rdj the (whitewashed) electric boogaloo
This is a reminder to everyone who's excited about RDJ's casting as Doctor Doom that this casting is whitewashing. Victor Von Doom is a Romani character and has been a Romani character since his introduction in the 1960s. (Fantastic Four Annual #2 [1964]) Not only that, but his Roma identity and the persecution he and his family faced due to it is integral to his character, it is what forms his identity. (Books of Doom by Ed Brubaker) Even if on the off chance this casting is meant to not be Victor but instead be some variant of Tony or whomever else becoming Doctor Doom, it is damaging to the character to rob him of that important cultural background. Doctor Doom does not exist without that history. Fans have been pushing hard to cast Doom as a Romani actor for years, especially since the MCU has whitewashed other Romani characters. (Wanda, Pietro, etc) This casting is not a celebration moment, it's fucking heartbreaking that the MCU repeatedly ignores the important and nuanced cultural backstories of characters.
I know I can't change anybody's mind on whether or not you want to be excited about RDJ's return to the MCU. But I do think at the very least you should be mad that the MCU is baiting us all and destroying nuanced and interesting characters for the sake of self-referential easter eggs and nostalgia bait. Because that's what it is. Feel how you'd like to feel about RDJ's return, but personally, this is soul-sucking. I had such a deep love for the MCU as a teenager, it was obviously something incredibly formative to me, especially Tony Stark. This isn't recreating what I fell in love with the MCU for. This is turning a well-planned and artistic storyline of adaptations into cheap cash grabs and fan service. Because, I think we're past the point of being able to call the MCU an adaptation of anything. They can use existing characters' names and powers, but to say they're being properly adapted is laughable.
This is not an adaptation of Doctor Doom. This is RDJ the Electric Boogaloo because Marvel's fear of losing the interest of dedicated MCU fans overrides their willingness to tell stories that are genuine to the characters. I don't know what there is to be excited about that. The MCU has lost its authenticity and aside from a few projects, feels heartless. Every movie is a copy of a copy. This announcement isn't something celebratory, it feels like a death knell of a cinematic universe that's so desperate to cling to relevancy it's resorting to nostalgia for a character/actor who hasn't even been dead for a decade. We're not getting anything new, we're just rinsing and repeating the same song and dance.
I get it. I love Tony Stark, his death destroyed me and I to this day, rue the ending he got in Endgame. It misunderstood his arc and it robbed him of a satisfying conclusion. But the solution to that isn't dragging the corpse out of the grave five years later to whitewash an existing character with rich and interesting nuance, just to forcibly tie his existence in the MCU to Tony. Whether he is a variant or not. Why would you want someone else's fave's legacy to be destroyed simply so your fave's legacy can go on? Hell, if we were really all so hellbent on the return of RDJ and/or Tony to the MCU, we have the multiverse for a reason. There were other ways to do it that didn't whitewash and ruin someone else. This just. Isn't something to be happy about.

This is my full DC humour comic reading list. I can't lock notes on my phone, but I honestly wish I could. Because if I add any more to this damned list, it'll stretch for miles and miles. I just have to settle for everything I have here. We have 60s humour comics, some 90s and 2000s tie in tv show comics, some scooby doo/dc crossover stuff, some graphic novels, the list goes on. If any of the things on the list seem unfamiliar, it's probably because I learned of them through either exploring the website I now use for comic reading, or from exploring the DC wikis. I am half tempted to add the other stuff made by the Tiny Titans people to this list, even if it isn't DC. Their artstyle and sense of humour was always so visually pleasing. I adored it as a kid. So would it be weird if I put the rest of their stuff (even non-dc related) on the reading list? That's what i'm pondering now...

you are an unhinged rat for sending me this ask i hope you know <3 you already knew that but i'm telling you anyway bc you're a rat bc now i have to explain myself-
this is from @eebuckley my partner <3 i've alluded to it in the tags of this blog but i used to be a semi-popular MCU blogger from like 2018 to 2020. (semi-popular for the ship i wrote, anyway) and since like, probably Infinity War/Endgame i have been slowly more and more disillusioned by the MCU ranging from only passively being interested in projects to outright despising them if i saw them. which sort of sucks, given how much i loved the MCU at it's height. i was like. aggressively into it. like a "i had asthma attacks watching trailers bc i got so excited" level of into it. maybe cringey in hindsight, honestly but yk. whatever brings you joy, ig.
and anyway- my partner witnessed my very real and normal reaction to the Thunderbolts* trailer and now i'm *mad* bc i'm actually excited about it. it made me feel about the MCU a way i haven't felt in years, especially after a lot of announcements that rlly pissed me off.
cannot believe it looks like we might actually get a comics-accurate Yelena and a comics-accurate Bucky. i'm such a sucker for Bucky Barnes, he's one of the only Marvel characters i actually read Marve comics for and i'm forever bitter how badly he got screwed over. if that movie is good i'm going to end up writing fanfiction. probably crossover fanfiction bc over my dead body will i write just plain MCU fanfic. and i'm a Jason Todd/Bucky shipper anyway so i could make it work, i think-
anyway TLDR is i'm excited and i'm mad about it and how dare yo expose me for being an MCU fan on THIS blog. you coulda send this ask to my MCU blog that still exists and i have occasionally used. but instead you *exposed* my ass on my refined DC blog as a filthy Marvel fan. i will be divorcing you again. ty gn ily

I decided to say screw it and make the season 2
It's all the same as last year, and if you're new the rules are in the form notes.
I added an extra space for images this time but if your character was submitted last year then there's no need to add an image since I still have the images! If it's a new character it would really mean a lot if you added an image, but its by no means required at all.
Lastly I wanna remind everyone that no character is immediately in the tournament!! No matter how popular or obvious they are there's no guarantees. Aside from Kirby. I'm on the fence on whether I should put him as an automatic entry or save him to the end to make him battle the winner of this year. Maybe you guys can help with that. idk.

not to be a downer, i'm not sure exactly where you stand on xinamiguel after that analysis post (which is v good), but after everything miguel has done it just doesn't really feel like xina should be with him at all. do u think there's any scenario where it works or do you think their differences are irreconcilable?
don't be worried about being a downer! you're asking a really good question and we're talking about miguel o'hara's Emporium Of Awful Choices, here. par for the course, and part of the fun.
short answer: things are irreconciliable—at least, they are, at the beginning of the story. alas, sm2099 is about change, and about betterment.
longer answer: yeah, miguel... does not deserve xina. on a similar vein, he doesn't deserve gabriel, either. part of his character growth is that he wants to be someone who does—he wants it so desperately—but they're both fully entitled to telling him to fuck off; if he and xina truly reconcile, it should be entirely on her terms.
so, where's the appeal? (say, aside from the fact that we're rooting for xina and want to drop the hissy, scraggly cat that ran off a while ago back on her doorstep?)
when we look at the original sm2099 storyline as a whole, its thesis (and miguel's thesis, too) states that it's never too late to turn things around and break the cycle. to be better than what the generation before you groomed you to be. the only thing that makes the pain of leaving his blissful ignorance towards a fundamentally unkind world bearable is while the world is not kind and is not loving, the people are.
narratively, xina is completely enmeshed in this idea of self-determination. her personal interests are separate from those of the state. she talks of history that alchemax is supposedly hiding, and is intrigued by the remains of a society that's long gone. she tells miguel he has to stand up for himself. tells him to be brave.
and therein lies the problem: i don't think—for a minute—miguel ever stops being the scared kid in an angry man's house. bravery, in his world, meant broken bones (it meant getting his drink spiked). safety, in his world, meant being the smartest, most powerful person in the room.
it takes a long time... almost too long, for miguel to be brave despite his terror—but he does it. maybe bravery lends to hope, and love, and safety.
and the miguel o'hara xina knows—the best friend that was dragged away from her from right underneath her feet—is someone she recognizes again. the man who snarked at her choice twencen decor comes back, and he gifts her a gumball machine.
