Every time someone says ā€œEdgar showed Vera a bloody painting to freak her out!ā€ An angel looses its wings
Because that is NOT how that went down (at least not exactly). The reason it freaked her out wasnā€™t specifically because of blood or something, it was because it reminded her of the past. Specifically, the aristocracy and how it sucks.
Tumblr media
This sets her off because Veraā€™s main goal is to forget her past and bury it. She doesnā€™t want to confront it at all, and Edgarā€™s painting makes her do that. Thatā€™s why she says heā€™s as dangerous as Patricia. They both pose a threat to her by making her confront her past (again, not exactly a physical threat, but a mental one)
Tumblr media
The reason sheā€™s so shocked and off put by Edgar isnā€™t because of anything inherently violent, she was mainly shocked that he was so aware of the way the aristocracy is
Tumblr media
She thought heā€™d be unaware of the way the aristocracy is greedy and full of awful people because she assumed heā€™d just be another coddled rich kid.
Tumblr media
I am BEGGING yā€™all to stop misquoting this letter, PLEASE
(Edit: and thatā€™s not even considering the parallels between the two of them both being gifted artists in the family, one being respected and praised for their craft while the other being ignored and unfavored. Edgar experienced the death of a sibling who died due to neglect and being forgotten, like how Vera [or better Chloe] was, and was deeply hurt by it. That being one of the formative moments that set up his resentment of the aristocracy. Contrastingly, Vera already resented the aristocracy for trying to leave her behind and was deeply hurt by losing the one person who did care about her. In a way, they almost fill the sister void for each other which could be why Vera feels a sense of familiarity with Edgar. Because for both of them, at its core, they wouldnā€™t have lost their sisters if the aristocracy actually cared about people)

Explaining IDV characters' lore bc I'm bored (Part 4)
Note: I researched upon different sources so let me know if I forgot something or wrote anything wrong <3 Also, I'm only covering backstories/pre manor lore and won't go fully explain like what exactly happened to them during the games.
š—©š—²š—暝—® š—”š—®š—¶š—æ (The Perfumer)
ā–ŖļøŽ "Vera Nair" wasn't exactly named Vera, which we know as of now. Her real identity is Chloe Nair and is the twin sister of THE Vera.
ā–ŖļøŽ The two twin sisters were born in the French commune of Grasse. Chloe was dismissed and looked down upon for her odd personality and exceptional talent in perfumery. While Vera, on the other hand, was well favored amongst the residents. Vera was also the golden child of their family.
ā–ŖļøŽ Despite how the two are often compared to one another and lived two different lifestyles, the sisters remained close and trusted one another.
ā–ŖļøŽ In Vera's diary, she talks about how Chloe acquired the talent that only people could only dream of and wishes for people to recognize her talent.
ā–ŖļøŽ After some time, Vera opened a shop where it sells Chloe's perfume bottles. With the quality of the perfumes and Vera's popularity, the shop was able to fetch far off.
ā–ŖļøŽ However, Chloe mistook this as her taking credits of her creation. Thus, she murdered her sister and stole her identity. She didn't think much of "Chloe" as she thought the people wouldn't mind her disappearance anyway.
ā–ŖļøŽ With her 'alias,' she gloats over the fame and recognition for a good period of time. Later on, she found Vera's diary and realized she misunderstood her sister's true intentions.
ā–ŖļøŽ Feelings of guilt and grief washed over her, and there came in the invention of "Euphoria," a perfume which scent makes the user forget everything but only for a short period of time.
ā–ŖļøŽ Chloe (or "Vera") thinks the perfume's formula is far yet to perfection and went to the Manor to search for the ingredients.

That's all, thank you !!

Gotta rant about Edgar Valden rq
Cause seriously, his character is so cool to me. Like, you have the basic rundown. Rich kid ran away from home because he was dissatisfied with his life there. But then, all of that ends up just being a red herring. The ā€œdissatisfactionā€ which always came off as him just being in his own head and looking down on others because he thinks heā€™s better than them gets flipped on its head with his 3rd letter. All of his trash talk makes so much more sense. He wasnā€™t just saying he didnā€™t care about other peopleā€™s opinions or money or fame because he was super self absorbed. He was saying that because he knew first hand the damage chasing money, fame, and power can cause. Really thinking about it, his father basically killed his entire family for status. And then, with the slight implication that Edgarā€™s dad knew what Sarai was doing to Edgar the whole time, he let his son get groomed by a man for over a decade and kept him on a payroll. Now, itā€™s vague about what Sarai did to Edgar, but it was obviously bad enough to deteriorate his mental health to the point of having hallucinations. All that, and his dad never got rid of Sarai. Never fired him. Nothing. Which makes sense, because having a super talented artist in the family looks good for their status. Probably covered up all the controversy their family had too. Why would his dad care? He couldnā€™t care enough to let his wife rest to get better from her illness, or to actually look for his youngest child when she went missing.
For the little we do know about Sarai, we know he taught Edgar that praise is the highest form of love. Again, playing into the idea that Edgar was brought up to try and appease others and try to get status and fame. This is even kinda hinted at in his very first letter when he tells Ella that heā€™s going to become a famous artist, a goal he ends up feeling disillusioned to. The fact he still kept painting even after no longer wanting fame and recognition shows his love for painting was rooted in something much deeper than that. Then, referencing back to his deductions where he says that life is beautiful and the brush can preserve that beauty, it shows exactly what it was that keeps him going with art. He thinks life is beautiful. A simple reason, but a lovely one nonetheless. He cherishes the beautiful moments like the time he had with his mother or Ella.
This also could change what he even meant by looking for inspiration when going to the manor. When he talks about how he finds no inspiration in his home, itā€™s not something as simple as everything is just boring. He talks about how the culture of the aristocracy is just straight up draining for him. The greed. The constant push for more money and status, even at the cost of loved ones. The shallowness. Thereā€™s no beauty in it, he canā€™t find inspiration in it. Even as he signs off his farewell letter, he implies he would never go back home. Heā€™s not just running off on some little trip to find inspiration and go home right after. He was straight up cutting off the life he once knew because it wasnā€™t really a life at all. As he puts it, he was just another decoration for his dad. For most of his life, he was kind of treated as less than human. More like a party trick for his dad to show off and gain their family more status.
And while we donā€™t know much about his role in game 5, the context of the game makes him stand out a lot. Outside of the fact that Edgar wasnā€™t in a faction at the start and the only character truly confirmed dead, his goals are also completely different from the rest of the group and he thematically differs from the others. Every other character is in some way trying to fix some ā€œissueā€ with themself to try to assimilate into a group they were ostracized from (I say issue in quotes because itā€™s usually something out of their control that they honestly shouldnā€™t have been blamed for). Chloe trying to become Vera to be accepted, Jose trying to get his first officer title back and rejoin the aristocracy (or his alcoholism in order to maintain his station as a first officer in the first place), Kevin trying to prove to himself that heā€™s reached a point where he couldā€™ve protected Angelina so he can face her tribe, and Patricia trying to rid herself of her curse in order to be accepted into her motherā€™s village. Meanwhile, thereā€™s Edgar who was wanted by his community, but not taken care of by them. All five of them have a similar goal, to get some form of community and support, but Edgar is in a much different position from the rest of his team since he is more confident in himself and who he is. Itā€™s never been called into question, and I donā€™t think thatā€™s a negative trait either since every time someone in game 5 tries to correct their ā€œflawā€ it causes more harm than good. From Chloe killing her sister who was innocent, to Jose accidentally poisoning Kevin who was innocent, Patricia killing Edgar even though he didnā€™t do anything to her, and even Kevin being self destructive in drinking the poison. Not to mention three out of four of them feel regret and unfulfilled after they do it (and the one Iā€™m not counting is Patricia because itā€™s not fully confirmed, but tbh there are things that foreshadow her not feeling fulfilled either so you could make it four out of four). Edgar, at least on the surface, didnā€™t internalize that there was something wrong with him that made the people around him treat him like trash, mainly because he was always desired by the people around him. These people still werenā€™t good for him though, leading to the lack of inspiration they give him. As he says, heā€™s looking for ā€œfresh colorsā€ and Edgar only refers to colors when heā€™s talking about someone he cared for (his mom = green, Ella = white, Sarai = red). Edgar looking for fresh colors could probably roughly translate to looking for new companionship with people that actually care about him.
If I really wanted to get into the internalizing thing tho, Iā€™d probably say his willingness to sacrifice himself probably comes fromā€¦
1. Being so used to getting treated like a tool his entire life he thinks itā€™s the standard to a degree (hence why heā€™ll complain about having to play hero roles but still gets them regularly anyway)
2. Being unable to truly repent to Patricia because he canā€™t bring himself to apologize for killing Sarai (and he shouldnā€™t tbh, especially considering that was like his first act of true autonomy)
3. And lastly, just not really having anywhere to go after the manor. His goalpost ended at the manor while the other four saw it more as a stepping stone to get to other places.
And thatā€™s not even getting into his overall lore relevance because letā€™s not act like he didnā€™t imply the Deross family are family friends of the Valden family in his 3rd letter. PLUS he has ties to Barriere.
Heā€™s always got this slightly hopeful air to him, like he still believes thereā€™s something out there that can bring him the happiness and love he once had. Itā€™s honestly just a really nice breather from the usual doom and gloom of idvā€™s storyline (granted his story is still depressing asf, but for idv standards itā€™s pretty happy. Like his 3rd letter where he just goes no contact with his dad is probably one of the healthiest things Iā€™ve ever seen an idv character do). Even in the end, he gets the ending he wanted. He finds the inspiration he was looking for, but tbh I donā€™t think it was death that he was trying to achieve. His deaths are always portrayed as sacrifices specifically. Itā€™s usually not something he really wants to do. Runaway didnā€™t want to risk his life and put himself in danger with mir, but he does it because he doesnā€™t want to abandon the followers to a cult. Censer didnā€™t want to die, he still really wanted to see his creatorā€™s wish come true, but he accepts death if it will bring it closer to coming true. Even in his experiment file, Orpheus says Edgar accepted it at the end, so he decides to accept it at the end of the game. Most likely for some greater goal that hasnā€™t been revealed yet since Orpheus was hella vague in his experiment file.
I could honestly go on and on about how well executed his whole character is too. With how well they played into double entendres with his words and used a lot of art metaphors to hide his actual character so on the surface you wouldnā€™t clock it immediately. Or the carefully picked art references they used in his trailer that all tie into his character really well (I still think he has one of the best trailers to date). To even the way his birthday letters are released. Keeping his perspective on game 5 hidden despite probably having the most reliable account, instead having other characters describe him to play into the misdirection.
I could literally talk for hours about Edgar Valden, he is the idv character of all time and I love him sm

Mini idv rant/yap session šŸ˜–šŸ˜–ā€¼ļø
no because I actually hate how THOSE identity v fans (specifically ones I see on tiktok) go like ā€œperfumer would definitely be homophobic and racistā€ like no can you read the idv lore?? Iā€™m not an expert on Veraā€™s lore, but multiple people have said throughout her lore she is very much wlw coded, one of her skin descriptions says sheā€™s in love with a woman and also has literally said she wouldnā€™t fall in love with a man in the idv novelsā€¦and head cannoning characters as racist is a whole other issue on its own like unless itā€™s heavily implied through actions or out right said can we just not call characters racist?? Like no just because Vera is rich and white doesnā€™t mean sheā€™s racistā€¦.šŸ˜šŸ˜
**(if anyone needs help finding the idv novels i will be more than happy to show u how to find them/pull up the quote that shows Vera saying she wouldnā€™t fall in love with a man also!! :3)**

Odors have a power of persuasion stronger than that of words, appearances, emotions, or will. The persuasive power of an odor cannot be fended off, it enters into us like breath into our lungs, it fills us up, imbues us totally. There is no remedy for it.
