ian mckinley (FD3) is autistic here's why

i orginally wrote this for twitter for autism awareness day but my friend said to post it on tumblr so . throws this to the masses no particular order im kinda just rambling . i have autism myself a lot of this will be relating to My personal exprience being autistic and why Ian sticks out to me and is a character I feel seen by :) -- Ian seems to have low empathy for others. Not that he doesn't care - he very much does and I will get to that too - but rather he struggles to relate to people on an emotional level prefering to use logic instead of emotion. Hell his first line in the movie is he alongside Erin trying to reassure Wendy that she'll be fine on the rollercoaster.

Though unlike Jason, their approach is more logic and reason based. Using facts and logic to communicate their point > saying something like "hey, it's okay to feel scared, but you'll be fine". And like many autistic people including myself who do this it's kinda regarded as him being rude/a smartass by those around him. When his intentions were entirely the opposite and he was actually just trying to be helpful.

Something personally I relate to a lot. I've been told countless times that I "don't need to be a smartass" when just trying to use logic to deflate a problem because, to me, it makes more sense than being emotional about it.

Ian trying to find logic in things is shown again in the scene where Wendy and Kevin come to warn he and Erin about death's design. Ian is completely opposed to the idea that death could possibly be a thinking or feeling entity. Again he isn't trying to be a smartass or be sassy about it, just trying to work out what the fuck Wendy and Kevin are on about because to him? It makes no logical sense.

He's very rooted in his beliefs and even when he choses to humour Wendy and Kevin he still takes a logical approach and tries to make sense of it in a way that makes sense to him. Even coming up with a solution that would seem most logical.

And yet again, he's treated like a bit of an asshole for it. It's not like he grabbed Wendy and shook her and told her to die no he just accepts this. He might have low empathy but he's still understanding.

Ian actually seems to care a lot about people. Especially Erin, who he's closest to in the movie, but this care extends even to Ashley and Ashlyn. Who he very likely wasn't friends with judging by how he and Erin laugh at them when they try to invite Wendy to the tanning salon.

But he cares, still, and has a very strong sense of justice. His interruption at the funeral is a prime example of this. You can see him dwelling on it for a moment before he speaks. He's not speaking up because he wants the attention, he's not trying to cause drama, he's just upset. Because to him, even as people who he wasn't close with, Ashley and Ashlyn's deaths were unfair and the fact that someone is trying to suggest otherwise just set him off.

If he was doing it for attention or to cause drama he would've put up more of a fight when Kevin and Lewis got him to leave. But he doesn't. He's probably pretty aware that what he did was wrong but the need to speak up outweighed that in the moment. Something again that I can relate to heavily. If something is unfair you will know about it. And people with autism often have strong senses of justice.

Ian also has very few people he's close with. Erin being his closest friend possibly even Only. Hence why her death impacted him as much as he did. He may not have been Wendy's best friend or anything but he did trust her and get along with her. So when Erin dies - a death that only occurs because Wendy interrupted his death causing it to skip to Erin - it feels like a betrayal. An injustice against someone he cared deeply about.

And that feeling of betrayal coupled with the fact Erin died so awfully is what drives him to act so irrationally.

His whole thing at the tricentennial was almost like a meltdown or at the very least an all-reason-out-the-window moment and god as someone who's autistic and frequently misunderstood by people / misunderstanding people leading to moments of severe anger and lashing out... i get it man i get you Ian.

Think. Erin died horribly less than 24 hours ago. It's fresh in his mind. He's focused so so heavily on Wendy being there, thinking about how unfair it is. Wondering "Why could Wendy save me but not Erin?". He's acting irrationally, he isn't thinking. Hell he sounds like he's on the verge of crying. And again I get it I GET that. When I feel something wrong has been done to me / someone I love I tend to fixate on that person and place blame onto them and act very irrationally about it.

Yeyeye! I can answer all of them :))))

1. I have a. story for Kai’s arm, it’s got to do with my oc Akako in my AU! It’s around the finale of Season 2, when they’re on the Dark Island. Akako wants to prove to Garmadon that she’s good enough to keep (maybe there’s a conflict or a threat that the Overlord/Garmadon will leave her on the Dark Island while they return to ninjago.) So this time she doesn’t hold back, and neither do the ninja considering she’s been a thorn in their side for some time.

They aren’t exactly aware of her element, and how it works until it’s too late. Any damage she takes she can use it against others, though at the cost of her having to deal with those wounds. This includes elements (if she was struck by Jay she can zap him back ❤️)

Thus, Kai attempts to finish her off once and for all, and stabs her with his sword (im pretty sure their weapons at the time can harness their elements). Akako while decently hurt, uses this as a final opportunity to attack before fleeing (or before going insane who knows (i don’t)). She attempts to absolutely incinerate him but he’s only able to dodge so much and gets burnt really badly on his arm. He takes the gap between season 2 and season 3 (maybe even up until 4) to recover properly. And when she eventually does get her goofy redemption arc he’s the last person to trust her.

As for his gold tooth I’d imagine he got it knocked out around season 5 and got the gold filler before or at the start of season 6 to show off honestly. I think it suits him 🦐

2. Lloyds gi is sleeveless because i thought it’d look decent enough 💀 He’s admittedly a little thinner/lankier than the others though so I might go back to him wearing a tank top or something underneath. He does have gloves that go really high up his arms, so he’s covered up a little bit. Those are just concept sketches I made on a whim however, I’m working on the proper reference as we speak :)

3. There’s somewhat of a connection yes :) Though i need to figure out the plot reason behind it, I do know that they’re based off the tassels of Akako

The season I’m making that those gi appear in is a season based around her, so I thought it’d be neat for their designs to all tie together!

I actually did take a bit of inspiration from Sky: Children of Light, and their cape outfits. There’s a certain cape with tassels coming from them and I thought that’s be cool to incorporate and personalise for each ninja. It’s also a callback to back in 2017/2018 where when I drew them as silly little stickmen I liked to draw their tassels differently! Akako is a reworked oc from back then as well (vomits)

Nya and Jays gloves are more of an aesthetic choice for me, but I do take a lot of inspiration from steven universe and their designs sometimes. With Nya specifically I loved the one fingered gloves that Sardonyx from Steven Universe wear :)

Anywhozles he raises those kids the best he can. Reba would be proud. Then the lamb comes. Kills the bishops, kills nari : (, nari gets indoctrinated : ). Listen. I was over thinking at work again about narilamb. So many fanfics have narinder unsettled by/intimidated by/uninterested in having children and, like, great. Good soup. Kamado Tanjirou

• Mans so gentle and soft, the kisses would feel so good for your lips

• Especially your forehead and lips

• Like he just want you to feel loved and appreciation??

• He wants to show you how much he loves you, knowing that he will disappear and die one day

• He would kiss you everywhere you go when you're with him like none stop

• This dude omg

ok i'm going to talk about this because i Will forget if i don't. reaches for the downfall timeline ramble i have had in the works for like six months now

thinking about it it's pretty clear that botw's cutscene story, at least imo, isn't supposed to be a tragedy, based on the way you get them, and I don't think botw link is ever really portrayed as failing on any particular level. no matter what order you get the memories in, you are aware that link and zelda survive. the memories are physically connected to the places they're in, linking you to the past (haha) in a very tangible way. the cutscenes are not a story by themselves, and they never were meant to be; instead, the story of the present and a century ago are meant to compliment each other. this isnt how a traditional tragic narrative works! at most we'd get an inkling of hope at the very end of the story, or some change directly linked to the protagonists' folly.

i'm saying all of this because I think a lot of people misinterpret botw's memories and the result of them as zelda, link, and/or hyrule at large's fault, that the memories are a tragic narrative and that some...nebulous thing within their control caused them to fail. this is pretty blatantly contradicted by the text, as my friend pointed out to me. the calamity came early, and I believe rhoam is pretty explicit about how they had no idea this would happen and everyone just got overwhelmed. when characters talk about the past, they don't point out problems with pre-calamity hyrule -- more often than not, they idolize it and see its demise as a great loss.

to hammer it in even further!! botw explicitly calls ppl who think link is a failure foolish! muzu and the older zora do kinda blame link for mipha's death and the story really doesn't frame them too charitably.

all that to say. you're allowed to have link blame himself or have some survivors guilt ive said as much before it's fine. boring and cringe imo but ppl can do what they want. it's not a reading that's actually supported by botw itself

you wanna know what is???? yeah it's link taking up the same role as he did 100 years ago and upholding the status quo!!

there is so much evidence for this im not joking. the fact you even get the memories you do is testament to it. they all portray link as this stoic dutiful paragon who died heroically and never faltered and more importantly they all have to do with his job! we don't get memories of things that aren't explicitly tied to link and zelda's roles, period. it's all relegated to side content that we don't get to see play out. half the champions go out of their way to tell you to do your job. random npcs will tell you to go do your job. the master sword assumedly tells zelda to revive link so he can—get this—do his job. and, no matter what he thinks about it, he is forced onto that path. it's why he was revived! it is quite literally his life's purpose! now, you can certainly argue that he's a little happier with how things are, since not everyone knows who he is, but there is still a lot of pressure on him. nothing's really...changed.

you can't blame anyone for why this happens; it's not like the broken system that they depend on has any alternatives that work—and the one that might have got taken over by calamity ganon. it's not like zelda, link, and the champions' suffering could be prevented, the game says. the only thing that can really be changed is how individual characters react to it.

that's the tragedy of breath of the wild. no matter how much you struggle and fight against your own pain, the only thing you can do is accept it, and pass it on to another generation.

gonna ramble about this one day properly but botw link as someone who can't escape his past role >>>>> as someone who "failed"

not gonna lie, he’s often awake late at night. he’s a night owl and doesn’t mind sacrificing his sleep to watch some youtube videos

occasionally, he even goes out late at night, slipping past his parents and brother’s room and softly closing the front door with his headphones covering his ears and his hands stuffed in his pockets

so when you text him at 3am and ask if he can go out with you to the convenience store, he agrees in seconds to meet you at the halfway point between your houses

wastes no time in putting on his sneakers and a hoodie; he wants to get there quickly so that you aren’t left out by yourself

tsukishima knows there’s creeps out there, which is exactly why he jogs to the halfway point and is relieved when he’s the first one there

as soon as he sees you in the distance he fast walks to catch up to you, and slips his hand into yours

he totally brings bluetooth earbuds so that you two can listen to the same music instead of his wired headphones <3 uwu

is always on the lookout for any weirdos, and if he spots someone eyeing you up he shoots them the nastiest glare

eventually wraps his arms around your shoulder while your hand is sitll in his and its that cute little thing where your arms is across your chest holding his hand </3

pays for whatever you get at the store, ignores your complaints and tells you to shut up when you continue to insist on paying

“im trying to be a good boyfriend for once, for the love of god PLEASE shut up”

secretly takes a candid photo of you at some point in the night and sets it as his home screen -- NOT his lock screen, and when you see it he outright denies having taken it

tsukishima: you told me to take a picture of you

you: stop lying i know you’re a closet hopeless romantic 

convinces you to stop at the park and eat the snacks you both got there, music still humming in your ears as the moonlight washes you both in cool tones

tsukishima when he’s alone with you is so soft -- he literally kisses your hand and temple and mutters very softly “love you” 

all in all, tsukishima kei is the perfect night-owl boyfriend to go on snack-runs with 

kageyama tobio.

he’s not a cheesy person but...god you just take his breath away sometimes. not that he’ll ever say that though

you ask to take a break like thirty minutes in because you are LITERALLY dying meanwhile he hasn’t even broken a sweat (”you’re already tired? maybe you should workout more” “shut UP kageyama”)

you both sit on the bench, and you’re lowkey waiting for him to reach for your hand but they’re just folded in his lap as he stares out in the nothingness of night

kageyama can’t take a hint. we know this. he’s incapable of knowing what you want unless you flat out tell him; so you have to be a very honest person

he doesn’t even really initiate skinship, not because he doesn’t want to, but just because it never really crosses his mind

plus he doesn’t feel the need to constantly show affection because he thinks it’s obvious that he likes you

despite this, he is good at spotting weird people, and he’s pretty protective of you, so you’re completely safe with him. trust him, he’ll keep you safe

all in all, have patience and stamina because kags will play volleyball with you until you pass out. also, he loves you 

yamaguchi tadashi.

is in bed by 11pm but doesn’t actually go to sleep until two am because he’s scrolling through tiktok on his phone

sees your text about wanting to go out for a late night walk and maybe go through the little forest near your house and automatically sends a text that says “ill meet you at your window! can you pack some snacks? :)”

he walks all the way to your house, even if it’s more convenient to meet halfway because he wants to protect you! he’s not the strongest nor is he the most intimidating, so all he really has to offer is his presence

despite not being strong nor scary, yams literally has eagle eye. you can’t tell me that he can’t read people in a heartbeat -- he’s extremely perceptive 

also texts you to not bring a jacket because he’s bringing on of his own for you !!! so sweet what the hell

he waits at your front door and when you step out he automatically pushes his volleyball jacket into your hands and he takes the bag of snacks from you and sticks out one of his hands UGH such a gentleman

lets you ramble about anything and stares at your side profile as he listens 

joins in with a few quips here and there but ultimately is pretty quite and lets you speak or lets the silence cozy into the conversation

sees that there’s a guy sitting on a bench up the road and he switches places with you so that you’re further away from the stranger 

also wraps a protective hand around your waist until you both are past the random dude but yams will glance behind yall every once in a while

when you two reach the mini forest he ends up taking the lead claiming that he knows a good spot

and damn, he’s right

it’s a little clearing that is illuminated solely by the moonlight and he sets the bag of snacks down beside him before sitting down himself, apologizing for not bringing a blanket that you two could sit on 

pats the spot next to him so that you sit right beside him and he leans back with his hand on yours ONGMIRG 

is the super cheesy type and tells you that you look really pretty and that,,,he kind of wants to kiss you

you: *experiencing heart palpitations* and you did this for what. 

yamaguchi: ...because i love you?

you: *K.O*

all in all, yamaguchi is the boyfriend that completely indulges your late-night escapades <3 

hinata shoyo.

is either completely fast asleep and doesn’t see your text or was awake and not planning to sleep for the next five hours, no in-between

but if he’s awake and sees your text, he agrees right away and asks where you want to meet up and what time because homeboy probably has to bike to get there AgAGAGAGA

literally doesn’t even show up in sneakers. he’s wearing sandals and shorts with a short sleeve top 

“i came in my pjs”

“i see that.”

asks if you two can bike around instead because he doesn’t want to have to wheel his bike around for like an hour 

he tells you to hold on tight because the bike was built for one person, and when you press against his back his warmth is literally so,,,comforting 

has no sense of awareness and will scream going down a hill in the middle of a neighborhood, no fucks given

so, no, he doesn’t notice any weriod people even if there are some around

you always end up running into some weird people and you get new interesting stories every other day because let’s be honest hinata is a magnet for crazy shit and crazy people (usually crackheads) 

you both just ride around as he talks about his day, usually his sister always comes up in the conversation( “she asked me to marry you the other day” “doirhgAEROIHFGRE SHOYO WHAT” “what? i told her i would. i keep my promises!”)

after like thirty minutes he begs for a break and you stop at a little 24/7 ice cream store that is run by the sweetest elderly couple

you share a sundae because you don’t want to eat too much this late at night

he plops on the bench right outside the store with his bike leaning against the metal handles, and h snuggles up to you and watches you scroll on your phone

he talks a little here and there, but for the most part, he goes quiet, and it’s during this time where you’re unaware of his gaze that he just takes his time drinking in your features in the yellow light of the lamppost 

he can’t read the mood most times, but this time he does, and he stays quiet, and he thinks to himself

that he really will marry you one day

all in all, hinata gives you the impulsive young teenage experience of late night bike rides while eating his fair share of ice cream

yachi hitoka.

another either or, except this time she’s either fast asleep or stressing over homework and the nine tests she has the next day

when you ask if she can go on a walk with you she’s hesitant because she doesn’t want to get in trouble with her mom and she’s a total goody goody and terrified of doing anything reckless; but then she remembers that her mom was on a business trip and so she, very cautiously, says yes

you: good. i’m outside your door btw

yachi: i never had a choice did i

you have to meet her at her house because she’s way too scared to walk by herself at night; she might even make you factime her as you commute because she’s worried for you

jumps at every little thing, even the crows cawing make her shit herself

instictively grabs onto your sleeve and nervously look around the entire time, to the point where she doesn’t hear what you say

so you offer to go to a little cafe that’s still open and right away she nods

she’s so adorable, she bows really deeply when you two walk into the store and apologizes for it being so late

and finally, because you two are safe, she’s calm and smiling as she sips at her strawberry smoothie

awkwardly and very shyly reaches out for your hand on the table and gently lays her palm on yours

canon: yachi totally has freckles and you can’t convince me otherwise 

her face is red and her freckles are just on display you can’t help but coo at her and tuck some hair behind her ear because god could she get any cuter?

you two end up staying for like a hour and a half and very shyly she asks if you could walk her home 

and this time on the walk she’s not overly cautious and seems to enjoy the nighttime breeze and your hand softly clasping hers

does that cute thing where she lays her head on your shoulder or arm while you both are walking and looks up at you through her eyelashes and asks if you could give her a kiss on the cheek </3

you: stop. please. im going to die.

when you’re at her door she literally just stands there awkwardly for a few seconds before tilting her head upwards and pressing her lips to yours and then promptly running inside

video calls you three seconds afterwards to make sure you get home safely 

all in all, you might need to be the impulsive one, but yachi enjoys spending late night time with you more than she admits. also please kiss her thanks

"Oh, I didn't know he was invited."

All Patton had done was walk in the door. He hadn't even said hi, or hugged Roman yet, he just walked in the door, and Janus was already on his back for just existing in his presence.

It was going to be a long night.

"Yes? He's my best friend, you know!" Roman defended as he brought Patton to sit on the couch with him and Logan.

"Wow, rude." Logan said.

Roman made a series of offended noises. "You're my boyfriend! So obviously Patton is my best friend!"

As the two quickly dissolved into playful banter, Patton stood to go put his overnight bag in Roman's room, hearing Janus whisper something to Remus and Virgil as he walked by.

Just ignore it, he thought, not really in the mood to argue today. Especially not after what Patton had dubbed ‘The Double Closet Incident’.

It was disastrous. Not only did Patton get locked in a closet with Janus, who has claustrophobia, he discovered that he may have a thing for men. Who knew?

Roman. Roman probably knew, especially after he had adopted Patton into their little friend group. And if being gay was a contest, Roman would be the judge.

But...it was normal to feel that way, right? It wasn't weird to feel embarrassed when someone got up in your personal space, was it? It wasn't abnormal to blush when someone said kind words to you, or odd to imagine yourself in different scenarios with someone you saw on a daily basis and they were-

Wait, what was he doing again?

Patton sighed as he set down his bag by Roman's bed. Those were thoughts for another day. He was supposed to be having fun at his best friend's sleepover, after all!

Patton put on a happy face and went back to the living room to join the others, finding that Roman and Remus were wrestling over something, Logan and Janus were debating, and Virgil was scrolling on his phone. Yep, it was going to be a long night.

After breaking up Roman and Remus' tussle, watching a couple of movies, and other various shenanigans, Remus decided to gather everyone up in his room to play truth or dare.

If Patton learned anything from watching the others' turns, it was to always choose truth when Remus picks you.

"Double D, Truth or Dare?" Remus asked excitedly, even though he already knew what Janus would say.

"Dare."

Remus grinned like a shark. "I dare you and Patton to stay in my closet for one hour together."

Both Janus and Patton went pale.

"I...lied. I meant truth." Janus quickly said, hoping that Remus would let up.

"Nope! Too late! Now, you and Patton have to get in there, have hate sex or something, and come out in an hour!"

"Uh- we can't!" Patton exclaimed suddenly, and then all eyes were on him.

"What, are you afraid of the dark or something?" Remus teased.

"Um- no- well, kinda- but no. I- uh- have claustrophobia."

Janus looked shocked, to say the least. Thankfully, everyone was still looking at Patton.

"Yeah, small spaces are absolute torture to be in, and I would prefer it if none of us did stuff that involves small spaces, because then I'll worry about them!" Patton rambled quickly, trying to get all attention on him.

Remus rolled his eyes. "Ugh, fine. But you guys still need to do something together."

Patton blushed a bit, and Janus sighed, looking relieved.

Eventually, Remus gave up, and just dared Janus to eat shaving cream.

The rest of the night went smoother, and Patton ended up telling a lot of weird secrets, but not very important ones.

Eventually, everyone was asleep in either Roman's room, or Remus' room. Everyone except Patton, who couldn't get his brain to turn off.

Patton reluctantly got out of his sleeping bag, and made his way to the front door, maybe some fresh air would clear his mind.

Turns out, he wasn't the only one who had that idea, because as he stepped outside, he found the one and only Janus on the porch, smoking a cigarette.

Before Patton could turn back around, Janus saw him, and nodded his head in acknowledgment. Well, no going back now.

Patton silently sat down in the wooden rocking chair next to where Janus was standing, staring off into space a little before speaking up.

"You-you know that smoking is bad for you, right?"

Janus' lips curled up in a small smile as he chuckled. "I'm aware. Don't worry your pretty head, I only do it when I'm stressed."

Patton decided to ignore the way being called pretty by Janus felt and focused on the other part of that statement. "What are you stressed about?"

Janus blew out a puff of smoke, and suddenly Patton was very distracted by his lips.

"You. You're...different than how I thought you'd be." Janus said solemnly, drawing in another breath.

"Is...is that a bad thing?" Patton asked quietly, looking down to the floor.

Janus glanced at Patton with an indecipherable look on his face. "To be honest? I don't know. On one hand, you're actually a decent person."

"Thank you?"

"And on the other," Janus continued. "I've treated you like s**t for no reason other than spite."

"...It's okay-"

"It's not." Janus interrupted.

They sat in silence for awhile, trying to figure out if the other still wanted them here or not.

"Why did you think I was a bad person?" Patton asked quietly.

Janus huffed. "It's complicated."

"I mean...we got all night."

"...true." Janus sighed. "I think it's because ‘nice’ people don't usually want anything to do with me, and when they do, it's usually for the wrong reasons." He explained. "So when you started talking to me...I don't know, you reminded me of all the wrong people."

Patton's heart broke. He reminded Janus of some probably terrible memories, and had probably been hurting him just by being around him! No wonder Janus frowned whenever Patton walked in a room!

"Janus, I'm so so sorry, I never knew-"

"What are you sorry for?"

"I- That I remind you of some terrible people in your life-"

"Patton," Janus rest a hand on Patton's shoulder, making him blush. "You don't have any control over who you remind me of. Please, don't apologize for that."

"Well- then you can't apologize for being reminded of those people either!" Patton argued.

"I didn't say that, I said I was sorry for treating you terribly!"

"Well, then, I guess you're forgiven!" Patton retorted.

Janus looked at him in shock, as if Patton had just said a bunch of profanities, before quickly looking back to stare off into the distance again. His cheeks were red, but Patton convinced himself that he was probably cold out here.

"You're...too forgiving." Janus mumbled softly, as if he was talking to himself.

"I think that's a good thing." Patton replied.

Janus huffed. "...Thank you." He said, looking at Patton with a small smile on his face. "For everything."

Patton blushed. "Y-Yeah. No problem."

Janus looked at him with a disagreeing look on his face, but let it go.

They settled into comfortable silence as Janus threw his cigarette away and Patton almost fell asleep.

The second time Patton had to force his head up, Janus huffed.

"You should probably get to sleep."

As if on cue, Patton yawned. "So should you." He said sleepily, rubbing his eyes.

Janus chuckled. "Fine. I'll go back to bed if you do."

"Okay, fine. You have a deal."

Janus had that stupid, self-satisfied smirk on his face that he usually wore that made Patton feel fuzzy inside.

"Good," He smirked. "See you in the morning."

"Yeah. See ya."

Janus ventured into the house, Patton following a few moments later.

Patton felt like he was getting into dangerous territory with Janus, but instead of feeling concerned, he felt more excited than ever.

like. dealing with a cat and you’re a stranger trying to gain their trust

what he never will forget nor stop teasing her was about

her spinning on her heels to walk into the direction she was previously coming from

he won her over when he brings the topic of cats wandering around their school campus

for a moment, he found her reasoning to be petty and unreasonable until it finally clicks inside her head, from her point of view when he really thought it through.

MORE SPOILERS UNDER CUT, continuation of before

i am less insane today (i have chilled out and my opinions have changed)

@cauli-flawa @'ing you but this is more me rambling on the magologue in general.

also other note: im still staying away from main fandom right now but i wasn't aware the fandom apparently wasnt all on the same page regarding this. huh, oops

my very first impressions (above) were that he just gets stuck there forever (assuming that dream friends in star allies are just a game mechanic). and that he didn't need to work to refriend the dream team because he just befriended au versions of that don't recognize him and that the og dream team just thinks he's dead forever. and That's why i was flipping out LMAO

took a bit of time to think about it and leveling more stuff up but it seems highly likely that he does return to dreamland (lol) at some point. which makes things a lot better ofc, but my feelings on this are still solidly really mixed. basically i don't think this was as good of an ending for him as the typical come back and make up to everyone by building a theme park thing the canon already had going

it brings up way too many concerns for me. like assuming he got stuck in the clash universe for at least a couple years, from the credits images, he's obviously formed a relationship with the people there. bandee's in charge of the apple tree in the clash games and if the tree is magolor's, magolor probably Gave him that responsibility, so he's formed a relationship with at least one of the dream team. if he returns to the regular universe after that, does he just leave all of those relationships behind? isn't that like betraying them again when you think about it? or does he travel back and forth between the two universes and live this weird life where he's friends with two alternate versions of the same people at once? that doesn't sound healthy. isn't it kinda unsatisfying that the first iterations of the dream team he befriends are versions that don't recognize him and don't know what he's done still?

i will give him this in that it seems like he's genuinely changed. something very interesting (that i'll also go over a bit more later) is that his dialogue changes to become more apologetic under all of his usual mischievous nonsense when you upgrade his abilities all the way, which i didn't catch earlier because i didn't get to that point yet. but like this also makes things way more bittersweet after the credits

my main gripe right now is that, in a good number of his max upgraded abilities dialogue he's pretty much always thinking of kirby&co or what he's going to do for them, or what he's going to do on dreamland when he gets back. in particular i thought his max levitation dialogue was the most solid evidence that he Did, for sure, consider kirby and the rest of the dream team friends during the main adventure, even if he was always planning to betray them, and that he misses them in that current point of time

cut to defeating the main boss cutscene. he cries and wipes his tears when he sees the portal home, and spreads his arms out as he goes in like a plea for it (and them) to take him back. and then he pops out in the clash universe, and there's zero trace of him seeming like he wants to go back to the regular universe in any of those screenshots. nothing. it shows him forming a relationship with these alternate dreamlanders and then the very last picture is that he seems happy, and that's it. it honestly felt like a spit to the face to the entire mode before that. like am i reading too into this??? did i miss something? am i assuming too much? i feel like the game treats it like here it's your happy ending!! when it's not the Right happy ending. the story was never supposed to be just about wanting to get out of another dimension

this brings me back to my first point which is that the, apparently, alternate universe magoland, would've been a better conclusion imo. like the clash ending is interesting to think about but i dont think it adds that much to his arc? the fact that we know he gave the gem apple tree to the community and that he shares its/the master crown's power with everyone is sweet for sure, and shows a bit more indepth development than just building a theme park, but it brings up too many other concerns.

other than that, some general thoughts, as a mode itself i think this was solid and a good new extra mode to the main game. ability upgrade mechanic is fun, boss design and bosses being upgraded is totally on point, i loved the music, great difficulty scaling compared to the main game, i dont really know where all of this apple symbolism came from but like! cool i guess!? dialogue was FANTASTIC i loved his stupid quips. i was worried he didn't actually change since he kept going on about taking over things and destroying his enemies, but his feelings change the more you upgrade his abilities. his first thought is using things for evil, but he constantly has second thoughts or other feelings underneath that layer. it's like seeing him change in real time and seeing him only just starting his redemption arc. surprisingly indepth for its medium with how subtle it is and i love it

Some ramblings about Memory and why I’m happy it wasn’t canonized

Honestly the more I think about the story, the happier I am that Memory (a winner of the Memories of the Dead canonization contest) was never officially canonized. And Im saying this as someone who absolutely adores Nidhiki as a character and would've liked to see more content of him, especially one that explores his psyche in a nuanced manner.

Before we go on a few disclaimers. First off, yes, I'm aware that Memory is fan-made and that some people see critiquing fanfics as bad, at the very least unless the author personally requested it. And I completely understand that sentiment given that fanfics are hobbies and the writers may not always want critique on stuff they worked on for personal fun and passion. Thing is, Memory was not only submitted to a canonization contest, but was one of the winners. The only reason it (and the other winners of the contest) weren't canonized was because Greg wasn't allowed to visit BZPower anymore (or had it to do with LEGO quitting Bionicle g1 completely in preparation for g2, don't remember tbh). In other words, Memory was this close getting canonized, and was only left out due to external circumstances. That makes criticizing Memory fair game in my opinion.

Secondly: I actually like Memory as a story. It's well written, explores Nidhikis character in an interesting way and has a really interesting theme of how some individuals are forced into roles they didn't want to by circumstance. I think it fills in gaps from the lore nicely (especially the ending). And not only does the story use Mimic (a Dark Hunter I desperately wish was used in canon) it characterizes and uses him rather well. Him acting as a pararell/comparasion to Nidhiki is a solid way to showcase the storys central theme. All in all, it's a solid story in vacuum. Even as part of the larger Bionicle mythos I do like some elements of it and have adopted them into my headcanonverse.

That being said, I have one major issue with the story specifically regarding how it relates to the greater Bionicle canon. And that is, giving Nidhiki a "my original teammates were killed by Dark Hunters and now I desire revenge" type of backstory doesn't work for his character and arguably makes him less interesting.

First off, I understand why the writer chose to do this decision, to paint Nidhiki in a more sympathetic light. In canon, Nidhiki isn't really a sympathetic character (or at the very least wasn't intended to be one, ymmv whether or not he can be seen as one). He is selfish and his reason for betraying toa Mangai boils down to desire for glory and self-preservation. So wanting to give Nidhiki a more sympathetic backstory in order for the reader to understand why he is like that and thus sympathizing with him makes sense especially given how Bionicle doesn’t really have that many sympathetic villains to begin with and Nidhiki is one of the few who could easily be written in a more sympathetic light without making his character worse thanks to his backstory being rather tragic and there being a few hints of him being a more sympathetic character than the canon presents.

Thing is, by giving Nidhiki a desire of wanting revenge against Dark Hunters, I feel the writer misses a major part of Nidhikis character, one that could be easily expanded on to make him a more sympathetic and understandable character: his pragmatic opportunism born out of survival instinct.

Nidhiki is largely driven by pragmatism and self-preservation, by making actions that benefit him. This sense of pragmatism most likely comes from him coming from Tren Krom Peninsula: a harsh climate where you had to be pragmatic in order to survive. Pretty much everything from his characterization boils down to this survival instinct, this desire to survive taught by harsh living conditions. This is the core of his characterization and something worth keeping in mind  both when trying to understand him and writing him. And while the writer of   Memory does understand this to some extent, I feel they only saw it as part of his character rather than the main core of his characterization and driving force of his actions.

While Nidhiki loosing his teammates does add more fuel into him not trusting anyone and developing this pragmatic mindset (something Memory does pretty good job showcasing), I also feel that it's kinda unnecessary. It feels as if it exists as this big push, this big traumatic event that shaped Nidhiki's mindset into this pragmatic self-survival we see in canon and I just...don't feel that suits him. It makes more sense if rather than one big traumatic event that made him what he was it was a series of smaller events, it was him living in a place with a certain mental climate that forced a certain mindset just so he could survive.

The backstory also feels that like it exists largely to give Nidhiki a history with and grudge against the Dark Hunters which just...doesn't make sense at all when you give more context into canon. Like, if Nidhiki had a grudge against them I doubt he would've interacted with Lariska the way he did in BOADH let alone agreed to betray his team, no matter how good opportunity it felt like. Well at least it gives him one more reason to despise TSO and his organization and that’s always a plus if you ask me.

However,the main reason I don't really like this is because it feels kinda cliche and makes Nidhiki less interesting than he could be. Like, it feels that the easiest way to make your audience to sympathize with a villain is to give them a tragic backstory of them loosing a loved one that made them bitter and cynical. It just feels like a cop-out, an easy shorthand. It feels such "been there done that" and does more harm than good for Nidhikis characterization, feels like its there to make him more sympathetic through tried and true means than actually trying to understand him and what makes him tick, and building up a more sympathetic portrayal from there.

What makes this all worse is that I do think you could make Nidhiki a more sympathetic character without resorting to cliche tools like that. And thats by focusing on expanding on whats already there: his desire for survival and self-preservation. While it does make him rather selfish, its also what makes him understandable and (for lack of better term) real. While we want to talk about how self-righteous and good we are, truth is that desire for self-preservation and survival is a driving force that can override (or at the very least heavily affect) our moral compass, especially if you come from a traumatic upbringing. And like I said, the harsh survival of the fittest nature of T.K Peninsula certainly was that kind of place where Nidhiki was essentially forced to adapt a certain mindset. It’d be cool to see him slowly develop this mindset from the environment he grew up in, to have whatever potential goodness and optism he once had be eroded through him having to come in terms with the messed up nature of the world. it would’ve made him much more interesting, sympathetic and tragic character than he is in canon, all while feeling unique

That being said, I understand why the writer did the way they did. Like I said, Nidhiki isn’t exactly the most sympathetic character in canon, and wanting to give him a backstory that’s easy to sympathize with is an easy and good way to do that. It’s also worth pointing out that Memory was an oneshot, so the writer didn’t have time to go through everything Nidhiki went through before becoming part of Toa Mangai and as such, it’s easy to understand why the writer choose to give one big event that changed his mindset. I also dont think giving Nidhiki revenge motive is inherently bad (I mean its basically canon he wanted revenge against Lhikan), nor is making him more emotional and not just a pragmatic opportunist (if anything making him emotional is more than welcome in this house). But I feel that Memory just kinda, changes his character in such a drastic way that didn't sit with me, at least not completely. It kinda makes him an archetypical "I'm aloof and refuse to work with others because I lost my friends against these villains" type of character. Not only is that rather cliche that's also not what Nidhiki is like...He's more interesting as an opportunist who became such due to the harsh nature of Tren Krom Peninsula rather than your archetypical edgy shonen anime rival whos aloof because tragic backstory murder.

So yeah, Memory is a good story but I’m happy it isn’t canon because while it was an interesting take of my favorite Bionicle character, it being canon would’ve done more harm than good for his characterization as whole I feel. Also you can make a character sympathetic without having to resort to “they saw someone close to them die and desire revenge because of that”, especially when it doesn’t fit to that characters characterization as whole.

BnHA One-Shot Fic Recs (pt1)

Making some fic-rec posts has been on my to-do list for a while and I’m finally doing it, yay! Currently I have 6 word doc pages full of just BnHA recs. So I’m splitting them up by length and completion, so first up is (part one of) one-shots! Let’s go!!!

Lets start with some classic Izuku and DadMight!

However, somehow, the boy still decided that there was something vital missing. This is fluffy and very cute. No one truly appreciates All Might as much as Izuku does, but 1A comes close. All Might deserves all the love, and this fic truly provides!!!

Dear Mr. All Might by QuizzicalCrow (tumblr: @quizzicalcrow​ ) Rating: G   Category: Gen   ~5,000 words Summary: As the #1 hero for decades, All Might has collected a lot of fan mail over the years. Toshinori tracks down a series of letters that only now, years later, does he appreciate for their significance.  I always love the thought of All Might looking through his fan mail, even if he can’t get to all of it. This was a wonderful glimpse into that AND it was made to be so, so personal and sweet. Go have some heart-healing fluff.

Growing Pains by LordofLies (tumblr: @theangelofchildren ) Rating: G   Category: Gen    ~5,900 words Summary: Izuku finds himself changed by his encounter with the Hero Killer, but changes of a more physical kind are in store for him as he begins to truly accept One for All as his own. Once, he would have been thrilled to look more like All Might, but now those connections are as much a source of anxiety as they are of pride.Or, Izuku wakes up one morning and sees the world through different eyes. Izuku having anxiety and Toshi being there to help him through it and calm him down? Sign me UP. Its also a pretty cool take on how One for All is able to change things about it’s holder. Could this happen in cannon? Who knows.... Regardless, it was a great read!

I’ll Carry You Home by Renesvetta Rating: G   Category: Gen   ~2,700 words Summary: While training with All Might, it wasn’t uncommon for Izuku to be so exhausted at the end of the day that he unwittingly fell asleep without regard for where he was. It consequently became part of All Might’s routine to help his young protégé home. During that time, Izuku may have let loose more than one sleepy confession towards his mentor.  Yes, it is as adorable as it sounds. Its tagged with “self indulgent Dad Might fluff” which is both accurate and appreciated. In other words: Superb you funky little writer!

Simple Gifts by QuizzicalCrow Rating: G    Category: Gen   ~6,700 words Summary: One year ago, Izuku received the greatest gift he could ever imagine. Now he’s determined to return the favor for the one responsible for it all with a gift of his own.  First off, I love the idea of Izuku and Toshi quietly celebrating the anniversary of passing on OfA from All Might to Izuku. Even just taking the day to hang out with each other. It’s a really precious idea. But there’s not just fluff! Izuku finds himself in a fight, again. (cool villain quirk, too!) I love all of the small details that are in this fic (and in Crow’s other works, too!) anyway its exciting AND very heartwarming, so go read it!!!

Affectionate by Sevi007 (tumblr: @sevi007 ) Rating: G   Category: Gen   ~2,600 words Summary: Toshinori starts to show affection very easily around his students. The  reactions he gets for that are not quite the ones he had anticipated - well, not all of them, at least.  Toshi is LOVED, APPRECIATED, and 1A feels like HOME. how many times can i say “cute” and “heartwarming” on this post?? bc these are some amazing writers, whom I adore, and their writing makes my heart WARM. AND. FUZZY. i mean, even just the first few paragraphs of this one just, really sets the scene of what i like to believe the 1A dorm is (on a good day, lol). its a really nice read, so go treat yo’ self by reading it.

paint me in trust by dinomight Rating: G   Category: Gen   ~6,400 words Summary: The first mark Izuku gets is a slight brush of green across his temple. It’s the soft touch of a mother holding her son for the first time. Inko has one to match, the same shade of green staining the tips of her fingers. Hers is more noticeable; Izuku’s tends to blend into his hairline. He loves it anyways. He has to. It’s the only soulmate mark he has. (Or: how Izuku goes from just green to a rainbow, UA-style.)  Ok, so this fic sort of plays off the idea of soulmates, and does not fit in with soulmates in the usual form of the trope. First off its completely platonic. Its categorized as Gen and sticks to that. Also it doesn’t seem to be as obligatory and permanent as you would think it would be. It seems to be more of the universe telling you who has the possibility of being important in your life. I really really loved this, it was so adorable and gives you that sweet, sweet Izuku angst, before healing your heart with the power of friendship and found family!!!

The Die Has Been Cast by ChiwiTheKiwi (tumblr: @chiwithekiwi​ ) Rating: G   Category: Gen   ~5,400 words Summary: “There’s something about that kid you aren’t telling me, isn’t there?”When no answer meets him, Shouta tries again.“You know something about Midoriya’s quirk that you haven’t shared with me. Is that right?”(Or: A canon "What If" surrounding the latest manga events and focusing on Aizawa finally making a connection.) First off, this fic has spoilers for the manga, so dont read unless you’re past chp212! I loooooooove OfA reveal fics, especially when it’s Aizawa that finds out. He deserves to know!!! its kind of important!!!! This fic chooses a great moment to work off of, and does a great job with Aizawa’s character. I really enjoyed it and couldn’t keep myself from going back and reading it just now LOL

These last two are actually two-shots, but it makes it an even 10! also Izuku and dadmight, so we can continue the theme here...

Some Unspoken Thing by LittleKy Rating: G   Category: Gen   ~7,900 words (2chps) Green, Toshinori has always thought, is the color of life anew.(Or: It's time for Yagi Toshinori to finally accept that he has a son, now, in all but blood. It's time for Midoriya Hisashi to accept that as well.) YES ALL MIGHT! ADMIT THAT IZUKU IS YOUR SON! great portrayal of the characters and really hits the nail on the head for DadMight. and Izuku in this story is just the smallest green floof that you wish to give a hug. NEVER MIND ALL MIGHT, YOU TOOK TOO LONG SO IZUKU IS MY SON NOW AND IM NOT GIVING HIM BACK ( no but seriously i want to hug this fic its so cute TTuTT )

Now that the actual recs are over I can rant here- look i really tried to slim my recs down, but i have almost 300 bnha fics bookmarked,some of them are “to read” or theyre in progress, etc but i managed to get this list sorta slimmed down? a little?(to only 58!!!) but as i was gathering this post together it felt like i dont have very many Dadmight recs on that list??? but i havent rechecked all the other fics i was just going through the oneshots. i... kinda read a lot more fics with AIzawa in it instead. it be that way. DadMight content is SO GOOD. but my fav is aizawa im sorryyyyy anyway i have another SEVENteeN oneshots to put in rec posts and that does NOT include the mulitchapter and friikin series and stuff... and like i said this is aaaaaaallllllllllllllll BnHA. batfam fic posts will come after, and then star wars, and then maybe star trek? we’ll see. i have a very specific taste in ST fics and that is Tarsus IV whump. which. i have not read in a while. when they say “that trope came from ST” for sooooooo many tropes, you WISH other fandoms had tarsus as a trope, holy crap it is TOP TIER angst fodder. if you love to write/read whump, angst, and h/c i would HIGHLY recommend that you take a bit of time and explore the content and stories there. heck maybe i will make a ficrec post for just tarsus angst. ok.

“Y’all go on ahead, I’ll take her home.” Jasper says. Bella looks at Edward who’s looking at Jasper. Edward takes Jasper’s arm and pulls him into the house. Bella looks at you. 

“Why are you guys acting so weird.” You ask. Bella stays quiet, probably thinking of a response. You raise your eyebrows. 

“We aren’t acting weird. If anyone’s acting weird, you’re acting weird. I’m not acting weird. What does that word even mean? Weird. It’s kind of a relative term if you think about it-” Bella rambles. 

“Bella.” You interrupt. She sighs. The sound of the garage door opening stops any future words before they escape your lips. A sleek sports car backs out, and the windows are so tinted, you can’t see who’s driving. Edward walks out after the car, a disbelieving laugh falling from his mouth. The car stops by you and Bella, and Jasper exits the driver's seat. He stalks over to the passenger seat and opens the door. You give Bella an expectant look, but Edward murmurs something into her ear. 

“Well have fun, you kids don’t stay out too late.” She gives you a wink. Your eyebrows knit together. 

“Wha-” You start. She waves you off and her and Edward get into his Volvo. You look at Jasper, who’s now back in the driver seat. You look at him, then back at your sister who just abandoned you. 

“Guess you’re stuck with me.” Jasper jokes. Your stomach does flips. You’ve never been alone with a boy like this, a very, very attractive boy. 

“Heh.” You force a laugh. “Do you, uh, do you know where to go?” 

It was hard to ignore the quiver in your voice, or the tapping of your leg. He nods, then puts the car in reverse. An overwhelming sense of calmness fills the car, and you find your eyelids getting heavier and heavier. You turn to glance at Jasper, only to find him already looking at you.

“Eyes on the road, cowboy.” You tease. Scenery rushes past until you pull onto a familiar road. A tickling sensation in your nose makes you jolt back to awareness. A sneeze manifests in your chest, and Jasper watches you, amused. Tightness fills your throat until- “Achoo!” 

A violent sneeze rips through you, but as much as it hurts, it also feels really good. That is, until you feel a tear. Jasper pulls into the driveway as you reach your hand up to touch your forehead. Sure enough, you pull your hand back to find streaks of red running down your fingers. You look at Jasper, remembering how he doesn’t like blood. You go to unbuckle your seatbelt, only to be stopped by an ice cold hand. You shiver, but you’re more worried about the blood you just smeared on his skin. 

“Oh! I’m so sorry, you can come inside and wash your hands.” You offer, feeling guilty. The air around you feels tense, unnerving. Jasper retracts his reach, both hands forming tight fists on his lap. You look up at his face, only to see that his lips are pulled to a thin line and his pupils are three times the normal size. Uh oh. He looks as if he’s not breathing, his face illuminated by the moon, making him seem like he’s frozen in a painting. You don’t dare breathe, trying to make yourself invisible. He closes his eyes, then after a moment, reopens them and shuts off the car engine. You nervously swallow, watching his jaw tense out of the corner of your eye. He then calmly opens his eyes, and plasters a reassuring smile onto his face. He opens his door and steps out, and before you can reach to open yours, he’s already opened it for you. You unbuckle your seatbelt for real, now, and step out into the chilled spring air. You shiver, but a split second later, a jacket is draped over your shoulders. You look up to see Jasper staring down at you, so you give him a thankful smile and open the front door. 

“Bella?” You call out. As you walk over the threshold, you feel Jasper’s presence right behind you. You glance over your shoulder. “The kitchen’s in there.” 

“Thank you.” He nods, walking past you. Bella walks down the steps and her jaw drops at the sight of your wound. 

“Wha- How-” She stutters, then swallows visibly and shouts over her shoulder, “Edward!” Edward comes racing down the stairs, then after taking one look at you, races into the kitchen. You walk past Bella to go to the bathroom on the second floor. 

“Are you gonna help me clean this up or are you just gonna stand there and gawk?” You say. She sighs and reaches for a damp washcloth, gently pushing you to sit on the edge of the bathtub and wiping the blood off of your skin. “Is Jasper okay?” 

“He’s fine, just isn’t a big fan of blood.” Bella answers. She presses down harder to scrub off some of the dried blood.

“So he’s like- Ow- like you.” You tease, wincing. She furrows her eyebrows and bites her lip. 

“Yeah. Like me.” She says, a small smirk pulling at the corner of her lips. She rinses out the washcloth and hangs it over the faucet. 

“Where’s Charlie?” You ask, walking into your room. Bella walks in as you pull your bloody shirt over your head. She walks carefully to avoid the glass pieces on the floor. 

“He’s down at the station, practically calling for someone’s head on a pike.” Bella nervously chuckles. You nod, pulling a pj shirt over your head carefully. You pull down your pants and replace them with soft sweatpants. Pulling your hair up, you follow Bella back downstairs where both boys are sitting at the table. 

“Oh, you’re still here.” You say, surprise tainting your voice. Bella elbows your side, and a small ‘uhn’ escapes your lips. “I mean, I’m glad you are, I just figured you guys had to get home or.. Something.” You look at Bella, silently begging her to stop your foot from going into your mouth any further. 

“Charlie’s gonna be gone for awhile. You guys are welcome to stay.” She invites. Not what I meant, Bella. 

“I can put in a frozen pizza or something.” You offer. 

“We already ate, but thank you.” Jasper declines politely. Bella stares at you expectantly. You look at Edward and it clicks. Oh.

“Um, well, I think there’s a new episode of Criminal Minds on tonight, if you’d like to join me?” You ask Jasper. Edward looks at you, then Jasper. 

“He’d love to.” Edward answers. Bella grabs his hand and pulls him up the stairs, the door slamming shut behind them. Your heart races as Jasper stands and follows you to the couch. You turn on the tv, but you can barely pay attention due to the marble carved statue lounging next to you. 

“How are you feeling?” Jasper asks. You keep your eyes glued to the tv as you answer, wiping your palms on your sweats. “A little tired, to be honest.” You answer. He looks at you, concerned. “I’m fine, really. Doctor Cullen said I might feel dizzy or tired, I hit my head pretty hard.” 

“I can go- so you can rest- if you’d like.” He offers. You think back to the night’s events, and the heart-dropping feeling you felt when you saw that person in your room returns. 

“No!” You gasp. You screw your eyes closed. “Sorry. I mean, you don’t have to leave. I.. please don’t.” 

His cold hands make you shiver as they engulf yours. “I’ll stay as long as you need me to.” You nod, and settle back into the couch. Your body is inches from Jasper’s, and your hand still clenches his tightly. He doesn’t flinch. A sleepy feeling oozes over you, and your eyes get harder to keep open. You don’t realize that you’re falling asleep until your head hits something cold and hard, yet comfortable at the same time. An arm wraps around you and pulls you closer, stroking your hair as you lose consciousness.
