Yes I do!!! I don't want to make a big post on Some Of The Stuff til the whole canto is up (if you are aware of this account and some of my recent postings it may become aware of what i am talking about) but ohhghghgh. This shit Re Awakened the naive cyanism in me!! I thought it was gone. I thought I was over Hong Lu! I haven't even been doing my dailies and weeklies as of late that's how out of it i've been. but NOPE!! We are sooooo limback babey!!

(i apologize for yapping about hong lu right off the bat. its not that guy's turn yet. it's don's world and we are all just living it, but with the way don's character is structured my brain goes more towards a "wait and see" approach for her. I know it'll be awesome and i Am invested but like. this is hong lu boobs dot tumblr dot com. I'm sorry women)

I'll put some basic stuff above the cut and then some more spoiler-y stuff below.

HUGE fan of the presentation this canto. PJM continues to get crazier with this stuff every canto and this is no exception.

In the light of that previous bullet, I am fully expecting some meta fuckery here. They've pulled some cool stuff at the ends of cantos 5 and 6 but. this is the sinner about delusion/unreality! I Live In Fear of whatever pm is cooking.

The setting is also REALLY fun. whenever I saw a new battle bg i was cheering and clapping. they're all so fun and whimsical and there's so much potential for interesting things

I really like seeing how people dress in the north of the city! We've had so many new factions/branches of factions thrown at us so far and I love a lot of the outfits! Will this still hold true when I try to draw them and get upset at the level of detail after drawing standard formalwear on pm characters for so long? Maybe!

The CGs have been really clean so far? As an artist I get worried about this stuff sometimes because it's a lot of work to get done but all the ones I've seen so far are really nice :)

If you aren't reading passives and status effects this canto. do that. my brain might be a little too small atm to comprehend some of the gimmicks w the main enemy type but some of the wording in the enemies passives may be hinting at things. Also some of them are really funny

this Might be my favorite direction they've taken the OST? Honestly it's so hard to pick because this ost NEVER misses but I've been typing this whole thing to that one boss's theme (you know the one)

I am so intimidated anytime the screen goes black and I have to deal with various colored text and Scary Voiceover. I cannot say much on it aside from just how scared i get whenever it happens. I'm pretty bad at identifying voices (especially if i don't understand the language) but these lines just get. so interesting

I don't have a ton to say on it especially because anything I say can be proven wrong Very Quickly and I am not a don quixote scholar but I think the "Please, please! I don't want an adventure, stop! Please!" line from (who i assume to me) second kindred don is VERY interesting. much to think about regardless!

Yep, we've got identity stuff going on. Yellow seems to be Our Don Quixote (It's her text color, at least, but back then she'd be the bloodfiend second kindred, hence being able to obliterate that bear immediately, and acting less in line with the DQ we know and love) while red is... maybe the original don quixote? The original owner of rocinate at least,("Your running shoes look like they could fetch a nice price...") who seems obsessed with justice and fixers like ours. I haven't read the book so I don't feel like I can add a ton more to this aside from flat speculation but I am very interested in how this develops.

Ok now I want to talk about Hong Lu stuff. Let's ignore the elephant in the room for just a second :)

I'm a big fan of the exchange between Dante, Verg, and Hong Lu. THERE IS SO MUCH CONCERNING FORESHADOWING IN HERE!!!!! OH MY GOG. I can't handle it.

the specific wording of "the most lucid one" is SO interesting to me. fully expecting these cantos to be a True Combo. I was already anticipating it because they both have so much to do with rules and the boundary of reality and delusion but with the familial hierarchy theme present in bloodfiends its Definitely happening. And the light in Hong Lu's left eye going dimmer??? with the water theming being used??? Gloom/sinking themed distortion Please Please Please. you're nothing. Theres some water connections from the book irt the land of illusion (near the end bao-yu's enlightenment is seen as realizing that everything is akin to moonlight mirrored in the water- it ultimately doesn't matter and everything predestined to happen will occur regardless) and this water theming is present in Hong Lu as well (base ego) but it's really interesting to see it Like This.\

And now. there's probably some other stuff I can talk about but I wanna say things about The Elephant In The Room. If you follow my stuff and are caught up on this canto you know what I'm talking about.

I have been compiling a diagram with every mention of Hong Lu's family across all his dialogue. (which you can see here if interested, though it's now outdated for obvious reasons) We only really get vague mentions, the only direct family appearance is Jia Huan, who shows up to say one line and then fucks off.

I was not expecting to get stuff on Hong Lu This Early. They've been giving us mostly crumbs and I was NOT expecting to get hit by All This. I have been surviving on scraps and I just had the Hong Lu lore equivalent of a rotisserie chicken thrown to me. I'm kind of rusty on DOTRC because I haven't touched up on it in a while and as such I cannot give too many details but it's very interesting to see Xichun.

I'm going to check up on Xichun's characterization in the source later because there's so many characters in that book and she wasn't really one I had that close an eye on during my read. From what I remember, she's one of Bao-yu's cousins who lives in the garden with him, and eventually runs away to become a nun when the family starts falling into decline. (mirroring Bao-yu running away to become a monk for the same reasons.) I'm probably missing stuff I'll catch when I go out to reread the book, but based on how she's depicted here it gives me more of an idea about what themes of dotrc they're pushing for canto 8.

They're for sure emphasizing the familial abuse and how fucked up the jia family is. It almost reads like all of the siblings are in competition with each other (building "factions"). and Hong Lu has said his siblings have attempted to kill him before.

Hong Lu has been like this, which lines up with his book equivalent of Bao-yu, who is notorious for being childish/naive and not necessarily working within the pre established rules and conventions set up by his family. I'm curious how he's managed to survive this long with the jias a lot more willing to Kill Eachother.

"My most amicable sibling" fucks me up so much. what the hell is this family's deal man. I'm really curious about this line, because xichun is not a sibling but a cousin in the book. I'm curious what's gonna happen with Bao-chai and Dai-yu in Limbus because it's very challenging to adapt this story without those two. Dai-yu in Dotrc is one of the characters Bao-yu feels most comfortable being himself around. Generally, the female characters in DOTRC are better people than the male ones, and Bao-yu spends most of his time with the girls as a result. I'm curious how/if they'll adapt this because it's a pretty big thing in the book and they serve as an escape for Bao-yu from dealing with the nightmare that is people like his father. I feel if it was happening, they'd probably write Xichun a little kinder, but I don't know nearly enough to make any sort of call yet. Absolutely TERRIFIED (positive. this is a good thing) for what PM is cooking.

YEAHHH like you pointed out already limbus seems to be heavily focusing on lobcorp rather than lor since we’ve got two lc events compared to one lor event (although they could just be doing it in a pattern and the next one is lor)

I really hope they do start diving deeper into lobcorp lore because what the hell is up with the ordeals. what im getting so far is that ordeals are to abnormalities what peccatulum are to distortions, if that makes any sense. and the fact the white ordeals basically predicted the future with the library, and the midnight of white is an entire ass claw, how the hell did ayin get that?????

im pretty confident that a hypothetical sephirah meltdown event would firmly stick to the upper layer, mayyyybe tiphereth if we push it, but gebura would absolutely kick the sinners asses unless there are other nuggets around, which would be cool since the sinners have never had combat allies before

yeah yeah exactly!!! i think we might get more lor events, but the focus will definitely be on locorp -- that's the origin of the abnormalities, where it all began, and something we know little about in comparison to the library, which we saw built from the ground up firsthand more or less in lor; its lobcorp that still has so many mysteries around it, and given one of those is its ties to the smoke war, of which we have TWO (2) veterans of....it just makes sense to make it come full circle

which, again, ties into my ayin theory given that he is the beginning and so will be the end; the alpha and the omega.

YEAH tho the ordeals are fascinating, and absolutely how the fuck did the white ordeals happen. i think abel says something about them not being ACTUAL fixers/a claw but like. manifestations of the well of consciousness's representations something something. but even in that, like....how did they make them manifest???? and the lore we got in the event about how the ampoules/bullets work, that's delicious, and the bit about the regenerators....like, we're getting more lobcorp lore here then in lobcorp itself in some cases! esp about the agents!

which really really lends itself again to my theory because like, we're learning new things about lobcorp we didn't know IN lobcorp, while in the lor event nothing addressed there iirc was new to us, and that in and of itself says a lot.

yeah that could track bc they're the most straightforward in comparison to others in regards to mechanics. and oh my god oh my god that would be INCREDIBLE since thanks to verg in canto 6 we have precedence for npc assistance in battles. i would love that.

i just saw a post on twt relatedly talking about how strange it would be for ayin to see these randos show up to fight ordeals/etc and die and come back without his interference and god. GOD if we hear X on the intercom at some point i think i might just cease existing because that would be THE FIRST TIME IN THE ENTIRE FUCKING SERIES we hear him speak as a character because he had no voice in lobcorp and the narrator of the meltdown flashbacks was "A" not our boy X/the ayin i think is dante.

but like. fr tho. fr if we get a meltdown and dante does their thing like they do w the sinners thats it right there pack it up i win.

Learning to love ALL of Star Wars

I’ve grown a lot the past few years, and with that I’ve came to appreciate a lot more things about what I love. I’ve went from bitter and spiteful about what I don't have to appreciating what I do have, and at the centre of that storm is Star Wars. A franchise I’ve only really been invested in the last year. 

The beginning

So I was always a “fan” of Star Wars, sure. I grew up with the prequels and I was excited when Disney was releasing their new movies. But the past year is where I really got invested and found a whole new love for the franchise. And strangely enough, it was through the simplicity of Lego.  You see, I started watching videos by Brickvault about Lego Star Wars minifigures, and something about seeing the toys I loved as a kid from a modern perspective took me right back to wooshing my Jedi starfighter around my room. From there, I started moving away from Lego and dipped my toe in theories, lore videos and eventually discussion and review videos, the turning point being Cosmonaught Variety Hour.  Now, I have some opinions on the guy now, but Cosmonaught was perfect for me at the time. He was opinionated, entertaining, but most importantly knew his shit, and I liked that. His videos on Star Wars are pretty good, and really helped form my opinions back then... In a bad way... Now I’ll make this clear, this is NOT on Cosmonaught, it was just how impressionable I was as a person back then. I’m just saying how his video affected me on a personal level.  Up to this point I didn’t really understand the hate for the prequels besides the fact they were “bad movies” and “people don’t like them”. Cosmonaughts video on the prequels gave me those reasons, and I finally felt like I got the distaste for those films. However, like they say... A little knowledge can be dangerous, and boy was I about to learn that lesson the hard way... 

The fall

So here I am, knower of all things, the CORRECT things... I’ve watched my fair share of videos from a handful of sources, I know my shit. I’m making my opinions known, and I’ve become that friend.  But whats this! A dissenting opinion!? My boyfriend actually likes the prequels more than the Original Trilogy!? SACRALAGE!! I must prove him wrong! And prove him wrong I...! Did not... In fact, something rather bizarre happened... He convinced me.  I was stubborn at first, but I’ll admit, my wall got broken down at long last. He (bless his soul for dealing with me) managed to get through to me exactly what it was he loved about those films, and it wasn’t just the nostalgia. I had always seen the politics of the Galaxy like most other people did, some boring preachy nonsense that had no place in Star Wars, but I came around to it.  Granted with a little help from the Clone Wars I managed to piece together just what it was there was to like about these films... I wont say they’re perfect, far from it. But internally they have so much more going on compared to the Original Trilogy. The Era has some of the most fun and expandable concepts and ideas in all of Star Wars, and while it may not be as iconic, the visual artstyle of it all is still its own recognizable brand of Star Wars.  And almost like magic (or my phone spying on me) youtube started recommending videos that disagreed with Cosmonaught, and I got my first taste of how his video wasn’t as sound as I thought. Now as a side note: I still like Cosmonaught. He’s a funny guy who like I said knows his shit, but he obviously isnt the be all end all right and wrong which I hadn’t quite learned. I can enjoy his content while disagreeing with it, and I think thats just fine. I find myself disagreeing with a lot of creators I watch now and he’s just joined them.  But hang on, we’re missing something here... A certain... Mouse? Perhaps?

The dark times... The Disney Empire... 

So hop back to modern day for a sec, this timeline pretty much lines up with the end of the Disney movies right? So how do I feel about those? Well... When the first three came out, I liked them. Like everyone else I was loving new Star Wars. As a young art student, I loved Rogue One and TLJ for their stunning visuals, deeper themes and their attempt at something new and fresh. I loved the throne room fight scene, the light speed ram and how Rogue One had such a bitter sweet ending.  But ho ho no one else felt that way! And whether it be peer pressure or my love of dumpster fires my opinions changed like that. I laughed at the Rose Tico and Snoke memes, I hated the Canto Bight subplot and poor Luke being butchered on screen like that, and then there's Rey...  Solo came and passed. I refused to go see it, as I did with TROS which came out around the time I was getting back into Lego, and along with the prequels I was watching video essay upon video essay about why the sequels sucked and how to rewrite them. Some of them coming from a positive place, others... Not so much..  And so my hatred for them grew as I got back into the franchise and came to appreciate the originals for what they done great, and loathing the new films for lacking that same spark. And unlike the prequels, I didn’t really get enough pushback to change my mind. But what I did get was the full brunt of spite and hate the fans had for these new films, and honestly? It was depressing. 

Hate leads to suffering. 

I finally reached my rock bottom. I genuinely reached a point where I debated giving up Star Wars for the sheer amount of negative feelings I had towards the state of the franchise (which might I add is valid if you ever end up feeling that way about something you’re meant to be enjoying). 

I struggled to get past how Disney “ruined” Star Wars, and clearly nothing was going to change. 40 Years of history had been wiped out and the new timeline was a contorted mess, and the amount of discourse and disagreements in the franchise honestly did not help at all. 

Nothing was simple, everything had a catch. You like how Kylo was irredeemable in TLJ? Well he’s redeemed in TROS. TFA is a fun film but it sets up a lot of the things people hated about the sequels so you cant even just head canon that the other two never happened. And then...

Saved by Lego

There was Lego, making the best of a bad situation. It didnt care if you didn’t like that Palpatine was back (somehow), it didn’t care about the clunky prequel dialog, and it didn’t care about the thousands of retcons from the entierety of the franchises existence. 

Whether by contractual force or not: It was pure, distilled Star Wars. 

I loved how a set with Rey could stand beside a set with OT Luke and thats just how it was. It put into context that this was reality, and I could either be bitter about what could have been or accept what was, which wasn’t easy and I’m still not really over it. But I reached a place where I could accept the fun in all of Star Wars, that I liked how some of these characters looked, that these characters all existed in one Galaxy, and it was nice. 

And it led me straight back into... 

Learning to love Star Wars

One of the most important lessons I learned in the past year was trust your gut. Sure, hear out other peoples take on something, and if it changes your opinion all the more power to you. But don’t fight the fact you felt something in that initial reaction. I liked the prequels as a kid, so why don’t I as an adult? Is it because i outgrew them and see them for the disasters they are? Or is it because a someone who watched them as a fully grown adult that grew up with the OT was underwhelmed? 

And to that extent... I rewatched TFA and TLJ with an open mind and an open heart. The result? 

Im indifferent towards TFA. It has fun character moments and has a decent adventure, for what it is its good. But I actually found myself enjoying TLJ after all these years of hating on it. I liked their take on Luke, I liked the mutiny subplot, it didnt push the story forward leaps and bounds but it was a more methodical take on the franchise and for the I liked it. It wasn’t perfect, its biggest flaw is how bleak it can feel and its lack of doing anything interesting with its setting, but it does do a fair amount of decent things and I’ve come to appreciate it for that. 

I’m planning to watch TROS at long last soon, so maybe I’ll update it here. But what I will say is that I hope Lucasfilm don’t give up on the sequel era and characters quite yet. There is still a lot to love here as much as you may not like it, and I hope that they can explore more interesting meaningful themes and narratives in external media that they couldn’t in mainline films cough cough Stormpilot cough cough...

I know not everyone will agree with how I feel now, heck a lot of my problems I had still stand, but I’m at peace with it all now. I just want to sit back and enjoy this franchise for what it is. While I might not forgive Disney for its severe mishandling of... everything (a rant for another time) I’m content just not them supporting to the best of ability.

Star Wars is in such a unique position where each generation has a different stance and appreciation for different parts within the franchise. The prequels were hated until its fans grew up and started defending it, The Clone Wars was hated until its fans grew up and started defending it, and the sequels ended last year, their fans haven’t quite got their voice yet. But I’m interested to hear what they have to say.

But soon they were wrapped in an assignment that put them side by side with people who were against everything they wanted for the galaxy. The Resistance.

A RESISTANCE PILOT who had a far too close brush with death on a mission and now questions every since decision they make afraid that they will cause others to die once more. Afraid their abilities are far from enough to help anyone else.

A CYBERNETICIST who was making groundbreaking innovations with their new designs but they fell under the control of the Empire where their designs were taken for granted and used for purposes that were far from what they had intended. Used to patch up various experiments the Emperor had but now that Emperor Palpatine is gone… The freedom is liberating and they are churning out not just limbs but various new tech.

A FAMOUS HOLOSTAR that has used their fame for a cover. Their fame allowed them to rub elbows with those who had power and the capabilities to accomplish so many sinister things. By hiding in plain sight they were able to truly adapt that learned knowledge to play both sides against each other to their advantage. What happens to them now that the Empire is losing ground?

AN ARCHAEOLOGIST determined to explore the old jedi and sith temples scattered to see how the two factions of old really ticked. Somewhere along the way their force signature grew corrupted and twisted from the various polarizing energies the completely different factions had.

finn’s arc in tlj... wasn’t about him learning not to be a coward or selfish tho

his capacity for compassion and caring about other people was preestablished in tfa, yes: he didn’t shoot on jakku. he took a moment to mourn poe’s apparent death, basically everything that ever happened between him and rey. he promised bb-8 he’d get him back into the right hands before leaving for whatever far-off tail-end of the galaxy he thought would keep him away from the first order, and he fulfilled that promise before he walked away on takodana. 

he spent tfa trying to run from the first order, which had made up his entire world for his entire life and indoctrinated him from childhood to believe that anyone who wasn’t with it would inevitably be crushed. he did not leave the first order because he found a new cause to fight against them for. he left because he didn’t want to kill for them, because he knew it wasn’t right. 

he ran back towards the first order because rey was in trouble. when he turned to fight kylo ren, when that commitment came over him, that was all personal. ren hurt rey. ren calls him a traitor like it’s the worst thing in the world, even though the dude just murdered his own family, who he betrayed in aligning himself with the first order at all.

finn is goodhearted and kind and so much braver than he thinks he is, but he did not join the resistance at the end of tfa. he wanted rey safe. and he was happy to do the right thing re: taking down starkiller in exchange for the chance to help her, because he knew it was the right thing, but it didn’t change that he only wanted to go back for rey in the first place.

of course he wakes up and she’s his primary concern. last he knew she was unconscious on a soon-to-blow-up superweapon and he was he only thing between her and kylo ren’s lightsaber? when the resistance is in clear enormous danger against overwhelming odds, of course finn thinks “i need to make sure rey comes back to something safe and not a highly unbalanced battle that could easily destroy the falcon before she knows what’s happening” and tries to evac with the beacon. rey is the most important thing in his life right now. 

but like the SECOND he and rose work out what’s going on with the hyperspace tracking and that there’s a chance they could save what’s left of the resistance, finn is on board to do the right thing by them? and even if that’s because he knows rey will want to go back to the resistance at the end of the day, finn still does the right thing by it all. when he hands the rey beacon to poe, he’s saying “i trust you to keep this safe, and i’ll go out there to do everything i can to keep the resistance safe with it.” it is a moment of trust. it is a promise.

and to save even more tldr im putting aside the narrative importance of canto bight in a movie about failures, moving on from them, and preserving hope for the future (ie rose and finn inspiring those children and giving them hope for a better future even though they didn’t succeed in the mission they actively went to canto bight to complete, a future that maybe one day they’ll fight for or maybe one day they’ll be able to inherit). 

finn was raised to be a mindless one-point-of-view cog in a greater machine of war and oppression. he was raised far removed from the real world and fed a steady drip of bias/lies about it all. he was raised to lead a team down a ramp and shoot when ordered until something shot them down first. 

finn was raised to see this war from the battlefield and to know nothing about the greater reality. he didn’t have time to chill out and go “hm i wonder where the first order gets all the funds for this,” because the first order was need-to-know on that and he wasn’t high enough on the chain yet to need to know. the first order was his world since he was a baby. his whole life, the first order has just Been.

of course he doesn’t initially understand why canto bight is inherently bad. im pretty sure if poe or rose had briefed him before he got there on “yeah they’re all war profiteers and they do horrible things there and hurt innocent creatures for sport and oppress children” he would’ve had a different reaction anyway but like. they didn’t brief him. he and rose just rolled up into this nice-ass town full of beautiful things and laughter and stuff he hadn’t seen or experienced before. the most arguing he did in favor of liking it was to be like “i mean come on you gotta admit this is a cool place to hang”. 

and unsurprisingly once he got let in on the truth, he changed his mind and was glad they wrecked the joint.

canto bight for finn was about seeing the war from new perspectives. not from the POV of a one-battlefield-at-a-time soldier, not as a cog in the first order’s inevitable crushing of everything in its path, not as a proponent of any greater cause. rose AND dj showed him perspectives on the war he was raised to be part of: the perspectives of people who are or know what it’s like not to be on either side. the people who profit from not choosing one or the other, and the people who are caught in the crossfire. and once finn knows, he cares.

when push came to shove in tlj, finn chose his own greater cause for the first time in his life, and he immediately went all-out for it. he gave the inspirational speech. he was willing to lay down his life for it. 

finn’s arc in this movie is not about how he’s a coward and a deserter and a moron (which uhh he seemed really sharp to me esp towards the beginning of the resistance plot stuff when he helped figure it all out and recognized the beacon for what it was on sight). it’s about finding his feet in this war as himself, and the reasons he finds it worth staying to fight in. he owed no one any obligations after escaping what the first order did to him anyway. finn chose the right thing, again.

this movie has more than its fair share of flaws in writing, pacing and execution, absolutely don’t get me wrong. but i liked some of the questions that it raised, especially when it came to the arc it was trying to sell for finn. is it worth fighting the war just to smash up the fancy town, or is destruction only worth it when you guarantee the freedom of others? is it worth more to be there fighting alongside the people you love when that time runs out instead of going on a suicide run for them to try to buy more time? 

they could have done so much better by finn with this movie but i’m not against everything that we did get. he’s still smart, he’s still a good person, he still chooses love.

(also people do remember that finn got hit in the face with a staff and tased by a droid as part of his first meeting with rey before he could explain himself, right, like. this isn’t a first-time Bad Writing Decisions For Meeting Rose aesthetic, this is in fact a running Bad Choice.)
