okay so the magicians was a tv show about a bunch of post grads learning magic in magic university then discovering that the fantasy world from a kids book series was actually real and the Beast of that world was out to get them. WHO GIVES A FUCK. the crazy people were focused on the relationship btwn main character quentin coldwater (depressed, heart on his sleeve, surprise sex maniac who is new to magic and loves those books) and gay best friend eliot waugh (substance addicted (big surprise!!), gay trauma, named after evelyn waugh oh you know…) they form a friendship and it’s weirdly touchy and close. eliot keeps trying to seduce quentin but it’s never serious. i dont even think quentin notices. anyone remember the “lets not talk” scene? he was about to fuck that sad man. anyway this tension was actually fulfilled by the end of the 1st season with a drunk threesome including the two and their best friend margo. they at least kiss and cuddle and MAYBE sucked dick if the ghost of his girlfriend who haunts him later is to be believed (which i do #cockinhismouthsunday).

at this time articles that were like “THIS SIFI SERIES IS PROUDLY BISEXUAL” were coming out which. lol. lmfao! quentin never had any sort of queer identity. not even a hint of it. the homophobia of the show started with the regurgitation of the “sad drunk lonely sex-crazed” gay man trope with eliot, then the “everyone is fluid but no one actually has same sex attraction” trope, THEN by sidelining and killing off almost every gay or trans character, THEN THE QUENTIN THING. and the quentin thing turned people insane. let’s see why.

so after the threesome, eliot and quentin continue having a good friendship. there is some tension that isnt present with margo which sure is a choice… but it is resolved by a heartfelt crowning ceremony nd hug. oh theyre kings of the magic land now btw. eliot and q are pretty much separate from this point on xcept for certain episodes/moments. it is strange they dont have any storylines together. but love finds a way. at some point a version of eliot sacrifies himself for quentin. if u look at the scene it is on instinct it is crazy. then they reunite at the end of s2 but it’s all business really. the show was really involved w its nonsense plot.

anyway season 3. hahaha. so like i said theyre separate most of the show past s1. this is true in this season xcept for episodes 305 and 313 (with some notable moments in between). the plot of this season is that they have to go on quests to collect keys. the creature that gives eliot this plot calls quentin his “brother of the heart”. ok! when they see each other for the first time in a while in 304, they hug in a very sweet way :) look at this photo from bts during that scene :) i have it framed

after a series of other quests, 305 turns out to be the Eliot and Quentin quest! finally a story with the two! the quest is for the “time key”, which is fabled to be given to whoever solves the mosaic puzzle in fillory (magic world). the puzzle? they have to arrange 100s of tiles in a way that depicts “the beauty of all life”. quentin is very excited about it. eliot is happy to hear him infodump. they eventually get pushed into fillory to solve the mosaic. turns out they were also sent DECADES in the past. there might have been a way out but they were dead-set on solving the mosaic and getting their key. so they get to work. they live in a cottage attached to the mosaic and they spend hours, days, months on it. just the two of them and the mosaic. this episode is called “a life in a day” which is so perfect you wonder why the writing couldnt be that good within the show.

at the 1 year anniversary, quentin kisses eliot. and eliot kisses him back. and you wonder woah what does this mean?! well keep wondering girl because this tv show does not care to explore any of that. it chugs on and eliot and q fight about “living their lives there” and quentin gets a Wife and has a child with her and then she DIES (leaving her as a narrative incubator rather than an actual character, which is very in line with the sexism of the show). and they grow up and decades pass and the child grows old enough to leave and it seems eliot co-parented him but (again) the tv show doesnt care to show you that. and this whole time theyre working on the mosaic. years and years. eventually they grow old. it’s just the two of them. until eliot dies. quentin goes to bury him in the mosaic plot and he finds a special little tile. he places it in the mosaic. he gets the key. the puzzle is solved. “the beauty of all life”. but quentin is alone. his life companion is gone. and that’s the last we see of him.

we go back in time til before they enter fillory. their friend stops them and she has the key through time shenanigans and they never live that timeline. UNTIL!!!!! they do. they remember it all. what does decades (50 yrs btw) of living happily together mean for them?!? FUCK ALL APPARENTLY!!!! because the next episode (306 if yr keep track) they mention it ONCE AND NEVER AGAIN. and there is so much beneath the surface with the looks and the line that mentions it (“go be life partners with someone else” eliot says jokingly in a manner that shouldve been the catalyst to quentin’s magic-induced suicide spiral later that episode).

ok quentin does mention it once more to his dying dad. but nothing about his Male Life Partner Of Fifty Years. Nothing. they dont even talk about it with their best friends, leading one to believe they just kept it a secret . which. okay.

okay. so theyre apart til the last episode of the season. and quentin decides to sacrifice himself by locking himself in a cage with a monster for all of eternity. he says the quest prepared him for it which is yikesss. eliot refuses. but quentin insists. they travel to the prison (he gets back together with his gf during this trip btw they had been apart that season after some shit. one of their worst writing decisions i hate this stupid ass cockroach relationship). quentin almost exchanges himself. then eliot shoots the monster. dooming them all.

so the monster doesnt die. instead he possesses eliot. and that becomes the story for season 4. at first quentin and co think eliot is dead. and it’s devastating lol. an interesting thing is that the monster was so. touchy with quentin. unbearably so. it’s such a perverse reflection of eliot’s touch. which is sorta pointed out by quentin in this quote (paraphrase) “i know it’s not eliot. but he has his face and his eyes…”

anyhow 405. hahahahahaha. so this episode it’s revealed eliot is alive but trapped in his own head. and to get out for a moment and tell his friends he’s alive, he needs to confront his most terrible most shameful memory. the whole episode is him trying to figure out what it is. meanwhile, quentin and co are setting up a plan to kill the monster. and quentin breaks up with his gf (lol). in a deleted scene that WAS shown in promo they argue about the monster. and quentin says “im team eliot”. lol

anyhow, eliot’s hit a dead end. he cant figure the worst thing that’s happened in his life. then his memory of quentin (theyve been hangin out) says he’ll “sacrifice” himself if he had to. eliot smiles and says “i know youre just a memory… but youre a very generous one.” and quentin says— (im reciting this from memory btw all of this has been from 4 years of NON STOP thinking about it) quentin says “well you sacrifice for the people you love” and he gives eliot a VERY pointed look. and then it dawns on eliot. and the guilt is instantly palpable.

hahahahha. hahaha. hahahahahaha. okay so eliot goes to the memory he knows is the worst thing he’s ever done. his most traumatic memory, after a lifetime of violent homophobia and bad choices. the person possessed before him described this memory as being “the day he left home”.

the memory? the day they remembered their past lives. did it happen? fifty years. it happened.

theyre sat under a wedding arch (that was the b plot of the episode lol). it’s beautiful. eliot watches the memory play out, standing in front of the seated figures. the guilt. the guilt.

outside, the tension is building. the plan to kill the monster is in motion. quentin has to coax him to a certain spot. he has to look at him as he kills his best friend.

eliot doesnt know this but he gets anxious watching it play out. there is a certainty that this is it. the first time viewer has no idea whats going on. we never saw the direct aftermath of them remembering. we always assumed there wasnt anything.

well a year after 305 aired, a yr after thinking THAT WAS IT, they recontextualize Everything.

it is worth saying here that in the promo interviews leading up to season 4, quentin’s and eliot’s actors were sussing it UP. quentin’s at some point talks on q’s queerness, saying it was the one aspect of his life he didnt feel anxious about.

what happens is that quentin asks eliot for a relationship. remember how it was quentin who first kissed eliot? it happens again. heart on his fucking sleeve. i can recite this scene pretty well so im going to fucking do it:

did it happen? fifty years. it happened. it was sort of beautiful. it really was. i know this is gonna sound dumb but … us. i mean we work. we know it cause we lived it. who gets that proof of concept? (eliot smiles uneasily) we just got injected with fifty years of memories so i get that youre not thinking clearly. no im just saying… what if we gave it a shot, would that be so crazy? (eliot looks down, worried and thoughtful. quentin smiles RADIANTLY it is BLINDING) why the fuck not?

editors opinion: quentin is such a beautiful person. to be so truthful about something so scary is unthinkable. especially in context of him being so hopelessly and quietly in love his childhood best friend, and his whirlwind romance with previously mentioned gf, and all the tragedy he endured with these two. but this is someone who loves with his whole heart. what was he supposed to do? contain it?

then eliot hardens.

i know you and you arent… whats the matter? dont be naive it matters. (pause) q i love you but… that isnt me and that definitely isnt you. not when we have a choice. (quentin looks away. he wipes his eye) oh. okay. sorry.

and silence. the real eliot, the eliot who isnt the memory, looks on. tired and angry, he speaks to himself:

what the hell is wrong with you? what the hell are you doing? someone Good and True… Loves you. yeah it was a little crazy but you knew. you knew this truly mattered. and you just SNUFFED IT OUT.

then he looks to the memory of quentin. soft as the clouds:

q. im sorry. i was afraid. and when im afraid i run away.

then he kisses him. and he hits you with the thesis of the episode:

if i ever get out of here q… know that when im braver it cause i learned it from you.

thats his most traumatic memory. he is granted passage to consciousness. what is the first thing he sees? quentin. the real quentin.

q? (smiles) q (laughs) it’s me. it’s eliot. ok come on no games. it’s eliot. i said no games. (eliot looks around, worried as all hell) fifty years (he walks towards q) who gets proof of concept like that? what? peaches and plums motherfucker (this is the symbol to their mosaic life) im alive in here. (eyes as wide as saucers, heart in his throat) eliot…

and he ruins their plans of killing the monster. “eliot’s alive.”

then the episodes keep rolling. “eliot eliot eliot. why do you care so much about him?” “because i do.” and “wow i love that plan. except the part where it doesnt save eliot.” quentin gets back with his gf for reasons only the devil knows. but fine ok whatever quentin and eliot will HAVE to talk post-saving. even if the writers ignore it once more they have some kind of relationship. and they do save eliot in the finale! you know who they dont save? lmfao

quentin dies. in a manner that many including myself found weird and unsatisfactory and suicidal. and he never gets to know how eliot feels. never. he’s just gone. their story means nothing 💯

editors note: this ending broke me. i was using the show as a depression crutch, so a fate so hopeless ruined me. cant blame the show for my mistake but being so technically bad certainly didnt help.

well when the show came back for its next (and final lol) season, they did attempt closure for eliot and quentin. for some reason this was all contained in 3 episodes, most of it in the third (503) but what the fuck ever. it has its moments.

the episode is basically about eliot and alice (q’s gf i dont think ive mentioned her name. sorry alice) going on a mini quest up a treacherous mountain for grievers to return a piece of quentin’s soul back to the underworld. their fights are soooo funny. toxic lover vs almost-lover.

alice at some point says “well he was MY boyfriend this is MY pilgrimage and you just TAGGED ALONG” and (blood obviously boiling) eliot goes “right, because he meant nothing to me”. and this highlights something so sneakily homophobic about this whole affair. quentin and eliot’s relationship never mattered to the narrative as much as all the other straight relationships, especially quentin and alice’s. like i said, they would separate for entire seasons. you will be happy to know that not 1 episode goes by without quentin and alice conflicting and making up conflicting and etc. i dont understand how quentin and eliot’s relationship wasnt important enough. they were best friends, they kissed multiple times and had sex AT LEAST once if the mosaic subtext isnt considered. and the mosaic… it isnt just that they lived together for 50 yrs and raised a child and were happy, something they couldnt quite grasp in their old lives… they achieved the beauty of all life. that is a monumental achievement that shouldve changed not only their lives, but their stories.

the thing about the confession is that it wasnt planted in s3. talking about 405, the writers said they came up with it while working on that episode. it was essentially a retcon. though its inclusion explains why they didnt talk about it literally, it doesnt excuse the narrative outright ignoring it. it DEFINITELY doesnt account for why it ignored the rest of the SAME SEASON it was ESTABLISHED IN. if this was quentin and alice, they would be talking about it nonstop. and guess the fuck what when they get back together it is *non stop*.

SO. 503. they are on their pilgrimage. tensions build. eliot hallucinates quentin’s voice (it’s a soundbite from the mosaic when eliot dies which is depressing). they meet another traveller who is grieving his long dead boyfriend.

the traveller asks who theyre grieving and alice goes My Boyfriend and eliot looks away and says he knew him as a friend and it’s so sad it makes me want to die. why did they invent new exciting ways for gay people to be ashamed of who they love. i hate this show.

anyway the traveller talks about his boyfriend and how he was a magician who died young and how his dreams were haunted by him. and eliot is listening so intensely you want to jump hale appleman for being so good at this acting thing. alice goes to sleep and leaves the two alone. then they really start talkin:

(the traveller asks) have you ever had love? (eliot smiles small, hesitant) love…? yeah love. (pause) the friend we’re putting to rest. (traveller is delightfully shock) wasnt just a friend.

truly truly truly cant describe to you how much it physically pains me that it took 2 seasons and for one of them to die and a conversation with a stranger to get to this point. why wasnt this always part of the narrative. why does this only matter now after 2 yrs of fans badgering you about why this isnt part of the fucking show despite BEING PART OF THE FUCKING SHOW! it is dead obvious this was never the intent so even with something that should feel right feels wrong because the show never wanted it. it never wanted quentin to be in love with eliot. but it doesnt make sense if he isnt. i hate this show.

the convo continues 🙄:

does she know? oh god no. a torrid secret affair. (eliot looks away) no, nothing like that.

and i wish eliot was given a proper story. i wish i knew what was going on in his head through all of this. i wish i wish.

so it is revealed that quentin and eliot “had love” and that eliot is keeping it a secret (a revelation considering they werent intimate on screen past the 1 yr anniversary, they were only ever referred to as best friends by cast and crew, AND even what they were was obscured in the confession scene. and their feelings didnt matter past 405 fuck this world). this is huge. it should be huge. eliot’s first arc is about how he cant fall in love until he does and gets his heart broken. quentin’s stories are so wrapped up in alice that having another love interest should complicate that entirely. it doesnt.

the climax of the episode is when eliot expresses difficulty of letting go of quentin and alice says “he was your friend” and eliot replies (quick as if not meaning to) “he wasnt just my friend.” and wowww. how cathartic. the first time in the history of the show they talk about it. 5 seasons btw.

and eliot tells her about the mosaic and how “we loved each other for a really really long time.” and how he told him to fuck off and how he died for him and how he was never able to talk to him again. he just died.

and that part is supposed to be cathartic too. it feels cathartic for eliot the character at least. but to me the Viewer. i was sick of how they were trying to appeal to MY thoughts of what he should be feeling. as if trying to placate me. cuz if it was soo important it wouldnt just been solved after this episode. he DGAF about quentin after this. i dont get it. why cant they write a proper story.

well one line that stuck with me and i truly felt was this:

alice: he was pretty in love with you eliot: i wouldnt say that alice: .. i would

and then eliot looks at her the most devastated a man can look.

thats it. that’s quentin and eliot. a heartfelt and final fuck this show. the fic goes crazy esp the 2019 shit.

im proud to be an eleven hater. she had so much potential but like 99% of her scenes she’s whining and making everything about herself. i haven’t watched s4 fully yet (only got to ep 1) so no spoilers but. the past seasons i wanted to pull my hair out🎣

For real, like, there was so much potential but they should have realised you can't make a show around a character that has (realistically, canonnically, any other way) NO PERSONALITY. And i get it. A child without a childhood or proper education cant be expected to know how to act like a "normal" human being, but stillllll, they're giving us stale flavourless underproved and underbaked bread with this one and i'm tiiiired 😭

2. Vanya - god tier character, too sexy, certified bad bitch. You can fit so many issues in this lil bean (and so much dicourse too: is she evil? is she a lesbian? is she trans? probably not, but lets argue about it!!!) 3. Klaus - if you look up "gay af" you will probably see a picture of him. Everything he does is iconic and the peak of fashion and thats that. They nerfed him because otherwise there'd be no point in having any of the others around tbh, hed stop the apocalypse with the power of the rainbow, friendship, and being an actual decent human being.

4. Five - can't believe hes so far down, let's be honest, we're all obsessed with him, for one reason or another, the morality of which is questionable, but not as questionable as Five's own morality, holy shit this dude is sad, bad, and definitely mad. Both in the cute pathetic way that makes you wanna cuddle lonley fictional men to death and in the "is the protagonist of this show the real villian?" way. Love to see it and dive into the psychology of the bastard man. To Five, the joker is just a clown.

5. Luther - Everyone loves to hate him, but i hate that i love him. Easily the funniest character on the show. Doesn't matter if you like or dislike him, the funniest bits of s1 were all thanks to his this ridiculous himbo. Winner of the pathetic fictional man award, actually (Five came in 2nd place), but nobody wants to give him cuddles. Its like with those disabled dogs posts that people use for sympathy points, they take care of any ol broken animal, unless its too broken and not cute enough. Luther is the dog that wasnt cute enough for a heartwarming facebook post ;-;

6. Allison - Manipulative, patronising, and known to completely disregard people's free will, using her powers to get whatever she wants. Which I LOVE and would classify as baddest bitch behaviour, moving her to 2nd place here, had we actually seen her do any of it. Instead we are just told what went down and she spends two seasons being really sowwy and whiny about it. Not very girlboss of her at all.

7. Ben - Literally dead to me. So much to say, so much to do, well ya had your chance, pal. Next time try not getting killed, how bout that, maybe id care more. Im the one who only observes and makes snarky comments, being unable to do shit about fuck, and this town aint big enough for the two of us.

im sorry luce i know you never asked for this but this makes me wanna incoherently talk about something.

i feel like this perfectly shows how the show abandoned clarke’s character to push her into being a leader. she’s a healer! that’s extremely valuable. and in s1, for the most part, she was just another part of the group (which, tbh i think is why i quite like her character in s1).

my absolute favourite meta of clarke was about linking clarke’s “healer” to her drive to control life and death which i will TRY very hard to find, i KNOW it is on my blog but you know how it is, if anyone knows the one im talking about please help me out

(now im thinking about it, i may have combined two here- i remember one of them (or both, i don’t remember) really Got clarke’s character, it had just screencaps of her throughout to seperate the text).

it detailed clarke’s collapse into “wanheda” as an opposite force where she gives up her healing ability (after mercy killing finn i think? but im not sure which moment they decided was The moment she turns her back on saving life and decides to take it instead), then through s3 slowly gains it back before it comes to a climax with the CoL and bringing everyone back.

Also, the lever that she seems to continuously pull symbolises her holding onto life, bringing forth death and then moving onto the next stage of her life (like a cleanse, a rebirth).

she pulls a lever at mount weather and leaves, and then when she pulls the lever in the CoL she’s, in a sense, coming home to herself and that core of her character that was the healer of the group in s1. or...she should’ve. instead they decided to go the route of, still, a full circle, but instead with her as the goverment that sent 100 kids to die on the ground. it’s still an arc i really admire, and love watching her gradual desent into full-blown control freak (who ideally should’ve died in a sacrifice, saving her friends rather than people after realising she isn’t capable as a leader- while atoning for all the grief she caused them because she “had to” for the greater good. that’s why i don’t appreciate the arc as much anymore tbh).

but the thing is i don’t actually think this was intentional? i think they wanted her to be a leader and they ended up abandoning her healer side until (if) it was convinient. in s4-7 this meta completely falls apart. it’s just non-existent. it’s like she was never medically trained at all, when i considered it such a big part of her character from s1-3.

I never really cared for Debbie. I hated her in past seasons but I didn’t really care for her in the most recent ones but after watching this weeks HOS ep, I fucking hate her so much. Carl mentioned Fiona and she had the audacity to say “who”. Like wtf do you mean who. These damn kids are so ungreatful they should be kissing her fucking feet (not really). And then they put a montage of Fiona in all of her worst moments to make her look like a bad parent/guardian. Who tf writes this stuff?!?!? Lmfao sorry I’m just so mad, I love Fiona.

I just watched it and honestly I didn't think it was that bad but it was still really fucking dumb like I wish there was more Liam. Poor kid did not have enough screentime yet again 😒

Debbie is just the fucking worst. How can you be such a fucking bitch and say "who" about your own sister/guardian. She fucking raised them. Like that was just so shitty ugh. And I know it had to play into the narrative of them having shitty parents/guardians but she really didn't need to say "who" like that was so uncalled for.

I did like the flashbacks for most of the episode like all the old school Carl stuff of him being a little psycho, I miss s1-3 carl.

But yeah once again these HoS episodes prove to be dumb af lmao

i couldn’t bring myself to write this or read anything you’ve written, for that matter, because doing this would mean that the season has really ended and i wasn’t ready to let it go yet. but now my mind is a bit clearer and i think this is finally the right time.

i am incredibly grateful. to everyone who shared this experience with me, directly or not. to anyone who took their time to add tags in my edits either to compliment me or to insult me (always jokingly of course, sometimes i deserved that). to anyone who left me messages thanking me and letting me know that my our work was appreciated. to anyone who decided i was worthy enough to read their thoughts and/or stories. thank you. this wouldn’t have been the same without you.

then of course i want to thank the whole skam italia team, even if these words will probably get lost in the ether. thank you to ludovico and marco for writing such a beautiful and raw love story. yes, of course they just adapted another already lovely one, but they did such a great job in making this different while following the same steps and making it so personal that you forgot another version already existed. not only, they gave us one of the most genuine and healthy portrayal of male friendships i’ve ever seen. and they gave me hope. they didn’t focus on the negativity of what this country is going through; of course you could still perceive it, that’s natural and realistic and i’m glad they also brought that, but at the same time, just like fede said, they showed us a love story between two guys and made it as normal as possible. because it is normal. ludovico may come off as arrogant, yes, and often he actually is, but he’s aware of what he’s doing and the worth of his work and sometimes, especially here and now, you have to be arrogant to be heard. thank you to federico for giving us the bast marti we could have asked for. you could see how important this was for him and how delicately he treated his character. how proud he is to be playing him and how he himself grew up a lot thanks to marti. and then rocco, who portrayed amazingly our vulnerable but lovely and sweet niccolò. he crawled under my skin and it will take some time before i could forget his performance. federico was right, italy needs skam, people need to wake up, and i still can’t believe the impact this show has had on our country. and for this, again, i am so grateful.

then, last but not least, i have to thank my two companions through all of this: quei due pasticcini di @solo-silenzio e @corcordiums. girls, i already said this a million times, but this wouldn’t have been the same without you. i’ll keep in my heart every “raga” that made me skip a bit, every absurd theory we could come up with at 4am (let’s be real, you came up with them in the middle of the night and then i always found the disaster the morning after), every time i had to bite my hands because i was at uni and couldn’t follow what was going on with the both of you, every gif of tina or maria. but then, also, i’ll keep the tears, the joy, the love we shared. it’s not easy to get so close in such a short period of time but somehow it happened to us and i couldn’t be happier. and don’t worry, because i know you think about it, it will still be the same now that this season has ended. vi voglio bene 💙

to wrap this up: i was already following s1 and i had loved it, but i couldn’t have guessed this second season would mark me this much. this year hasn’t been one of my best so far, not at all, and this season came at the right moment in my life. as marti grew and learned, i myself felt always better and better and who knows, maybe it was also thanks to this redhead lovely boy. i’ll never say thank you enough. this is not a goodbye of course, now i’m very excited about season 3 and i will follow it just as passionately as this one. but i felt like i needed to spend some words. ily guys, and always share the love ❤️️🧡💛💚💙💜

yeah !!!! after seeing her with murray it was so clear that journalism was going to become a Passion tm for her. and then for them to follow up with that and show her really wanting to pursue it, and actually being really good (bar the part where her sexist and thick-skulled bosses were assholes and later died ofc). i totally agree, she's definitely found comfort in being justified for following her suspicions, and then later, even with the school paper. she needs things to do, to keep her occupied, so she conquers yet another thing and finds a similar thrill in covering a new topic, in finally being in charge and in exploring all of these people and whatnot

THERE'S NO WAY FOR HER TO WIN. GOD. YEAH. it really is just so…. yeah. she's stuck between these two world, and maybe if the upside down had continued like,, a week or two after the first time, she might have found herself turning entirely to being an adult figure, and more thoroughly burying the more innocent version of herself ? but as you said, it leaves her fractured and she has no idea how to convey that in any sort of way. i think she's probably the best character they've displayed that shift with? jonathan too, where he's got a load of guilt from s1 but even then, we don't really see much of that until s4 where he starts smoking and finding argyle as a friend to share,,, something that doesn't involve an alternate and deadly dimension crawling with monsters ! though the writers don't explore him smoking as some sort of coping mechanism it's pretty implied and it definitely gives him a way to separate himself from the past and [insert something about his relationship with will because they NEEDED to explore that more but i don't have the brainspace to fully flesh that out]

SO WHO IS NANCY WHEELER !!! god i would love to see that as a spinoff. nancy and barb moments, nancy and mike moments, nancy hunting monsters and trying to find one person's barb as a way to try and heal her own past…. nancy falling in love with robin… all of it.

!!! absolutely and idk if the writers were purposely building ronance like that or if it was somewhat rushed bc… bc. but either way it does work. and maybe it's that robin is so Different than all of her other friends? especially from barb, who we've seen as more caustic and a little sharp in the same ways that nancy could be sharp, and their relationship had so much history behind it, but robin is. earth-shatteringly different. not someone nancy would normally hang out with, and she's loud and doesn't seem to understand when nancy gets irritated, and instead of retreating or giving up she keeps pushing and poking and it works. and yeah !!! i think after all these years, nancy has firmly cemented herself in a world of heteronormativity and pushed away anything else, even though there was something that was always fighting against her parents' cul-de-sac life. and it's so funny when she pushes robin and doesn't believe that her and steve are platonic because for the life of her, she can't figure out how that makes sense (and also. because every good friend she's had she's ended up dating lmao. not that robin's about to break that pattern but just. yknow). i am very much thinking about the byler ronance parallels tyvm! the wheeler family does not know what romantic love is lmao! never apologize for a ronance rant though !!!! i love hearing all your thoughts :D

yess i love what you said about journalism vindicating her hunches. there's so much to be said about nancy's voice, her desire to be heard and so many people in her life either not listening or actively silencing her. i think her growth in her confidence and assertion of herself and her thoughts is the greatest marker of her growth throughout the series, moreso than her abilities with a gun.

totally agree!!!!!! i wonder how the next season will play out, i've seen so many conflicting things about time jumps and whatnot. i wonder if this will be the first time where supernatural happenings have a prolonged stay in the story, and how that will affect these characters' psyches, especially nancy. it's kind of interesting seeing her switch between these personalities as the danger becomes more real and pressing and then when they defeat it and she's able to shower off all the dirt and grit and put on a newly pressed outfit and fix her makeup but even with that veneer of normalcy she can't pretend to be regular or really exist outside of a state of terror. so for the supernatural stuff to be dragged out even longer like it might be it creates such a unique conflict for her i think i just need to know what that is going to do to her brain!!! nancy in that specific mode for such a long time CAN'T be good for her but i also do wonder if some part of her feels more comfortable being in that state where there is a problem and she can help provide the solution and for a moment the people around her are experiencing the world the same way she does most of the time which is finding it terrifying and confusing and full of problems. does that make sense? or is the cold medicine taking over

Anyway yeah getting mysteriously captured and yeeted halfway across the planet is not only logistically unbelievable but also boring and unoriginal and not epic and absolutely something weve seen a million times before, despite what gimple and norman are squawking about in the media.

Altho you know what is logistically believable and interesting and original and epic and new? A lighthearted spinoff in which both daryl and carol, 2 people who have historically had little to no control over their lives and constantly prioritize other peoples wants above their needs, CHOOSING (yes, CHOOSING) to take control of their lives, make their own choices, and choose their own happiness over one more serving the Greater Good Of Team Family. A show centered around character development instead of machine guns and running zombies? A show more in line with The Golden Years of twd (s1/2/3, and then s9/10) vs the Its All Downhill From Here Years of twd (s4-8, and now, apparently, s11)? Give the people what they want!

SF is welcome to share her own thoughts as always, but here are mine for whatever it's worth. Some of the promotion going on right now like saying the show's been in (pre?) production over the summer reads like backfilling to me, trying to fill in the gaps where there was no news to make it seem like everything's been steadily progressing despite changing many times. But I can tell you as can a few others that wasn't the case at least around SDCC. How the premise has changed is extremely relevant. When Norman first started talking about it back in April/May, he referenced a "mission" where he'd be running into characters who were missing, implying he'd be looking for Rick, but we're not hearing about that anymore. The Richonne spinoff takes away Daryl's hook and if they can't rely on the Rick carrot to pull an audience, suddenly Carylers become a lot more important again. We've been saying all along it makes no sense for Daryl to leave Carol and now, five months later, we're given the "reassurance" that he doesn't. Whether or not they're locked into that now, I don't know. As was already mentioned, casting extras doesn't require scripts or contracts, so they're easy to dismiss. Casting announcements for recurring or guest roles would carry a lot more weight. Regardless, it seems like instead of  pulling the plug, they might still be trying to win our approval. Does that frustrate me? Yes. It's futile for one thing and puts ego ahead of rational business decisions. At the same time, it doesn't answer our real question, which is what we can look forward to from Melissa/Carol/Caryl after the series finale. That's what our focus has always been and I don't want to lose that. Melissa saying Carol's story isn’t over is a good sign. I don't think anyone's in a position to make her say something she doesn't want or mean.

weehaw it’s time for Mid Season Anime Reviews Time With The Shithead check it out. there have been a lot of surprises this season, AND the most seizures possible in one anime season check it out

urara meirochou: really good and really gay. everything is about girls We Are All Girls (richard dawkins shirt meme) I’m glad we’ve gotten some actual divination and actual plot in this show. feels good. going good so far, probably my standout of the season. great OP/ED and tons of energy and good character dynamics... recommended for gayest

demi-chan wa kitaritai: fine show. nothing exceptional yet, it’s playing its cards really close to the vest though. hopefully we take some risks before the end of the season because this is the perfect place for Social Commentary to take place and have clout.

gabriel dropout: big disappointment so far. this show is The Toothless Wonder. that should tell you all you need to know. it’s being ABSOLUTELY carried by satania and the writers have given up on using the other characters by episode 6. prospects are dim for this one to be better than just another CGDCT to forget. every episode is about 5-7 minutes of content also please speed up the jokes we can take it coach we’re ready

eldlive: I don’t know what I expected. I kind of just watched this one for the concept because Fuck It, but it’s been really sincere (almost to the point of being naive) so far and it takes pretty good advantage of the Space Aliens Cops premise to do something odd (hormones??? space hormones???). lots of baffling design choices but I don’t mind it. another one I hope takes more risks but it’s just so odd that I kind of respect it for existing

ACCA: had no expectations for this show and it’s barely behind urara for best this season. very down tempo thriller/political intrigue show which is incredibly refreshing in modern anime times. I was drawn in by the plot though I must admit the Quality hits you from time to time. OP/ED best in season. I feel like the mystery in it might be a bit of a vapor but i’m holdin out for something cool since this writer has cred

maid dragon: as expected, kyoani is now a legitimate animation studio again. love this one and the animation quality is just so consistently strong that it really improves the experience (still wish there was more soundtrack/foley work though). ALSO, BEST HEALTHIEST BL COUPLE IN ALL OF ANIME. THIS IS THE GOLD STANDARD, FOLKS. PLEASE REFER TO THIS AS AN EXAMPLE.

onihei: picked this one up today on a whim, knowing nothing and being moderately disinterested based on the cover art alone and... not bad either! it started as a really average samurai era police action/drama but it got real weird eps 5-6 and now I think I love it out of nowhere? sound design is great as well. also the protagonist is Nice Yoshikage Kira which is a BIG draw. give it a shot. you won’t regret picking it up.

fate grand order first order: oh right I did watch this! it was like, it existed. it was fine. not winning any medals for this but it’s fine. felt like an in-joke. skip if youre not already into the fate series; if you are youve already watched this

original Ghost In The Shell rewatch but in a theater: seriously, if you get a chance, go watch this on the big screen. I forgot just how desolate and fascinating it is, and how much I loved the retro 80s-early 90s sci fi color palette work in general

noein: oh dude this shit’s blowing my mind. some of the most unique ANYTHING design I’ve ever seen. writing is slightly sloppy but the psychology in it, and especially that FIRST EPISODE where you just don’t know what’s going on during the last like 8 minutes? pick this up. I’m halfway through and if you like pure sci fi this one’s great. lovely OP/ED as well

gunslinger girl: feel so complicated. it’s a cool show but it doesn’t have a very strong message so far. the action’s pretty good. art style is rather dry... most of the way through S1 so hopefully I’ll have more details when I finish...?
