i finally did it. i went back and looked at old lists of former classmates from middle and high school + a couple of other schools, hoping for some potential middle name inspiration. (honestly idk if i want a middle name but looking for options doesn't hurt.) it was disappointing. the options (for hispanic guys) were either

the absolute most bland Spanish names - shit like Luis, José, Francisco, Alejandro, etc.

the most bland English names - like Joshua, James, Kevin, Nathan, etc.

basic names that work in both languages - like Daniel, Ivan/Iván, Joel, etc.

Hispanicized variants of English names - Brayan instead of Brian

completely made-up names

like come on. that's boring. and the only names i vibed with at all were:

obscure Spanish biblical name that sounds bad in English

obscure English biblical name that sounds bad in Spanish

Indian name i have no business using

English name that sounds bad in Spanish and has no Spanish cognate

English name that sounds too different pronounced in Spanish and i don't like the Spanish cognate

common English name that sounds bad in Spanish and i don't vibe with its most direct Spanish cognate. oh who am i kidding it's Matthew. (and Mateo is nice, just not for me.)

unfortunately i don't have any elementary school lists but i do remember the Spanish names having more variety. like yeah of course there were several people named Juan, José, Luis, etc. but there was also Federico, Joaquín, Sebastián, Rigoberto, Martín, etc. and i may not vibe with those names but at least it gives me decent options that my family can actually pronounce. (i have a lot of family that doesn't speak English well.)

i'm just glad i'm a name nerd. otherwise i'd probably just not even bother trying to find a middle name. i already had a hard enough time finding one name, let alone two.

Does it ever make you a little crazy insane thinking about how Jesper and Wylan both have these gaping absences in their families, these needs that haven't been met for years, but as their stories become parallel, they find exactly what they need in each other's lives?

Because okay, hear me out, Jesper couldn't save his mom, nor can he ever bring her back, but he was able to help Wylan save his mom. His mom who was supposed to be dead. He was able to help bring her back in a way that he will never able to do for his own mom. And no, she'll never be Aditi, but I think she'll grow to love him as a son-in-law.

Wylan, meanwhile, lost his father's love at a young age. He will never be good enough for Jan, because Jan refuses to love or accept him as he is. But Colm, Jesper's father who loves him, who only wants the best for his son, meets Wylan when he's easily at his lowest point in life, when he's wrapped up in crime and scandal, and what does he say? "I think you’d be good for [Jesper]." And that means everything.

Jesper and Wylan don't just complement each other as a couple, their lives thread together like stitches closing long open wounds.
