whenever i tag things for betsywarren i just need everyone (who reads comics. my comic mutuals) to understand that i love them but only as like. a very fucked up pair. like they were so horribly toxic for each other. i don't ship them in a "they're perfect together" way unless you mean in a "they're so perfectly horrible together" way in which case yes i do. because they're not good for each other. at all. betsy literally taught warren to cage his ocd thoughts in his mind palace. warren just had sex with her when she thought too many bad thoughts. that's not normal. they're not normal. they were HORRIBLE for each other. it's delightful. i need them back together so badly so they can go fucking insane.

Goddammit, your last lanamia comic made me cry.. What master storytelling spirits are you channeling that make you know these characters better than the original writers?

Deepest apologies... I have worse planned. Poor Mia. (and Lana... but you'll see why I say poor Mia soon enough, I hope...)

As for writing characters, it really helps to talk to yourself in their "voices" to try and figure them out. Mumble to yourself when you're cooking, when you're walking and nobody's around, but also listen to people speak. When you put what you know into dialogue it sounds way less phony than if you're purely trying to advance plot with ham-fisted exposition... Though you need a bit of that too, if you're trying to drive something. It's good to write stuff down in a script, get a recording app out, say it all (put on a different voice for each character, why not?) and when you stumble over the sentences because they suck to say out loud, rewrite them so they don't. Your most powerful tool in writing speech is speaking. 

Think about the context too, it's dead important. Surrounding events and characters are what keep things grounded... Nothing exists in a vacuum. It's really useful that AA has such a packed world, with so many characters in proximity. Makes it easier to de-vacuum things. I guess the same is true for most fan works. 

Having a start and end point really helps. But, more so in a sense of "where is this character at the start of this scene, and what do they want to achieve". When you're writing "aspirationally" like this, you can get into the groove better than if you have a point A and a point B that you are looking to get to overall. And then considering the dynamics between the characters and taking that into account when understanding how those goals may be compromised, ignored, pushed for... Who has the most power in a scene generally decides what goal is pushed towards. 

Another thing is focalised narrative. Usually when I'm doing these comics (at the moment), I follow Lana, and most of the emotional core is in her reactions to things. You don't want to zero in too much to one character, or you'll end up flattening the rest, but having a core character is a good way to keep things simple. It's tempting to just chuck as many characters as you can into something, but you have to remember that you're then going to have to have them all exist... 

Also, honestly, going back to the source text plenty, and with an eye for specifics, is really useful. Take note of how characters refer to each other, which is a huge thing in AA specifically... And also what humanity is in them. For Lana, for instance, she's quite witty, and quick to make light of herself with that wittiness. ("Oh, this? I cut myself by accident. When I stabbed him, that is. I'm not very good at being a criminal, I suppose.") I try to put this slightly irritating joking into how I write her. With Ace Attorney characters, you're looking at them at very intense points in their "lives", so they're probably acting differently to normal, but picking up on these little things can make all the difference. Obviously, as well, there’s the “that… was probably why she was attracted to me” line. I take this as a reluctance to publicly acknowledge the mutuality of said attraction… (“Intellectually” seems like a Lana-ism to deflect that Ema picked up, to me. Lana doesn’t seem to be very comfortable with who she is in general. She wears her King of Prosecutors medals when Edgeworth seems to think the award is tacky, and even Manfred, obsessed with achievement and perfection, and apparently winner of multiple King awards, doesn’t display his medals. Obviously this is because when they were designed, it was before the idea of King of Prosecutors existed, but I think that Lana pinning her achievements to her chest where they can clearly be seen in order to convince to both those around her and, more pressingly, to herself, that she is competent is interesting.) Her own goals also always come second to Ema. I think she’s probably felt quite suffocated by having to spend her whole adulthood so far being a mother to her.I have a lot of thoughts on her as a character, both in the context of lanamia and outwith. She’s very compelling to me, and although most of the time when I'm drawing her, it's the "used to be so gentle, always smiling" Lana that we never actually see in game, I want to push some of these key aspects of her in game identity into her, so I interpret that "gentleness" as a slight nervousness, and that "always smiling" as something mostly for Ema's sake, so she doesn't have to see her rock crumble, so to speak. Anyway, that's enough on her...

I don't know if you really wanted my dialogue writing tips, but anyway. There they are. I wrote way more than I meant to, so sorry about that, haha! Hope some of this could be useful.

I don't know that I know the characters better than their creators... I only hope I'm doing them and the stories I think they could have lived in justice. Thank you very much for the ask, haha!

Onyx Storm sucked ass. I'm not going to write a full website review as this book does not deserve it. It wasn't even fun bad like Iron Flame. It was just boring! To write reviews, I have to read the whole book and I refuse to do that so here's my general thoughts.

This is one of the most half-assed “fantasy” I’ve ever read. It is blatantly obvious that this series was created for money and nothing more. Each book is steadily getting worse and I have no idea how Yarros is going to squeeze two more tomes out of this barebones concept. It's very obvious she has no idea where the story is going to go. Even fans hate this book and I feel bad for them. They deserve better than this.

I don't know what's going on. The beginning of this book is insane in the worst way possible. The politics of the world make NO SENSE at all. The evil government, for no good reason, refuses to ally with the gryphon people even though they're fighting the same enemies. It doesn't make sense to not form an alliance after everything that happened in the last book. Violet and her gang do something to the magical wards that allow the gryphon people to use their powers and this action convinces the government to form the alliance even though the gryphon people's inaccessibility to their powers was irrelevant to the alliance! I was so confused. I don't understand how the politics of this world is supposed to work. Yarros doesn't know either (clearly) so she is just making shit up as she writes, disregarding any semblance of sense because who cares, right? Fuck the reader, I guess.

It feels like she took the "zero worldbuilding" critique to heart because there's a lot more of it here and it's all terrible, contradictory and deeply confusing. The dragons, yet again, make no sense. I’ll never understand why the dragons just do whatever the humans do despite them always saying they do not adhere to human demands. Why even make the dragons sentient if you’re not going to do anything with their characters or society? I fucking hate how it is said that the dragons the rebel kids got specifically chose them, picking them out via their radical tattoos, because they wanted to create a strong opposing force. Like… you’re fucking dragons! If you don’t like what humans are doing, just eat them and burn down their castles! I’ll never understand why the dragons subjugate themselves to the humans. The dragons and their motivations just do not make sense! Speaking of the dragons, they’re at their worst here. Tarin has been reduced down to grumpy old man and Andarna… oh my god 😒. She’s so annoying! I get that she’s a teenager but holy shit you didn’t have to make her accurate to teens. How the fuck do you make dragons boring and annoying?! That’s a talent.

Violet and a lot of her buddies get second signets because of course they do. It doesn’t matter if it goes against what was set up in previous books. Fuck you for paying attention and caring about that. We finally get the fuck out of dragon murder school and explore the rest of the world, but once again, the politics of the world make no fucking sense and people do not behave like people. There’s a scene where an old woman is giving Violet trivia questions to answer and then at the end of it she’s like “Do you love Xander?” Or something like that. All the character exist to make Violet and Xanana look good. They have no lives outside of them.

There's a scene were Lover Boy is training the other people how to fight using their powers and it infuriated me to no end. The signets are so unbalanced. Xanny Boy is basically a god. His shadows can do what the fuck he wants them to do. He just beats up everyone else who has a basic bitch signet (like fire bending and enhanced speed) with a flick of his wrist. He's too powerful and thus all actions scenes with him in it are extremely boring. He's One Punch Man but without the wit and self-awareness. I don't understand how people like Imogen is supposed to train her signet when her power is erasing memories. Not everyone has a combat power, but Yarros just ignores that and has scenes where Xandra beats everyone up because that sexy I guess.

The writing is just bad as the other books. Weird descriptors, way too many named characters who do not matter, excessive juvenile swearing, outright confusing scenes that do not make sense, repetitive scenes of characters doing the same shit over and over and poorly written and confusing action scenes. Yarros is just not a good writer.

Violet is still insufferable. I'm sick of being inside of her head. Once again we are told that she is smart but she is incredibly dumb. She's only smart because everyone else around her is an idiot. I fucking hate Violet so much. Xander is just as bad. He's still extremely boring and devoid of all personality except broody. Him being a Venin is such a non-issue in this book. It hardly matters. Yarros blatantly recycles the jealousy arc Violet went through with Cat in the last book by having Xanax be weirdly jealous of Dain and some new guy named Halden. Because we gotta have some angst I guess, I don't know...

This book sucked! I hated it. I bailed half-way through and I have zero interest in finishing it. I didn't even get a bingo!

Don’t read this schlock. You’re better off reading Sarah J Maas’ crap. Fourth Wing and its sequels are not art, they’re cash-grabs. Don’t read shit that looks down upon you.

Oh and another thing: I'm done with this series. I'm not reading the rest of this nor am I reading anymore "romantasy" books as I fucking hate the genre now. They're all bad in the same ways. It makes people forget what the story is even about like that one fuck who thinks Sakura is an example of hardwork when it's Fucking talent. Naruto is hardwork and even then the show is about friendship not that, the plot of H vs T is only with Lee not everyone anyways and that people don't understand how Underdogs fucking work. A good example is Goku vs Frieza because at first Goku was being beaten the shit out of him making him an underdog. Underdog is the character who's at an disadvantage which Naruto is always him being jinnchuriki and Minato's son didn't make anything better it just made it worse for him socially and mentally because he couldn't know who his parents fucking are.

Heck actually thanks to fucking Hinata did his social position even change. I know crack shipping is the worse like ships that are some what reasonable is one thing, but when people ship somthing the clearly isn't going to work and try force feeding it to others is the worse. I really hate it when people act as if sns has any chance of happening cause it wasn't since neither Naruto or Sasuke are gay like you said.

Normal shipping is fine though as some pairings are quite reasonable or could happen if the author wanted it. Its just that some fans get out of hand especially when it was clear what the end game was going to be like with Naruto, Hinata was set up as the only possible love interest with her having a crush on him since her introduction.

Sakura is as far as possible from an example of hard work she has the talent, but wasted it by refusing to work hard unless someone was holding her hand. The show is about a lot of things hardwork, friendship, loneliness. There are a lot of messages in series as long as this.

Yeah no one other then Hinata could have picked up Naruto before the Neji fight for the simple reason no one else would be able to get him to let his guard down and drop his mask like he did for Hinata. Hinata has always been gentle and soft even during the exam showed kindness to Naruto wanting to help him in the written exam despite how it could get her in trouble. None of the characters could make him able to show his weak side and drop his fake confidence as none of them are the kind of characters who wouldn't make Naruto worse if he dropped his guard. Most would make fun of him or wouldn't have an idea what to say even Jiraiya at that point isn't close enough to Naruto to give him the support he needed.

NaruHina has always made sense it was clear they were going to be together and it only became certain as the series went on as every interaction ends up happening during big plot points.

Totally know what you mean about people acting as if Naruto and Hinata are trans is canon. Like seriously its not even headcanon its just forcing the idea due to their own insecurities and then trying to force feed to everyone in the Naruto fandom. If you point out the truth and facts they cry transphobic just cause you disagree with what they are so desperate to have as canon.

Sakura fans acting like SPR was a kiss in annoying the mood and setting did not have that kind of atmosphere at all it was medical treatment nothing more. In other manga yeah if the author intentionally plays up SPR and really sets the atmosphere then it can count as a kiss, but in Sakura's it was only medical treatment and even then it means little when Sakura pulls out the seal not long after when previously she complained about running out of chakra when Naruto was dying.

Hinata isn't even a stalker she only admired Naruto when he was in public places and as you pointed out did not harm him in anyway. Heck her attention would be far from unwanted if Naruto knew she was there he would have invited and befriended her and let Hinata watch and train with him in the open.

Temari isn't that bad she does have influence on both Shikamaru and Gaara who go on to influence Naruto. She is a side character though so she doesn't get shown that much nor her own character arc. I found her character interesting though as it becomes clear that she has always cared for Gaara even when he was his worse like a sister should. Plus her relationship with Shikamaru is a good overall.

Tenten could have been shown more out of the side characters she really didn't get a decent showing. I like NejiTen to me its the only Neji ship that makes any sense and a Hyuga weapon master sounds bad ass. Overall though she really did end up being forgotten about in the story and the only way she could influence Naruto is through her interactions with Neji, Hinata or Lee.

ok so like. ignore the time it took me to get to these. i was in fact thinking of them constantly but the act of actually typing?? horrendous. // oc asks: roots edition

1. How many living parents does your OC have? If they're alive, where are they now and what's your OC's relationship with them? If they're dead, how did they die?

RIYA — two! both of Riya's parents are still living in the ancestral Clairmont estate back in Cumberland, thank goodness. Riya is the biggest daddy's girl known to Thedas, they've been nearly attached at the hip since she was born as she's Loren’s only daughter and youngest child. they had matching outfits, practically a language of their own with all of the in-jokes and references, and she felt safe talking to him about anything and everything. she's not nearly as close with her mother, but their relationship is still good. i think Riya sometimes perceives it as being a little worse than it is, but that's just because she's somebody who craves frequent displays that show how somebody feels about her. Priscilla sacrificed a whole new palatial estate to the Circle of Magi just so Riya could grow up in the comfort she was used to, never truly punished her for shunning her studies and responsibilities, and started pulling on every resource to protect her after the frame job. there's no doubt they love each other with all of their hearts, but Priscilla has trouble with vulnerability and emotional expression, and Riya struggles with the high standards/expectations from her. 

MEREDITH — first of all: you're sick and twisted for this. second: zero 💚 they were both casualties of Rendon Howe’s coup. i personally, me myself and i, believe Rendon would have been too much of a cowardly, slimy fuck to be face-to-face with any Cousland when it all kicked off, so i believe that Bryce suffered a fatal stab wound from one of Howe's stealthier soldiers and subsequently bled out in the larder before being found. as for Eleanor?? i'm having a tough time with this one and have been for the whole week it took me to finally get back here. as of right now, i'm fucking with the idea that Eleanor was able to wipe out a small group of the attackers before Rendon finally showed up with his own squad of goons, and she died from one of them stabbing her in the back after she'd gotten far too close to taking Rendon down in a rush attack. i simply find it hard to believe the woman who took down a warship at the age of fifteen would've laid down and died, or been unable to get at least one good strike at the man who filled her with such a powerful vengeance. clearly the fuck didn't die there, but i like to think he spent a good few months recovering from the wound Eleanor left him on her way out.

ELLANA — you'd think after all these years i would have her clan figured out but i kinda forgor 💀 i think her parents would be alive! given who Ellana is, i imagine her family (and clan overall) would hold similar values and they'd lead kinder lives that allow them more peace from outside dangers. i know she'd be a family focused woman so she would have a good relationship with both parents, perhaps closer with her mother just cuz. if i end up making a post in the next few days with a bunch of brand new dalish elves hot off the presses this is your fault (affectionate)

3. How did your OC feel the first time they left home? Why did they leave?

RIYA — answered here!

MEREDITH — first time she left home probably would've been joining her father on teyrn business to visit some bann or other, tagging along because of a young girl's curiosity. likely could have been the first trigger to her becoming interested in politics, bombarding Bryce with questions on the carriage ride to their destination and then somehow finding even more once they were there because she found the business so fascinating. it would have undoubtedly been exciting for her from the jump, and only gotten better the further along they went as she started to learn more and more about the people of the teyrnir and her father's responsibilities. 

ELLANA — her clan is one of the rare groups to engage in occasional trade with humans and i imagine this soft-hearted clown would've enjoyed taking part in those ventures, i'll count that as technically leaving home because i'm sure it was at least a week’s worth of time spent traveling out and engaging. she was eager to go! it would have meant a great deal to her that she was being entrusted to join the journey as a protector for those who were going along, and she wouldn't deny feeling a bit of a thrill at the idea of interacting with non-dalish for the first time. 

11. What was your OC scared of as a child? Are they still scared of that?

RIYA — answered here!

MEREDITH — Aldous doesn't strike me as the type of teacher to censor or lighten history for the sake of a young mind, which i'm sure Meredith would've been grateful for in her young adult years and onward, but as a child she was often worrying herself to sleeplessness over the dreadful—and sometimes downright evil—acts of humankind. the Orlesian occupation and subsequent war to regain Ferelden’s independence was filled with enough horror stories on its own to fuel her nightmares for years on end. this all probably contributes to her later development of paranoia tbh, but let's not examine that rn. i’d say around her origins era that she’s still holding onto those fears, but she has the added fun and lucky experience of getting to learn that her own countrymen are just as capable of their atrocities.

ELLANA — i think she would have been fortunate enough to avoid any serious fears as a child, in part due to her innate bravery and another to her clan having a more gentle history compared to many others. perhaps a fear of heights, which she'd definitely gotten over by the time the inquisition came around (hi mage barrier + flinging self off a cliff to avoid finding a path combo <3) ((she wouldn't like. Literally do that but it's funny)). something super specific but i feel suits her as she's spent so long in the woods: a forest going silent. not something i think she'd have gotten over, and just the idea of it makes her feel on edge. like what the fuck do you mean all of the wildlife and even the wind has gone quiet because Something Is Coming, that’s always scary. 

14. Who was your OC's first love? How do they remember that person now?

RIYA — a noble boy that started training under her brother, Regulus, when she was in her teens. he was a young warrior-in-training with lofty aspirations of gaining glory through acts of altruism and heroics—basically he was a startup version of the heroes she'd grown up hearing stories of from her own family history and other various tales of daring, so naturally she had to pounce on that with all the finesse a 15-year old Riya possessed. it worked because she was pretty and heaped on all of the praises a young fighter would love to hear from a girl (not to mention there's a high chance they already knew each other from running in the same social circles), but it wouldn't have lasted very long. they had a good month or two of a fun and frivolous relationship, but Riya had gotten her first hook-up and that sparked her long-lasting habit of fooling around with a partner until she was abruptly ready to drop them and move on in search of another. she would have been adamant then and would still be now that just because their connection was brief, it doesn't mean her love for him wasn't real (it was a shallow thing entirely based off of her [unsurprisingly] getting horny about a young hero in the making but hey! still counts). i'd say she remembers him fondly because i don't imagine it ended in a Disastrous way. all she's got of him are good memories of early practices for her flirting skills, eagerly observing warrior training, and a judgment-free first sexual experience that probably gave them both a good confidence/happiness boost.

MEREDITH — if there's one thing about me it's that i'm gonna push my “Meredith and Gilmore were childhood sweethearts” agenda whenever i'm handed the opportunity, because i can't be convinced that it's not adorable as hell. a little lady and a young squire?? cuties. babies. must be protected. nothing too serious really but they were in their early teens and had grown up together, having that close bond made it easy to slip into crushes once they hit puberty. he fancied himself her protector and she found it incredibly romantic, as a young noble girly is wont to do. he also knew how to make her laugh, could tell when she was hiding irritation from others to be polite, and took her seriously (which we all know is monumental to a teen girl who has Ideas and Opinions). unfortunately, most of the time when Meredith allows herself the space to remember him, she thinks back to his promise that he would be at her side until she had all of Ferelden wrapped around her finger. makes it harder to face the fact that she’s taking those steps without him, even if she’s managed to find support in others. she’s fond of the times when she can think of him and focus only on his loyalty and courage, rather than the other Horrors which plague her even a decade on. we don’t talk about Fort Drakon <3

ELLANA — the Second of her clan, a girl named Mirisa. a severe case of puppy love that lasted quite a while on both sides. Ellana was practically born with a deep respect and awe for mages, so i imagine that contributed to her developing a crush and subsequently taking any excuse under the sun to be present for Mirisa’s practicing or training so that she could observe the magic. their favored way of wasting the time away and being together was going off to relax under the shade of some tree or other, Ellana with her head in Mirisa’s lap, content listening to the Second ramble on about all she was learning from the Keeper that week. most of the arcane talk went over her head (though she engaged with it as best she could), but her favorite topics were the various tidbits of history that she wasn't learning about in her own teachings. they're probably still friends by the time Ellana is sent to the Conclave tbh and she looks back at their little love affair as an adorable example of harmless, innocent romance. it brings a smile to her face recalling the little moments of sneaking chaste kisses when nobody was looking, or them giggling at nothing simply because they were giddy being near one another.

MEREDITH — i’m sitting here trying to come up with a condensed list or something but it’s like. take one look at this woman and you know she’s carried and cataloged literally everything she’s ever been told or learned herself through her entire life. she has names of nobility and military figures memorized from wars and conflicts that haven’t mattered in who knows how long. she’s hoarded knowledge on ancient and abandoned Fereldan traditions just for fun. she can recite the entire timeline of the Cousland family back to its origin and give you cute little blurbs on most, if not all, of the family members. she’s a fucking nerd with an obsession to Know Things due to the assumption that knowledge is power enough to keep her safe and in control, she’s not letting anything slip the mind palace.

ELLANA — naturally she carries and maintains the vir tanadhal as both a dalish and a hunter, feeling more attuned to the vir bor'assan (bend but never break. "as the sapling bends, so must you. in yielding, find resilience; in pliancy, find strength.") out of the three. the vir banal'ras (aka dalish calling for a blood debt to be paid) wasn’t something she clung to very much as a kid but the memory of it came rushing back and became very important to her on a handful of occasions during her time as agent/inquisitor. she wasn’t as religious or spiritual as some of the others from her clan, but she still carried out the traditional ways of worship for the evanuris as any good dalish would.

Conquering the Inner Ghost

Everything is supposed to be back to normal.

Molly and Ollie are back on great terms again, and Scratch no longer has to worry about being hunted down by ghost-hunting traps everywhere he goes.

Everything should be normal, anyway.

Ollie still flinches every time Scratch moves towards him. Scratch notices that he's still flinching every time he moves towards him.

Notes:

This is supposed to take place sometime relatively soon after Ollie's breakdown at the end of Unhaunting, but it could honestly fit in anywhere in season two after Frightmares. It could even fit in post-Carbon Zero Heroes! It could even fit in five or six years down the line! Intrusive thoughts don't wait for when they're convenient, they just show up whenever they feel like it. But for the sake of the story this comes before Carbon Zero Heroes, and before All in the Mind where Molly has more time to bond with them.

Everything was supposed to go back to normal.

Well, Molly’s version of normal, anyway.

Now that Ollie’s sworn off of ghost hunting forever and started dedicating his time to “engoodifying” the world in other ways, he and Molly have been spending significantly more and more time together. It seems like anytime Molly’s not out with Libby or Andrea, she’s cozying up in her room with Ollie, doing a terrible job at hiding the fact that she clearly still has feelings for the kid. Even worse, Ollie seems to be none the wiser, but Scratch just chalks that up to the fact that he’s also doing a horrible job hiding his own feelings for her. 

It’s gross. If not for being too lazy, Scratch would pack up his dollhouse and move it into Darryl’s room so he doesn’t ever have to see them being all mushy like that ever again. But…as much as he hates to admit it, he almost prefers things this way, because Scratch has never seen Molly happier than when she’s with Ollie. He’ll take those googly eyes over Molly lamenting over him by laying face-down on her bed and groaning loudly into her pillow any day.

Not to mention that Ollie’s been making large, active strides to being nice to him, too. The louder, more selfish part of Scratch is happy to admit that part’s over with, because that means he can actually start going places with Molly again without having to worry about being caught in another Spectral Snare or having a gun pointed at his head. Ever since the encounter with Blair at the video store, it’s been all smooth sailing from there.

Well, mostly.

Except for one glaring problem.

Which is why everything is not back to normal, despite Molly’s claims that they are.

Despite Ollie’s claims that he’s done hunting ghosts, and despite his claim that he’s gonna work his hardest to become a friend of all ghosts, just like Molly, the kid’s doing an awful job at hiding the fact that he’s still afraid of him, despite time and time again claiming that he isn’t. And okay, sure, maybe it was pretty hilarious at first, watching him jump and flinch every time Ollie noticed Scratch floating over his shoulder, and a petty little part of him thought it was deserved, but come on! Now he’s not even trying to scare the kid, and it still seems like he’s afraid for his life every time Molly leaves them in a room alone for more than two minutes. 

What’s the deal with that? Scratch thought they were over walking on eggshells around him after Ollie practically used him as a snot rag when he was crying over how guilty he felt for how he treated ghosts. That wasn’t all an act, was it? Because if it was, and he’s still conspiring with his family, he’ll-!

“Whoops!” Molly’s exclamation spooks Scratch out of his thoughts, and he shakes his head to clear his mind.

Oh yeah.

He’d almost forgotten.

Ollie’s here right now. 

He and Molly are squished up next to each other under a hastily-made blanket fort on her bedroom floor, watching a B-grade horror movie the two of them had discovered had a cult-following online. Scratch had gotten so caught up in his head that he’d also somehow forgotten that he agreed to watch the movie with them, seeing as he was sitting on Molly’s other side. 

“What’s wrong?” Ollie frowns, sitting up to meet Molly’s gaze. She meets his worried look with a playful snort, and taps at the empty bowl in front of her. 

“All out of kettle corn! I’ll go see if I can get us some more” She smiles, and stands to stretch before she turns to face the two of them. “You two behave yourselves,” she squints teasingly, and points to the laptop. “And I know how awful you both are with spoilers, so pause that for me until I get back”

“On it, McGee” Scratch salutes sarcastically, but Molly, ever used to his shenanigans, simply grins at him before disappearing down the attic steps with the empty bowl tucked under her arm. Scratch rolls his eyes at her, and moves to grab Molly’s laptop so he can pause the movie, but…

Ollie flinches at the gesture. 

As a matter of fact, not only does he flinch at the very simple gesture of Scratch moving slightly closer to him, but he also curls in on himself, bringing his knees to his chest and sighing loudly. 

Scratch groans.

Nothing’s gonna change unless he says something, is it? ‘Cause Ollie’s clearly hit a wall with Molly, and she’s not even the one he’s flinching at.

Curse Molly and her empathy for rubbing off on him.

Scratch sighs, rubbing at his temples. “Okay, kid, I have to ask. What could I possibly still be doing wrong?”

“Huh?” Ollie pulls his head from where he’d buried it into his knees. “What do you mean?”

Okay, no flinch at being directly addressed. That’s a good sign. 

“What do you mean, what do I mean?” Scratch crosses his arms, doing a terrible job at hiding all the frustration in his voice. “What’s with all the flinching? All the acting like I’m out to get you? Is there something I’m still not doing right? How else could I possibly prove to you that I’m not out to get you or Molly?” 

Ollie blinks at that, and adjusts his sitting position so he’s not completely curled in on himself anymore. He opens his mouth, closes it, visibly pauses to think, and just when Scratch thinks that Ollie’s about to drop his nice-boy facade and go on a vigilante ramble about protecting those he loves most, or whatever, he…droops.

“...Oh,” is all he says, which genuinely catches Scratch off-guard. “So you did notice,” he says, but then he scrunches his face in like he feels like an idiot for saying that out loud, like he’s aware how obvious he’s being about it. He finally seems to find the courage to look Scratch in the eyes, and as awful as Scratch is at reading people just from their expressions, even he can see that the kid just looks…tired. Truly, genuinely tired, not in any way that could be fixed by a good night’s rest.

And, well….Scratch knows that feeling all too well. 

“Can I…tell you a secret?” Ollie mumbles, which catches Scratch even more off-guard. If not for being the only other person in the room, Scratch would be sure Ollie was talking to someone else. “And…” he starts to curl in on himself. “...Can you promise not to tell Molly?”

Scratch raises an eyebrow at that, but before he has any time to question why Molly isn’t allowed to know such crucial information, Ollie quickly waves his hands around to defend himself. 

“N-not because it has anything to do with her, promise!” He squeaks. “Or ghost hunting. Or any of that.” He pauses, and turns a little red in embarrassment. “O-okay, actually, it might have to do a little bit with ghost hunting, but I promise it’s not because I plan to start back up again”

Well, Scratch will give him that. If he really were trying to start up ghost hunting again, why would he go to a ghost about it? Especially one who could very easily go and tell Molly about it?

Scratch sighs, his form drooping and relaxing around him. “Alright, kid, I’ll bite. What’s on your mind?”

That must’ve been some incredibly poor choice of phrasing for whatever Ollie wants to talk about, because his face momentarily goes pale before he’s quick to recover himself. 

Ollie sighs heavily as he looks towards the ground, no longer able to look Scratch in the eyes despite having just asked to talk to him specifically. Scratch decides it’s best not to question it, because he has a feeling they’re going to be here all night if he does. 

“It’s just that…” Ollie mumbles, and tugs on the sleeve of his jacket. “I keep having all of these…thoughts. And daydreams. And nightmares. And I can’t make them go away no matter how much I try to get them to.” He looks at his shaking hands, but doesn’t let Scratch ask any questions before he can continue. “I keep having all of these awful thoughts about ghosts. Every time I’m in a room by myself, I keep thinking some ghost is gonna jump out and attack me. Every time I leave the house I feel like a group of those Frightmares are gonna come back and attack my family while they’re vulnerable. I locked all of my old ghost hunting weapons away in one of my old moving boxes in the closet, but I keep thinking that someone’s gonna come at me in my bed while I sleep. Even when I sleep, I have these nightmares about being stalked, about being kidnapped, about…so much worse” 

He starts curling in on himself.

“Worst of all? I still find myself having those thoughts about you. I shouldn’t, and I don’t want to, but every once in a while I have these thoughts that you’re gonna do something to me the moment Molly leaves the room. I know you’re not, but it’s like the muscle memory part of my brain won’t buy it.” He raises his hands in defense again. “I’ve never had any thoughts about hurting or doing anything to you, so you don’t need to worry about any of that, but…” He sighs. “If you’re starting to notice when I get all jittery and nervous, it’s only a matter of time before she starts noticing, too” 

He meets Scratch’s gaze again, like despite all of this venting he’s the one who needs to make a promise to make it all better. “I don’t want to act on these thoughts, I never want to hurt a ghost or any other supernatural creatures ever again, but they won’t stop”

Ollie brings his knees to his chest again and buries his face in them. Scratch can’t make out the look on his face anymore, but the sound of his broken, shuddering breathing is unmistakable.

Scratch is…baffled. He wasn’t sure what to expect when Oliver “comes to Molly for everything because she’s the most reliable person he knows” Chen came to him for a crisis, Scratch “will sell your soul for one spicy chip and spill any secret to everyone he knows if it’s funny enough” McGee, but it certainly wasn’t…that. 

He’s…speechless. Sure, he’s always been awful at providing comfort, but rendering him completely speechless is a feat that even Molly finds hard to achieve.

Scratch awkwardly pats Ollie on the shoulder. “I don’t understand…” he replies, much softer than he intended to. “If you’re having all these awful thoughts about me, why come to me? Why not go right to Molly?” 

Ollie whips his head up at that, his face going pale again. “Are you crazy? I can’t do that! Do you have any idea how she’d react if I told her all of that? She’d never trust me again! She’s gonna think I’m backsliding!” He starts tugging on his hair. “If she finds out I’m having all of these awful thoughts of ghosts being awful she’s gonna hate me! She’ll never speak to me again!” 

Scratch feels terrible for the kid. 

He really does! He feels awful. He knows better than anyone what it’s like to feel like you’re the worst person in the whole universe. He knows better than anyone what it’s like to feel like all the eyes in the world are turning towards you as daggers.

But…does he really think that’s all there is to it? Does this kid really think that one or two bad thoughts he doesn’t even plan to act on makes him the scum of the earth? Does Ollie really think that someone like Molly would stop talking to him when she talks to a ghost like him every day?

Scratch doesn’t even realize that he’d started laughing at the thought until Ollie reacts.

“Hey! I’m serious!” He squeaks. “She’d hate me! I’m a terrible person!”

“Take it easy, kid!” Scratch wipes a tear from his eyes. “I’m sorry. I’m not laughing at you for being upset”

Ollie blushes. “Then what’s so funny?” 

“I’m laughing ‘cause they’re called intrusive thoughts for a reason, kid.”

“I don’t…” Ollie starts, but pauses to tilt his head. “I don’t follow.”

“You think you’re a terrible person for having intrusive thoughts? Puh-lease. If having intrusive thoughts made you as terrible a criminal as you make it seem, then I should be jailed for the rest of my afterlife.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean…” Scratch sighs, scrubbing his hands down his face. “If you’re a bad person just for having bad thoughts, even those you don’t listen to, then what am I still doing here? I struggle with bad thoughts all the time and you don’t see me doing anything about them, do you?” 

Ollie blinks. “I hardly see you do anything at all.” 

Scratch squints. “Insult aside, my point is that they’re just thoughts, kid. If you’re having all these awful thoughts and you’re actively recognizing that you’re bad, how can that make you a bad person? A real bad person wouldn’t even blink an eye. A real bad person would act on those thoughts without a second thought.” Scratch grabs both of Ollie’s shoulders and shakes him gently. “I know you’ve got this whole savior complex thing going on, but I’ve said it to Molly and I’ll say it to you, too. You’re human. You can’t save everyone. And, well, you’re going to have awful thoughts for no reason sometimes. That’s just how people are.” 

“But…” Ollie frowns. “Mine aren’t for no reason. I did hurt all of those ghosts, and I did used to act on all of those awful thoughts.” 

Scratch raises an eyebrow. “But you stopped, didn’t you? And you’re not listening to those thoughts anymore. Trust me, I know a lot of ghosts who promise to do one thing but fall right back into their own habits the next day. Maybe you were that person then, but you’re not that person now.” Scratch taps at his head. “Your brain’s still fixating on ghost hunting? How’s about it starts going after the ones in your mind? ‘Cause those ghosts are gonna keep eating you alive if you never confront them.” He firmly shakes Ollie by the shoulders again. “Trust me. I know.”

For a few moments, Ollie doesn’t say a word. His eyes just dart nervously around Scratch’s form, but it’s not long before Ollie’s entire body relaxes and his shoulders droop in Scratch’s arms.

“You’re…” Ollie smiles shyly. “You’re right. Thank you”

Scratch smirks, releasing Ollie’s shoulder from his grip to cross his arms across his chest once more. “Don’t thank me too soon.”

Ollie tilts his head again. “How’s that?” 

“You have to talk to Molly about this. If you don’t tell her, I will” 

“What?!” Ollie squeaks. “I told you I can’t do that! Thoughts or no, she’s gonna think I’m backsliding!” 

Scratch only snorts in response. “Molly’s still friends with me, isn’t she? I’m the grouchiest, meanest person she knows and she’s still friends with me. She’s the most patient and understanding person you’re ever gonna meet. I’m sure she’d be happy to recount how long and hard she worked to get me to tolerate her hugs to the point of reciprocating them” Scratch rolls his eyes, but shakes his head when he realizes he’s starting to get off-topic. “Point is that she’s loving. She wants to help those she cares about and she’s not gonna turn away someone who’s struggling no matter the cause. You saw how hard she worked to chip away at you when you were still active in your family business, didn’t you? I’d be shocked if she weren't already ready to work twice as hard to help you figure things out now that you’re actively separated from it.” 

Scratch pauses, and mumbles his next thought, but not nearly quiet enough for Ollie not to hear. “...plus, you know, you make her really happy, and I like seeing her happy, so I’d get upset if you stopped talking to her because of some stupid thoughts. Hunt you down and haunt you for all eternity, and all that” 

He’s feeling too shy to put any real feelings into that threat, but Ollie seems to understand the general message of it all. His eyes turn to stars, and he squeals quietly as he grabs Scratch in a hug. If Scratch weren’t so used to the gesture already from Molly, it would’ve caught him off-guard for sure. 

“Awww, Molly’s right!! You really are a softie!!”

Scratch blushes at that, but before he can awkwardly reciprocate with a pat on the head, the sound of Molly starting her ascent back up the attic stairs startles Scratch out of his thoughts. He quickly (and gently) shoves Ollie out of the way, quick to put his grumpy facade right back on like a mask. 

“I thought I told you we weren’t there yet” He crosses his arms, squinting at the swoopy-haired boy in front of him.

Ollie only laughs in response. “Right, right, sorry” he grins teasingly, all the fear from earlier nowhere to be found.

I want to read a lcf fic where tboah cale from a shitty alt-universe gets thrown to lcf universe and now krs!Cale has to deal with an 18-20-year-old tboah!Cale with below zero self-esteem.

And it's permanent.

The universe-hop thing, not his low self-esteem (I hope).

Tboah!Cale doesn't mind staying there. Maybe he ended world-hopping on purpose, maybe he knew beforehand he was changing universes, maybe it was worth it, maybe he thought no one was going to miss him anyways. Maybe all of them.

And the Henituse family welcomes him. They're warm, they try to make him feel like one of them, they include him, talk with him, smile at him. They listen to him, actually listen, and try to get to know him—

—And that's more than anyone has done since his mom passed away.

They all have their ups and downs, of course. But they're slowly becoming a family and that means so much. And everyone is happy about it, too.

The most excited one out of them is Lily. She has four brothers now, even if she can't see one of them too often. Y'know, different worlds and everything. Besides, this new brother of hers practice martial arts like her—well, not exactly like her, but he fights— and joins at her training sometimes. He also fights as he walks, like an elegant cat. And she thinks that's cool and cute.

Deruth and Violan are going through an emotional roller coaster, just at different speeds. They both, although delighted to have another son, are experiencing a lot of feelings about the situation. Mostly worry about their new child who gets surprised every time someone is genuinely kind to him, but also shock because they have five children.

Still, Violan is overall content that all Cales are minimum willing to try, calmly bounding with each of them at their own rhythm each one. Tboah!Cale and her have styling afternoons once a week now. Deruth, on the other side, is silently having an existential crisis after another, overthinking about every reaction tboah!Cale has and wondering if og!Cale did or does the same, and feeling worse every time he can't remember. He already ordered Hans to punch him if he gets too trapped on it or does something stupid. He doesn't want to charge any of his children with that again.

Bassen accepted the whole world-hopping-alt!hyung really quick because he just got used to weird shit from krs!Cale and Cale!Roksoo's unique ways of thinking. Something like this was just bond to happen at some point.

He caught tboah!Cale's bad mental state on the first hours of meeting him and assumed it had to do something with their other selves. He just wants to know, why does his brother have to suffer in every life? At least he can do something about it now.

Bassen is very surprised when they announce that tboah!Cale is staying. He thought that was a given. Was it not?

Then they proceed to insist that the other should be the heir. Tboah!Cale wins but not for the reason he expected.

After some time living in this world with his new family, getting to know each other and healing, meeting Krs!Cale's friends, and just learning to be himself, Krs!Cale gets in his usual shit. Tboah!Cale is not amused. He goes after him, kick some people in the face, set fires a bad guy's pants, and comes back, wearing heels, with Krs!Cale over his shoulder.

That's how he and Alberu meet.

How did everyone get their names?

Asa/Asafoetida: a spice that's kind of stinky but tastes good, which is what the amorphous cloud of fairies that raised Asa thought of their new baby. Asa's last name is Lurk because they live in a swamp.

Aysel: means moon flood. Her parents thought it sounded pretty, and it reminded them of the full moon's light pouring over their rocky little island. Her second name (mostly another personal name than a surname) is Cemre, which refers to the warming of air/water/ground in spring - she was an only child born after her parents had been trying for a long time.

Hongyan Sinistile - the witch that cursed him is Fantasy Chinese and thought it would be funny to name a goose-turned-human a poetic name for wild geese. The Wizard he later met and imprinted upon gave him a surname, which he keeps as a great gift.

Linmir Celemariel: See here. Celemariel = a matronymic, and Linmir is, loosely, "jewel of the marsh," which her mother thought was poetic and was also kind of a dig at her human father: a beautiful gem of a child from a kind of boring man :)

Nee/Niosiki Ilfrith Lindwill Taithion Gnolmes Hirilorn Cranta: I used to have reasons for each of these names and I have forgotten all of them. I believe each grandparent donated one? Gnolmes is because I gave her high int/investigation, and my DM joked that she was "kind of a Sherlock Gnolmes." We started this game in 2017, man.

Rosenrot: her parents had a brick-red baby and went OH, ROSE-RED, LIKE THE FOLKTALE :) and devoted zero further thought to it. She does not have a last name because her parents did not have a recognizable trade and because generally if you say "Rosenrot, you know, the tiefling -- the red one, not the green one" people know who you mean

Silence/Mystra Keep Not Silence: Mystra-related names are traditional for planestouched kids in her family, which has a higher-than-usual rate of planestouched kids. [See here] for other Zarielin family names; they're usually Even Worse.

Sûl: that's a pseudonym babey! It just means wind, bc they're as free-spirited and graceful as the wind ;) It is their current name with friends but not with Friends™ (clients); they're supremely uninterested in telling anyone the name they use with their family.

I try to make names make sense with where a character is from, what kind of society they live in, and what their parents would have wanted to name them (or what name they would have picked for themselves, if applicable), but sometimes it's gonna be a little weak. Especially if I'm working with something other than Elvish. x)

Jersey Shore S1

Episode 1: "A New Family"

Characters introduced: Pauly D (29), Nicole "Snooki" (21), Mike "The Situation" (27), Sam "Sammi Sweetheart" (22), Vinny (21), Jenni "JWoww" (23), Ronnie (23) and Angelina (23).

The first time I watched this season, the original run had already ended but wow. Seeing everyone at the beginning is such a trip, especially knowing how it all plays out over the next like two decades!

They are unbelievably tanned omg.

I still want to spend a summer at a cool shore house tbh BUT with people I know and like. Although, I probably would've enjoyed this set up when I was in my early 20s.

When Danny is describing their duties he said "stocking" but I straight up heard "stalking" 😂 it felt right but kinda weird that he'd just say it out loud.

On first impression, Snooki was and still is the only one that I liked. I think I just felt bad for her and also everyone is just worse in comparison. The best in a bad bunch? Maybe.

So on the first night, everyone agrees Snooki is drama because she gets pretty smashed all on her own. Also because she jump into the hot tub with the guys in her underwear. Jenni is also in the hot tub but everyone is scandalised that Snooki is in there with the guys.

That said, my girl was definitely very sloppy for a first night with a new group. Really big mistake on her part but you live and you learn.

I can sympathise with drinking a lot cause you're anxious in a new situation with new people BUT I suspect this was about Snooki being the center of attention and just falling back on what works.

She does note a lot in the first few episodes that she's used to being the centre of attention and that she likes it that way.

The biggest thing that jumps out to me is how Snooki keeps repeating that she's not used to NOT being the centre of attention. I think that bothers her more than the feeling of being iced out.

The most surprising thing is not that Mike was into Sammie but that she was feeling him back. They even hold hands on the first night out.

Just very very weird.

Also Vinny commenting that she's not the hottest girl and he was expecting hotter - boy bye! He also immediately switched rooms rather than share with Jenni from first sight.

Vinny then says JWoww is a "shady bitch" for not mentioning that she has a boyfriend, which makes me think he was feeling her a little bit.

I absolutely agree with you, and I just wanna piggyback off of this to say that as a fat person, I definitely think that the way Ochre's written is fatphobic.

He plays into the trope of being the fat kid with zero personality and hardly having anything unique to his character besides being The Fat One, that looking back it's honestly pretty startling. That, plus having the lazy character coincidentally being the fat one who mostly only talks about food, isn't all that great. Y'know?

Adding this together with the fact that I can't remember any other prominent character that's described to be overweight in this whole series (the only other fat character I can remember off the top of my head is Dazzling, which I'd be surprised if you remember who she is), and it becomes abundantly clear that Ochre is a walking talking fatphobic stereotype.

Because like, the thing with him being the false dod member with the least to his name (besides the dead one), is that it's subconsciously telling us that fat people aren't and can't be interesting. They supposedly just eat, take up space, and offer up nothing.

Think about the fat characters you know. Are they anything outside of a joke side character, or someone we aren't supposed to seriously think about? Or do they maybe have a majority of negative traits? Possibly being lazy, gluttonous, and/or selfish? Are jokes made at their expense? Are they heavily associated with food? Ticking a good amount of any of these boxes means that there's a very strong chance of them being a fatphobic stereotype, and Ochre ticks all of them.

Most people don't realize just how bad it is because of how normalized this is in media. Heck, writing this all out is making me realize that how Ochre's written is even worse than I thought, and I look out for this stuff all the time.

I find it especially sad because I think Ochre has the potential to be just as interesting and thought out as the other false dod. I believe he's the only MudWing to have been introduced at that point that doesn't have any known siblings (besides Crocodile). What happened to them? Are they dead? Did they get separated? Did they ever even know each other? Is Ochre like Clay with how he didn't know MudWings value their siblings so heavily in their culture?

And this is just one hypothetical aspect of his character we could develop. How has being raised by the Talons as a backup affected him? Is this part of the reason he's so apathetic? What about giving him more nuanced relationships with the other false dragonets besides them just hating each other cause they're the mean kids?

Anyway, suffice this all to say that Ochre is actually my character now, and canon can't hurt him anymore. Look at how much happier he is already! ↓

She's had to get on Majima's case about it so they compromise by letting her have bodyguards but at least at an arm's length. Speaking of which, Majima and Kiryu definitely taught her some self defense and I can imagine her fighting style would be something like defensive counters and kicks

The main problem with IzuOcha

Firstly, let me start off by saying that I am in fact an IzuOcha shipper and yet I still feel like something is missing. Today I finally figured out what it is, so hear me out.

The problem here lies with the writing of the story itself. It is a shonen, so people like rivals, teachers, etc are given more importance. Consider the relation between Deku and All Might or even Deku and Bakugo, how important it is to the show.

But when we think about IzuOcha?

A cute girl that Izuku has a crush on.

Nothing more, nothing less. It is even highly unlikely that he suspects any girl like him let alone one of the prettiest girls in his class. Not to mention, most of his screentime is devoted to showing his sheer focus on his goal whereas Uraraka's screentime is shown to be fawning over Deku. It's not bad at all because she never goes out of her ways to get Deku to like her but it's also kind of unfair for most of her development to be wasted like that.

Another problem is that the story is written in such a way that she doesn't contribute to anything morally. In fact, her own morals were very messed up in the beginning. She only gave a new meaning to his name and that's that. Even Bakugo and Shouto have done more than that.

-Shouto told Izuku that words need to be backed up by actions during forest training camp.

-Deku feels blessed to just have a normal-ish conversation with Kachhan.

-It was Iida who supported him during Shie Hasaikai Operation.

What irks me is that because Deku has to become the No.1 hero, Ochako will never be his priority. Never was, never will be and even she is kinda aware of that which is why she decides to put her feelings away in the Provisional License exam but since then they have grown even stronger, which is quite apparent now.

- Despite the fact that they know each other very well, to the point where Deku was able to tell the difference between Toga and Ochako in the Pro Hero Exam but he has never been vulnerable to her and vice versa. Even during the sports festival, she decided to show Deku her mask, that she's okay and we later see her falling apart on a phone call with her dad.

Deku also shares his problems only with people like Bakugo and All Might etc. It's not like he makes her look special in any way.

So they're never vulnerable to each other and they don't connect on a deeper level like some of the other pairs in BnHA. Kirishima gets inspired by Mina in high school and decides to work hard to become a hero and later on, Mina takes the inspiration of her Acid Man from Kirishima's unbreakable. Shouto was the one to boost Momo's confidence during their Midterms test.

It goes both ways.

We see Ochako getting inspired by Deku as she attaches wires in her gauntlet/bracelets for better range and mobility. Heck, she even has a special pocket in her Hero Costume's belt where she keeps that Keyring Deku gave her as a Christmas present. It's cute like, really cute how she wants to cherish it and all but it's also very shallow at the same time. Do we see Deku getting ever inspired by Ochako in such a way?

The thing is, Ochako's shipping here comes between her character development. In season 3 the biggest development for Deku was him defeating Muscular, going to rescue Bakugo, learning Shoot style, and setting things with Bakugo and All Might for good. What was Ochako's character development?

Yes, this one and the only scene where she realizes that for Deku, his Hero work is his priority and that's why she decided that, that should be her priority as well. That's all.

So while Deku makes so much progress as a hero and as a person, Ochako is just stuck with "Oh what do I do with my crush?"

In season 4 there aren't any meaningful IzuOcha scenes. Even the scenes that could have been given to Ochako were given to Iida and Shouto.

They never have arguments!

I don't recall if they ever had even a single argument throughout the show.

Coincidentally, Ochako's crush is portrayed as a wrong thing by people like Toga.

And the cute All Might Netsuke later becomes a liability in the battle for her.

What's worse is that her quirk Zero Gravity is probably one of the most versatile quirks in the series that can be used for attacking, defense, rescue, chase, and whatnot but because of the lack of screentime, it is never explored in detail. While grappling hooks were a very nice addition to her costume, shouldn't she have come up with that idea way sooner so that it wouldn't look a rip off of Deku's Black whip?

There is just so much can do with her power and creating new moves would have been a no-brainer but NO! In fact, in anime and manga, this is taken as a very positive thing as we see them doing a fist bump probably in the next episode.

Ochako with her crush is like a lovestruck puppy in the limbo phase. She acknowledges her feelings but decides to push them down. The story also leaves no chance to remind the audience about her crush but we haven't even gotten a confirmation from Deku yet, so she's stuck. And even if consider the future Manga, it's all the same!

Tl;dr The ship is nice and all but Ochako's crush overshadows her Heroism and they both have other relations that are way more meaningful, interesting, and important to the series. This is why many people find this ship very bland or vanilla.

What I Thought About "Knock Knock Knockin' on Hooty's Door" from The Owl House

Wow. They are really pushing it for that secret message, huh?

Anywho--Salutations, random people on the internet who certainly won’t read this! I am an Ordinary Schmuck. I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons!

I think it goes without saying at this point that Season Two of The Owl House is setting itself up as a season without filler. Now, filler episodes aren't always bad. Yes, it hurts when a series turns away from the main plot for a week. But at best, they're utilized as a chance for the writers to play around with the characters and developing said characters without it relating to the overarching story. So, some people who see that consider it a bad thing that a series doesn't have that many filler episodes.

I like to call those people: F**king morons.

Don't get me wrong, I see where some of you are coming from. And I'd be willing to agree...if The Owl House was a plot-driven series. Which it's not. It is a character-driven series. Because for every plot thread and narrative that the show presents, they always relate to the characters and develop them further each time these threads get brought up. For example, look at "Knock Knock Knockin’ on Hooty's Door" (It pains me just to write that). Several narratives move forward, and it’s all done to make the characters grow. And to explain how requires going into spoilers. So keep that in mind as you continue reading.

Now, let's review, shall we?

WHAT I LIKED

Hooty: Might as well start with the character that this episode is about.

To tell you the truth, I wasn't a huge fan when I found out we're getting a Hooty-centered episode. I've grown to love him over time, but he is a comedic character that's best used in small doses. Primarily due to how his voice is grating to me (My ears are still bleeding...). With that said, I do really love his contributions in "Knock Knock Knockin' on Hooty's Door" (Seriously, there couldn't have been a less awkward title?). Hooty's antics when trying to help everyone are as hilarious as they are heartwarming. He deeply cares for his friends but just doesn't understand how his plans could do some unintended harm, which is pretty lovable if you ask me. We also get some surprisingly great insight into his character, as he feels insecure about basically being the comic relief who doesn't really do that much other than being funny. Rarely do you get that level of dimension from a comedic character, and it's even more uncommon for that to work out as well as it does here. It once again proves just how competent the writing is in this series to the point where we get an episode about Hooty, and it's funny and heartwarming instead of being annoying. And whoever is responsible for that, you're the best.

Lilith’s Letter to Hooty: I mean it when I say that I love how Lilith kept her word about her and Hooty becoming penpals. Their friendship was something I would have never expected to love, and I'm still shocked that it works so well, so seeing it continue like this just warms me to the bone. Plus, it is pretty sweet that Lilith's kind words are what inspired Hooty to do what he's done in this episode...meaning it's Lilith we should thank here--SON OF A WITCH! Even when she's gone, she's still working her way into my heart!

King going through Puberty: What?! KING IS EVOLVING!

(There, I made a Pokemon reference. Do I get my cookie now?)

Eda Keeping Herself Awake to Train Herself: I'm willing to bet a large sum of money that this has everything to with Raine getting captured last week. If Eda was still the most powerful witch in the Isles, she might have actually saved them. But she isn't, and now the love of her life is in the clutches of a tyrant planning something that could potentially be the end of everything. So I can understand Eda pushing herself to her limit to get back on top again, as I would probably do the same. It's not healthy in any way, and Eda would be doing more harm than good. But when it comes to the people you love, logic doesn't always win out in the end.

Luz Wanting to Make her Way into Amity’s Heart by Making the Echo Mouse Happy: ...That's it. I Just...I just love everything about it, ok?

This was also when I knew that I was wrong to doubt that there would be zero Lumity in this episode. I realize my follies now, and I humbly apologize.

Hooty Teaching King About Demons: This was so funny. So, so funny. Probably doesn't come as a surprise, especially since The Owl House proves itself as a comedy before, but the jokes have never hit as frequently and as hard as they did here. From Hooty getting offended by King's dance to him and Dana's insert wanting a "DNA sample," everything managed to successfully make me lose my s**t. It does come at the expense of King suffering, but I can stomach that much more than if it were Eda or Luz. And, as a bonus, we get lore about how demons work, added with another great joke of King getting in trouble with Hooty for saying he already knows this stuff. Humor isn't always the show's strong suit, but when it works, it f**king works.

King Wanting to Know What he Is: But despite how funny King's vignette was, we still get to see more of his character grow. We learn that he's frustrated now that there's this big question mark over his life now, feeling extra angry that his father "abandoned" him to leave such a present mystery. It shows the hidden resentment he has that Lilith inadvertently brought out, made even worse when King's father hasn't responded to the video yet. King hasn't really gotten that much development until "Echoes of the Past," so it's pretty cool that the writers haven't really slowed down on it. Especially when it leads to these great moments of King venting his frustrations.

King’s Shouting Powers: KING learned FUS RO DAH!

(And now that's a Pokemon reference AND a Skyrim reference. WHERE'S MY GOSH DANG COOKIE!?)

Eda’s Nightmare: If King's vignette hits you hard with the laughs, Eda's will absolutely hit you harder with the feels (never make me say "feels" unironically again). Knowing that Eda's life got thoroughly screwed over by the curse is something we could figure out on her own. But seeing just how much the curse ruined her life and tore apart relationships that mean the world to her really does a swell job at ripping apart the soul. What's even more tragic is, technically speaking, it's all sort of Eda's fault too. She kept hiding the curse, refusing to be a burden to others who would do all they could to help. If she had only been open and honest, things probably wouldn't have changed much, but they most likely would have been better than they are now.

Eda Attacked her Father as the Owl Beast: ...I don't know what I was expecting when "Keeping Up A-Fear-Ances" hinted that there was some possible tension between Eda and her father...but it definitely wasn't this.

The fact that we see blood where his eye used to be doesn't make things any happier, either.

Raine Broke Up with Eda: Before we get into anything else, let's celebrate the fact that it's now confirmed that Eda and Raine really did use to date in the past. Because this show is just f**king phenomenal with its LGBTQA+ representation!

But, seriously, this is a fantastic reveal that goes far beyond just shipping...well, sort of. It shines a new light on Eda and Raine's interactions from last week, revealing that while they're not a couple anymore, they still very much love each other. It helps make their last interaction especially tragic, as they were both on the same page now and could very well be together again. Only for them to be forced apart for the second time in a way that's much worse than the first. And I frickin' adore that this series changes the impact of one episode one week later. Again, it shows just how competent these writers are, and kudos to them for making something so...perfect.

The Moon Person: WHO THE FU--Nope. Nope! We have more than enough mystery bulls**t to deal with through CreepyLuz and Philip Wittebane, so I am PUTTING YOU ON THE BACKBURNER FOR NOW!

(They're probably nothing more than a one-off character, anyway)

The Owl Beast and Eda are Connected: Through visuals alone, we, the audience, can clue into what the curse really means. The Owl Beast doesn't want to be a part of Eda as much as she doesn't want it to be a part of her. Whether they like it or not, and they very much don't, they're stuck together. The thing is, and this is what I love the most, they still decide to make the best of their situation rather than let it ruin their lives even more. This might be the best possible turn Eda's curse could have made. It'll still affect her, and there are probably more negatives than positives, but at least now, it's not the worst thing in the world. And I feel like that's all anyone can ask when in a position like her own.

Eda's “Pretty Dream”: I don't know what emotions are toiling inside me more with this moment. Awe and wonder over how beautiful Eda's dream is, or heartbreak over the implication that she has only had nightmares since getting cursed...I'm gonna say both. Yeah, it's definitely both.

Eda’s Harpie Form: Well, fan artists are gonna have a field day with this...especially the freaks.

Luz Calling Amity a “Cotton-Candy Haired Goddess”: ...Have I ever mentioned how much I love this show?

Hooty Kidnapped Amity: ...Hooty, if your stupidity wasn't charming, I would be more than willing to call the authorities over how you kidnapped a girl in your version of a knapsack and locked her in the basement. For that is going to ring SO MANY alarm bells in people's heads.

Amity and Luz Stuck in a Tunnel of Love: *Smacks lips* Mmm. The adorable awkwardness of this moment is just *chef's kiss* magnifique!

Luz being afraid of getting made fun of:

Amity’s look of hope: I mean...just...f**king--LOOK AT HER:

That is the look of a girl who, while embarrassed as hell, still is ecstatic to learn for a brief moment, everything that she is hoping for has a high chance of being real. Who, in their right mind, wouldn't go "Aw!" at something so pure and innocent?!

Luz Destroying the Tunnel of Love: This is how to effectively utilize dramatic irony. The audience can understand why Luz is tearing the place apart because she explicitly states that she's afraid of Amity rejecting her in the end. They also know that's bogus, thus making it extra painful to watch Amity's heart break more and more with each second (which is perfectly represented through Amity's expressions). You feel bad for both of them, and even worse when you know that it can easily be prevented by the simple art of communication. That's what makes it great dramatic irony. Knowing the point of view of each character results in a scene that evokes emotions in two different ways.

Hooty’s Breakdown: This was...genuinely hard to watch. Not that it was badly written, far from it. It just...hurt seeing how destroyed Hooty was when he realized he failed the people he has such an admiration for. On the upside, a wholesome moment follows soon after as the Owl House gang tries to reassure Hooty that he's done a lot of good that night. It's a pure action that shows even though Hooty gets on their nerves all the time, they still care about him...damn it. I think I'm gonna cry.

Eda’s Advice for Luz: ...Eda...You're the best.

You found out that your surrogate daughter wants to ask a girl out, and not only were you quick to deliver the best possible advice ("Just go for it!"), but you also quickly reassure her that it doesn't need to be perfect.

And you know what? That's it. Eda is the best cartoon mom! She might not technically be Luz's mom, but I don't give a s**t because she is the best!

Luz and Amity Ask Each Other Out: Shh-sh-sh-sh...

Do you hear that?

...It's the sound of dozens of Lumity fans collectively losing their s**t...and I'm one of them.

AH-HAHAHAHAHA!

HOLY S**T! Holy s**t! Holy s**t...might just be the best way I could possibly describe this! Finally, after all the waiting, speculating, and praying, THESE TWO IDIOTS FINALLY GOT TOGETHER! AND IT WAS PERFECT! I mean, it was awkward as s**t, but that's what makes it perfect! You know why? You wanna--Hey! *snaps fingers*. You want to know why? It's because they're teenagers. Of f**king course, it's going to be awkward! This is their first relationship, so there will be a lot of missteps along the way. And that, in itself, brings me to the best (second best part?) thing about it happening in episode eight of the new seasons. Most endgame couples get together in the climax or even at the end of the series. But to have them get together this early on, means there will be quite a few episodes dedicated to showing them grow as a couple.

And better than that--EVEN F**KING BETTER THAN THAT--dozens of kids are going to see these two, a realistic depiction of young love that just so happens to involve two girls, and are going to learn once and for all that there is nothing wrong with being who they are. That fact alone is f**king incredible. Yes, it sucks that season three got cut short, and we'll have even less time with Luz and Amity, but knowing how many kids have felt seen today almost makes it worth it in the end.

And if I see one mother f**ker saying this was poorly paced, I might just hunt them down for SPORT...Sorry if that was an overreaction. I'M JUST SO HAPPY! Because they're happy! Look at them. Listen to them! It's so...GAH-HAHAHA!

“They’re adorable! And deserve all the happiness!”: You're darn right, Hooty! You're darn right.

King’s Father(?) Shows Up: What the--WHAT?! They're doing this now?! Here?! After everything else?

Oh, man. What could this mean? What dynamic changes will this cause in the main cast? How could the writers fit this in during the next two episodes? And what--

Hooty Eats the Letter: ...Pfffft--HAHAHAHA!

Oh, man...I should be mad, and I wouldn't blame others if they are...but that is too much of a brilliant f**k you that I can't help but appreciate it. Bravo writers. Bravo.

WHAT I DISLIKED

...Dislikes? Dislikes? You would honestly believe that after everything I witnessed in this episode, that I would have the gull to list anything wrong with it?!

HOW DARE YOU ASSUME THAT I WOULD BE SO CALLUS TO--Actually, I do kind of have an issue with the episode's title. It's just too much of an awkward mouthful for me to get behind. I understand that the writers wanted to sneak the K into the secret message, but were there really no other titles starting with K that they couldn't come up with?

But that's just a personal issue, and in no way do I think anybody else would feel the same way. Especially with how well-written everything else is anyway.

IN CONCLUSION

"Knock Knock Knockin' on Hooty's Door" (title aside) is another A+ episode. It was hilarious, heart-wrenching, and downright adorable while keeping me entertained with every minute. I'm sure there are some issues I was willing to ignore due to how expertly written everything else was, but why bother looking for the chinks in the armor when I could just enjoy a perfect episode for being so...perfect! Some of you might be willing to disagree with me, but to that, I say: Don't knock it till you've tried it.
