Despite all this, I'd still say that, if there are no other options, it would be worth it to gain experience with political organising. Even if the only lessons you learn are what not to do, they can still be good lessons. This is, obviously, with the caveat that if you are transgender, indigenous, or otherwise have reason to doubt your safety in such an organisation, then you shouldn't risk it for such meagre returns - which also goes for any demands for monetary or time investment they might make.
So, be aware it's not a good organisation, and only join tactically if there are no other options around. I'm not very educated on the situation of the socialist movement in North America, as much as it can be said to exist, so I won't be able to give any recommendations as to alternatives, but I'd invite any Canadians to chime in.
