no rest for the wicked (nor the foolish)
part eight: in which you're forcibly removed from your comfort zone by none other than the resident ginger, and you meet a certain someone's alter ego(s)
a harbingers x gn reader series!! (includes dottore, childe, arlecchino and pantalone x reader. the rest of the harbingers will not be romantic interests)
notes: surprise surprise, the burn is still slow!! mentions of blood, gn reader with a dosage of snark that probably exceeds the recommended value
series masterlist
author's notes: *daddy's home plays faintly in the background, slowly but surely increasing in volume as i approach you on a hoverboard with a comically large witch's hat on my head and a ridiculous pair of sunglasses on*

It was, by all accounts, supposed to have been a completely normal lab session. You were planning the reaction route youâd take to test the enzyme youâd synthesised and the various ways to ensure its effectivity other than the rate of the reaction and the yield as you waltzed through the door (the inscriptions were glowing a pretty purple-pink hue reminiscent of sakura blooms that day). The redox apparatus from two days prior was sitting exactly where youâd left it, nothing out of the ordinary there. The abnormality came in the form of a segment currently in the process of detaching the round-bottomed flask where your product had accumulated from the condenser; the first thought to register was the sheer audacity for anyone to even contemplate touching your experiments, while the second, this is my chance to study the constitution of these âsegmentsâ up close, wasnât far behind. Glancing up sharply, your flask still clutched in his un-gloved hand, (a voice in your head shrilly protested his lack of adherence to safety procedures) the segment began moving away, no doubt to disappear to wherever him and the rest usually stayed. With more agility than you thought you possessed, you rounded the workbench and grabbed him by his sleeve.
âYou. What are you doing with my condensate?â You demanded, grabbing the flask from between his fingers and setting it down on a stand. Now that the imminent danger of your work going to waste was neutralised, you took the time to analyse this segment of your supervisorâs while you had him cornered. This version of Dottore was at least five years younger than the one you were familiar with, probably from his late Akademiya years. And he wore no mask, leaving two brilliant scarlet eyes on full display, rimmed with pale blue lashes and dark shadows beneath them. The segment coughed and fidgeted, trying to find a way to escape your clutches.
âHold still,â you ordered, reaching up to touch his face. You were startled by the smoothness of the skin, having expected something cold and metallic. How in Teyvat did he pull this off? You tilted the segmentâs face this way and that, looking for hidden wiring or steel plating or anything else that would belie machinery, yet you found nothing. You gave his cheeks an experimental squeeze, and were further surprised when your fingers dug into what seemed to be soft skin, then dropped your hands, stumped.
âHuh. You look very human.â
âPrime did tell me that was the intention,â the segment agreed, flushed in the face and still trying to discreetly push past you.
Even his voice didnât sound robotic in the slightest, riddled with natural dips of tone and perfect inflection for the context. Your eyes took in every detail, every movement, still failing to spot anything that wouldâve given him away as a machine.
âIncredible. Did he give you a name?â
âNo. Prime wouldnât waste a second thinking about something so inconsequential.â
If you werenât mistaken, the segment sounded almost bitter, staring blankly down at the wall with those striking eyes. You felt a twinge of pity; being a clone for Dottore was probably a thankless task. âWould you like one?â You offered, not unkindly. âIf your system permits that sort of input, of course.â
âI- I have no use for such things.â It was strange to think that your Doctor, impenetrable and unmoving as he was, had been capable of stuttering to the point where he himself recalled and implemented the trait.
âHow about Theta? Iâll need to distinguish between you lot somehow.â
âItâs of no difference to me,â the segment- Theta- mumbled, before shooting you one last look, then disappearing in the split second it took to turn your head in his direction. You wondered where heâd gone, and why he was so wary of you.
Oddly enough, you didnât see the Doctor for the entire morning and well into the afternoon. It was far from ordinary for him not to be in the lab the moment you arrived, (you suspected he slept there, if he even slept at all) muttering under his breath as he worked and occasionally ordering you to hand him the wrench or scalpel or graduated pipette in a tone so entitled it tempted you to bash him in the head with the very equipment you handed him. Still, you couldnât deny his usefulness. Having two pairs of hands was always easier than one, especially when the other pair was as experienced as they came; you could bounce any question off him and receive a convincing answer, even if he could never resist throwing in a mocking remark about âhow shameful it must feel to have such a rudimentary fact slip your mind.â
However, you had much better uses of your time than fretting over the location of your boss, such as extracting a sample of noradrenaline from the brain of a body so fresh you half expected the eyes to open in the midst of your operation. Even after such a time-consuming procedure, the Doctor had yet to make an appearance. You wrote it off, assuming he wouldnât be present that day, and ate all the fruit tarts youâd brought while boring holes into your notebook with your eyes and trying to determine what exactly had gone so wrong amidst your calculations that the percentage error was at an unforgivable fifty seven percent.
âOne hundred cubic centimetres of sulphuric acid sounds unreasonable,â a voice from over your shoulder remarked. You blinked, refocusing on the sheet of paper. A whispered curse slipped past your lips as you registered where youâd went wrong; the decimal point of the volume of acid was indeed one too many zeroes to the right. You twisted to see whoâd given you the hint.
It wouldâve been incredibly easy to mistaken this segment for Dottore himself, but he lacked the jagged scar spanning from above the mask to his chin and cutting right through the corner of his lip. This segmentâs face also wasnât as harrowed, unlike Dottoreâs hollowed cheeks and deathly pale complexion. You probably wouldâve missed the difference yourself, if you werenât so accustomed to the tiny details of the Doctorâs countenance. The segment grinned lazily.
âLike what you see, sweetheart?â
Oh, for the love of-
You shoved him away with a roll of your eyes. Not quite as Dottore-like as his appearance suggested, then.
âYou segments are rather friendly today. To what do I owe the pleasure?â
âSince Prime isnât here to hassle us about disturbing you, we thought we might as well make use of the main lab.â
A frown formed between your brows as you mulled over his response, absent-mindedly scratching out the mistakes in your calculations.
âMain lab? Thereâs others? And why would the Doctor forbid you from utilising it on my account?â
The segment leaned over, resting his elbow on the workbench and his cheek in his hand as he watched you. âWhat do you mean whyâ- a delighted expression crossed his face, and his resounding cackle made you look up apprehensively from your notes. âOh, what a scream. You mean you donât know?â
The notion of ânot knowingâ made the scholar in you bristle. âDonât know what?â You snapped, crossing your arms and turning to subject him to the full force of your glare.
âYouâll find out soon enough, lovey,â he replied with another laugh. You scowled.
Patronising piece of-
âI heard you even gave one of us a name,â he said, interrupting your furious train of thought. âI didnât think you were so besotted.â
You clicked your tongue dismissively, waving him off. âDonât be ridiculous. Itâs counterproductive not to know the names of oneâs assistants.â
It was the segmentâs turn to bluster. âI am no oneâs assistant!â
âMhm. Be a dear, Gamma, and pass me the dichloromethane so I can make some aspirin for the inevitable headache you lot are going to give me.â
Muttering and grumbling and secretly preening over his namesake being a highly dangerous electromagnetic wave, he slid you the bottle and even a measuring cylinder and pipette to boot. You rewarded his extra efforts with a small smile, and Gamma suddenly understood every nonsensical thought that Prime had experienced since you arrived in Snezhnaya.
Throughout the day, more and more of the segments appeared from Archons-know-where and took to hovering around you while you go about your business, or chattering and doing a fine job of distracting you from whatever you were reading, or even rushing to assist you. You didnât complain; it was fascinating seeing these different facets of the Doctor. Most of the older segments are rather similar to him, although Gamma had a rather prominent flirtatious streak, while another youâd named Omega was more snappish and impulsive. The younger ones were unfailingly comical; Theta was so easily flustered and a little more apprehensive about explosive compounds than the rest, and Pi, whose name referenced the pastry that was such a direct contradiction to his character, was rude, arrogant and reckless.
(âSince youâre such a bitter pill to swallow, Iâll call you Pi.â You grinned at your own joke. âNo other aspect of you is remotely close to sweet, after all.â
Pi scowled animatedly, shattering the beaker in his hands from how hard heâd gripped it. âI wonât answer to a name given by a simpleton.â)
âPi, clean the mess you made in the fume cupboard! Some of us have organic lungs that canât handle toxic fumes, you know!â
âI donât see how thatâs my problem,â he snapped back, then slunk off to do as youâd told him when you werenât looking.
The youngest of the segments, who barely reached your waist and had yet to even speak in your presence, had taken to trotting after you wherever in the lab you went, weaving between your legs and staring up at you with wide eyes half-hidden by a mop of messy blue hair. Youâd come immensely close to tripping more than once, but you couldnât bring yourself to scold him at all, instead nudging him out of the way like a cat sitting in the middle of the hallway. The segments were helpful enough, even if youâd been talked back at more times that day than your entire career as a lab technician in the Akademiya supervising young recruits, and by the time you were contemplating the prospect of heading to the dining hall for a bite to eat everything was in order; reagents alphabetically stored in their cabinets, counters wiped and glassware washed, even the enormous, curved windows were polished to a high shine. You spared them an approving look as you walked past, arms laden with bottles of (carefully separated) acidic and basic waste, admiring the aerial view of the snowy forest below, draped over the mountainside like a shaken-out blanket. The young segment was still tailing you, a lollipop youâd fished out from one of your pockets in his mouth; his utter disregard for where he was stepping had put you on your last nerve, but every time you sat him down in a safe corner heâd stare dolefully up at you before reappearing in your peripheral vision a few moments later. It was a wonder you hadnât lost your temper, really.
âEpsilon, I can see your reflection in the window,â you pointed out in an unimpressed tone to the segment whoâd been on the verge of grabbing your shoulders in an attempt to startle you. He huffed and grumbled, shaking the hair out of his eyes and cheekily tipping the neck of one of the bottles you were carrying as though to let the acid milkshake within, so to speak, spill, then pranced away from your scathing glare with a merry tune on his lips. You didnât know how the segments seemed so familiar with you, as though theyâd known you all their lives; Pi somehow knew how much value you placed on your leather gloves, as heâd threatened to use them for chromium extraction when you didnât let him take one of your fungi petri dishes, Gamma had off-handedly mentioned how it was a shame your ear piercings had closed up years ago because you couldnât match with their fluorescent blue test tube earrings, and Theta wordlessly handed you a pile of the expensive cider wood parchment you preferred to use and hurried away before you could say anything. It was baffling, to say the least, but you appreciated the extra help. It meant you could skip off to have a rather overdue lunch without fretting over something or other you might have mistakenly left over a Bunsen burner, even if it was strange leaving the lab without the Doctorâs voice criticising your lack of commitment to your education as the door swung shut behind you.
You werenât even surprised to find Childe outside, leaning against the doorframe and tossing a dagger through the air, letting it flip over itself before catching it once more. When you opened the door, he stumbled into you and the dagger slipped from his hands as he nearly knocked you backward; but in a rare moment of swift reflexes you jumped to the side to snatch it from mid-air before it could stab either of you in the leg, only for Childe to latch onto your cloak as he fell and subsequently landing you on top of him. For a long, drawn-out moment, you just stared at each other; one of your hands pressed to the floor near his head while the other gripped the knife a safe distance above you. You quickly noted two things. One: Childe was bony and being draped over him was overall an uncomfortable experience; the apex of each of his ribs dug sharply into your chest, and two: his eyes were a peculiar, beautiful shade, less like the sea and more like heavy velvet thrown over something that glowed bright and blue, dimmed by the weight of the fabric.
Childe was finding it difficult to process anything other than your closeness. Yes, you were even more breath-taking up close and yes he wouldâve given anything to place his hands on your waist and pull you closer still, but he was even more enamoured by the dips and points of your knuckles where your hand gripped the dagger, the creases in your leather gloves around each finger and the oddly calculating look in your eyes as you appraised him. You could stab him, he realised with a rush, staring up at you. You could drive the blade down and lodge it between his ribs and he probably wouldnât be able to react fast enough because it was you, and his blood would stain your cloak and blouse and a coppery taste would fill your mouth. He wondered if Signora was right, and whether you really would look better in red.
You cleared your throat, breaking the spell, and Childe suddenly noticed all the other tiny little things he probably wouldnât get close enough to see again. The notion that such things would remain secret almost made him panic, and it took considerable effort not to clutch at you as you rose to your feet and dusted yourself off. You extended your hand to him, and he allowed himself a split second of self-indulgence, the liberty of seeing your outstretched hand reaching towards his collapsed body as something more than it was; he let himself believe that you, so bright and resplendent in your every trait you might as well have been the moon, were offering him, a creature writhing in the darkness, salvation or even just a momentâs respite.
You hauled him up from the floor with a grunt of effort (he couldnât possibly be as bony as he felt. All that weight had to come from somewhere), then took off your glasses and held them to one of the wavering white lamps, handing him the dagger.
âHello, Eleven.â You frowned at the new scratches on the lenses and started rubbing them with the hem of your blouse, even if you knew it was a fruitless endeavour. âHow long were you waiting out here?â
âLong enough,â he all but whined in response, slinging an arm around your shoulder and ruffling your hair. Your only protest was a half-hearted grumble as you shoved your glasses back on, and his chest warmed with the thought that you no longer instinctively rebuked his touch. âCâmon, Trixy. I didnât think you were the type to ghost someone after a date.â
âWhat are you talking ab- oh, for heavenâs sake,â you said exasperatedly, shooting him a look as he walked towards the stairs with you in tow. âDonât be so dramatic.â
He beamed so widely you nearly stumbled on the steps, blinded by the intensity of his glee.
âSo youâre not denying it was a date?â
You sighed out an incredibly inappropriate curse, drowned out by Childeâs hearty laughter.
âYou are an incorrigible man.â
âWell you went on a date with this incorrigible man,â he countered cheerfully and not without a healthy dose of smugness. That earned him a withering look, and you detangled yourself from his side as you walked down the corridor.
âEveryone makes mistakes,â you said with a shrug, laughing slightly when he let out an indignant splutter. Childe bristled, trailing after you with an exaggerated pout.
âYou should apologise for hurting my feelings, Trixy.â âIf I were to apologise every time I bruised your fragile ego Iâd never have time to say anything else,â you teased, linking your arm with his and pulling him along. âNow come on, they serve an exquisite pumpkin soup on Wednesdays.â
You wondered at what point youâd become so friendly with the Harbinger, to feel relaxed enough to so casually poke fun at him. Maybe your self-preservation instincts were decaying. Maybe it was worth it.
âI donât want to see that⊠Arlie again,â Childe protested. You looked at him sidelong.
âOh?â You asked, feigning surprise. âWhy not?â
Because she outranks me and I donât like having to share your attention, he thought. âShe beat me in a fight once,â he admitted grudgingly. It wasnât even a lie; that bitter defeat was indeed part of the reason he felt less than ecstatic around her, though the atrocities sheâd carried out to become the fourth Harbinger were impactful too.
âInfighting between members of the same organisation should not be the norm,â you stated, shaking your head. âYou Fatui are ridiculous.â
Childe laughed, tugging you closer by your linked arms to elbow you in the ribs. âYouâre one of us ridiculous Fatui now, remember?â
âI am not!â You protested, affronted, before sighing at the self-satisfied expression on his face and changing the subject. âTsk. So you refuse to speak to her just because you lost to her once? Thatâs immature, even for you.â
âNo, no, defeat is all part of the battle. I donât like that she refused a rematch.â
You hummed thoughtfully, chewing over his response.
âSo you believe youâd win this time?â
âMaybe,â he replied with a shrug, steering you past the dining hallâs entrance. âIt doesnât matter though, does it?â He continued, as though the idea of combat for the sake of combat was the most normal thing he could possibly conjure. âSparring with a strong opponent is the real goal. Say, Trixy. Are you any good in a fight?â
You snorted. âIâm a scholar, Eleven, not a warrior. And even if I was, I wouldnât spar with you.â
His face took on an almost comically wounded expression. âWhat? Why not?â
âBecause I know when Iâm outmatched,â you replied dryly, letting him drag you along. A dejected expression you felt compelled to ease fell over his face. âAlthough I do have passable aim with a bow and arrow,â you reluctantly offered, and the change in his demeanour to unadulterated ecstasy was laughable.
âReally?! Youâve got to show me.â
âWhat? No, absolutely not.â Your reply was swift and decisive, but Childe was nothing if not meddlesome and persistent.
âNo, no, no, youâre not getting out of this,â he jubilantly exclaimed, tightening his hold on your arm as if to prevent you from running off. âWeâre going to one of the training grounds right now, and youâre going to do some target practice.â
âIâll use your bloody head as a target if you donât drop it, Eleven,â you threatened.
âGreat idea, letâs try that too!â
Even as you lamented his utter insanity, Childe steered you to the west wing of the palace where youâd never been before. Upon looking around, you concluded that all forms of combat training happened there; the sound of crashing steel and muffled gunshots, interspersed with the occasional crackling, sloshing or rumbling from what was probably from Vision holders practicing how to utilise their elements in battle. The silver in the walls was twisted into different patterns from what youâd become familiar with, abstract depictions of battles long-past and a whole wall of solemn, important-looking text gleamed almost menacingly, commanding the attention of any who walked past it. From your passable fluency in the Snezhnayan tongue, you deciphered it to be an oath of sorts where the reader swore to carry out a myriad of jovial things such as turning the snowy landscape into a rubyâs facet with the enemies innards or their own, and wreaking havoc within the heavens until it rained scarlet. All in the name of Her Majesty the Tsaritsa.
Wow. Bloodthirsty much?
You eyed the oath distastefully, missing how reverently Childe mouthed it as he led you into an empty archery range. Rows of targets stood on the other side, pockmarked and their paint scratched, with a few of them sporting an unfortunate red-brown stain. You were grateful that there was no one there, at least; if you were a little rustier than you remembered then there was no one to witness your mediocrity other than Childe, who was presently looking through the extensive selection of bows and chattering about the various advantages and disadvantages of different models. You riffled through one of the many quivers of arrows scattered haphazardly about, admiring the high-quality steel of the heads. Some of them even had meticulous patterns along their shafts, no doubt hand-painted, and you appreciatively traced a particularly striking golden dragon with tiny, methodical scales spanning the entirety of the arrow, ending at the head where the dragons jaws were open in a roar.
âWell, Trixy? What bow are you going to use?â
You glanced up from the quiver, twirling the dragon arrow between your fingers, eyes skipping over the countless bows laid across the stands. You noted the ones tossed carelessly across them with a disapproving glance, and eventually picked the one that was the most similar to what you remembered using, long-limbed with a straighter taper and made from wood you recognised as Yumemiru from the distinctive diamond-shaped whorls.
âWhy that one?â Childe asked, mesmerised by the sight of you in his element with a weapon at your fingertips. What were you thinking about when your hands reached for that particular bow? Did you have any specifications, preferences in regards to size or even the type of wood it was made from? Were your eyes drawn by the faded blue leather wrapped around the handle? Would you prove to be better, smarter, quicker than he was? The thought sent his heart racing and his brain spiralling with the prospect of having you as a competitor, an opponent.
âDoes it matter?â You replied with a shrug, testing its weight in your hands. âIâm no expert when it comes to the craftsmanship of weapons. The bow I learned to shoot was probably older than me with a string practically on its last life.â You frowned slightly, looking up at him. âWhy do you ask? Is there some sort of technique or guideline I should follow?â
âNo, no, donât worry about doing something wrong,â he reassured, his back to you as he assembled a quiver of arrows. You lowered the bow to stare at him, flabbergasted that heâd so quickly and accurately read the involuntary hesitation in your answer.
âUsually we have beginners start with a compound bow, but you probably have your own inclination by now,â Childe continued, oblivious to your astonishment. âWhat youâve got there is a longbow,â he added, tossing you an archery glove. âTheyâre generally more difficult to master and harder to use.â
You pulled off your glove after making sure his back was still turned before replacing it with the one he gave you, and then picked up the bow again with new interest.
âI see. And yours?â You asked, nodding towards the one he had picked, white wood gracefully curved and narrowed at the tips.
âThis oneâs a recurve bow. Theyâre better at close range and generally need more strength to draw.â
Childe couldnât help but be entranced by your contemplative expression, all furrowed brows and a distant gaze as you took in the new information. He had to agree that you really were a scholar before all else; the pensive look you so often sported might as well have been made to be worn by your features. In your eyes, even an archery range became an experiment, a mystery to untangle. You sighed and turned to face the targets, nocking the arrow and drawing the bowstring back to touch your chin. Childe watched as you adjusted your aim, mentally evaluating your form, then let the arrow fly. He let out a low whistle of appreciation when it hit the centre with a satisfying thunk.
âClearly your aim is more than just passable,â he remarked with an excited glint in his eye that you didnât quite like.
âAccuracy is all I have,â you replied with a shrug, lowering the bow and gently pressing your fingers into the indent the bowstring left in your chin, perfectly aligned with the barely-visible scar there. Youâd forgotten how tender the skin could get. âI doubt I can still hit a moving target, for one.â
âBut you can get the bullseye every time?â
âNot every time,â you corrected, making your way to the target to pull the bow out of the wood. The painted dragon really was a masterpiece, and you took a moment to admire it before heading back to the archersâ stand. Childe grinned and followed after you, bow temporarily forgotten.
âSo most times then?â He pressed, trailing closely behind you.
âWhere are you going with this, Eleven?â
âI still think we should spar,â he replied brightly, so close he was practically breathing down your neck. âWeâll make it so that if you manage to shoot me even once, I go down, or we couldâ-
You twisted around to poke his chest with the fletching of the arrow, cutting him off. âNo.â
âPlease?â He implored, rounding on you whatever direction you turned to avoid him. âPlease, please, please?â
âNo!â You repeat, louder and with the full force of your irritation. âIâm not dying before I get this damned certificate!â
There was a beat of silence as he stared at you, slightly aghast. âYou think Iâd kill you?â
ââŠI donât think youâd do so on purpose, no,â you conceded, taking out your pocket watch. âBut your strength exceeds mine to the point where fearing for my life in a duel wouldnât be unreasonable.â
âIt is unreasonable to assume Iâd ever hurt you,â Childe groused, continuing to block your path every time you tried to move past him. âStop trying to get away,â he added, bending over to pinch your cheek. You stared at him, utterly at a loss for words, then quickly smacked his hand away with an irate grumble.
âI need to get away, I still have lab work to do.â
Childe flapped his hand as if physically shooing away the idea. âYou work too hard, Trixy. Take a break.â
âAnd what do you think this little exercise was?â
âA chance to impress me with your archery skills, of course,â he replied without missing a beat, wiggling his eyebrows teasingly. You rolled your eyes with a quiet huff of laughter, pushing past him, and he dutifully followed after you.
âYouâre not very difficult to impress, are you?â You teased back.
Only when it comes to you, he thought wistfully.

Here Is Why You Should Read Priestâs Modern Danmeis :
As much as i love priestâs period novels, i absolutely adore her more recent, modern novels even more. You can tell that her writing style has completely changed as she grew and gained more experience, giving an edge to her work. I definitely believe her modern books NEED to be as popular as her wuxia ones cause COME ON?
(iâve written in depth reviews on my page for each title i mention)
First, my absolute all time favorite, one of my top 3, Mo Du :
Iâve read this series a total of two times so far, and Iâm about to read it a third time cause itâs just that good. And hereâs the thing, i almost NEVER reread or rewatch stuff ok.
Fei Du is one of the most complex characters that iâve encountered in my reading experience, with the worst type of mental trauma that i could come across. His relationship with Luo Wenzhou is one of the most enjoyable and perhaps, priestâs best written romance. Theyre both equally flirtatious, equally bold, their back and forth bickering is full of sexual tension and their progression from enemies to lovers is IMPECCABLE.
And the plot? PHENOMENAL. The BEST mystery and thriller detective series that Iâve ever encountered, with each book having itâs own individual mystery, and no two mysteries are similar. From child trafficking to serial killers to drug dens and even terrorismâŠ.you name it. Each arc is well crafted, and by the end, youâll truly be able to sigh in satisfaction. For priest to be able ro make you enjoy both the romance and the plot equallyâŠshes a genius. a 27/10.
Trigger warnings: this book discusses heavy topics such as pedophilia, rape, drug abuse, suicide, self harm, and a lot of similar topics
Next: Can Ci Pin:
Her most underrated work and i cant even begin to understand why. I mean yes it takes place in outer space in a futuristic society where people live for around 200 years across the span of 8 galaxies (not there are no aliens, but there are concepts such as ais and robots) but likeâŠ.youâve all read sha po lang with its steampunk theme and you all KNOW just how good priest is at world building. Dare i say, priest is the best danmei author when it comes to world building.
Yes, this is perhaps her slowest and longest piece of work and i get why so many would get bored after the second book. But hereâs the thing, ccp has one of the most complicated worlds and plot. the plot is actually one of the most confusing and heavy plots that iâve encountered. so in order for the story not to fall apart, it was very necessary for priest to spend the first two novels and half world building as well as slowly laying out a proper foundation for the plot. That way, when she starts speeding up the pace, you are basically a pro who doesnât need to backtrack, reread or double check anything. By the time i was done with the third novel, i felt like i knew everything about space politics, wars between galaxies, Ai and microchips, and everything in between. And thatâs saying something cause im an IDIOT when it comes books and shows politics ok.
In this series, priest has seriously invested into every single side character, even those whoâve been dead since before the series even started. With extensive backstories, each and every single character grows on you as much as the main pair if not more, and you fall in love with the found family priest created as well as all the characters who are only talked about in flashbacks and past tense. Another favorite part about this series.
Now the main characters and the romanceâŠ.chefs kiss. Lu Bixing has one of the BEST character arcs that iâve come across. He starts off as this bright sunshine boy, goes through hell, becomes this depressed cynical man then finds his way back to his old self again all in the span of the novel itself. Being able to go through the pain with him then watch him heal, makes you very attached to this baby. Li Jingheng my all time cold prince biggest crush ok i love him. Their romance was SOO entertaining cause EVERYONE was rooting for them and everyone played matchmaker and wingman with them it was HILARIOUS. The comedy was top notch, the second hand embarrassment was real, but it made the reading experience feel much more organic idk i just enjoyed myself so much and laughed so hard. 20/10
Trigger warnings: human trafficking and experimentation, self harm and suicide
Third : Lie Huo Jiao Chou
Xuan Jiâs wings of flame are the highlight of the series ok. Almost every single scene has him whipping his wings out just to show off and his boyfriend eats it up everytime ok.
I absolutely love the amnesiac plot line where two past lovers meet again and yet are unable to recognize each other. Yet, slowly, as they spend more and more time together and one of them starts regaining his memories, the pining and longing begins. And oh does Xuan Ji YEARNS in the most beautiful way possible. And once they BOTH regain their memories in full, the angst is just the cherry on top. Being unable to resist each other yet still trying to pull away, the tension, trying to hold backâŠdelicious.
The plot is so easy to keep up with and enjoy too. Both the story taking place 3,000 years ago and the one in present time are equally entertaining, where we see scenes of war and tomb raiding and investigations and a little bit of magic too. The visuals are fantastic, and the contrast between the two parallel settings is new and refreshing as a concept. 8/10
Trigger warning: main characters experience severe child abuse and neglect
Fourth : Guardian
Guardian is the most popular out of priestâs modern novels so i dont feel the need to say much.
Guardian discusses heavy topics such as death and whatâs beyond. With an element of mystery where an investigation team search after where dead souls are being stolen to or why some souls are being sucked out of living people, the premises has an element of horror and goth that gives it this edge. Coolest ghost story around.
The main cast is also a hilarious bunch, and you sort of grow attached to the entire office especially a fat black talking cat. 7/10
Trigger warning: death and murder
I hope this is enough to convince you all to check out more and more of pipiâs work. Yes, sha po lang, lord 7, faraway wanderers and fuyao sect are amazingâŠbut if you havenât read priestâs modern work then yall are missing out ok. thatâs it for now xxx

Miss "Many many thoughts on part 4" here, I came back to share them:
- First off, very soon into Part 4: the Kirko Bangz reference made me smile so hard but also made me feel old a lil because I was like "damn how many people aren't going to get this?" đ
- The progress from Part 1 through to Part 4 with how y/n feels about Winter: the way it goes from pity and guilt to bitterness and envy, and you did it in such a 'show don't tell' way, very mwah. This is just a me thing but I also believe it's the first infidelity fic I've read where I don't feel too bad for the person getting cheated on because the people involved in the affair are so compelling in their addiction to one another? Since we get y/n's perspective in such a "biased" way, Winter acts as nothing more than a barrier between her and Haechan and the fact she's portrayed as so gullible, passive and "too nice" as Haechan put it, makes me feel the same annimosity towards her as y/n, almost. Somehow I'm more scared of Jeno finding out about their ordeal because y/n's perspective "humanises" Jeno more because he's not an "enemy" like Winter is and it's just, yeah, very good Miss Jewel đ
- The contrast between the smut scenes with Jeno and Haechan is so good? The way you wrote Jeno's really felt like a petty/just-sex hookup compared to the desperation and devotion in the Haechan scene(s).
- Speaking of the Haechan smut... the scene at the end...... woah. Probably some of the best smut I've read? It felt so heated and just... hot, desperate, emotionally-driven (both good and bad emotions), everything. Also, very original? I don't think I've ever read a y/n be so caught up in it that she just forgets how to kiss back, that was very new and very hot and very REALLL.
Not really Part 4 thoughts but overall other series thoughts/praises:
- Sommelier is such a unique and cool job choice?
- I love how you integrate the song lyrics into the fic, it immediately makes me want to listen to the song. I played break up with your girlfriend all morning because of Part 4 actually đ€
- Love how goofy and silly Seulgi's character is
- The way you write dialogue is really good and the way you describe the surroundings and the way people emote around what they're saying always makes it feel very realistic.
In general, you have a really great talent for writing: keep going đ excited for the rest of this series and whatever you'll have cooking next. I fear this series may have dethroned Pussy Fiend as my favourite domjaehyun piece.
See you next week!
OH. oh wow . i just want you to know i am so happy right now i am literally sitting here like this
but like . actually cute đ OKAY LETS GET INTO IT HEHEHE
the way i made that reference entirely for me i was like no one is gonna laugh but me and i do not care BUT IM HAPPY YOU GOT THE REFERENCE OMG đ„č
THANK YOU i really tried to capture the shift in her stance on the whole thing bc she canât exactly keep doing it and feel guilty like . clearly she enjoys being with him and she doesnât feel bad enough to stop yknow? itâs so fascinating that you commented on the humanization of winter and jeno respectively BECAUSE I WAS HAVING SUCH A HARD TIME TRYING TO MAKE WINTER A LESS FLAT CHARACTER WHILE ALSO MAKING HER NOT VERY LIKABLE!!!! my inner struggle was âokay she has to be Real but not Too Real bc then the audience will pity her too much and hate MC. but if i make her Real and Annoying it wouldnât make sense why sheâs in the friend group to begin with if sheâs blatantly irritatingâ so i def went the route of like . sheâs here but not muchâŠ.we like her a bit, but not that muchâŠâŠ.
jeno âŠ. i had to humanize him bc he serves as somewhat of a foil? to haechanâs character which youâll see more of in the next part i think like he has to be real / human so the audience can see why she and haechan work so wellâŠ. yeah :p sorry to jeno </3
IM SO GLAD YOU FEEL THAT WAY i wanted there to be a stark contrast in the way they interacted w each other like . even down to the way they eat pussy they are Different and both can get the job done but itâs like . you still have a favorite though
REEEEAALLLYYYYY??? đ„čđ„čđ„č some of the best smut youâve ever read oh my god đ„čđ„čđ„čđ„č i think thatâs so hot like . emotionally charged sex AND being so into it that you lose yourself and forget how to function properly đââïžđââïžđââïž mhm mhm good stuff
THANK YOU credit to that idea actually goes to my very dear friend :3 she came up w that i just ran with it fr !!!
EEE THANK YOU i love having like . at least one silly/goofy girl character i think a lot of the time ppl feel compelled to make their female side characters or female characters in general very . bland. like itâs not giving âš very demure very mindful âš itâs giving âyou are not fun at parties so what are you doing hereâ i use the female friends as an outlet for all my yapping i just make them talk abt any and everything so . hehe
THANK YOUUUU I LOVE DIALOGUE ITS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE PART TO WRITE i love capturing every little detail i can think of in dialogue whether it be in the dialogue tags or the actual dialogue itself !!!
DETHRONED PUSSY FIEND OMG đ„čđ„čđ„čđ„čđ„čđ„čđ„čđ„čđ„čđ„čđ„čđ„čđ„čđ„čđ„čđ„č i adore this comment i really do strive to outdo myself like not all of my fics are a Labor Of Love some of them are just me scraping out the brain rot i have from thinking abt an idea and i make it look nice but when i devote like . months and hundreds of thousands of words to a fic âŠâŠâŠ i am definitely aiming to outdo myself :â) so this means a whole lot to me thank you genuinely đ„čđ„čđ„č I WILL KEEP WRITING I HAVE NO INTENTIONS OF STOPPING đđđ you are so lovely im so happy you came back to say more i really thoroughly appreciate this message !!!!

AH I JUST GOT TO THE PART WHERE HE ASKED HER TO MARRY HIM !!! you really delivered with the happy ending đ«Ą while i was reading these recent chapters i was thinking about how far they have come đ i literally remember finding this story when the first chapter had just come out and it makes me so happy with all the character growth and how the relationships between rinko and everyone (not just gojo but a lot gojo) have progressed. i have a little bit left of Another Level and Im so excited to start your other works.
your mind >>>>>
also, congrats on the new job!! and i do hope that the days do get easier. life is definitely rough at times but atleast from the way you write your characters and their values, i believe you are a good person and that things work out for good people. i hope this little corner of the internet that you have created can continue to be a positive for you through the days that are harder. sincerely rooting for u <3
-(àž'Ì-'Ì)àž
AHHHHHH. IM SO GLAD YOU LIKED IT đ„čđđ Iâll share a fun fact about All That I Am Is Yours: I originally had it as All That I Am (Is Yours) but I didnât want to give the impression that it was from Gojoâs perspective after how Iâd titled (Please) Prove Me Wrong.
BUT HERE WE ARE. I CANT BELIEVE ITS BEEN SIX MONTHS SINCE I FINISHED ANOTHER LEVEL. ITS BEEN ALMOST A YEAR SINCE I STARTED WRITING IT.
I RANTED SO ITS BELOW THE CUT đ
The character development and the relationship development over the course of the series was so fun. It was just so beautiful and wonderful. Rinko and Gojo were beautiful, but I honestly enjoyed the development of Rinko and Megumiâs relationship because him going from immediately snapping âSHES NOT MY MOMâ to âyou raised meâ was so endearing and sweet.
Thank you so much for your kind words đ„č I do try very hard to be a good person. Iâve said a few times that I wrote more of myself into Rinko than I originally meant to when it came to her weaknesses, but many of her strengths are ones I wish I had. I wish I was as strong as she is.
Something my best friend and I were talking about recently was that Iâm not sure if Iâd have been able to find the strength to get through this if I hadnât started writing Another Level. I needed Rinko. She stood up for herself and spoke her mind in situations where Iâve never been able to. But really, it was how I wrote her relationship with Gojo that opened my eyes. I wrote their relationship the way I wished mine was. The true, mutual respect that they have for each other. The fact that Gojo never belittled her and that he worked to fix his mistakes. That when they fought, they both admitted their faults in the end and worked to make sure they didnât make the same mistakes again. The trust that they have for each other. I realized those were all things I desperately craved in my own relationship that were woefully absent.
That being said, the praise I got for Another Level also came during a time when I hadnât received any for anything in so long. I was berated at work, and I was berated at home. I wasnât allowed to be proud of myself for anything. Every achievement was too small to be proud of in everyone elseâs eyes. So when the comments came in, when complete strangers began complimenting my writing and my storytelling when others never cared, it pulled me out of the pit in more ways than I could ever say.
Thank you again for being part of our lil corner and for rooting for me đđ I hope youâre well!!!

Top 5 favorite bls or top 5 most rewatchable ones (maybe they're the same ones)
they only partially overlap because a lot of my favorite BLs are very plotty, while for me rewatchability often aligns with more lighthearted shows that i can put on at any time, even when im tired. anyway, here we go!!!
TOP 5 FAVORITE BLs
1. history 3: trapped. STILL MY FAVORITE BL SHOW UP TO DATE maybe because it was actually one of the first BLs i've ever watched so it just set the bar for everything else, but i just love it so much!!!!! im aware it's not a perfect show, it definitely has some shortcomings when it comes to the writing, but it's still such a refreshing and interesting plot, the progression between the main characters feels completely natural, and even if it's about a cop and a gang leader the romance is one of the healthiest i've ever seen.
2. a tale of thousand stars. it took me ages to finally decide to watch this show because i was so afraid that it would have some kind of magical realism plot where torfun's soul migrated into tian's body, but in the end it turned out to be just a genuine fairytale-like story about learning to accept oneself and falling in love along the way. it's a spectacular series that delivers emotionally powerful messages about growth, community, and personal redemption, and even if the pace lags a little in a few places, it's definitely one of the best BLs out there.
3. vice versa. AM I DISGUSTINGLY BIASED? ABSOLUTELY. but i also do genuinely believe this is a fantastic and criminally underrated show. the creative premise alone should be enough to draw anyone in, but the strongest points in the series are the incredibly likeable characters and quite possibly the best romantic relationship i've ever seen. the writing is also very solid and full of AMAZING parallels that you can discover only by watching the show over and over again.
4. old fashion cupcake. i always get so ridiculously happy when i find queer stories about adults, and itâs definitely because im now an adult myself so itâs hard to identify with highschool and university students, but it's also because god knows that in our society we need more stories that says thatâs actually never too late to discover yourself and find love and do the things you enjoy. the food metaphors are just the cherry on top.
(the fact that i now have to pick between blueming, manner of death, semantic error and triage is making me want to walk into the ocean.....)
5. triage. [CHANTS] TIME LOOP TIME LOOP TIME LOOP. such an extraordinary and exhilarating journey packed with action and suspense and clever twists. it literally has everything!!!!! time loops!!!! mystery investigation!!!! epic romance!!!! i guess this is probably not your show if you're very into romance, because the relationship between the main characters is only a part of the story, but as i said at the beginning i personally enjoy plotty BLs SO MUCH.
+BONUS. top 5 most rewatchable BLs
vice versa
semantic error
old fashion cupcake
cherry magic
secret crush on you
ask me my top 5 anything
#not to always talk about vice versa but i literally DEMAND people to rewatch it at least once after they finish it#LIKE AFTER EPISODE 11 YOU'RE LITERALLY MEANT TO REWATCH THE SHOW WHY WOULDN'T YOU DO IT#anyway. thank you so much for asking anon!!!#m: ask#top 5#bl shows#history 3 trapped#atots#old fashion cupcake#triage

"like, once he's got miu and gonta killed, it's like nooo im totally not acting out because i feel extremely guilty. nooo this kamikaze plan is definitely not a direct result of that. i am simply the antagonist. im evil and crazy and this is what is in character for me. this is simply my curtain call."
I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT LIKE THAT NOOO. but YES omg that. plays SUCH a part. he's trying SO hard to make himself completely logical and cold and calculating to help everyone without all those silly caveats. but he's HUMAN and he FEELS and he's doing this to help everyone and he feels so so bad about everything he's doing (except he's not, obviously, that's sooo dumb why would he feel bad about helping everyone? you're so dumb :/ NO HE'S NOT CRYING SHUT UP)
ohh and that SO helps him detach from everything doesn't it. he so THOROUGHLY sees himself as the antagonist because of his own guilt that he starts planning his own downfall, literally becoming his own worst enemy because he cannot let this shit continue but also he's the one doing it? and it's for the good of everyone? but that's what every villain says.
(man writes his own narrative. tsumugi who?)
(no seriously my most self-indulgent headcanon is that so much of kokichi's bullshit was completely unplanned. like they wrote the characters and some of their progression but they did NOT plan for this so every time some more crazy bullshit happens and tsumugi's got her whole "omg O_O that's so weird guys!!" schtick going it's almost COMPLETELY genuine because internally she's genuinely just going "what the fuck??? i did not sign up for this shit." layers upon layers of pretending. also it's my silly little way of letting kokichi win in my brain. because he DID confuse the mastermind. even if it was mostly just a series of inconveniences.)
anyway your brain is iconic. got me rotating.
im still not over how many crying sprites this guy has - and i also think it's pretty clear when he's fake crying and when he isn't and he certainly was crying for real after the fourth trial.
i think it's very wonderful how emotional he actually is - like, yes, he's logical, smart and he can be cold af. but he also gets happy and sad, he gets devastated and super angry, he gets annoyed and he gets proud. and sure, sometimes he does exaggerate and he lies (a lot) - but i don't think it's all lies. i think he likes to pretend like it is though. and well, what's that one quote... "he wears a mask and his face grows to fit it" or smth like that
and i think that's an important aspect - because no matter how much you tell yourself that it's just a role, a mask - in the end you're still the one doing everything. you are how you act.
and i think kokichis very self aware in this aspect. ch 4 happens and he knows, this isn't something he can come back from. he fucked up beyond repair. and while he did already believe himself to be the villain, and perhaps this was a self fulfilling prophecy of a kind, i think actually having something like basically killing two people on your conscience gives it a whole different weight.
i think he had to confront the reality at this point and i think it made him despair a bit - which then leads to the kamikaze plan. (because why does someone who was just willing to sacrifice two people for his own survival suddenly choose to basically kill himself? and trust someone else to end the game?)
-
i love the hc that kokichi did genuinely derail the whole game! i think it's credible enough too, considering the absolute mess that was chapter 6.
and monokuma sometimes really seemed to have personal beef with him which to me says that he was actually getting pissed at him lol
tsumugi also seemed to be quite wary of him - though you can also interpret that as her setting him up as the antagonist ig. i think it was both.
-
my brain is very honored â„ïž
i very much enjoy yours too :D
#i hope my word vomit made sense lol#it's like 3am for me#tbh i personally still believe that kokichi faked his death đ§#the crux of the argument is that we never saw his corpse and that's like mystery genre 101#no body no death#there's more hints towards it but i kinda forgot some but there's write ups around#but that would also come with a lot of new questions and youd have to recontextualize and stuff

Im so happy you chose to drop another chapter early for us! Iâve been absolutely dying to read more. And can I just say that gif you chose đ his smile. Damn đ«
So you know Iâm also a fan of procedurals too and I love how you built up the firehouse in this. They do feel like such a family with the good natured bickering and I love all the personalities you managed to get in. Jack really embodied the probie perfectly with his eagerness to please and learn. Meg is certainly an interesting character. I kinda loved her sarcastic, spitfire personality. Sheâs definitely going to be an interesting one for sure. Intrigued to see chuck in this and again, similar to Gordon, knowing what we know about him on the show Iâm intrigued as to what youâre going to do with his character.
I do wonder, because I know how clever a writer you are, is this story with Henry going to come back? Or is it just as it appears on the surface⊠giving jack a taste of how dark the job can be.
But deans thoughts of the reader just had me grinning so much! How heâs instantly drawn to her and the little details he fixes on. It made me all warm inside đ„°đ„°
I loved the interaction between the two, the nerves and flirty banter was adorable. And the fact she baked to feed the five thousand was both hilarious and apt considering itâs the fire house.
But oh are you kidding me? This? This right here is the moment he decides to rein it in, curb his behaviour and be professional. Damn girl. Youâre killing me đ I was sad to see Dean already assume heâs not going to be good enough, though thatâs perfect for his character!
But the teasing đ ââThanks again, Lieutenant Winchester,â she mocked in a saccharine sweet voice. Then she lowered it into an exaggerated mimic of his deeper one, âCall me Dean, baby girl. Fucking priceless. You should get your own Hallmark movie.ââ I absolutely cackled at this one. I would pay to hear Meg do that impression of dean. And then benny and Gordon also didnât disappoint⊠âBenny and Gordon looked at him like heâd just denounced Led Zeppelin (his favorite band of all time).â Brilliant.
But ooh, first comment that has me wondering about Gordon⊠is he going to try it with the reader too? That would be interesting. Either way, I didnât like his line and it gave such a stark contrast to deans own thoughts about her.
I love that youâve also jumped straight into the drama. Not only do we have a murder, but a string of them and the same mark of the murderer of Mary Winchester. Damn youâre going deep here my friend and I love it. I look forward to trying to solve the case as this progresses. I do agree with Cas though, John keeping things from his boys never ends well.
Again I just want to say Iâm so happy the reader has a friend like Dre. That flashback scene to Nick was foul. Iâm not at all surprised he did it but itâs just such disgusting behaviour. I look forward to the reader ultimately getting the best of him as it has to happen right?
I enjoyed seeing the relationships build more with the guys. Cas and Megs relationship kinda sounds like my worst nightmare. I just couldnât live with crazy like that đ it works for some I guess though lol. Love Sam and Eileen and I hope we get more of them too! I again loved the ribbing they gave him for his dating history. The carpet burns but made me laugh. Interesting about dean and jos past relationship and the reasons he backed off. Iâm guessing that might get brought up again at some pointâŠ
I CANT BELIEVE YOU LEFT IT THERE. HOW COULD YOU DO THAT đ man itâs not even a cliffhanger yet and Iâm dying for more. I just thought we were going to get some good stuff and Dean was finally going to go for it đđ
I absolutely canât wait for the next chapter. Iâm hooked on this series completely already đ great job my friend, this was amazing!
Smoke Eater - Part 2
Pairing: Firefighter!Dean Winchester x F. ReaderÂ
Summary: Dean Winchester is the cocky, but well-respected Lieutenant at Firehouse 25. He leads by example, but heâs also known to break a few hearts. Heâs starting to crave something heâs never had, though. Something stable. Something real.Â
Thatâs when he meets you, on a truly terrible day, trapped in a rickety old elevator.  Â
AN: I was overwhelmed by the response on Part 1 (in the BEST way). đ„č Thank you so much for everyone who read and sent me your lovely amazing comments! Here's Part 2 a bit early for ya. đ
đ„Series Masterlist
Word Count: 6,400 Tags/Warnings: Idiots flirting, with a side of sexual harassment. đȘ
Part 2: "Lieutenant Winchester"
Firehouse 25 was just as much a house as it was a home.
Especially for Dean Winchester.
In the common room, he sat down at his preferred corner of the sofa with a cup of coffee. By now, the guys knew this was his spot, perfectly angled toward the new flatscreen TV someone donated last month.
Up until then, theyâd had to hotwire the same tank from 1995, which had only got basic cable. Now at least the newer smart TV came with a subscription to Netflix, courtesy of the donor.Â
Dean raised his favorite Batman mug to his face, expecting to imbibe some rich dark roast. What he got was a travesty.
Spitting out the brown soil water back into the mug, he coughed and grimaced.
âJack!â he called out.
Jack Kline, the newest addition to the house, raised his head from where he was trying to scramble eggs in the open kitchen directly behind the couch.
âYes, Lieutenant?â he replied.
âWhy does this coffee taste like ass?â Dean asked. His voice was still gruff with sleep, as he depended on his morning coffee to wake him up, not assault his tongue.
Behind him, Jack blinked in confusion. âUhâŠâ
Dean finally turned around and gave the younger man a raised brow.
âWhat brand did you buy, Candidate?â he asked.
A candidate was a freshly graduated firefighter on probation. They were the rookie, the bottom rung of the totem pole, and Jack was that proverbial whipping post.
âUmâŠâ Jack went to find the coffee canister heâd put away in the cupboards. He showed Dean the red plastic jug. âFolgers. It was on sale.â
âFuck me,â Dean muttered. âNever Folgers, Candidate. Anything but fucking Folgers. The one thing we donât skimp out on is quality joe.â
âThat ainât nothinâ but dirt water, son,â Benny remarked, as he and Gordon entered the common room. Benny held a to-go mug heâd brought from home. After heâd seen what Jack brought for groceries yesterday, heâd taken no chances.
âWhat you wanna get is Gevalia,â Benny added.
âThat European crap?â said Gordon. He took his usual spot at the dining table, leaning back in his chair. It left Benny to sit at the other end of the couch with Dean.
âBetter than that piss water you drink,â Benny said with a smirk. Gordon raised a brow at him.
âTea is medicinal, jackass.â The Black man raised a finger to punctuate his point. âItâs good for you. Unlike that carburetor fluid yâall drink.â
âWhatever, man,â Dean said, even though a grin edged at his lips. âAll I know is, we need premium coffee, stat. Or itâs gonna be a cranky shift.â
âI can go to the store real quick,â Jack offered.
Say what you want about the kidâs poor taste in grocery buying, he was always willing to jump in when you needed him.
âNah, stay on breakfast,â said Dean. âIâll go afterwards. But remember, today youâre practicing rappelling drills.â
Jack nodded. âAnd lunch duty. And helping clean the truck, and all the bathroomsâŠdid I miss anything?â
Dean shared a look with Gordon. Not only did he drive the truck, but he was one of the men Dean relied on most, as he had the next highest seniority on the job out of the whole firehouse.
Well, except for Benny Lafitte, Captain of the Rescue Squad. Squad members were considered specialists in complex rescue situations. They were highly trained on more sophisticated technical rescue equipment and rappelling, even scuba diving.
It took long years for a firefighter to make it onto Squad; something that Dean used to have ambitions for. But ever since he got promoted to Lieutenant on Truck 79, he realized that his role in this house was best served on the Truck, not on Squad.
âIf he gets through all that, Meg might have something for him too,â Gordon said.
âOh, donât bring me into this,â remarked a droll voice. âIâve already got one pound puppy to look after.â
Their Paramedic in Charge strode in with Chuck on her heels. Theyâd just pulled into the firehouse driveway on Ambulance 7.
âNice. Thatâs how you talk about your partner of three years?â Chuck said with a frown. Meg turned to him with a wry grin.
âOnly the ones who can hack it on my Ambo,â she replied. âWhat can I say. Youâre special, Shurley. Either that, or a glutton for punishment.â
Gordon shook his head and looked over at Jack.
âCareful with that one. She chewed and hacked out her last partner in under a month.â
âPoor guy didnât even transfer,â Dean added, making a âflatliningâ motion with his hand. âHe just quit. Dropped out of the Fire Academy that same day.â
Not all firefighters were made through Megâs department, but it was a common route, working as a paramedic while getting put through your paces in the Fire Academy. Dean himself had gone straight to the Academy after getting his EMT certification.
But at Deanâs words, Jackâs eyes widened a fraction. Meg turned to him with an almost feline smile.Â
âHow was the call?â Benny asked her, speaking of the job theyâd just returned from. Megâs expression dimmed a little, as did Chuckâs as they both sat down at the table.
âAh, just Henry again,â she said. âOverdosed on his insulin.â
Benny frowned, while Dean shook his head. Jackâs brows furrowed.
âWhoâs Henry?â he asked.
Meg sat back in her chair with a subtle sigh. Knowing his work partnerâs mood, Chuck answered the young manâs question.
âHeâs homeless, lives by the river,â he said. âHeâs one of our âregulars,â you could say. When we get the call, usually heâs passed out. Dehydration. But sometimes itâs more serious.â
âYou canât take him to the hospital?â Jack asked in concern.
âToday we did,â Meg said. Her brown eyes met Jackâs, her mouth in a thin line. âBut without health insurance, thereâs only so much they can do after they get him stable.â
That fell a bit heavily into the room. It wasnât a pleasant fact, but it was the reality. Jack was learning more and more about that aspect of this job, and learning if he could handle the darker shades of what it could bring.
âWell, breakfast is ready,â he said, bringing a large plate of eggs and toast onto the counter. Dean tossed him an appreciative half-smile and got up from the couch.
âThanks, kid,â he said, walking over along with everyone else. He took a moment to pat Jack on the shoulder.
âWhat do you want to do first: run drills, or help me and Gordon wash the truck?â Dean asked.
Jack looked up with a smile. âCan we run drills first?â
Dean nodded, grinning back at him. âGood answer.â
The rest of the Truck and Squad crews ambled in at both the announcement and the smell of food. And before long, the common room was filled with conversation, good-natured teasing, and shitty coffee all around.  Â
From his vantage point facing the open door to the driveway, Benny caught sight of a young woman heading towards the double doors with a large tupperware bin in hand. Bonnie the receptionist happened to be coming in at the same time. You asked her a question Benny couldnât quite hear.
âDean⊠Oh, youâre looking for Lieutenant Winchester?â Bonnie asked. Her voice tended to carry. âRight in there, hun.â
âWell, that sure is interesting,â Benny murmured with a smile. He glanced over slyly at his friend. âHeads up, brother.â
Dean looked up from his plate of eggs expectantly. Benny gestured over with his eyes, just as you walked into the firehouse, both cautious and unsure of where you were going.
Deanâs brows raised. He found himself setting down his plate and getting up from the couch before he really knew what he was doing.
You looked exactly how he remembered. Though this time, you werenât coffee stained in your professional blouse and black pencil skirt. His attention drew briefly downwards to your heels, this time solid black (and even taller than the last pair, damn).
He noticed all the same things he had last time: the shade of your hair, pinned up again with a clip as stray pieces framed your face. The way you carried yourself when you finally saw him, straightening with a subtle confidence in your shoulders, even though you looked a bit nervous. And the pretty curve of your lips when your eyes found his.
âHey, there,â Dean said. He gave you one of his trademark smiles. âGood to see you again.â
âUh, hi,â you said, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. âI guess I donât have to ask if you remember me.â
Dean nodded. ââCourse I do. What can I do for you?â
Your face seemed to freeze up a bit as you looked up at him.
âOh, um, nothing really. I just wanted to say thank you, again,â you said. And you glanced past him, where the rest of the firehouse members were discreetly watching. âAll of you, actually. And my friend told me that firefighters really like foodâŠbut, I mean, doesnât everyone?â
You laughed a little, in a nervous way that made Dean struggle not to smile too much.
âAnyway, I like to bake,â you twittered on, âand I had some time this week afterâŠwell, you know what happened. SoâŠI brought this!â
You raised up your tupperware with a smile.
And you were damn adorable, Dean thought. His own smile deepened as he glanced down at the offering, then at you. He took the container and opened the lid, and was honestly surprised at what he saw.
He couldâve sworn these were Bonafede, just-poured-out-of-the-box Girl Scout cookies. Dozens of them. He saw shortbreads (complete with the little wavy lines), Samoa cookies with the coconut flakes, and even what looked like chocolate covered Thin Mints. They also smelled delicious.
âWow. Thanks, sweetheart,â he said, with genuine warmth. âIâm pretty sure the guys are gonna tear these apart the second I put âem down.â
Your face brightened, and Dean noticed how it reached your eyes with a bit of a blush.
âWell, I hope you guys enjoy,â you said. Your hands fiddled with your purse next.
âHeading off to work now?â he asked.
âYep,â you nodded, with a certain glint in your eye. âI plan on taking the stairs this time.â
Dean raised a brow. âAll 22 floors?â
âGotta get my steps in somehow,â you joked. âBesides, I wouldnât want to become a repeat offender, make you guys come all the way back across town again.â
âAw, I wouldnât mind,â he said, meeting your eyes. And he found that he meant it. In fact, he didnât think heâd mind if your buildingâs elevator broke down every damn week.
Your expression shifted towards amusement. âWell, you must be very dedicated to your job.â
âProtect and serve,â Dean teased back. âThatâs our motto, you know.â
âIsnât that for police officers?â you quipped.
He chuckled. âHey, if the shoe fits.â
âWellâŠâ you considered that with a tilt of your head, more seriously than he expected you to. You met him with a more earnest gaze. âI think it does.â
Right then, Dean had a feeling, deep in his gut, that he needed to know you. He had half a mind to heed his instincts, to take advantage of the signals he thought you were sending him, and ask if he could take you out sometime.
But it was unprofessional here at the firehouse (not that that had stopped him before). Heâd been making efforts to curb that kind of behavior for the past few months.
He also remembered the 30 floors of your massive, fancy office building. He considered the price tags that probably came with the admittedly sexy, high-powered corporate look you had going on. Those were probably a lot more zeros than he was used to seeing on his paycheck.
So for once, he didnât pull the trigger.
âWell, thanks. I really do appreciate that,â Dean replied. His smile then was more sincere, if also more professional. He gestured at the container in his hand. âAnd on behalf of all the guys, thanks for this too.â
âYouâre welcome,â you replied. âI have to go, butâŠthanks again, Lieutenant Winchester.â
âAh,â he shook his head, âjust call me Dean.â
You agreed by smiling, just a little bit more.
âDean.â
He nodded back, sending you off with a smile of his own. He forced himself to taper it down after you left, and he had to turn around to meet his friends. Their grins reminded him of piranhas.
âAll right. Out with it, you freakinâ jackals.â He waved his free hand in a âbring it onâ gesture.
Meg was the first one to burst out laughing. It spearheaded the rest of them, whooping and catcalling and generally being menaces. Even Jack was grinning at his lieutenantâs expense.
Meg got up from her seat and bumped Deanâs shoulder on her way to the kitchen, where she dumped her dishes.
âThanks again, Lieutenant Winchester,â she mocked in a saccharine sweet voice. Then she lowered it into an exaggerated mimic of his deeper one, âCall me Dean, baby girl. Fucking priceless. You should get your own Hallmark movie.â
Dean rolled his eyes. Heâd been prepared for this, but his face was still getting warm.
âShut up, Meg,â he tossed back. They all had an ongoing Family Guy joke that never failed to make their PIC narrow her eyes. And she did so now, giving him a fake grimace as she left the kitchen.
âAll right, kiddos. If you need me, donât,â she said. âChuck! Letâs sort the amboâs inventory.â
âGot it,â her partner nodded. He too got up and placed his dishes in the sink before he took off after Meg.
This left Dean with the rest of the guys, who still gave him knowing smiles as he set your bin of cookies down on the table. He blew out a breath before he returned to the couch and sat down heavily across from Benny and Gordon.
âI never thought Iâd see the day that Dean Winchester bitched out,â Gordon remarked.
Once again, Dean rolled his eyes.
âTruly incredible,â Benny added. He shook his head when Dean just crossed his arms. âShe was eying you like a pork cutlet, and you just let her walk outta here.â
âWeâre in the house, guys. What was I supposed to do?â Dean groused.
Benny and Gordon looked at him like heâd just denounced Led Zeppelin (his favorite band of all time).Â
âGet her goddamn number, Winchester,â said Gordon. The manâs lips curved. âOr at least, introduce her to a brother.â
Dean shot him a glance. Gordon Walker was damn good at driving the truck, but he was also known for being a hunter of the ladies himself.  Â
âShe seemed nice,â Jack put his two cents in with a smile. He was standing behind the couch, leaning his elbows on it. Gordon scoffed, nodding his agreement.
âYeah, with a fat ass too,â he said, sipping his tea.Â
Benny reached over and hit his shoulder to shut him up.Â
âThatâs a lady, Gordon,â he said. Though a suspect smile graced his lips as he glanced at Dean. âA lady with a nice ass.âÂ
Dean shook his head, but he couldnât disagree. The first time he met you, heâd been impressed by the way you stood your ground with your asshole boss. Dean thought you were going to chuck that lethal looking heel at the guy. But behind that steely exterior was a kind little softie.
Today, he got your sweet side. It was equal parts sexy and adorable.Â
And damn if you didnât have a nice ass, nice curves, and a nice mouth.Â
But your eyes, he thought. Those were nothing short of beautiful.Â
About twenty minutes across town, an apartment building was swarmed by police cars. One unit in particular was sealed off with yellow caution tape as a team of officers drifted in and out.Â
What a fucked way to die.
Detective John Winchester observed the unnatural angle that the victimâJerry Stillwell, a certified public accountantâhad his throat cut with a jagged weapon.
It hadnât been clean in the least. And heâd bled out across his work desk and a stack of papers, as well as his desktop computer. He was 45, unmarried, and murdered in his own home in the middle of a Friday afternoon.
The computer wouldnât turn on, and not because of the blood. It had been wiped with magnetized technology, most likely by the intruder. Though there was no sign of forced entry, according to Johnâs partner. The murder weapon was missing as well, though it looked like a knife wound.
John leaned over the on-site medical examinerâs shoulder to peer closer at the manâs wounds. Stillwell had most likely been grabbed from behind. So far, the signs pointed to the culprit being someone the victim knew.
They probably took Stillwell by surprise, but he was a large man. If John had to guess, over 250 pounds, unathletic, but still, not easy to overpower. Likely the suspect was a man over 6 feet; strong, and efficient. Though the messiness of the kill made John think this guy took "pride" his work, so to speak.
âSigns of struggle,â said the M.E. âSkin under the fingernails. He fought back, andâŠhuh.â
Johnâs interest piqued at the manâs shift in tone. âWhat?â
âTake a look at this.â The M.E. was holding Stillwellâs right hand, palm-up, revealing a small burn on the inside of the wrist. Johnâs gaze sharpened on the mark.
âCas, come here,â he said. Across the room, Detective Cas Novak paused in his task of examining the entry points of the apartment to join John at his side. His blue eyes widened a fraction at seeing the burn. It was a symbol of a snake eating its own tail.
âThat makes four,â Cas said.
âYep. Weâve got ourselves a murder cluster,â John said. Cas nodded. He beckoned John to the side, making sure the M.E. was out of earshot before he spoke. âIsnât it time we brought Sam up to speed on this, at least?â
Johnâs brows furrowed.
âNo,â he said. âSamâs an ADA. We donât go to him until we have someone to indict.â
He walked away from Cas, who frowned. John knew damn well that wasnât what he meant. This was the fourth murder within six months of this nature. The fourth to be branded with the mark of AzazelâŠa criminal who supposedly disappeared decades ago.
Shortly after November 2, 1983, the day of Mary Winchesterâs death.
Seeing Dean again had gone better than you thought it would. It left you feeling light and downright cheerful when you left the firehouse this morning. Unfortunately, the great start to your morning only crumbled when you reached your office.
Now, even at the end of your day, finally back at home and in the familiarity of your kitchen, the tension headache was back.
âDre, Iâm tired. Canât we do this another night?â you asked.
Your cell phone was balanced between your ear and your shoulder as you counted out your grandfatherâs pills, and placed them in each âMonday through Sundayâ box in the blue container.
âNo, we absolutely cannot. Because today was horrific,â AndrĂ©a said. âFor me, because my coworker decided to play hookie on the day our top account needed the mockups of their new website. Never mind that she hadnât even started.â
Pause for an aggravated breath, through which you frowned in sympathy. Sheâd told you the entire story over lunch today.
âAnd for you, because Nick once again displayed why heâs a subhuman neanderthal, in spectacular fashion,â she added.
Your grimace deepened at the reminder.
Earlier today, just before a sales meeting you were set to lead, youâd turned away from the conference table to set up the projector. Nick was early for once, making it just him and you in the room.
Heâd sat back in his chair and uttered a remark that set the hairs on the back of your neck on end.
âIâll tell you what, babe. You sure know how to wear a skirt.â
Your back straightened, and slowly you turned. Your face was set in stone, save for a solitary raise of your brow.
âExcuse me?â
Nickâs smirk was lazy as he kicked his feet up on the table. His hand held a tumbler of whiskey. You noted the half empty carafe, which just yesterday had been full and untouched.
âFucking fantastic legs,â he said, vaguely outlining your shape with his hand. âI applaud you. Itâs all veryâŠsexy secretary. Oooh! Sexcretary. Fucking brilliant.â
You gaped, trying to put a clamp on the furious spike in your blood.
âAre you drunk?â you asked incredulously.
He raised his fingers an inch or so apart, scrunching up his face and trying not to laugh.
âActually nah, not at all,â he bluffed.Â
He let his hand fall back into his lap. You shook your head and set down your papers in order to cross your arms.
âGood. Then youâll hear me clearly when I say, Iâm filing a formal complaint with Billie in HR,â you said.
âWhaaat? Why?â he complained. You huffed incredulously.
âFor your little comments, which are getting more and more heinous. Not to mention your excessive drinking during company hours.â
Nick pursed his lips. âChrist on a stick. Canât you take a fucking compliment?â
âNo,â you deadpanned. âWhat I refuse to take is any further sexual harassment. This isnât the first incident I could disclose, but Iâm damn sure youâll want it to be the last.â
He kicked his feet off the table and slowly stood. You didnât want to be afraid of this sloppy, frat boy drunken attitude, but a tendril of trepidation still laced down your spine as you took a step back.
âYou could do that,â he nodded, tilting his head. âOr, Iâll give your Zimmerman account to Josh, along with your commission.â
You frowned, and shock made your entire body tense.Â
âYouâŠyou canât do that!â you exclaimed. Your insides fairly shook with frustration tinged with anger. âIâll sue you.â
âWith what money?â Nick scoffed.
Your brows knitted together then. How the hell would he know anything about your finances?
The man noted your reaction with a nod.
âYeah, I know all about grammy and gramps. Surgeries, funerals, treatmentsâŠâ he said. He leaned against the table with one hand, and still he fairly loomed over you.
He wasn't as broad as someone like Dean, but he was tall and lean. His dirty blonde hair was swept to the side, his blue eyes bearing down on you.
âI am this company. If you donât like it, you can get the fuck out, sweetheart,â he said.
His gaze lowered, roaming your glowering face.
âAnd good luck getting anywhere else without a reference from one of the biggest corporations in Lawrence, Kansas.â
You sighed. Yeah, you mightâve shed some frankly embarrassing tears in the womenâs bathroom after that. You hadnât even told AndrĂ©a the full story, which included the details of his comments, along with his threats.
You didnât want her to worry. And maybe, more selfishly, you were embarrassed at having to deal with it at all.
Truth be told, you still didnât know what the hell you were going to do. About Nick, or your jobâŠbut somehow, getting drunk at a bar seemed about the last thing you should be doing.
âI need a drink,â AndrĂ©a insisted. âWhich means you definitely need a drink. And I know exactly where weâre going.â
After a long moment, you leaned your elbows on the kitchen counter and rubbed through the persistent ache in your forehead. Maybe, just this once, you deserved to forget about reality. Just for a little while.
âFine. Where?â you asked.
âItâs this great bar Meg told me about. The Roadhouse.â
âAh, the usual suspects,â Ellen drawled at the men who managed to find seats at her bar, next to the rest of their party. The Roadhouse was packed on a Friday night, but she always had room for these two.
Benny and Dean wore similar tired, but pleasant smiles as they greeted their esteemed barkeep.
âWhatâs it been, Ellen, a whole shift since Iâve seen your delightful face?â Dean said.
Ellen gave him a mocking smile as she poured him his favorite beer on tap. Dean grinned and clapped his younger brother on the shoulder as he sat down. He and Cas had been waiting for a little while.
âŠWell, maybe longer than a little.
âHey, dude,â Dean said. Sam perked up from his second beer with pursed lips.
âYou know weâve been waiting on you for like an hour, right?â he said.
âAw, donât get your panties in a twist, Sammy,â Dean teased. He nodded his thanks at Ellen when she set his beer in front of him, and a glass of whiskey for Benny. âWe had a last-minute call. Some guy just couldnât wait to start his Happy Hour. Drove his car into the company fountain.â
Samâs brows raised incredulously. He looked over at Benny for confirmation, and the other man gave a resigned nod.
âApparently it set the ducks into a tizzy,â he said. âThe guyâs fine. Probably gonna get slapped with a DUI.â
Dean smirked and raised a finger at both Sam and Cas. âDuck Guyâs your problem now.â
Cas shook his head and raised his beer to his lips.
âNot my department.â
âMine either,â Sam scoffed. Both of them worked in homicide cases, just from the differing sides of law and order. In fact, they worked together more often than Dean and Cas did.
Dean looked over at his friend Cas for a moment. He looked like more of a hot mess than usual, with his tie half undone, and a scruffy half-beard covering his face.
âGeez, man. You look like shit,â Dean remarked. âYou and Meg fighting again?â
âNo,â Cas replied, his brows furrowing. ââŠWell, yes. But nothing more than her usual insanity. Something about the cat preferring to sleep next to me than to her.â
âWell, thatâs not so bad,â Benny said. âMy dog donât like her either.â
âMaybe they can smell that sheâs feral,â Dean quipped. Cas sent him a dry look at that.
âShe threatened to move out,â he revealed. âEven packed a bag at 3:00 in the morning. I spent two hours unpacking what she was re-packing, all while we argued in our underwear, not sleeping.â
Sam and Dean shared bemused looks, while Benny shook his head into his whiskey.
âSo howâd it end up?â Sam asked. Cas sighed and took another long sip of his beer.
âLike it always ends, Sam,â he said, his lips quirking. âWith our neighbors calling the precinct to complain, and me, somehow ending up sleeping on the couch for a crime I didnât commit. If she wants to blame someone, blame the goddamn cat.â
Dean chortled. He brought his beer to his lips, but couldnât resist a light jab at his best friend first.
âDude, I love her like a sister, but your girlfriendâs unhinged,â he said.
Cas could only nod. âMost are, Iâve come to find.â
Sam scoffed and shook his head. âNot mine.â
âYeah, thatâs because Eileen doesnât have to see you more than two minutes at a time,â Dean teased. He and his brother still shared an apartment, and Samâs job as an Assistant District Attorney wrought demanding hours.
Sam shot his brother a flat look.
âOh, Iâm not taking that from the serial playboy,â he said.
Deanâs brows knitted together.
âAll right, calm down,â he said. âIâm not Hugh Hefner.â
âMr. Hit and Run,â Cas added, a smirk gracing his features.
âChief âNo Daddy Issues,ââ Benny tipped in, giving his annoyed, green-eyed friend a sly glance. âWith a side helping of the Clap.â
Deanâs lips pressed into a line. He leveled a finger at Benny.
âThat girl was clean, okay? False alarm,â Dean said. His gaze raised heavenward as he sipped his beer. Thank Christ for that one. âThe rash was just carpet burn.â
Sam shook his head and turned to his brother more seriously.
âBottom line: until you date a woman for more than two weeksâhell, two days at a timeâyou donât get to comment on the happily committed,â he said.Â
Dean rolled his eyes. He knew his track record with relationships. As in, he didnât really have a recordâŠbut it wasnât for lack of trying. At least, not for the past few months.
Sam managed to break Dean out of his thoughts by clearing his throat, pushing his empty bottle across the counter.
âAll right, speaking of. I gotta go,â he said.
âAw, why? We just got here. Let me buy you another,â Dean offered.
Sam shot his brother another knowing look. Dean knew it well; it said, if heâd been here on time, they wouldâve shared the first two drinks.
âIâm picking up Eileen,â Sam said, grabbing his blazer and fixing the collar when he put it on. âThereâs this Latin club she wants to go to.â
Dean raised incredulous brows.
âMy brotherâs going salsa dancing?â
Sam sighed in exasperation, despite his smile. âBye, Dean.â
He shot his other two friends a nod.
âSee you guys.â
Cas and Benny both saw him off with a subtle raise of their drinks, while Dean just shook his head.
âAll right, Samantha,â he called out. Sam didnât bother to turn around as he raised up a choice finger behind him.
Dean snorted into his drink. âVery mature.â
Benny and Cas shared a wry look. They were relieved when Ellenâs daughter Jo came by, picking up the slack for her mom, who was serving a rowdy group of college kids at a nearby table.
âHey, guys. Need another round?â Jo asked. She gave them all a familiar smile, but her eyes lingered on Dean. He gave her a more reserved smile back.
âHey, Jo,â he nodded. âI uhâŠactually think Iâm good right now.â
âMe too,â Cas said. He even stood up and grabbed his trenchcoat in similar fashion as Sam had. The two had paid for their beers before Benny and Dean even got there.
âAw, not you too,â Dean groused.
âIf I donât make dinner, we run the risk of the apartment going up in flames,â Cas informed him. Dean couldnât only assume he was talking about Meg. âDespite working with the Fire Department for ten years, the woman canât manage to boil an egg without supervision.â
Jo raised a brow, but her smile was bemused as she turned to Benny. âAnything for you?â
âNah, darlinâ. Iâm good,â he said. But sensing the unspoken request in her eyes when she glanced at Dean, Benny straightened and raised from his seat. âBut Iâll be back. Needâa hit the head.â
Dean internally sighed as Benny left him alone at the bar. Or, well, relatively alone. Jo lingered in front of him to wash and dry out a few glasses. The air between them was stiff, and a little awkward.
Deanâs thoughts shifted back to his brother then; while he still couldnât believe Eileen had wrangled his gangly Sasquatch of a brother into going dancing, Dean was happy for him. Truly and sincerely. Sam deserved having someone who softened him, made him break away from his endless cases and have some fun.
Dean could also admit, if only to himself, that he was maybe a little jealous. Sam had something good with his girl. Something real.
Dean had carpet burn.
âSo, howâs studying going?â he asked Jo. He couldnât stand awkward silences. âStill planning on giving your mom a heart attack when you get into the Police Academy?â
Joâs blue eyes flicked up to his. She brushed a coil of blond hair behind her ear after she finished drying a glass, and a smile raised the corner of her lips.
âWouldnât be the first time I gave her something to yell about,â she quipped. âBut since you askedâŠmy exam is in three months.â
âGood,â Dean nodded. âYouâve got time. Study your ass off. Keep up the conditioning routine I gave you, and youâll be set. Just donât forget the strength training. Very important.â
âI got it,â she said, this time with a brighter smile. âSome old firefighter gave me some pointers.â
Dean tilted his beer at her accusingly.
âHey, donât pin that old shit on me yet. Bennyâs got more mileage than I doâŠâ
He considered her then, after briefly looking down at the counter.
âWhat?â she said.
He kept his lips tight. âNothinâ.â
âNo, Dean. What?â Jo pressed. âYou want to say something. Say it.â
He blew out a breath and shook his head. Â
âEllenâs not the only one whoâs gonna worry about you on the job, thatâs all,â he said. Jo flickered at a rueful frown.
âThatâs ironic,â she said. âI can handle myself, Dean. Something you so often seem to forget.â
âThatâs not fair, and you know it,â he shot back. His hand tightened around his beer.
Joâs face fell into irritation, mostly to cover up the hurt he saw buried deep behind her eyes. She gave him some relief by glancing away from him.
âAnd this is why we didnât work out,â she muttered. Sighing through her nose, her eyes met his again. âYou know what I hate, more than anything? People worrying.â
Dean carded his fingers through his hair, his brows knitting together in aggravation.
âYeah, well, maybe they have good reason to,â he said. He couldâve predicted the way she tightened up. âAnd if I remember right, you did your fair share of hand-wringing the next time I responded to a fire on the job.â
He knew it was a low blow. But his point was made, and he fully expected the anger in Joâs tight frown. Theyâd dated for a few weeks, mostly in secret.
That had been enough for Ellen to blow her top. Not because she had anything against DeanâŠjust his job: at the very same firehouse her late husband had once served.
So Dean had backed off. Heâd ultimately felt he had to end it. And clearly, Jo still resented him for it.
Slowly, however, the fire in her eyes dimmed. Her finger tapped on her side of the bar counter.
âYou think I donât worry anymore just because weâre not together?â she asked him.Â
Dean didnât have a good answer for her. So his gaze fell to his nearly empty beer.
But he was even more relieved when Benny finally got back from the bathroom, or wherever heâd fucked off to for the past few minutes.
He did seem to know that he was interrupting a rather tense moment. Seeing as neither Dean nor Jo wanted to break the silence, Benny supposed it fell on him.
He reclaimed his seat and raised a smile up at Jo.
âI think Iâm ready for the next round,â he said, glancing at Deanâs soured mood. âTwo whiskeys, please, Joanna.â
Jo treated Benny with a half-smile. He was the only one besides her mother who called her Joanna (and got away with it). After one last look at Dean, she reached over for the Jim Beam.
You met Andréa at the bar in your own car, just in case you needed to dip out early to check on Grandpa George. He was happy to see you going out.
âYouâre pretty as a doll, sweetheart,â heâd said, patting your cheek after you kissed his goodbye.
The thought made you smile, even though you thought you were dressed casually in your dark wash jeans and blouse. When Andréa met you outside the bar, she nodded in approval.
âGood. I like the hint of sexy,â she said, plucking at the sweetheart neckline of your top. You rolled your eyes and tried to cover up the cleavage a little, but she batted at your hand.
âNo, no. Leave your professionalism at work,â she said. âTonight, youâre going to relax and have some fun.â
It was hard to think about loosening up when you were literally getting belittled and threatened at workâŠbut you supposed she had a point. You always had to be put together. You had to be sharp, because this world wouldnât hand you anything on a silver platter.
And not to mention, you couldnât just think about yourself. You also had to provide and take care of your grandfather too. He was the only family you had left, and you were it for him tooâŠ
But you took in a slow, deep breath. Tonight, you could have a couple of drinks with your friend. You could just be yourself, with no responsibilities other than not getting too drunk to drive yourself home later.
So with a sigh, you smiled and linked your arm with Andréa as you headed inside the Roadhouse.
It looked kind of divey from the outside, a worn-looking brown building with a faded red sign. But inside it was all dark wood and leather barstools and rows of soft lighting overhead.
There were records displayed on the wall; Princeâs Purple Rain, the Beatlesâ Sgt. Pepper, and David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, among others. Bostonâs âMore Than a Feelingâ played on the wall speakers.
There were several tables, both high top and regular four-seaters, as well as a long bar that spanned the far wall, where rows and rows of liquor were showcased. You followed AndrĂ©aâs lead to the bar, where you took a seat at the far end and tried to feel like you belonged here. You couldnât remember the last time youâd gone out to a place like this.
âThis is nice,â she leaned over into your ear to say. âNext time my cousin should meet us here. Sheâs a handful, but I think youâd like her.â
You agreed with a smile. âIf sheâs anything like you, I think Iâm well trained to handle your brand of insanity.â
Andréa leveled you with a playfully mocking look.
âAh, youâve got jokes tonight. Okay.â She waved over the blonde bartender.
âHi, ladies,â she greeted. âIâm Jo. Whatâre we starting off with tonight?â
Before you could order for yourself, Andréa grabbed your arm and spoke over you.
âDo you have absinthe?â she asked.
Your eyes widened. âWhat?! Iâm not drinking thatââ
âSure do,â Jo replied in amusement.
âGreat,â said AndrĂ©a. You didnât like her sly grin. âSheâll have an Aunt Roberta. Iâll have a vodka cranberry.â
âWhat the hell is an Aunt Roberta?â you asked.
Jo listed the ingredients on her fingers. âA nice molotov of brandy, vodka, gin, blackberry liqueur, and of course, absinthe.â
Jesus Christ. You shot Andréa a glare, even though you were trying to dim your smile.
âAre you trying to chill me out or fucking end me?â you asked.
AndrĂ©a smirked. âWhatever it takes.â
You rolled your eyes, but you nodded your agreement. Joâs smile remained as she went to prepare your drinks. Meanwhile, your eyes wandered as you once again took in your surroundings.
Really is a cool place, you thought. And it was busy without being overbearingly crowded. There were even a few seats between you and the rest of the patrons at the bar. Your gaze drew a path onwards, eventually reaching the other end of the bar.
There you caught sight of red flannel over a black undershirt, familiar broad shoulders, and an even more familiar face. Your eyes widened a fraction as his met yours, gleaming with recognitionâŠand interest.
That slow smile of his was familiar too. It made a lance of heat run down your spine. You gripped the counter, mostly to steady yourself as you let out a breath.
Lieutenant Winchester.
AN: *rubs hands together* It begins. đ
Lol how'd you like Dean's little moment with the reader at the firehouse? Plus the introduction of the rest of our cast!
(And a possible serial killer on the loose?) Though sorry about Nick. He's a douchecanoe.
Next Time:
Anticipation and nerves coiled together in your lower belly. You turned to your friend, who was already sipping at her vodka cranberry.
âDre, help me,â you pleaded.
Andréa discreetly followed the path of your gaze, and her brows raised. A smirk curved her lips.
âOh, babe. You need to help yourself,â she replied.
âI havenât done that in a while,â you admitted. Your dating life had been sorely lacking, between the demands of your job and taking care of things at home. âIâm gonna say something demented.â
Andréa huffed in amusement.
âSo? Thatâs half the fun,â she said.

Hi, danhoemei.....if you don't mind me asking who are your favorite romantic relationship's couples in books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series (canon or non-canon)? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
Hello thanad-zid, the curious sweetheart đ I don't mind at all, you actually made me think about the series I haven't thought about for so long! (I'll answer excluding danmei because that's material for a whole separate post and I partly answered that)
19 days by Old Xian - tianshan
(and zhanyi who I love with my whole heart but tianshan is The One for me akjvsbdv)
Tough on the outside but soft on the inside delinquent and the devilish lonely rich boy who'll go batshit crazy if his friends are in danger. Both of them learning to trust and very slowly showing their vulnerable sides to each other.... I can't say much, it's already a spoiler that they become closer because in the story they start as strangers or even "enemies". They're also secondary characters so they make appearance later in the story and gradually gain more importance (well, it started with them being secondary but tbh now they're one of the main characters with a lot of focus AND I AM SO HAPPY). But anyway, I am absolutely obsessed with them.
The original main pair (zhanyi) has completely different dynamic and vibe, but I love them and enjoy their story and relationship very much as well <3
This series has such variety of multilayered characters who honestly could have their own separate manhuas. I absolutely recommend 19 days, it started like absolute crack but gained so much depth and action and angst and questioning yourself and 'am I abnormal for having feelings for you' and trust and progress in relationships and-
I love this manhua so much, please read it, if you enjoy danmei you'll enjoy it.
Their story by Tan Jiu
You want a sweet story about a lesbiab who fell in love at first sight and then pursued her love interest, firstly becoming friends and learning about each other, everything among a lot of humor and shenanigans? Well here you go.
Brooklyn 9-9 - Jake and Amy & Friends - Monica and Chandler
I see similarities so I put them together lmao. They are wholesome and sweet, support each other no matter what, work for their dreams and for people they hold dear. The guys are hella funny but also very smart and cool, the girls are intense and ambitious and need to have everything under control but are also very sweet and loving. The shows are light and hilarious, good as a stress relief.
The Good Place - Chidi and Eleanor
First of all I recommend The Good Place in general, a wild ride of unexpected twists and turns, each reveal more âwhaaatâ than the previous one, with diverse representation and filled with philosophical questions and lessons, created by people who love philosophy. Its humor is incredible as well akjvndfv
Chidi and Eleanor are complete opposites - a nerd with severe anxiety issues who spent his whole life buried in books, and a bi disaster who partied hard, made a lot of bad things, and cared mostly about herself. They learn from each other and complement each other, all the while growing and changing right in front of our eyes.
Aggretsuko - Retsuko and Haida
HAIDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA im love him your honor. Get a partner who can do both (be sweet and supportive, be badass and taking no bullshit). I truly believe they'd be happy and just right for each other, and I want them to be together đđ
Yuri on ice - Yuri and Victor
akhdbsdjkfnlsdf if you watched this then you know why. I recommend it if you want a good quality lgbt anime with an interesting story, diverse characters, and beautiful skating scenes đ I love this wholesome duo so much T^T
Svvord of Truth - Richard and KahIan
I kinda feel like I owe it to them to mention them here, probably my earliest couple on this list. Itâs an old high fantasy series which I read when I plunged straight into puberty, I haven't read it as a more mature person so I wonder if there are some harmful stereotypes I didn't see or how many typical tropes there are (well e.g. the main guy is so ridiculously overpowered and smarter/holier-than-thou, and there is a lot of black and white there) but also itâs a really complex world with interesting mechanics. However, what truly makes me remember this series fondly is because it was there with me when I was going through a lot of hardships, showing me a rich world with many people worth loving, strong women who I admired and strived to be, wise people of different backgrounds, cultures, and ages. It taught me how important it is to be kind and compassionate, that no matter how desperate your situation can get there is always hope and a way, that people who care about you will be there for you when you need them, and that you need to reciprocate as well. To always âthink about the solution, not about the problemâ which became the thing I repeat to myself every time I start struggling. The main couple also showed me what I want to strive for in a good relationship - support, understanding, standing by each otherâs side no matter what, deep respect for each other and treating each other as equals, working for the relationship, and most importantly trusting each other. The series might be a typical high fantasy but for my growing and messed up mind it was a good teacher who reminded me of things we consider obvious but tend to forget, and might have played a significant role in who I am now.
Ok, I wanted to add a short bullet-point list of some other couples but this list is already long so letâs end here xd
#ask#ask opinion#thanad zid#not danmei#recommendations#19 days#their story#brooklyn 99#the good place#aggretsuko#yuri on ice#long post#i see some recurring tropes skdjvnsdkfn#slow burn#rivals to lovers#power couple#teasing characters#a lot of humor#getting together#wholesome relationships#feral characters#also I realised that although I've been a bookworm since childhood and spent my whole days and nights on reading#these were all action oriented or fantasy or scientific books and even tho there were couples there I never really gotten into them#and apparently my need for romance was filled by danmei and anime and later series#I have a lot of ships from anime but that would be too long list xd#anyway there is one more ship I'd include in the main list bc I'm very much into it literally at the moment#but that fandom is so toxic and even violent that I'd rather not mention the pair#well that was fun thank you for your ask! đđđđ#I need to go back to 19 days and their story bc I haven't read the updates for A YEAR aaaaa#and I saw that there is so much going on with tianshan and fandom is going wild lmao

Thank you for answering my question. Both Murphy and Daryl are of course Norman, but their coloring is a bit different as well as their hair length, muscle, and like you said, tattoos. Like Murphy is pale compared to Daryl who spent so much time outside (Though I'm sure that will change) and his hair is a little darker, etc. And you definitely do a great job at writing them as different men.
Hey again Anon!!
Thanks for the compliment!! I'm glad that my goal had been achieved. Just to add on additional differences that I made for the characters (both Daryl and Murphy amd possibly Connor and Murphy or just certain physical characteristics they have that they already had or I tweaked) if I haven't really mentioned yet:
Murphy's hair is a darker brown than Daryl's. Im having Daryl's hair color be in between shades with the MacManus brothers. I did this on purpose to, again, keep Murphy and Daryl separate characters. Connor's hair is more of an ash brown which kind've makes it look like a dark blonde in certain lighting. Daryl's is more of a chestnut color I think (that's a decent medium shade of brown, right? Might have to go back to my notes for that).
Norman's tattoos (the actor) had to he split between Daryl and Murphy to make them separate individuals as well as to avoid them basically being clones despite being different characters. I had Daryl keep most of Norman's tattoos with Murphy getting the Norman tattoo for him. I'm also thinking of other characters getting tattoos which is opening up a small headcannon that I like which is that one of the any odd jobs Daryl had when Merle wasn't around is that he used to be a tattoo artist. I even have a cute scene woth Daryl and Sean about tattoos in part 6 (season 3, though it's towards the end of the part). Daryl is also going to be the one who gets the skull tattoo that Norman got a few years ago to celebrate his involvement to Death Stranding
I also plan for all three of them to grow their hair out, but at different lengths and styles. @lilythemadqueen had a possible look for BDS3 Murphy since there have been rumors and rumors about a 3rd movie. It's Murphy with hair linger than what Daryl grew out and had for the last few seasons, but had the bangs pulled back into a bun (like what Jesus had in s9 I think). Connor's is kinda more viking looking I think. I need to go back and find the pic that I really liked to show it. He does like the undercut with long hair on the top of his head that can be pulled back into a short ponytail (like Sokka from ATLA). That's in much layer parts though, but I don't mind spoiling this for everyone đ
I'm also thinking of possible crazy scars to give the ManManus brothers. Though, they have some pretty crazy ones from their days as the Saints. Like scars around Connor's wrists from when he was handcuffed around the toilet. Even OC has a couple scars on her arms from when she'd been grazed by stray bullets (both in BDS1 and BDS2). Along with the scars the two have from burning their wouldst closed after the shootout with Il Duce (Noah).
Basically, I'm really trying to keep tabs over their looks. From their hair to tattoos to scars. You wo t believe how many times I've had to go back to see how many tattoos I gave my OC (the answer: too damn many, but it's too late to change that lol).
Then, there's also trying to remember that every character has gone through some kind of trauma (I'm now realizing that my characters baseline is TRAUMA), so I'm trying to make sure to honor that and have them act in a way that they should and adapt around it to survive what they're going through (and maybe even one day learn to move past their trauma so it doesn't hinder them in the future (looking my OC for that (see s5 lol)).
Sorry đ
đ
đ
I got so excited talking about this that I ended up rambling too much. Anyway, thanks again for your previous ask and thanks for the compliment. I really do hope you continue to enjoy reading my series as it progresses.
Feel free to reach out if you have anymore questions in the future (if they're spoiler-y questions, I'll probably have to be vague/cryptic, if only so I dk t give away all the fun details).

hm, while im still here and thinking about it
iâve seen a lot of posts comparing rayaari to catradora, mostly positively but some also using the similarities to call rayaari an abusive/toxic ship, and i feel like a lot of people are missing key differences. and for me, as someone who was not completely satisfied with s5 of spop and never liked or shipped catradora for a lot of reasons, but who deeply enjoys and ships rayaari, thereâs something very key that raya does right which i believe spop did wrong with respect to rayaari and catradora.
and it has everything to do with their history.
before adora left the horde, she had a history of physical and emotional abuse--primarily by shadow weaver, yes, but also by catra. we get a lot of memories from their past, and their relationship involved a very toxic codependency with a heavy dose of abuse--adora trying to protect catra but, when she failed, catra lashing out at her, verbally and physically (that scene where young!catra slashed across young!adoraâs face w her claws left my stomache in knots for hours). they were set against each other by shadow weaver in a very classic scapegoat vs the golden child dichotomy, but that doesnât erase the harm catra did long before adora left the horde.
(in many ways, their relationship was very like zuko and azulaâs, although their roles in their primary caretakerâs eyes are reversed, with adora being most like zuko if zuko had been the golden child, and catra being similar to azula if sheâd been the scapegoat instead. adora being the âpreferred childâ in shadow weaverâs eyes doesnât make her any less SWâs victim, and it didnât do anything to protect her from catra when she lashed out as a result of SWâs abuse. in fact, iâd argue that it made her even more vulnerable, and we see in the show that she winds up blaming herself for not being able to save catra when they were children--even though that very much was not her job--and this is never properly addressed by the narrative. at least, not to my satisfaction. obviously, mileage on that particular score may vary.)
when you combine their history along with every awful thing catra did in the show proper, adora coming to realize she was in love with catra the whole time and not requiring (nevermind receiving) any kind of actual apology for that abuse or for, yknow, trying to destroy the world multiple times, it winds up leaving a very sour taste in my mouth. it doesnât help that catra kept digging herself deeper and deeper for the entirety of the first four seasons, despite multiple chances to change and begin to make amends for her behavior (and lord knows iâm not trying to say a redemption arc should be linear, but you have to make progress in order to regress, and catra never got that far), which left the entirety of her redemption arc to fight for space in the final season with an entire galactic war.
except that it didnât even really do that. catra saved glimmer at the eleventh hour (and that was a sacrifice, i wonât deny it) and then got brainwashed, and... that was it. she was âacceptedâ by the group almost immediately, and all she had to do was stop being grouchy at them for saving her life.
did she ever actually apologize for anything she needed to apologize for, by the way? i genuinely canât remember. i know she said she was âworking onâ her anger and apologized for that but like, babe, thereâs four seasons worth of shit and eighteen years before that which you really need to unpack before you should be telling adora youâre in love with her and starting a relationship. iâm just saying.
and all of this is without talking about the fact that, especially in regards to relationship development and plot pace, you will tend to expect more out of a television show compared with a movie. iâm a lot more ok with namaariâs redemption being a little rushed and coming down to a few of her own choices and the other characters choosing to forgive her in a less than 2 hour movie than i am with a television show that takes place over 5 seasons with 4 sets of 12 episodes. even cartoon length (roughly 22 minutes an episode when you exclude the credits). thatâs a few hours shy of 20 hours worth of material. they had a lot to do, sure, but they also had a lot of room to do it in, and it was a deliberate choice not to start catraâs redemption even a season earlier--which, again given what it had to compete with in the last season, was ultimately to the showâs detriment imo.
so...........that was a very long tangent, and iâm sorry, i just have a lot of residual feelings of dissatisfaction about spop and catradora which i still needed to let out and this was a convenient post for it. but my ultimate point is, by comparison, rayaari is a much less toxic dynamic.
namaari betrays rayaâs trust in the beginning, sure, and there are hints that they probably had a lot of run-ins during the six year timeskip given their familiarity, but in all that time they were enemies. thatâs why enemies-to-lovers usually doesnât involve outright abuse, unless thereâs another facet to the relationship (ie catradoraâs relationship pre-series)--because two people on opposite sides of a violent conflict being violent towards one another does not equal abuse.
and yeah, namaari betrays rayaâs attempt at trust again--or seems to, resulting in the cliffside scuffle leading into the movieâs climax--but she also comes back of her own volition. she returns with her shard of the dragon gem, helping raya and her friends fend off the druun, when she could have run and attempted to save herself. that, i believe, is what ultimately prompts raya to trust her one last time. i believe that namaari believes she was about to put down her crossbow and never intended to actually shoot sisu--the horror on her face when the dragon falls to her death is proof enough of that, as is her final desire to just... give up and let raya take her revenge--and she proved that to raya by coming back and risking her life to help them in that final battle.
of course they probably have a lot to talk about and namaari has a lot to apologize for, but i can forgive a two hour movie for leaving that to the viewerâs imagination (especially when there is no expectation of a romantic relationship between the characters in canon--itâs catradora being canon which makes all the rest of it land so poorly for me) than i can an 18 hour television series.
again, opinions may differ on this score, and thatâs fine. i just wanted to share my own thoughts.
#raya and the last dragon#rayaari#raya#namaari#disney raya#spop#catradora salt#only sort of but just in case

Some thoughts on Deltarune Chapter 2
Iâm going to try to avoid being effusively praising of this gameâŠdemoâŠchapter. Iâm sure thereâs plenty of people doing that already, and I am more than cognizant of the platform I am presenting this post on. Thatâs going to be tough, yeah, but Iâll make it work.
Iâm also going to try to avoid spoiling the thing too hard, even though there are spoilers everywhere and certain supposed-to-be obscure things are widespread at this point. But, someone could still end up reading this before they play it, so Iâm going to hold my tongue a fair bit as a result.
With that in mind: new chapter is obviously out, so how does it stack up?
âŠI think it might be better than the first one. In my opinion.
Undertale 22 over here is a continuation of the first chapter, released about 3 years ago, taking place literally the next day in-universe. Chapter 1 coming out was a Huge Deal, not in the least a result of how it was announced. Despite the distance since the release, the Undertale fandom was still simmering along, and with an announcement that appears tied to one of that gameâs biggest mysteries, it was no wonder that it was going to make some waves.
Chapter 2âs release was a surprise for different reasons. I believe at the time of the first demo, Toby stated that the remaining chapters would release as one, but that it would take a long time on account of the game being so much more complex than Undertale and not playing as much to his strengths. Of course, a lot happens in 3 years, especially with the last couple being as they have been, so Chapter 2 got its own release about a week ago.
I suppose I should stop beating around the bush and explain why I think Ch.2 is better than Ch.1, huh? I think thereâs three main factors that swayed me.
Prologues and introductions always have to do one thing, and that is to familiarise the audience with the setting and characters. Despite sharing many side characters with its pseudo-prequel, Deltarune Chapter 1âs main cast are all completely fresh, and those side characters are in an unfamiliar form, and so much of the game is spent establishing cast dynamics. We have to learn who Susie, Kris, and Lancer are, and how the dynamics between them will be working for the stories to come.
However, there is the slight difference that Deltarune Chapter 1 is kind of a complete story. Itâs like the pilot to a tv series- you have to establish characters, yeah, but you still have to get the plot spinning, and those characters still need to have small arcs over the course of the story. Susie and Lancer are kind of the only ones to go through actual arcs across the first chapter, given Ralseiâs currently kind of static character and Kris being a blank slate entirely.
By contrast, Chapter 2 has these dynamics in play from the get-go, and we get to more deeply explore them as a result, making the character work overall stronger. And while there are new characters at play, two of the three (arguably four) new players are already established in Chapter 1, and so we donât need to spend as much time getting to know them. Character interactions are at the core of many styles of storytelling, and with the quirky characters we have to work with, getting more time seeing them do that is great!
The second of why I like Chapter Two better is just the gameplay. A fair few little tweaks have been made to make the whole thing cleaner- enemies now have a parallel meter to their HP bar to show how close to sparable they are, so pacifistic players have a better idea of their progress in longer fights. For those players, actually having Susie and Ralsei get ACT options is great, seeing as it makes them substantially more useful (especially Susie). When I replayed Chapter 1 in preparation for playing Chapter 2, I found myself just Guarding with them over and over while Kris did most of the work.
And the creativity with the fights is ramped up a whole bunch. This is another Not Being The First Part thing, but now that the player is used to how fights in this game are going to go, the complexity gets to increase to match, and the characterisation of the bosses and even generic enemies can better be expressed in the gameplay. I remember being genuinely shocked at how much was going on with the Ambyu-Lance enemyâs highway bullet pattern, especially when combined with other enemies in the fray.
I very much enjoyed the secret boss. Oh come on, thatâs not a spoiler, everyone knows about Jevil at this point, and you get hinted at it super early on! And itâs way easier to find than Jevil was!
Anyway. My final point is just that I do like the characters in Chapter 2 better- particularly the antagonists. As fun as Lancer is, the sort of annoying whacky child characters are never something Iâm particularly fond is. Even though heâs written really well, it took a lot to sell me on him. As well, as sicknasty as the Kingâs boss fight was, as well as the scenes surrounding it being an excellent summation of the point of the game as a whole, heâs not an especially interesting character.
And while I suppose Queen isnât particularly deep either, everything about her is so unbelievably fun. I was pretty much sold on her immediately, with that regal âohohohoâ laugh followed by just absolutely shitposting for the entire length of the game. Her presence makes so much of this game an utter blast. Her presence reminds me a lot of the characters in Undertale who were mostly just there for one area, Alphys in Hotland and the skeletons in Snowdin, constantly popping in to keep things moving, giving each area its own little arc, and generally be fun and amusing along the way. And since each chapter of Deltarune is a lot longer than one arc of Undertale, itâs for the best that Queen manages to make this much of a good impression about the whole thing.
As Iâve stated, I think most of the reasons why Deltarune Chapter 2 are a simple result of being a Chapter 2 rather than a Chapter 1, rather than being any fault of Chapter 1âs (and the last point is basically personal preference). Both are obviously still excellent, and Iâm happy to wait patiently for the series to continue if it keeps up this level of quality. At the end of the day, like, this game is currently free. And it provides a better and longer experience than a lot of actually paid games Iâve played. Toby Fox has managed to be a big shot after literally releasing one and two sevenths of a game, and it doesnât seem like heâs going to be slowing down anytime soon. Hereâs hoping that the assistance heâs apparently getting for future chapters works out such that it doesnât end up sacrificing quality, but I donât see this happening quite yet. I suppose only time will tell, but Iâm optimistic. Filled with determination, as some would say.
no thatâs cringy cut that one sheesh okay let me out of here im done

BnHA One-Shot Fic Recs (pt1)
Making some fic-rec posts has been on my to-do list for a while and Iâm finally doing it, yay! Currently I have 6 word doc pages full of just BnHA recs. So Iâm splitting them up by length and completion, so first up is (part one of) one-shots! Letâs go!!!
Lets start with some classic Izuku and DadMight!
Pictures, Posters and Tender Beauty by ProPinkist (tumblr: @dazais-guardian-angel ) Rating: G  Category: Gen  ~4,400 words Summary: Izuku has virtually every All Might-themed item out there, and prides himself on all of it, as Toshinori is well aware. However, somehow, the boy still decided that there was something vital missing. This is fluffy and very cute. No one truly appreciates All Might as much as Izuku does, but 1A comes close. All Might deserves all the love, and this fic truly provides!!!
Dear Mr. All Might by QuizzicalCrow (tumblr: @quizzicalcrowâ ) Rating: G  Category: Gen  ~5,000 words Summary: As the #1 hero for decades, All Might has collected a lot of fan mail over the years. Toshinori tracks down a series of letters that only now, years later, does he appreciate for their significance. I always love the thought of All Might looking through his fan mail, even if he canât get to all of it. This was a wonderful glimpse into that AND it was made to be so, so personal and sweet. Go have some heart-healing fluff.
Growing Pains by LordofLies (tumblr: @theangelofchildren ) Rating: G  Category: Gen  ~5,900 words Summary: Izuku finds himself changed by his encounter with the Hero Killer, but changes of a more physical kind are in store for him as he begins to truly accept One for All as his own. Once, he would have been thrilled to look more like All Might, but now those connections are as much a source of anxiety as they are of pride.Or, Izuku wakes up one morning and sees the world through different eyes. Izuku having anxiety and Toshi being there to help him through it and calm him down? Sign me UP. Its also a pretty cool take on how One for All is able to change things about itâs holder. Could this happen in cannon? Who knows.... Regardless, it was a great read!
Iâll Carry You Home by Renesvetta Rating: G  Category: Gen  ~2,700 words Summary: While training with All Might, it wasnât uncommon for Izuku to be so exhausted at the end of the day that he unwittingly fell asleep without regard for where he was. It consequently became part of All Mightâs routine to help his young protĂ©gĂ© home. During that time, Izuku may have let loose more than one sleepy confession towards his mentor. Yes, it is as adorable as it sounds. Its tagged with âself indulgent Dad Might fluffâ which is both accurate and appreciated. In other words: Superb you funky little writer!
Simple Gifts by QuizzicalCrow Rating: G  Category: Gen  ~6,700 words Summary: One year ago, Izuku received the greatest gift he could ever imagine. Now heâs determined to return the favor for the one responsible for it all with a gift of his own. First off, I love the idea of Izuku and Toshi quietly celebrating the anniversary of passing on OfA from All Might to Izuku. Even just taking the day to hang out with each other. Itâs a really precious idea. But thereâs not just fluff! Izuku finds himself in a fight, again. (cool villain quirk, too!) I love all of the small details that are in this fic (and in Crowâs other works, too!) anyway its exciting AND very heartwarming, so go read it!!!
Affectionate by Sevi007 (tumblr: @sevi007 ) Rating: G  Category: Gen  ~2,600 words Summary: Toshinori starts to show affection very easily around his students. The reactions he gets for that are not quite the ones he had anticipated - well, not all of them, at least. Toshi is LOVED, APPRECIATED, and 1A feels like HOME. how many times can i say âcuteâ and âheartwarmingâ on this post?? bc these are some amazing writers, whom I adore, and their writing makes my heart WARM. AND. FUZZY. i mean, even just the first few paragraphs of this one just, really sets the scene of what i like to believe the 1A dorm is (on a good day, lol). its a really nice read, so go treat yoâ self by reading it.
paint me in trust by dinomight Rating: G  Category: Gen  ~6,400 words Summary: The first mark Izuku gets is a slight brush of green across his temple. Itâs the soft touch of a mother holding her son for the first time. Inko has one to match, the same shade of green staining the tips of her fingers. Hers is more noticeable; Izukuâs tends to blend into his hairline. He loves it anyways. He has to. Itâs the only soulmate mark he has. (Or: how Izuku goes from just green to a rainbow, UA-style.) Ok, so this fic sort of plays off the idea of soulmates, and does not fit in with soulmates in the usual form of the trope. First off its completely platonic. Its categorized as Gen and sticks to that. Also it doesnât seem to be as obligatory and permanent as you would think it would be. It seems to be more of the universe telling you who has the possibility of being important in your life. I really really loved this, it was so adorable and gives you that sweet, sweet Izuku angst, before healing your heart with the power of friendship and found family!!!
The Die Has Been Cast by ChiwiTheKiwi (tumblr: @chiwithekiwiâ ) Rating: G  Category: Gen  ~5,400 words Summary: âThereâs something about that kid you arenât telling me, isnât there?âWhen no answer meets him, Shouta tries again.âYou know something about Midoriyaâs quirk that you havenât shared with me. Is that right?â(Or: A canon "What If" surrounding the latest manga events and focusing on Aizawa finally making a connection.) First off, this fic has spoilers for the manga, so dont read unless youâre past chp212! I loooooooove OfA reveal fics, especially when itâs Aizawa that finds out. He deserves to know!!! its kind of important!!!! This fic chooses a great moment to work off of, and does a great job with Aizawaâs character. I really enjoyed it and couldnât keep myself from going back and reading it just now LOL
These last two are actually two-shots, but it makes it an even 10! also Izuku and dadmight, so we can continue the theme here...
Some Unspoken Thing by LittleKy Rating: G  Category: Gen  ~7,900 words (2chps) Green, Toshinori has always thought, is the color of life anew.(Or: It's time for Yagi Toshinori to finally accept that he has a son, now, in all but blood. It's time for Midoriya Hisashi to accept that as well.) YES ALL MIGHT! ADMIT THAT IZUKU IS YOUR SON! great portrayal of the characters and really hits the nail on the head for DadMight. and Izuku in this story is just the smallest green floof that you wish to give a hug. NEVER MIND ALL MIGHT, YOU TOOK TOO LONG SO IZUKU IS MY SON NOW AND IM NOT GIVING HIM BACK ( no but seriously i want to hug this fic its so cute TTuTT )
LAST BUT NOT LEAST! I See You by BirdAntlers (tumblr: @aarymk )
Rating: G  Category: Gen  ~15,400 words (2chps) Midoriya Izuku is a quirkless child, blind from birth. Yagi Toshinori is the most powerful man in the world, loved by millions. They could not be more different, and yet their loneliness is the same.  (From a pair of AU posts on Tumblr that got way out of hand; I wanted to put it here because it turned into more of a fic than a "what-if." Basically a vessel for me to vomit as much Dadmight as I can.) Hey, you! Yeah! You! Do you want to cry? Do you want to start sobbing in a public space?? Do you just want to be destroyed with words and be left there kneeling at the feet of a writer who has torn out your heart and stomped on it before they gently wipe the tears from your face? Yeah?? y oU Wan NA D IE??? READ THIS AND GET REKT. youâll thank me later
(under the cut is just me rambling, i kept all the important stuff up here, ur welcome)
Now that the actual recs are over I can rant here- look i really tried to slim my recs down, but i have almost 300 bnha fics bookmarked, some of them are âto readâ or theyre in progress, etc but i managed to get this list sorta slimmed down? a little?(to only 58!!!) but as i was gathering this post together it felt like i dont have very many Dadmight recs on that list??? but i havent rechecked all the other fics i was just going through the oneshots. i... kinda read a lot more fics with AIzawa in it instead. it be that way. DadMight content is SO GOOD. but my fav is aizawa im sorryyyyy anyway i have another SEVENteeN oneshots to put in rec posts and that does NOT include the mulitchapter and friikin series and stuff... and like i said this is aaaaaaallllllllllllllll BnHA. batfam fic posts will come after, and then star wars, and then maybe star trek? weâll see. i have a very specific taste in ST fics and that is Tarsus IV whump. which. i have not read in a while. when they say âthat trope came from STâ for sooooooo many tropes, you WISH other fandoms had tarsus as a trope, holy crap it is TOP TIER angst fodder. if you love to write/read whump, angst, and h/c i would HIGHLY recommend that you take a bit of time and explore the content and stories there. heck maybe i will make a ficrec post for just tarsus angst. ok.
my INTENTION is to edit these posts later with little links to the other fic rec lists so that itll be easier to find. but., its me, so itll either happen in painful detail or not at all
asdjkdgh its 2:30am and i need to sleep and not be rambling incoherently again I WILL SAVE THIS AS A DRAFT.Â

Ok I read the Alanna series a while back and was a little bit put off by the very minor transphobia and white savior arc but still enjoyed the characters so Iâm going to go try the Protector of the Small quartet which I have but havenât read yet b/c of that post comparing the protagonist with Kaladin. See it for myself.
sorry this got super long lmao but i have History with these books
white savior arc was annoyyyinnnng like iâll throw up a âsure it was written in the 80sâ so you couldnât move without hitting a white protag humanizing (in a patronizing way) an analogue for muslim people but sometimes.....that book was so messy it completely missed nuance in some places. alanna was like damn ur culture is so misogynistic you shouldnât wear a veil as if she didnt ALSO come from an incredibly misogynistic culture and that was the point of the entire series. VERY white feminist. ngl im blanking on the transphobia but i absolutely believe it exists.Â
protector of the small is much better in part because it was written later and tamora pierce gets more and more progressive with time and partly cause the characters feel newer and less bogged down by fantasy tradition. song of the lioness was like....ok so miss faerie queen britomart cause thatâs what we used to think when we think about female warriors but we are trying to make a point about womenâs worth not being tied to chastity and it succeeded in that....but protector of the small keladry feels more real and more solid and honestly she was one of my favorite characters to look up to growing up. also thereâs a little dog. the only thing im :/// about is that they introduce this country thats basically japan and the way the characters interact with that culture is a little....steeped in yikes orientalism.Â
so this isnât an excuse but i read alanna with the same lens as like....lotr where i can point at something like âok thats racistâ but 1) being a kid when i read it and 2) not being used to woke fantasy in general meant i ignored enough to still fully enjoy the series. also tamora pierce has taken to tumblr and twitter in the years since and just....pointed out where representation could have gone if she had committed back in the 80s and 90s. i think yall know how i feel about twitter confirmations, but sheâs said things about alanna probably identifying as gender fluid or nonbinary if she had the word for it and keladry being aro and i never read circle of magic but im pretty sure there are lesbians there as well as in protector of the small. lesbian lalasa rights. i think the first time i ever read a trans character was in her beka cooper series, and im not sure if that was good rep on account of being 13 but it was well intentioned and showed the main character like....actively switching pronouns as per the characterâs wishes. not perfect by a long shot, but honestly? i do really think it was one of the more progressive fantasy takes for the 80s.
basically i think specifically protector of the small is worth the read, but youâll still need that grain of salt.Â
#just drank two cups of coffee and used half my lunch break to Think About Her (keladry)#i really liked the tricksters books too but also. again with the white savior and poc culture thats just ripped from a real one#asks#song of the lioness#protector of the small#Anonymous

The Wicked Powers Theories
The Wicked Powers has recently been getting me excited WAY too much - which says a lot about how weird I am since Cassie hasnât even started on it yet (LOL).
aND, so, I kind of thought itâd be nice to jot down some predictions and theories on how the series might go and maybe some thoughts on THE SHIPS (that really do be the real TEA).
So.Here we go.And do let me know about any thoughts you have on this topic as well - I read anything about TWP like a crazed creature these days istg.
1)The POV has already been envisioned to be from Ty, Dru and Kit. I absolutely love this settlement since they are all very intriguing characters. Ty is an interesting person and his actions are always unpredictable, so we might enjoy this one. And,I believe he is at The Scholomance while the story progresses, followed by Livvy (Ghost Livvy, I mean).Itâs still unclear what Livvyâs situation is, so I canât wait to know more about that - itâs bound to be something unexpected. And, as for Dru, itâs kinda obvious. We all know that WE HAVE A LOVE TRIANGLE COMING UP. But, other than that, we also know she attends The Academy and finally starts to makes some friends and even has that really close Italian (..or was it Spanish???) Shadowhunter friend whoâs her age and Cassie also revealed that the two are really tight indeed. And I will be honing in on the Love Triangle soon - I told you Iâll be trying to spill whatever tea Iâm guessing at. And, as for the last character WE HAVE KIT! OMFG YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE OLDER BROTHER KIT.LIKE GOSH DARN IT HE IS SO ADORABLE AND MINA IS SO EFFING CUTE I CANâT EVEN-             AND KITâS TRAINING WITH JEM AND HE IS GOING TO BE A WELL-TRAINED SHADOWHUNTER IN TWP, SO YAYYYY!! And, I absolutely CANNOT wait for MinaXKit interactions, they are the cutest siblings ever and I absolutely know that Mina grows up to be sarcastic. I canât wait for the possible sarcastic arguments between Kit and 4-year old Mina. YOU THINK I FORGOT ABOUT KITxTY? NOPE.THE REAL SHETâS COMING UP.
2)Now,we know that the storyline is going to have something to do with that Faerie Heirloom that was from the Rosales Family. And, Cassie also said it was going to be kind of an Arthurian Legend-ish story. If you donât know the Arthurian Legend, I suggest you read on it. Iâm not sure if Cassie meant the characters and LOVE Aspect of it or the LEGEND aspect of it as in the stuff about Excalibur and all. But, for now weâll view it in both and examine it, shall we?
King Arthur's reign ends after his wife and best knight have an affair.
This is the drama in the legend. But, there are no relationships with the MCs yet. So idk. Iâm clueless. Like, maybe Dru has a relationship?? Okay Iâm clutching at practically nothingness so donât judge me. :/
So,itâs obviously something to do with the LEGEND.
I am afraid I cannot say too much about it, since I have never read too deeply about it. But, hereâs some of the basics:
-He managed to pull out Excalibur from the rock it was stuck in.
-He wielded Excalibur for the people and not for his own self-interest.
-He gets help from a wizard named Merlin.
-The peeps go on a quest.
And I have this reference from a website..Iâll hit u with the link as well, if youâd like to read more on it like I did
Arthurian legend, the body of stories and medieval romances, known as the matter of Britain, centring on the legendary king Arthur. Medieval writers, especially the French, variously treated stories of Arthurâs birth, the adventures of his knights, and the adulterous love between his knight Sir Lancelot and his queen, Guinevere. This last situation and the quest for the Holy Grail (the vessel used by Christ at the Last Supper and given to Joseph of Arimathea) brought about the dissolution of the knightly fellowship, the death of Arthur, and the destruction of his kingdom.
(Iâve linked it with the text above.)
So,now I thought this was interesting- the destruction part. After all, itâs something Iâm expecting about the Shadowhunters. Will the Clave maybe be destroyed? Or maybe Faerie will be destroyed? So,there were three things that brought on this uh Destruction.FIRST, his wife and his best buddy were going behind his back and doing them lovey-dovey stuff. And they all go on some quest to retrieve something important to them. So, this sounds like something plausible to be the plot of TWP. Maybe the Heirloomâs missing? And who goes on the quest though? Maybe they venture through Faerie? BLAH MY HEAD HURTS SOME THINGS ARE BETTER TO BE SURPRISED WITH ;)
-----I kinda scrolled back up while writing about Janus down there and remembered CLARY MIGHT BE TAKEN HOSTAGE LIKE YESS AND THEY GO FIND HER MAYBE?
3)We will defo see Christina, Mark and Kieran at some point- no worries, Emma and Julian too. Happy Couples! XD
4)So,then we can look forward to Dru and Jaimeâs interactions. I am absolutely excited for this the most, as a shipper of the two. If you remember, we saw Jaime ignoring her for a while back there at the end of QOAAD and then he says âSee ya at the Academy soon igâ. I really do hope they meet and hang out as friends, at least. I am excited to see what kind of trope itâs gonna be tho. Like, do they ignore each other and remain awkward until they start the adventure stuff in the book where they eventually have to talk to each other after years or smth. Or, maybe theyâre really good friends rn. But, what Iâll warn yâall shippers is that they might not end up together, and could wind up as brother-sister-ish kind of best buddies. Which is equally cute a relationship imo. Itâs a really sweet thing to be, really. I lowkey hope Cassie spins something beautiful for their relationship like a sibling-like best friends kind of thing. But, I feel like they might have feelings for each other in secret. Or maybe they date. Or maybe they suppress their secret-feelings for the sake of friendship later on in the book and end up having that really sweet friendship I was talking about. There are SO many options and that is precisely why I am so freaking excited.
5)JAIME ROCIO ROSALES.    Like, I have this gut feeling that he might end up being my fave male protagonist character in TSC. Heâs got it ALL. Like, the sense of humour, the looks, the bubbly yet brooding personality, the quirks and OFC THE FRICKING NAME ITSELF IS CUTE AF LIKE BRUH I CANNOT WAIT TO READ ABOUT HIM.I have so much to say about Jaime but Iâd rather we let ourselves simply wait for the crumbs Cassie might give us or maybe reread all his parts in TDA like I do everyday or just wait for the book to come out rather than simp for someone we know nothing about yet....
6)Ash Morgenstern.     Heâs a cute lil bean.    That was random and untrue lmao. Heâs not a âlil beanâ. Heâs totally badass with dem wings and all, but we know heâs soft inside for Janus and ofc Dru, I believe. I find him the most intriguing character, honestly. I would love to know what goes through his head. Heâs actually, like, the one character in TSC that I donât have all figured out. He gon surprise us all for sure tho. He is awesome. Thatâs all I have to say for now. And he looks up to Janus which is SO GODDAMN SWEET AHHHH. And THE WINGS I CANNOT WAIT TO READ MORE ABOUT THE WINGS IT SOUNDED SO BADASS ISTG I LITERALLY CANNOT WAIT GOSH DARN IT. But he really do be a cute lil bean lowkey tho.
7)Kit and Ty LOL. I have no words really. But lemme tell you how it might go. There is definitely going to be some kind of reunion. AND THEN THATâS WHERE IT GETS CUTE. They could either be awkward and we know what tension that gets us-perhaps some whisperings of My Watson...(? ;) and maybe they go all sad and brooding with dem looks later OR, they could be the sweetie-pies they were before and be happy and all HIII BUDDDYYYY MISSED YAAA LESS GO BE DETECTIVES YAY BURN IT UP MAH BUDDY!! Either way itâs going to be cute af and we know it . TRUST IN CASSIE YâALL.I trust Cassie to let this ship sail the seven seas and seven more like it deserves.
8)Ash and Dru So, Ash has a strange lil fixation on Dru and I believe he even thought she was âprettyâ or something. It was definitely a good adjective, but I think he said âprettyâ. idk but we know he likes her. and I can imagine a nice relationship. I can picture them with her hair flying in the wind and they meet for the first time or smth. IHNI WHAT IM SAYING. But, there will be DRAMA. They are going to be real cute with each other YOU CAN BET ON THAT.And, by cute I do not necessarily mean âOh, you have the loveliest eyesâ or some shet like that. I have a feeling itâs going to be a case of âWell, thatâs not weird or anything YOU WEIRDO - NO U - NO U - NO Uâ However this relationship is going to go, I know that itâll be a sweet one. And, for all you shippers of these two, I have no assurances that HE IS THE ONE or anything but he is definitely a candidate. Jaime is going to be some competition I can tell. So, idk. It depends on the Jaime x Dru ship to decide things for Ash x Dru ship imo, since it might be a no-brainer if the two have feelings for each other- I mean,Jaime is an actually perfect love interest in TSC, while Ash is strong potential Best-Friend material, so itâs ONLY if Jaime and Dru donât like each other that way that Ash could make it as a love interest. So, if yâall wanna find out whatâs in it for you guys, ask Cassie maybe about how the Jaime x Dru ship might go, the next time u wanna ask her ;)
9)Tavvy and maybe the kid Helen and Aline might have had We were getting hints of another baby, so HERE WE GO.Tavvy might have a playmate. :D. YAYYYYYYYYYY
10)Janus Iâm honestly worried about him. He is a worrisome character. I hate empathising with the antagonist, personally. AAAAHHHH . I hope we see some character development in him. I really donât want to see him as an antagonist in the story. Heâs sweet and feels cheated, but he should realise that it ainât Jaceâs fault but SEBASTIANâS fault. I would like for him to make amends with Jace :( And, also, he might get the story started in TWP tho idk. But, seriously tho, when he went home in that short story and Ash asked, âI thought you were gone forever?â or something of that sort and he shook his head sadly and Ash went soft for him. Like, that fricking broke my heart. I love this relationship tho. And, i hope Clary and him can be good friends. But, I feel like he might end up dying to save her or smth and make us all cry . T_T
11)WHAT TF IS GOING ON WITH THE SHADOWHUNTER POLITICS RN THO?HOW AND WHERE ARE THEY ALL SURVIVING TOGETHER WHAT IS THEIR SYSTEM AND STUFF THIS IS NOT A POINT WITH POTENTIAL THEORIES COZ HONESTLY I WANT TO BE SURPRISED BUT I THINK THEY MIGHT ALL JUST BE IN HIDING AND THEN IN TWP THEY MIGHT HAVE TO COME OUT FOR A QUEST OR SMTH AND WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE SHADOWHUNTERS AT THE CLIMAX OF THIS WHOLE SERIES??? IT IS THE END OF TSC SO IM SCARED AND KINDA SAD TOO :(((((((
12)Thule We might learn more about the Thule world and maybe they restore it or maybe the Quest is in Thule. idk. we donât know much, but Thule will most probably be explored a lot. Cassie wouldnât have opened up Thule for no reason.
13)Zara and Emma Showdown? Befriend e/o ? Whatâs in store for these two? If itâs a showdown we get to see CORTANA YAY I AM OBSESSED WITH CORTANA NOW BECAUSE OF CORDELIA AND HER OBSESSION GOSH DARN IT WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME
14)BIG WAR I see a huge war coming I just know it. Itâs a climax so there MUST be a big war and so I cannot wait! Feel like thereâs gonna be some deaths as well. Lowkey feel like Jia might die. I can feel it. :(
15)The best-friend shadowhunter of Dru is a nice thing to look forward to! I canât wait to read about the two! And I love the fact that Dru is finally exposed to new people. And, for anyone whoâs confused as to how she goes to the Academy, in QOAAD she only said sheâll have some maturity done AFTER some years . Those years are over and she at the Academy now hecc yeah I BELIEVE THE BFF IS CALLED THAI AND SHEâS FROM THE SPANISH INSTITUTE CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG???
16)Magnus Bane He is literally everywhere. He gon be here too. No worries for all the Magnus Bane stans. Heâll make it here without a doubt! Good for you :). and the entire community of shadowhunters they literally always need him 17)THE MAIN MAIN PLOT THE SHADOWHUNTERS SHOWDOWN IS OBVIOUSLY GOING TO ALSO BE RELATED TO THE PRINCES OF HELL COMING TOGETHER AND I AM TOO SCARED TO LOOK TOO INTO IT BUT WE KNOW SHIZ COMING GNJODIFPEDWEFHUGBJ VM
18)THIS IS KINDA RANDOM BUT I CANâT WAIT FOR THE SELF-ESTEEM GROWTH IN DRU LIKE PLEASE SHE QUEEN MWAH

Okay so now that iâm done crying about shadow and bone to my friends i want to make a controversial statement. Donât bite my head off for my opinion bc 1. idc i said what i said and 2. it aint that serious these are fictional characters moving on though. I donât think the show is bad AT ALL i really enjoyed it and seeing the inclusion of leigh and her books was so fucking cute but i will say i think combining both series into one did a huge disservice to the character development of most, if not ever, character. and iâll explain why so (obviously) sab spoilers ahead. this also obnoxiously long so if you dont read it thats fine <3 lmao
I know going into it everyone, including leigh pretty much, was saying not to expect it to be like the books. That it was going stray away and be more like a fanfiction than the original works. Which was true, but only for the six of crows characters. The show leaned heavily and relied heavily on the plot of shadow and bone. Which, of course, makes sense but because of the inclusion of a heavy heavy re-worked six of crows plot that didnt fit the plot of shadow and bone at all it left them feeling incredibly displaced. Like on shadow and bones part every single major and sometimes even the minor plot points were followed to the number, but on the six of crows front the only thing closely followed was the nina and matthias backstory. I wont talk about every single character because i anticipate this to already be long, but the ones i noticed the most were done a disservice.
For instance Alina. Despite shadow and bone being followed so closely you dont really get to see the natural progression of alinaâs character the way i was hoping we would. And thatâs definitely because of the time restraints. They had to find a way to somehow balance the screen time for both separate plots so that they could hold the audiences attention for both. Like when nina and matthias plot wasnt on the screen for i think 2 episodes i almost forgot about them and what they were up to so i understand why they timing had to be so split, especially when you only have 8 hours to cover the characters of 2 over 300 page long books yknow? But that means important moments alina had to herself in the books were completely cut, and so a lot of that growth we got went with it. The the biggest thing i was disappointed to see go was the defeat she felt when she was first captured and collared by the darkling. She was feeling absolutely helpless, mal was in their hold, she had no power to do anything but sit there and let him use her. All the training she did felt pointless to her and she really was at the point of giving up. She went quiet, wouldnt speak, was basically a zombie until that moment in the fold when she saw innocent people suffering when she knew she could stop. And she found a way to break free. There were other moments like this in the book, like moments at the little palace where shelt herself getting further and further from mal and feeling like an outside on her own all over again. They tried to show it in the show but without the time to develop her life on her own at the little palace it definitely fell short.
Speaking of mal: THANK YOU WRITERS FOR FIXING HIS WHINY ASS. And while he was annoyingly whiny in the books, he is not a boring character. Not to me at least, honestly he never was. While i do appreciate them not making him so whiny, I would have appreciated seeing that same dissonance realizing alina was grisha brought about in the books. Its just like alina said, grisha were people they scoffed at and talked about in a joking way. Their lives felt miles and miles away from their own, and then to learn that she had been one the entire time. I know i know, it has nothing to do with, and alina didnt know either. BUT THAT IS STILL HIS BEST FRIEND. And obviously girl heâs in love with even if he wasnt aware of it at the time. it made him question everything he thought about grisha, and more importantly brought both of their biggest fears to light: being torn apart. In the book he doesnt deal with this well at ALL and while leigh bardugo does a great job throughout the series showing him growing to me he never got where he should have been, and the show did place him there but i think they do so prematurely. I definitely wanted him to be as understanding as he was, to take notice of how much healthier and stronger she looks since sheâs not withholding her power anymore, but i did still want the tension of him wondering what it means for them, how their lives would change, because just based on laws alone she is a grisha and would typically never be someone he would have the chance to befriend but neither of them would be okay with that.
AND ON THE TOPIC OF MALINA. THEY ARE NOT A BORING SHIP. I think the only person other who would work for alina is nikolai (dont fight me on this im right), and that is who i wanted her to end up with. However, I understand why Mal was the choice. Alina has always been someone who just wanted to belong, to fit in somewhere, AND THAT IS OKAY. ITâS NOT A CRIME TO WANT TO BE ORDINARY. I know shes the main character, and has the prophecy of being the ~chosen one~ but that doesnt mean she suddenly has to alter change and rearrange herself entirely. she never wanted to be a saint, and even by the end of the series she still doesnt. Choosing to let the world believed she died so she could live a quiet life. tHATâS ALL SHEâS EVER WANTED. And Mal is the perfect person to give her that. People who claim she gave up her life for mal, to me, didnât understand her character. She bounced around from needing mal by her side, and when she couldnt have him there she still sought acceptance in the only other person willing to give it to her, i.e. the darkling. and then when she couldnt have it from him sheâs forced to find it in herself and while she learns she doesnt need him or mal she doesnt need anyone, she still chooses mal bc she wants to be with him. she doesnt feel obligated and even later on in the books makes plenty stands on her own without him but she loves him and they honestly make perfect sense. a softer ship doesnt make it a boring one js.
NOW THE SIX OF CROWS GANG. I hate to say it, i do but they felt reduced to a form comedic relief. they had their serious moments ofc but for the most part whenever they popped up on the screen i knew a joke or gag was soon to follow. i will say kit as jesper? best decision that could have possibly been made he fucking did what he had to DO. Kazâs development for me felt really really rushed and forced. Like he was saying things to inej he wouldnt have said so quickly and especially not while he wasnt under stress??? it honestly felt like fan service??? which im not mad at because again i dont think the show was bad at all the actors brought really great life to the crows, but it just makes me sad to see all that development and build up go out the window. i think if they were that set on combining the crows story with the shadow and bone story it would have been so much nicer to get a sort of prequel on the crows. like they should have given them the same treatment they gave nina and matthias. so that we could see their backstories as explained in the book happening in real time like how they all came to ketterdam. i know theres no point in wishing that now since whats done is done and again I DONT THINK ITS BAD. Im just sad about all the character development and strong subtle points lost because leigh bardugo always does such a great job in dropping subtle hints and always bringing them back in the end, and that was sadly lost. STILL A GOOD SHOW STILL LOVE THE BABIES. STILL PRAYING FOR A SEASON TWO.
EDIT: IT ALSO MADE ME SAD TO SEE THEM LOSE SO MANY TIMES??? ESPECIALLY AFTER SOC WHERE THEY ALWAYS MANAGED TO WIN?? Like ofc it made perfect sense for them to be unable to capture the damn sun summoner !!! but kaz and all of the crows are meant to be the best of the best when it comes to criminals top tier and they were bested by a ball of light and a jog???? and them going home basically empty handed was kinda :// like i got it but also where did alina get that necklace lmao so yeah once again still great still love it questions had to be askedÂ

unanswered asks~
this post is solely focused on asks [that are not requests/reacts]  i havenât been able to answer lately due to me being busy working on requests or just my personal life in general. if you know you sent me an  ask, my reply to you will be under the cut! i didnât want to leave anyoneâs ask unanswered and if you donât see yours under the cut, please resend them! iâd love to see what you have to say to me. thank you guys for continuing to  support me. i love you guys very much! <3Â
i havent been very active during november so if you know you sent an ask to me during this month and never received a reply, it is more than likely down here! im so sorry about the wait, ive been insanely busy.
[ THERE IS ABUSE MENTIONED DOWN BELOW! PLEASE READ WITH CAUTION! ]
1. are asks still open for prompts?
yes! it is. :) it is open till further notice! <3
2. Not a request, just wanted your thoughts. Ok, imagine a soulmate au where when the SoSu finds Kellogg and they find out theyâre soulmates at fort hagen. My friends say Iâm fucked up for playing around with the idea but I think with a certain backstory it could work. Maybe if SoSuâs spouse was abusive it wouldnât be bad. But also Kellogg was just doing a job and heâs not actually that bad of a person given his story. I just think it could be an interesting idea. What do you think?
- i think its a really good and interesting idea, as much as i dislike kellogg on my end! i dont find a lot of sosu/kellogg fics so i think its pretty amazing you want to write a story based on an soulmate au trope and if you do end up posting it, link it to me! i will be more than glad to read it. personally, i believe kellogg is really traumatized and broken from his past and doesnt know how to express nor heal from it. instead he allows his bitterness to seep through his actions which is probably why he does it with no care and little to no signs of sympathy. so, i dont personally believe he was always an asshole and does have a soft side to him like everyone else. of course, this does not excuse his actions but it does create character in some way shape or form and i think its great to work around and has the potential to form a really detailed and well thought plot. i think soles spouse also being abusive can also aid in the progression of the story. good luck with it and please do share it with us when you decide to do it! im very excited to see you work with this.
2. do you write for longfellow?
- sadly, not at the moment. i haven't been able to play the far harbor dlc to its full potential and i haven't recruited old longfellow as much as i should have. maybe when i do come around to finishing it, i will add old longfellow to the list!
3. Nuooo! No more sad man Danse! Â He needs some happiness too! Maybe after BB he developed some comradeship with a platoon of minutemen he could actually laugh and have a drink with. Find a new purpose in aiding and protecting fellow minutemen and their communities and families. Only people I can realistically see him being buddy-buddy with is either Struges, Preston or if youâre lucky the ex-BOS scribe that can be your armor merchant at your settlement. Dude NEEDS an emotional support system!
- UGH, you are so right! danse deserves nothing but happiness post blind betrayal!! i do strongly believe hes recruited into the minutemen a little later after the events and is immediately accepted into the faction as family, regardless of his past actions. i like to think that he gets along with almost everyone and humbles down as an individual, eventually letting go the ideals of the BoS. the minutemen is truly his first step into another chapter of his life.
4. I hate youđnah Iâm totally kiddingđ I gotta reeeeeally try to find anything subjectively bad to say to you honestlyđ€. Youâre friendliness comes off naturally like youâre not trying too hard to cater to anyone. You come off as genuine enough to just enjoy the fandom and the interactions you have with fans is very refreshing and invitingđ„°. Itâs always a pleasure to have some fun banter about a video game series we all love among each other as fans.đ
- THIS GENUINELY MADE ME SMILE!! im glad i dont come off as too rude of unfriendly to others and its reassuring to hear that! i try to be as nice as i can to everyone and im always happy to interact with anyone in the fandom so dont afraid to shoot me an ask or message. thank you for your message anon and please have an amazing day! i appreciate you! <3
5. your writing is amazing and super comforting and I love the work you do and you and you're wonderful đđđ
- youre more wonderful and amazing! thank you for supporting my writing and continuing to read my works! im glad i can provide you guys with content that is comforting and i hope i continue to do so. <3 please have a wonderful day, anon and i appreciate you so much! <3
6. Iâm actually a little jealous of youđ. You seem to have so much going on in your personal life yet still have time to have a little fun in the fallout fandom. Youâre 19 now right? Ugh and yet youâre doing more in life than what I was doing at that ageđ. Itâs rather inspiring really, thoâ Iâm a little envious I still wish you the best in all your future endeavors. Good luck and take care!â€ïž
- donât be jealous, please. everyone moves at their own pace and thats perfectly fine! take your time and you will get where you want to be in no time. im 18 and im still trying to figure out my life day by day and lets be honest.. i wing it 99% of the time, LOL. im more than certain you will achieve a lot in your lifetime and i will be wishing you nothing but happiness and success! please take care and donât be hard on yourself! good luck. <3
