i use clip studio paint !! version 1.0 i think.. whichever one is the one-time payment (the subscription model needs 2 DIEE)

& these are the brushes i use like 99% of the time: 1. Brush and various sets of fountain pen style (specifically 万年筆風ブラシと色々セット)" on Clip Studio (ID: 1679706). used for colors/rendering

2. AJ's pencil set (i use the remi pencil for sketching/lineart and the hard charcoal brush for coloring&rendering), ID:1807882

3. and the SU-cream pencil ! i rarely use this one anymore, but it used to be my go-to for everything. ID:1761353

if you're interested in other sets though, i've also used the wiggle brush (ID:1921094), thiccpaint (ID: 1707517), nacho pen (ID:1837572), and DAE pencils (ID: 1806000) here and there

posting these animations i did when i was trying to get used to using clip studio paint

im not sure if ill go back to finishing these so lemme write about the concepts i had in mind for those who're interested in readin about them...

the first gif was donnie telling casey how he figured out the estimates for everyone's ages with leo cutting in sayin "twins" (theyre not but yknow how leo is). i personally think theyre simply born in the same year (not like "oh im 5 minutes older" since how would they know?) which is enough for leo but i digress....mikey brings out a birthday cake and the turtles learn that casey doesn't even know what cake is (hilarious hijinks ensue)

second one is post-season 2 where the turtles are still moving to the new lair = donnie ignored his wounds all this time in favor of securing the lair, something he thinks is far more important than some silly cuts on his back. also medic leo!!! the reason there are no other brothers in the scene because leo is simply changing the wraps on don's back in the middle of the night because the former couldnt sleep :)

ive been rotating lucy frostblade in my brain. you did such a good job on her. i love how her vitiligo is reminiscent of frostbite and how her hairstyle is not only similar to historical styles from cold climates but also, because of the way she winds the braids into buns, looks like frost swirling on a windowpane!

tiny prompt for you: Ed and Stede have a “pamper yourself” kind of spa day

"You know," Ed said, pushing his sunglasses down his nose so he could actually look at Stede (the plastic sunglasses from Claire's were cute, but not great for actually seeing out of), "this is fun. This is really fun."

He'd thought Stede might be falling asleep at the other end of the bathtub, but at that he wrinkled his nose, reaching up to slowly remove the cucumber slices from his eyes. "This is fun," he agreed. "I think I heard a but coming on, though."

They'd just properly moved in together, and it had been a long fucking week. Ed had been living out of a drawer at Stede's place for a while, and when their leases were both up, they'd decided to go in together on a bigger apartment, one with room for an at-home painting studio for Ed and a big kitchen for Stede.

It had been a long week, full of moving boxes and painting and assembling new furniture, but now it was the weekend, and Ed woke up with a sore knee and Stede had a sore back, so they just...hadn't done any of that stuff today. A spa day, Stede suggested, and they quickly discovered they'd neither of them ever really had something like that before.

It had been pretty amazing, honestly. They'd gotten dressed in fun, comfy clothes, Stede choosing to just wear his favorite golden robe and Ed deciding to try out a soft, fun rainbow pastel skirt he'd been a bit too nervous to take outside the house yet. They'd made DIY face scrubs, did each other's hair up with fun hair clips, painted each other's nails, and now they were finally getting to chill in the bathtub they'd picked specifically because it was big enough for the both of them.

"It's a very silly but," Ed hedged, scooping up a handful of bubbles from their bath and arranging them carefully along Stede's chin.

"I love all your buts," Stede said, far too earnestly for a guy with a bubble beard. "Well - maybe one butt more than others -"

"I knew it," Ed pretended to groan, tossing his head back in faux dispair. "I knew you were just in this relationship for my ass."

"I mean, your ass is great," Stede laughed, "but right now I'm waiting to hear about that but."

"Alright, alright." Ed pulled his knees up, rubbing his pruned thumbs over the soap-slippery skin, looking down at the iridescent water. "This is really fun. But. It kinda feels like...I dunno, that I'm not supposed to get this. Y'know what I mean?"

"Mm, yeah," Stede hummed thoughtfully. "Like...like someone's gonna come in here and start yelling at us."

"Yeah," Ed mumbled, resting his chin on his knees. "That's it, that's the feeling exactly."

"Well." Stede got himself a handful of bubbles, and he put his right on the tip of Ed's nose. "That's not gonna happen. Because - because fuck anyone who says we don't deserve this."

It still sounded like Stede was trying to convince himself, too.

"Yeah," Ed whispered, and then - "fuck you, dad!"

"Whoo!" Stede cheered, accidentally flinging bubbles when he tossed a hand in the air. "Fuck your dad, and my dad - fuck you, Nigel!"

"Yeah, fuck 'im!" Ed whooped. "Fuck you, Hornigold! We're taking a bubble bath and there's not a damn thing you can do about it!"

"We're not getting out of this tub until we please," Stede announced. "Just try and make us! We're relaxing!"

"We're unwinding!"

Stede rested his hand on the rim of the tub, smiling when Ed reached out to lace their fingers together. "And no one can tell us we don't get to do things like this. Ever again."

Still hard to believe that, maybe. But even once they got out of their bath, they'd trade shoulder massages, and feed each other pieces of cake, and Ed would pout until Stede carried him to bed. And, as it turned out, Stede was quite right - no one would ever get to tell them they didn't deserve soft, sweet days like this, ever again.

Im so curious to know what your process is. Do you use math to map out the lengths of things from the image or do you just kinda feel it out?

at first i just eyeballed it, but for the past few 'builds' ive started putting more effort into matching the composition! its a lot of trial and error cause im an artist so i dont have a great way of exactly determining things, but this is how ive started recently:

i mostly slap the reference image on a canvas the same size/aspect ratio as my game window, then use the perspective ruler tool in Clip Studio Paint to trace the main structure of the room. i then deform grids (corresponding to the 20cm cubes that walls in hf2 are made of) onto the walls and floors to try and estimate the dimensions. i know that walls are usually around 2.5m tall and all doors in hf2 are 2m tall, so i make sure to match those to the grid and see how the rest lines up.

this process is very imprecise and small changes can make a huge difference cause i'm just extrapolating things. often i cant get the in-game grid to line up quite right with my "measurements" (because of lens distortion? rounding errors? the ruler tool doesn't guarantee perfect squares/cubes? still figuring it out) but i CAN use it to determine the height and approximate location in the room the picture was taken! from there i can start taking screenshots and overlaying them onto the reference image to trial-and-error my way to the closest FOV and to start making more precise adjustments to the size of the room and such

for example: in the littleton north carolina uh. anime den. the grid on the floor wasn't quite right, and i ended up having to make the room 1 block narrower on both sides. the doorway between the two rooms and the diagonal wall also needed some adjusting!

in the end i cant get it to be perfect, but i really enjoy trying to match the basic structure of the room as much as i can!

(also to make sure i take screenshots from the same space, i place down a kitchen cabinet for inner corners to back myself into, and then place a tiny clothing hook on the wall in the location my cursor has to be. i temporarily delete the hook to take screenshots and then just ctrl+z it when i'm done lol)

Painted in VR using Vermillion, honestly quite a frustrating piece, and looking back probalbly would've been better served in clip studio paint or something.

Still, im happy enough with the end result to try and submit it, along with the previous rick shades one for the 5 year anniversary stream next week (assuming they do look at fanart and assuming there is a straightforward way to submit it)

do you happen to have any tips on coloring comics? i often find myself getting frustrated and overwhelmed by everything i have to do, and it almost amazes me how other artists seem to handle it fairly well lol. divulge your secrets?

hello! i have a post about how I color here!

it can get really overwhelming, there's a LOT to consider when coloring a comic page. top things that make it easier for me are

filling in all the important characters and details with one flat shade (usually grey tones for me) so that I can clip my colors to it without worrying about staying in the lines. I do this as I go, as soon as the linework in a panel is finished it gets filled.

making color palettes for every character! I use clip studio paint, which has a color set function. every character, and sometimes important props or settings, gets their own set. when I do colors for an update I go color set by color set, meaning that if I'm starting with Loft, I'll color every instance of him across the update before I move on to the next character. Once every character has flats, I'll color the backgrounds and any new props that don't have a palette yet.

i say this all the time but. lasso fill. lasso fill. lasso fill

creating auto-actions for my shade and light layers! again a CSP thing but photoshop and Im sure other programs have it too. It doesn't do any of the actual drawing for me, it just creates all the layers at the click of a button. it cuts down on how many repetitive actions you have to do just to set up your file

number one thing is breaking the work up into manageable chunks. I think of everything as one phase in a pipeline that gets me towards the finish line, rather than a huge amount of work that needs to be done all at once. however, if I get really stuck on one phase, rather than wasting a bunch of time I try to remind myself to move onto something easier for a moment even if its out of order. So like, if I'm really struggling to get the linework done on one panel, I'll take a break for a bit and put colors down on a different panel. By the time I go back I've usually worked out what I was stuck on.

i've managed to get clip studio paint to work on linux! i was able to get it to work in the past, but there wasn't a way to download brushes from the asset store

i found a work around by exporting the brushes as .sut from the android version!

expect to see some art that resembles my older stuff!

i lorve linux but the main issue i've had is with clip studio paint specifically - this software. man

i've read success with using versions earlier than 2.5 because it doesn't use edge to render the launcher windows, but there's a few features from 3.0+ that i use a LOT (looking at the colour noise filter)

but not being able to use the cloud feature to transfer my brushes to linux was very annoying!! thankfully younger me felt bored and wanted to try android csp, so i did export my brush there at the time

i did try to use csp on linux a WHILE ago when i first swapped over, but i didn't have any idea on how to transfer my brush. i tried to remake it but it just wasn't quite the same?

anyway, turns out there's a little handy function to export brushes as .sut! i was able to grab my old brush, as well as some from the asset store i used a lot

i hope to eventually figure out how to export more stuff from the android version, but honestly im quite happy with this :3 i love krita but i missed clip studio

it's not perfect on linux - the 3d models lag when you select a body part (takes a minute for the gizmo to appear) and sometimes the popup windows . vanish but it works well enough for my use case!!

How do you take pictures of the whole dens in aj?

TOOLS REQUIRED:

screenshot tool (preferably with a timer delay. not required but greeky told me about this recently and it makes my job so much easier lol)

any sort of editing program, preferably with layers and opacity features. i use clip studio but in the past used ms paint. not impossible but way harder than other programs

STEPS:

pick your den of choice. any size works, just keep in mind the larger it is the more editing youll have to do. if youre able to, hide your animal behind a piece of furniture so you dont have to crop it out later.

get a small item, and open your snipping tool. set a delay, the number doesnt really matter but i use the shortest because im impatient 🤷 click to take a new screenshot, and before the delay goes off click and hold the small item. this hides the entire UI and gives you a clean frame of your den.

just go around the screen doing this, copypasting your screenshots into your editing program as you go along. i like to line them up as i go but if youre someone who prefers to do that afterwards then have fun. for the small item, just go back over after you've removed it and screenshot the area it was and paste it over top.

for each screenshot, lower the opacity to about 50% and try to line the pixels up with one another. for animated objects, screenshot on the frame you like best and just put that over top. large animated den sections like waterfalls or bubbles are a bit harder, try to get as much of them into one image as you can and try to frame match.

do it enough times, and you should end up with something like this! this one had about 14 screenshots total, but larger dens of mine such as my sky kingdom had.... 113 total. anyway, hope this helps!

Also , I was wondering what if sua gave Ivan a little more time like 3 months or 3 years to get till to love him/kiss him so we could have more time of them loving eachother secretly. I specifically think Till keeping Ivan in the fancy rooms for longer is fun, because till can try out all the things he says he wants to do just long enough to miss them when Ivan is gone

I personally imagine till braiding and brushing Ivan’s hair quietly (because I love the mental visuals of Ivan with longer hair) and putting 1 thousand little sliver clips in his hair as one thing I find really interesting! Or maybe till collecting beautiful clothes to dress Ivan in and having enough time for Ivan to try them on but not enough time for him to receive them tailored (and I was also thinking maybe till considers proposing to him, or at least asking him to be a concubine if that’s not allowed but he doesn’t get the chance to give the ring- just enough time to have one made)

i was thinking of having ivan be there for a month, but that's a kind of long time not to sort through feelings... so a week it was. ivan was practically bed-ridden and spent a lot of time asleep, so till would sneak in and brush and braid his hair and decorate him up. and, well, a lifetime of yearning for something, getting a taste of it, and then forever losing it...guys i'm sick why did i do that?!

happy ending time or i'm beating past me up (im making them eighteen its kinda weird otherwise)

the gentle feeling of his hair shifting along like waves in the ocean woke him up. the moon peaked in through the window, spilling its light across the room. the mirror reflected ivan, who was sitting and leaning on another.

the haziness of the entire situation felt like a dream; calming, slow. ivan's eyes were barely cracked open, irises focused on the mirror and the picture it reflected. his head was tilted onto a shoulder, legs saddling another's to make sure he doesn't slip from the very comfortable position he's in.

the brush glides through his hair, gently tugging on his scalp. ivan leaned in the slightest bit. it felt good. compared to his eyes, his lungs, his feet; this person was like a safe haven, a warm spring bath.

he watched as his hair was carefully divided and braided into a relaxed hair style, not pulled too much this way or that. as the end of it was tied with a silk tie, the other hand reached into a box. ivan didn't see it clearly, but if he did, he'd recognize several silver pins with details impossible to get underwater, each a different design.

throughout his midnight hair, stars were scattered across it.

the sound of pen scratching parchment lulled him back to sleep, forgetting the brief moment of awareness.

another painting hung in till's studio, depicting two characters. one, asleep, was in front and the clear subject; the second was behind, carefully pinning the last hairclip in place, recreating the galaxy.

till's pearl was his muse; from paintings to songs, it seemed as if creativity itself sprouted from ivan.

briefly, till fantasized a life where he and ivan would marry. in a month from now, they'd be engaged, and follow a two-year courting period until they're both twenty, and get married.

the entire empire knew he was courting someone at this point. he isn't sure what gave it away; was it the mass amount of jewelry and clothing and paints he commissioned? perhaps someone saw him carry ivan home? or did a servant gossip about it?

till paused, looking at the painting. he had a new idea, and all he had to do was wait for night to come and ivan to sleep.

flowers were delivered to the palace, where till arranged them around ivan's sleeping form. he let his hair fall naturally, but changed the clothing to be looser, as if ivan were floating on the water's surface. the moon carefully shone on ivan's face, giving a feeling of tragic beauty; as if ivan were a corpse on the water, surrounded by the flowers of loved ones.

...till readjusted the scene to make ivan seem immortal.

and, when he stepped back to paint it, he left a light kiss on ivan's forehead.

one night, ivan woke up during a scene. fully awake with conscious thoughts; it had to happen sooner or later.

this one... was a more dubious one that'd be stored under till's bed. his shirt was rucked up, pillow under his neck and shoulder blades to let his head fall back, hair splaying out. his pants were pulled down just a bit to show his hip bone, and the moonlight fell across him to paint a lascivious portrait. till had left marks of himself too; a cloth that lay across ivan's eyes with till's name stitched onto it, jewelry that till had commissioned himself.

ivan was briefly confused by the darkness, before realizing a cloth was gently laid over his eyes. confused, he took it off, stilling at the sight of till painting him.

"what are you..." he couldn't finish his sentence. his mouth had gone dry. the easel was positioned so that he could just barely see the painting, but the glimpse was enough.

there was an obvious artistic choice in it; in the way that ivan's pearl skin was pink, mouth slightly open.

the night ended with a kiss and a kiss and a kiss.

ivan discovered, the morning after, that the knives had completely left. his lungs stopped drowning in unseeable water, and his eyes no longer burned at the slightest disturbance.

till had paraded his fiancé, who wore a veil to shield themself from the world. it was improper to gaze upon them until they wed, after all.

I did go in depth in a previous ask, where I also linked back to yet ANOTHER ask, lol. I definitely encourage you to give them a read if you'd like! :)

But of course I can definitely add some more tidbits!

Besides playing around with clip studio's built in features (tone curve, approximate color, gradient map, etc.) Taking inspiration from real life is one of my favorite things to do. ^^

In fact it's possibly one of the best places you can get color reference from, because how you interpret it is entirely up to you!

For example with the celestial crystalfly piece, I saw these flowers near a supermarket, and a really lovely color scheme near the end of a sunset. (Besides the fact that I was daydreaming about painting Lumine if she collected all of the elements FHAHDGSHA) I didn't actually color drop for this piece, because I wanted to treat it like a study, and I was painting the flowers from memory because I didn't have a picture of it them the time.  I stylized it in the end but was very pleased w the result. ^^

And with this character design, I got color inspiration from a butterfly in a photography book that was on sale in Indigo.

So generally my colors don't always come from nowhere!

Besides that for all pieces, I personally also like to plan colors during the sketch phase!

If you're like me and you used to follow the traditional sketch > lineart > color workflow, but once you got to the coloring part you'd get stuck, try it! Once you have a pose and character in mind, add some lighter base colors. As you work on rendering the piece, build up your base colors with darker colors (or lighter colors for things like accents and highlights)

It's probably more suited to painterly styles, but I think you could definitely find a way to make it work if you prefer clean lineart. 

I hope this helps give you some jumping off points to think about!

Color is a bit of a hard area to give concrete guidance on because it almost goes hand in hand with style. You get more comfortable with it and find what works the more you practice.

And that's coming from someone who used to color/draw like this 8 years ago,,,,,

thank you!! and yes i usually have at least a vague idea of what i want in the story before i start, though a lot of it didn't become concrete until i started writing/things evolving from there. i made a big (slightly) vague timeline of the entire fic from beginning to (almost) end, and then i keep fleshing it out from there as the ideas keep coming to me/evolving, and for each chapter i make an even more detailed outline, and THEN i get started on the final chapter. so its a bit of a process bahaha, but the brainstorming is really fun!! as for any advice, im not sure. maybe just brainstorm/write down scenes and ideas that you know for a fact that you want to put in your fic, and then try to find a way to connect them to other scenes from there and work backwards. basically WRITE WHAT YOU WANT TO READ, cuz like im my own biggest fan fr, thats the most important part LMAO

LMFAO speaking of outlining future events.....this may or may not happen in the future/in an epilogue when clora is pregnant and she got those pregnant woman hormones that seb is fighting for his LIFE to keep up with HAHAHA

BAHAHAH in my fic (for smut reasons and so that they could be 17 when they did the nasty) i made clora's bday april 3rd and sebs february 12, so clora is an aries and seb is an aquarius (and yes i just checked and apparently they ARE compatible, so seb can rest. also i just read up on aquarius and damn it unintentionally suits seb so well?? LOL "Aquarius is undoubtedly the most innovative, progressive, rebellious, and humanitarian. " and "They have incredible energy, though they may not always use it wisely.
