Kachina’s name is funny

Its 2 am and i cant stop thinking about this and i need to get it out bc every single time i look at her name i think of this and can’t even enjoy the storyline aaaaaa lmao

So! We’ve seen that genshin has a history of making up the most bizarre names ever, like idek what happened after inazuma or if sumeru’s names are this funny (idk much about the region it’s inspired in so forgive me for being uneducated), BUT, i do know this: there’s a poor npc in fontaine literally called Book, just Book, wtf genshin, there’s a lot of npcs and pplcalled weird things, and with Natlan that’s wven more obvious that while genshin team does great stuff for plotlines and inspiration for each region, they just say WHATEVER WHEEEEE for names. Bc, who calls themselves/their children Boba? Like wtf?! I’m not even mad about it just why??

I play the game in spanish btw, and Boba is like calling yourself silly or stupid, a friend told me that the English equivalent was also something along those lines so we know this is on purpose? Again wtf lmao

Then there’s the npc called Umi, isn’t that ocean in japanese? And said npc is from the ocean tribe dont get me wrong, if we want to make an accurate “inspiration” from America (America is a continent, ill throttle the person that says its a country thanks) it makes sense to have lots of names that come from different places bc we do have a mix of cultures that resulted in today’s life, but it doesn’t make any sense in Natlan’s whole description, bc these ppl are described as ppl that don’t go out of their country at all? They do receive visitors and i imagine one or two would probably want to stay but it’s still strange, noted, Umi is not the only strange name i’ve seen but i dont keep a notebook with all of genshin’s lore/plot/naming/etc holes bc i would have to make it a full time job. So far a couple things make no sense to me, BUT ALSO! Natlan is culturally rich and filled with stuff i approve, i mean, i like it so far, the legends, myths and way of interaction between characters is rivh and meaningful, i especially loved a quest about a shadow needles bc it felt like revisiting old myths from my memory!

the main quest relating to Kachina is also very interesting and despite it being complete fiction, the way the underworld is constructed is also reminiscent of myths and legends - ik its not called underworld, sorry, its 2am i forgot the name - that place felt to me like one of the scary tales ppl traditionally tell each other but with a very Teyvat element mixed in, and that’s good in my book

there’s also the apparent mix of maya, inca and aztecas in culture and storytelling? And its also true that America has more stories about wars and warriors known to ourselves and the rest of the world? I’d probably have much more to say about this if i had slept, but there are no towns named Fighting soul in my country for no reason, which i find funny and sad af bc wars are shitty excuses to steal and do awful awful things, but whatever. There’s also the way they captured the behavior of ppl in the coasts, kudos to them for that, obviously things irl are not always that good or pretty and some parts of America do have a lot of poverty bc corruption is also shit, but it is true that ppl (i’ve met) in the coast is much mote laidback than in the city, more prone to random music and parties and dancing, big big parties too, the surf part i have never seen in my country so no comments there

some stuff (like the food) is a bit so so for me (im still wondering where shrimp tacos were invented wtf, there’s also too much corn which i find hilarious), and im not even gonna talk about the saurian stuff bc his post is already long enough without talking about Kachina

anyways! in general i really liked it.

nunber 3 and less important is the K, it’s overused in Natlan and i find it funny bc many ppl here use the c instead, the k it’s actually more rare in names unless your name is Katheryn or unusual (i once heard the name Ikza and I believe its cool, just not common)…just a thought but: Quinich sounds too much like Quiche so that’s why ill allow Kinich but the qu is way more vommon

number 2 the Ka is just fine, but the China. I just…China is a countey and I can’t help but think of it! Especially bc in spanish it aounds the exact same

number 1 and my biggest concern wity her name, and this is way more personal but I JUST CANT UNSEE IT! In my country we sometimes refer to young ppl as chino or china which is also the way to call ppl from China (probably not coincide but I haven’t researched why this happened to the slang in the first place) so maybe when someone is not listening to you or when they are being tricky or hot headed its bot rare flr someone else to say “¡Este chino/a!” Like saying “this little troublemaker!” Or smth like “¡esta china no hace caso!” Which means “this girl won’t listen/obey!” You could even say “la china de allá” which would mean you are pointing to a girl that is most definitely not chinese but it’s in your field of vision

its not used to denigrate anyonebut it is commonly used as slang by both adults and kids, sometimes even elderly will use it but in more informal situations…

this is why, it feels so damn weird to keep reading and hearing Kachina, sometimes i think im reading ‘pa aca china” kinda “come here kid” and other times im reading the equivalent of ka-girl

I obviously don’t blame the developers or genshin team for not knowing this (i do blame them for Poisson-Fish, Livre-Book, Boba-Silly, etc etc) but i just cant unsee it, even in serious situations its so weirdly funny and awkward

NO BECAUSE !!! THIS IS SOMETHING I COULD TALK ABOUT FOR HOURS just. let me rant for a moment .

I had to watch some episodes w the spanish dub for convenience related things and it made me realize just how MUCH of an impact the characters voices have on our perception of the characters itself. Example and main reason on why I had this revelation: All South Park I've watched (except obv these eps I'm talking about) I've watched them in english, bc I prefer it, and Stan has always been my fav of the main four. Then after watching 4-5 episodes w the spanish dub I stopped for a moment and went "Damn, if Kyle had this tone on the original dub he would definitely be my favourite" AND THATS WHEN I REALIZED IT !!! The reason why Stan has always been my favourite is bc his constant monotone tone along w other specific details he expresses himself with that others characters don't have are absolutely HILARIOUS to me, meanwhile in the spanish dub the reason why Kyle stands out WAY more is because compared to him everyone's voice is just kinda plain and... idk ,weird. Doesn't show any specific emotion at all like, ever. But Kyles voice on the other hand SHOWS things, it's SASSY, it's mostly EXASPERATED, it's EXPRESSIVE !!!!!!!!! so if anyone watches the spanish dub it's more likely to like him the most AND ITS ALL BECAUSE OF HIS VOICE. ITS JUST SO IMPORTANT THAT HHHHFKYF anyways yeah the characters voice it's just so important for how it's viewed it literally can completely alter the sense and the energy it gives as a whole while just. talking. not even changing any of the dialogue. just pure tone and delivery. It's INSANE

hiii delfi! good morning! your past abt the US and its shitty geography were the first thing i read today and uhh i'm not very informed on US geography so that was a lesson and a half lmao

anywayy u said u wanted to hear more country shenanigans so let me provide u with some bullshit that germany has to offer!

as far as shitty geography goes, we don't have too much going on because we're not that big. we have 16 states ("Bundesländer") in total, 3 of which are "Stadtstaaten" (=city-states) which basically means that they are both a state and the state's capital at once (those three are Hamburg, Bremen, and Berlin - yes, Berlin as in the capital of Germany). One thing that is kind of similar to the US and their north/south/west/whatever states is that we have three states that are called Sachsen (Saxony), Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), and Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt). I can't tell you why they're all called Sachsen, they just are. We also have a state called Saarland which is (jokingly) the Alabama of Germany. No idea where that joke came from but everybody likes to make fun of Saarland.

One thing that I personally find hilarious is that we have cities with the same names, too. My favourite example is Frankfurt. There's one Frankfurt that is a huge city, incredibly important, I believe the headquarters of the European Central Bank as well as a lot of other banks are situated in Frankfurt. But officially we call this gigantic important city "Frankfurt am Main" (Main is a river that Frankfurt is next to, "Frankfurt next to the Main") as to not offend some town with 10 times less inhabitants that also happens to be called Frankfurt (Frankfurt an der Oder, another river). We don't add the name of the state to specify the town like the US does, we take the nearest river or sometimes the administrative districts it's in (Haag in Oberbayern, for example, which is "Haag in Upper Bavaria").

Okay useless geography lesson over, now for the funnier bits! (idk why i even put all the geography here ooof sorry)

The most well known fuckery is probably the "Bielefeldverschwörung" (Bielefeld conspiracy). Basically, all of Germany has collectively decided that the city Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia does not exist. Anything that might prove us wrong is simply the work of aliens. It's basically a meme that the entire country accepted as fact. Bielefeld does not exist. (The origin is that some college students in the 90's had a running gag about Bielefeld not being real and it caught on on the internet. The plan was to prove the conspiracy theories, no matter how outlandish they are, can and will be defended even if they are blatantly wrong. It's hilarious imo)

Another thing is the Sprachbarriere (language barrier? is that a thing?). Every state has a different dialect and even the districts have different dialects sometimes. Some of the dialects aren't that unintelligible but then there are others where you think you suddenly entered a different country because you simply don't understand anything. Yes technically, we all speak German. But the only actual universal language is hochdeutsch (=high german, which really doesn't mean anything other than "normal german").

Personally, I'm from the south of Germany. Rural Upper Bavaria (Oberbayern) to be exact. Here, people speak oberbayrisch and it's sometimes impossible to understand - even for me, someone who has lived here all their life but doesn't speak it (because my parents aren't from here and don't speak it either).

There are other notorious dialects, like the Berliner Schnauze (can't think of a literal translation other than "Berlin snout" rn, it's basically just the dialect in Berlin), which might seem pretty rude and harsh to non-Berlin folks, but it's not meant to be rude.

Another example is Plattdeutsch ("flat german"?) which is spoken in the north. I don't know much about it but it sounds funny.

Then there is sächsisch. My favourite dialect of them all because i can imitate it and it's so funny. It's spoken in Saxony.

Another one that I like a lot is schwäbisch (=swabian). It's spoken in Baden Württemberg, particularly in central and southern Württemberg. It's pretty nuanced with several versions and it's almost impossible to understand tbh. Most of my family is from the Swabian Alb, so technically i should be able to understand it but oh boy do i have difficulties!

There are a lot more that i'm not talking about here tho because i don't know them!

With all those regional differences in language there are also some differences in what we call certain things and we WILL fight over those.

An example are bread rolls. You see, in Bavaria we call them "Semmel", in Baden-Württemberg we call them "Weckle" (i think that's how it's spelled but i'm not sure), in Thuringia we call them "Brötchen" (that's what i call them too), and in Berlin they're "Schrippen". I know I probably didn't mention all the versions but these are the ones i know. We fight about that. Daily. My family is a fun mix of Baden-Württemberg, Thuringia, and Bavaria, so everyday we argue about whether it's Brötchen, Semmeln, or Weckle. Nobody wins. (Brötchen are superior tho. Fight Me.)

The same thing happens for pancakes (Eierkuchen or Pfannkuchen) and another baked thing that I don't know the proper English name of. We call them Berliner, Krapfen, Pfannkuchen, Kreppel, Puffel, and probably so many other things lmao. Nobody ever wins but it's bound to start a fight.

Same thing goes for Nutella. German has three articles, a masculine one (der), a feminine one (die), and a neutral one (das). People will argue about the grammatical gender of Nutella. Personally I believe it's "das Nutella" and everything else is an atrocity.

having so many dialects is insane omg?? we have different accents here, not dialects. at least i’m not aware of argentina having different dialects, that’s mostly for argentina and other spanish speaking countries. for example in spain in they use coger in the to grab something meaning (i have been scrolling on my camera roll for about 15 minutes looking for the meme) (FOUND IT)

german is so nice to listen to, i actually listen to asmr zeitgeist’s german videos a lot because not understanding anything with the soft whispers make my brain go zzzzzzz

#16 I'm in a Disney Show

(i agree with dukeofonions here) i always forget this episode exists. it was ok in terms of being happy for real life Thomas but as a Sanders Sides episode it didn't do anything. the sides were just giving their opinions but it wasn't very funny or interesting. also i'm bitter because it made me look up the episode he was in and i didn't like it at all. i don't know if i'm too old for those Disney shows now but Thomas was literally the only good part of it, everything else was really dull and boring imo. a waste of time.

however, Logan supporting clickbait is one of the funniest things ever, and i'll never forget it.

#15 Becoming A Cartoon

i didn't hate this episode but it was just .. meh.. you know? several factors contribute to this. one, i couldn't feel much nostalgia for Butch Hartman's shows because i watched them in Spanish, and everything feels really weird when they speak English, i don't like how my old cartoons sound in English. two, it was disappointing to me because we were all desperately waiting for Plot™ and instead they give us this short episode about nothing (oh how the tables have turned now it's the other way around haha). and three, i didn't like the style of the animation :/ their faces and expressions freaked me out, Roman's douchey face still haunts me.

#14 Way Too Adult

here i'm biased because i don't like Patton much, and i didn't back when i watched the series the first time either, so this video was a little disappointingwithout the rest. also it wasn't relatable to me because i am still too young and dependent on my parents haha. but Patton is funny and it's funny to laugh at Thomas' struggling.

#13 The Dark Side of Disney

i've never been a fan of Disney movies. i actually never watched Mulan or the Lion King or Aladdin as a kid, so meh. i liked the ending, though, it was cool to see Virgil have fun and be right for once. it does make me a bit uncomfortable because the way Thomas tries too hard with Virgil's mouth movements and his low voice reminds me of a guy that had made me v uncomfortable not long before watching that video. so an icky feel overall.

#12 A New Year of Lying to Myself

this video was actually kind of fogettable to me. i had a hard time connecting the voices in the song to the characters and idk. i don't love it nor hate it, just .. neutral.

#11 My True Identity

pretty much the same opinion as dukeofonions, again. it's a good introduction and it's good that it was the beginning of it all but on its own it's not very special. i think it's awesome on Thomas to have come up with such a clever idea, like choosing the dad, the teacher and the prince and putting them together and match them with thoughts?? that fit so perfectly?? it really is just very impressive when you think about it, that it was just a random idea he had for a short 5 minute video.

#10 Taking on Anxiety

i liked this video a lot because when i watched it i had recently been a lot on tumblr, and found out through relatable posts that i had anxiety. so watching this video was really fun and it made me happy to feel so seen, specially the intro when Thomas just talks about what it's like to have Anxiety and Virgil is so smug about it.

#9 Growing Up

once more, Patton isn't my favorite. so that's why i'm putting this here, plus the echo at the end askjhsahg, but i love love this video. i remember we were waiting and oh so ready for the angst of nobody taking Patton seriously. and we received!! i love that though Roman and Logan are antagonists here, they're both so happy about Thomas wanting to have a healthy life. and i just adore the way Logan admits his mistake at the end and asks Patton directly. my heart... also aw.. the nostalgia. i remember none of us knew how to spell Patton's name and were writing it in very funny ways until Thomas and Joan told us lol.

#8 The Mind vs The Heart

when i watched this video the first times i didn't like it much, because i only had eyes for Virgil, but later i came back to it and loved it. so taking that into account i'm putting it here. logicality was the first ship i ever shipped in the show because i saw a gifset on tumblr of Patton screaming "what do you know about love?!" and Logan "apparently more than YOU" and the caption said "MARRIED", and i thought hey yeah... anyway. i love them. they're both my dads since that day.

this video is so so so relatable and i love it. Logan and Patton are so much fun arguing and i love how they compromise at the end and work together. im reconsidering.. i might move it higher? no, fine i'll leave it here.

#7 Making Some Changes

this video was absolutely hilarious. i personally couldn't see it as the Sides still once they were acted by Thomas' friends, i enjoyed it more as that bunch being silly and trying to be the sides but failing in so many ways, while sometimes nailing stuff suddenly. i really don't take this one too seriously as an episode. except Joan!Logan and Valerie!Logan, my beloved... i love how Joan acted as Logan and their voice and that they kept their ace ring on.. there's a reason i had them as my icon for so long. and Valerie looks a bit (a lot) like me with the glasses and dressed in dark colors, plus she spoke Spanish and there's .. no words to describe the joy i felt when seeing/hearing that. wait i'm getting emotional...

#6 My Personality Q&A

when i watched this Virgil was my favorite side and i didn't care much about the rest lol. when i heard his answers i related to him SO much it was scary, and also his voice is so soft and it was all very comforting. it was also when i first starting looking at Logan with more attention, because when he brought up Big Hero 6 and Fall Out Boy and said he didn't sing and would recite it like a poem? it only took a couple seconds but my brain said "me" and never went back.

now this video is a little underwhelming to watch for me, most of the appeal for me was in finding out the answers, and also watching it when we didn't know a lot about the sides. now we know more and want to know more so it's not as fun to me as it was first.

#5 Alone on Valentines Day

i love Valerie, and the idea of this video was perfect and so perfectly excecuted. every side just giving their crazy opinions on how to woo a random stranger, i laughed SO much. first with Logan speaking simlish out of nowhere? at that point i didn't know practically anything about the sims except that it was some video game and the whiplash of Logan going AYO and the rest killed me. then when Roman whipped out that dialogue in Spanish??? my life was completed. i've never felt more happy than i did in that moment gosh. just the hilarity of Roman's drama, the shock of them speaking Spanish suddenly like that, the absolute JOY of seeing a creator i like speak (may i say) perfect Spanish, the other characters' faces after that.. never been happier.

also the conclusion was so cute. Virgil solving the whole problem without wanting to. i loved it.

#4 Am I Original

i think this video speaks for itself. it was fun to watch them all do the ideas Roman had, plus Logan and Virgil nodding at each other, (i love them so much), plus the angst at the end of Roman's perfectionism, plus Roman's just perfect name. this video has it all.

i think Thomas posted it kind of late at night and i watched it at 7am in the classroom as i waited for my classmates to arrive and the class to start. (i usually was like 40 minutes early to school due to mom’s work). i had to contain my laughter and it wasn’t easy.

#3 Losing My Motivation

i started loving this video after a while, when Logan passed Virgil in the position for my favorite side. but once he did this episode was beautiful. it's so funny and i love Logan and Patton's dynamic so much. and the video also so damn relatable in general. i felt so seen with it because they named all the problems i have when procrastinating, down to Patton's vague explanation of his feelings, it's exactly how i feel every time i want to do stuff. and the plot twist! i can hear the dramatic sound effect and see how they all turn to Logan clearly in my head, and it always makes me smile. plus there's so much Logan angst that can be dug up and overanalized. i love to watch it over and over.

#2 Accepting Anxiety

this video was perfect. everything we wanted. we knew it was coming and it delivered perfectly, better than any fanfic done in the waiting time. the week between the parts was agonizing but in a fun way somehow. i remember precisely when i was watching part 2 in my living room. i screamed. and i cried, a lot. i was feeling terrible at that time in my life and Thomas was such a comforting presence and i can't begin to describe how this episode made me feel.

and later it is always fun to rewatch with all their different reactions to being in Virgil's room, the energy of that was on point. Thomas is such a great actor and the characters where just amazingly performed. plus it gave so much to talk adn think about, the idea of the rooms, lots lots of insight into the characters, foreshadowing, so much. it's just perfect i have nothing else to say.

#1 (for purely emotional reasons, ironically) My Negative Thinking

i think Accepting Anxiety is the best episode of the season objectively but my favorite is My Negative Thinking. because i love Virgil and Logan so much and seeing them argue together was and is great. the comfort.. i can't repeat that word enough throughout this post. it's such a soft video while not being overwhelming with Patton and Roman's outbursts. just quiet (mostly) and clear and with perfectly timed humour.

Logan my beloved.. learning spanish... helping me with my own anxiety.. and their debate was so good. and the fact that they were friends i- i can't. Virgil didn't think Logan liked him and Logan told him explicitly that he did and the casual softness of it i cant even. Logan is happy that he tried.. it's just marvelous. Virgil and Logan as best friends will always be my favorite pair, and their dynamic will always be what i strive for in any relationship i might form, with both sides silently comforting each other within their own limits and realistic perspectives. so nice.

WHAT HAPPENED TO PANEL OF SAYING HE TRUSTS DEKU??? WHAT THE FUCK WHAT DID IT BECOME???? I AM FULL OF GRIEF

firstly, (1) YESSSS, BAKUDEKU FANS ARE EATIN’ GOOD IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, and (2) thank you so much to that last anon!! this made me smile so hard aw.

and second, so! I kind of want to defend the fan scanlation (and I guess the Spanish one too) a bit, though. because while I do believe Caleb Cook’s English translation over at Viz/Manga Plus is the correct one, I finally found a scan of the original panel in Japanese, and looking at it I completely understand why there was some confusion lol.

(disclaimer: pretty much all my knowledge of Japanese comes from two semesters of intro-level courses I took in college, plus whatever I’ve absorbed from two decades of reading manga and watching anime. so basically very little, lol. if I’m wrong about any of this please let me know.)

basically, it all comes down to Japanese grammar. specifically, the fact that in Japanese, sentences don’t necessarily need to have a subject OR an object. you can literally write a sentence in Japanese with JUST a verb, and it would still be technically correct. an example of this would be “itadakimasu”, which is often translated in anime/manga as “thanks for the meal”, but which literally just means “[to] receive.” that’s it. but it’s understood from the context that what you’re really saying is “[I/we] will receive [this good fucking food].” and so all you need to say is the “receive” part. to a native English speaker it’s both hilarious and pretty brilliant honestly, but I digress.

anyway! so yeah, with sentences like this there’s a heavy reliance on using context in order to understand exactly WHO is doing the thing, and who/what is being thinged, or is having the thing done to them. so why do I bring this up? basically, to explain that depending on how you interpret the context of Katsuki’s sentence here, there are multiple ways to translate it. if this sentence had been written in English, there would have been no doubt whatsoever who Katsuki was talking about, because it would have been written like this:

“Deku trusts you, but...”

clear as day! Deku is the subject, All Might is the object. pack it up folks, we’re done here.

but in Japanese, the sentence is worded like this instead:

“Deku wa shinji kitte kkedo saa...”

with the three parts being (1) Deku, (2) shinji kitte (trusts), and (3) kkedo saa (but).

which, hilariously, can be interpreted in at least THREE DIFFERENT WAYS, mostly because “wa” is a weird fucking particle which can technically mark either a subject OR an object. and so you could read it as “Deku trusts...”, OR you could read it as “[as for] Deku, [I/you] trust him...” because if Deku is the object, and no subject is specified, the most likely subject is either Katsuki, or All Might.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE. since the object of the verb “trust” is unspecified, Katsuki could technically be talking about ANYTHING. in addition to Deku, he could be talking about himself, or All Might, or even All Might’s successor notebook (since he brings that up in the very next panel), or just TRUST IN GENERAL, I.E. DEKU IS JUST A VERY TRUSTING GUY.

basically, here are a few of the possible ways you could interpret this sentence, all of which, as far as I’m aware, are grammatically correct.

Deku trusts me

Deku trusts you

I trust Deku

you trust Deku

and to add on to that even further, the verb “shinjiru” which is used here basically means “to believe/to trust/to have faith in” in English, but each of those translations has a slightly different nuance. “I trust you” carries a slightly different meaning from “I believe in you”; the former implies emotional trust, whereas the latter has more of a “I have confidence in you and what you are capable of” type of feel to it. so the exact same sentence can have very different connotations depending on which English verb a translator decides to use.

so basically what it boils down to is that the translator has to take (1) their knowledge of the story and its characters and their relationships, and combine that with (2) the context of the sentence and the general conversation, and (3) their ability to accurately convey what they believe is the intended meaning in the new language, be it English or Spanish or whatever else. and hence in one translation it becomes “I trust Deku”, while in another it’s “Deku trusts you.”

but given the context, and how it’s worded, the latter is almost certainly what Horikoshi actually intended. for one, my understanding is that if “Deku” had actually been the object of the sentence, Katsuki would have most likely used a different particle (“ni”?) (ETA: according to @hanashimas it would have been “wo”; thank you!) rather than “wa.” but also because it just makes more sense in the context of their discussion. Katsuki uses this sentence as a way of segueing into the topic of the fourth OFA successor, and subsequently implies that he thinks All Might is hiding something from them. and so, as much as I love the sentence “I trust Deku” coming from Katsuki’s mouth (and it’s a lot, you guys. I loved it a LOT), I have to admit it makes much more sense for him to be saying “Deku trusts you, but you’re keeping something secret, aren’t you?” rather than being all “I TRUST DEKU SO MUCH BTW” just completely out of the fucking blue lmao.

anyway! so thus concludes our examination of this sneaky little sentence which proved to be just as troublesome as its owner! again please take this all with a grain of salt as my level of Japanese knowledge is basically “can read hiragana & katakana and plug things into jisho and google translate” lol. but this isn’t the first time Horikoshi’s dialogue has caused some confusion, and so I thought it was worth breaking it down because idk I JUST THINK IT’S INTERESTING OKAY.

That’s probably because I am and am fairly vocal about it.

I live in the US and am racially pretty damn white, but my mother’s family is from Mexico. (Sorta. They’ve been in the US for a while now, and we’re not exactly sure who came across the border when because most old Mexican men can give Gentarou a run for his money when it comes to telling mentiras.) I was raised speaking both English and baby Spanish, but I lost the opportunity to practice it all that often when I was pretty little and as such forgot almost all of it, hahaha. Still, I can understand most written Spanish and a fair bit of common spoken Spanish, and I speak Spanglish with my mom. Growing up mostly white is pretty weird, since I don’t feel Latino enough to fit in with my own family (but they ARE my family) but also not white enough to fit in completely with my white peers. They don’t get how enchiladas are comfort food or how the words “mijo” and “mija” are love incarnate. They don’t get it why my parents have three bags of tortillas in their fridge at all times (it’s because I keep stealing them whenever I run out at my house) or the importance of owning a big-ass olla. It’s like... I don’t want to intrude in spaces where I don’t necessarily feel I have the right to belong, but I also want to acknowledge the struggle of my grandparents who worked as migrant farmers instead of going to school and gave up everything they had to give their kids a better life. I wonder how well I can do that, having forgotten their language and living as so much as a product of “American melting pot” culture. It’s... tricky. Identity is tricky.

Point is, I want to see Dice casually calling Otome “vieja”.

ANYWAY. Anime thoughts. I’ll put them under a cut for anyone concerned about spoilers.

The little kick the Buster Bros did in the opening on “buttobasu” (send ‘em flying) made me involuntarily laugh out loud. So dorky. Love them for that.

I was not sold on the opening back when I saw it in the previews, but I actually liked the full version quite a lot. The rap bits are a lot more impressive than the sort of generic chorus.

Love how it opened on TDD. I hope other episodes will follow suit and give more TDD backstory, because I think it delivers the best emotional impact when you know the reasons the anime boys are duking it out with one another.

TDD Samatoki has giant eyelashes even in the anime. Jesus christ.

TDD Ramuda appeared for about three seconds, and I was appeased.

The Buster Bros bit didn’t interest me too much, personally, but I thought it set the tone for the series really nicely. I also thought that a bunch of random dudes ganging up on these children and being like, “Heh heh, bitch, whatcha gonna do? We have microphones!” is hilarious.

BB rap was fantastic. I appreciated how much of a mix this was between the ARB and manga styles in terms of the way the raps appeared. Having the lyrics on screen was a GREAT thing for me as well. I also really enjoyed the moment where Saburou pushed Jirou out of the way and Ichirou stopped Jirou before he could retaliate. It wasn’t a distraction from the song at all but also characterized the familial interactions so clearly in just a few seconds. Kudos.

My VPN connection died during Ichijiku’s first talk with Otome, so idk what went on there.

I know Samatoki is supposed to be taken seriously, but for the life of me, I really can’t. I kept on snickering the whole time he was talking to the yakuza NPCs and acting tough. All his posturing is ridiculous to me.

Loved that MTC rap, although I kept laughing at that too. MTC is overkill.

I have a love/hate relationship with Samatoki’s speaker ever since I had to redraw part of that motherfucker sometime last year, but it is really damn cool looking. The animation for it blew me away. LOVED THAT.

Riou was there :)

I finally understood the significance of the cigarette kiss between Samatoki and Juuto. It’s to symbolize the whole “I scratch your back, you scratch mine” professional relationship they have, but I did think Juuto was leaning in for a kiss for a really bizarre moment.

The Fling Posse interactions were a huge hit with me. I love seeing them hang out with one another and horse around the way that they do. Like the BBs’ scene, this was a great establishing shot for them.

I love how Dice rolls with Ramuda’s gratuitous English without missing a beat.

FP song wasn’t as hardcore as some of the other ones, but it was executed very well. Love the wordplay with the end of Ramuda’s and the beginning of Gentarou’s verse.

THE HIGH FIVE AT THE END OF THE SONG... HOO HOO!! NOW THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT, BABY! NOW THAT’S FRIENDSHIP RIGHT THERE!

Hypmic NPCs lowkey piss me off, especially all the “Kyaaa~!!!!” female NPC types. I get that they’re not supposed to be thought about all that much, but seriously...? Why is running from fangirls a plot point that keeps on being revisited?

They left Dice’s money behind... Bruh.......

Love how Doppo and Hifumi barge into Jakurai’s office nonchalantly.

The bit with the nurse establishes Hifumi’s character very well, although I still think Doppo’s being kind of an ass when he pulls Hifumi’s jacket off.

The whole fucking “terrorists on the roof” bit made me laugh again. Some of the Hypmic plot points are so contrived that I find them funny. It’s all silly good fun.

Love that rappers show up to push past the bumbling security guards/police. Excuse me, please, let me through... I’m a rapper.

Jakurai’s speaker was very well animated, but the way it appeared made me think of the Lionsgate logo. The mic animation was pretty cool too.

JAKURAI’S RAP ACTUALLY BLEW ME AWAY. I’m normally not a fan of Jakurai raps, but god DAMN was that cool.

Hifumi and Doppo didn’t drop the ball either. Fuck it UP, Matenrou.

I can’t believe they dropped lightning bolts on two people... especially when one was holding someone else hostage. Is that woman okay? Did she get fucking vaporized? I’ll never know.

Otome’s character model moves pretty stiffly, which I think actually helps her character because of how stoic she tries to act overall.

Ending song was dope. I wonder if they’ll feature other divisions in the endings of other episodes.

Ramuda leaping a good 3 meters in the air in the final shot is funny as fuck.

Is it somehow common in UK to know some bits of german or??? (Idk nobody really speaks English in Russia normally but somehow still knows the alphabet and/or some general words and can read the brand titles xD German goes like a full Foreign language as you either know it at some decent level or don't know at all xD)

Some people learn German in school but it was not offered at my school, we just had French and Spanish. I don't know anyone who speaks German in physical life though, even the Rammstein fans I've known do not understand the lyrics or care to, really, though my dad does think its hilarious when I tell him what some of his favourites are about.

Still, if you meet someone in the UK who speaks another non-indigenous language I think German is less popular than french but more popular than Spanish?

I finished watching parts 1-4 of Money Heist on netflix recently and this is just a little post about my feelings on it (which turned out to be a lot of negative ones in addition to the happy ones i had while watching it)

i will say that if you are reading this and are interested in watching that there is just. a lot of sexual assault on the show. as of this writing i can think of three things, one of which involves a minor, one of which is ongoing throughout the first two parts and one of which involves drugging another person. if you want to watch and want more details i can let you know if you want.

also if we’re talking about content warnings, that this show is basically two hostage scenarios and as such there are guns and shooting and explosions and violence and blood and death

(lots of blood too people get shot several times through the four parts)

- god damn i love heist shows. all the flashbacks going back and showing actually they planned for this but wait wrench in plan has been thrown but wait actually they can work around it (through desperately taking care of what’s in front of them.)

- That ending theme is so intense and good and hypes me up for the next episode. i like the music in the show, though im slightly confused by the choice of the english language opening (i mean its still very beautiful and it is by a spanish singer so i just dont know why) (i get the introduction of more english language music in the show in season 2 because by then theyve got that sweet sweet netflix money but the first show seems strange to me. idk)

 - i like how the professor is just a very clever guy but he is so thrown off course when things happen that he cant prepare for. like he’s very good at resolving stuff and doing what needs to be done whether or not he already planned for it, but also he got cornered by women in his secret lab twice in this series and i find that hilarious

 - the heist: is happening and various violent and dangerous things have happened which are general knowledge city gang members who are outside of the heist building: I GOTTA GET INTO THAT BUILDING

- name revelations name revelations NAME REVELATIONS (i love when ‘real’ names are highly valued but hidden information)

- my favourite character is nairobi

my favourite currently alive character is lisbon. I dunno I just like her a lot. i liked how smart she was in parts 1 and 2. it’s really rough seeing her adjust to being on the heist team and how much she’s suffered for it. I hope part 5 and further continuations of the show let her get into a more comfortable and useful role in the show instead of one that kinda degrades her capabilities

Tokyo is too hot headed for me. but i did get into this show by watching my sister watch the last few eps of part 4 (not that i realized it at the time) and short haired very angry Tokyo was definitely a big draw for me 

I miss Moscow. i think he was a great dad and though his death was obviously inpactful i wish he hadnt died

im glad berlin is dead because while i enjoy that character and am interested in how the show is exploring the motivations and personality of him even in flashbacks, i dont like his whole thing with Ariadna (but when i first watched the show, i saw the part in the last ep of part 4 where he kissed Palermo and that really cemented his status as ‘cool bi guy’ for me and im conflicted on where i land on him. he’s charming and cool and ultimately does a lot for the heist team by doing the sympathetic interview and the last stand with the police in the vaults, but that doesn’t undo the bad things he’s done.

maybe its because im a sensitive simple baby but im particularly unappreciative of most of the lgbtq+ rep being so morally gray. i mean every gay/bi dude on the show has done some bad stuff (obv Helsinki is the mildest offender in killing Oslo after the latter had suffered the terrible head injury but still. that entire sentence i just wrote out of context is so fucking awful so like. i think im okay with having uncomfortable thoughts about the rep in this show.) like i think stories focusing on criminals usually default to gray morality simply because of the nature of their set up but when you have the professor going ‘we are the resistance’ and when you have them all working so hard to have a plan that doesn’t hurt people (regardless of how it went down in execution and even then, not a single hostage died, and the first heist ended with the team losing three of their members) i think that the main characters are good guys and while i appreciate nuances i just. idk. (especially since Berlin’s bi nature is made known after his death)

Also Manila deserved to have more screen time. Why was she introduced during the time period of the first heist but then she didn’t get to do anything until the second heist. come on gang.

i dont know like. how positive racial representation works in media created from outside can/us. like obvious i wish there were more darker skinned characters who weren’t arturo (and oslo?) There’s lot of easter european people, including Helsinki and Oslo on the main team, and the serbians as backup, with more people in the latter parts. No orominent Black people (that i can remember) until the group of miners towards the end of part 4. Nairobi’s actress is 1/4 Romani which i think is good? again im not familiar (not to mention that raging asshole racist gandia kills her for this ancestry so idk if thats a particularly good work on the shows part) (also i think its cool that they’ve got a south american guy on the show. who is also discriminated against (one time i can remember) because hes from south america.

Ships:

- yes nairobi was slightly homophobic in that scene where she was lying down on the table but also: nairobi/tokyo would be so good

- the canon ships are fine with the exceptions of berlin/ariadna and arturo and any woman who he was even vaguely involved with

- actually honorable mention to Denver/Stockholm specifically their post mint relationship. i think they’re very sweet and i can appreciate dumb jock Denver trying to want the best for Stockholm even when they’re on a break (which like. the only reason they are even fighting is because theyve been thrown back into the pressure cooker that is a hostage heist situation. once they both get out of there because i refuse ot believe that the writers would ever kill either half of this relationship, they will be fine again once theyve got their darling baby boy cincinnati back)

- Look. Berlin is very hot. But i dont like what he does. I like his style and the way he does it. But i fucking hate his actions and his blood lust. Hes so cute tho i cannot stop looking.

- Palermo is super relatable (who hasnt had an unrequited love?) and cute. I like his face. But his release of Gandia was the fucking worst. I dont care if he got character development from Nairobi’s death. FUCK!

-Tokyo being hot was one of the reasons i started watching this show. i also think she’s an impulsive dumbass and her sexual assault of a minor fucking sucked even if it was a kiss. 

- Alicia Sierra. Super cute. Government ordained torturer. Need I say any more? (also she’s a cop but government ordained torturer mostly covers that as well)

The next quadrant Attractive to me personally/Morally compatible! (Please note that all city named gang members are presumed to have the same level of aceptable moral compatibility as long as they are found on the right side of the chart. So basically: unless theyve actually done something on screen i think is super fucked, i think they’re mostly alright and mark them all equally in that aspect, with only how attractive i find them fluctuating):

- Maxing out both stats is The Professor himself! My sister doesnt think hes cute but i disagree. I love a glasses wearing nerd. He seems very nice. i know the whole ‘dont hurt people’ is to play off of public opinion but his last minute decision to spare Raquel’s mom (and having that luckily work out in his favour) really cements his morality to me. A+ boy who is not spared from the stupidity present in this house

- Lisbon! She was super smart and cool in the first two parts. Very brave and totally reasonable in the other two. I love how bad ass she is. I think she’s very cute. She was a cop tho.

- Nairobi! My fave! I love her style and her precision. She has a specific and important role she brings to the team and basically everybody loves her. Her intentions are good. Actually i feel she should be closer to the professor than the other robbers in terms of moral compatibility, especially with her attempted matriarchy in the first heist. Wish she wasnt dead 8(

-Stockholm and Manila are about the same level of attractiveness to me, Denver is very handsome in a jockish way, Rio’s got that cute baby face look, but that doesn’t do it for me as much as it does for Tokyo.I think Marseille and Oslo are supposed to be switched lol, i thought oslo was very cute. I can only guess at his morality considered he got murdered first, but oh well. Marseille... i love his dog story and his attempt to comfort the professor after Lisbon’s supposed death.

All in all. Despite my problems with this show, i’ll probably keep watching because its really tense, action packed and twisty as heck, just as a good heist show should be. and honestly aside from the taz heist live show i dont think i can name many heist media that explicity include gay characters (though to be fair, i have not sought out a lot of heist media so maybe thats on me for not looking.) okay so i grew up monolingual but learned french pretty early in school, took 6 years of latin, 3 years of german, 2 years of spanish, also i use the internet in english and read a lot so id say my english is pretty good, lived in norway for four months, and now i'm in my first year of uni studying modern standard arabic and egyptian vernacular. (also took some italian at some point but forgot almost all of it.)

you have no idea how much the lines begin to blur between the languages. it can be hard to get in the right headspace, but i dont think there ever really is a 'switch'. like i'll be explaining something and go like

"okay, the next word is 'train station'. i need it in french. uhhhh قطار. nope, that's arabic and it means train. uhhhhhh *auditory memory of a german intercom* 'IC-Zug nach...' nope thats german. uhhhhhhhhh station station station... arrêt, nope that's stop, uhhhhhh fuckin ... *frustrated finger snapping* GARE jeeeesus christ"

another funny thing i discovered is that my go-to filler word changes overtime, based on the language ive been using the most, even tho its always an iteration of 'and'. like a couple years ago it was y in spanish, after i came back from norway it was og, now its و (wa) in arabic. idk i think this is hilarious bc i have to physically force my mouth to stop instinctively form the sounds of the filler, it really does just run on its own. nevertheless, generally the most common words in a person's second language are the ones that they will mix up the least. e.g.: when speaking english, someone is unlikely to mistranslate a standard expression like 'how's it going' since its so commonly used.

another very fun byproduct of having too many languages in your head is making a language test and just . blank empty stare at the paper bc you can only remember english words and the german ones Are Not Cooperating Today

anyways i have come in contact with way too many languages and i have a horrible memory so if you want a realistic multilingual experience, feel free to hmu i guess :P
