Wings

- 4w3 -

The 3 wing adds a spit of spark to the typically melancholic 4 core. A bit more outgoing and friendly. May feel envious of others more often. Want to have validation and praise for their unique accomplishments. 3 wing helps them set goals, which are usually aligned with expression and creativity. 4s want to make a mark/influence on the world and 3 wants to be successful in making that mark. They want their uniqueness to be seen.

- 4w5 -

4 and 5 are both withdrawn types, so it's no surprise 4w5s are often introverted and/or private. Independent type who does what they want. Can intellectualize their emotions. Can get lost in their own world as they are focused on building their creativity and skills rather than focusing on relationships.

Disintegration: 2

Disintegration to 2 can cause a 4 to lose sense of their independence, instead throwing themselves into relationships. They want to be rescued somehow without putting much effort into building genuine connections. Very clingy and intrusive.

Integration: 1

Integration to 1 can cause a 4 to become more objective and more bold to take actions towards their desired goals and dreams. They learn not to be trapped in their self absorptions. They learn to control/balance their feelings so they are less moody. Integrating 4s have a desire to contribute to the world and make a better difference rather than simply only doing things they want whenever they want.

Subtypes of 4

- Sp 4 -

Sp 4 is the most internalized and least expressive about their pain and suffering compared to the typical 4. They learn to deal with it by themselves. They want to be recognized and accepted for being so "tough" for not complaining about going through heavy things. They may instead look for those who are visibly suffering in order to provide empathy and help for them.

- Sx 4 -

Sx 4 is the most expressive and intense. They want to be their most authentic selves and chase after their desires. They are very deliberate in trying to attract others with their unique and genuine character - with the way they dress, act, any sort of self expression, they need people to like their uniqueness. They can be more assertive with their needs, which can be used to cover up the actual sadness they have inside. They have a deep need to prove they are worthy.

- So 4 -

So 4 is the most connected to their suffering and will openly show this. They compare themselves a lot to others and feel shame for not having the traits they envy. They want to be accepted but fear their flaws will drive people away. Inferiority and victim complex. There is a lot of inner conflict of wanting to be original and different but fearing having something wrong with them and longing for others acceptance.

Anyone who knows true enneagram has gotten past all the “image types are the tender and emotional ones” crap and seen the image triad for what it truly is: delusional egotism and narcissism that actually suppresses the emotions.

the reason we all lie to ourselves that the image triad is about “tenderness and emotionalness” “uwu sensitive arteest” “emotionally raw” is because we don’t want to face this dark truth… that image types are the least vulnerable, most emotionally repressed, most god complexy narcissists at their worst. Yes, especially 2 and 4. This is not just describing 3.

Now you may be wondering, after you have received your red pill on the image triad: “so what’s even the point of the image triad then? Isnt it objectively the worst one? Isn’t the image triad some sort of evil abomination that shouldn’t exist?”

I asked myself these questions for years & I have a ton of friends who ask themselves the same questions. I kept asking myself “what’s the point of the image triad” instead of concluding that it is a useless mistake, because I thought… well… enneagram is all about the balance of the universe. it can’t be true that one whole triad is just a mistake and an abomination of nature.

I realized that there is a reason why certain types (gut types and 6s) integrate and disintegrate into the image triad. They need to learn something from the image triad. There is a great importance to the image triad’s egotism after all, otherwise other types wouldn’t have lines to it. There is a virtue to be found in the narcisssitic madness. Even if I can’t find it. As a weak image fix, 86 or 96 (types which all have lines to the image triad) my development into a fully-balanced person depends on finding out what’s so virtuous about the image triad. So I decided I have to keep looking.

As my favorite awakening guru says, “we don’t need to get rid of ego, we need a healthy ego”. A lot of cultural propaganda from religion to the new age will tell you: EGO IS BAD! But actually it’s not. Ego is the thing that lets you not be controlled. That’s why so many people who want to control us, tell us that ego is bad and we should feel ashamed of ever forming one! Ego is boundaries.

We need a fucking ego. We also need awareness of the total chaos of the universe and our inherent egolessness. We need a balance of both. The image triad embodies the ego, and the gut triad embodies the complete egolessness.

The image triad’s problem is having too much ego. Being so obsessed with the ego that they forget their natural state as chaotic, spontaneous, undefined beings and think that “the ego is me”. Meanwhile, the types who integrate and disintegrate into the image triad, do not have enough ego. 6s and gut types do not build egos for fear that building any ego is bad, limiting, immoral and wrong (yes, even 8s. 8 is the over justice maker, all about a concern with right and wrong, and an inability to form any structure including their own ego structure). Gut types and 6s need to learn from the image triad how to build a healthy ego so that they can build boundaries.

this is such a great post 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 I would like to add that where 2 and 4 get murky is:

[2 and 4 have a line between them so you can expect a lot of overlapping behaviors and even overlapping core motives]

2s can play up being the “bad girl” or the “bad guy” in order to get attention, usually sexual attention. They’ll create some vampish, hearteater aesthetic out of their badness… thus falling back into the seduction trap, not truly embracing their badness and trying to be seen for it the way a 4 does.

2 and 4 both have “I’m special, look at me!” syndrome without even trying to back it up with the competency that makes one worthy of being looked at (for all that is wrong with 3s, at least they understand that you have to actually achieve stuff in the real world if you want everybody’s attention so badly). The center of “I’m special, look at me!” is 2, not 4. 2 in its default state is manipulating everyone around it for attention. 4 in its default state doesn’t even want attention, it wants to ponder its ideals alone as it feels rejected by the world. 4 wants to give itself away to an ideal or vision. 4 wants the grandiose ideal or vision to receive attention in place of the 4 themselves receiving attention. 4s start to demand attention for themselves and showcase how special they are when they disintegrate to 2.

2s and 4s can both have a “nobody notices me enough” victim complex; often the victim complex of 2s is even worse than that of 4s.

Centres: heart triad

The core neurosis of image types revolves around the idea of needing to earn love. Instead of being loved for who they are, they come up with constructing an identity and the next thing that happens is that they look for affirmation of their image games. This validation is mistaken for genuine love and appreciation. The defense mechanism has nothing to do with questions as to who they really are. If anything, heart types usually avoid “who am I” like the plague. This includes 4s as their supposed self-awareness is about overfocussing on negativity. 

Their construct is what they offer and how they want to control other people’s perceptions of them. For 2s, it’s about the self-image of being a moral and loving person, which is offered to the outside world for validation. 3s construct a self-image of someone who is always developing and improving themself. For 4s the validation is a paradoxical one as they seek this in terms of what they are not. People not understanding them affirms that they lack something and this suffering is what they use to get validation and sympathy.

Conscious manifestation has literally gotten to the point for me where if I think about something, it will literally just show up in my algorithm right in front of me. Not ads selling anything but people posting about verrrry specific tidbits from films or about people or concepts I've concentrated on. And they'll be things that are very random that are unique to those posters if I've been following them already.

It also happens with people. If I'm dead set on something, it'll be the topic of someone I speak to very shortly. I've had numerous 'i was just thinking about that!' moments that there's too many to track.
