You have a lot of artwork set during the 1800s; I was wondering if you could recommend any "bibles" of the 1800s or the Georgian era, please? I have a project that I'm thinking of setting during the period but I'm not sure how to begin my research.

My story will be set in England initially, then go onto India and all over the world

Alright, so— Right off the bat I will admit my research has mainly focused on Finland in any given era, so I haven't read extensively or bookmarked resources as for England (let alone the rest of the world). BUT, I do have some for the purpose of filling in the blanks in the settings, since my country is small and material isn’t in abundance (not like when it comes to the big empires, anyway) sadly this list will be very brief, as I generally deal with my lack of knowledge on any given issue by browsing the web/library and piecing together stuff from multiple sources some of which are very granular (or worse, in FINNISH). I also deal in pictures and dialogue for the most part, which is why majority of this is imagebased.

A BOOK:

The Time Traveller’s Guide to Regency Britain by Ian Mortimer

probably goes into category of a ‘bible’ u mentioned, covers multiple bases as far as setting goes in an easily digestible manner (that list of contents looking pretty good yeah?). Ive the audiobook version and it was a pleasant listen too.

I also appear to have a book by the name The Regency Years by Robert Morrison in my audiobook library, but I have no recollection of actually listening to it. The reviews were good tho.

Been following your journey around the trolley problem and I agree with your position: the trolley problem should not solely be framed in a way where a mythical third and better solution exists. Engaging with hard questions/hypothetical situations where all the outcomes suck is a valuable exercise for developing your own stance and morality, and it recognises that in real life, sometimes things just Do Suck.

I would add though, that as far as my understanding goes, both sides of this argument (aka "Leave the problem untouched" and "Add a secret variable") are valid philosophical perspectives to engage with through the trolley problem. Philosophy at its core is speculating about how people come to certain conclusions and examining what other conclusions there might be (and why those exist).

The trolley problem in this instance becomes a vehicle to discuss different problems and solutions. It is as valuable to discuss a situation where all outcomes are shit in different ways and how this might be solved and why, as it is valuable to consider adding a new variable to the situation. The trolley problem can be expanded to make different arguments and explore different belief sets, and I believe it should be. But equally, its basic premise shouldn't be disregarded.

It's an illustrative device through which you can frame your argument. Through which you explain it. And because of its inherent simplicity, it's capable of portraying a great amount of different problems through slight variations to the premise. And saying things like "What if there was a secret third solution" is as much a thought experiment that can be imposed on it as "What if there wasn't". Both serve different functions and neither is less valuable or correct than the other. Framings that deride either as worse are only simplifying a complex discussion (the complex nature of human morality) into having a one sided "correct take", and aren't what philosophy is about.

I think I would agree with that, yeah, in that the TP can be altered to present a new type of scenario, provided it's acknowledged that the new version is a completely different subject and not like, the secret trolley hack that solves it once and for all lmao. And there's certainly something to be said for scenarios that do have better options.

Like from a big picture perspective, capitalism fans tend to set up scenarios as TPs completely unnecessarily, like "aw well it's too bad we have to sacrifice disabled people for the economy but if we don't everything will collapse" like no, you .. you don't have to do that actually. We should be talking about how to feed everyone rather than who deserves to starve, for instance.

But then on more specific situations, it's like, do I vote in favor of a city policy that would cap rent prices, even tho it's just a temporary fix, or do I refuse to vote for it due to the ballot not including a "abolish rent" option? I would certainly choose to abolish rent if that were an option, but in this moment, is abolishing rent an actual outcome that's on the table? Or will inaction simply result in rent continuing to go up?

Big picture: we should have installed a failsafe on this trolley. Small picture: you can't fix that right now, you can only mitigate the damage the trolley does. You have to make a tough choice in this moment, there's no making it easier, but afterward, you should get together with people and try to build up something strong enough to stop runaway trolleys so that your options aren't so dire next time.

Donna just landed herself a new job. I guess there's that duality in human's fluctuating confidence levels again cause she glibly asks for double but looks ecstatic that it worked

the guy playing the Toymaker IS pulling off the creepy clown act pretty well tho

I really liked that scene between Donna & the Doctor in the infinite cabinet with the Doctor re-evaluating his life choices.

That's another thing that's been missing, that fucking Chibnall didn't get - that the point of him, at the end of the day, is that he's just some guy. Somewhat wiser & tougher than a human, maybe, but still fundamentally just dude with wits & confidence. A trickster, a flawed person trying to do the right thing that through trickery ended up with this fearsome reputation. I used to think of RTD not getting it as much as Moffat did cause he did like overly savior-archetype-like plots sometimes whereas moffat emphasized the 'just a madman with a box' angle, but RTD gets it in this scene where we see the Doctor cringing at his past self for things he couldn't have foreseen & now he doesn't know what to do in a world that doesn't follow predictable rules

Because that's what they don't tell you about getting smarter, wiser or even just older - the price you pay for knowing better today is cringing at the awareness you used to lack. thats very real. you end up thinking you should somehow have known or done better even if you couldnt have.

I dunno what to think about the concept of 'shift to fantasy', i wouldnt have done that & really turned more to harder & concept fanfiction, but i suppose it keeps thinks fresh without being repetitive (they cant keep destroying and un-destroying gallifrey all the time...) & the show has always been the very softest of sci-fi anyway - at leasts its set up in a way that it can be reset again or let future writers pick whatever they want. though i suppose it depends on how its done like, if possible without wholly throwing out humanist values. You can absolutely be a trickster in a fantasy story or fight crazy things with logic; Infinity train did it to great effect. I mean, the classics had far wonkier stuff like actual Vampires & whatnot.

That I could live with. It's potentially deeply interesting that by virtue of getting tangled up in all the timelines the Doctor has in some ways been to many possible futures & possible versions of reality.

Former companions werent affected by the giggle thing cause it was a retroactive change made by the toymaker upon getting free

It's kinda sad that we'll never get to see the battle between the Master and the Toymaker because that must really have been something. Like two Jokers or Phantoms of the Opera fighting.

this is like when Q showed up on the bridge of the enterprise. Only much deadlier. I appreciate that the scene never stops feeling actually menacing.

I like how Mel also comes in to hold his hand, too, she's for realsies. (I guess this is how she makes up for making him drink all that carrot juice)

The "Alons-y" is a niftly little contrast/ bookend with 10s exit

My headcanon is that bi-generation absolutely WAS a myth, but that this is an extension of the whole breach in the logic/edge of reality storyarc being set up here, or really just the Toymaker thinking it would be fun to double them infinitely

I like how the Doctor mocks the Toymaker's fake accent with 'the ball' thing

The advantage with the ball game is, of course, that Fifteen has already seen it. He's fabulous alright.

I don't envy Kate, watching this absurd thing... humanity already got somewhat good at taking Sci-Fi threats on their own, but this they don't have context for. So, the Nobles just deadass adopted the Doctor & Mel. Makes all the sense.

I always thought of Mel & the Doctor's dynamic as sibling-like (as opposed to Peri & the Doctor having a 'tsundere couple' energy & Ace who of course had a teacher/student thing), so I feel vindicated.

Also I appreciate how an older woman who didn't have kids but spent her life traveling & adventuring & doing what she wanted, & then ended up feeling a bit lonely because of it here simply ends up not lonely by finding friends / found family. Cause that's the fucking annoying gotcha they always hurl at you "Oh if you don't have kids & live the life you want you'll be lonely!" As if you can't have friends. Also, plenty of ppl who do have kids wind up lonely because the kids end up hating them.

I'm all for the Doctor catching a break. Very touching, honestly. & he's like actually a point where he wouldn't just run off & get side-tracked or brood on the inevitability of its end. (like he would have when spent those years with River)

Also sets an interesting background for 15 of course, as he'll be coming out of it 'fully rested', in a sense.

So, yeah, I do think I'm looking forward to what 15 will get up to. It was sort of a great way to introduce him in such a way that ppl will instantly like him for how he comforts his past self here.

It's also probably the ideal ending for Donna, cause, much like Rose & Clara she wanted to stay forever, & maybe now that she has a daughter & other responsibilities she won't want the big danger all the time, but the Unit Job & living with the Doctor in a house? That's prolly what she would have wanted.

(I wonder if they'll end up running into Martha & Mickey at her job, since Donna & Martha were buds that time they met. )

I would rather remake those pieces than have them used! I did the doodles in a quick sitting so there are a few things I didn't consider, like his cane being on the wrong side, and his crutches being poorly adjusted.

I would be open to either redrawing them as Isaiah, or taking it as (discounted) commission work to make someone more generic looking since he's pretty distinct lol I'm really interested in contributing tho so it wouldn't be full price by any means!

In addition to posting pictures, I also wanted to talk about how I feel about each main piece.

JSKs/OPs

Row 1: I bought this Frill Ribbon Special Set because it was cheap and I wanted a JSK from Meta. It's not one of my favorite JSKs but I'm having a hard time letting it go. It's my second brand purchase and it's very sentimental to me. I bought Deborah Doll this year and it was well worth the money imo. I love MM and I'm happy I was able to get it at a reasonable price. MM is very rare and expensive & hard to get. This is one of their few pieces that fit without having to do alterations. I'm pretty sure it's due to how long I was searching for it plus how much I paid, but I can't see myself getting rid of this even if I leave lolita. I'd love to buy more because it's one of my favorite cuts, but I'm don't want to pay >600 USD for an MM dress considering my financial position at the moment. This Classical Doll Long OP release from VM was one of the first ones in their extended size range. Since then, they've been doing at least extended size every other release and have also introduced a Size 3 as well. I still prefer the shorter classical dolls that they used to produce, but these longer length dresses are growing on me.

Row 2: The Lace Under Ribbon JSK and IW Maiden's Rose Garden Cross were purchases I made when I was looking for classic main pieces that fit me. They're really cute and def worth it if you love these. But I might let these go. I'm not the biggest fan of front shirring or full shirring and they don't get a lot of wear from me right now. I wouldn't consider myself a sweet lolita now, but when I was first found out about, OTT sweet lolita was everywhere and Daydream Carnival was a coveted print. It's still a dream dress after all these years. I'm happy that I was able to get the 2024 MTO version since it's bigger than the first run of the JSK.

Row 3: I love this A line cut on me and am happy to say that I wear the Noble Satin Marie JSK and the RB Marie Rose JSK frequently, especially in the summer. I think they look really cute blouseless with the neck straps. They're so easy to lose tho ;-;. This IW Violets Inside Mansion JSK was another one of my dream dresses, but I'm very iffy on it. I'm not a fan of the way it looks on me. I really like the print tho. I'm not planning to buy anymore IW dresses due to the way they structure their dresses. However, it's a really cute lightweight dress and doesn't take a lot to make it poofy which makes it perfect for summer. It uses a lovely jacquard (?) fabric which is one of my favorite aspects of IW's prints.

Row 4: VM released their Jewelry Classical Doll, which were 12 different colors for each month of the year. It's such a cute idea and I took advantage of it to get the wine colorway of Classical Doll (Garnet). If I had the funds, I would have loved to get every colorway. I would have also loved to get my birth month, but lighter colors scare me. I'm extremely worried about stains. I love Infanta and wished that these had been my first main pieces instead of white label Taobao dresses. I like the Tangled JSK but it no longer fits and I'll be selling in the future. I'm on the lookout for the Snow White JSK in XL.

Skirts

I don't have much in the way of skirts but I really want more of them, especially Meta fully shirred skirts. I'm not the biggest fan of how the bodices on Meta's JSKs look on me but I love the way their skirts looks on me. The Violets Bouquet shirred skirt was my first brand skirt and I can't see myself ever letting it go either. My preference for brand started with this skirt ( ⸝⸝´꒳`⸝⸝). I wear it pretty frequently and I'm desperately hoping they'll release Antique Bouquet skirts. I love old Winnie the Pooh illustrations, which is why I bought Haenuli's Winnie the Pook skirt. I bought it in a size too large and may sell it in the future. I think I'd prefer the JSK or OP cut.

Aprons

I also don't have much in the way of aprons, but I really like the way they look. Out of the ones I have, I really like the The Black Ribbon's pinafore and love to get the white version. It's pretty sturdy, I love the fabric used for it and the pockets are big enough for a phone and a wallet. Also, the bib part is detachable. Easily one of the best purchases I made in my first year of lolita. I haven't figured out a coord to wear the AtePie apron and might part with it if I can't fit it into my wardrobe. I missed the sale of Herb Garden, but I was able to buy the apron. I'm saving for when I'm finally able to get the JSK.

Wardrobe Post 2024

I enjoy wardrobe posts because it's a way to see what you've bought over the year and how it changes each year. This is my 3rd year in the fashion and I'm happy with how far my wardrobe has come. This year, I ended up looking for more classic pieces and being more intentional with my wardrobe purchases. I also got two dream dresses - Deborah Doll and Daydream Carnival. I don't have the best set up for my 2024 wardrobe post right now so I'm using pictures from lolibrary.

Sorry if you’ve been asked this a lot, but I’ve looked around your blog real hard (probably not hard enough, tho) but I wanted to ask what your commission pricing is? Do you do it piece by piece? Or have you got a set price for stages of completion? Or a rate?

I price commissions on a case-by-case basis, so I don't post a commission sheet with set prices! The rates depend on number of characters, cropping (portrait/half-body/full body), outfit/armor, accessories, and background.

Other things factor in as well: What will the illustration be used for? What's the deadline/timeline for the piece? Do I need to change my rates because of demand? So on and so forth

With regards to stages of completion, I basically only do fully rendered illustrations. I've done *one* sketch for a client, and the other hundred or so commissions were all fully painted pieces.

Folks that email me looking for a commission will get a pretty quick answer if they send a description of what they're looking for, especially if they provide references and a moodboard.

Studying Animals, creatures, and design

My blog in general is not safe for kiddos because I didn't want to cut out that part of my personality as an online persona, but individual posts can be!

Depending on their ages beware setting kids loose on my blog because I swear a lot, draw Sometimes Really Realistic Gore, body horror, and the occasional Fish Tiddies.

Recommendations for further anatomy study!!!!!!

These were super important to me as a young artist, because "draw three circles and add stripes for a tiger!" were completely boring and taught me nothing. But these books were something else entirely.

I recommend buying most of these books rather than borrowing from a library, because it takes a long time to properly chew through them the first time, and there's always concepts that go over your head for a while until you're a stronger artist and can comprehend them.

As for buying books, please buy from a book merchant rather than Amazon if you can afford it. Amazon exploits their workers, including crew for their streaming shows, which are artists like me! Check used book sites like ebay and Thriftbooks for cheap prices if you need those.

Dragonart by Jessica Peffer and the sequel, Dragonart Evolution

She has multiple books for different level artists

This one is great for kids and it illustrates important concepts like anatomy, realism vs stylization, and teaches a ton of important art concepts. This is one of my foundation books as a young artist.

The believable anatomy here is what made me so anal about dragon wings having enough surface area and connecting down the the tail. I haven't read the sequel, but I imagine it's probably even better and higher quality than the first.

I was selftaught until I was 21, so by the time I realized how-to-draw books were a thing, it was hard to find one advanced enough for me.

Drawing Wildlife by J. C. Amberlin

This book is INTENSE, dude. Absolutely perfect for a more advanced artist. It talks about techniques to render fur, how muscles work, why deer are built like tables, etc. It is really intense so if you get it for a child or young teenager they may look at it and then put it aside for a couple years.

I cannot recommend this art enough for people who want to draw animals. it REALLY elevates your technique and skill.

Draw Horses by Lee Hammond

This is a really typical book. Very short, check out from the library type. It's easily interchanged with whatever other horse book is out there, but this is the only one I've read. It was not advanced enough for me after reading Amberlin, but it's a great introduction to the basics of form and shading, as all good art books should be.

Further Study:

Skulls!

As much study as I've done, nothing compared to the leap of improvement as when I started cleaning skulls. Let me tell you, as soon as those kiddos figure out that a jaw hinges behind the eye instead of opening off the bottom like a trap door, they will be unstoppable

Skulls are easy to acquire, actually. I linked to etsy where you can search for replica skulls at affordable prices. Most of the time when you search for replicas, you're get hundred dollar museum-quality pieces, and that's not what we need to learn to draw. As long as they are cast from real bone and have a jaw that separates, they will be useful.

Real skulls are, in my opinion, much better than the replicas, but you need to consider the source when buying. Most bones you can buy are sourced from hunting, fur farms, meat processing, or souvenir shops. You need to know what business you will be supporting with your purchase. All of mine were animals that I found dead, or were given to me by their owners after they died.

Having something you can hold in your hand is super valuable. You just don't get the same kind of understanding from photos.

Museums

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TAKE YOUR KIDS TO MUSEUMS!!!!!

My parents suffered from Have-too-many-kids disease so I can count on one hand the number of zoos we went to, and I think we only went to One science museum. They didn't really care about art so I never went to an art museum until I was 23 and took myself. I had never seen an oil painting in real life before and I started crying right then and there. Please nurture their love of art with everything you have in you. My family didn't care about art and actively discouraged me from pursuing it, yet here I am. Can you imagine how powerful I would be if I had that backup my whole life?

Oh yeah and at science museums some (Like the cal academy of sciences) have sets of skulls, pelts, rocks, and whatever else that are specifically for kids to handle and touch! Ask if yours has any because when I asked I got access to a treasure trove and got to touch an otter skull!

Zoos!

Super important! Grab a sketchbook and go! Make sure everybody works super loose and doesn't fiddle too long or get frustrated. Living animals move, so trying to do something really detailed won't work, it's not like reffing off a photo!

I think I'm coming up on year 3 or 4 with them? And they're holding up nicely. That's basically my only "fancy I purchased new" set though, I think the rest I got as a big box at Walmart or target or something. I recently did find two pieces of vintage Dansk cookware that I bought so if you can keep an eye out for those, they're a really good/cute antique store find. The lids double as trivets!

With antiquing/thrifting I keep an eye out for heritage, staub, Dansk, copper bottomed pans, or le crueset.

I keep hoping food52 drops a sale this weekend but....sigh. anyways their 52 essentials seem nice workhouse pots and pans? They also revived Dansk as a brand.

Wrt to online brands I've heard the Our Place pots/pans are flashy and overpriced (but other things they make are decent even tho the pot is their flagship lol).

Full disclosure I am at the point where I need to invest in kitchen knives because....I have none? And so I'm watching to see best knife sale prices ahaha. I don't have a $$$$ BUT I would rather invest in like, 3 decent knives max than get a huge block of 16 knives I'm not gonna use anyways for slightly cheaper.

I've also heard good things about these "pricer than Walmart but also thankfully not $400 a piece" brands, and I would check to see if they have sales on their site or if other stores that sell them are discounting their stuff.

Oh and cooks illustrated/Americas test kitchen reviews are solid in lieu of me not having your chef sibling. Their video reviews are good. In general I hear lots of good things Abt Misen, Made In, Lodge, Heritage, and All-Clad.

the handle of my saute pan snapped off yesterday while i was moving it to put on the stove so the bowl? of it fell on the ground and is a bit dented. So. I have a few things planned like being a big nerd with Yam, getting clothes with Pistie, and blackmailing Sharkkan offering Sharkkan an deal he can't refuse, playing with Aladdin & co, and of course flirting with Sinbad. I am open to ideas for bonding and fluffy moments.

A Meta on Catra’s Relationships with DT, Scorpia, and Adora

I’m so excited to write this finally ljsdflkj okay so. I’ve been thinking about why the creators would choose to center a whole season around this new character Double Trouble. They drove the plot and played a major role in a really important part of the story, Catra’s redemption. So I wanna think more about the purpose of this character and go deeper into a couple of their scenes with Catra.

tbh Catra and DT’s very first interaction says it all: DT literally takes the form of Scorpia and tells Catra “I’m about to become your new best friend.” As the season goes on, Double Trouble replaces Scorpia as a sort of artificial confidant for Catra. But it blows up in her face and the purpose of the whole thing is to shed light on Catra’s main internal conflict: her desire for love vs. her fear of heartbreak/vulnerability.

In other words, I believe Double Trouble was introduced as a foil to Scorpia. But if we think about how Scorpia is also a foil to Adora, then that means DT is like... a foil to a foil. So they’re not directly associated with Adora but a lot of what they do relates back to her. Yeah there are a lot of layers here lmao but basically what I’m gonna analyze is how Catra’s relationships with these three characters intertwine and build off each other in season 4 to set the stage for Catra’s redemption (and catradora endgame hollaaa)

So in the beginning, Catra and DT both understand their relationship to be a business arrangement. When does that start to change for Catra, and why?

Catra’s History With Betrayal

Just think about Catra’s relationships at the start of s4.. After the portal, Adora had basically severed whatever was left of their relationship, and that was shown to be weighing on Catra all season. Scorpia and Entrapta were the only other people she cared about, but Entrapta betrayed her (first by monopolizing Hordak’s attention then by refusing to open the portal), then Scorpia dared to question her decision to send their friend to die and her presence became a constant reminder of Catra’s guilt. In fact, the mere mention of Entrapta’s name in 4x03 causes Catra to snap and yell at Scorpia “we are not friends!” ... which of course isn’t true. Catra may think Scorpia’s annoying but she confided in her, her loyalty made Catra feel like she could trust her.. and that’s exactly why Catra always tried so hard to push her away. All the betrayals in her life scarred her so deeply that she wanted to avoid emotional intimacy at all costs. I’m about to get Jungian up in this shit bc we see a deep disconnect between Catra’s outward actions (her conscious) and her inner desires (subconscious) this season and it’s this i believe that leads to her breakdown in 4x10. It’s an unsustainable way to live.

Why Catra Trusted Double Trouble

So by 4x04, Catra had sabotaged her only two relationships. She was utterly alone, and vulnerable, and Double Trouble was in the right place at the right time offering their loyalty to her.. so Catra did what any emotionally stable person would do and subconsciously used a hired mercenary to try and fill the growing void in her heart. I don’t think Catra actually cared about DT much at all, like sure they got along and that matters on some level, but I think it’s more that Catra was in a vulnerable place and DT was the only one around.

So why does Catra trust Double Trouble when she won’t let herself trust anyone else? I’ve seen some posts saying it’s because Catra is self-destructive--i.e. she only seeks love from people who won’t give it to her because she doesn’t believe she deserves love--which is super true.. but I think her motivations can be better explained by saying that Catra knew from the start that Double Trouble didn’t really care about her, and that’s why the partnership was attractive to her (at first). She thought it would be safe--no vulnerability, no risk of heartbreak. But the truth is Catra’s just not as disaffected as she wishes she was.

The moment Catra really let her guard down was when Double Trouble saved her from the collapsing building in 4x04. 

can we just!! talk about this scene!!!! the way her voice shakes when she says “saving me” just, oh my god... like what a touchy subject for her, right? Shes spent her whole life resenting how Adora was always trying to “save” her from everything. I’m not sure but I think White Out (2x05) was the only other time Catra thanked someone for saving her life, and she just says “thanks for getting us out of there.” So her use of the word “save” here is special and it illustrates how deeply vulnerable Catra feels this season, and more importantly it’s a sign of character development! It’s no coincidence that the theme of saving is connected between DT, Scorpia, and Adora. It’s leading up to Catra learning to replace her resentment towards Adora with something closer to gratitude. 

But while the scene connects these relationships, it also highlights their differences. After Catra displays an astounding amount of vulnerability with DT, they coolly reply “well, I live to serve... for a price, of course.”

This right here is the first step of Catra’s breakdown. Suppressed desires making themselves known, one half of her heart rebelling against the other. She was pushing away her real friends and finding hollow companionship with someone she thought she wouldn’t get attached to, but it happened anyway.

The difference between Double Trouble and Scorpia must have become glaringly obvious to Catra in that moment. Whereas Scorpia was loyal to Catra out of love, DT was mostly interested in getting paid. And she was surprised by how much that hurt. She fucking hated how much it hurt, you can see it written all over her face. It’s why she fails Scorpia’s little test in 4x06. Because of Double Trouble, Catra’s true desires were threatening to break free, so outwardly she fights against it and acts more resistant than ever to being friends with Scorpia. She castigates her, calls her annoying and incompetent, harsher than we’ve ever seen... but she didn’t expect Scorpia to hit back (we did, tho. Scorpia’s an icon).

In four words Scorpia teaches Catra a hard lesson about what it means to earn someone’s loyalty. She knew she must’ve really fucked up if she somehow managed to push away the most loyal person in all of Etheria. And again the fake nature of Catra’s relationship with Double Trouble provides a reference for her to see why Scorpia’s loyalty, based in love, was so valuable, and why she shouldn’t have taken it for granted. It also relates to Adora because, similar to Scorpia, Adora had been trying so hard these past 3 seasons to connect with Catra, but she refused to forgive her and her behavior eventually forced Adora to cut ties. So Scorpia calling her out pushes Catra towards accepting some personal responsibility for everything that happened with Adora, too. Man there are just.. a ton of implications here.

Then Catra gives Hordak a fun pep talk but really it’s just her self-projecting all over him:

At this point her hateful actions and her goal to conquer Etheria are extremely out of line with her true desires and we can see it’s really affecting her mental state. It wasn’t just one thing or person that caused her breakdown, it was a combination of Adora severing their relationship, and Scorpia’s disappointment in her, and Double Trouble’s indifference towards her. All three of these situations were playing off each other and chipping away at Catra’s carefully crafted armor, revealing a desire to be loved hidden underneath... which she continued to fight against for as long as she could. Adora and Scorpia were playing their roles in helping Catra learn to take responsibility for her life, but those relationships wouldn’t have been so effective had it not been for how they were contrasted with Double Trouble’s indifference. Anyway have I mentioned how amazing and complex this show is????

Catra Loses DT and Scorpia Around the Same Time

4x07 is the last time Catra talks to Double Trouble before they get captured by the rebels. Coincidentally, Catra realizes that Scorpia left her just one episode later, which once again points to a connection between these two characters. From 4x08 to 4x11 Catra is completely alone, feeling like she has lost everyone in her life. It sets the stage for her meltdown in 4x10. But my fave part about Scorpia leaving is how it changes the way Catra thinks about betrayal. 

Even if Scorpia didn’t tell Catra where she was going in the note she left, Catra had to have assumed she was leaving to join the Rebellion because where else would she have gone right? So the two people Catra loves most have now BOTH abandoned her to join the rebellion. I don’t even wanna think about how triggering that betrayal must have been for Catra.. I don’t wanna think about how the next time Catra sees Scorpia she’s going to be a full blown princess with powers and everything, just like what happened with Adora. 

But there’s a key difference between Adora and Scorpia. Catra knows at this point that Adora didn’t want to leave her behind, but she did anyway to pursue some destiny that Catra wasn’t a part of, which left her feeling betrayed. Scorpia, on the other hand--the very definition of ‘loyalty’--left her specifically because Catra pushed her away. Her fear of vulnerability manifested as anger towards someone she refused to admit that she cared about, and it pushed her away.

Once again I think Scorpia is teaching Catra a lesson about taking responsibility for some of the shit in her life. It’s a privilege that Adora lost after being careless with Catra’s trust, and thus Scorpia was the only one in a position to reach Catra and help her. But I think that the things Catra learned from Scorpia are going to play back into her relationship with Adora and allow them to reconcile (when Adora deals with her own issues too).

We can also say a little about how Double Trouble’s betrayal contrasts with Scorpia’s and Adora’s. I think their complete emotional detachment is the perfect frame of reference for Catra to be able to acknowledge that even though Scorpia and Adora left her, they DID love her, and they never stopped trying to reach out to her--at least, not until Catra crossed a line with both of them. At some point, Catra went from being justified in her feelings of betrayal to overdoing it, placing too much blame where it didn’t belong and closing the door to forgiveness. So I think that’s the role that Double Trouble played there, helping Catra see that difference. Like even if someone leaves you, hurts you, it doesn’t always mean they don’t love you. Relationships take work and understanding and forgiveness and you have to learn how to handle that or you’ll always be alone. Scorpia’s the pure embodiment of that lesson, and she’s lighting the way for Catra to navigate the much more nebulous waters of her grudge against Adora.

Double Trouble’s Betrayal

So now Catra is feeling abandoned by Scorpia and Double Trouble (her only friends) and we see the disconnect between what’s in her heart and the front she’s been putting on come to a head in 4x10 when she has that meltdown. She’s kind of losing it because her fear and heartbreak are driving her down a path that she doesn’t actually want. It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion. In 4x12 she continues to hold on desperately to the idea that beating Adora will make her happy, because at this point she doesn’t see any way to turn the car around.

There’s an absolutely fantastic scene early in 4x12 that sets up Double Trouble’s betrayal beautifully, like really it’s a masterpiece. Catra’s childhood friends walk in on her in the locker room and they’re laughing and joking around and for a second it’s like... Catra longs to be a part of that again.. To have friends, to be happy. But then Kyle accidentally kicks one of Scorpia’s old doodles (a painful reminder that she’s gone) and Catra freaks out and attacks them. Kyle’s like “we used to be friends, why are you treating us like this?” So she lets them leave, feeling alone and miserable, and THAT’S when Double Trouble waltzes in... having had just made a deal with Glimmer to double cross Catra.

God it hurts so much. The contrast between her pushing away Scorpia and her real friends, and then her childlike relief upon seeing the person who just sold her out.

This scene gives me fucking chills with the nightmare-ish music and everything.. It’s like, at this point DT is just fucking with her, they’ve already got Catra figured out. This face touch is so cruel and fits with the show’s motif of manipulative affection, too. For me it felt very disconcerting to see Catra like this... unaware that she’s been defeated yet she’s so emotionally vulnerable here, she’s like putty in Double Trouble’s hands. Scorpia leaving cracked her open and, as they’re the last person left standing with Catra’s trust, Double Trouble’s in the perfect position to come in and break her.

So the next episode 4x13 has that crazy scene where Double Trouble totally obliterates Catra and I’m not even gonna talk about it lmao because yall have already done a great job analyzing it. But I do wanna draw attention to the fact that this is the only thing she says in this whole scene:

Can you believe that’s what mattered the most to her in that moment? Not that literally everything she had been working for for the past 4 seasons had just turned to dust before her eyes, but the fact that this random mercenary she hired betrayed her. And there was no anger at all, just... heartbreak.

And then look at what she says to Glimmer afterwards (setting aside the fact that Catra is basically giving up on life...) she says nothing about the war, nothing about winning or revenge. The only thing she’s thinking about is how lonely she feels.

So by the end of Season 4, I think Catra did finally figure out what she truly wanted in life. She didn’t want to be on top just for power’s sake, she wanted people to respect her, to love her, so that no one could hurt her anymore. But she was so obsessed with winning that she ended up losing everyone’s respect. Wow haha if only she could get a second chance to earn it back the right way.... like say if, idk, she was trapped in space jail and forced to team up with her sworn enemy to survive and they came out best friends or something <:)

To sum up, Double Trouble’s role in Season 4 was to break Catra’s mask and force her to consider what she truly wants. I think their betrayal taught Catra to really appreciate what a terrible mistake she made in pushing Scorpia and Adora away. It taught her the difference between someone leaving her because they don’t care about her, and someone cutting ties with her even though they do care for her very deeply, they just couldn’t take Catra treating them like crap anymore. It showed her that what Adora did was nothing like what DT did. That’s what a betrayal feels like when the person doesn’t care about you. Someone who doesn’t care about you isn’t going to beg for your forgiveness for 3 seasons and risk being obliterated from existence just to get you back.

But the real beauty of season 4 was how Catra hitting rock bottom had almost nothing to do with Adora. With the help of other friends Catra has begun to find her own reasons to change, she’s acknowledging her guilt and heartbreak and discovering the person she wants to become. She’s learning to take responsibility instead of just blaming other people. And this character development had nothing to do with romance, just like how Adora breaking free of her destiny and learning to let go of control had little to do with Catra. I love the different perspectives on love that they give us with Catra, Adora, and Scorpia. I love how this show takes the “love conquers all” trope and subverts it, saying that sometimes.. love breaks you. Sometimes it’s not enough. Sometimes it’s used as a weapon. Sometimes you have to let go of people you love, but it opens up space for you to figure out who you are and what you want and to conquer your own demons. You’ll come out the other side with a better understanding of what real, healthy love is supposed to look like. And maybe in the end, the love you always sought will find you again, in its own time, in its own way. 💘

These are all amazing ideas!!! It's so much and I have no idea what to do with it, so I'm gonna go through my thoughts on everything (and a few ideas I've had) and see if I come out with more of a concept

Yes, love it. It's been suggested to me before, and I think it would be within my grasp really. And it'd be an interesting thing to explore designing. I've never really used stickers on my own stuff before so I dunno if my designs will be spot on to start

I would love to make buttons! That'll depend on finding the equipment I'd need, but it would be cool

Set of postcards

Yes! Very simple to accomplish, really. I also have this letter someone sent me once that's "reusable" in that there's a section inside that you can slip paper in and out of. I've always loved the design and would really enjoy doing something similar

Notepads

There are notepad type things with my art on the colour are already on redbubble (altho I don't upload often enough) so I don't feel a need to run that myself

However, designing little pages to put inside a planner could be cute. I'd want to check pricing options on that, cos it could get to be more than its worth

A similar thing I could do would be to make little stamps of my designs and do the printing myself. I've done some very good linocuts before, so that could be a cool direction. But it's moving away from the showcase of my art over a year idea, but might be something

A zine

Not sure i could pull that off. I like to adjust fandom art to something subtle and unrecognisable by the layman for my calendars so my family and friends can enjoy it as much as a good omens fan. I don't know how if do that with a short story

It is also close to an art book, and I'm just not that into myself tbh

My thought here is I can do a different useful thing every year. So I can have an address book I can sell forever more! Cos you don't need a new one every year, but once is cool!

I'm leaning towards this year's November effort being a mishmash of new little things, cos those sound nice. Like, stickers, postcards, maybe badges, a short comic print, maybe a little notepad, a poster? That vibe would be nice.

Well, I only printed it, I didn't publish it or anything as that would be a copyright nightmare xD

I used the website epubli to print it, and the process to find that one was... A journey xD most printing sites are either expensive af if you don't want to buy in bulk or don't let you preview how it will look printed or don't let you design your own cover or don't have any individual settings or or or... So I was very happy when I found that one!

Howeverrr then at first it didn't read my pdf file correctly, showed it in fucking Wingdings instead of actual letters xD took a while until I figured out that I had to export the file as a pdf from Word instead of printing it to pdf... Still don't know why that was necessary.

Then I uploaded it and went through all the pages to only select the ones with pictures to print in colour, and then I (thankfully) saved in between that and doing the rest of the setting edits: paperback, thick-ish but cheap pages, this weird book format, etc... But I didn't save in-between that and buying it, and apparently the website hadn't registered these settings yet! Even tho my price that it showed then at checkout was the correct one!!!, the money they took was for the more expensice default settings hardcover, A5 & shiny photo pages... And they didn't believe me when I told them that wasn't what I bought, even tho I had a screenshot! Should be illegal, fix the damn website fuckers. Anyways I didn't keep fighting them on it bc it's just a few € and now I do have a very pretty hardcover version of the book (with slightly too big letters bc the format's wrong & with shiny photo pages lmfao, but at least the art is pretty on those?)... So, quite a ride!

For the cover art I just asked the artists whether I could use them, and the illustrations are actually made for the story by my friend @jackwolfskid <3<3 loved our collaboration, and she's also getting a print of the book!

I've only seen maybe 3 posted online & I have a copy of a SpeedJona doujin but aside from those I haven't come across any. Is it like a rare pairing or something? I thought they were fairly popular

It isn’t weird at all, anon! All the opposite actually, cause I love getting asks even if i'm not always around or it sometimes takes me a hot minute to get to them gfjhkjh

This is gonna be long and probs gonna have bits that might sound rant-ish to some, but I hope that’s alright! :'D

For starters, sadly, jonawagon/jonaspeed/speedjona or however you call the ship is quite an underrated ship. This has to do partly with the wrong perceptions some folks have built around it and around the characters as well (that them both and the couple itself are the epitome of "purity" and "innocence", sometimes even labelling them as "boring" as a result even though both characters are far from that, that "it could only be a one-sided thing" on Spw's end despite both showing and sharing a certain bond/closeness towards each other -closeness that sometimes Jonathan didn't show towards anyone else-, etc), partly because of the many timeskips in PB and all the scenes the anime cut out and people wrongly assuming that the main events happened in the span of a few days and thus people dropping the ball on the ship/characters when Jonathan and Speedwagon actually knew each other for as long -sometimes even longer- than other more popular characters/ships in jjba did, partly because neither Jonathan or Speedwagon are as popular as other characters in the franchise as a whole, and also partly because, as sad as it is to say this, the ship lacks a LOT of support, especially from it's own fanbase. While jonawagon is a popular and well liked ship overall (in the sense that even general fans who don't care much about shipping, or those who are still on the fence about mlm ships, or those who just don't actively ship jonawagon actually like and support the ship or the idea of it upon seeing the actual dynamics between the characters and their potential and the fact that the ship can actually coexist with jonaeri without altering the characters/making them ooc, nor altering the story and so on), it still lacks a lot of support from it's fans. I often see most other ships/characters get lots of reblogs and exposure from their fans on literally any and all platforms, helping those ships/characters reach new audiences and gaining more popularity and drawing interest from potential new fans, while jonawagon stuff as well as solo Jonathan or Speedwagon stuff usually only get likes and a few reblogs at most from their fans, which is nice and all, but it doesn't give the artists/writers any exposure nor get those works or the ship any farther than that and just keeps them within part of the already existing fanbase at best, which often times makes the artists/content creators lose interest in continuing to create stuff for the ship/characters. This is also why I always strongly ask -almost beg at this point ngl- for people to support the artists/writers/etc via reblogs!! The ship having a bunch of different names also might have an impact on all of this, as it's not always as 'easy' to tag/find contents if you don't know how to tag/search for it. Jonawagon (normally used in the western parts of the fandom), JonaSpeed/SpeedJona (Western version of the ship's most popular names in Japanese: ジョナスピ/スピジョナ or JonaSupi/SupiJona respectively], SpeedStar (a name that became a bit more popular more recently after a mini jonawagon event in 2019), being the most common ones afaik, asides from the standard JonathanxSpeedwagon/SpeedwagonxJonathan ie and others. In short, Jonathan and Speedwagon as well as jonawagon are quite well liked and even popular to an extent, but they lack a massive amount of support from the fans, which also usually translates into artists and content creators for this ship losing interest in continuing to create new material for it and thus end up not making any more contents.

In regards to doujinshi more specifically, I’m a bit disconnected when it comes to Jojo doujinshi in general, but it seems to be a bit like that for most of the non "crazy popular" Jojo ships if you ask me, which is kinda normal considering the massive amount of characters in the whole series. Putting my experience as example, if it helps, I used to collect doujinshi from one of my previous fandoms, which had a shit ton of them for plenty of it’s ships and it was somewhat easy to acquire hard copies of despite it being an “old anime” basically while most Jojo doujinshi (especially anything that is not parts 3, 4 and 5) seems to be a bit hard to come across regardless of the ship(s) in them, even in auction sites or places like pixiv that sell digital copies if the author puts them up on sale, which is understandable since the aforementioned parts are some of the most popular parts in Japan, where most doujinshi is created, and thus take most of the fandom's interest -authors’ and readers’ alike-, as well as the hype for parts like Phantom Blood being long dead (with it being dead/dormant since the original airing of the anime ended in 2013, and it coming back ocassionally whenever there's a 'special' re-airing of PB in Japan or when events such as the Joestar Radio take place), so maybe my parameters on the whole subject are somewhat disproportionate?

This is also gonna sound all boomer-like, but I’ve also noticed, or it seems to me at least (still in comparison to the doujinshi from my previous fandom), that doujinshi books as we knew them aren’t /as/ common nowadays as they used to be a while back. Even the works themselves don’t seem to be much that way either. For example, doujinshi anthologies used to be a big thing a while back and, while they still exist, they don’t seem to be too common anymore (these worked as "promo books" of sorts for all the artists featured and they also helped lesser known/popular artists and ships to get some exposure to newer audiences). Nowadays such thing still exists, and I actually recall seeing a Jonaspeed/Speedjona anthology being made “recently” (recently as in 2019, if I’m not mistaken? it was published and sold during the mini Jonaspeed event they held at a Jojo con in Japan that year), but they aren’t nearly as common as they used to be, since now most artists can post any samples they want (much more reduced tho, cause you normally get a few pages instead of a full mini story) in places like Twitter or Pixiv. And it’s kinda the same with regular doujinshi. Before, most doujinkas had to publish a book in order to get their stuff out and get some exposure, so they were always working on new stories and making new books to sell and promoing their stuff, sometimes one after the other and even creating multi-volume stories in some cases. Now, thanks to how "easy" it is to get some exposure on social media, it’s much more common to see doujinkas for any ships/characters making short stories (1-4 pages, sometimes more) or just 1 page illustrations instead and posting them on their social media every now and then as a promo for their works. They also still make and sell their books (a few jonawagon artists on twitter do, at least), and these short stories/illustrations serve to boost their works instead, which is not a complain at all cause I think it's amazing tbqh! But this also translates into less stories/doujinshi being created as many of these artists often opt for leaving those stories that years ago would have been their own book or a mini story in a book as a prompt or a short story only.

As for actual jonawagon doujinshi, while it is not as common as say pt 3 doujinshi, there is quite a bunch of it. Some date from 2012-2013 (when the PB anime was originally aired), some are much older than that and some others are much more recent (as there are still some active jonawagon doujinkas around). There are also "fanfic books" that are also considered doujinshi and that seem to be a thing sometimes, but these contain little to no art at all and are usually written 100% in Japanese. The problem here is that not many of them have been scanlated/translated yet, sometimes because they aren't easy to find on sale online, sometimes because re-sellers who do have them set high prices for them plus shipping costs, sometimes because the artists/online shops won't sell stuff overseas, sometimes because those who do own doujinshi copies don't always know how to properly share them (since scanning a doujinshi in high or decent quality without destroying the book can be hard af) among other reasons.

All that said, there is a bunch of jonawagon doujinshi that has been scanned and is available online! but it can be tricky to get sometimes due to the different names this ship can go by and because of the "translations" of said names into different languages (as some doujinshi can only be found in Chinese sites, or Russian ones, and so on for example, so it can take some serious time to figure that out and have a successful search).

In all honesty, anon, I'm a dumdum and I had never thought about doing so in a more public manner until now, since I've already shared my entire jonawagon collection (pics, doujins, etc) with friends who have requested it more privately, but I can upload the doujins I have scans of if anyone's interested?? (I’d post the links where I found most of them but since my hd is pretty much dead and I can’t access Windows or my windows/mozilla profile, I’ve p much lost all my old bookmarks). They were only like... 8 last time I checked (9/10 if you count the Japanese and English versions of the "Joestarsaaaaan" one), but it's something :D Just be aware that some of them are nsfw! and that a couple are either part of a book that has stories from other ships in them (I only have the jonawagon parts tho) or contain other ships implied or openly shown in the jonawagon story.

I also have about 4 more, but the scanlator of one of them openly requested for the file to not be reuploaded, so Idk if it'd be alright to share it? (and they also deactivated their blog, so there's no way to ask them for permission). The other 3 are scans a friend sent to me of their own doujinshi copies, so I also don't know if it would be okay for me to post them??
