost You Forever proves that like any other tropes I am not too fond of (slice of life comes to mind), it's not that I hate the trope per se, it's just that it's almost never done in such a fashion as to satisfy me and when it is...oh boy!

Because the love triangle of Xiao Yao with Tushan Jing and Xiang Liu (sorry, Cang Xuan, I love you, and I am rabid about the fact that the ML of this is not the romantic interest, but you are not ever a contender) makes me RABID. The acting, the writing, the possibilities.

In the first season, I never felt that Xiao Yao was in any truly meaningful way considering Xiang Liu as a choice for any length of time (I don't mean it NEVER occurred to her, I just mean it was little flashes that disappeared quickly.) But in this season, she very much does.

Why do I, the obsessed Jing x XY shipper love it so? Because it so makes character sense.

The reason she largely never considered him in s1 was because by the time any such consideration could occur, she already allowed Shiqi in her heart. There are flashes of what-if and the sexual chemistry with XL is off the charts, but she is hopeful and happy with Jing, she's experiences the giddiness of first love and first mutually accepted desire with him. XL is a what-if but a not a particularly longed-for one, if it makes sense.

But in this season, Jing broke her heart (whether she should have that attitude is a separate question of course, but she does and so here we are.) Which means that XY, heartbroken over Jing, has a little space and here is where it all starts coming rushing in vis-a-vis XL.

I love this because this is so so so so human and so realistic. As I was mentioning to @aysekira - despite demanding unrealistic permanent constancy of her loved ones, despite needing them frozen in amber forever, XY herself is not like that because few people are and it's healthy actually and she's healing! (Yes, Jing is not like that but to me that is actually a sign of how broken he is. Separate tangent tho.) And so yes, it's so human to, after a relationship ended, mourn and grieve but also on some level open your heart to other possibilities.

I genuinely believe that if Xiang Liu allowed himself to be with her, she would move on from Jing and be happy and fall in love with XL fully and eventually Jing be merely a memory in the corner of her heart (pleasant or sad, depending.) Just as if/when she and Jing get back together, she will move on about XL and he will be a memory the same way.

And it doesn't cheapen her feelings or their feelings or anything. It's just life. We are the sum of our choices.

I hate hate hate the concept of fated soulmates, of one perfect soulmate destined by fate. That's lazy writing, that's a crutch when you can't narratively show WHY these characters should be together.

And this show gets that. It gets it so well.

She could have been happy with Jing. She could have been happy with XL. Maybe in some other universe she met someone else entirely and was happy with them. Alternatively, if she remained a spoiled and petted princess of Haoling, she'd have never looked at Jing and most likely never looked at XL and they may not have liked her either (look at Nian - you cannot imagine either of the men liking her.)

Just as if Jing was never tortured into near-dissolution of his self by his brother, he would have been a very different person and not capable of winning her heart or caring to, or if XL had a different life, same.

We watch Xiao Yao heal and grow up (in a way, she's so emotionally stunted due to trauma, we are watching her going through her teen years in some ways - figuring out who she is and what and who she wants.) And I love that one of the ways she figures out who she wants is by looking at what kind of life she can have with that person.

What's the origin of your blog name? Is that just your username?

Nocturius is my artist-name since my edgy teenager years. As I still draw Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Steampunk/Horror, I think the name work fine for all that. I tried different things when i was at University but nothing really sticks. It's non-binary, it give a vibe. No one cares. I use Nocturius or Noctaël in most of my online presence.

For 8015Ficore, it's pretty obvious. I've put the 8015 for RC-8015 ''Fi'' in the name to separate from Nocturius. I didn't want a letters salad. ''ficore'' for Fi-Core, which is my coresona on FB and Bluesky.

I hope that my blog name is clear enough it's about that dumb clone and also my artist name being clear for the out-of-character/artist talking, like now.

Well, I gonna combine those questions because I'm not a shipper. I don't speculate much about couple or potential couples in a story. I don't imagine them with different person than what's in the canon. It's not what drives me in writing fanfictions/drawing fanarts. I'm cool with people doing it tho. Each person their hobbies.

Favorite color

For a long time that was more of a green-leaves. Like this:

But nowadays it's more like teal or turquoise. Those rocks made my brain very happy, especially the greenish ones with some stripes of yellow.

Favorite game:

I would say Stardew Valley is a nice one, but I want to talk about a very underrated one on the NES. A Zelda-like game called Crystalis from 1990.

Ahh... I have many. Usually some Pokémon themes, Final Fantasy or Kirby.

Last song heard:

I had to find that song about Kirby so...

I would say I like that channel with chipmusic a lot. Not all tunes are good, but it's a great filler for when I draw. Ehmm, yeah, I'm a lot into videogame music. Music with lyrics distract me.

Weirdest habit/trait:

I have some minor form of pica disorder. That might be a offshoot of my general anxiety disorder or in the list of ''Am I autistic?'' traits. Not enough to cause me real problems but it's there. I'm a terrible nails/skins biter. I do other weird stuff that can go under the dermatophagia I won't elaborate here.

When I was in elementary school, I used to often eat paper, fibers, eraser bits and wood. Well, I actually eat a tiny bit of paper just the day before i wrote those words and I use toothpick way too often to say it's totally gone. 😅😰

If you work, what's your profession?

I don't really have a job for now. Mental health is complicated. But I draw and write stuff. Sometimes people support me on Patreon (in French) and Ko-fi (in English) or ask for Art Commission.

Hobbies:

As drawing and writing are kinda my career, I would say hobbies for me is watching shows, reading comics/books and very amateur needle work (knitting/crochet/cross-stiches)

If you could have any job you wish, what would it be?

I just wish I could have enough energy and mental health stability to do my things regularly. If I could draw/write at least 4h/day every day, I would be happy. But someday, the best thing I can do is a cheap meme and I had to learn to accept my limitations and be proud of those small achievements.

Brainstorming stuff. I'm a ideas factory.

I used to collect books and comics for a while. Books of sci-fi/fantasy, animals and arts. I liked the idea of having a house filled with a personal library. But moving a lot as a student, flat to flat, made me reconsider my priorities. As I'm full on grown-up person lol, I decide to have a more curated one. Trying to ''KonMarie'' my collection with, still a lots of books, but less of the stuff I will never read. (often books people gave me). Sometimes I give the books that sparkle the less to my local  ''box library'' (public box where you can pick books or leave books)

Something you forget

I don't forget it often, but sometimes I forget to take my meds. It's just stuff for my thyroid but that make me feel weird when I skip it.

What's your love language

I'm a simple person. I like to care about people, making sure they are warm and cozy. Like with a blanket or a hot drink. Offering moral support. Since I created Fi-Core I realized how much I like to make people laugh and lift them up. My closest friends can only be reached online, so my love for them go through drawings and sharing pet pictures. I like to connect with people through art and sharing about life and feelings.

I love many animals. As a kid I was very fascinated by reptiles and snakes. Nowadays I'm happy with my two cats. I'm also an amateur beekeeper.

What were you like as a child:

I was feisty and nerdy. Didn't get along with the girls as an afab and wasn't accepted by the boys. I was bullied a lot and barely had friends. I had imaginary ones to keep me company. Books and my drawings. I don't have much good memories from my childhood.

Favorite subject at school:

History and later, art history.

Last Favorite subject:

French and English. I'm proud to be bilingual today but it's all my own work. I had a hard time learning English, very hard. French is my main language but the grammar always felt like it make no sense till university where I got actual explanations on some of the stuff.

What's your best character trait?

I don't know. I have the self-esteem of a shoe with a hole in it. I guess my sense of humor is probably in the top 5.

What's your worst character trait?

Way too much self-hatred I have to deal with daily.

If you could change any detail of your life right now, what would it be?

If I was able to have proper restful night, that would be very game changing.

If you could travel in time, who would you like to meet?

Maybe... Mary Shelley? She sound like someone I would get along with.

No idea. I read many things as a kid, but before my teenager years I didn't have a favorite one. I remember I was mostly fascinated by my father's books, atlas, dinosaurs and natural science themed encyclopedia.

i actually made a drawing of this before to try to figure it out! the ones not under #otp are not romantic but i think theyre important in me figuring out a pattern in what i tend to get interested in. i might be missing some ships here but in general i guess i like a genki character and a more subdued character dynamic, tis a fun contrast always ☺️ but theyre not all created equal... i get a little picky with what ends up being an otp. so its not set in stone what i end up liking 🤔 i can chew on alot of ships but have little attachment to them 💔 like in haikyuu... lol... even tho i was rly invested in haikyuu during that time.

other pairings i find to be dear from me but theyre straight from romance/yuri manga so i wouldnt put them in a ship list is majime and shijima from shimeji simulation, and also aono and yuuri from i want to hug aono kun so bad i could die. ☺️❤️

i think in general i like characters i can imagine in mundane scenarios. not necessarily domestic. more like a mundane care or a mundane misery or anything... im thrilled with codependence. im also thrilled with really real conflict and disagreement... i love love love contrast! so who knows with the pattern but thats the themes in the pairs i generally like to chew on

I stumbled onto FnF but read Mal de Mer first — I’m absolutely in love with everything. I discovered both beautiful stories recently and binge read it through because it is so damn good. With a free Zaun rising; has me spinning in a great way!

I don’t think I can articulate just how; without repeating the reviews on tumblr, on Ao3 or anywhere else you’ve posted. It’s incredible and revolutionary. Your take is what Arcane should have been.

Honestly thank you, the lore, world-building, characterisations, the snippets, the playlists, the art, Pinterest inspirations, the gifs and interactions I’ve seen with fellow readers. It’s everything. The Silco-centric stories has me living!!!!

I’m in awe and you are fantastic as a researcher and author. I never thought I’ll enjoy the pairing of Silco and Mel but now it’s like shimmer and I’m hooked. A rare pair indeed but intoxicating so I’ll be rooting forever after for their endgame as my OTP in Arcane (and Silco x OFC too).

I wish Mel and Silco had interacted on screen because that would have something special, added to the beauty that is Season 1 and I think alter “What could have been”.

I’m going to continue enjoying the Melco ride in FnF but can see the writing on the wall, even though I wish they were end game (badly wish they were endgame). Which is why I’m very, very happy that I still have Mal de Mer to obsess over (and its potential future sequel).

Their pull and push, their intellect, all for the compromise and the bridge between them and their two cities. Sapiosexuals hard at work shenanigans!

(I swear it’s not purely down to smut reasons alone. I think they make such a powerful couple, it’s tantalising to imagine the overlaps, variations and games between them as their attention and attractions deepen to something more meaningful. Even if they’re fighting their natures as they go down. It’s heady to think of and that they fall love as this connection grows, against their will initially; then they continue to choose one another and stay together too)

It also thrills me to no end that there are people enjoying the Mel x Silco ship. I'd wanted them to interact ever since seeing the way they both maneauvered through the corridors of power in S1, Mel in the light and Silco in the shadows. imo a team-up between these two chessmasters would've been full of delicious mindgames and epic sass.

I love the Silco and Jayce Parley scene in canon, but I think there'd have been a lot more room for fun stuff if Mel was involved, and it's such a shame the series didn't give us that.

As for future Silco x Mel stuff - I'd absolutely love doing a Mel x Silco fic, possibly a Mal de Mer sequel titled At Sea, but atm I'm pretty tied up with other projects, including the plotting for FnF. It's on my radar, tho, so fingers crossed I can get to it one day!

5. whats a pokemon you would like to play as or with?

I think an obvious pick for me would be zorua (have a lil eevee/zorua team going on) but on the offchance we actually get a new pmd game with the dex up to gen 9 (pls) i think some good hero/partner nonstarter picks would be mudbray, rockruff, wooloo, yamper, pawmi and fidough.

6. how do you interpret gengar and gardevoir's relationship post game?

as depressing as it is, I always thought that after saving gardevoir from the curse, gengar truly just lets her go and probably disbands team meanies to move away from pokemon square. Its the last time we see him, but I think he'd consider it giving gardevoir the gift of freedom of having fun as a rescue team without feeling indebted to gengar. After spending all that time under a curse bc of him, I think he'd want her new life to be something completely different, even if that means a life without him. Gengar finally understood the value of Gardevoir's devotion to him, and how much that meant, so I think the most selfless and devoted thing he could do in turn is just swallowing his pride and desires to start again and just let her live as an independent explorer. He'd turn over a new leaf too, and live as an honest explorer somewhere else, or maybe just travel around to find a new purpose.

I do like the idea of gengar and gardevoir starting completely fresh tho. He'd never tell her about her past life but they'd have a far more respectful and equal-sided friendship.

9. what do you ship in the games? just like. in general

HERO X PARTNER FO LIFERSSSS! Across all games, their relationships are just so wholesome and meaningful. I'm not a huge fan of predestination and 'soulmates' but i think the hero/partner connection is so beautiful, and how many times, they have to fight the universe into being together. I like to see them as rewriting fate itself in order to reunite post game, like in GTI and PSMD, where you or your partner has to actively go on a quest to bring the other back. I think its even sweeter if you choose to imagine its always the two same souls being reincarnated over and over again whenever the world is in peril, always great partners and friends who will get the job done bc they just work perfectly together. Platonic or romantic, its just quite lovely. Throughout all of the teams ive made while replaying the games, whether i imagine them as friends or something more, its also just great fun to picture their little conversations, how their personalities mix, and side adventures they go on.

ahem. besides hero x partner, i quite like wigglytuff x chatot for being annoying gay dads, as well as power couple umbreon x espeon. but of course the real otp is team tasty!!
