SNOWFALL (2017–2023): Engrossing if often heavy-handed FX crime drama, co-created by John Singleton (with Eric Amadio and Dave Andron): a fictionalized account of how a CIA operation to fund anticommunist Contra death squads in Nicaragua in the 1980s sparked the crack cocaine trade in the U.S., focusing on a bright young Black man named Franklin Saint (Damson Idris), who becomes L.A.'s (fictional) first crack kingpin in increasingly uneasy partnership with twitchy, dweebish white CIA officer Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson), who will do almost anything to keep the money and guns flowing, with ultimately ruinous consequences for all concerned.
As with any serialized drama lasting six seasons, the pacing is uneven and some plot threads get dropped without resolution, and like Singleton's early films, it can't resist periodically veering into contrivance-laden melodrama (although it's at least less strident than BOYZ N THE HOOD or HIGHER LEARNING). However, it's consistently interesting, anchored by some very strong performances — particularly Idris and Angela Lewis, as Franklin's aunt Lou — and its '80s setting is more convincingly realized than many recent period pieces, with a few nods to the life of Singleton himself, who was a teenager in South L.A. at the time the story takes place. Probably its biggest flaw is that its Latinx characters, even the ongoing ones, are rarely allowed to rise above stereotype (and the most complex Latina character, played by Emily Rios, departs after Season 2), although nearly all the Black characters, who are centered throughout, are refreshingly three-dimensional.
CONTAINS LESBIANS? Franklin's Aunt Lou — one of the show's best characters — is bisexual, and in the early seasons has a difficult, on-again-off-again relationship with a ruthless lesbian club owner (Judith Scott). VERDICT: Doesn't quite live up to its more grandiose ambitions, and the unnecessarily protracted, relentlessly downbeat finale leaves a sour taste, but it's still among the best shows of its genre: BREAKING BAD without the blorbofication, THE WIRE without the paternalistic cop apologism. Note that the final season needs CWs for threats of sexual violence, which are pretty rough.

➻ introduction: Ramona Iris James Carter’s life was a game set before she even picked up a racket. Born into a familial legacy that painted the world in the hues of tennis, she was crafted to become the next muse that would sustain the legacy forever. But to Ramona herself, she was a blank canvas, reaching out for an unattainable path, one that seemed otherworldly for someone like her. That unattainable dream was the muse she was subconsciously bonded to—her collection of secret canvases, smeared and absorbed in all the colors she envied to embody, colors she longed to belong to without ever worrying about being a burden.
But she wasn’t the only burden in her family; burdens carried significant weight within the James-Carter lineage, with tennis being a central part of it. This burden led the passionate lovers from both sides of the highest courts to a rocky divorce and her father, tennis sensation Idris Carter, to resign from the tennis world. Their divorce sparked headline after headline, becoming a never-ending baseline rally, with Ramona’s heart caught in the midst of it all. To her, tennis became a poison—one her mother forcefully injected into her heart. Meanwhile, her father set it free, allowing her to find the color she had been missing for so long.
For Ramona, color became more fluid and present from the moment she first exchanged glances and smiles with the shy blond boy who lived across the street from her and her father, who she spent her early school days and nights with, whom her father also coached, and the brunette boy she met who nearly hit her with his bike, who lived across the street from her mother, with whom she spent her long summers.
At the age of twelve, due to rising tensions among her parents, their paths were all interwoven when her mother enrolled her in boarding school at the Mark Rebellato Academy. There, the three of them formed a bond they deemed unbreakable; and though tennis never remained in her favor, they truly helped heal a part of her through it . They were each other’s muses.
That was until Tashi Duncan.
The name she heard so frequently escape from her mother’s lips like a fresh breath of air. Almost so much, it seemed as though she loved her more than her own daughter.
Tashi and Ramona knew each other briefly. They met each other at the age of ten when her mother brought her to a tennis tournament in Washington. Ever since then, it became quite a tradition whenever Ramona had her school breaks. They tolerated each other and were also surprisingly quite fond of each other despite their evident differences on and off the court; in that case, their relationship with tennis. Tashi had mostly always won, and Ramona’s mother had always found a way to remind her of it.
So when Tashi’s presence spiraled into the center of their universe throughout the years, Ramona was given no choice but to spiral downwards along with it.
Color becoming lost once again.

Where to see Bridgerton cast in February
I am looking to expand on an idea I had prior to the New Year where I was posting only what Bridgerton leads were up to, I am going to try and make this a monthly post. Note that I may not cover all the new projects for all the cast, these are the ones I am aware of, I really don't have the time to do a lot of research, however, if you become aware of where the cast may be seen in either this month or next month feel free to send me a message/ask or comment below, and I can update/include it.
Phoebe Dynevor - Inheritance: Okay, this is technically a January release, but I am including it as I understand it is still playing in theatres in the US where it was released. I am not sure it has been released elsewhere as yet, but I am keeping a watch on release dates in other parts of the world.
Jonathan Bailey - Jurassic World Trailer (Rumoured): It is rumoured that the trailer for Jurassic World will be released during the Super Bowl on 9 February. The trailers will be available online shortly after they have been shown during the game.
Jonathan Bailey - Richard II: Jonathan Bailey takes the lead in this Shakespeare play from 10 February at the Bridge Theatre in London.
James Phoon - Much Ado About Nothing: James Phoon will be taking on the role of Claudio on stage at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London from 10 February.
Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha - Bridgerton Valentine's Day Fan Event: The Annual fan event online for Bridgerton S4 is again on 14 February. This is being hosted by Golda Rosheveul and could include other cast members.
Jonathan Bailey - Press Night for Richard II: The press night for Richard II is on 18 February, and in addition to Jonathan Bailey will we see other Bridgerton cast? It is possible that we may see Luke Thompson, and perhaps some of the other cast in attendance to support Jonathan Bailey.
James Phoon - Press Night for Much Ado about Nothing: Whilst we will see James for the Press Night, I am hoping that we will see some of his Bridgerton colleagues, maybe Bessie Carter, or Harriet Cains. We will have to wait and see if any of the Bridgerton cast turn up to the Press Night.
Simone Ashley - 10 Lives: The animated 10 Lives will be releasing in NZ on 20 February, having been pushed back from a release date of late January.
Claudia Jessie - Toxic Town: 27 February is the release date for Toxic Town which will be on Netflix. This is a limited series (four parts).
BAFTA Film Awards: On 16 February the BAFTA Film Awards will be held in London. I have no confirmed Bridgerton cast attendees, however, there is a chance we may see Jonathan Bailey in attendance to support his Wicked colleagues who are nominated for an award. I am also hoping that Jonathan Bailey may present an award again for the BAFTAs. Also, an outside chance for attendance (and perhaps presenting) is Simone Ashley, with 3 movies expected to be released this year, including F1 with Damson Idris, will we see them both present an award? Other potential attendees are Phoebe Dynevor and Rege Jean Page, though it is hard to know if either of them will also present an award.
London Fashion Week (Fall-Winter) 2025: London Fashion Week is February 20-23. Last year there were appearances by Simone Ashley, Nicola Coughlan and Hannah Dodd at LFW in February, so they are again expected to attend a show (or more) again this year, though it will depend on when Nicola travels to the US as to whether we will see her at any shows. Could we also see Florence Hunt, Emma Naomi or Jessica Madsen? Or some of the other cast maybe.
SAG Awards: The SAG Awards are going to be streamed on Netflix on 23 February. Nicola Coughlan has an individual nomination as well as the ensemble nomination, so will most likely be in attendance, but there is no indication who (if any) of the rest of the cast will be in attendance. I would hope for just about all of the main cast, Jonathan Bailey won't be able to attend, but I think that Luke Newton, Luke Thompson, Hannah Dodd, Claudia Jessie, Ruth Gemmell, Adjoa Andoh, Golda Rosheveul, Polly Walker, Simone Ashley, Victor Alli, Emma Naomi, Martins Imhangbe should be there. Wil Tilston and Florence Hunt's attendance will be dependent on their schooling commitments (I believe they are in their final year of school). I will be watching to see who we do see at the event.
Milan Fashion Week (Fall-Winter) 2025: Last year we saw Nicola Coughlan and Hannah Dodd at the Fall-Winter show so there is a possibility they may attend again. Could we see Simone Ashley at the Fall-Winter Milan Fashion Week this year? Last year Simone attended the Spring-Summer Fashion week, but not the Fall-Winter.
Possible press/promo beginning: This is pure speculation on my part, but the possible press/promo that may begin in February are Rege Jean Page for Black Bag if he is involved in the promotion, and Simone Ashley for Picture This (though with no definite release date this is a wild guess).
Wow! That is a long list, the cast will be busy in February, some more than others, I am looking forward to seeing them wherever they may be. Who are you looking forward to seeing next month?

Some recentish shows of note, or lack thereof:
COUNT ABDULLA: Charming comedy about a Pakistani doctor who gets turned into a vampire by a white vamp with a fetish for brown men, and the many complications that ensue. Not so much a horror story as a witty parable about the travails of being a person of color in Tory Britain today. (So, a horror story after all, then.) Jaime Winstone needs to dial it back, but the rest of the cast delights.
DEADLOCH: Snarky comedy-mystery by a well-known Australian comedy team, about mismatched cops investigating a gruesome murder in a small town. The mystery is clever; the payoff is blah; and despite the predominantly female, mostly LGBT cast, the humor is awfully reliant on misogynistic and homophobic cracks that frequently cross a line from "laughing with" to "laughing at."
HIJACK: Tense but very contrived seven-part thriller about the hijacking of a British airliner on a seven-hour-flight from Dubai to London, with passenger Idris Elba the wildcard. Gripping, but not terribly plausible, and the many false climaxes become exhausting, especially if you watch the episodes back to back.
THE LAZARUS PROJECT: Convoluted, intermittently fascinating, unpleasantly mean Sky sci-fi thriller about an app developer named George Addo (Paapa Essiedu), who's drawn into a secret organization that can undo world-ending disasters (natural or manmade) by resetting time to a predetermined save point, like a video game, although this has harrowing consequences for the handful of people capable of remembering the repeated resets. At first, this is basically just window dressing for grim espionage procedural nonsense, with some extremely questionable character motivations, but after a relentlessly bleak midsection, the first season finds its dramatic footing in the unexpectedly interesting final episodes, in which the premise is pushed to its breaking point and the grimness gives way to black comedy. This is the note on which the considerably more complicated second season begins, but it again grows uglier and bleaker as it goes on, and any sympathy for George, positioned at the start of the show as a relatable everyman, has long since evaporated. There are some provocative ideas and a number of surprisingly funny moments, but the whole story is predicated on pushing the characters into morally compromised positions (one assumes creator Joe Barton always has a browser tab open to the TV Tropes "Moral Event Horizon" page), and the fact that some of the (many) atrocities the characters perpetrate in hopes of fixing the existential catastrophes they've set in motion are subsequently undone doesn't make them any easier to stomach. Anjli Mohindra (who plays Archie, the veteran agent who initially recruits George into the project) remains frustratingly under-utilized in both seasons.
THE MORNING SHOW: Big-budget, all-star TV news drama is all dressed up with nothing to say, undone at every turn by truly spineless whataboutism and a centrist world view so gormless it makes Aaron Sorkin seem like Alexander Berkman. Reese Witherspoon is pretty good as closeted bisexual cohost Bradley Jackson, but costar Jennifer Anniston's limited range becomes a problem, particularly as the quality of the scripts declines noticeably in later seasons. You could always just watch BROADCAST NEWS.
THE OTHER BLACK GIRL: Disjointed adaptation of the 2021 Zakiya Dalila Harris novel scores when it focus on the workplace drama of a young Black woman in a painfully white publishing company, but trips over its own feet in its attempts to also be a paranoid thriller, with plenty of bad vibes that never add up to a coherent sense of threat and a conspiracy plot that doesn't really make any sense.
THE PERIPHERAL: Misfired adaptation of the 2014 William Gibson novel is executive-produced by the same people as the recent WESTWORLD series and has the same problems: big ideas that don't translate into action and an infuriating tendency to consign characters of color to marginal or villainous roles. Worse, it eventually becomes clear that several more compelling characters have been sidelined in favor of the poor white trash leads (Chloë Grace Moretz and Jack Reynor), who are neither very interesting nor especially sympathetic.
WHO IS ERIN CARTER?: Kinetic but preposterous seven-part action thriller with Evin Ahmad as a suburban mom in Barcelona who is secretly an incredible badass with a shady past. Basically a violent Walter Mitty fantasy for soccer moms who love the JOHN WICK movies, with a showy supporting role for Denise Gough from ANDOR.

c'est quoi survival end ? ca raconte quoi ?
Bonjour, bonjour p'tit·e anonyme,
░▒▓█▓▒░▒▓█▓▒░▒▓█▓▒░▒▓█▓
