i think queer discourse has an addictive quality in the way that anger is addicting. i struggle with anger issues myself and this was something that was and still is really hard for me to balance. how much of my engagement in queer theory is actually in the theory vs how much of it is getting into arguments that are bad faith from the beginning with people who do not respect [insert discourse topic du jour here] as real theory or real people to begin with.

and that like. drags you fucking down, you know? i get anxious, all the time, and my partner has to be like "you need to take a break" for it to hit that im developing an unhealthy relationship with theory on tumblr, specifically. and that's even with me ACTIVELY AVOIDING tags related to t/ransandrophobia and exclusively engaging w it via people whos opinions i respect directly. it's way harder when you actively trawl those tags.

what im getting at is that to other people that trawl those tags the same way, the aforementioned Bad Faith Argument Havers, when they see you there frequently you get a reputation as someone who is looking for fights to get into. which is kinda shitty tbh on their end to then be like "i know who you are" all judgemental and shit when they at the Very Least also follow people that actively stir up shit in the tags on purpose. which isnt really what you do, you respond in kind, i think? or thats my perception of it, at least.

It really could be something totally unrelated.

if you're not, and you're just asking because you're under the impression that queer is an inherently harmful term: it's not. it has a history as a slur, yes, but you'd be hard-pressed to find an alternative that doesn't - I personally primarily heard gay as a slur growing up, and only heard queer when I was older, as an identity or blanket term for the whole community. your experience might be different, and that's fine, but it doesn't mean queer is always wrong to use. some people don't identify with the word queer - but other people do, including myself. irl pride events that I've been to have used the word queer just as freely and proudly as they've used the terms gay and lgbt. queer studies is an academic field. as an archaeologist/someone who works in museums, I would consider queer to be the most useful term that we have in discussing the identities of people from the past who would not identify with more specific modern labels, or whose identities we can't pinpoint for sure. it's broad, inclusive, and carries the sense of going agaist hetero/cis/amatonormativity. there's a lot more history here which I won't lecture you on, but queer certainly has a long history of self-identity alongside its use as a slur.

seeing as this is my dr who blog, and I'm assuming you were prompted to send this by the poll I reblogged earlier - it's also a term I find useful in talking about dr who. first of all in talking about the doctor themselves - because they're a queer character from an out of universe perspective, but how do you put 21st century human labels on a character who's an alien, and whose conceptions of sexuality and gender surely don't line up with ours? similarly, it's also the term I tend to use when I'm talking about jamie, because he's from the 18th century. like I said before, I find queer the best label to apply to historical figures, and I apply that to talking about historical characters, too.

on the flip side, there is an association between treating queer as an unspeakable slur and terfs/other exclusionists on this site, which I'm not willing to buy into. again, it has a history as a slur, but so does almost every other term. in the interest of fairness, I'd have to be tagging them all.

if you really do have bad personal associations with the word queer, and you don't want to blacklist it yourself, or you've read all this and just disagree with me - feel free to unfollow. that's perfectly fine. if you really feel that strongly about it, following someone who self-identifies as queer and is unapologetic in using the term both personally and professionally probably isn't for you.

reading more on anti-civ anarchism that isn't anprim and how anti-civ/post-civ thought can combine with other ideologies because i genuinely find the base thesis of "life and civilization as we know it is inherently an ecological drain on the biome, including the humans within it, and as such we need to find another way" but i disagree fundamentally with the idea that there is any Perfect Past to return to or that nomadic of hunter-gatherer life is anything to romanticize. this is like blatant retvrn fash-adjacency that comes from a lack of research into the reality of pre-'civ' life and often invokes the noble savage caricature etc.

i also just think drawing a firm line on What Civilization Is does a lot of heavy lifting for anti-indigenous racist ideology by defining the pre-settler existences of indigenous people as Not Civilization, but i do see the use of defining civilization on it's own terms/how it is defined culturally even if that's a definition i disagree with

i think this is why i lean towards the vague ideology of degrowth, as it promotes the idea of using what is already existent solely rather than continual progress and expansion and creation (a thoroughly colonialist mindset and one that harms the earth + people). i think i might look more into post-civ as it seems to have developed as an ideology partially out of a desire to separate from anprim adjacent ideology.

before i come back to the dash i wanted to put out a little psa since all the m.arvel stuff is blowing up again.  i don’t care if you love or hate m.cu or the comics....i do not care.  what i do care about is the toxicity that’s put forward from people who have very strong opinions about these things.  that’s great that you have strong opinions, but i don’t want those opinions on my dash if they include ostracizing a chunk of the fandom at the same time.  i try to be a welcoming blog when it comes to both m.cu and 6.16 based muses because i’m not 100% familiar with either of those things and i don’t expect another person to be either.  i have issues with m.cu and i have issues with 6.16, but that doesn’t mean i can’t coexist with people who have a preference for one over the other.  basically this is just me saying that i spent years in the s.pn, t.w, and t1.00 fandoms, some of the most toxic bullshit fandoms on this hellsite, and i’m not spending any more of my time on here going through that on my dash again.  it’s fine to air your issues, it’s not fine to act like you’re better than another person who doesn’t share your opinion (this goes both ways - don’t be an asshole because someone dislikes a thing you like too, obviously).  if liking or disliking a film somehow changes your entire opinion about a person you should maybe take a step back from tumblr for a bit.  we’re all different, we all are here writing various characters for that reason, and we all need to accept that we have varying opinions when it comes to said characters and just move on with our day.  i promise it’s not that serious.

for one, i don’t mind people having bnha verses, as the concept of the anime is a’ight and i understand its appeal. that being said, i refuse to interact with bnha muses and the immediate fan base. it’s all rooted in some... not-so-great stuff, and by not-so-great, i mean downright vile stuff. on top of that, it reminds me of a past abuser in my life, and it is legitimately difficult for me to stomach the anime and all related media to it, as well as fan-works of it. please understand that this is content i do not want to see, and it will be blacklisted accordingly.

secondly, another important thing to address: i do not support drawing of cp or defending drawing of cp. ever. i must make note of this because some people will know that i roleplayed in the un.der.tale community many moons ago. as a result, i was pretty tight-knit with a lot of the community, including one person that has recently been outed for drawing art involving teenage characters in sexual situations. i do not approve of this. i have strong loyalty, but i also have a strong sense of morality and lines that cannot be crossed. therefore, situations like these aren’t ones that i will defend. seeing someone i once knew doing this doesn’t make me want to knee-jerk and make excuses. rather, it hurts to see it happen because this is stuff that is indefensible and it warps my view of people i once respected.

i understand biases and wanting to defend a friend that you’ve known for a long time. i get looking at people sporting red flags while wearing red-tinted glasses. it makes the flags simply look like flags. that said... please try to take the glasses off. i have respect for some of the people who are defending them, and i feel they really need to take a step back and look at this objectively. this does not look good. even if it was material on another site, it is still publicly accessible material that should have been kept under lock and key so it cannot be used by more and more abusers in a harmful manner. of course, there is also the morality of the situation, to which i say that i still don’t approve of cp whether it’s under wraps or not. i am not saying that it is okay as long as it is private, period. the reason why i bring this up is to nip an argument in the bud, one that claims this was material on a locked twitter for only certain, mature, adult eyes to see, ones that can discern fiction from reality. this was not the case. the twitter was not a locked account, and as such, the images were publicly visible. their follow-base may have been curated and particular, but everything was still out in the open. you can see in the offending screencaps that there is no lock on the offending account. everything was open. i will say that it’s clearly marked as nsfw and minor-exclusionist, but it was not under lock and key. point blank.

on the other hand, i also feel the call-out should have been done with a little more taste. reposting uncensored material of minors in sexual situations is still considered ownership and distribution of that material, and that is still wrong. that is still indefensible. this was rectified, which is a good thing, but it apparently wasn’t rectified before damage had already been done. that shit is triggering. making a point about this can be done without showing uncensored imagery of immoral material that can fuck people up mentally and emotionally. just censor the image. think before you post, and make sure that you don’t hurt the people you’re trying to protect in the crossfire. these things should be held with care; in this instance, it was not handled with care. if this is something that means as much to you as it does to me, then listen: don’t post uncensored images of triggering subject material. CENSOR IT. PERIOD.

with that out of the way, the bottom line is that people who draw and defend cp are not and will not be allowed here. i don’t care about past biases or prior interactions. if anything, it makes situations like these more devastating to learn about. at the same time, please be careful about distributing this material without taking proper action, as the consequences can be equally as brutal and triggering for survivors. a final word to leave off on is to not harass or harm any individuals involved. awareness is a good thing, but repeated harassment is not. handle the situation with the care it deserves, be informed, use your block button, and please stay safe.

i really cant formulate a solid opinion of lanque.

i dont have any beef with the character itself, and in many other contexts i could find myself being excited to see more of him! my issues are with whatpumpkins way of going about lanques announcement.

ive reblogged some posts elaborating on why it rubs me the wrong way, but long story short i just dont trust whatpumpkin to not screw this up for us. im fully aware that a lot of the problems im seeing are just in my head, but guess what? im allowed to be suspicious of peoples intentions, and im allowed to withhold faith from those who i believe unworthy of it.

so i guess with that being said, i can explain why ive been avoiding indulging in lanque related content. like i said before, i have no qualms with the character alone!!! its true that we need trans guy rep, and feminine trans men are wholly included in that necessity. im just Very iffy on reblogging content about such a character until we know more about him in canon.

my main worries are that 1. i, not being a feminine trans man, might support something offensive, and 2. i could build up my interpretation of lanque only for canon to end up being more of a disappointment (sort of like how it went with lanques leaked design).

im glad that some people are happy to see themselves in media they enjoy!!! i dont want to ruin that for them, and i think the best way to go about that is to just disengage from having many thoughts on him.
