White Knight and the Art of Ruining Batman - Part 3/3

Characters (Part Two)

Dick Grayson

Dick Grayson in White Knight is mostly just an idiot and very volatile.

He literally runs into a destroying building and cares more about taking down criminals than making sure no civilians die. Not that this would make this better but he doesn’t even have a specific bone to pick with any of these villains in this universe. He's just angry™

Half the time on panel it's for him to get angry at Bruce and Babs to tell him he’s being ridiculous and ungrateful. Anytime Dick wants to yell or get his frustration out on Bruce, he gets chewed out about it. Even when it's like "let's stop him from doing all the destruction” Babs tells him that he shouldn’t have even had an opinion because Bruce “gave him everything”.

Dick is literally written to be inherently and constantly in the debt of Bruce as his father. A father that doesn’t really even seem to care about him that much, all things considered.

Meanwhile, Bruce  literally tells Harley he would “do anything to have what you do” referring to her biological children.

Bruce may call Dick his son sometimes in White Knight but it's all performative. Bruce would trade him away in a heartbeat for tiny little Harley Quinn's <3

In Dicks Big Moment in Book 2, he’s able to talk Bruce out of murdering Arazel, which actually doesn’t really work because Bruce does end up cutting his artery (but eventually not killing him which is good (if you remember this from part 1 of this meta)), but after two books explaining how Bruce and Dick aren’t close it rings hollow, and the only thing really given it meaning is your understanding of mainline comics. When we get to this point in White Knight, Bruce has repeatedly neglected to call Dick his family, trust him, or say anything positive about him.

Dick becomes a fascist cop by book 3 but idk im so numb i don't even care anymore

To add on to the writing of Dick, White Knight also changes his backstory and makes him the second Robin. This changes a lot of the mythos around Dick - a lot of how he turns out is because he is the eldest child, because Bruce projected on him first. Even creating the name Robin is important because it's about paying homage to his family at the circus. 

You might be wondering why Sean reworked this incredibly important part of Dick’s backstory. There’s got to be some sort of payoff right? Is it a chance to explore exciting new dynamics? Gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be the eldest son? No.

HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW THE SOURCE MATERIAL

HE MADE JASON THE FIRST ROBIN BECAUSE HE FORGOT DICK WAS THE FIRST ROBIN

NOT KNOWING WHO WAS THE FIRST ROBIN IS  A FUNDAMENTAL MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE SOURCE MATERIAL

Do you know who knows the order of the Robins better than Sean Murphy, an actual Batman writer? TWELVE-YEAR OLDS ON WATTPAD. 

His spin on Dick being the second Robin involves him stealing Robin from Jason for his circus act. Which is dumb for thematic reasons, but also for secret identity reasons?? Why would you get a kid whose stage name is Robin and make him be Robin and expect people not to notice??

(Batman: Beyond the White Knight )

He also has Bruce specifically recruit Dick to be Robin because that’s his stage name. Which doesn’t make sense as a recruiting strategy for any job ever? You aren’t going to recruit people for things based on what they like and perform as?? It also takes all the autonomy out of Dick’s decision to be Robin and makes Bruce look really really bad for poaching this random kid.

So obviously he's not a fan of the comics or the bat family. What is he a fan of?

Sexy Joker

Now, I hear what you're thinking. Why would a person who doesn't care about Batman characters enough to have actually read the source material want to write a Batman comic? The answer is of course as in all things, sexy joker.

Also in the third one Bruce and Harley Quinn are married.There’s your love triangle. I'm not reading the third one. I refuse.

Knowing this, the scenes where Joker grows muscles or just shows up to a fight shirtless for literally no reason starts to make sense. 

The relationship between Batman and the Joker is actually the real priority of this book, which either on purpose, or by accident, helps to invalidate a lot of the core themes of Batman.

For example, the way the toxic romantic relationships are put on a pedestal in this comic - Harley Quinn always believing in the Joker and that being right, the tension between Bruce and Joker, all of this can be explained by having this one singular goal; to make the Joker sexy and to ignore all the implications behind it.

Meanwhile on the family side, this focus on Joker seems to suggest romantic and blood relations will always triumph over adopted family or friendship. All Dick does is yell at Bruce for slights we are never shown and run away and come back to lukewarm apologies. 

Dick is also the first to give up on Bruce - before Babs - when he’s running around doing collateral damage early in book one. The climax of both books is the Joker solving problems with Bruce, never his well trained allies he’s been working with since day one.

 Duke barely has a relationship with any of the cast other than the Joker. Jason (the first and most beloved son apparently) gets tortured by the joker for Bruce’s identity because the joker was self conscious that Jason was more important for Bruce then he was. He shouldn't have bothered.

Jason gives away Bruce’s in the same words he cuts ties with Bruce forever. He’s not strong enough to keep Batman's identity to himself - he doesn't have enough love to want to go back to Bruce after suffering under his name.

Faking Jason's death acts as a way to hurt Bruce, yes, but also as a way for the Joker to prove to himself that what he and Batman have is more than what Bruce will have with his family. As Jason leaves Bruce of his own volition, Joker will never leave Batman’s orbit.

Jason’s death in the comics has major impacts throughout the entire bat family's lives. But in this comic - one where Bruce is ready to kill for an evil ancestor but not a son, where Jason readily leaves Bruce and where familial loyalty is not a priority, Jasons’s death, or I guess “fake death” rings so hollow. Bruce’s romantic relationships, are written with much more care and are given much more importance in the text.

The theme of this seems to be that when people love each other romantically, no matter how toxic the relationship is - that's true love. Even if people want to people want to tear each other apart they are destined to come back together again and again. Meanwhile sons will abandon you when it gets hard and the love of family is not enough to bring people back. Evidenced by how quickly Batman forgives the Joker and Harley for Jason’s death but isn’t really seen mourning Jason to the same level - and the way that Jason abandoned Bruce and joker and Harley and Bruce never abandon each other.

It's even in the way that Bruce explicitly tells Harley she wishes he had what she has - biological children.

It feels incredibly sad that Murphy took the Batman franchise: one built on found family, that is about losing a family and gaining another, where the key characters and key because of their platonic relationships with each other, and threw it all away because he though joker/batman/harley quinn was sexy.

The thing is that Murphy seems to have an understanding that family should be important. He has explicit scenes with Babs and Dick where he says that they are the most important thing to him. But as mentioned before the words ring so hollow without any actions to back them up, like Bruce thinks if he says it, it's enough.

In the comic where family never sticks together, problems are never solved with family but instead with weird Harley-Joker romantic tension and scenes like the one above, all the posturing Murphy puts in relation to found family feels incredibly empty. Babs, Duke and Dick and the rest of the nonexistent bat family are definitely out of character which contributes to their characters and relationships feeling hollow.

Circling back to the whole Sexy Joker is the whole reason that White Knight was written, suddenly a whole lot of things start making sense. Everyone is out of character because Sean Murphy could not give a shit about anyone else. Biological family is the most important because the Jatman Love Babies. Harley Quinn has to forgive her abuser because how else would they all fuck? The police brutality…. Yeah… that one is still a mystery to me. 

Conclusion

White Knight is the worst possible Batman taken by a person who knows so little about the batman mythos that they can't remember the order of robins, never read a Duke comic, thinks Babsgirl is canon and probably doesn't even know Cass exists. The first one touches on like batman causes structural damage bc of his batmobiles and the solution is to literally MILITARIZE the police. The second one tries to touch on wealth and the effects on the past and found family, but implies biological family is better and adopted family is flawed and so carelessly brushes past the implications it sets for wealth. It's honestly so jarring to see an author set things up and just. so. blatantly not understand anything they are saying? So much so that their message ends up being a complete 180 what the initial message seems to set up. It feels almost post ironic until you realize the sexy joker agenda.

Separate from the characterization and the themes, this comic is somehow ableist, racist, classist and incredibly insensitive to domestic abuse survivors while also somehow touting the fact that it's so progressive while doing the receiving due to a fundamental ignorance of every issue it touches on. 

I think part of my problem with this comic is that the themes that are set up are interesting! I would read a nuanced take on institutionalization or over militarization in relation to Batman comics. In addition, Sean Murphy is a good storyteller, he knows how to set up a mystery and have good pacing and build up interest. There are some good, interesting moments in white knight, but they are overshadowed by all the problems, which are everywhere and inherent to the series.

 As it exists though, white knight gives a middle finger to the themes it attempts the tackle and the characters it mangles. My esteemed friend @2nagi said it best: “what's with all this failed self-contradictory social commentary. why is there ableism and victim-blaming in there. he wanted clown sex why did he not just write clown sex. i think maybe murphy should have just written full-on joker erotica instead. It would have been more narratively consistent than this mess. and truer to his vision too”.

Jinshi = Ren

Maomao = Dan Heng

Lihaku = Jing Yuan

Gaoshun = Kafka

Xiaolan = March and Stelle

Dan Heng entered the imperial palace to work as an archivist/Record Keeper

Ren and the rest of the Stellaron Hunters work in the internal affairs department/ spy network but are posing as a minor palace department on the records.

Ren hires DH after witnessing his talents and him preventing a disaster that might shake the imperial palace. Dan Heng hates working for Ren.

He finds him annoying while Ren is amused because most people look at him with fear but Dan Heng reaction is new to him. It's not fear but mere annoyance and disgust he finds cute.

March works inside the inner palace as a court lady to one of high ranking consorts

Stelle works outside the palace and is sorta affiliated with the spy network department but not directly.

Her infos is more on the underbelly side; both of them will be very good in hearing the gossip and various wealth of info in the palace.

One time during one of their investigative missions, they were running away from an assassin with a gun and jumped down a waterfall to escape.

When they are trying to find a way out of the cave behind the waterfall Ren carried Dan Heng on his shoulders to give himi leverage since there was a hole above but then an actual frog jumped on his head startling him which made them lose balance.

So the two fell down into a suggestive position and Dan Heng’s hand was in Ren’s crotch that;s how he found out how BIG his weapon is, but Dan Heng pretended that nothing happened and just said "im sorry i may have crushed a frog"

Xingyue part:

Lakan = Yingxing

Fengxian = Dan Feng

Dan Feng is the highest ranking courtesan in Verdigris, he doesn’t sell his body but his art and he is a master of poetry, dance, singing and strategy games. That’s why his bidding wars reach astronomical prices.

Dan Heng is Dan Feng’s son with a court official, Yingxing

Yubie = Madam, Dan Feng’s biological parent and Dan Heng’s grandparent

Yingxing and Dan Feng met in Verdigris when one of his co-workers invited him to get a drink at one of the famous brothel houses in the capital.

Dan Feng is the most sought after cuz let's be serious everyone digs that stare he gives also Yingxing thinks he has beautiful eyes. Dan Feng is untouchable,unlike other courtesans. He is more of an intellectual person and Yingxing fell for that beautiful mind of his.

Yingxing is a low rank government official in the manufacturing/crafts department; at the beginning his salary couldn't afford frequent visits but over time he proves himself capable with his weapon crafts.

Yingxing worked his way up and saved a lot so he could get to spend precious hours with Dan Feng, he isn’t very impressed at first because a lower ranking official that couldn’t ever be a regular to suck money out of, but the passion that Yingxing has for craftsmanship and the desire to use his skills for some greater purpose—far beyond what he sees in most jaded clients—made Dan Feng fall for him.

Sometimes Dan Feng is by the window waiting for when will Yingxing come back but tries not to show how happy he becomes when Yingxing does.

Yingxing may be a formidable opponent in games but he can’t ever really beat Dan Feng in them since Dan Feng wins most of the time he doesn't mind at all! enjoys it even and most of the time he makes it up with his charisma and charm.

Yx: says something witty or flirty to df while making his next move

But on the inside: *is melting*

As the two grow closer, they will be distraught on how quickly their time together passes by each time. Around the time Dan Feng price went astronomical and rumors were being bought out so they did the baby trapping that horribly backfired.

Yingxing was sent to war and was gone for a long time for a few years. He got what he needed a high enough salary to buy out df but it was too late seeing the state the house is in and how yubie is chasing him away make it seem like Dan Feng died.

Yingxing was in despair and blamed himself for everything he wished he could turn back time. when he found out but got hope when he saw his son Dan Heng with his adoptive mother Baiheng who took care of Dan Heng in the years both parents were not available.

Time skip to present with him redeeming a courtesan cuz he lost a bet with his son. He got a lotus flower as clue from Dan Heng that Dan Feng is still alive but like lost his mind and sick.

When Yingxing found out that Dan Feng was hidden in one of the sick rooms of the brothel, he immediately ran toward it.

He opens the door and sees Dan Feng still as beautiful as the day he met him.

He chooses to redeem Dan Feng no matter the price. They got married but sadly Dan Feng died a few months after.

hello! I noticed you’re an Ameliko enjoyer :D talk to me about them!

Never thought that someday someone's gonna ask me to yap about Ameliko but im still glad you did. Anyway get ready cuz I have some things to say:

First of all I have 3 main reasons to ship them

1.They remind me of Zutara (and i like zutara).

2. Their whole dynamic and story feels very Yin and Yang coded. A kind-hearted Liko learns to be tricky and sly in her strategies while Amethio who you would think works in a evil organization and would be cruel to his enemies actually fights with honor and tries not to hurt that much. Also the thought that the two descendants of two estranged men overcome almost 100 years of conflict with love? I dunno there's just something ✨poetic✨ about it that speaks to my soul and besides it just makes sense from the plot standpoint (also this ISN'T to say that Likodot or Likoroy or any other ship with Liko don't make sense for the plot and shippers of these ships are wrong for shipping it. Im just saying that Ameliko makes sense at least for me.)

3. Another reason is moreso somebody's elses influence, namely an artist named おかあ who publishes their art on Twitter (I refuse to call it X), and pixiv. I find their Ameliko drawings to be pretty cute, despite them being in japanese lol.

and now it's ✨headcanon time✨

One day Liko learned from Conia that Amethio can play piano so she went to him and asked if Ame can teach her play it. He was kinda confused but accepted Liko's request and started teaching her. I have no idea how since there's no piano on Brave Asagi but perhaps they're flying over to Amethio's mansion on Corviknight and play there?? Anyways Liko managed to pick up on piano pretty fast and soon her and Ame were able to play together on four hands. (They both love it btw especially when they play The Nutcracker music).

liko likes to show amethio gurumin/nidothing vids from time to time and even tho he doesn't really gets as hyped at them as Liko does, he does get happy when he sees her smiling.

In the future, when Spinel is no longer the director of exceed & leader of explorers, adult Amethio takes that role over HOWEVER he chooses Liko to help create better future for pokemon and people as his second-in-command and (probably) first in the history of exceed vice-director.

I. Have both so much to talk about yet nothing I feel like??? It's weirddd . On one hand all i have is Geiers in my head , on the other, Sybil and Blaus content is better storywise i think. Bleh

Welp i will start by talking more about Copper i think cause i feel like i haven't done her justice and she has a lot of potential. Her relationship with the Kolibris can grow into something great but also scary sort of.

Copper despite being a Geier is suprisingly unstable as i mentioned due to her weird inner fights. She wants to know more about the world sometimes ,or her condition or anything really. Yet she beats herself with a stick over thinking those thoughts heavily. It's a vicious cycle. And Kolibris entering that equation is both helpful and stresfull fhfhfj.

I haven't explored this part of Geiers much yet cause im unsure how to handle it but Geiers being anti-bioresonant gives them the unique ability to actually. Govern the bioresonant units kinda. Not govern but. Check up on. AEON is still in it's early stages with this job position for this unit but essentialy they have given Geiers the option to call a decommisioning order on a Falke/Kolibri unit if they deem them too degrated. It's a very edge case scenario since usualy they aren't the ones deciding who is defected or not in Nations eyes , they just carry out the orders. But AEON is toying with the idea of employing this strategy permanently as another check for bioresonant deviancy or spies etc. It's a hit or miss so far.

Anddd this is why Copper pursuing anything with the Kolibri cadre is a very polarizing topic for her. On one hand she does like them . And they are clearly at least intruiged back , interacting with her , offering books and their thoughts. It's both fascinatingly fresh to talk to someone they can't be in the head of , and also concerning . Because Copper fully realizes the Kolibris reciprocating can lead to their degradation, which she would have to report. Its. A very delicate and messy situation but they do get closer with trial and error. Sometimes Copper gets burned and pulls back, sometimes something upsets the Kolibris. But they do small gestures for eachother , like sharing books together or insights on different topics. Copper has always had a bit more refined speech for a Geier , purely as a personal choice of not being blunt as the bare minimum in conversation most geiers do. And this impresses the Kolibris a bit. They in return slowly let her inside their small circle and even start to read in their dorms together.

The check ups also turn a lot more . Interesting / tender sometimes depending on the Kolibri performing it. Cause I see the Kolibris as something of a unified mind , but with slight personal opinions sometimes . They do have their own opinions on some things but come together to a consus always. And with Copper some of the cadre is bit hesitant to engage more , it's a risk afterall. But the other half is very much into her dhfhgjb big coocky fire women that likes the smell of burnt flesh ,what can go wrong. The process of digging through Coppers mind is like disecting a special new book for the Kolibri.

Copper is bit of a loose lost bird , and the Kolibris constant hum and buzz of talking and moving in herd keeps her stable weirdly enough. Yes she gets gay panic but hey better than a mental breakdown.

I’m pretty good and open to most ships on some level. I’m a ‘will try most things once’ sort of reader. However what I’ve learned about myself is that what interests me more is character dynamics and characters struggling with themselves rather than a lot of the popular romantic and/or sexual tension/buildup/catharsis tropes (slow burns, enemies to lovers, etc) I get why people read them, I’ve read them myself and enjoyed them, but I’ve come to accept that it’s just not what I personally want to write about

A few years ago I co-wrote a fic with a friend (the man from uncle fic), and my friend IS good at the slow burn, yearning, pining thing - in fact, hearing her talk about how much she enjoyed it and why was a big factor in my figuring out what I didn’t like about it and why I was struggling to write it. This is good! I think more people should consider branching out beyond the usual fandom offerings, but also that they should think about what’s not satisfying them and how find it- or how to make it themself, which is what I’ve been doing. Exploring the stuff I like to try to find what makes me happiest to write about

Which seems to be mostly jokes and psychological trauma with a side helping of people spending quality time with each other and supporting each other. And it turns out that a lot of the things I enjoy writing and reading (comedy, action scenes, ensemble dialogue) are the things that other people aren’t as comfortable writing, so I get to fill a niche as well!

Now. To go back to your question

I’ve always said I’d be interested in exploring what’s up with TedTrent. I think there’s a lot of intriguing potential in their interpersonal interactions and their overall dynamic as two middle aged divorced men. I’ve also commented before on the interesting parallel with Ted and Michelle and the way that Trent and Dr. Jacob both had very professional responsibilities to each of them, but whereas Trent gave up his career for the sake of doing right by someone he respected, Dr Jacob proceeded to date his client

I’ve also started a borderline crack fic that’s just Ted, going through a mild sexuality crisis, who keeps coming up with more and more euphemistic ways of saying he’s got the hots for Trent because he can’t quite bring himself to say it like a normal person ("He makes me want to ask my grandma for her blueberry casserole recipe" <- guy who has it bad)

Im also of course a big fan of Jamie, so I’ve read and dabbled in writing RKJ, RoyJamie, SamJamie, and DaniJamie, and Sam/Dani/Jamie. My take on Sam/Dani is that it’s a pairing that seems like it should work but i haven’t figured out what that looks like yet. Dani has a very hyper restlessness to him, and Sam a very calm one, so I think they would need to take breaks from each other

I’ve had half a mind for JanJamie as well, but I then I made up my own elaborate headcanon for my future fic so now I prefer them more as future coaching work husbands where Jan is very practical and steady and Jamie is the one with the creativity who inspires people and together they fight about football strategy until it’s time to go to their respective homes and then they do it all over again the next day. Which is the sort of wildly specific headcanon you can’t possibly expect someone else to have

I also made a post a million years ago about Jamie, Keeley, and Rebecca going to pride together and being confused for being an impeccably gorgeous queer threesome, and frankly I’m still here for that, although I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Rebecca/Keeley/Jamie fic in the wild. Honestly though, going back to what I said before: what I really want is the dynamic. I just want them to hang out together. Maybe I should send them on a spa day together — I already gave them a smoke break together, maybe after that they agreed on a spa day

Also BarbaraBeard sounds fun, for two characters who I don’t think ever met on screen. I feel like they would enjoy watching hockey together — and maybe Beard would forget about Jane if he found a woman who seems willing and able to deadlift him over her head

alright gonna think out loud here:

if youve seen any of my last like 3 posts you’ll know something thats always stood out to me is Van’s look of absolute fucking bloodlust whenever someone is about to die.

Shauna attacking Lottie- its a pretty brief shot but we see Van looking down at it and she looks not at all upset about the situation which is STRANGE to me because shes a Lottie supporter??

Natalie about to die after drawing the Queen Card - This one is the most insane one imo, she’s looking VERY hyped about this, literally goes “yes!!” in the background and is grinning the whole time.

Shauna and the Snapband - Ive made posts about this scene already but in the context of the previous two incidents?? definitely weird.

For all my character (v)analysis, this of all things has stumped me the MOST. the main things i can think of here are a) Van sees it as a means to survive and if they die then hey, shes alive. Tai’s alive. b) Fucked up childhood i choose you- she could have been exposed to violence as a child?? c) Its a coping strategy to deal with the violence? Adrenaline rush?? d) Other Tai?? Jasmin said ONCE that we’ve seen more of other tai than we thought and now im convinced every second person is also possessed.

So here is my exploration of each of these options:

A) Van sees it as a means to survive. as we know, Van is very survival focused. that feels like a bit of a “well duh-“ statement but of a lot of the yellowjackets, Van is one of the most “whatever it takes” of them. for her i think its less her survival and more Tai’s, but obviously primal urges like hunger come into play. but this isnt about her being dedicated to Tai (mostly). She could be reacting like this as a combination of “We live another day” + “This is how it has to be”

B) She had a bad childhood and was exposed to violence too much. honestly this is hardly a theory, and more of a guess that coincides with point C.

C) It’s a coping strategy. I mean Liv has outright said Van has chosen to shut off her emotions in this situation. As one would- and while i do think Van was already pretty emotionally detached pre-crash, the situation would ABSOLUTELY double down on it. Which makes sense. If you teach yourself to see the violence as fun + enjoyable, the situation likely gets a lot easier. That and violence in general can give you adrenaline rushes. People can sometimes enjoy and seek out physical fights for this exact reason. Adrenaline feels good- and you can see why one would get that rush here.

D) Its Other Tai but in Van. this is half a crack theory half sincere. my only evidence for anyone else being Other Tai possessed is because of Jasmin saying that we’ve seen more Other Tai than we thought….

But in full sincerity, I’d likely put it down to A and C together. She’s likely dissociated, out of it, and the situation has taught her that violence is good. Violence means food on the table. Violence means survival. and she can justify all the thrill (adrenaline) she feels from it via “The Wilderness Chose” and its not bad because hey, it is how it is. So this positive correlation between violence and survival + the fact that its addicting, its a thrill to see, is likely the reason she reacts this way.

Can I pick your brain for a moment? How did you bring up not working anymore with Jack? I'm in a bit of a differe t situation than you, i don't have physical health issues, only mental, and I'm not married or even moved in with my boyfriend. But working is so draining to me, it always has been and I can't even work full time. I'm just going through a rough patch right now and I can't stop dreaming of a future where I can just be a home maker, but im worried if I ever bring it up to my boyfriend he wouldn't approve or understand.

Even now working part time, I feel like a drain on my mother, and i know i get judged for not working full time and living with her as someone in my mid 20s. Have you ever dealt with those feelings?

Sorry it took so long to reply, in my situation this was actually a goal that Jack had from the start. She wanted to be the one working and earning enough that I wouldn’t have to.

When it came to actually making that change it was a combination of my physical and mental health collapsing. After thinking about it for a while I considered trying other jobs, part time, or finding at home things I could do since the idea of being fully dependent on someone else was really uncomfortable for me at the time. I ended up sitting down with Jack, explained how I was feeling, my concerns, and we sat down at the computer to go over the budget together and see what would be feasible for us. Turns out she was making enough on her own to cover all our expenses so we went forwards with me converting to not working anymore.

Depending on your situation and the people around you it may be best to share your feelings with them. Explaining to Jack directly that I didn’t want to be burden or make our lives harder allowed me to see that she didn’t feel that way at all, her priority is my happiness, she made sure I knew that. Having that open conversation made it a lot easier to feel comfortable and safe making that change, as well as acknowledging whether or not it was an option for us

(And they’re not “only” mental health issues, they’re just as valid please don’t feel the need to downplay them)

Depending on you and your capacity you might also explore other strategies to earn income if that’s something you still need to happen (selling your own creations, content creation, there’s some apps that pay you for surveys, I do one that pays you for reaching milestones in mobile games for some spending money and there’s audio transcription that pays you from home) there might be things you feel more capable of handling if you aren’t financially able to quit altogether.

Ultimately I find it comes down to being open with people you trust, explaining your struggles, goals, and compromises while being understanding of both sides

I've been talking with a friend who's therian recently, and I'm starting to understand some (potentially?) otherkin feelings I haven't previously examined in my life. The kind of "wait, that's not common?" thoughts that feel really familiar to when I first realized I wasn't a boy and wanted to wear more fem clothes.

I want to explore these robot (and plushie?) feelings further the same way I did with my gender, but I'm having a tricky time figuring out where to start. I was wondering if Val, the robot/AI in your system (I hope I got her name right, sorry if I didn't), might have any tips for things to try? Analogues to the "put on a skirt and give it a spin" strategy?

Hiii! Hope you're doing well too, I've been getting over my sickness, just resting all day and stuff, so its going ok so far.

Most of what worked for me was pointing to various species and eventually types of robot and AI, saying "this is me," and analyzing what exactly I liked and didnt like about temporarily "being" that. I may just be very weird with how my chipset works, but I don't know what kind of process other people go through for this.

Another thing that I think helped me was to play videogames where you play as a robot. Starbound was my go-to and you can kinda tell in my favorite robot model [I actually have a ton of different ones, val is just the one i use most of the time and my real name is our legal name so im not gonna share it across the internet]. But just having a robot skin in minecraft or telling friends "I'm a robot now :3" as a """joke""" or changing your display name and profile to be robotic for a bit helped me out too.

Definitely try stuff and see how you feel, but make sure to think about every piece of it. sometimes there will be one element that you really like but its hidden by your dislike of the entire rest of it or vice versa. And ask some other people if you havent already, a lot of my friends in the tumblsphere here are also machines and you can ask them for advice too.

Also! Don't try to change your identity even slightly for someone else's approval [even mine!]. All too frequently people will look down on certain designs for not being "visually mechanical enough" or whatever, please try to ignore them and be yourself

BESTIESSSSS, johnny & monique just clicked when they met as trainees, and instantly hit it off!! they bonded over the fact they were away from home, and they both taught each other things about their country! moni even successfully taught johnny how to speak in french somewhat! she accidentally switches from english to french when she’s have conversations w/ johnny, and johnny just stands there like 🧍‍♂️ i have no idea what your saying.

johnny loves to take moni on little adventures and they are always going sight seeing or going to other cities to explore whenever they have downtime! she is often a guest on JCC … even if she isn’t tagging along for the activity she finds a way to be in it, even if she’s unwilling. they always have a blast together! it’s so easy for moni & johnny to talk to each other and moni loves that she gets to relax around johnny and know she’s going to have a good time!

the two of them are always stirring the pot whenever they are eachother, they love to make stuff up and convince everyone it’s true and just mess with everyone…it’s typically doyoung or taeyong that realize their antics and in moni’s words “ruin the fun” they are also always just doing crazy things and the members are lowkey scared of them, esp moni. yuta brings out the chaotic side of her members never thought could ever exist 😭😭

doyoung just wants to worry and care for moni like a gentlemen, but moni makes it SO HARD. she’s always harassing him and making fun of him, and doyoung is just like 💀 girl be so for real rn. he would be in the middle of doing something for her like opening a chip bag and moni just starts screaming “YAH, DOYOUNG, DO YOU THINK IM INCAPABLE JUST BECAUSE IM A WOMEN? YOU DONT THINK I HAVE MUSCLES? HOW RUDE.” and doyoung is like WTF. he just looks at her with his crazy eyes and gives up 😭😭

but dw, doyoung will harass her right back and moni will giggle and say sorry. he always worries about her and makes sure she’s eating and drinking and will always try and prevent her from making self-sabotaging decisions…but does she listen? 9 times out of 10 she doesn’t but yk, he tried!!

JAEHYUN

moni is sooo affectionate around jaehyun, he just looks so cozy and comfy! whenever she sees him she loves to tackle him in a hug and lay her entire body weight on him. jae is dying while moni is in her own world, happy as could be. jae & moni are inseparable once together though, once they hang out and spend time together; there’s no going back. they will spend time together until moni passes out and takes a cat nap…and jaehyun just goes back to playing games.

moni & jaehyun are such a great team when playing games, because moni is really good at creating strategy and working out puzzles, while jaehyun has the muscle to actually execute the mission. moni always takes his strength to her advantage, for example having him carry her bags or even her when she’s super tired…not that jae minds though. he likes that moni allows him to protect her!!! if someone were to mess w/ moni…you better hide from jaehyun, he is moni’s #1 defender.

JUNGWOO

jungwoo LOVES to listen to moni. whenever moni needs someone to talk to to either vent or just talk about built up ideas in her head, she goes to jungwoo. he loves listening to his older sister talk…even if he’s worried for her mental health. he will always be moni’s shoulder to rest on! he will listen and let her talk, and then the two of them will work it out together…or just do something to cheer themselves up!

moni adores jungwoo with all her heart, she will spoil him always. if he briefly mentions wanting something one day, she’ll buy it and hide it until his bday/christmas. she would do anything for woo, and it’s so precious! all the members complain that jungwoo is her favorite because she always is doing stuff for him, and she will swear up and down she doesn’t have a favorite….but jungwoo knows he’s the favorite <3

MARK

mark is moni’s child - she’s always worried…she’s worried about his health but also worried about just how he acts. mark will say some weird stuff and moni is just standing there like 😀 should i be concerned? but besides her worries, mark makes her laugh SO MUCH. she will try and hold in her giggles..but mark makes it impossible 😭

make probably visits moni’s apartment the most out of 127, he likes to come visit after a long day when he needs to just power down and be in silence for awhile. moni always lets him crash in her bed and let him relax….she will usually just sleep on her couch or spend time in her studio. she will always make him breakfast before he leaves too! moni will always understand and let him come over when he needs to be alone…but he also comes and visits and watches movies with her! he tolerates her movies as long as she makes him food 🥺

haechan will harass moni just like he will the other members, but moni just smiles and pats his head in response. moni will always have a soft spot for her younger members, and they can’t help but crumble under her love <3. moni will always be there to gently pat his head and tell him it’s okay…which causes him to be even more chaotic 💀, haechan just sticks his tongue out at moni and carries on

but haechan loves loves loves moni, he will always hug her and cling on to her, and moni just smiles and wraps him up in her arms. she took care of him and the dreamies a lot during training days because they were so young…so moni is lowkey haechan’s 2nd mom. haechan always knows he can rely on moni to save him whenever he is loosing or getting picked on too!!! moni will defend haechan until the day she dies <3

Good morning, Tumblr nation, and by good morning, Tumblr nation, I mean hello, Papa Pat. It’s 11:25 PM on the night this assignment is due, so let’s just get this over with.

i swear the image is relevant hes literally living in the moment like the chapter name CHAPTER 7 (imagine a cool thunder effect here and maybe some lightning)

Alright, this chapter’s called Living in the Present, which, like, I’m already pretty good at considering I can’t time travel, but I digress (no clue what that word means, but I think it fits). This chapter talks about the importance of mindfulness and how savoring the present moment is an incredible way to increase your happiness. Lyubomirsky explains that tons of people spend too much time dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, which, in turn, diminishes their well-being.

Me, personally? I don’t have an issue with this because my memory is terrible. My only option is to live in the present, so maybe she should put that into her strategies section—just simply forget everything, Lyubomirsky. It’s that simple.

Anyways, like I said, her strategies section. This part basically talks about practicing mindfulness, appreciating small joys, and avoiding distractions. Yeah, the same thing we’ve heard a billion other times.

NOW onto the part of the chapter you’ve been waiting for: FLOW!

I chose to discuss the other stuff first because this part was long, and we already discussed a lot of it in class (see, I do pay attention sometimes). Okay, so essentially, flow is a state of super deep immersion—basically when you’re LOCKED IN, and your skill meets your challenge level PERFECTLY. Doing any activity that brings satisfaction and fulfillment will put you into this flow state.

CHAPTER 8 (imagine what I said to imagine in the prior chapter, but somehow cooler—idk, add a dragon too, maybe)

Good ol’ Lyubomirsky talks about COMMITTING TO YOUR GOALS in this chapter—another big activity chapter, whoohoo, yay, fanfare, fanfare, etc. So, in this chapter, she talks about how pursuing meaningful goals can significantly improve someone’s happiness, specifically emphasizing that goals should be self-concordant—which means aligned with personal values and interests—rather than goals driven by external pressures.

She then goes on to explain that setting and achieving goals can grow your motivation, sense of purpose, and overall life satisfaction, which, like, I agree with, but also—I get so excited and plan a big thing just to be like… eh, too much work, maybe later. But oh boy, when I do hyperfixate on something? Come hell or high water, I achieve that goal because I’m stubborn and unreasonable when I REALLY want something.

Wrapping up this chapter, Lyubomirsky also discusses the importance of persistence in your goals, celebrating progress, and maintaining those long-term commitments to happiness.

CHAPTER 9 (totally didn’t notice we had to do a third chapter and am reading this now)

I’ve spent the better part of the last hour reading Chapter 9, and let me say—there’s some fascinating info in here. Really swell.

SO, basically, Lyubomirsky mentions that there’s a super strong connection between physical health and mental well-being—specifically, happiness. She talks about how, by taking care of your body—through exercise, sleep, and eating healthy foods��someone can significantly boost their well-being.

This is actually what I’m writing about for my third-year writing class, so, TBH, I’m pretty glad I’m going back to this chapter and reading it, because now my brain is so big and full of knowledge.

CONTINUING ON, she also says that beyond physical health, this chapter explores “nurturing your soul” through activities like meditation and spiritual practices—such as praying and engaging in acts of kindness. I looked at this in my own way and kinda took it as doing things that you enjoy, such as hanging out with friends and playing games. That’s MY meditation, so it’s close enough to praying and helping the needy… kinda?

But through this, Lyubomirsky says that when people care for both their physical AND emotional well-being, they can create a strong foundation for lasting happiness. Her words, not mine.

So basically, what she’s saying here is that if you take care of your big ol’ complex brain, you can stay happy more. Because, as we all know, brains like to make us sad and angry when we’re not stimulated—so make sure to keep doing fun activities ‘n’ stuff to keep it working.

ANYWAYS, I hope you like my Chapter 9 reflection and insights. I think they were pretty good—I tried my oh-so-best.

Wow, here we are. The end of this wonderful blog post at 11:55 PM. Bet you didn’t think I’d get it in on time (COUGH COUGH half of the class that didn’t submit it on time), but hey, I somehow did it, and that’s impressive. Well, more like irresponsible and also insane that I’m typing this into an official assignment that I’m submitting to a professor, but hey—these blogs are supposed to be about our inner thoughts, I think.

So, here they are.

No use of y/n, In the story it is never said how old they are, be happy and choose the age you want. Before and after the apocalypse. Domestic violence, beatings, hospitals, fights, weapons (?, tlou things. (If there are more warnings I will say them in the corresponding chapter)

His strategy? move.

You moved all the time. As many times as necessary.

It was easy to keep the curious away from what was happening between you two. Keep them away from hitting and screaming.

This time you had gone even further. For some reason Lucas had decided on a house this time, a small house not far from the city but in a fairly small town.

The place was beautiful and quiet, the town needed work so you could try to convince Lucas to let you help with the expenses (and spend as much time as possible away from him.) It could have been a new beginning...a new opportunity...a change.

But the things had never changed and would not change.

You had already given Lucas opportunity after opportunity but he always came back to the same thing. He always returned to hitting, shouting and the threats.

And the story was always the same.

Or that's what you thought.

"Im going to the town... I saw signs that they needed employees in a cafeteria, I can work half a day at least so you won't have to go out as much and you can stay here at home longer..."

You knew it was the only way to convince him. Telling him that this way he could spend more time at home and not telling him that you needed your time or your space, your personal life, like you had told him that time and that it had ended too...badly.

"Of course, baby...but I don't want you too far from here, or away from home every day." He said as he took the car keys and probably went out to sleep with some other woman.

"Yep..." you said trying to smile.

He approached, left a kiss on your cheek and without saying anything left the house. You waited for the car to disappear to grab your things and go out to explore the town.

The people seemed friendly, everyone seemed to know each other. A great advantage of living in a small town and a great opportunity for this curse that followed you for years to finally come to an end.

When you entered the cafeteria, you stood behind a tall, robust man. He had a light brown jacket, construction boots, and jeans stained with dirt. Her head full of messy, uncontrollable curls that seemed to ignore his comands no matter how much gel he put on them.

He was looking at the list of options, carefully choosing the coffee he would have on a cold afternoon like this. When he saw that you were waiting behind him, he turned around and with a half smile on his face he stepped aside and let you pass.

"You advance if you want... I haven't decided yet." He said kindly.

"Oh...thank you." You responded without taking your eyes off the man.

When you arrived on the island, you asked him if the job was still available and for how many hours it was... but luckily for you, they were looking for someone who would stay all day, and you knew that was going to be impossible with Lucas. So you simply thanked him and started walking towards the exit.

When you were getting to the door, you heard someone calling you, and to your surprise it was the man who had let you pass in line.

"I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't listen to other people's conversations, but... are you looking for a job?" he said a little shy.

You looked at him for a few seconds thinking about what to answer. You knew that if he asked you that it was because he had a job proposal, but you weren't sure if you wanted to risk working with a stranger... and much less with a man, knowing that if Lucas found out... he wouldn't like it. Not the idea at all.

"I...well...i-cant...i dont..."You said nervously, not knowing what excuse to give other than - I'm sorry, I can't work with a man because my husband is going to kill you if he finds out.-

"I'm sorry, I heard that you were asking about the job but that you could only do half a day and I... well, I have a daughter, she's not a baby but this month I'm going to be complicated with my job and I don't want to leave her alone for too long. .. I know I don't know you but..." He stayed silent when he saw that you didn't answer him... but it wasn't because you didn't want the job... you were actually thinking that if Lucas didn't find out where you were working, it might work.

"What do you think if we have a coffee and we talk about... ..."

"Sarah...and i'm Joel." He said as he shook your hand.

You told him your name as you held his hand.

Joel...It could mean one of two things, either it was going to be your exit door...or your entrance to hell.

Another update? incredible true? (Don't get excited, I don't know how long it will last.) I just did poorly on two exams and I'm a little depressed... I wanted to distract myself a little.

real answer: i like it when green and pink are working together with some brown idk. like those before me my favorite color in a scenario is also context dependent :P last book: we are okay nina lacour like, five years ago i think. it was ok???? it wasn't groundbreaking or horrible, just a solid thing that i got through in two days when i was actively looking for narration where someone is grief stricken, halted in place, and sad for 250 pages. last movie: juno, i watched it once when i was like 7 and managed to live a couple decades later without ever revisiting it, surprising my roommate who figured juno was my favorite movie due to my Vibes. [spoilers for juno in the next paragraph, if u so care :v] and i did love it, i love transition of the dialogue style going from having this tactile & and distinct early aughts quirky splendor to getting dragged down into grounded territory as the movie goes on, adding a great level of.... ig immersion... to juno's forced journey with the ideals abt family and love getting fractured while wanting the best home for her kid. the film reaching the penultimate breaking point between lorings and juno watching that conversation go down was so fucking crazy. juno plays in a band and was an active witness to the woman she's been picturing as the acting mother of her child for months, belittling her husband for being attached to music. and then still goes through with the agreement. head in my hands i'm gonna rewatch this thing the next several times im in the mood for a film. there's a lot to chew on w/ how music as a concept informs the characters, i have so much more to say but alskdjf that can be it's own post maybe???? sweet/spicy/savory: Hard Question tbh..... not to be the nuance guy but they all have their place fr. i've been using more spicy ingredients in cooking for the last two years than i ever did before that. its just chugging along as a streak, so i think i'm in a spicy type of lass atm

last thing i searched for online: "long live the queen strategy guide" since i've taken to visual novels as a genre and want to explore the one that has continuously been my white whale for over a decade since i first played the damn thing at a demo table at an anime convention. i didn't grow up w/ strategy games so its something to put total active effort into and i want to see what sort of political implications it makes for myself alkasdjf

current obsession: i have five obsession tabs open >_<, a few are character drama-based visual novels, fma03, and supernatural and that's all i'd like to say to the court :)

looking forward to: i have a medical appt in a week that Might be the first step in getting some treatment for the Main Debilitating Malady of the Year, but it's rly too early to tell. fingers crossed this will be the spring/summer/fall i can find a way to cook a soup and go on a walk in the same day.
