i have no idea what but something made me think about an essay i once wrote on the evolution of slurs targeted at lgbtqia+ folks. did you know "fruity" wasn't always a fun way to say queer?

a polite way of saying someone is batshit crazy is to say "he's a bit nutty." and y'know what else is nutty that nobody likes, according to everything everywhere? fruitcake. oh, and fruitcake - at least in the good ol' days - only came up during the holidays. much like your mom's cousin eliza, who was caught kissing a girl and is the shame of the whole family.

but now it's something funny. when i saw my now-girlfriend, the first thing i said was, "now that's a whole ass fruit salad." i didn't mean to say it out loud, but i did, and it's now a huge joke between us. and that joke between us - and every queer person who has ever had a joke with the word "fruity" - came from slurs.

queer used to be used as a slur. but actually, the word "queer" means strange or weird. it's weird that i think i look just as hot in a suit as i do in a dress, to some people. nowadays, though, people use the word queer as a label. it's a socially acceptable thing to say in most places, though it is still used in harmful ways in some areas.

then there's the f-slur. there are two variations: "fag" and "faggot". the first one is a word for a cigarette, and queer people used to be rolled up in carpets and burned on the streets. the second term means "bundle of sticks." if you beat me hard enough, i'm pretty sure my bones would break and i would just be a fleshy deformed thing with bones stabbing through me. kinda gruesome, right?

yeah, I mean, beating the shit out of me for thinking my girlfriend is hot would be kinda gruesome. thank god i am not in the eighties.

but here's the thing: my dad was alive for all that. when he figured out i was gay, he was more scared for my life than anything else. your grandparents were probably alive when they started calling us fruitcakes. do you know how fast the english language develops? i mean, it's not just the boomers being dumb about what "cap" means. our language is developing at an increasingly rapid rate.

les miserables is over 150 years old. numbers don't mean much in my head, so let me put it this way: that book was published the same year abe linclon was shot. and they still talk like that in france, by the way. whereas we take ages to read the gettysburg address. you read les mis in a beginner french class.

anyways, basically all of this is to say, slurs are dumb and there will always be new slurs in our language which is even dumber.

yknow, i think that q!maxo death has a very big potential for having one of the biggest lores in the server, because he is the only one that we have seen dying and not respawning. do you remember that theory that the feds were trying to discover how the islanders can respawn in the first place? they discovered how to make something that is indestructible as far as we know (cucurucho), sure, they kinda have discovered something with the eggs only having 2 lives, but they dont know how to kill something and keep it infinitely coming back. but now qmaxo is dead, and if the feds discover how to kill something that was infinitely reborn before, they might discover how to make something that keeps coming back no matter if theyre dead or not. something that death cant touch, cant hold. something perfect.
