Summary:

Jack is scared of the dark. (or: Lucifer proves that lightbringer is a very literal title. Sam is here for emotional support.)

Sam doesn’t startle awake anymore. He’s pretty sure that’s a side effect of the whole ‘sleeping with an archangel thing.’ There are very few things in the universe that could sneak past Lucifer undetected, and if those things happen to get into Sam’s bedroom, he’s already screwed. He might as well enjoy his ability to actually get some good sleep in the meantime, even if that comes at the cost of Lucifer inevitably sprawling out on top of him in a way that should probably feel like he’s crushing Sam. (Only, the weight of him inside his vessel, that unnatural angel density that Cas has tried and failed to explain, is nice. It’s grounding. Sam’s had few enough things in his life that make him feel safe, and it’s taken him a long time to accept that Lucifer can be one of them.)

He wakes slowly, even with the sound at the edge of his hearing becoming impossible to ignore. He blinks up into the darkness once, twice, then fumbles for his phone. He manages to knock it to the floor. He curses. He’s about to get out of bed before Lucifer makes a funny noise like a cat that doesn’t want to be picked up, and Sam’s phone is suddenly in his hand.

“Thanks,” he says. Lucifer squirms closer and presses his face against Sam’s shoulder. Lucifer seems to take offense at the idea of Sam’s personal space. Sam doesn’t think he’d be able to breathe in that position if he were human. Perks of being an angel. Sam looks at the clock on his phone. 3 AM. Witching hour. The noise that woke him rings out again, and he can tell that it’s coming from the door to his room this time. No one other than family would come knocking this late. He runs down the mental list. Dean doesn’t bother with knocking most of the time, and it’s a little too quick to be Mom or Cas. Which leaves- “Your son is here.”

“Before sunrise, he’s Castiel’s son,” Lucifer mutters. Sam lets out a tired huff of laughter. Jack has recently discovered Disney movies, and Sam has since repeatedly caught Lucifer humming songs about animated lions. (And on one particularly rough night, singing to Sam to comfort him with what he only later realized was Can You Feel the Love Tonight.) The knocking comes a third time, this time accompanied by a small voice.

“Dad?” Despite his protest, Lucifer rolls off of Sam, but then he freezes. He just stares at the door that Jack is on the other side of. Sam’s brain goes straight to old studies of dogs being shocked until they stopped struggling. Sam tells his brain to shut up.

He puts a hand on Lucifer’s shoulder, squeezes once, and then gets up and walks past him to open the door. Jack’s there, looking small and scared and every bit the child they sometimes forget he is when discussing the nuclear bomb of power he has inside him. Sam’s not sure how Jack knew to come to his room when looking for Lucifer, (he’d thought they were keeping things well under wraps, enough to not freak Dean out, at least) but he chalks it up to some kind of latent angel instinct the kid has.

“I woke you up,” Jack says, as though that possibility hadn’t crossed his mind until he was looking at Sam, who was still rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. Jack ducks his head. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s alright,” Sam says. “Come in.” He opens the door wider. Jack peeks inside, still hesitant. When he sees that yes, Lucifer is actually there, he looks a little relieved. “So, what happened?” The lamp on Sam’s beside table flickers to life without anyone touching it to replace the light from the hallway as Sam closes the door. The bulb whines in protest like it’s considering bursting when it does so, and Sam frowns at Lucifer. The archangel does not meet his eyes, trying to watch Jack, and then failing to watch Jack, and finally letting his gaze settle off towards the opposite wall. Jack doesn’t notice, at least. He’s looking back at Sam again.

“Dean doesn’t like being woken up in the middle of the night,” he informs Sam, and Sam nods his most understanding nod, “so I couldn’t go to Cas, because he’s sleeping in Dean’s room.” Sam manages another understanding nod. He won’t say he’s surprised, because he’s not, he is so far from surprised, but this is still information that he wasn’t expecting to receive from his sort-of adopted son at three in the morning. “And I thought...” Jack trails off.

“Why did you want to get Cas?” Jack shifts his feet awkwardly. He’s not meeting Sam’s eyes, but that’s not a product of nerves. He never looks directly at anyone, opting to stare at their shoulder or behind them instead. Dean says it’s unnerving. Sam just files it next to other things, like Jack’s hands flapping when he’s excited or how he’d probably only eat one thing for a month if they let him, and saves the information for later discussion.

“I had a nightmare,” Jack says, quietly, “and my room is very dark.” Sam opens his arms up in invitation. Jack brightens, just a little, and accepts the hug. Sam catches Lucifer’s eyes (he’s looking back at them, expression a mixture of uncertainty and surprise) and tries to convey ‘he’s your son and he’s upset, say something.’ Lucifer makes a face back that roughly translates to ‘I spent most of my life in the Cage or ending the world, I don’t know how to deal with a child.’ He relents at Sam’s puppy-dog eyes.

“Jack. Come here.” Sam can tell he’s trying for warmth. It comes out stilted. Jack wiggles his way out of Sam’s arms anyway and makes his way over to the bed. Lucifer pats the spot in front of him, and though Jack does sit there, neither of them look entirely comfortable. Jack rocks back and forth slightly. Sam comes over as well. It’s not that he thinks Lucifer will do anything intentionally bad, it’s just... There’s a reason Jack’s first instinct was to go looking for Cas and not him. Lucifer’s been routinely terrible at this whole parenting thing. It’s not for lack of trying, but he doesn’t know what he’s doing and next to Cas, who took to this whole situation like a duck to water?

Lucifer might be Jack’s dad and nothing will change that, but Cas is Jack’s dad too and nothing can change that either.

“You’re one of the nephilim. You shouldn’t be scared of the dark.” Jack curls in on himself a little. Sam makes a cutting motion with his hand near his mouth. Lucifer tries to course-correct. “You don’t have to be. You can make your own light.” Jack tilts his head, shoulders still drawn.

“I can?”

“Of course you can, you’re my-” Lucifer’s voice stops before he can finish the sentence like he’s been muted. He recovers quickly. “You’re half angel. It’s easy.”

“Okay,” Jack says, “but how?” Lucifer opens his mouth to answer and then shuts it again, frowning. “...Dad?”

“Give me a minute. It’s been a very long time since I taught anyone how to do this.” He shuts his eyes for a moment. Sam wonders how much of that hesitation is him actually trying to recollect and how much of it is him trying to push down the fact that the last time he did this was probably before he got thrown into the Cage. “Alright, let’s see.” Lucifer reaches forward and takes Jack’s hands in his own. Jack jolts back in surprise, but then he leans forward again, curiosity overriding his shock. Lucifer has him cup his hands like he’s trying to hold water in them. “This is all about intention and will, so focus.” Jack’s brow furrows in concentration.

Nothing happens.

Lucifer sighs, says under his breath, “Michael always was a better teacher than me.”

“I don’t get what I’m supposed to focus on.” Jack breaks his position, shaking his hands out nervously. He puts them back in place when he’s done. Sam would love to help, but it’s been a long time since he had any sort of psychic power and that’s not exactly a time in his life he wants to revisit.

“It’s... How do I explain this to you.” Lucifer rubs at his forehead. “No. I can’t. It’ll be easier this way.” He gestures towards Sam’s lamp, and the light dies. Jack inhales sharply, and Sam steps forward, reaching out in the dark to try and comfort the kid. Only, Sam blinks, and there is light. It’s not coming from his bedside table or even the light above him. It’s coming from Lucifer’s outstretched palm. It’s not a hovering ball of light like the cheap effects of some fantasy movie. Lucifer’s skin glows from the inside out. It grows and dims in a rhythm not unlike a heartbeat, but never once does it waver. Jack stares, transfixed. Sam can’t help but feel the same way. Lucifer glances up at him and preens under the attention. He reaches forward again to take Jack’s hands.

“Does it make more sense now?” Jack nods.

“I think so.” This time, as Jack concentrates, light does begin to flicker between his fingertips. “Is that right?”

“Yes. Keep going.” Jack wiggles, all barely contained excitement, and Sam finds himself smiling. The light Jack produces is not as steady as Lucifer’s, nor as bright, but still, Sam’s room looks like it did before Lucifer turned the lamp back off. “Very good. I told you it was easy.” Jack beams.

“It looks like Sam!” he says. Sam raises an eyebrow. Lucifer just nods.

“It does, doesn’t it?” Sam’s eyebrow creeps up higher.

“What looks like me, exactly?” Jack turns to face him, and Lucifer tilts his head. They’re both grinning, and all of a sudden, the family resemblance is obvious.

“You’re shiny!” Jack says.

“I’m what.”

“We have always been mirrors, Sam. Are you really that surprised that your soul reflects how radiant I once was?” And Sam can’t exactly say that he is, that he’s spent his entire life thinking that he was sullied, not when Jack’s right there. Lucifer smiles like he knows that, and he has so much trouble getting Sam to accept compliments normally that Sam’s sure he’s doing it on purpose. Sam counters. Turnabout is fair play.

“Mirrors only reflect what’s still there, Lucifer.” Lucifer pretends to take his words in stride, but Sam can see the few moments where he’s caught off-guard by that. Jack looks between them, and then he ducks his head and bites his lip like he’s trying to keep an even bigger grin from spreading over his face.

“Thank you,” he says, “for teaching me how to do that.” He rubs his hands together. “I can go back to my room now, I think.” Sam looks at his bed (well, their bed, really. It’s not like Lucifer ever really uses the one in his room.) It’s pretty big.

“You know, when I was a kid and I had nightmares,” Sam says, “Dean used to let me sleep in his bed.” He’s not sure if angels have childhood nightmares or beds to climb into, but from the way Lucifer’s expression goes quiet and sad, Sam thinks he might have stirred up some kind of memory. “So, I guess, if you wanted to stay-”

“Can I?” It all but leaps out of Jack. He repeats himself a second later, softer, glancing over at Lucifer. “Can I?” Lucifer blinks, shakes whatever he was thinking of off, and nods.

“If it’ll help.”

Which is how Sam learns that Jack? Is even worse about personal space than Lucifer.

Still, even if he spends the rest of the night squished between the archangel he loves more than he’s ready to admit and his son who’s being collectively raised by the village of Winchester, it’s worth it. Sam’s happy. He’s really, truly happy.

at this point in my (withdrawn) online presence, I'll unfollow for literally anything. You might be spitting facts and I 110% agree with you, but I'm still gonna unfollow. I can't bear the online fighting anymore, the endless "discourse" that goes nowhere and only sucks out everyone's life. It just leaves me so empty and drained, and in a space where I don't have any spirit left in me to spend time with the people i love and care about--just holing up in my room, disengaging from reality and shutting down. I just feel at this point in my life/online presence that we only have so many years to spend on Earth, especially while we navigate worse and worse global crises and the potential collapse of systems we thought couldn't ever fail. I don't want my life to be a small unremarkable smear of loneliness, fear and hatred.

btw now that i can get to it (was busy and had someone over) i can babble a little abt zzz and give my thoughts so far on it if anyone is still wondering whether they should try it or not

first thing i have to say is, to me it feels like a cozy casual kinda game. and i love it. i think thats the part i saw some ppl complain abt

it reminds me a lot of P5 w the overall vibes etc (i played on first release years ago but not the additional stuff afterwards so idk if there were changes to the plot or anything with whatever royal is about) and it was a comfort game for me back then so yea. this might add a lot to why zzz feels like such a comfort game to me

the siblings are not active, playable characters in combat since theyre the proxy guiding and supporting the playable characters (agents) in the hollows (compare it to domains). outside of the hollows you run around with ur chosen sibling and whoever you picked, the other doesnt disappear or becomes irrelevant. they are a unit, run their video store together, theyre one proxy, supporting each other. i already love how trailblazer is more vocal than traveler but the siblings are active, talking parts in cutscenes and whenever theres dialogue choices, your chosen sibling ACTUALLY SAYS IT. this is smth i wished for a while in gnshn so seeing it in zzz made me super happy. it gives them sm life and gets me into it idk how to say it

anw its not overwhelming like gnshn feels to me. gnshn has sm to explore and sm story and its smth i both enjoy and feel exhausted by. now, if you played persona or are familiar, its easier for me to use for comparison. you get to run around as the chosen sibling in the city but the fighting (w the agents you pull from the gacha) all happens in the hollows (similar to when you enter the metaverse). it runs with a day-night cycle and depending on the time, npcs and quests pop up. you can pass the time if you need a specific time of day for an objective, by doing hollow exploration or simply resting in ur room. theres side stuff you do, like running your store and visiting the arcade and play snake akjscbk

the combat itself reminds me of HI3 and wuwa and feels super smooth and fun to me

it has cutscenes etc but the story parts in between are illustrated and presented in a comic/storyboard kinda way? which fits the whole video/movie aesthetics well. its pretty cool

overall, if you didnt try it out yet bc you think it requires lots of energy and time like gnshn, its nothing like that at all. ofc im not through with everything but so far it feels like a very nice game to play casually, w a big cozy bonus when youre spending the day freely in game. i play only on pc or on console when i wanna lay down but this game even i would play on phone or ipad to chill akjscbk

the characters are also pretty fun and cool looking! like, look at them, so far we got

the most chaotic ragtag group in all of new eridu (they share one braincell and its anby who is in charge of it)

fresh looking heavy industry workers (they have a bear)

classic horror housekeeping service who will poison ur tea ig

motorcycle gang (oggling the glasses guy and boss lady super hard, they will be mine when playable-)

public security (they have an actual catboy in case weve got catboy enjoyers here)

special hollow operation elite squad aka the coolest strongest mfs out there taking care of hollow disasters

ALSO THE NPCS!!! LIKE!!! look at the cook!!! tinmaster running the coffee shop!!! the girl selling gadgets or the bunny person running the arcade!!!

even the regular npcs just roaming the streets. theres lots of cool details and life in every bit, its really cool

i love that the final fight(s) felt like a kid smashing 3 different Lego sets together, real Robot Pirate Island shit

So... Twitter, huh? My spoiler filters there had some leaks, and I saw some discussion out of context that... actually made me kinda scared to finish the show. But then I did, and had fun with it just like the other two seasons, and I remembered that Twitter gets high-strung about things that don't matter so much, and that giving it sway over how much I enjoy things is silly lol.

Yes, I think the last season could've been paced differently so it wasn't 5 episodes of the same Final Boss Fight. Yes, I think the writing switches jarringly between gearing for a young new audience and for a seasoned old one. Yes, I think the 2D flashbacks look and move worse than what fans constantly make for free. Yes, I think the final episode doesn't do nearly as much housekeeping as it should (does the Shatterverse still exist or not??). Yes, I think declaring the show is canon to the games or whatever they said probably wasn't the best idea. And yes, I think Black Rose should've had a shoulder-parrot!Birdie to match the other Amys. All valid critiques! All sensible things to think when you've been around the Sonic bush!

But I swear to god, people on Twitter act like these things spoil the whole package. Where's the nuance? Why does every opinion there become an absolute worth tearing others down for? Is it the character limit? I bet it's the character limit.

There's so much I love about this show that were infeasible for the Sonic brand just 3-4 years ago. Externalizing the characters' facets to explore them in-depth. Said exploration spanning multiple episodes instead of being one-and-done. The sheer amount of genuine Sonadow food (and I don't actively do shipping, so me adding it here should hold a lot of weight). The snappy, playful, yet blistering fight scenes that, dare I say, feel like a successful TV-budget Spider-Verse. It was all so much fun!

But I guess stuff like Green Hill being the gang's "home" is a big deal-breaker?? Like?? I thought that was silly too, but not worth ratio'ing people with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse over? Get well soon, I guess??

Rambling over, shout-out to the entire country of Canada for giving me the most fun I've had with a Sonic show since X! I'm gonna go figure out how to address all this as The End lol

I’ve been busy once again, and i been trying to make this a habit but im usually out and about.

day 17: test day! i was taking it easy that day. i made food for the week that day.

day 18: I started to study a bit. did my assignment. The wifi cut out on the last hour before submission😭 so i used my hotspot

day 19: I was studying for the test the next day, it was hard bc i didnt want to focus. but something was done at least.

day 20: took my other test! i did pretty good on it :D I redid my artist carrd for commissions soon.

day 21: i cleaned my apartment a bit!

day 22: hung out with the boyfriend :3 he brought me some matcha. we went out to eat this new ramen place in town (it also had sushi) and got boba. :3

yes you are absolutely right our childe would definitely rub it in everyone’s face. mainly scaramouche and zhongli. it started off with him going to ask if you wanted to go out with him in liyue, thats when you grabbed him and started cuddling him. childe was… well startled at the least but then go comfortable in his oh so loving god’s arms. you can feel childe’s grip getting stronger but hey, this saves you from having to talk to people and can cuddle with childe! so is it really a problem? anyways childe after that situation would go straight to scaramouche and brag about how he was able to cuddle with you and scaramouche wasnt. i have a feeling his tongue may be electrocuted off. for zhongli, he has to keep a calm facade. especially in-front of childe. after all both of them fighting is unethical.

Thomaaa….. you actually asked him to come but forgot about it. so when he comes over to your quarters he is met by your loving arms. i mean, hes not complaining.if you look at him he is red as a tomato! honestly out of these three thoma has the most normal reaction. (omg im about to fall asleep lol) cooking for you (surprising w usually zhongli does all the cooking. he burns himself thinking of him in your arms. he cries out of pain from his finger and happiness from your kind action haha. the funniest thing is that know one will know. most of the time thoma is working so not many people talk to the housekeeper😗.

Militat Omnis Amans: The Beginnings by edaen - 92k words, fantasy, werewolf!jk, vampire!jm, forbidden love, super slow burn but super worth it, JIKOOK IN THIS IS MY FAVORITE JIKOOK IN ANY FIC EVER EVER EVER, this is the ultimate all or nothing will freeze hell over for the other kind of love, and the way this is written is just so... how do i describe it. like you can just tell the author wanted to be very realistic with their feelings. you’ve seen the word count, this is SLOW burn. like you will legit feel their struggle to just be able to love each other and while it hurts, it’s also SO GLORIOUS. i love this one so much and if you like reading angst with happy ending but like cranked up to 200% then read this. bonus feels if you read the whole series

Until Dawn (series) by edaen - this is the long series where the previous one above is part of. highly rec if you love fantasy and you wanna read about bts being a rag tag group of supernatural beings fighting evil yay. also it makes the above fic more satisfying because you see more of jikook just being tgt and in love (with bonus angst because of course)

7 Signs by NamHyora - 27k words, secret spies au, abo, alpha!jk, omega!jm who is always used as a raven in their operations aka they use jimin and his attractive self to attract people and gather information or acquire targets and all that spy stuff, and his bestie alpha jk is not too happy about it hehe, friends to lovers, iove this one so much i wish it was longer but i think the author is planning to write a sequel!

Drop Like Confetti by annie_vi - 110k words, ceo!jk, age difference, age swap, ahhh i love this fic so much cause jimin smart and mature and has this no bs attitude, and he can keep up with jk despite the age gap and the difference in status/experiences, jk sexy dilf in this one eheh, i love it cause the drama/angst tackles a very real concern for such couples, like there’s no angst just for the sake of having angst, it really makes sense where they’re both coming from, they’re so whipped for eo too so love that for me

Fold it Up Like Origami by annie_vi - 99k words, gamer!jk, model!jm, same author as above and jk is so boyfriend goals in this one and in all this author’s fics in general like wow my standards are so high now i will legit be single forever just reading jikook fics (with no regrets), secret relationship due to their celeb status, well-written as usual, dialogues/banter in this author’s fics are just YES

just a quick one about my preferences: idc about tops/bottoms, i read just about anything but i prefer fantasy and multi-chaptered fics, i love established relationship jikook so hmu with recs anytime, i don’t like reading anything with cheating and mcd, i love fics where jk and jm are just so friggin in love they are just IT for eo, and at the end of the day even if there are elements to the fics i wouldn’t normally read, as long as they’re well-written then i’m all for it

definitely, definitely if mai was raised in a more healthy environment this would not have happened. i think jjk 149 really drove home the point that sexism, conservatism and bigotry against ppl w/o cursed energy kills. i mean really, if the zenin clan wasnt an ass towards toji none of this would have happened. anyway back to mai, if she grew up w/o all that mess of a zenin clan:

1. the father wouldnt attempt to kill both of his children for something as bullshit as not being able to be """"head of the clan"""

2. mai is, at her heart, a soft girl. she grows up in a house full of ppl crazy abt magic stuff and she's just like yeah nah not my stuff. she just wants to live peacefully with her sister doing whatever. i sorta headcanon that mai picked up a sarcastic and mean demeanor because she feels insecure, so she gotta put up a front to seem tough and protect herself. like

hate to agree with naoya here but he's right. mai has a cursed technique, a very badass one at that, but that cant reach its full potential if she's so physically weak and making just one bullet drains almost all of her energy. but anyway back to the point, if she's grown in a different, better environment, i think she wouldnt have to put up a tough demeanor.

i mean look at her here!! she's afraid and she expresses it. no acting tough!!

(also the curse there is so funky! doesnt it remind you of the "等到颈都长埋" ("to wait so long that even one's neck has elongated”) saying?)

if she's allowed to just grow up like this, without all the bullshit pressure and the misogyny and maki leaving the clan w/o taking her, i think she'd grow up to be a sweet girl. maybe a little sarcastic sometimes, but definitely not as bitter. maybe even learn to make better use of her cursed technique so that she can better support her sister - i mean, she definitely would never have a physically strong enough body to fully support her cursed technique bc of heavenly restriction (sort of?) on both her and maki, but she didnt have to make a sword in 1 day - she could make it in like, 8 days so it wouldnt put a heavy strain on her body. and because she made it for her sister she would be able to make/alter it to her sister's liking, maybe even on-field altering to better suit the purpose and whatever enemy maki's fighting. AND if they were put in any kind of dire situation, like being stuck on an island w/ no way to access weapons mai would be able to make some while maki handles all other housekeeping finding food and shelter tasks. mechanics mai!! ENGINEER MAI!!!! the potential is ENDLESS LITERALLY WHAT THE FUCK @ GEGE YOU DIDNT HAVE TO WRITE MAI OUT OF THE STORY LIKE THAT! HIRE ME!! HIRE ME TO WRITE MAI BACK INTO THE STORY YOU HAVE ONE CHANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!

and fandom is. phewww. i try to block ppl as soon as i know that they are not really putting their critical thinking skill into use when consuming the media that i like (which is not "wrong," btw - who knows much their day tasks burn their brain out) AND their opinion annoys me. its like when you go on ao3 and you go "ah this person is just here for the trope, skip; ah this person is just here to write the porn, skip; a-" i know different people read things differently, so as you spend time in fandom, any fandom really, you just sorta learn to ignore those kinds of things. you'll get there!!
