Had a terrific Margherita pizza during #happyhour at @fireandstonepdx yesterday. I think the Margherita may be my fave round style (Grandma rules for square pies) of all the pizzas. This one had a really good crust - I love how the dough bakes in a wood-fired oven. Sauce had a nice tang, too. I've eaten a lot of pizza in Portland lately - Blind Onion, Apizza Scholls, Otto, Red Sauce. I stopped by @180pdx tonight for their xurro ice cream sandwich, and it did not disappoint. Two fresh churros are made into little wheels and @saltandstraw ice cream is put in between them. The churros are still warm and the ice cream cold, so it makes for a delicious mess. Spring #salad this evening at @tabortavern - arugula, chèvre, roasted garlic, onions, and blackberries dressed in a honey sorrel vinaigrette. Perfect for a hot day like we had today (high of 105F). (at Tabor Tavern)

This morning at #fleurdeliscafe they are offering a #biscuitsandgravy special, so we gave it a try - and loved it! This is a very straightforward version, just the way we like it - a creamy gravy with plenty of sausage, savory but not overly salty. Biscuits were likely made in-house at the bakery and stood up well to the heaping amounts of gravy. Scrambled eggs rounded out the plate and they were simple, nothing elaborate. Finally made it over to @blindonionpizza today and I'm very happy we did. There was a lot to like about this pizza, especially the crust. It was not a NY-style pizza at all, and had a softer, slightly sweeter dough. Turns out they use a type of sourdough bagel dough! I absolutely loved the flavor and texture, as it was very comforting, for use of a better word. They also create a decorative edge to the crust that is visually pleasing. The pizza tasted very west coast - not a negative, in my book. I love all these different kinds of crusts I've encountered in Portland. As for rest of tonight's pizza, the cheese was wonderfully melty, the pepperoni appropriately salty but not overly greasy, and the sausage had a bit of a spicy kick that was much appreciated. Overhead shot of the chocolate tres leches cake at @altobajopdx - along with the cake is a quenelle of horchata ice cream, meringue shards, crumbled brownie, and a thin layer of chocolate mousse. It was not overly sweet, which I liked, there was a tiny bit of peppery heat, and the ice cream added some cool balance. Probably the most unexpected delight at this morning's @feastportland fun-sized event, Because Breakfast, was this glass of bubble tea. I've been drinking bubble tea since the 90s and my love for it has never waned. This is from @teabar - iced vanilla rose tea (brewed then reduced with sugar into a syrup and then reconstituted) with tapioca balls (boba) they cook themselves. The boba had a perfect texture and the tea was a knockout - it was strong but not overwhelming or bitter, with a wonderful light floral background note from the rose petal in the tea blend. The whole thing was a joy to drink. These donuts from @noladoughnuts were a hit at the @feastportland Grand Tasting! There's an apple fritter, salted double chocolate, and Cajun maple bacon. The fritter was my favorite. It's been quite a busy week with lots of editing and writing work, some impromptu deadlines, and mostly 10-12 hour days. Part of today's work involved mailing off galleys and a walk to the bank, and since we were out around lunchtime, a trip to nearby @killerburger was in order. On our way to spend the morning in Washington Park, we stopped in at Fleur de Lis and picked up this pumpkin muffin. As you can see, the top is coated with pepitas, and the muffin itself was very good. It had a sort of molasses caramel flavor and because it was still warm, the little bits of dried fruit (I think they were currants) sort of melted into these nuggets of sweetness. It was also quite moist from the oil; the orangey color made me wonder if they used roasted pumpkin oil. This is a mint chip shake with a gorgeous ruffled topper of whipped cream, from @bjsicecream. It's the milkshake underneath that is the real star, though - very thick, creamy, and full of chocolate chips. I think there may have been some actual mint chips, too. Love the green color, too.
