Here is why i find it strange that there are some people who seem to think Minrathous specifically is too sanitized:

*a specific gripe that doesn’t have that much to do with the overall post but frustrated me all the same

To be so clear with anyone reading this, i am telling you why I personally do not take issue with there not being *sigh* more slavery in this game.

You don’t see more slaves (other than the ones you explicitly free) because you’re in the poorest part of Minrathous and the slaves, presumably owned by all the altus families, would be living in slave quarters with the altus families in the nicer parts. (Read up on the depiction of slavery debt vs. chattel HERE if you care)

Now that’s the easiest answer. But for anyone making this complaint, that isn’t good enough because we want to see the horror or it Doesn’t Exist. So allow me to continue.

What we learn form Dorian in DAI is that he doesn’t think slavery is wrong because his family ‘always treated their slaves well’. To treat slaves poorly in Minrathous is seen as Bad. It’s a moral responsibility to treat slaves well. Obviously, not everyone abides by this (I’m looking at you, corpses outside if Zara’s bloodbath chamber) but it’s the party line, if you will.

So, no. There aren’t slaves being whipped in the streets. Or…whatever else you might want to see. Because everything that happens in Tevinter, happens behind closed doors. Even blood magic is ‘officially’ frowned upon. Tevinter prides itself on a public stance that often isn’t reflected in actual moral practice. And I could tell you that it feels more indicative of politics as they are in real world now to have the outward stance be very different than the actual beliefs and values/morals held. But this post is about the apparent lack of slavery/racism in Veilguard, so I digress.

I have seen a lot of people bring up up alienages, or the lack-there-of in Minrathous. Which is, in the south, an area where the elves live similiar to ghettos/slums. Alienages were set up by Divine Renata I after the Exalted March against the Dales. They are a direct result of elves being forced into one walled-off part of town and creating a subculture based in-part on Dalish influence/heritage (the tree of the people being an example).

Stay with me.

Tevinter doesn’t have alienages. But Minrathous has Dock Town, which we are told explicitly is the poorest part of Minrathous. And we see that it is the poorest part because there are beggars everywhere and literally shanty towns along the streets where people are living. We are told explicitly by Neve that no one cares about Docktown except her (and the Shadow Dragons). There are demons running rampant, murders, thievery and no one cares because it’s Dock Town. Presumably because the Templars/any other sort of police they may have are a) corrupt and b) who cares about the poors??? They don’t contribute anything to society anyway and we don’t care about them.

In Dock Town most of what we’re seeing are not slaves, you’re right. They’re likely Liberati, freed slave class. Who are graciously allowed to begin a trade or join a Circle. They are not, however, allowed to serve in the military, the government, hold any rank in the imperial chantry. Also in Dock Town: the poorest of the Soperati, who can own property and serve in the military but otherwise have no representation in government or any real rank in the imperial chantry, or in general the ability do any social climbing. So they can never move up, they always stay stagnant, always poor and weak and never ever able to do anything about it.

This is your alienage equivalent, if it’s not clear. You’re in it. No, it isn’t walled off. But it doesn’t need to be walled off or called an alienage to be that part of town.

And before you ask about the tree of life, Tevinter slaves (and therefore the liberati class) are not just elves. They’re humans, dwarves and Qunari also (this is from World of Thedas Vol. I). All of which have different backgrounds, traditions and would not come together to form such a cohesive culture based on their Dalish heritage for reasons i’m sure i don’t have to spell out.

On a final and a bit of a personal note: i live in the southeast US. Bible belt. I grew up in a majority white suburb, and yes, I’m white. So as I said, if you have a different take, you’re entitled to it and maybe my opinion means nothing. But I grew up constantly hearing about the part of town that we don’t go to. Don’t go to that shopping center, its too close to [part of town where the minorities live]. And i tell you this to say that i never heard any of the adults in my life use a slur, but it doesn’t mean they weren’t being racist. And in fact, a lot of then pride themselves on not being racist and fail to see their implicit biases and the systemic racism.

So yeah, i guess to me, the minorities and the poor people being relegated to the part of town no one cares about, where crime and corruption are rampant is racism/classism as i have witnessed it most commonly in real life. It seems odd to me that people missed it or that it seems to not be ‘enough’ for people when it’s the kind of racism that is the most rampant in the present times (at least where i am) even if it’s not as explicit.

Again, i could get into the 40 acres and a mule, post-civil war reconstruction failures that kept black people down (share cropping) and is still keeping them down now and all the ways that minorities having the ‘same rights’ somehow tricks some people into thinking that racism and bigotry doesn’t exist anymore (just because Dock Town isn’t walled off doesn’t mean the people who live there are reasonably free to live elsewhere). But maybe that’s for another post where we talk about how freeing slaves is good, but not nearly enough to actually help marginalized people. (Government reform, which you know…you get to choose the new archon but that is irrelevant and doesn’t mean anything)

*I’d also like to say that i saw a post which referenced Chantry teachings that say kissing elves is like kissing a dog. I don’t know about this. What I do know is that in The Masked Empire There is a scholar out of the university in Orlais who comes out (on the authority and encouragement of Gaspard) and says that to lie with an elf is to lie with an animal because they’re more like rabbits and follow their baser instincts. I can only assume this is to what that post is referring. You may correct me if i am wrong.

So #1 it didn’t come from the chantry, as i remember. And #2 the schism between the Northern and Southern chantries is widely known, so what applies to one may not apply to the other. Very big rift. So it’s not surprising to me that this doesn’t come up, is all I’m saying.

paul learning he has a crush on darry and has since about freshman year. he kept it to himself but he would but darry stuff in hopes of getting him to stay (i think paul’s parents did similar stuff to what steve’s dad does-like they’d buy him nice and expensive things in hopes that he’d stay their precious baby boy and whatnot, they’re not good parents-) but that was why paul bought darry the madras shirt. he wanted him to stay. to think he had a chance. (more on that later)

come sophomore year and darry gets a girlfriend. i wanna say bev lowkey? but as we know bev is a bitchhhh and in another hc of mine, darry was out with some socs and was arrested because of petty crimes and stuff and had to be bailed out by his mom…this was in like…middle of junior year, so that was when he broke up with bev. he never felt anything for her anyway and just assumed she wasn’t the one. he felt like a real mess. but he never felt anything for anyone really (yes i’m pushing my somewhere on the aroace spectrum darry headcanons at you)

a month or so later and valentine’s day rolls around, paul ends up doing some cheesy “secret admirer” type thing where he bought dart all these expensive ass things and then darry later found paul in the locker room and paul confessed and darry just did not know what to do. he didn’t know paul swung for his team, he also didn’t know that he had a crush on him of all people, but all darry knew is that it was too much. so he just had to awkwardly tell him “i don’t feel the same way, i’m sorry, i love you too, but only as a friend” and that absolutely crushed paul.

OR ALTERNATIVELY

darry is like “okay, fine, i’ll give it a shot, i never felt anything for girls so maybe i’m gay” but whenever paul insinuates going…y’know. darry just feels…not right? he tries for paul. paul’s his best friend. he wants paul happy. but darry isn’t happy. and i don’t really think that if darry and paul were in a relationship that they’d be healthy. especially since it’s a soc/greaser relationship AND they’re both guys.

i feel like paul would get kind of annoyed that darry didn’t exactly feel the same way—like even kissing became awkward because darry never felt right and i feel like this led to a lot of fights between the two until darry absolutely breaks down and is just like “i can’t! i can’t fucking do this anymore! i’m trying my best and i can’t feel anything!” and paul takes that kind of personally, to the point where that’s when they break up and their friendship is over

it took a lot of time for darry to heal, it really did. but eventually he did realize it wasn’t his fault and was somewhat grateful to be “too busy for a relationship”, which is what he tells people when they ask if he’s found someone yet, because he knows that no matter who it is, he’s not gonna feel anything much, if at all, other than platonic love.

I’ve talked abt my kpop x pjo hcs already but to add on, Will doesn’t seem to be a kpop fan like the rest of the Apollo cabin. I mean, at the VERY least, he’d be a casual twice listener and probably most definitely listens to txt’s whole discography (like their songs seem “sunny” or give a “sunshine vibe” on the outside, a little silly even but the lyrics are pretty dark and depressing. And hopeless romantic, istg txt’s discography is made just for will. Source: trust me bro). But other than tht, he’s not too into kpop.

Nico on the other hand, he’d love skz (idk why, he’d vibe to them and i hc tht he’d be into noise music), atz (heavy on atz and no im not projecting, i genuinely think he’d like them bc they’re pirates lol and i think he’d like cyberpunk, silver lights and their whole discography. He’d would def get emotional over turbulence, not too late, take me home and mist), dreamcatcher (for obv reasons) and red velvet (dont ask, it just makes sense).

He won’t be like a stan or be as hyperfixated as me (lol) and won’t really talk abt it with anyone else. i see this as something he keeps to himself yet not really hide it if someone brings it up (???) but he’d know abt their cbs and watch their performances with Will (when he gets the opportunity).

In general, I’ve always hc tht the apollo, dionysus and aphrodite cabin as mostly kpop fans bc majority of the idols are either from the apollo, dionysus or aphrodite cabin. With a good amount also in the athena, maybe zeus, nike and hermes cabin.

not to be annoying but i do think a lot of people mischaracterize falin. shes got the most drastic canon v fanon thing going on. which i guess makes sense bc 1. we dont see much of her and 2. lot of the fan stuff are anime-onlies that have seen even less

but i think like a good 90% of the time i see falin-centric art or posts im like hrm hrm hrm thats all wrong no nope no-siree

she's just a cool chick that takes life as it comes, doesn't hold grudges even against a mother that apparently was trying to beat the magic outta her, finds her older brother the coolest person in the world, and has autism about observing life (and death, she loves the ghosts she has a connection to) and nature and taking care of things (including taking care of her brother, which is why she's even in the dungeons; she saw her scrawny mess of a brother and decided she had to fix that).

and i think my favorite part that people don't talk about is... she would have done the same for marcille or laios if it were one of them that was eaten. you could see it in her eyes:

it's what shuro misunderstands about her. it's easy to see her feminine, cute, good girl pieces and forget the rest of her. but she loves things to an ends-of-the-earth extent; the kind of caring that makes you a little insane. and that's how I think she and laios end up on the same page with their weirdness. they have different interests, but they are the same level of committed to those interests.

it's easy to love her, because she probably loves you just as much, if not more.

So I read a prompt about how Wonder Woman found Danny in a trash can (don’t remember which one) and I was bored.

So I took that lil info and made it into an AU.

So basically, Danny get yeeted into this unknown universe and has no where to live. And no where to live means no money. No money means no food. No food means Danny can’t keep his human half sustained.

So what does he do?

Decides to not change into a human and live in a trash can.

Yes you heard that right, live in a trash can.

Because he’s a ghost, he doesn’t have to worry about the germs and stuff. But that doesn’t mean he lives in just any trash can! He lives in a clean one ☝️

AND he also decorated it with his name so other people know it’s his!

And so Danny has been here for a while now and realizes

Holy shit there’s hero’s here- you know what, why doesn’t he have hero’s back home?!

And being minorly annoyed jealous (but he’s never admitting that)he thought:

And so Danny caries on his life, being content with his trash can and scaring whoever comes into his alley. It’s fun. Sure he sometimes needs to ugh overshadow people to feed his human side, but other than that.

It’s going great.

But Danny doesn’t realize that with Amity gone (or smth, you choose) which was his haunt, he slowly makes the trash can into his new haunt.

And slowly but surely, Danny’s beloved haunt trash can starts to become other worldly kinda.

Yk because of the ectoplasm.

So now Danny’s lovely trash can haunt has more space inside and- Hey Danny can actually sleep in it better!! And he got some company too!

In the form of blob ghosts.

Two actually.

They keep his trash can clean and help purifying some corrupted ectoplasm that he finds. Because for some reason this universe’s ectoplasm seems half way artificial and tastes a bit weird. Which is where the blob ghosts help out in.

Everything was great.

Danny was loving the trash can life style.

He has two blob ghosts friends. Which he named Sam and Tucker, and yea they couldn’t talk but that was fine.

He wasn’t lonely, he wasn’t. He had two very much talking friends like Sam and Tucker.

However one day two weirdly dressed people- oh they were hero’s.

Well anyway they found him, one woman stripper and one furry guy.

But it was on accident! He was just peaking out of his beloved haunt trash can, and they spotted him.

He stared, they stared back.

Then the woman stripper asked him questions, even when he said:

“Don’t mind me, have a nice day!”

But they just kept bother him and giving him weird looks and glances.

Which- rude.

Didn’t they see his mark on his haunt trash can? Obviously it means it’s his home, so they shouldn’t be bothering him still. He’s safe as can be.

Plus.

It’s not like he’s looking at them in suspicion and weirdness, I mean look at them! What kinda cheep knock off vampire fury mix and American stripper style clothing are those!

They should mind their own business!

Steve who struggles to read people. Who ended up in the popular crowd cuz he’d occasionally make blunt remarks or answer a little too honestly, and people mistook that for haughtiness.

Steve who was seen as ‘cool’ because if anyone tried to bully him he’d shoot back wise cracks, not realizing the other was trying to belittle him. And people ate it up. Thought he was funny. Steve who serves as good as he gets, who can take a joke. Steve who’s cool.

Steve who struggles to know when someone is truly mad or just playing around. Who doesn’t pick up on someone being passive aggressive.

And Eddie who never beats around the bush. Who wears his heart on his sleeve, who says exactly what’s on his mind. Who’s so expressive and real that Steve doesn’t have to wonder if he’s missing something, if Eddie is saying one thing but means the other.

Robin who is just the same. Who doesn’t belittle him when he asks what people mean, or takes something literal. He doesn’t feel like he’s an idiot when she corrects him either.

Thinking about a random villain attack happening in the city one Friday night when you’re out partying with friends at a local dive bar, and you end up getting caught in the crossfire when a blast knocks a chunk of a wall crashes down around you and traps your leg. Knocking your head when it hits the pavement as you cry out in pain, and people act like they can’t even see you as they flee the scene.

But Bakugou and Kirishima happen to be at another bar across the street, off duty after a long double shift as the carnage happens. Racing outside to assist the other sidekicks and Pro’s that are now on the scene as Bakugou spots you laying trapped beneath the rubble.

And usually he would’ve left you to someone else, another hero or sidekick can race over to check that you’re okay and reassure you that ambulances are on the way— but he sees the look of fear in your eyes and he finds himself racing over to you. Moving the rubble from your leg with ease, but not attempting to move you as he crouches down beside you, lifting your head from the ground as he winces at the wetness that sticks to his palm as he cradles your head so delicately.

“Hey, hey—” He rasps, his voice harsh as he tries to get you to calm down, “You’re gonna be okay, yeah.”

“Please don’t leave me.” Tears tumble down your temples now as the medics circle around you, assessing your injuries before moving you onto a stretcher.

Bakugou’s never heard that request from someone before, he’s never stuck around someone long enough for the medics to arrive and move someone onto a stretcher.

And he can feel the slight grip you keep on his hand as the stretcher begins to roll, his feet following beside it as if on instinct as he walks towards the ambulance with you until you reach the open doors.

But he hesitates — It’s as though all those memories from when he was a teenager come flooding back as he remembers everything that happened to him before.

So he just stands there and watches you get placed into the ambulance, stoic as the sirens cry out and the lights begin to flash.

“Hey man, you okay?” Kirishima claps his shoulder and Bakugou is still standing in place.

“M’fine.” He shrugs his shoulder to move Kirishima’s hand as he watches you drive away.

And he doesn’t sleep that night. Tossing and turning as your terrified face plays in his mind, the soft sound to your voice when you begged him to stay with you. He hates himself for not going.

He knows he should go to the hospital to check if you’re okay, to sit with you like you’d asked him to. But he’s got another shift in less than four hours, and he doesn’t even know your name.

He doesn’t even know if you’re still alive.

But even then he makes no attempt to move as he lays motionless in bed staring at the ceiling, trying to get the image of your terrified eyes peering up at him out of his head.
