She’s independent and intelligent and her goal is to get paid, she isn’t afraid to trick or do away with with men in order to get what she wants will quite literally fight to meet her goal.

Venus: the Seductress

She uses beauty and sexuality to get what she wants. Has an air of playfulness and innocence that’s only a manipulation tactic to further get in with the men she’s after. Her goal is to have men fall for her, then leave them high and dry.

Amazon: The Warrior

Typically seen as both feminine and masculine, and is usually seen as risqué and non-conformist. Uses sexuality to get what she wants and is always on the lookout for her next conquest.

Sappho: The Self-Reliant

She is only seen as dangerous because she seeks a different lifestyle than most consider to be normal. She’s ambitious and smart and is only concerned with living the life she wants and doing whatever she needs or has to do to achieve that lifestyle.

Sebastian

I think he’s kinda hard to get to fold because he’s just like 😐🫤 to everything. Like it would take a while to even get him to like you as a friend let alone get him to have feelings for you unless you’re just his absolute dream girlfriend lmao.

I also think it depends on what his type is because it’s either he wants someone that is innocent enough for him to corrupt or domineering enough that he wants to submit to them. And I don’t think a person could really play both because he wouldn’t play into that.

Like Sebastian needs to think either you’re a cute girl who he can destroy or a dommy mommy who is going to absolutely annihilate him.

He’s the definition of an “oh yeah?” Guy. Like I do think he is easier to seduce than Shane simply because he’s younger and doesn’t have the same issues that he does. Like Shane is at the point in his life where he’s already had sex enough times that it’s not going to excite him more than anything else does. Sebastian is still a guy that’s like hell yeah I wanna smash!!!

I think though being really playful with him (either in a traditional seductive sense or a really ditzy sense) would get him to fold though. Like after so many times your jokes and playfulness will grow on him, it’ll just take a little time.

You’re gonna read this a LOT in this post (I’m writing this last lmao) but that means I think a mix of the Venus and Sappho types would sway him.

I think it would only be hard to get to Sam to fall for you because he lowkey has no idea what’s going on. Like I really do think homeboy has adhd, and while he has a military dad and is smarter than most people think, I think being raised by Jodi means that he really does think everyone is just being really nice.

Like even if you make dirty jokes or straight up just tell him you want to fuck, he’s going to take it as a silly little joke that you’re making between friends.

Like you’d have to be more physical with him to get him to understand that you mean business. Does he like you? Yes! But does he think that in a million years you’d like him back? No.

I think that playing with his hair, running your fingers over his arms and chest, or pushing your chest into him would work the best. Dude would absolutely lose his mind because to him there’s a fine line between being friendly and being an actual flirt.

I think the Amazon type would work best on him simply because of the fact that that type is seen as risqué and you’d have to do some pretty out there things to get him to realize anything.

Shane

It is boarderline IMPOSSIBLE to get this man to fold. He hates himself, he thinks everyone also hates him, so you flirting with him just really makes him think you’re playing a joke on him.

No amount of throwing yourself at him, openly flirty, acting cute will get him to give in to you.

I really think he would just stare at you with a blank face if you try to act coy like leaning into him is not going to get him to react at all.

I do however, think that a dryer femme fatale type would get him to fall headfirst. Like having a drink(unfortunately) and having a dry and sarcastic sense of humor would make him like you.

I think matching his energy in a super confident way would work the best on him.

The Diana type would work best on his because it’s mostly based on intelligence and wit? Like being physical or sexual isn’t going to sway Shane but intelligence and wit might.

Elliott

Would kinda be a challenge against a femme fatale type. I don’t think Elliott folds easily, BUT I do think with a little bit of pressure he would give in easier than someone like Shane or Sebastian. Kinda on the same level as Sam.

Would be flirty right back like dude writes novels. I personally think he’s a romance novel writer who also includes fantasy or history in his novels. So he has to have done a bunch of research on romance and how people court one another.

It is NOT going to be easy getting him to do what you want unless you straight up just tell him instead of luring him.

I also think because he came from a well off family that he has experience with femme fatale types. Like going to parties and dinners and women trying to get with him because he has money. I think the only reason he folds is because he can somehow tell you’re actually into him, like there’s no gain to being with him, he lives in a shack and you have a whole ass farm. You being into him is what he falls for.

I think what would work best is literally just throwing yourself at him but in a more…not manipulative but in a way that makes everything seem innocent? I’m so bad at explaining my bad.

I feel like a mix of the Venus and Diana types would get to him. A mix of playful flirting and mind games would sway him.

I think Harvey is the easiest to get to out of all the bachelors

Like run a nail up his arm, lean into him, flutter your eyelashes, you could convince the man to do pretty much anything.

I think being a mix of the Venus and Sappho/Diana types would work. Because I do think that unlike Harvey, Alex would enjoy some cat and mouse dynamics? unfortunately I doubt I have a satisfactory answer to this, because I really don’t know. 😂 I think I’ve described the process before as just playing a constant improv game of “yes, and…” with myself, and if I’m being totally honest i suspect some of it is adhd lol. I don’t typically start a plot line knowing how it’s going to end. For instance, the Lily/remus werewolf confrontation you mention came about because I had decided it would make sense for the marauders to encounter weed at some point — it was the 70s! — and at the same time unrelated to TLE I was reading about medical marijuana, and I was like oh…Remus. This makes sense. It didn’t really have anything to do with Lily until I decided I wanted her to confront him in TLE2. Originally that confrontation was going to take place in TLE3, but when I actually started writing that was waaaay too long for Lily to have that knowledge and do nothing.

A lot of plot I think really just comes from knowing the characters very well, and I knew that Lily was a doer. So it got to a point where she HAD to say something to him, but because she’s a doer/problem solver/help and serve kind of girl, I needed her to come armed with a solution. Enter edibles lmao. I also liked the fact that it was a very Muggle solution, thus something that Lily would be most likely to think of. Plus, her history with her mother’s long term illness meant that she’d been exposed to the concept of alternative pain management etc. it just clicked into place. So then I had to come up with a way for her to get weed, which led to Davey Gudgeon’s secret weed empire, which led to, which led to, which led to….you can see how these things can get out of hand and then suddenly you’ve written 600,000 words of fanfiction 😔

so in stars and time got a discount for anniversary. and so i bought it. and then played it for 12 hours straight. and oh. My god. so i feel like making a silly post abt it

first of all. mirabelle being aroace came out of the blue but the SCREAM i screamed when she started talking about it. i feel like we never get any romance repulsed characters in media really and i love that there was a side quest that allowed that aspect of her to be shown off And it still related to her main struggle. phenomenal character writing ough. and siffrin asexual too <33

also i adore odile but i did not expect her side quest to hit the second hardest. “i am other” might be one of the single most banger lines ive ever heard. i love her character but that made her so much better. this game might be one of the few where i actually felt connected in important ways to All of the party members

i only got to act 3 so far (i did the full friendship loop, probably i need to yap at loop a lot which i have been neglecting) but siffrin also had many moments where i was like. Oh. that’s. that’s me. with a very notable one being the plant room when everyone made a conscious effort not to touch him like. eee

last thing but i also really relate to siffrin feelings-wise, as someone with a dissociative disorder. i don’t really know how to put it into words well but sometimes i feel like i’m looping too. like every week is the same and i mess it up a different way each time, and everyone around me is just saying lines in their own little scene that i’m not in. and the memory thing too, my adhd combined with that often make me think things happened that didn’t, or i forget really important things a lot of the time and can’t even remember enough to retrace my steps or leave clues for myself. i don’t know but that feeling is a lot of why i was lowkey glued to this game until 3:30 AM yesterday.

I did my part today in The Bad Class, it was me in the trenches with one other guy defending stories told in mediums other than books against the world (the entire rest of the class) 🫡 (things I used below the cut)

It saddens me that the academic community is so biased towards anything other than published books. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a writer myself and I adore books, but they’re missing out on so many good stories that hit so much harder in mediums other than words on a page!!! ✨Stories of all kinds are equally precious✨ pass it on

Defending movies: Inception!!! If you’ve not seen it, it deals a lot with dreams and layers of dreaming, and thinking about reality. In it, there’s a gimmick where you have a certain ‘totem’ (item) that you can use to determine if you’re in a dream or awake, and the main character’s is a top—if he’s in a dream, it will never stop spinning, but if it’s reality, the top will eventually be stopped by gravity. (Spoiler alert) At the end of the movie, the mc finally gets home to his kids like he’s been trying to the whole movie, and as he embraces them in the background a little out of focus, you see his top on the table, spinning—and right before you could expect it to start to wobble, the soundtrack peaks (thank you Hans Zimmer you master) and cuts off and the screen goes black, leaving you to your own conclusions. It’s such an effective moment and it really would not be the same in a book!

Defending video games: Crisis Core lmao. I love how it uses game mechanics to characterize Zack in such a unique and creative way!!! The DMW is the main thing that comes to mind here, in particular in the final battle, but over the whole game and how it gets you used to it as well. You get a new thing every time Zack gets a new friend, and that’s the source of your strongest attacks throughout the game, a thing you’re constantly thinking about and relying on—which is such a cool way to characterize Zack, because then you realize your thought process has basically been turned into his! He loves his friends, they’re everything to him, and they’re the source of his strength! Which makes the final battle so so devastating when they’re fading away and you get to see, nay experience, his last thoughts as they’re happening. It’s so devastating in a way I’ve rarely been devastated before, and it would not be the same in words. Also there’s the funny haha that this adhd puppy’s brain runs on gambling because he has to get extremely lucky to be able to focus on anything lmaooo

Defending comic books: Loki Agent of Asgard!!!! My beloved! So this is the comic book run where Loki becomes the god of stories, and everything about how it was done here is just. SO so genius. When I say these comic books were a formative experience for me I mean it. But I’ll focus on the things that were great specifically because of the medium here, otherwise I’d be gushing for hours. Yknow how comic books generally have little narrator text bubbles telling you what you need words to describe? And then maybe have a different one for the thoughts of the character? Well this had that, and the narrator bubbles were styled like little scrolls. When you get towards the end of the run, after Loki has realized his power as the god of stories, you get to a part where he’s facing the gods of the gods, telling them a story—and then the little narrator scrolls have the speech bubble thing drawn off from them, to Loki. It’s been him as the god of stories narrating his own story the entire time, writing his own destiny. Such a powerful moment, blew my mind—you could do something similar in a normal book I guess, but it was just so impactful here that I think it wouldn’t be exactly the same. And also, earlier (I think in the second volume), a different future version of Loki is time travelling using his story god powers to write the past to his own ends (you don’t know his connection to story yet, so this is an example of such good foreshadowing), and to do this he reaches out of the panel and jumps into the margins to travel around the story!!! Mind-blowing stunning 1000/10

The strength of books: I just realized why I like my specific imagery-laden style of writing so much in the middle of class while I was explaining this. So in On Fairy Stories (the book the discussion was about for the day), Tolkien talks about how the invention of the adjective was the most important thing for the invention of fantasy, because it helps you change things—for example you can say things like the red sky or the green sun, and people can imagine that. There’s a linguistic concept called mental models which explores how we think in metaphors to understand more abstract concepts—for example, a lot of people tend to view how electricity works in terms of the flow of water. In fantasy, we can take our words and especially our adjectives and metaphors, and we can craft new mental models that wouldn’t work in the real world, and create our own worlds doing that to great effect. I find myself doing this SO much now that I think about it! And that’s something you can do really really well with words that doesn’t lend itself as well to adaptations in other mediums.

And that’s the thing, really—you can do things to amazing effect if you write them using the strengths of the medium you choose! That’s why adaptations rarely work I think, people just don’t play to the strengths.

thank you for such a thorough answer to my question about COI!! i don’t know anything at all about dog breeding, all of mine have come off the streets lol. it is BONKERS to me that the breed average for collies is 40%. so does that mean that most of the collies i see out in the world are kind of related? also i know you said w dobermans there’s not really any way to breed away from it, is it the same with collies? are breeders working to move that average % down?

so are all collies related - yes and no. yes, in the sense that they all descend from the same ancestors and share genetics. no, in the sense that on paper they're not related. for example: stellina comes from a long-time breeder of show dogs on the US east coast. @as-old-roads audrey (my beloved) was a rehome who originally came from a midwest puppy mill. our dogs do not have any shared members of the family tree for several generations back. they're, at best, extremely distant cousins. and when we compared their DNA test results... they were 50% genetic matches for each other. that's not from being actual relatives - that's just because the collie gene pool is small enough that if you take a random scoop, you overlap with someone else 🤷

is there a way to breed away from high COI - not really, which is the tricky part of it. COI will always accumulate over time, meaning that as long as no new blood is introduced, each generation will have higher COI than the last. the way to combat this is A) start with a very large population of founding dogs (obv not an option for collies anymore, as the breed was developed in the 1800s); B) allow new blood through an "open studbook" (anyone with a collie-ish dog can breed their dog and have the offspring registered as collies if it's determined they look enough like a pure collie); or C) dedicated outcross programs (specifically seeking out unrelated collie-type dogs to cross to pure collies and then breeding those offspring back to pure collies to try and add more diversity without sacrificing the breed type)

the first option (large founding population) isn't viable anymore - we know that the original collies were developed from the native working farm dogs in whats now the UK, and then people said 'hey these dogs are pretty' and started breeding them specifically for bench/show moreso than herding, which is what makes the collies such a (IMO) lovely blend of herding and companion/family dog. we know other dogs were crossed in during development, but we don't have records of what: we've heard rumors that borzoi were added, and gordon setter, among others, but we can't say for sure. but regardless, this ship has sailed.

the second two options - the open studbook and outcross problems - are workable in theory, however they're not magic fix-alls. while COI/diversity is very important, it's also not the end-all be-all to health (as evidence by the fact that collies as a breed are doing really good health-wise). however, the biggest positive is also the biggest negative: you're diluting what's already in the gene pool. collies have high COI, but they also have very unique temperaments - they're very gentle, polite, exceptional with children, watchful but non-aggressive, intelligent, driven but not obsessive. i love the collie personality - that's what makes them collies, and not just random fluffy herding dogs. the idea of bringing in non-collies to the studbooks and creating generations of dogs that didn't have that same unique collie personality is so, so sad for me to think about. and yes in theory you can try and breed back to the traits you like, but what if you've now introduced, say, resource guarding into the gene pool? or fearfulness? or a health issue like DCM? there's such a fine line as to what makes a breed a breed, and it is very easy to deviate from that, even accidentally.

are breeders working to move the COI down - 😬 ymmv but most of the breeders i've talked to have a very "well it's not a problem so i'm not concerned" type of thinking about it. which, again, yeah the dogs are healthy now, but i think it shows a serious lack of foresight to not be concerned. but, these high COI show dogs are producing very consistent puppies who are doing consistently well at shows, so that's whats being bred. and that means that the breeders who are passionate about breeding and showing The Collie, and the breeders who want to do outcrosses and open studbooks, tend to have very, very little overlap. i've not seen any outcross programs that are worth following IMO (and i don't consider "old time scotch collie" to be outcross programs, as those OTSC dogs are supposed to be significantly different. if you're not aiming to keep your dogs part of the original breed, then it's not an outcross, it's a different breed).

i would love to see collie breeders and the collie breed club actually work together and focus on specific, dedicated outcross projects. or a formal procedure for allowing new blood into the studbooks. but unless something happens to really light a fire under their asses, i doubt it'll happen. so for now i'll stick with my worryingly-high COI dogs, with the temperaments and health that i love, and hope that the breed manages to defy the odds and stay healthy.

first, my only hangup on this theory: what are the odds of two riders in the same squad, in the same year, having the same signet (Ridoc and Liam)? I know some signets are more rare than others, but that’s still a very slim chance when there’s 20+ signets out there that we know of, and RY will probably come up with more (fr, I need to know what Garrick and Aaric's signets are. I hope they're something unique, that we haven't seen yet.) but here are a few arguments in favor of two-signet Liam:

one: I don’t think it was just “RY putting the wrong name”.

Ridoc wasn’t there at Resson, so RY would have to have confused the two boys entirely for it to be a mistake. besides them both being perfect little bbs and adoring fans of Violet, they’re not alike in appearance, dragon color, nor backstory -- what is Ridoc’s deal? like why did he want to become a rider? I need to know for my next gfverse chapter 😭 and the mistake would also have to slip past multiple rounds of editors and proofreaders as well, which is possible, but not probable.  and was Ridoc's signet even confirmed at that time? maybe this is me forgetting things, because ADHD, and it’s been a while since I’ve read FW in full, but the first time I remember hearing about Ridoc’s signet is in Iron Flame — when they’re at RSC and he’s like “I could force the locks open with ice”. that confused me at the time because I didn’t know about (or remember) his signet. and then it really clicked for me later, when he makes an ice pack for poor Brennan after Mira decks him lmao. is it mentioned earlier than that? when I search “ice” in my FW ebook it shows me every instance of “voice” and "nice" and “office” etc., too, and I'm not scrolling through all that 🙄 and neither of the reference sites I like to use have a page number listed for him getting his signet or the first time it’s mentioned. as another aside: look how gorgeous Ridoc is here. smash. EDIT TO ADD: it is mentioned in Fourth Wing, in one line on page 289 (as identified by @hockeyspiral23 - thank you!) but he doesn't actually use it. no wonder my adhd brain forgot about it when there were bigger issues at hand lol they also pointed out that it could still have been a mistake, if RY meant to have it be another one of the barely-mentioned marked riders who aren't part of the main gang, as ice-wielding is "a common signet" (FW p. 289), and there were a few students we never really met apart from Resson (including Masen and Soleil. RIP.) so it could have been one of them. another possible explanation that I just came up with for the mistake category -- unreliable narrator? the events of that day were incredibly distressing for Vi, and she literally gets poisoned and loses consciousness and doesn't wake up for three days (following the theory that FW and IF are her diary, written in an ancient language and translated by Jesinia later) so it could have been a blur / hard to remember and VIOLET could have gotten it wrong. If I were RY, and it was a genuine mistake, this is the explanation I would give lmao

two: Deigh meaning ice is another tally in the “not a mistake” column.

RY likes to have the dragons' names refer to their current rider's signets. (Tairn = thunder, Aimsir = weather...) but not all of them match (Tiene = fire, I think, and Mira makes shields.) Liam and the ice is only mentioned once, at Resson, but there are many characters who we don't see getting their signet -- really just Vi's sex-induced lightning, and a mention of Sawyer nearly killing someone in a swordfight on accident. and Sloane's siphoning, too. okay, maybe this isn't a great point. but I still want to hear how they figured these things out! especially Bodhi. and Xaden's second one. poor thing couldn't tell anyone, even his best friend, and had to figure out how to manage it entirely on his own (he had Sgaeyl, but that's it.) and maybe Liam didn’t realize he had the ice until Resson, and just started slinging icicles at the wyvern once he figured out that he could. though that's kinda unlikely, I guess, since he would have channeled in November or December and Resson wasn't until July... hm.

three: Deigh could have been the dragon of Liam's relative, giving him a second signet like Xaden has with Sgaeyl.

it’s my understanding that Liam, like all the marked ones (except my addition of Darling and her little sibs) were military kids, and his mom is mentioned in IF as being the one to weave the protection runes, which I believe requires a level of magic that only a rider would have. so he has at least one relative who was a rider, and therefore probably more. ngl, at first I thought it was mad suspicious that his parents were executed separately from everyone else’s, but then we didn’t meet them in Aretia, so I guess they really are dead. but how mf heartbreaking would it be if they were alive -- and the first time they see their son in a whole year of him being gone at Basgiath, it’s Xaden carrying his body into the fortress 😭 and Vi and X crying and apologizing to Mama Mairi for not being able to save him… I’M SO SORRY. IT JUST CAME TO ME, AND I HAD TO WRITE IT DOWN. if any FW writer wants to write that AU, go for it. we could all use another good cry. there seems to be a trend of the dragons who had Tyrrish riders purposely (and "illegally") bonding the descendants of their previous riders. - Xaden has a second signet from Sgaeyl as his grandfather was one of her former riders, allegedly, but he "didn't make it out of the quadrant"? so he had a kid (Fen, Xaden's dad?) before graduating? is that why Xaden mentions that his dad hated dragon riders in one of his letters to Vi? - and then I believe Imogen has the dragon of a relative, but not a direct relative, so she doesn't have a second signet, but the one she does have is just really strong? I feel like they glossed over that a little too quickly, and it remains unclear to me how that whole thing works. - and now maybe Liam, too?

I might tack more stuff on below as it comes to me, or RB with commentary, but I think that's all I've got for now.

but regardless of if it was a mistake or not, I’m not planning on putting it in Liam and Spark’s story — just his farsight, which is confirmed multiple times. if Spark believed in the gods, she’d thank them for not giving him something as destructive and deadly as her water, but Li’s still gonna have some issues with it, because I feel the need to project my issues onto my fave characters, and everyone loves some mild hurt/comfort that’s resolved with cuddles and a nap, right? 🥰

helloooo :3, of course!! heres some off the top of my head lmao (all if tyler was real):

- tyler can fall asleep ANYWHERE, especially public transport which means he has missed a lot of shifts at work lmao. he just gets on the bus, puts his feet up on the seats and is out like a light. the narrator is really jealous of him for this and tyler is always like “man, i don’t get how you can’t just go to sleep it’s so easy”

- he loves music and will listen to just about anything. he has mixtapes but not many (he just listens to albums) and they are not organised by genre or anything so he will get three of the most random songs in a row. like going from beethoven’s seventh symphony , to bikini kill, to destiny’s child.

- this is a huge headcannon which isn’t based in anything at all BUT i like to think tyler is a batman fan (specifically the comics). when tyler was younger, like late childhood and early teens, i think he was kind of a loner and went to the comic book store most days after school, or sometimes skip school all together, to just go and read all of the comics that he couldn’t afford. his fav is ‘the dark knight returns’ by frank miller, because of the gay subtext that he kind of connected with? and he either bought it or took it. it’s still in the paper street house somewhere, like in his closet or bedside table or something. (i have never read the dark knight returns, just to be clear, i am just aware of it 😭)

- tyler has a MAJOR sweet tooth. i am a firm believer that he only chews fruit flavoured gum, would be a big fan of candy and this is random but i feel like he would use bubblegum flavoured toothpaste 😭 he would use the excuse that it’s cheaper and “it has the same chemicals and shit as the adult one” but in reality he just likes the taste.

- he is definitely some type of neurodivergent (i’m leaning towards adhd and high functioning autism?)

- tyler HATES when the narrator has to go on work trips. i literally can not stress enough how much he wants to crawl out of his skin when the narrator has to leave him. he tries to not show how much it bothers him but the narrator can tell something is up. so i like to imagine one day is like “tyler i have to fly out tomorrow, i should be back on friday morning :(“ and tyler is just not looking at him like “yeah okay cool, whatever” then is just kind of being cold and distant with the narrator untill he leaves for his flight. the narrator would be all up in his head thinking about why tyler was being so weird, he’s sat in his seat on the airplane and tyler just shows up like “hey, you’re hot, mind if i sit down?” and the narrator is just like “TYLER 🤯🤯🤯”

Hello, Anon! Thank you for bringing such a interesting question!

It really depends on what the story focus is and how deep the author or creator would want to dive in. I’ve always seen Ink’s soullessness as a metaphor for being autistic (due to the fact that the monster are canonically prejudice against those who are neurodivergent. Example being Papyrus) so if he was a human, I’d keep him as autistic as his traits would be the same. I think his “vials” would be more centered around his art and hyper fixations. However, if you want to go the medication route for the vials, him additionally having chronic depression is also an option.

His vials could be represented through anti-depressants and mood stabilizers so when he doesn’t take his meds, he becomes a shell and apathetic. I’d still likely keep him either ADHD or autistic or even both along with the depression, as they follow up his other symptoms and traits.

However, I know some people don’t like diving too deep into mental health topics- which in that case, Ink could simply be someone with a low understanding of social cues and emotions. His vials once again could be his art and bring him happiness and feelings, and if he doesn’t have that, he feels an empty and sad as it’s his main coping mechanism. Mental health is still a topic, but it’s less so- and he’s more a person who is socially inept with a specific coping mechanism. Even people without disorders or mental illnesses have coping mechanisms, so it wouldn’t be far off to have him cling to one as well.

What inspired you to write the fic this way?

i wanted to mix up the usual Breakdown hurt/comfort trope and show it through the eyes of the partner to explore the impact of having to watch someone you love suffer alone like that. it also was a real Choice for me to write established pairing but i did really want to focus on sanji's struggle with what's happening to him without having unnecessary distractions around the state of their relationship yknow? for once in my fic-writing career i did Not want the useless miscommunication lmao i wanted their feelings and care to be on the table from the top

my brand of adhd mostly prevents me from listening to music while writing, and i dont process lyrics when i listen in general so i never have playlists or anything either unfortch. but purely vibes based the first artist that came to mind was leon bridges, just the kind of slow, sweet style of his gives me the same syrupy feeling as this fic. the honest realest answer is IRIS BY THE GOO GOO DOLLS that's thee ttyds anthem to me. and also my most favourite song on earth forever

It’s a strong one. Different. If you have a childhood best buddy and managed to keep them for this long, and likely lifelong that’s an indescribable force.There’s a level of closeness there that’s just sort of inherent but would be weird if it was with anyone else— but at the same time is unnoticeable.

i don't know if you answer asks but you're one of the few blogs still consistently posting pjo tv crit and it's been such a relief. with the amount of praise it's gotten i feel so gaslit like am i just being a baseless hater?? but no there's a reason a lot of the people criticizing the show are writers. it's a poorly written show and the more i think about it the more problems i find

like i was thinking about the way the kids in the show just know everything and how boring it is to watch, especially the casino scene, and something hit me

the lotus casino functions perfectly as a metaphor for traits associated with adhd--the need for stimulation and time blindness. anyone would fall for the casino's lure, but especially adhd kids. the fact that the show takes that away is REALLY weird to me, to put it kindly

if i were being less kind? i would say there's grounds to argue that having these characters, who are children with adhd, be impervious to something that is designed to trap people exactly like them is, on some level, erasure of their disabilities. especially since the one character who does get affected by it is the one who doesn't have the same neurodivergencies as the two who don't. the explanation for why percy and annabeth didn't start to forget themselves was such a lazy cop out and i can't believe people ate it up

i’m so glad to hear it anon!! i’m a little surprised to hear it too tbh, i wasn’t sure if anyone else was still. interested in discussing it? it seems like the pjo/atla fanbase overlap means most people have moved onto to the live action atla show. and while i am an atla fan, i didn’t grow up with the show the same way i grew up with the pjo books, so based on what we’d already seen/heard of the natla show before it even released + my utter disappointment and heartbreak regarding the pjo show, i decided to spare myself the watch. i would rather keep my memories of the original show untainted; what i have seen of the show resonates with people’s criticisms of the writing (and as someone who has done costuming work. one look is all you need to understand THAT criticism lmfao).

but i’m honestly… surprised? the pjo show did not get the same level of criticism as the natla show? it’s not like pjo is not also very popular with that same generation, sure, atla being a show perhaps made it more appealing and accessible to more kids, etc etc, sure. but from the fan bases themselves, size aside? proportionately? the pjo fandom is FULL of show defenders just blatantly ignoring the show’s major foundational issues if not just outright parading them around as successes, meanwhile the critics are in the minority. compare that with what i’ve seen where the complete opposite is true of the atla fandom, it’s weird!! and especially jarring to me bc it seemed pretty clear to everyone in the atla fandom the show had Issues, meanwhile the pjo fandom heard the promise from rick riordan’s very own mouth this show is going to be faithful to the series’ spirit. it’s so weird to see the wildly different responses to what i think are prolly equally bad reboot shows, with a fandom of similar demographics (clearly not the SAME demographics or the response would prolly be more aligned but you get my point). so i agree anon, i do feel a little gaslit by the pjo fandom, and watching the atla fandom’s very reasonable response to the natla show is like. whiplash. another sign you and i are not losing it lmao

as for the lotus casino, this is an excellent point! i don’t even think it can be called unkind to point out how this episode is a symptom of the show’s overall disability erasure. i would say it’s unkind of the show to erase adhd and dyslexia representation. in fact, because of the explicit promise by its creator to see that representation, i would go as far as to call it cruel to then erase it. if anything, based on rick’s promises to add more representation, i was hoping for elements like autistic annabeth confirmation, since when pjo was first written, it was based off rick’s son and his friends who were all ND, and at the time it wasn’t thought to be possible to be AuDHD, but likely some of those kids probably were (and that then made its way into the books in characters like annabeth!). that would have been the perfect opportunity to add something with the foresight of modern times, but instead we got… absolutely no disability rep from the show aside from a few short lines of dialogue as a lame-ass bone-toss to the book fans.

the pjo show’s biggest crime is its lack of spirit of the original book series, and that book series cradled myself and every other ND child or child in an abusive situation who read it. it offered us a mother who never got angry with us when we showed “difficult” symptoms. it offered us camp half-blood, the idea of a place, a home, where people like us were not just accepted, but thrived. it offered us a new world. it offered us a friend in percy jackson. i do not feel the show truly offers anything substantial. it only takes.

I’ve been dx w adhd several times but this one doctor who was very unprofessional told me I couldn’t have it due to my weight which is the most ridiculous shit I’ve ever heard in my life I have every single symptom imaginable but he really had the nerve to say he’s never had a patient my weight lmao. he did say I have autism which I agree with but I also don’t like using his dx if that makes sense bc I don’t wanna think of him. He’s also a family friend and didn’t charge us and is in another country so same rules do not apply there.
