Let’s say there was no Shrieking Shack.

Let’s say, every month, tiny little 11-year-old Remus went into a facility with side-by-side concrete cells, with chains on the walls and no lights and no windows.

Let’s say each time he had to sit in there and wait for the moonrise, not knowing when it would come but by the growing pain. Let’s say he had to wait in the morning again, until the guard made his way from cell to cell to finally reach his, open the doors and the shackles. 

Each month back at Hogwarts, dumped by the facility through the floo, Poppy Pomfrey would take his skinny arms and bruised knees and put him back together.

And he’d say “I’ve gone to see my family.”

But he’d be uneasy beforehand and damaged after, so the boys would start to notice. James because he loves easily, Peter because he’s shrewd and careful, Sirius because…

Well. Let’s say Sirius’ family aren’t like that. Words aren’t blows, he’d tell himself. When he sees his parents he doesn’t come back chipped and frayed and ripped up at the edges. Or maybe a little bit, but not like Remus.

Or let’s say he comes back exactly like Remus, only where Remus is quiet and defeated, Sirius gets angry. And that anger, with nowhere to go, shifts to Remus. Not into anger at him, but one for him.

Sirius stays angry for a long time.

When they discover it’s the moon - when they find out how it pushes and pulls at Remus’ insides like he’s a body of water moving back and forth with the motion of tides - Sirius turns his anger from a summer’s storm into a strike of lightning.

For all the times he’d asked about it, when Remus finally tells, it’s not a grand reveal. It’s just the two of them, Remus with a split lip still healing over and Sirius sitting on the palms of his hands because he wants to kill something. “It’s the moon,” Remus would finally say, some agency retained in a situation where he never has control. “I’m a werewolf,” he would say, and look at his nails, and Sirius would think oh and say “Oh. I see.”

The facility has no doors for dogs to sneak in through but one sits, every time, by the wall of the cell with the smell he knows, and whines along each howl he hears, and waits

The thing I respect most about Griffith Berserk is actually how ridiculously unsubtle with his hitting on Guts he is. Just IMMEDIATELY going up to him and literally grabs his face like "I realized I WANT you, now let me tell you exactly why." Like this isn't your typical suggestive homoerotic innuendo, this is just what he actually says. To the point Guts is just like, oh you mean like, in a gay way? And Griffith's just like... "*gay silence*" like idk you certainly can't blame the frustrating star-crossed lovers mutual piningness of their relationship on him being a bit too ambiguous about things or too cowardly to shoot his shot lol
