My big brother Chis got a couple of clones last year in our #BHSbonsaipots, but one died. He then realized redwood seedlings were growing under the redwoods in his backyard, so potted one alone and three together to make up for the loss. He was was glowing with pride when he showed me while misting his trees with a water bottle. He also made delicious burgers with homemade pickles! My 30 year old privet from Portland, collected in 2011, has 2 trees next to each other. I could pull them apart or cut the left tall one to make a short twin trunk oak style or this, a hill top style twin trunk with a tall main canopy and a slanted shorter stumpier tree in back. I have yet to truely express my admiration for pine trees. My love for pines root back to when I was 5, when we moved from N.O. to Abita Springs. I retreated from a house full over girls and city streets to the glistening green and brown needles of the shady creek banks. I was one with nature. Cooking fish over fires, building treehouses, and making wigwams were a regular activity. For 3 years the trees shielded me from the harsh realities of the early 80's. Then we moved to Slidell when I was 8 and I started skateboarding, but I was growing a succulent I had won at the town hall bingo night in Abita. At our new house I found little jade growing out our patio brinks. I instinctually dug it up. About 3 years later and after a couple more moves, I found myself searching cow fields for for fishing holes and bonsai hunting for stunted invasive shrubs... Unfortunately the couple pine seedlings I purchased in 2010 with my redwoods didn't make it through all the moves I've since made. I moved so much in life, I waited for a time of feeling centered to start surrounding myself with pine trees again. This one I've watched grow beside a rock in my sisters yard for a couple years. I finally found myself saying it's time. It'll symbolize a time of personal growth, gratitude and upcoming change. I'll commit to growing it till my days are done. Did you know that #bonsai isn't a type of #tree? Mr. Miyagi was growing creeping nana juniper as bonsai trees. Bonsai translates in english to "potted plant" or "tree in tray", depending on who you're talking to. What actually qualifies each different type of tree as a bonsai? That depends on what characteristics of a tree are presented to the observer or contest judges. It can involve many levels of craftsmanship and traditional aesthetics incorporated into the overall design and presentation. This is a #douglasfir tree, it's not in a bonsai pot. It doesn't have mature, finely tuned branches, so its not officially a bonsai. Most would say it's #prebonsai, but to me it's a bonsai as long as my intent is to #grow it into a bonsai.
