UH WHOA not only am i posting art but theres so much of it lmfao
ive been meaning to do this for mmmm a long time, and i decided to get it cleaned up so i can present folks with my homebrew/headcanon/thingy for the d&d playable races !! i know ive missed a few off but these are ones ive seen more of over all in my own travels in Nerd Game lol
ive only DMed one thing so far (our lost mines of phandelver adventure was a total blast but oh boy the shenanigans) but im like ... drowning in it all, have been for a loooonng time since i first played Neverwinter Nights when i was like 11, i just didnt have a party to mess with yet lmao (fingers crossed our schedules get sorted so the campaign goes ahead soooooonnn).. so ive been developing some of these various homebrewy headcanons for uh over half my life
getting them all together in one place like this was unbelievably fun !!
gonna yell under the cut for a bit about it more but very shortly i’ll be opening for d&d character / item / creature commissions so watch this space or pop me a message to get in a queue <3
these headcanon things are half based on “that looks cool” and Sciencing. a lot of the more humanoid in some way races ive really pulled on human ancestors a lot, as well as muscle development in different sports. And Animals, because ye
i haven’t included humans in this mammoth endeavour because we should all know what a Human People looks like, and their proportions aren’t any different in the world of D&D i run at least lol similarly, because they’re an exact intersection between humans & either elves or orcs, the half-species arent included on here either [shrugs] i WILL talk about them some here though !!
i might eventually update this with some npc generators ive made using my own descriptors and headcanons >.>
ELVES av height; 5′6 | heads-high; 8.5 generally long limbed, with fine wispy hair, elves senses are very heightened. helping in this, their eyes are almond-shaped with slightly narrow pupils, their large radar-like ears are very mobile, and the underside of their noses are covered in a lightly damp pitted leather. part of their ability to maintain grace with an elongated frame, aside from longer springy feet, is aided by a tail built somewhat like a horse, with a skirt of hair down its length, only with a slightly longer bone to it than would be seen in the typical pony. excepting a very light dusting on their lower limbs, they typically have very little body hair. sometimes their skin shimmers, or freckles sparkle.
GNOME av height; 3′6 | heads-high; 6.5  gnomes are almost like diminutive elves with a few key differences. their hair tends to be wild if left alone, but is often styled wildly anyway. set rather low on rounded but long faces, their large almond eyes are keen, and small hands very nimble. it’s not sure if its due to their close environments or frequent encounters with accidents in experiments, but their skulls are surprisingly hard, and they possess small horn nubs made of bone and coated in keratin. their small petal-shaped ears are set low and point outward, and are able to move a little to catch sound. they may look fragile due to their size and build but they are pretty hardy and more than capable.
HALFLING av height; 3′ | heads-high; 6 a very hardy but soft and welcoming folk, halflings are built for walking and surviving well, often coming from a semi-nomadic tradition. they typically have round faces with stronger jaws and soft round eyes, and their large ears are pointed upright. their figures easily get a little curved and chubby, especially when they have easy access to decent food, in preparation for harder times and the odd period of hunkering down for some downtime, say in poor weather. truly the most functional part of a halfling is their short powerful legs with big fairly flexible hard feet, and lion-like tail for balance, both insulated by hair.
DWARF av height; 4′3 | heads-high; 6.5 dwarves are accustomed to life in tougher terrain, typically with large parts spent in the ground. their broad frames are also squat down with thick short limbs, for huge power and for life in tunnels. wide feet keep them steady and sensitive to significant seismic energy in the earth, and wide hands aid in their work and the feel of the rock. their large round ears stick outward and are slightly mobile, large noses help condition the air, and high-set eyes with huge irises aid their vision in darker spaces and the ability to peek over things without being fully exposed. their skulls are also very thick just in case of falling rocks. all dwarves are very hairy and grow beards, taking pride in keeping and styling it.
GOLIATH av height; 7′6 | heads-high; 10 a totally different variety of rock & mountain people to dwarves, they do share a few traits. a goliath’s thick limbs are long with a big reach and huge stride, with big hands and feet for steady movement. as well as being hugely tall, they are broad, especially in their shoulders, with a long neck elevating their head further. their facial features tend to be very sharp, but long. they have little to no body hair, and they often dont grow head hair either, but decorate their skulls with tattoos. as they get older, the upper surfaces of their body develop pebble like growths under the skin, often in similar patterns to their habitats.
FIRBOLG av height; 7′6 | heads high; 9 firbolg typically live in deep forests but are actually a giantkin - although not too unbelievable given their huge height and thick build. large parts of their body are hairy, nearly furry, and their head hair is thick and wild, and they often have facial hair too. their large heads have long thick noses with an almost bovine leather to their top lips, and wide set eyes. their fluffy ears are very mobile, but when relaxed they drop and point downward. their nails are thick and sturdy, aiding in being even more dexterous while being so big. sometimes they are covered in layers of clothing, but they possess a tiny goat-like tail.
DRAGONBORN av height; 6′6 | heads-high; 8 dragonborns diverged from true dragons in the ancient past, likely due to a strong magical influence of some kind, but not so long ago that the bloodlines of dragons are absent from the race of dragonborn. (the illustration shows the typical head-shape and placement of ears, each bloodline has its own features). their chest is still very round like an animal, with deep chest muscles, a slightly less mobile shoulder, and short upper arm. their 4 clawed hands and feet somewhat resemble that of a true dragon, but smaller and a little less dangerous. the length of a dragonborn’s tail can vary from just the length from hips to floor, or up to their full height, and as well as being very useful for balance and dexterity, can be used for fighting. different bloodlines can interbreed, with it being a matter of chance which line is present in offspring (although metallic is more dominant over gemstone, and chromatic over both ... (ah yeah gemstone, ill get to that soon))
AARAKOCRA av height; 5′ | heads-high; 8.5 as an avian species, especially one capable of flight, the aarakocra’s bones are hollow, making them on the one hand very agile but a little fragile. their large wingspan nearly brushes the floor, and their wings attach high on their back, through to a deep avian keel. their arms have a long forearm, which is covered in bird-like scutes, and their 4 clawed hands are still remarkably talon like which quite short palms and very mobile thumbs. their legs are very long and powerful, and backed by a typically wedge shaped tail. more often than not, their physical appearance takes after raptor species of birds, but different populations can trend towards many different appearances, including parrots and waterfowl.
TABAXI av height; 6′6 | heads-high; 9 tabaxi are an unusual sight in many places still. their cat-like bodies are very flexible and suited to their athletic climbing lifestyle. their long hands and feet have very a powerful grip, and they can retract their front claws. their long feline face is something like a cheetah or a clouded-leopard, with large highly mobile ears, large eyes and a strong nose.
ORC
av height; 6′6 | heads-high; 8
orcs are very powerfully build, with heavy muscles and thick bodies overall. compared to other humanoids they can look a little gorilla-like. their short legs are usually a little bent to carry weight better instead of busting knees when locked. their course wiry hair grows profusely all over their body. their strong nails often grow out a little pointed. their large thick heads have high heavy brows and protruding lower jaws, short round noses and low bud-shaped ears which stick outward. the lower jaw and sometimes upper contain tusks, sometimes multiple tusks, which are greatly cared for and very impressive.
HALF-ELVES av height; 5′6 | heads-high; 8.25 a half-elf’s build will be somewhere between human and elf, often inheriting something of an elf’s eyes and nose leather, shorter elf ears, and maybe a small tufted tail something like a rabbits
HALF-ORCS av height; 6′ | heads-high; 8 a half-orc’s build will be somewhere between human and elf, often inheriting something of an orc’s skin colour and dark and profuse wiry hair, shorter orc ears, and some small tusks.
GOBLIN av height; 4′ (stood straight) | heads high; 5.5 bat/cat-like ears, nose something like bear/cat, domed head, arms/legs same length, sparse wiry hair, claws, short digits, lithe but very strong and hardy
HOBGOBLIN av height; 5′3 (stood straight) | heads high; 8 bat/cat-like ears but pinched at the base, nose something like bear/cat, very domed head, arms slightly longer than legs, claws, sparse wiry hair, quite broad
BUGBEAR av height; 7′ (stood straight) | heads high; 7.5 bat-like ears, long domed head something like a lion/bear, arms very long, nearly totally covered in thick fur, big tusks and often fangs, very bear-like hands/feet, big claws, very broad
TRITON av height; 5′2 | heads high; 7.5 lithe but well muscled, quite streamlined for a humanoid, frilled ears, pretty flat face, fins on limbs/back, “hair” is tendrils/fins/etc, short strong legs & long arms, long webbed fingers, long flipper feet, gills along front/side of chest
YUAN-TI PUREBLOOD av height; 5′9 | heads high; 9 domed angular faces, lips are not humanoid, triangular eyes, scales, quite flat nostrils with sense pits following along underside cheekbones, very little cartilage in ear, some may have cobra hoods extending out of ear instead, very tall and thin with small hands/feet, reptilian claws
CENTAUR av height; 7′ | heads high; 10 fairly stocky pony body (usually about 4′10 at withers), very muscled front end, long neck & sloping human-shoulders, long faces with long broad noses, prominent lips, horse-like ears sticking up and out, their whole scalp can grow hair but shaved sides are common, can grow hair nearly all down human-spine
KOBOLD av height; 2′6 | heads high; 5.5 almost alligator-like head & eyes, tiny nub horns, quite animal-like chest, arms/legs same length, thick stubby tail same length of body, 4 digits with stubby claws, lithe but strong for their tiny size
KENKU av height; 4′ | heads high; 5.5 corvid features, deep chest but no keel, longer arms than legs, 4 digits with talons, hands human-like but scaled, wedge-like tail half of leg height, not-quite fully bird feet.
LIZARDFOLK av height; 6′6 | heads high; 7 iguana-like, egg-shaped head, neck wattle, line of back spines varies in height, long arms and legs, very reptilian hands and feet with long claws, elbow spikes
GRUNG av height; 3′ | heads high; 6.5 large heads, neck leads nearly directly into torso, super flexible, very long limbs, triangular body, short upper arm, shorter thigh, large hands/feet, 4 digits
LOXODON av height; 7′6 | heads high; 5.5 large head, trunk as long as torso, short legs / long arms, huge bones under thick muscle, thick skin, 4 digits with thick nails, large hands / rounded cushioned feet, v e r y broad and thick build, small tail with tuft at the end,
TORTLE av height; 7′6 | heads-high; 7 thick wrinkled skin encased in huge shell, stooping posture with neck extending forward, very long arms & short legs, 5 digits with reptilian claws, boxy head, heart shaped from above with features set far forward, tail to balance stoop
MINOTAUR av height; 7′ | heads-high; 9 powerful build with thick bones, typically well muscled, bovine head on thick neck, often very large horns, fairly long tufted tail, big hooved feet, broad 4 digit hands with thick nails, hair length varies
PLANE THINGS ???
listen this was a lot easier in the edition i first encountered lol anyway, until anything else comes up in extra material im just applying a few square & rectangle venn diagram rules
a useful word; planetouched. i dont really know why WotC seems to have dropped that term for at least 5e (i missed 4e entirely) but it refers to a “mortal native outsider” with lineage or influence from a plane other than the material, so “a material plane native creature with non-native plane influence, which can die”
GENASI height depends on material plane parent the result of a material plane / elemental pair (usually genies). they usually take after their material parent in build and broader features, but their elemental heritage comes through in features like magical hair, bright coloured eyes, unusual body temperatures, innate magics, etc.  genasi can interbreed with themselves, and the crossing of two elements can produce some interesting results (im working on that :>)
TIEFLINGS height depends on material plane parents this is the first of the squares & rectangles, and tbh its basically canonical. a tiefling is the result of a material plane humanoid being born with fiendish* influence. the word ‘tiefling’ refers specifically to a human with fiendish influence, but is also an umbrella term for ALL fiendish planetouched creatures. these DO have some names mentioned in the play material ! fey’ri = elves, tanarukk = orcs, wisplings = halflings, maeluth = dwarves, etc. so all fiendish planetouched are tieflings, but not all tieflings are human-based. the fiendish influence can be dormant for years or just string along for decades. AnyWay, all of them have horns, most have tails, odd skin or eye colour, and others can have all sorts of extraplanar features. *(fiends are another venn diagram thing in D&D, its an umbrella term for both demons and devils)
AASIMAR height depends on material plane parents aaand this is the second of the squares & rectangles, the not-strictly-canon one. okay duplicate what i said about tieflings, but make it about celestials not fiends, basically lmao. aasimar is an umbrella term, but also a human/celestial planetouched specifically! unlike the above, since its my homebrew concept i dont have other words specifically for other races’ celestial planetouched, but i’ll get there watch this space lol EnyHoo, they all tend to have a strange glow about them in general, but usually in their eyes, and maybe hair especially. it isnt uncommon for them to have a kind of halo around themselves, or glowing glyphs/runes/sigils on or around them either. while MOST dont have full wings, a dusting of feathers isnt unusual. the features of celestials can vary a lot more. for example, unicorns and leonals are actually celestials!
aaand the slightly odd-ball;
WARFORGED height depends on build purpose these are an interesting case, as warforged are actually constructs, brought into this world by the fusing of organic muscle (like wood or leathery material) to an inorganic shell (like stone or metal), imbuing a life-giving fluid of some sort to act like blood, and bringing life to it by a powerful ritual - a unique glyph etched into their heads. as their name suggests they are usually created to become soldiers, or other army positions, although they could be suited to other purposes. unlike most constructs, they are fully self-aware and have a mind on par with humans. they do not need sleep (but require rest) and they also do not naturally reproduce. if they live longer than their purpose, then they are turned loose to deal with the world as they wish. as they are MADE they can vary greatly depending on who made them, and for what exact purpose - although they tend to have beak-like mouths, and 3 digit hands and 2 toed feet.
AV. HEIGHT CHART FROM LEFT TO RIGHT !!! human - elf - dwarf - gnome - halfling - orc - goliath - firbolg - dragonborn - aarakocra - tabaxi - kenku - hobgoblin - bugbear - yuanti - triton - kobold - grung - lizardfolk - tortle - centaur - minotaur - loxodon
oooboy that was a lot of waffle :L

Huntsman’s Dragon, Preamble
This is the preamble to a focused starter (link here). It opens with a flashback that doesn't adequately allude to the full thing, so I would encourage viewers to read this fully... buuut it IS roughly 2000+ words in length, so it's understandable/I can't force otherwise if you don't read it.
Prologue
He remembers lazuli eyes staring brightly down at him o’er golden belly and golden wings, long whiplike tail swishing teasingly just out of reach. He remembers swiping for it, jumping, leaping, chasing; but always even the smallest of tide-polished scales darts further away than his stubby hands can grasp. He remembers huffing and dropping his rump on russet autumn leaves, furious that he has failed even so simple a task. It’s just like catching lizards and crawdads, he thinks! What could possibly be so hard about it?
(The answer, of course, is that neither are as deft in the air as his current prey. Neither of them are dragons.)
“This sucks!” he cries petulantly into the woods. “You can fly and I can’t! How is that even fair?! Can’t I play with you, even just a little…?”
He doesn’t expect anyone will hear him this far from the village, least of all the dragon; yet lo and behold, it alights and approaches him slowly, eyes wary, wings tucked, ears flattened against its horns, spines raised like hackles on a cat. ‘Strange,’ he thinks; ‘Didn’t Father tell me scared things never come close?’ But the greater part of him is enraptured, amazed that a little king of the skies might actually have listened to him when even Julian would not. (He should have been frightened, for even on all fours, its shoulders are still level with his chest; both its tail and wings could knock him flat in one sweep.) Round-eyed, he reaches out with a stubby hand. The dragon looks like it could eat him for breakfast, yet it cringes away from his fingers. Forked tongue flicks out to graze their tips—pulse racing, Caspar holds still. Very still.
He is certain the dragon can feel his heartbeat in the still autumn air.
It doesn’t move from tongue-licking distance. Slowly, he uncurls his fingers, rests them on the dragon’s snout. It flinches back with a startled chirp—Caspar flinches and gasps in turn. They stare at each other for several long moments, round sky-blue eyes meeting slitted lazuli.
A leathery tongue brushes fragile skin once more. Then the rest of the dragon comes, scaled head gliding smoothly ‘neath callused fingers.
The boy resists an urge to whoop out loud—doing so will surely frighten his new friend away. Instead, he simply watches the little dragon nuzzling him; then, slowly, he begins to wiggle his fingers to and fro atop its head. Those tide-polished scales feel so much more divine than they look, like silk and plate combined. It twitches under his motions, but relaxes almost as quickly. Unblinking lazuli eyes stare up at him. Are they perhaps as curious as his own? Whatever the reason, it doesn’t run away from him. Maybe, just maybe, it likes him.
You know what? He likes it too.
“I think I’ll call you Linny,” he says softly. He’s kinda proud of that name–it looks like a lindworm, all long and snakelike, and it’s cute besides! By now he’s finished stroking its nose and moved up towards the short ridges over its eyes. It chirps at him in response, and he smiles. “I bet we’re going to be good friends, Linny…”
---
Thread Start
“Oi, didja hear aboot the dragon a’ Oghma Moontens?”
“‘ow could I not? Made off with me neighbor’s best cows just a moon ago, and me neighbor’s babe too. Poor lass still squalls at night, wouldn’t ya knew.”
Definitely the right village, he notes as he hitches Ulric’s reins to a stable pole beside the pub. Daevin had been a sprawling place on the regional maps, but now several of the distant buildings were wrecked clear down to the foundation. The dragon must have attacked this place recently for folks to be talking about it so openly—perhaps it had even attacked only once, if they had not learned its attack patterns well enough to hide. He’d ridden almost a fortnight from Enbarr to get here, ever since Gilead summoned him back from Arundel to update him on his current mission. “I’ve reports of a demon loose in the Oghma Mountains,” he’d told him, “ransacking towns, stealing the villagers’ valuables, and attacking the weak and foolhardy besides. My scouts confirm it’s a dragon, black-scaled, size fit to block out the sun. We don’t know where it came from, but it’s not part of the Grand Council, so it falls to us now to take it down. Be sure to wear your best gear. Failure is not permitted.”
Yeah, yeah, Caspar snipes at his internal Gilead-voice. For however much his father enjoys parading about in armor in the capital, all it’s ever done for him while traveling is earn him wary looks and wide berths, even when he’s doing nothing more dangerous than stabling his horse. He knows how they think: Even lone armed men coming into an otherwise peaceful town almost never bodes well. But even after years on the job, the way the villagers’ tongues still as they finally register the stranger in their midst still injures him. He’s not some creepy mage come for their scalps—heck, he’s even in plainclothes this time. At least, as plain as he is comfortable with.
Padded chestnut gambeson rustles as he straightens up from Ulric’s flank (he did bring his plate, as instructed, but it’s safely tucked inside two of the young destrier’s saddlebags) and takes a step towards the villagers. There are three of them talking. The youngest-looking one shrinks back as he approaches; Caspar gives them a smile and holds up his hands in placation. (He’s long since learned the value of his smile in distracting from the battle axe and other weaponry he carries.) “Easy, guys; I’m just here for a bit of information,” he says. An innocent tilt of his head. “Heard there was a dragon in these parts. Anyone I can talk to, to learn more?”
The bearded salt-and-pepper man relaxes before his companions, nods at the tavern just behind before tilting his head up. “Ye can talk ta me. I’m Mayor Borjondy. Run the pub jus’ behind ye. Ye from the capital, lad?” he asks. “Come ta slay it fer us?”
“That’s right!” His grin doesn’t falter as he steps forth with an open hand. “Caspar von Bergliez,” he introduces; “part of the Spectrum Imperial Guard. This isn’t my first go-around; rest assured.”
Borjondy nods as he takes Caspar’s hand in his burly, weather-beaten one. “Aye, thought so. Ye sound like a city boy, though me ears tell me you come from the east.” He completes the handshake and then drops his hand, expression pensive. “Been here all me life, I ‘ave, save fer me travelin’ days. We’s a simple folk, spend ‘ar days huntin’ an’ minin’. Don’t wan’ any trouble, unda’stand, but it would seem that trouble’s foond us.”
“Killed me wife an’ brother, it did!” the youngest man interjects. “Woulda killed me too if I ‘ad’nt run!”
Weren’t things like this what the Interspecies Accord was meant to prevent? A moment’s anger shoots through him that a dragon could violate the Accord so callously, but Caspar forces himself to remain calm. “Saving others like them is exactly what I’m here for,” he says, reaching out towards the man’s shoulder by way of reassurance. But the (hopefully) soothing touch does little to soften his glare. “Sounds like you’ve seen the beast, then,” he observes. “What did it look like? Can you remember?”
His question only causes the man to shake harder. “B- Black…” he stammers. “An’ ‘uge! Got paws like oxen, an’ wings kin block the sun! Oh, my poor Greta…”
The grief in his face mirrors in Borjondy’s as he steps closer to calm him down. “It’s killed some a’ my men when they was out huntin’,” he explains; “even tracked ‘em back here an’ wrecked ‘eir homes. ‘twere a livelier place, once, but now all ‘at’s left are the old ones and babes, an’ whoever’s brave enough ta stay an’ protect ‘em. But—it’s not a Hevring beast; that much I kin tell ya fer sure.”
“Not a Hevring drake?” Caspar is vexed. “How do you know that? Aren’t they the only dragons living in these parts?”
“Aye, ye’d think so, but this one’s black as pitch, not green like they say the Hevrings are. Come from the northlands, it did, though me lads here say it’s holed up in the eastern moontens now.”
“Those fookin’ Hevrings…”
All eyes turn to the third villager who until this moment has not said a word.
Heedless of (or perhaps relishing in) the attention he has drawn, the interloper prattles on. “Some a’ the womenfolk say them Hevrings’ll come an’ save us from it, but it seems to me they value their own an’ their kin’s scaly hides more ‘an any ‘coexistence’ they blather on aboot in the capital. Council a’ Seven, me arse,” he mutters viciously. “I bet it’s a council a’ four with three dragon fookers instead.”
Caspar bites back his rising retort. How dare this man lump his father in with the likes of Vestra and Gerth? But arguing will get him nowhere, and there’s still more he needs to know. “Where can I find it?” he asks. “Any known weaknesses?”
“Most times the beast stays close to the moontens, but not the mines. Ye’ll prob’ly find it if ye travel nor’east a’ them, towards Faerghus. Make sure you git ‘im good for me, lad,” the middle villager blurts then, seizing Caspar’s arm with a sudden fervor. “Ain’t no way we kin rely on them scaly twats if this is the sorta shite they pull.”
Borjondy nods sagely. “Agreed.” Then he looks directly at Caspar. “Call me old all ya like, but I kint help but feel as if this is an omen of some sort. Keep yer wits aboot’cha, lad. Somethin’ tells me the Council could fracture over all’a this in the future.”
Fracture? Last he’d heard, there was no evidence of discontent between either human or dragon halves of the Council of Seven. Then again, things were always strange when dragons were involved, so the young huntsman forgoes comment and dips his head in an informal but appreciative bow. “Thanks, mayor,” he says. “I’ll have its head before long—you have my word.”
He would simply have to ask Gilead about all this later.
---
The village of Remire is unsettlingly quiet as he rides into town, and it does nothing for the mounting disquiet of his mind. Only the furtive peek of eyes from behind the tavern window alerts him to the presence of any living souls in the area; and even then, it disappears almost quick enough to be imagined. Perhaps they’re all terrified of the dragon living nearby? Pondering it does not make his odds seem any more favorable.
For all his bravado back in Daevin, he isn’t actually certain how he is going to kill the thing once he sees it, especially without any other huntsmen to back him up. Slaying wyverns is one thing; they are universally weaker and less clever; but dragons? Most successful prior accounts spoke of trickery, of outwitting rather than physically outmatching the beast, and Caspar has much more confidence in the strength of his axe arm than the cunning of his mind.
He frowns. Miring himself in worrisome thoughts borne of too little knowledge would do him no good. Best he simply get out there and search for its lair. Maybe there he could find some clues as to what its goal is, what it wants with the villagers when it never bothered them before. Maybe there’s something he can use against it there, some way to take it down.
(And if he should find the beast inside its lair?)
(He’ll just. Tackle that problem if and when it arises.)

Wild Magic is Awesome
5e homebrew game, im with 2 others and the DM. My dragonborn druid has seen a few animals, but their call to Druidism was a sighting of a dragon of her scale type. She’s also EXTREMELY squishy.
DM: you encounter 4 goblins guarding an encampment.
*everyone rolls for initiative and the chaotic evil bard goes first*
Bard ooc: I use the druid as a human shield. Me ooc: what the hell, man?!
*I want to struggle but I roll very low*
DM: you successfully hold her in front of you. Me ooc: how many polymorphs do I have left? DM: one, why? Me ooc: I want to roll to transform out of panic. DM, sighing: what will you roll? Me ooc: animal handling.
*I roll a Nat 20. The paladin is laughing, standing by as the bard realizes his mistake.*
DM: in a display of power and impossible luck, you polymorph into… *checks my character sheet* a horse sized dragon. Just brilliant. Bard ooc: I call bullshit. I wanna hang on. DM: strength roll. Go. *the dm is so upset*
*bard rolls a 3 and looks at me like* I hate you so much.
Paladin ooc, laughing way too hard and choking on his pizza: oh my gOD-
Long story short I did an intimidation roll on the enemies and they fled. The bard became really racist against dragonborns from then on.

Random oc story
Story time: so the dragon in my icon image is my oc that i’ve been playing around with since approximately 5 ish grade
-when i make up dragon designs one of the things i do is choose a base or reference animal to draw inspiration from in my oc case that animal was originally the salamander do to its mythological association with fire
-with the salamander base the first few ideations of her possessed toxic skin, she was never going to be a big heavy weight dragon, in most the books i have and had read at that point there all ways seemed to be this big focus on the big dragons. That bothered me so kind of the point behind designing her has been what kind of smol dragon could hold its own against a heavy weight tank.
-She also had longer legs because i kinda wanted her to be an effective ground predator as well. The rings that i still draw on her tail to this day are a hold over from the toxic skin idea, referenced from poison dart frogs and blue ringed octopi sometimes they are blue, neon green, or purple depending on how i feel. I just really like bright colours with black. There was also a healing factor as well i debate that ability allot like I dont want her to be too op but then again its not like if i got around to writing a story with her she would know about it until after she losses a limb or something...
-I eventually in high school changed the base animal from salamander to snake because amphibian like skin seemed too fragile. Now i have internal debates about her facial structure because her skin isnt toxic now, she is venomous(neurotoxic) however does she chew, swallow, shred her food do i want her to have an unhinging jaw? An unhinging jaw sounds cool until you realize that those arent the structurally strongest jaws.... Any who she has fangs those have venom thats all i got man *shrugs*
-I’ve taken to adding stuff to the tail for agility reasons cus i figure big dragons aint so mobile in the sky necessarily so she can out maneuver them. I generally like drawing her with a longer than proportionally necessary tail I tell myself that it flattens in flight like a flying snake does. Even though i use viper like snakes as sort of the base most of her muscle gonna be slow glycolytic (red meat yo) so i guess more python ish in that regards tinny but mighty for sustained long term work. wings are going to be in the mid length range eagle like in shape because agility reasons. currently legs are on the shorter end so on the ground she would be more of an ambush predator now, ive decided to make her a competent swimmer. it should be noted that i think of her comparative body size as similar to that of a draft horse but longer. I like to imagine her as being able to dance around the big dragons in flight/combat
-i guess sensory wise it get complicated because im not sure? i like her having a vulture like sense of smell and yes she would do the tongue thing. i dont think she would be a sight predator? i mean there is only so many senses that one can have and specialize in and it all ways seems like sight by the time i get to it gets stuck with the short end of the stick, it would at least be as good as a humans.
-her name is Soren

Here is a list of 14 Creatures I have used and will continue to use in all my writing (and before anyone says anything, yes I based some off older video game characters):
1)Shadow dragon- first off, it's a dragon. Secondly, name means it can travel through shadows, and manipulate tham as it sees fit. Shadow dragons can take on a human form to walk unsuspecting through people. They gravitate to introverts and 'night owls.' These dragons are easily the most complicated as they love hoarding but each one hoards something different. Some hoard books others information, one that meets a character im working, on hoards hats. It takes a lot to make a shadow dragon fight but when they do their mastery of magic and durability make it nearly impossible to kill them.
2)Screenling- this creature is black as night and has the natural ability to feel no pain or fear. They will fight even after losing limbs. Their fingers are all flexible yet hard as steel. They kill mercilessly and emit gutteral screams to lure(or warn) their victims. The only way to kill this creature is to chop it into pieces(not limbs pieces)
3)Mirswith- this creature is a human/snake being. It's arms end in three bladed hands. It's natural ability other then it's incredible speed is disappear. It blends into it's surroundings at all times and is undetectable by most magics. The mirswith society is much like a beehive, every member serves the queen mother. They devour their victims as a group and thus kill whole towns at a time.
4)Blade master- The blade master is an orcish chief. They have trained with their blades the moment they can hold one. Every blade master has killed hundreds of people including their own to earn their title. They have 3 abilities. First, protection: they negate all damage dealt to them for a short time. Second, Shadow copy: the blade master creates 2 copies of himself that look the exact same but deal no damage. They are used to help him escape or confuse his enemies. Third, whirlwind: the blade master produces a second blade and his speed spikes. He is able to deflect attacks and deal attacks twice as quickly as a mirswith and appears as a tornado of steel to his enemies.
5)Death night- this creature is neither human or fully dead. Riding a skeletal horse he has command over dead forces but other than it's magical abilities has as much health and power as a regular human knight. His powers include, Death coil: the knight sends a spectral Skull flying towards his target that instantly kills them. Death pact: this allows him to suck the remaining health out of any undead creature and replenish his own with it. Ritual Dead: this ability raises fresh or recently buried corpses of the dead to fight along side the knight. They die when either the knight falls or their head is separated from their body
6)Night priestess- She is an Elven Huntress that rides a magically enhanced panther. She has the natural ability of evasion. This allows her and her panther to be nearly invisible at night. Her powers include Star arrow starfall and scouts eye. Star arrow brings a star down from the heavens to pierce the enemy with its fiery holiness. Starfall brings the power of thousands of stars to crash down and burn enemies and buildings. And scouts eye sends spectral owls to search through areas with potential threats. The Night Priestess is one with the nature around her. She is most likely to guard the divine beast and is an extreme sexist.
7) Lich- the Lich is one of the most formidable opponent when dealing with death and magic. His natural ability is glide. He floats just above the ground and is thus unaffected by ground attacks. He also is able to move faster than most people or creatures. Being a dead general the Lich cannot be killed by a majority of attack. Cutting his head off or using holy/star magic/attacks can kill him. His powers include frost nova and ice shock. Frost nova: freezes his opponents from the inside out if their health is low. Ice shock: sends waves of blizzard force winds mixed with sharp iceshards towards an enemy. Both attacks can be countered with heat based attacks or abilities. Bundling up in layers helps too. If you happen to survive the attacks you likely will fall to his undead minions.
8)Kodo Beast- this beast is a Komodo Dragon the size of a rhinoceros without the tail. It is extremely touch and can be tamed as a pet by some. It is not picky on who it eats though and thus even as a pet is a dangerous animal. It's main ability is devour. It can use it's ability to eat anything from a small shrub to an elephant whole in one bite. This ability shrinks anything too big down to a manageable size. If killed within 2 minutes the thing it "devoured" can break free and survive but good luck killing it. The hide on this beast is as think as a cinder block. Susceptible to magic
9)Witch Doctor- this is an orc that has ditched his people to pursue magic of all types. He has three abilities but they are all used as support and thus a single witch doctor is only a minor threat. But a single witch doctor is bullshit. The travel in packs of 3 or more. The abilities include bloodlust, growth, and healing ward. Bloodlust allows the target's attack to increase in both speed and power by 10x. This ability stacks. Growth is a fear tactic it increases the physical size of the target by 2x. This ability also stacks. They also weild bowstaffs for when they must fight.
10)Abomination - this creature is sewn together bits of other creatures and animals to create a giant hulking mass of dead monstrosities. Any of its 3-6 arms carry weapons. It's three legs are weak points if you get close enough as it has three heads facing different directions. It is constantly emitting an infectious odor that slowly kills the creatures and beings as well as plant life around it. It is immune to its own poisonous odor and so usually travels with others of its kind or other undead creatures. Good luck killing it as it have 4 hearts spread throughout it's massive body that must be peirced or broken to kill it.
11)Orc - the Orc is a relative well know creature. They travel in "War Band"s or "Tribe"s depending on the circumstance. Most Tribe's have a blade master as a chief and all orcs see strength as the right to rule. They can not be intimidated as the bigger something is the stronger you must be to win. Their fear is of one thing and one thing only: being unworthy of fighting. The greatest insult to an orc is not being fought. War bands consist of 20-25 orcs where the tribe consists of 40+ orcs learn to Smith and fight from the moment they are able to lift a hammer.
12)Gunsmith- nasty little buggers. These creatures are the size of garden gnomes they build random mounted guns out of things they find. If you see one you are likely in the crosshairs of all the others. They travel and build in groups of 50 or more. It is unknown where they come from and most guns they build are also their homes. The guns are camouflaged into the surroundings. The Gunsmiths are mostly simple peaceful creatures. But they are also fiercely territorial and will fight to the last for their lands. Tiny though they are, they have been known to hunt dragons for sport.
13)Night Archer- the knight archers are elves (moonshadow elves only they can turn completely invisible during the night no matter the moon cycle) they use only Bows or Crossbows but often poison their arrows or enchant their arrows. They follow the night priestesses and have the ability to listen to and feel the thoughts of the trees and other nature attuned creatures. They are sworn enemies of undead things and nature means everything to them. Anything living that doesn't threaten nature(trees, grass, creatures that rely on normal everyday flora, etc.) Is their friend and ally. All night archers attempt to be peacekeepers and they number in the thousands and travel as one
14)Ghoul - the Ghoul is the simplest of undead creatures. They are the bodies of the dead brought to life through hate and malice. Any corpse can become a ghoul. The Death Knights lead ghouls around to do their bidding and can use them as both warriors or builders. Each ghoul is a warped version of whoever it was when still alive. Their teeth grow unreasonably long and pointed, their nails do the same. They lose the ability to walk on 2 feet and so must crawl instead but they also increase in speed so as to keep pace with bears in the wild. Ghouls alone are not hard to fight as they are incredibly stupid but in larger numbers or joined with the other dead they become endless waves of enemies. Ghouls can be killed by being broken apart, burned, exercised, or any other means of physical death as well as spiritual; however if their energy is not dispersed they can reform and any ghoul is a cannable and will feed off broken ghouls to regain health. This is why they can create endless waves of themselves... the more people, creatures, or elves that die the more numbers they have.
