As you tread carefully along the dimly lit sidewalk toward your apartment, you wrapped your arms tightly around yourself, seeking warmth from the biting chill of the night. The hour was late; the roads were deserted, not a single vehicle in sight, and the absence of life around you heightened the sense of isolation. Working the closing shift had left you with the unsettling task of walking home alone in the dark—a decision that felt increasingly unwise with each passing moment. Yet, the lure of extra income was too tempting to resist. Living solo and managing the costs of rent was a constant struggle, and you were barely making ends meet.
You shivered, instinctively rubbing your arms to generate warmth as you walked, your eyes darting around for any lurking threats that might be stalking the vulnerable—like you. Just as you started to relax, convinced there was nothing amiss, your senses remained on high alert.
Before you fully grasped the situation, you found yourself yanked into a shadowy alley and forcefully pressed against a brick wall, your head crashing against it. The world started to swirl around you, and a low groan escaped your lips as you struggled to focus on the figure standing before you. With your head pounding and your ears ringing, a male voice gradually broke through the fog in your mind, barely reaching your awareness.
"Are you listening? I said give me your fucking wallet!" he hissed, pressing something cold to your neck.
You blinked, trying to gather your bearings and carefully deciding your next moves. Cursing under your breath, you held your hands up in surrender. "Fuck man! It's in my right pocket!"
Your attacker pressed the sharp tip of a knife against your throat, while his other hand rummaged through your pocket for your wallet. He lacked caution, and you winced as you felt warm blood begin to trickle down your neck and chest. It felt inevitable, a grim reality you had anticipated. Anger mixed with despair bubbled within you as you realized the repercussions—how would you manage to pay this month’s rent? Meanwhile, the flicker of defiance sparked in your mind, but you questioned your chances against a blade. The odds were stacked harshly against you.
The man in front of you muttered curses under his breath while frantically searching for your wallet, his intense focus momentarily easing the pressure on your neck. This was your chance. You swiftly drove your knee into him, striking him between the legs. He gasped and staggered back, clearly taken off guard. Seizing the opportunity, you bolted out of the dark alley and onto the sidewalk. For a fleeting moment, you contemplated yelling for help, but the late hour reassured you that everyone was likely sound asleep, oblivious to your plight.
Your lungs screamed with exertion as you raced across the street, desperately trying to put space between yourself and your attacker. To your shock, he recovered quickly from the blow and was close on your heels. Distracted by your fear, you failed to see the person in front of you and collided with their chest, stumbling backward with a startled yelp. You immediately began to apologize as you hurriedly scrambled to your feet.
You narrowed your eyes in disbelief as you faced an unexpected figure: a man clad in a striking black and white clown costume. His face wore an emotionless expression, and a black trash bag was slung casually over his shoulder. Despite your instinctive skepticism about this peculiar stranger, desperation drove you to seek his assistance in escaping the knife-wielding pursuer behind you. After all, how threatening could a clown really be?
"Please, I need help! T-there's a guy chasing me-"
“Hey!” Your pursuer has finally caught up, slowing down to a jog behind you. He glanced between you and the clown, donning an innocent smile while concealing the knife behind his back. “Why did you run away? Come here,” he called out, attempting to lure you closer with his free hand, pretending to be your friend.
You stood your ground beside the enigmatic clown, clinging to the hope that he was merely an ordinary person who would come to your aid. You could almost see the gears whirring in his mind as he glanced back and forth between you and your assailant, seemingly grasping the gravity of the situation. A wave of unease washed over you when a sinister grin crept across his face, and without warning, he dropped the trash bag, letting it fall with a series of unsettling clatters. Your attacker, now visibly confused, appeared to lose patience as he brandished the knife threateningly in front of him.
"Listen, if you both don't give me your money now you'll regret it," he threatened, inching closer.
The clown raised a finger, signaling for everyone to hold on, before eagerly rummaging through his trash bag, clearly searching for something particular. You instinctively stepped back from the unfolding scene, your heart pounding in your chest. Uncertainty gripped you; all you wanted was to return to your run-down apartment and sink into the solace of sleep.
The clown retrieved an object from the bag but swiftly concealed it behind his back, wagging a finger at your attacker while beckoning him to approach. With a mix of caution and curiosity, the attacker stepped closer, attempting to catch a glimpse of what the clown was hiding.
In an instant, all that met your senses was the sight of the clown swinging, the vivid red splattering across the scene, and the horrifying sound of a skull cracking. You gasped, recoiling as warm crimson droplets splashed onto your face. With a trembling hand, you brushed one of the blood droplets from your cheek, only to grimace at the deep stains now marking your skin.
You stood frozen in horror as your attacker staggered backward, collapsing onto the ground. The knife slipped from his hand, clattering away in the chaos. He let out a cry, desperately cradling his head with trembling hands. Meanwhile, the clown stood over him, a sinister smile playing on his lips, reveling in the scene before him. A chilling uncertainty gripped you—who was more terrifying? You took careful steps backward, your eyes fixated on the clown, who loomed menacingly over the fallen man, gripping a hammer with eerie satisfaction.
Without a moment's pause, the clown lifted the hammer and brought it crashing down onto your attacker's skull with a sickening crunch. Blood splattered across the sidewalk, forcing you to fight the urge to vomit at the gruesome sight. You turned your gaze away, unaware of the tears streaming down your cheeks, mingling with the blood droplets. All around you echoed the horrifying sound of bone shattering; the victim's screams had long since subsided. In that chilling moment, a fleeting thought crossed your mind: Would you be considered a suspect in his murder?
A sudden tap on your shoulder made you jump, and you turned to confront the clown, whose makeup now bore red splashes against the stark white. Every instinct screamed for you to flee, to escape as far as you could, yet you remained frozen, your eyes wide in terror.
Your mind lagged far behind, preoccupied with the recent events, barely noticing the clown taking your hand and placing something soft in your palm. As you glanced down, you found a small rag. The clown then gestured to his own face, making a wiping motion.
"Oh… t-thanks." You murmured softly, swiping the cloth across your cheeks to remove the blood splatters. For reasons unknown, you glanced at the clown, raising your brows in silent question, as if seeking confirmation that you had cleaned yourself thoroughly.
He placed his finger on his chin, tilting his head thoughtfully from side to side before finally taking the cloth from your hands. You held your breath as he began to reach for your face. His touch was feather-light as he delicately wiped away the spots you had overlooked. That mischievous grin returned, and he nodded in satisfaction at his handiwork.
You stood in both shock and confusion before finally breaking the silence.
"Um… thanks? For helping me."
The clown waved his hand dismissively in front of him while shaking his head, 'no problem'. You couldn't help but notice how incredibly expressive he was with his body language. While everyone around you would likely have told you to be terrified of him—or even suggested you call the cops after witnessing him murder a man without a shred of remorse—you found yourself feeling a strange sense of gratitude for what he had done, plus the man was intending to rob you and, in your mind, somehow had it coming. In a moment of surprising courage, this gratitude outweighed your fear, leading you to invite the clown to the nearby 24-hour pizza place for a meal, a decision that felt both reckless and oddly thrilling.

Gaza is NOT an excuse to sit out this election
I don't usually post about politics on this blog (if anything I try to avoid it since I know it can be a distressing topic) but, to be honest, the upcoming U.S. presidential election has me concerned.
This is going to be one of, if not THE most globally consequential election of our time, and I have been deeply perturbed to see people spreading sentiment that sitting this vote out (or even voting for Trump) is justified by the Democratic Party's handling of the genocide in Gaza.
I was going to write a post about why I think that's really dangerous and irresponsible rhetoric, but then U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders came out and said the same things far better so I'm going to share his video, and some key quotes:
youtube
"SOME of you are saying: "How can I vote for Kamala Harris if she is supporting this terrible war?" And that is a very fair question. And let me give you my best answer. AND that is that, even on this issue, Donald Trump and his right-wing friends are worse. In the Senate, in Congress, the Republicans have worked overtime to block humanitarian aid to the starving children in Gaza. [Current President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris] support getting as much humanitarian aid into Gaza as soon as possible. TRUMP has said Netanyahu is "doing a good job." And has said Biden is holding him back. [Trump] has suggested that the Gaza Strip would make excellent beachfront property for development. [...] AFTER Kamala wins, we will together do everything we can to change U.S. policy towards Netanyahu: An immediate ceasefire, the return of all hostages, a surge of massive humanitarian aid, the stopping of settler attacks on the West Bank, and the rebuilding of Gaza for the Palestinian people. AND let me be clear: We will have, in my view, a much better chance of changing U.S. policy with [Kamala Harris] than with [Donald Trump], who is extremely close to Netanyahu and sees him as a like-minded, right-wing extremist ally. [...] AS important as Gaza is [...] it is not the only issue at stake in this election. IF Trump wins, women in this country will suffer an enormous setback and lose the ability to control their own bodies. [...] IF Trump wins, to be honest with you, the struggle against climate change is over. [...] Trump believes [climate change] is a hoax. And if the United States, the largest economy in the world, stops transforming our energy system away from fossil fuel, every other country, China, Europe, all over the world, they will do exactly the same thing. And God only knows the kind of planet we will leave to our kids and future generations."
And now I am going to editorialise a few more points:
Firstly, I want to emphasise that the upcoming election is about damage control and harm reduction, not about political allegiance or moral purity. The point of casting your vote is not to signal support for a candidate, but to cancel out a vote for the more damaging candidate by voting for their opposition in the two party system. Let me be clear on that: under the U.S.'s current first-past-the-post voting arrangement, voting for a minor third party or independent is functionally useless during an election of this magnitude. It is a symbolic gesture that's functionally and morally equivalent to sitting out.
Story time: I come from a country which uses a preferential ranked-choice system and where voting is compulsory for all eligible citizens (a system which lowers campaign costs, incentivizes governments to make voting more accessible country-wide and limits attempts at voter suppression not that right-wing parties haven't tried). Despite us actually having a few substantial progressive third parties, there have been several times where I've sucked it up and voted for the major centrist party specifically to keep the major conservative right-wing party from gaining or maintaining power. We call this vote-them-out and keep-them-out politics - it's pretty much the default approach here, and it should be yours too because the idea of a "perfect party" is a fallacy. When human rights are on the line, pick the least-worst major option. The aim is to cancel out a vote for the other guy. Even with this, we recently lost our state to the major conservative-right party (running on a platform of youth-criminalization and abortion-bans) by a mere 8 percent margin - just in case you want evidence of how much impact a small number of votes can make, and how dangerous it can be to get complacent.
Secondly, for those Americans who still believe that not voting will keep you from being complicit in the Genocide in Gaza. Let me speak to you as a White Australian: you are already complicit in and benefiting from a genocide. Multiple, in fact. You and I both live, learn, work and profit on land that was forcibly seized through the murder and dispossession of First Nations peoples, similar to how Palestinians are being murdered and dispossessed of their land right now. When you enjoy chocolate and vanilla, you are benefiting from spices that were brought to the Global West via the colonization of Latin America, and that were historically (and in chocolate's case still is) cultivated by enslaved people. The phone/tablet/computer you are reading this post on is likely made using conflict minerals. I'm sorry, but you don't get to wring your hands over Gaza at a distance and pretend that sitting this vote out absolves you of genocide, while ignoring the ones your (and my) ancestors committed to bring you that luxury. You just don't. And again, as Senator Sanders said, Trump wants to bulldoze Gaza and turn it into Netanyahu's beachfront property development. You don't get to pretend that standing aside and knowingly letting someone else vote for him to do that is the more moral option.
Thirdly I want to point to that last part that I highlighted in Senator Sander's speech. I am not a USAmerican, but this election scares me because of America's global impact. If you are an American voter reading this, you need to understand that your country is too globally influential for you to neglect your civic responsibilities. I was working as a member of my country's national public service under a right-wing government during the Trump era and things got bad. A woman was raped inside Parliament House, video emerged of male staffers masturbating on female colleagues' desks and our then-Prime Minister quipped that it was a "triumph of democracy" that the women who marched in protest weren't "met with bullets". There was the same sort of culture-war mismanagement and misinformation about COVID-19, there were Neo-Nazis, and there was a failure to properly condemn or correct either of those things. Progress towards sustainability and clean energy slowed, and our Prime Minister secretly tried to seize personal control over five separate government departments. Sure, some of that would have happened with or without a Trump administration after all, we didn't need a Republican U.S. President to produce an onion-eating misogynist who hates homosexuals despite his own sister being one but the rest of the world looks to the U.S. to set the tone on what is acceptable in government. When the largest country votes in (or sits aside and lets other people vote in) someone as egocentric, openly prejudiced, corrupt, anti-science, greed-motivated, war-hungry, and dictatorially-minded as Donald Trump, it signals to other leaders that that is the acceptable standard. Even when it's absolutely not. When you choose to sit out (or cast a meaningless symbolic vote) rather than effectively use your civic power as a U.S. citizen, the outcome affects millions of global citizens who never had the option of giving their input.
Finally, I want you to listen to this podcast by Dr Robin DiAngelo and think about what the choice to waste your vote signals to the people around you. To the members of your community who are women, BIPOC, LGBT+, disabled, have migrant parents or who live countries that are effected by American policy (which is all of them, by the way. Y'all are big). We are not asking much from you. Queue for a slightly-annoying amount of time, get your identity confirmed at a sign-in table and then cast a ballot. Tick a box that indicates you'd rather let a qualified centre-left attorney and former senator have a chance of improving things, instead of a dictator-lionizing convicted felon who openly wants dismantle voting systems so that he'll never lose again. That's it. Get yourself to a polling booth and tick a box. We are not asking you to make an effort. We are not asking you to volunteer. We are not asking you run petitions, or call representatives or donate money or do meal deliveries or any kind of community work. Just tick a box. Vote. Anonymously. No one even needs to know what box you ticked.
If that is too much to ask of you, then what right do you have to call yourself any kind of ally? Think about the enormous privilege you are displaying by deciding that you can neglect this, and the fragility you are showing by deciding that a simple anonymous vote is too morally taxing. What reason would we have to ever believe you'd help us compromise on future solutions when you've shown you'd rather throw away possibly the last meaningful vote you may ever get on a Nirvana Fallacy? Why would we ever believe that we could rely on you to help or defend us when you couldn't even work up the courage and stamina to tick a box?
If that's too much for you, then fine. You're a coward, but fine. Just don't pretend to be anything else. And certainly don't hide behind the actual, ongoing suffering of real people as justification for your civic negligence. Do not use Gaza as an excuse to sit out this November 5th.
This website provides information on how to check your registration, register if you haven't, and find a polling booth. So does this one.
Do your duty. Get yourself ready. Go vote.
Then buy yourself some ethical chocolate to wash the bad taste out of your mouth.

wi papa look a thing there for me. awa.
prefacing this with a PSA that i'm going to try and keep short but basically regardless of anything i say here let me make it known that i do believe he should apologize. whether or not he's still actively saying that word in 2024 it is something he's used in the past even if he isn't performing said play anymore/saying things like that so flippantly. granted if he does apologize there's always going to be a section of fandom that's like 'he only apologized bc he got caught' yes?????????? that's what always happens????????? lbr you're not going to get on IG and announce you killed your ex two decades ago and you'll be turning yourself in when there's an entire true crime community in the depths of the internet who will dig up the cold case + the suspiciously convenient alibi anyway without you lifting a finger. politicians who get called out for blackface in college do not go around telling people they did blackface in college. celebrities who were homophobic on this hellsite in high school back in the early 10s before they realized they were gay are not going to let you know what their handle was. this is how the world works.
that being said i must confess i caught wind of the stirrings of this a bit early bc during the clusterfuck that was the Jam vs Zamasian RPF poll (i did not go in the notes. rancid ass shit) someone had taken a screenshot of a reblog made as a 'gotcha' to Zamasian voters by implying that they were anti-Black for voting for a ship featuring an actor that said the n-word in a play he hasn't performed for several decades since, with a short taped example that the general public was not going to know how to find unless they were on a mission. i poked around, saw a couple hints here and there that implied that the clip actually existed, marked that down for future ref and went about my business. disappointing? sure. run of the mill especially among people his age in the industry from that time period who are perceived to benefit from white privilege? absolutely. the former bird identified app dragging all of this back into the light (including the interview with Chris Rock. which i have not seen though there's no way it was within the last few years for AMC to still hire Eric if they had seen it. correct me if i'm wrong pls) is unexpected but tracks for the fandom on there.
generally i don't believe in cancelling someone for things they said or did more than ten years ago if they are no longer the same person they were back then. i don't believe Jacob or Assad or any one of the staff of color who may have been working behind the scenes would have agreed to continue interacting with Eric if he had the same attitude as he did when he first wrote and performed the play. i don't believe his Black comedian niece would continue to talk about him and share photos with him if he was calling her or the Black side of her family the n-word. i am willing to give the 'Eric Bogosian n-word' reply tweet he reportedly made before deleting it shortly after the brief benefit of the doubt bc it was 1. supposedly under someone else's tweet talking about the play incident and 2. i cannot count how many times i have accidently commented/almost posted something on here or YouTube or Reddit or ao3 bc i was on mobile and once the keyboard's open the app/browser flips the fuck out and puts the search bar and the comment box too close together. now if his ass shows up and shows out and stands ten toes down while he's currently on time-out or doesn't address any of this we're dealing with a different story. if more examples of him acting like this come out i'll drop him faster than you can call the election it will be that serious.
anyway for now i'm choosing to keep an eye on this while acknowledging that us Black folks do have the right to be upset and pissed as fuck. we deal with enough racism/microaggressions in fandom spaces as it is we definitely don't need new ones, and we don't need them from the past career choice of the main cast of a show a lot of us enjoy. amen

honestly it's pretty funny to me when people harp on Jiang Cheng (of all people) for not "defending" the Wen Remnants and pretend that the noble and upstanding Hanguang-jun absolutely did, when in canon, this is what he says in public:
Tumblr media
"How dare you say that Wei Ying would ever disrespect his shidi" like there's so much to unpack here considering his OWN brother was defending Wen Qing more at that point in time.
Tumblr media
Granted Nie Mingjue yells over him and everyone starts chiming in and then Jin Guangshan starts targeting Jiang Cheng's insecurities, but also??? The narrative surrounding Lan Wangji is so funny. Man doesn't do a single thing here apart from going "well WY would never" (there are other concerns????) and then he zones tf out until Mianmian storms out and then follows her out.
Like.

There's been an ask in my inbox for the last couple of days that I haven't answered because I feel like it's purposely trying to disparage the autistic community, and frankly I was unwilling to give in to the rage-baiting. But it did sort of bring up an interesting point and after some thought, I think I need to address it.
It's not really any of my business nor is it my place to cast judgment on people who reclaim the r-slur. Yes, it's been used pejoratively against me in the past, but I'm not a member of the neurodiverse communities that it is more commonly used against so honestly I don't think I really get an opinion on how they see fit to use it. If people want to reclaim it, let them be. If people don't, well then they don't. Let them also be.
That being said, however, I am a member of the physically disabled community and there's been a big push for people to reclaim the term cripple. That's fine. Some people still don't like using the word. That's also fine. No one is wrong, and it's not my place to tell anyone that they are unless maybe they are using it in an ableist way.
And because the person in my inbox decided to bring it up, yes the same goes for the reclamation of the word queer. Some people use it, some people don't. That's absolutely fine.
What is not fine is coming onto people's blogs and trying to spread discourse just because you don't like the way some people use language in their own community.
You don't get to decide what words people can or cannot be offended by in their communities, and you don't get to try and make other people decide either.

ok nah, fuck it... gonna make an actual post & tag it properly so people see it, because this feels like it should be a common courtesy
Authors who write x reader or self-insert fics, please specify the reader's intended gender/sex/pronouns at the start, for the sake of the fic, comfort of the reader, and comfort of anyone browsing your work
Even if you write primarily for a female audience, knowing this beforehand would save me (and others!) a lot of discomfort so I'm not blindsided by feminine pet names and terminology in a fic that I (wrongfully) assumed was gender-neutral because no gender or pronouns were specified
Being consistent and specifying this stuff also makes it so much easier for me to filter out content I don't want to see so I don't have to block whole blogs just to get it out of my feed

look the thing about harry potter is that i don't actually care what you do with it. i, and others, can ask you to leave it in the past all i want, but fundamentally i don't know you and i can't stop you from doing anything if you want to buy harry potter merch or even just keep reading the books or whatever. but on the other side of that, if you're still doing those things in 2024, especially if you've got your hogwarts house in your bio, you're still engaging with it publicly, i will not trust you and probably won't want to interact with you, irl or online. especially if you're not from the uk, because at the end of the day she's doing the most damage here.
but also - you don't have to announce that you still do those things! if you don't actively engage with the fandom anymore or buy anything but you still rewatch the movies or reread your copies of the books you don't have to tell everyone you're doing that. you do you, random stranger on the internet, but i won't trust you, and i can only speak for myself but if you feel the need to announce and ask for absolution for still liking harry potter you're not gonna get it from me. work through that yourself

why cant transmascs use the t slur? we're all transgender whether we're nonbinary, trans men, agender, transfemme, trans women or whatever. why does the assigned birth gender matter? we've all experienced transphobia and the t slur is used the same against transmascs as it is transfemmes.
yes, we have all experienced transphobia, you’re right! can you guess what we haven’t all experienced though?
that’s right, transmisogyny! while all trans people do face transphobia, trans women & transfems face a unique intersection of transphobia & misogyny greater than the sum of its parts. I don’t say that to downplay transphobia - transphobia is dangerous & horrrible to experience, genuinely.
when you are in a community with many different people, sometimes you share one axis of oppression with some people, but they may experience a different type of oppression too, one that you don’t experience. that doesn’t mean that you stop experiencing the type of oppression that you share with them, it just means that they experience other forms of oppression, and sometimes those are connected to each other. sharing one form of oppression with someone doesn’t give you the experience of other forms of oppression that person has.
for example: all non-straight people experience homophobia. all women experience misogyny. as a lesbian, I get both homophobia and misogyny directed at me, & where those two things intersect, I experience lesbophobia. this doesn’t mean that every time I experience oppression, it’s automatically lesbophobia - sometimes it is “just” homophobia or “just” misogyny. I share the experience of misogyny with cis & trans women of all sexualities. I share the experience of homophobia with gay & bi people of all genders. the fact that I am a target of lesbophobia doesn’t make the homophobia that a gay man experiences any less dangerous or awful; it would still be inappropriate for him to reclaim the word dyke for himself, because that word was never meant as a slur against him. the fact that I experience lesbophobia doesn’t make the misogyny a straight woman faces any less dangerous or awful, but it would still be inappropriate for her to call herself a dyke.
the t slur originated as a hateful term used against trans women. when it is used towards tme people, it is not meant as an insult for being transmasc, it is meant to insult us by grouping us in with trans women. do you see why it’s different for someone affected by transmisogyny to reclaim a transmisogynistic slur than it is for someone who is not affected by transmisogyny to use it?
you sound young so I am genuinely trying to explain here. I’m not your dad, I can’t tell you what words you can or cannot say, you are a complete stranger to me. I’m just letting you know that when you use a slur that is not targeted at you, the people around you who are targeted by that slur will probably feel less safe around you, & a lot of people around you will probably think you sound like an asshole.

honestly I will probably get burnt at the stake for this but like. This is Wei Wuxian describing Lan Wangji. And honestly, keeping in mind that Wei Wuxian himself very much lost his parents and his coping mechanism was fake it (laugh) until you make it, I can't. What's wrong with him. "Can't be saved no matter how pretty you are"??? Wei Wuxian?????
