My two cents on how much of Mind!Varric is Rookâs mind trying to fill the blank space and how much is Solas actively talking through a convenient blood magic paper doll of the mind: I think it's a mix of both, a truly collaborative psychosocial horrorshow if you would, but waaaay more towards the second. It feels too directed and tactical at times to be anything else. Rook's mind is willing to go along with the denial phase as far as it can fucking carry them to not have to face the grief and regret and does its part in papering over details that donât make any sense, the way brains will strive to create coherent meaning even out of deeply confusing input, but to my understanding it's a collaborateur in how that plays out, not the instigator or control center. Solas is using it as a path to agency and to gather insight into Rook as a person unguarded as he can't count on in his own guise. (That stoic option that leads to him being like 'oh I see you're cautiously denying me access to your inner life. well. at least you still have Varric to talk to. y'know as an outlet :)'. You absolute BITCH Solas! That alone convinced me that he HAS to have an active hand in it on some level.)
My guess is that it takes considerable effort on Solasâ part to make Mind!Varric do anything more involved or complicated than seeming to sit up in bed and give casual commentary, and thatâs why he keeps having eerie five minute shallow pep talks with you before he announces he conveniently needs a nap aaanyway good luck kid you got this haha. When heâs just spouting NPC lines from his bedrest, Iâm ready to believe that could be Rookâs mind being allowed to improv lines for him more freely because itâs less about Solas trying to get something out of them or working an angle and more âStill here! Still totally alive and fine and the mentor figure you know and love and trust :) donât even worry about it! Thankfully there is no war in Ba Sing Sei, as we all knowâ upkeep work lol. Rookâs mind is allowed to set the tone of Varric, the outlines, but not always the content.Â
AND, on a (beautifully fucked up) character psychology level, I feel like Solas is indulging in actually getting to be the good supportive mentor figure to Rook with one hand to assuage the guilt he feels about what he's done -- and what he's going to do -- to them with the other. Same internal logic as he uses in Trespasser about the Qun. âAlmost everyone is going to die from the course of action Iâm doggedly pursuing eventually. But at least I can make their last years happier and freer and kinder than they would have been otherwise. and that kind of makes up for it right. a little bit. doesn't it. doesn't that make it better at least. I need that to make it better)'. Did I really take your beloved mentor and friend from you if you donât know yet that I did? Some philosophers would argue not really! So itâs probably almost ok actually. Isnât it even a little noble that Iâm taking all this grief and guilt on myself and shielding you for now. With undertones that Iâm not sure he would realize himself (and might be mortified by if he did) that he is so incredibly lonely, and even a dishonest and indirect emotional connection is more than nothing when youâre that desperate. In this setup he gets idk. Both the control he craves so incredibly badly in relationships and over himself, and the scraps, the fading afterimages, of intimacy and warmth and companionship, even second hand. The one thing Solas and Rook agree on deep deep down is that they really wish Varric weren't gone. They're handshake memeing this in the saddest and most creepy way possible.
I think an important element too is that Solas needs Rook and their team to *succeed* â up to a certain point. He needs someone to hold the two other elven mean girls off until he can get out of here. Ideally, in a perfect world, even do all the hard work of killing them so he can swoop in at the end and do his thing when both sides are exhausted and out of resources to stop him, and then Bobâs your uncle! Same logic as he was using with Corypheus, and after that worked out so well, too! King of choosing to never learn from a single solitary mistake heâs ever made even though i fully believe he could have the capacity to FenâHarel <3 The underlying idea isnât flawed, you see, it was just unforeseen circumstances getting in the way. This time for sure itâll all work out the way I cleverly imagined it in my head beforehand. Cue By Talos this canât be happening etc. in the form of a statue almost crushing him like a bug.Â
So he's providing guidance and forging Rook into a leader from two angles: one Rook might not trust, and one they probably will. Shaping them into what he needs slowly and carefully. Heâs helping you hone your team into their most effective state, as he might have done with his own agents back in the day, setting up his chess pieces even if he has to squint through two glimpsed realities to do it haha. Pincer maneuver of an insidious stealth mentor you never asked for. Also⌠at one point mind Varric gives you a whole little monologue about how Solas' problem is that heâs always seen his interpersonal connections as flaws and see where itâs landed him, all alone and the worst part? it hasnât even worked. itâs all been for nothing heâs back where he began with nothing to show for it but his mistakes. Like...that has such strong 'uh okay happy to play your therapist from two rooms away here what the fuck kind of traumadump is this' energy to me, Iâm not sure Rook like. Thinks that much about Solas as a private person. So much of Solas' self-loathing and futile insights into his own flaws seem to shine through in Mind!Varric's dialogue all the time â I just can't believe that there's no guiding hand behind it as it were.Â
Most of all. I feel like people underestimate the degree to which Solas is incredibly funny. As in, he has a very consistent and recognizable sense of humour. Itâs one of my very favourite things about him. We must remember â it is crucial that we always keep in mind â Orlesian accent and wig Solas from May The Dread Wolf Take You (my beloved, the explanation for why I love this dude even with the. All of the everything else. No one does it quite like him). He is not at all above doing things or adding little flourishes for his own obscure amusement, in fact that seems to me to be one of his most consistent traits. The Randy Dowager Quarterly comment Varric has? The âMaybe this is the Dread Wolfâs revenge. Forcing us to house sit for himâ thing? To Me this is 100% Solas amusing himself in his boring Fade jail surrounded by the screaming hellscape of all his regrets. Source: it came to me as divine revelation through pure vibes trust me broÂ
If nothing else I find it much more narratively interesting personally if the connection between Rook and Solas really is that defenselessly intimate and entwined (and so unbalanced!), and the sense of violation and invasion and betrayal afterwards consequently all the more nauseatingly intense. Even if you kept him at armâs length in the open, heâs been under your skin the whole time, looking around, gathering what he needs to destroy you, wearing the face of a friend. Regretfully, probably, but choosing to do it every step of the way anyway. (Sound familiar, Inquisitor? Solas doesnât have that many tricks when you actually look at it, he keeps returning to old tried and true ones like a dog with a bone haha.) Maybe he even genuinely meant some of it as mercy, which only makes it so much worse. It makes his sin against his own core principles of autonomy and the freedom of all beings in mind, spirit and body so much more juicily grave if itâs something he pursues actively and consistently, rather than it half-falling into his lap as a happy accident mainly orchestrated by Rookâs own subconscious. Solas, too, is at his very lowest point, the closest to giving in and becoming his own antithesis fully that heâs ever been, and it makes the choice of whether you still reach out your hand to him one last time or not all the more impactful and difficult.
#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#dragon age meta#solas#varric tethras#rook#I love what weeekes has managed to do with solas in this game honestly. both kinder and harsher reads on him?#completely supported by the text and completely valid. it really does come down to how you feel individually at the end of it all#there are good arguments to be made in every direction. sing o muse about a complicated man.#and also a motherfucker (affectionate *and* derogatory)#forgiveness isn't about him it's about you ultimately. do you find it in yourself or are there things that shouldn't be forgiven? up to you#he deserves both compassion and to be slam dunked straight into hell often with equal intensity. and i think that's beautiful#face in my hands. it keeps happening to me. I black out and I've written a whole thing and feel like I've been through a meat grinder#clearly my brain needs to Process things very badly but god I wish I could maybe control a bit more when and how intensely it does it lol#obligatory disclaimer that this is only my personal opinion and read on the game and characters involved etc. YMMV

âWhat? Did you imprint on me like a baby duck or something?â You joked, stretching and yawning.
âI donât know what ducks are nor the imprinting habits of their young, but yes.â
âYou donât really need to know what ducks are, but baby ducksâWait, what?!â Your brain finally processed the rest of Jungwooâs words, and you stared at him wide-eyed.
âHere, Y/N,â Johnny grinned at you as he pushed another seltzer into your hand. âYouâre a bit too sober, kid.â
âThanks, dude,â you beamed back, popping open the tab one-handed and taking your first swig.
All of your friends were gathered around a firepit on the beach, relaxing and celebrating another friendâs birthdayâTaeyong. Said birthday boy, a notorious lightweight, was already pink-cheeked and giggly as he chatted with some of the others. Someone had apparently given Doyoung access to the Spotify playlist for the night, as a ballad suddenly came over the Bluetooth speakers that had previously been playing upbeat tunes. A chorus of groans and jeers rose up around the fire from the other eight of you, while Doyoung loudly and passionately tried to defend himself.
âGive me the phone,â Johnny waved for Doyoung to hand over Jaehyunâs phoneâthe one connected to the speaker.
Doyoung clutched it protectively to his chest. âNo! You guys havenât let me play any of my songs tonight!â
âBecause they either make us cry or put us to sleep,â Yuta scoffed, lunging for the device, but the other man jerked it out of his reach.
âIf you two break my fucking phone, youâre buying me a new one and splitting the cost,â Jaehyun warned from where he was sat on the sand next to your feet, lazily leaning his head against your knee.
âSeriously, Doyoung, give him the phone,â Mark insisted.
Doyoung reluctantly handed the phone to Yuta, who passed it along to you, who firmly planted it in Johnnyâs waiting palm. âNone of you have any tasteââ
âI thought it was nice, Dââ Taeyong was cut off by a hiccup as he went to pat your friendâs head reassuringly. âIt was a nice song, DoyoungâŚâ
âThanks, Yonggie,â Doyoung rolled his eyes, but didnât shove him off as Taeyong drunkenly wrapped his limbs around him in what you were sure was supposed to be a comforting hug.
As Johnny went to put on more party-appropriate music and you took another sip of your seltzer, you looked up to the sky over the water. There werenât as many stars as you wouldâve liked, and it was a new moon, so there was no silvery light to come from there either. But it was still a nice night, the air was cool, the fire warm, you were the only ones on this stretch of beach this late at night and had enough alcohol to feed a medium-sized frat.
Then, one star started glowing even brighter than the others, and you realized it was moving across the sky. âLook, guys! A shooting star.â
âOoh, everybody make a wish!â Donghyuck chirped.
Feeling a bit silly, you closed your eyes and made your wish in your mind, then opened them again to see the shooting star getting bigger, as if it was heading towards you all.
âHey, are shooting stars supposed to do that?â You asked no one in particular.
âI⌠donât think so,â Yuta squinted at it suspiciously.
âShould we like⌠move?â Mark suggested hesitantly.
âTheyâre just meteors being burned up in the atmosphere,â Jaehyun shrugged. âMost donât ever reach Earth.â
Except it was very much getting closer and closer, hurtling even faster through the air than before.
âBut some do!â Jaehyun added, rushing to his feet. âI think we should go.â
As everybody started scrambling to pack their things, the meteor was making its final approach, and you could hear the sound of it splitting the air as it took a sudden nosedive towards shore. It finally struck with a cacophony of snapping palm trees and thunderous boom of its impact with the ground. It had thankfully missed all of you, but you could see smoke start rising out of the thick foliage where it did land. You all looked around at each other, mirrored faces of shock.
âWe survived,â Donghyuck breathed out, patting his front as if he didnât believe it. His blanket was sloppily thrown over one of his shoulders as he had one hand on the cooler.
âDude, you thought we were all going to die, and your first instinct was to save the drinks?â Mark pointed out in disbelief.
âIâm sorry, Mr. âWhereâs my phone?ââ Your other friend retorted back. âGoing to lecture me on the sanctity of human life when you were about to lose it all for your iPhone?â
As they kept squabbling, you tentatively stepped over the back of your log, towards the trees.
âY/N?â Johnny said your name questioningly.
âDonât you guys want to go see it?â You knocked back the rest of your seltzer. âA real-life meteor. Come on, we can all get a piece. Itâll be like, the coolest birthday party souvenir ever.â
Doyoung and Taeyong exchanged uneasy glances. Doyoung spoke up, âI donât know, that thing was hugeâŚâ
âWhat? You think it was a spaceship or something?â You snickered at the idea, pulling out your phone to turn the flashlight on. âCome on, anybody whoâs not a wimp. Weâll bring back enough pieces for the wimps.â
Yuta, Johnny, Jaehyun, and Donghyuck turned out to be the only ones who agreed to come with you. You led the way into the trees, following the slowly thinning smoke trail and path of destroyed palms. The impact site wasnât very far, and when you first caught a glimpse of the hulking size of its silhouette, you were so glad it had missed. A hundred meters or so over, and all of you would have been crushed by a giant space rock, which is certainly one thing to put on your headstone. Except, as all of your individual flashlight beams shone over it, and you got to see it piece by piece, you realized it was not a meteor. It was all smooth metal, matte chrome in varying colors. A vessel of some kind. From space. A spaceship.
âHoly shitâŚâ You breathed out.
âOh, we should get the fuck out of here,â Jaehyun said lowly.
âYeah, no way should first contact be made with our stupid, drunk asses,â Yuta agreed, starting to back up.
âY/N,â Johnny grabbed your arm to try to pull you back as well, but you stood rooted to the ground. âY/N, seriously, this is not the rabbit hole to jump down.â
âMaybe sheâs figured weâve gotten plenty of practice with aliens with Mark,â Donghyuck snickered.
You kept staring at the ship, listening to the metal creak and groan. Except those groans werenât all metallic.
âI think someoneâs in there!â You exclaimed, taking off towards it.
Johnny swore as your arm slipped from his grip, and you heard two pairs of footfalls chasing after you. Youâd just managed to get a hand and a foot on the ship before a strong pair of arms grabbed you by the waist and pulled you off of it.
âYuta, grab her hands before she claws me!â Johnny yelled from behind you.
As Yuta went to do that, you haphazardly threw out your feet that were now fully off the ground as Johnny lifted you up. You impacted with something on Yuta, who let out a long line of expletives, his hands dropping to grab something low on his own body. You blindly reached back for Johnny, grabbing a fistful of his hair with one hand and yanking hard, while the other reached under his arm to pinch a pressure point.
âFuck!â He dropped you. âYuta! You were supposed toââ
âShe kicked me in the balls, man!â Yuta groaned back.
Knowing that you didnât have long, you raced up the side of the ship. Banging on every panel that you passed by, you yelled out, âHello? Somebody in there? Are you okay? Hello?â
You finally got to the top-ish of the ship, and one of the panels there felt different than the others. Almost like glass. Pounding your fist against the side of that, hoping it was the cockpit or something, you shouted into it, âAre you okay in there?â
There was another groan that echoed from inside, and it definitely sounded like a person this time. Searching for some kind of emergency release from the outside, you felt around the edge of the whole glass panel. There was no release, but you found a part of the panel that it connected to on the outer hull that had a sizeable dent, big enough for you to get your hand under. Biting your phone in between your teeth to point the flashlight at the dent, you saw that it had exposed an inner latch of some kind.
The sounds of another body climbing up the ship came to your ears, and you whipped around to look at Johnny, already holding your hands up in a defensive fighting position. You took your phone from your mouth just to threaten, âI will bite.â
âI know. Letâs just get this over with before this thing explodes or something, okay?â He held his own hands up in surrender. When youâd relaxed from your fighting stance, he came over to squat down next to you. âSo, what are you thinking, kid? We need to bust that?â
âI think?â
âAlright, give me a second.â He hopped back down.
There was another low sound of pain from inside, and you bent closer to the gap as you addressed them, âJust hang in there! My friends and I are going to get you out, okay? Really soon!â
Johnny clambered back up, a large rock now in his hand. You moved out of the way for him to swing the more angled edge of the rock against the latching mechanism. After several swings, you heard a crack of metal, then he was tossing the stone aside. âJae!â Johnny called out, your other friend joining you two a few seconds later. They each grabbed a side of the glass panel, pushing and pulling it away from the hull.
âGuys?â Donghyuckâs voice suddenly floated up to you, but from the rear of the ship. âI think you should hurry up!â
âNo fucking shit!â Jaehyun yelled back, straining as him and Johnny continued battling with the ship.
âI mean, Iâm not a spaceship engineer or anything, but I donât think any of this should be on fire!â
âGod dammit!â Johnny groaned. âYuta!â
âYep! Recovered! Coming up!â Yuta joined the fray as well, and finally, you heard the last bit of metal holding the panel down snap and give way.
They all fell down as the glass dome now rose on its own, along with a hiss of air pressure. There were dozens of lights and screens inside, all flashing red, lighting up the figure of a man on one of the two seats there. His head was lolled back, arms hanging by his sides.
âChrist, there is someone in there,â Johnny exhaled in shock.
âA fuckinâ alien,â Yuta mimicked the sign of the cross over himself.
âWrong way, dumbass,â you scoffed, moving along the rim to get closer to the man inside. âYouâre not supposed to start on your shoulders.â
âOh, excuse me, didnât realize I was in the presence of the Pope herself.â
You shot him another glare as you kneeled down to hook your elbows under the strangerâs arms. âAnybody going to help me?â
âThe fireâs getting bigger!â Donghyuck yelled, fear pitching up his voice.
The other guys grabbed the manâs arms as well, helping you yank him up and out. He was all long, lanky limbs and dead weight, which your friends complained about to varying degrees of intensity. With a final tug, you pulled him out to the hull with you, his body flopping back onto you.
âSeriously! I canât read alien, but I think itâs spreading to the fuel tank or something!â Your friend on the ground shouted in a panic, running around to the side where you were. âGet off there!â
Just then, the spacemanâs eyes fluttered open, and he looked at you with concern, his lips parting for a moment.
âSorry, introductions later, your shipâs about to explode!â You said, jerking him over the side with you.
Donghyuck half-caught the two of you as you slid down the smooth exterior. Really, he just broke your landing a bit, the two of you still crashing into him at far too high of a speed to be painless, all your limbs smacking each other. The man from the ship made another groan of pain, as you and Donghyuck swore up a storm at your bitten tongues, clocked elbows, and cracked heads. The other three jumped down after you, Johnny and Jaehyun taking the stranger from your arms like they were carrying their drunk friend home from the bar. His feet dragged on the ground between them as the six of you hurried away from the ship. As you came crashing through the foliage again back to your campsite, your other friends all got to their feet to greet you.
âTook long enough!â Mark complained. âAlright, whereâs ourâHoly shit!â
âYou found some guy?â Doyoung asked, pointing to the stranger. âWhy does nothing ever go normal and fine when we let Yuta, Y/N, and Donghyuck go off together?â
Before any of you could explain, there was a loud boom from behind you, and you whipped around to see bright, glowing, molten sludge being shot into the air where you just had been. Fire lit up the trees, the night no longer feeling so cold suddenly.
âWhat was that?!â Taeyong rushed to your side, clinging onto you tightly.
âSpaceship,â Yuta pointed at the fireball. He then pointed at the stranger, âAlien.â
âSeriously?!â Markâs eyes were bugging out of his head. âLike, a real UFO? What did it look like?â
âI was too busy fearing for our lives to take pictures, sorry, Mark.â Donghyuck leaned his hands on his knees as he caught his breath.
Doyoung spoke up then, concerned look focused on the man from the ship. âUh, I think your alienâs dead.â
The spaceman was entirely slack in Johnny and Jaehyunâs grip, head hanging forward as dark droplets fell from his mouth onto the sand. You rushed over, instinctually putting two fingers to the side of his neck, where you guessed a jugular would be if he had one. Please, please, please let him have a heart, and let it be beating. He felt warm, at least, and while you couldnât find a pulse, you didnât know if that really meant anything. Instead, you held your fingers under his nose, relieved when you could feel a slight, repetitive exhale of breath.
âHeâs breathing!â You announced with relief. A drop of his blood fell onto your hand then, and as you jerked the limb back, not entirely sure what alien blood would do to you. The fleck caught the light of the bonfire and shone blue. A dark navy blue, so dark it almost appeared black at first.
âDefinitely an alienâŚâ Yuta crossed himself again.
âStop that!â You hissed, grabbing a half-drank bottle of water to pour the contents over your hand, washing off the alien blood. âYouâd burn up if you stepped foot in a church.â
âShould we take him to a hospital?â Doyoung asked.
âNo!â You cried out immediately. âTheyâd dissect him or something.â
âY/N, youâre not suggesting we keep him!â Johnny regarded with you wide, incredulous eyes.
âLike a pet alien?â Donghyuck added very helpfully.
âYouâre a doctor!â You argued with Johnny.
âA vet! An animal doctor! Iâm not even licensed to practice medicine on humans, I wouldnât know where to start on an alien!â
âExactly, you donât need a license to practice on him, heâs not human!â
âJohnny, we all know youâre going to say yes,â Jaehyun grunted, readjusting his hold on the passed-out spaceman. âCome on man, heâs getting heavy.â
âFine! Fine! I have my kit in my car,â Johnny relented with a big sigh.
âWe can take him to my place,â you immediately offered.
The distant sounds of sirens caught your attention, and you all immediately rushed to shut down the campsite. Someone doused the firepit while the speaker was shut off, and the drinks, towels, and blankets were hastily packed up. You all made a run for the cars parked up on the side of the road, as the sirens got even louder. You climbed into Johnnyâs backseat before he and Jaehyun pushed the stranger back there with you, then got into the front. The others loaded up into Doyoungâs van, and the two vehicles took off with roars of engines and squeals of tires. You pulled the manâs head up into your lap, wincing as you appraised the damage. His blue blood dripped from his mouth and a significant rip in his jacket on his side. He groaned in pain but didnât stir otherwise. Aside from the blue blood, he looked human⌠hopefully Johnny would be able to do something.
At your building, Johnny and Jaehyun helped you drag the spaceman up to your apartment on the third floor, and you had them deposit him on your bed. Johnny brought his travel vet kit up from the car, and together, you managed to get the shiny silver jacket off of him. Underneath, he had a fairly plain white top, which was also torn and blood-soaked. Johnny snapped on a pair of gloves before he pushed the hem up to appraise the strangerâs side, where there was a huge gash in his flesh.
âOh, Christ, okay,â Johnny sighed, inspecting the wound. âI guess Iâll disinfect and suture it up?â
âJust do it,â you mumbled, pressing a towel to the manâs sweat-sheened forehead.
âJaehyun, mind assisting?â
âYou do know the âDr.â I put in front of my name is just decorative, right? Itâs in Poetryââ
âAnd now you can brag to all your colleagues that youâve done real medicine like a real doctor,â Johnny snapped back. âDisinfectant, get it.â
With Jaehyun assisting him, Johnny made quick work of patching him up. Pressing the bandages down over the site so the adhesive would stick, Johnny then disposed of his navy-splattered gloves. He grabbed a stethoscope, putting the end up against the spacemanâs chest.
âI think heâs alive?â Johnny announced. âI donât know. If he is, he doesnât have a heart because Iâm not getting anything.â
He shifted the placement, presumably to listen to his breathing, and an even more bewildered look overtook his features. Sliding the stethoscope over to the right side of the manâs chest, he sat there for a moment, just listening.
âItâs on the other side,â he breathed out. âHis heartâs on the right side.â
âBut he has a heartbeat?â You clarified.
âYeah, he does. Faint, but itâs there. Heâs breathing, too. A bit shallow, but otherwise normal. I think.â
You let out a sigh of relief. âThank God.â
âI donât think thereâs anything else I can do until he wakes up. If he wakes up.â
âRight, thank you Johnny,â you smiled wearily your friend. âIâll call you when he wakes.â
Jaehyun and Johnny looked at each other skeptically. Jaehyun spoke up, âYouâre going to stay here alone with some rando we literally pulled out of a burning hunk of metal?â
âMy couch only fits one person. So unless you two are offering to sleep on the floor to protect me or whatever?â
âCall us if anything happens,â Johnny sighed, packing up all of his supplies.
âOf course,â you nodded. âThanks, guys.â
You heard the sound of your front door clicking shut as you stayed sitting on the edge of your mattress, wiping the spacemanâs face. He really did look human, two eyes that were now shut, lashes resting on his cheeks, a nose practically just like yours, with an elegant slope to the bridge, and a pair of plush, pouty lips. He let out a soft sigh, his head rolling over towards you. But then he went silent and still again. You finished cleaning up his face as best you could, then pulled the covers up over him. Readjusting his bangs that had been stuck together by the damp washcloth youâd used, you gave a final determined nod to nobody in particular before standing up. Grabbing a change of pajamas from your dresser, you got everything youâd need from in here for the night, then went to leave.
âAlrightâŚâ You stopped at the threshold of your bedroom, looking over the spacemanâs sleeping figure one last time. âGoodnight, I suppose.â
And with that, you turned the lights out, and quietly closed the door behind you. You were sure to leave it slightly ajar, though, just in case. After taking a much-needed shower and getting ready for bed in your bathroom, you headed out to the living room. You set up a few pillows and blankets into a comfy-enough makeshift bed, then tucked yourself in. Despite the exhaustion in your muscles, the excitement of the night hadnât worn off yet, and you laid awake for another hour just staring at your bedroom door.
Waking up in the morning to sunlight streaming in through your living room windows, you covered your eyes with a groan and rolled over to bury your face in the back cushions. The sound of your phone buzzing incessantly from the coffee table came, however, and with a guttural groan, you flopped back over to pick it up.
âYeah?â You mumbled, not even checking the caller ID.
âY/N?â It was Yuta on the other end.
âWho the fuck else would it be? You called me at whenever-the-fuck-in-the-morning.â
âSomeone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.â
âCouch,â you corrected him, swinging your feet over as you sat up properly. âI slept on the couch.â
âGave E.T. your bed? Such a kind hostess.â
The mention of your guest woke you up more. You got to your feet, shuffling towards the bedroom with a yawn. âYeah, you know me, Iâm a fuckinâ peach.â
âSo howâs theâŚâ Yuta dropped his voice to whisper into the phone, âAlien?â
The door hadnât moved since last night, and you cautiously pushed it open to peer inside. You could see the stranger exactly where you had left him, laying on his back under your blankets, chest shallowly rising up and down. Pushing further into the room, you hesitated on whether to try to find a pulse again. You settled for trying once around his wrist, and if it didnât work, then youâd just have to assume he was fine. Surprisingly, you found his pulse in one go, and it felt steady.
âFine, I think,â you answered Yuta quietly, walking back over towards your door. âHeâs breathing, he has a heartbeat. Heâs just not⌠ambulatory.â
âStill passed out cold?â
âYeah.â
âImagine if he was in one of those comas that you donât wake up from, and we just had to deal with this comatose alien.â
âStop, youâre going to manifest that or something!â You hissed.
âNot manifesting, just joking.â
âYouâre hilarious.â
âAnyway, some of us went back to the beach this morning, because Mark really wanted to see the UFOââ
âDonât touch anything!â
âWe couldnât. The whole place is locked down. Couldnât even park on the shoulder, it was swarming with cops. They were still putting out the fire.â
âDo you think any of the ship survived?â
âI have no clue. Doyoung said heâd ask his dad about it.â Doyoungâs dad was the fire chief, making your participation in the conflagration last night even more dicey.
âTell him to call me as soon as he finds out anything.â
âI think he was already planning on that, but Iâll make sure he knows.â
âGood. Also, Iâm sorry for kicking you inâŚâ You trailed off as you turned around to see two big brown eyes staring at you from your bed. âIâve got to go, Yuta. Iâll call you back.â
âWhatâs hapââ You hung up.
The spaceman was looking around the room warily, regarding you with clear suspicion.
âHeyâŚâ You offered him a smile as you kept your tone of voice soothing and calm. âYouâre alright. Iâm not going to do anything to you. My nameâs Y/N.â
He kept staring blankly at you, and you were starting to fear that he wouldnât be able to understand you at all.
âYou got injured, last night. On your side.â
He pulled up the hem of his shirt, looking at it himself. He tentatively touched the bandages, but didnât rip them off. There was a small dot of dark blue that had soaked through.
âIâm going to call my friend, to look at it, okay?â
He nodded.
Quickly dialing Johnnyâs number, you chewed on your thumbnail anxiously at how long it was taking him to pick up. Finally, the ringing stopped, and a confused groan came from the other end.
âHey, Johnny,â you greeted him, relieved. Johnny made another inquisitive sound. âYeah, heâs awake.â
You could heard Johnny make a few more noises of exertion, presumably sitting up in bed. After a yawn, sniffle, and cough (which he thankfully pointed his mic away from), he said real words. âHas he⌠said anything?â Your friend questioned. âCan you even understand each other?â
âNo, heâs not exactly talking⌠Just sort of nodding. So I think he can understand me at least.â
âAlrightâgood LordâIâll be over in like, thirty.â
âThat long?!â
âYou woke me up! I need to brush my teeth and shit. Make that forty-five, I still reek of alcohol.â
âFine. Hey, can you bring some clothes for him, too?â
âWhat?!â
âI donât have anything thatâll fit him. You guys are about the same size. Or steal some of Jaeâs, I donât care.â
âYeah, Iâm taking Jaehyunâs. I think theyâre a bit closer in size.â
âYou donât want an alien to wear your clothes.â
âExcuse me for feeling weird about that! What if he bleeds on them? Iâd have to burn them!â
âSo youâre volunteering your roommateâs clothes instead.â
âWellââ
âJust get over here, John.â
âWill do. See you, kid.â
âSee you.â You hung up. Turning back to the alien, you announced, âMy friend will be here soon. Heâs just going to look you over. Are you okay? Like, does anything hurt?â
He stared at you.
âRight, those were two different questions.â You shook your head at yourself. âDo you feel any pain? Anywhere?â
He indicated to the wound on his side.
âMakes sense, you got sliced open by something there. Anything else?â
He held his hands out, and you saw that his left wrist was slightly puffier and swollen than the other.
âOh, looks like you⌠sprained your wrist?â You said tentatively. You had no clue how his joints worked or if they could even get sprained like yours, but thatâs definitely what it looked like.
He nodded.
âJohnny should have something for that,â you assured him. After a few beats of silence, you tried introductions again. âIâm Y/N. I know I already said that, but uh, itâd be nice to know your name, too? Iâm pretty sure you can understand me, since youâve been answering my questions, mostly. Soââ
âDid you capture me, then?â He finally spoke, his voice clear but uncertain.
âWhat? No,â you laughed, completely caught off-guard by the question. âYouâre free to go anytime you want. Your ship crashed, and my friends and I found you. I just want to help, but if you want to go right now, I wonât stop you.â
âThis is⌠not a human hospital?â
âNo, itâs not,â you chuckled again. âItâs my bedroom. We uh, we werenât sure if we should take you to a hospital or not. Didnât want them taking x-rays of you and finding out you had two hearts or something.â
âJust the one.â
âYes, and itâs on the right side of your chest, right?â
He stared at you with mild alarm.
âJohnny was listening to your heart last night. Had a difficult time finding it.â You tapped the left side of your chest, right above your own heart. âOurs is usually over here.â
He licked his lips, eyes flitting around before they landed on you again, and he finally said, âMy nameâs Jungwoo.â
âJungwoo?â You echoed slowly, making sure you were pronouncing it correctly.
âYes.â
âIf youâre from space, why is your name⌠Korean?â
âItâs not. It canât be pronounced by humans. Youâre missing a flap.â He gestured to his throat. âI suppose thatâs the closest approximation that it could get.â
âIt?â
âMy transcoder.â He picked up the pendant hanging around his neck, a simple rhombus of flat gold metal. âItâs a translation device. Thatâs why we can understand each other right now. Thankfully, it didnât get busted in the crash. I donât speak human.â
âWe donât all speak one language, you know? We have thousands.â
âWait, really?â
âDoes your whole planet speak one language? Speaking of, where are you from?â
âIâm from far outside this galaxy. Iâm not sure telling you the name of my planet would be any help.â
âItâd be interesting.â
âGalaria.â
âSo youâre⌠Galarian?â
âGalarii.â
âAh, I was close. Never was good at conjugation in grammar class.â
âAll Galarii speak the same language, to answer your question. We have some regional dialects, but all of us can understand each other. How does your planet hold conversations, come to agreements about policy or run the government at all?â
âWe donât have one government system for the whole planet, so usually we donât need to. Everybody who lives near each other tend to speak the same language.â
His brow furrowed and his lips pulled down into a slight frown. âThen you must all be so⌠separated.â
You sat down on the corner of your bed in front of him, hoping this was still a polite, conversational distance for Galarii. âI donât think itâs so bad. People can always learn more than one language if they want, learn about other cultures.â
âHow do people from those different cultures even understand each other, though? You seemed confused about my transcoder, Iâm guessing you donât have anything similar here.â
âTranslators. People who learn more than one language and interpret between people who donât speak the same language. Not to mention computer programs will usually get you the gist of something if youâre in a hurry or donât have access to a more authentic source.â
âHow many governments do you have, then? Two? Three?â
You burst into laughter at the idea. âSorry, sorry, Iâm not laughing at you. Itâs just⌠well, to spare you from any degree of human politics, letâs say thereâs a debate about how many countries we even have, but people usually say about 200.â
âTwo hundred?! How do you get anything done?â
âVery slowly,â you snickered, hiking a leg up onto the side of the bed to get comfier. âSo, how does your transcoder work, exactly? Like, how is it getting in my brain? Because watching you talk, it looks like youâre saying the words Iâm hearing, but you canât be.â
âLow-level, short-range telepathic wave.â
âTelepathic?!â
âIâm not sure what word itâs picking to translate, but you seem very shocked.â
âFor us, telepathy is magic. Itâs a superpower, itâs not real.â
âI can assure you, this all has very sound science behind it. Though Iâm more of a pilot than a neuroscientist, so I canât really explain it...â
âReally good pilot, too. Spectacular landing,â you joked, crossing your fingers that Galarii understood sarcasm.
He seemed to, as he let out a cynical chuckle. âNot my finest work.â
âSo what happened that made you crash in the first place?â
âPolitical assassination.â
âExcuse me?!â
âAttempted murder?â Jungwoo tried another phrase, looking down at his transcoder as if inspecting it for damage.
âAm I harboring a space fugitive right now?â
âNo, Iâm not on the run from anywhere. I was taking a joyride when suddenly the engines began failing. I presume it was meant to look like an accident. Iâll know more after I can inspect my ship.â
âOoh, about that,â you winced.
âWhat?â
âWell, it exploded, for one.â
âYes, thatâs what I figured when you told me âyour ship is about to explodeâ and then I heard an explosion.â
âSo you remember some of last night!â You pointed victoriously.
âSome,â he agreed mildly. âIn a couple brief bouts of consciousness I had.â
âSo, yeah, it exploded, and the explosion and resulting fire drew in a lot of attention. A couple of my friends drove by this morning and the whole place is swarmed with firemen and cops still.â
âIâll just tell them itâs my ship.â
âNo.â
âThey should release it to the proper owner, what would the problem be?â
âYou crashed here from space in a certifiable UFO. If you walked up and say that itâs yours, if they believe you, theyâd probably ship you off for dissection, shoot you on the spot, or kill you then ship you off for dissection.â
âThatâs not very polite.â
âSorry, we donât really get a lot of alien visitors. Or any, that Iâm aware of.â
âVery well,â Jungwoo sighed, looking down at his lap dejectedly.
âSo weâll have to sneak in at night.â
âWhat?â
âIf you want to inspect your ship, weâll have to sneak in after everybody leaves for the night. And, after theyâve put out the fires.â
âYouâre suggesting breaking the law?â
âDo you have a problem with that? Itâs just light trespassing, and onto a ship thatâs yours anyway.â
âNo, I donât have a problem with that.â Jungwooâs face finally cracked into a smile. âJust clarifying.â
âSo⌠who are you?â
âIâve told you my name and species.â
âI meant, who are you on your planet? To have somebody trying to assassinate you. Here, usually people that get assassinated are like, politicians, rulers, activists, sometimes celebrities. Ooh, Iâve got it! Youâre a pop star or something!â
âNo, Iâm not a⌠musician.â The way he said the word made you think the transcoder must have had a hard time finding an equivalent word in his language.
âActor?â
âIâm not a celebrity. Well, not how youâre suggesting, I believe.â
âOkay, because youâve got the look.â
âLook? How am I looking at you?â
âNo, I mean youâre really pretty.â You gestured vaguely to his face. âYouâd fit right in on a red carpet here.â
âI think I will interpret that as a compliment.â
âMaybe,â you grinned and shrugged. âSo? What are you? If youâre not a celebrity, why did someone try to kill you?â
âThey werenât trying to kill me.â
âWho were they trying to kill?â
âMy brother, presumably,â he said as if this were the most obvious, natural thing in the world.
You raised an eyebrow. âYou sound unperturbed by this.â
âReally, this is what I get for stealing his ship.â
âSo you are a thief.â
âWith permission.â
âThen itâs not stealing.â
âJust like you didnât want to bore me with Earth politics, I wonât bore you with mine, but letâs say my brotherâs very powerful and very controversial,â Jungwoo explained. âHe asked that I take his ship and publicly leave the planet on it.â
âSo everybody would think he left.â
âYes.â
âWhy?â
âSo he could get some paperwork done.â
âWhat exactly makes him so controversial?â
âNone of his policies, really. But people donât like some choices heâs made in his personal life.â
âSounds familiar,â you mused, thinking of a few figures on Earth like that as well. âHow long was your joyride supposed to take?â
âA few days.â
âAre Galaria days similar to Earth days?â
âI⌠am not sure.â
âCool. So whatâs going to happen if you donât come back on time?â
âIt wouldnât be the first time Iâve run away,â he admitted. âThough he will be pissed that I diverted from the plan.â
âWell, hopefully we can get you back without getting in too much trouble with him,â you offered him a reassuring smile.
âWe?â
âIâm not an engineer or anything, but Iâll help you however I can. Even if itâs just holding the flashlight.â
Jungwoo regarded you not with suspicion, but more-so fascination, like he wanted to put you under a microscope. âI take it not all humans are this helpful.â
âI like to think we all want to do good, but it might look different for different people. And some of us havenât practiced doing good since we were taught to share as kids.â
âWell, thank you, Y/N. I suppose if weâre going to be sneaking in at night, I will need somebody to hold the flashlight.â
âIâm your girl,â you beamed, right as your doorbell rang, accompanied by a solid knock. âThatâll be Johnny. Wait here.â
âJohnny!â You opened your door, head tilting curiously at the extra figures that accompanied him. âAnd Mark and Donghyuck. What are you guys doing here?â
âWellââ Mark started.
âWe want to see the alien, duh,â Donghyuck pushed past you.
You crossed your arms over your chest. âHeâs not a freakshow here for your entertainment.â
âAlright, Ms. High-and-Mighty, excuse us for having natural human curiosity,â Donghyuck scoffed, looked around your living room as if you were hiding him somewhere.
âLet Johnny look him over first, then I will ask Jungwoo if he wants to meet you.â
âSweet!â âYes!â They high-fived each other.
âJungwoo?â Johnny repeated with a suspicious eyebrow raised. âHis nameâs not like âGorglukâ or something?â
âIt could be, for all I know,â you admitted with a shrug. âAccording to him, weâhumansâdonât have the right⌠throat flaps to say his actual name. Thatâs the closest approximation his translating device could make, apparently.â
âRight. Cool. Alien named Jungwoo. We going to meet his brother Steve next?â
âYouâre not funny.â
âIâm coping.â
Leading Johnny back down the hall, you gently knocked on your bedroom door as you pushed it open. âHey, Jungwoo, Iâm back.â
Jungwoo was right where youâd left him, sitting up in your bed, hands folded over his lap patiently. You saw him stiffen slightly when his eyes moved from you to Johnny as the taller man followed you into the room.
âJungwoo, this is my friend Johnny. Johnny, this is Jungwoo,â you quietly introduced them.
âHey,â Johnny nodded to him casually.
âI told you Johnny was going to check you out, remember?â
Jungwoo nodded.
âDoes he talk?â Your friend looked at you with a skeptical eyebrow raised.
âYeah, heâs just shy, or something,â you muttered, walking over to the bedside with Johnny.
Johnny pulled out his stethoscope first, awkwardly listening to the right side of Jungwooâs chest, then motioned for him to lean forward to listen to his lungs from the back. Once heâd taken the stethoscope out of his ears, Jungwoo spoke.
âYouâre a doctor?â The spaceman asked, watching as Johnny opened his kit again to put the tool away.
âVet.â Johnny answered bluntly, pulling on a pair of latex gloves.
âVet?â
âVeterinarian. I am a doctor, but my patients are usually on four legs.â
Jungwoo looked up at you in bewilderment. âThere are four-legged humans?â
âAnimals. I treat animals.â
âJohnnyâs really good,â you assured him. âHeâs the one that stitched you up.â
âSpeaking ofââ Johnny gestured to his side. âYou mind?â
Jungwoo wordlessly pulled his shirt up to allow Johnny to inspect the wound.
âIâm going to change the dressings,â the vet declared, beginning to peel the bandage off.
To your disbelief, the wound was half the size as before, and looked almost healed up. The amount of blood on the gauze indicated much more damage than you were seeing.
âWhat the shit?â Johnny swore under his breath.
âJungwoo, howâs your wrist?â You asked with wide eyes.
He lifted his left hand up, bending and flexing it with no visible reaction. It was a typical size again. âFrom your reactions, I take it humans heal at much slower rates?â
âUh, yeah,â you gulped, still staring at the wound on his side in awe. âIt would take us days to heal as much as you have.â
âI-I donât think I need to change the dressing,â Johnny said, his face completely betraying how weirded out he was by what he was looking at. âThereâs no blood or any other⌠fluids coming out of it. Itâs entirely scabbed over, nothing should be getting in there. I can put a band-aid on it so the scab doesnât catch on any clothes, I guess?â
âDo you have any morphine?â Jungwoo requested.
âIt canât hurt that much, it just looks like you bumped a countertop too hard.â
âI think my rib is broken.â
âWhat?!â
You looked at him incredulously. âWhy didnât you say anything before?â
âMy skin heals quicker than internal parts. It should be fine in a few days, but it does hurt quite a bit now.â
Johnny looked to you for any sort of cue, at the same time that you looked at him for the same. He presumably thought you knew more about aliens than him, and you were seeking his medical opinion.
âCan you have morphine?â Johnny asked him slowly. âLike, is it compatible with your biology, or whatever?â
âVery much. My body naturally produces some, but Iâm afraid the concentration of hydrogen in your atmosphere is inadequate for this level of injury.â Jungwoo looked the two of you over with confusion. âWhy are you so hesitant to give me it?â
âWell, itâs sort of⌠addictive,â you tried to explain. âDoctors tend to try other stuff before jumping for the opioids.â
âMy body must process it differently. Weâve never seen opioid addiction on my planet.â
You and Johnny met eyes again before Johnny reached back into his kit. He pulled out a small bottle and syringe. As soon as he took the cap off the needle, Jungwooâs eyes went wide. âAnd what are you going to do with that?â
âInject you?â Johnny replied, bewildered. âUnless you were planning on drinking it?â
âYou donât?â
âNo! And Iâm not going to let you!â Johnny was clearly at his wits end. âEither I stick you, or you donât get any.â
âOkay, guys,â you jumped in, uncomfortable with the rising tension. Able to realize when Johnny was at his limit, you turned to Jungwoo. âWill it harm you if you get injected with it instead of drinking it?â
âNo, but I would prefer not to,â Jungwoo admitted.
âAlien with trypanophobia?â Johnny scoffed.
At the returned stiffness in Jungwooâs muscles, you looked at him sympathetically. âIs that it, Jungwoo? Youâre afraid of needles?â
âIâm not afraid of them, he has one and Iâm not running from the roomââ
âBut you donât like them being used on you.â
âY/N, I have a job,â Johnny sighed, checking his watch. âI canât do this song and dance with him all day.â
âJungwoo, are you going to let him inject you? Like I said, doctors avoid giving opiates out, weâre not going to be able to get you any from anywhere else.â
âY/N will hold your hand, will that help?â Your human friend offered tersely.
âJohnny, donât patronize him.â
âVery well,â Jungwoo cut Johnny off right as he had opened his mouth to respond to you. âThat⌠is an agreeable compromise.â
Johnny gestured at him while staring you down very pointedly. Not having the energy in you to go back and forth with either of them anymore, you sat down at the head of the bed by Jungwoo and offered your hand out to him. His skin was surprisingly warm as he laid his hand atop yours, and you curled your hand around it, then put your other one on top, giving him a gentle pat and small smile that you hoped looked reassuring.
Jungwoo didnât look at Johnny as he went back to preparing the injection, instead keeping his eyes trained on you. âI⌠didnât realize that humans are so cold.â
âJust me,â you told him, squeezing his hand. âCold hands. Youâre about as warm as other humans Iâve met. My friend Jae is like a human space heater. Hates when I put my cold toes on him during movie night.â
Jungwoo opened his mouth to reply, but his face suddenly scrunched up. Johnny must have put the needle in. The alien squinted one eye open as he continued whatever he had been going to say in the first place. âI donât mind how cold you are.â
âDone,â Johnny declared, quite literally slapping a band-aid over where he had just injected. âAnd Iâm going to work.â
âTaking the other two with you?â You asked hopefully.
âYou promised them an alien.â
âI promised I would ask. Theyâre not entitled to see him.â
âWhatever, Iâve got to go.â Johnny packed everything up quickly. He gave your hair a quick ruffle. âBye, kid.â
âBye, Johnny.â You watched him head for the bedroom door.
âThank you,â Jungwoo called out to him.
The vet gave a final nod to both of you before slipping back out. You heard a sudden swell of noise as the two younger boys accosted him.
âWho else is here?â Jungwoo asked you.
You bit your lip ruefully as you heard the front door open and close, but the voices of Mark and Donghyuck were still very much audible. âTwo more of our friends, Donghyuck and Mark. They were at the beach last night, too, when we found you. They want to meet you, if thatâs okay with you. I totally get it if you say no. Iâll be more than happy to kick them out.â
âNo, thatâs alright. I would like to meet them. Theyâre your friends, right?â
âI guess I did say that,â you sighed, letting go of his hand and standing up. âOkay, be back.â
Out in your living room, the two younger boys practically assaulted you in their excited states, clinging onto your arms desperately.
âDonât throw us out! Weâll be so good!â Donghyuck pleaded.
âJohnny told us he talks and stuff?!â Mark was buzzing.
âCool it,â you chastised them. âHe said he wants to meet you. Donât make me regret this.â
âFuck yeah!â They fistbumped.
âYou two are so lame. Come on.â You stalked back over to your room. Jungwoo perked up when you came back in, regarding the two newcomers studiously.
âJungwoo, this is Mark and Donghyuck,â you gestured to each in turn. âGuys, this is Jungwoo.â
âItâs nice to meetââ Markâs polite greeting was cut off by Donghyuck.
âSo are you from Mars? Jupiter?â
You slapped a hand over your face with a low groan. Jungwoo almost looked amused, thankfully. âNo, Iâm not from this Solar System. Or galaxy, for that matter.â
âHow can you breathe our air?â Mark asked curiously.
âWe have a similar composition on my home planet. Though thereâs not as much free hydrogen hereâŚâ
âOh!â You suddenly had an epiphany. âThe hydrogen. Will water work? Uhm, dihydrogen monoxide?â
âYes, that will be an apt replacement.â
âIâll go get you a glass,â you patted his shoulder before hurrying from the room. The others were still talking as you filled up a cup of water, then walked back in with it. You held it out to Jungwoo. âHere.â
âThank you, Y/N.â
âSo what do you eat?â Donghyuck questioned. âCan you eat our food?â
âI quite like uhm, confections. Desserts.â
âAlien with a sweet toothâŚâ
âYou all keep calling me that. You do realize that to me, you are the aliens?â
âWoahâŚâ Mark breathed out. âYouâre right.â
Jungwoo quickly chugged down the glass of water, and you took it back. âIâll get you another,â you smiled down at him.
Donghyuck perked up, âOh, Y/N, can I have aââ
âYou know where the kitchen is,â you snorted, heading for the door. âIâm not your mom.â
When you returned and handed the cup to Jungwoo again, Mark eyed you with a pout and arms crossed over his chest. âYouâre never this nice to us when we get hurt.â
âYeah, you laughed in Yutaâs face when he broke his leg last year,â Donghyuck narrowed his eyes.
âBecause he broke his leg trying to grind an ollie at the skate park at his big age,â you scoffed. âAnd then had to go into his grown-up job the next day. Tell me how that isnât funny.â
They exchanged a glance before breaking out into snickers.
âOkay, that is pretty funny,â Donghyuck admitted.
âExactly.â You glanced at the time on your phone. âAlright, Iâm tired of human interaction, you two need to go.â
âButââ Mark gestured wildly to Jungwoo, who was calmly sipping his water.
âMy apartment, my rules,â you clicked your tongue, shooing them towards the front door.
âJohnny brought us here, how are we going to get home?â Donghyuck tried to plead with you as you shoved them through your apartment.
âYou have bus passes, donât you?â
âWell yeahââ
âThen, bye!â You opened your door and pushed them out, slamming the door shut behind them. Turning back around, you noticed a stack of clothes on the arm of your couch, and recognized them as some of Jaehyunâs. You grabbed them and took them back with you into your bedroom.
âUgh, finally,â you sighed, rolling out your neck. âSorry about them.â
âThey were⌠funny,â Jungwoo settled on an adjective.
You offered out the clothes to your guest. âHere, Johnny brought these for you. My shower is through there, too.â You gestured to your bathroom door. âAnd I can make something to eat while you freshen up. If youâre hungry. What do you eat? Other than sweet stuff? I donât have any meat, but I can go get some if you need itââ
âWe donât eat meat, either,â he smiled up at you. âGalarii donât.â
âVegetarians?â
âYes.â
âWell, easy for me, then.â You watched him as he swung his legs around. âYou got it? You need any help?â
Jungwoo slowly got to his feet, and you winced as you watched him clutch at his side. Nevertheless, he stayed upright, and took a couple steps forward. âIâll be alright.â
âGreat. Uhm, let me just show you how the shower works and stuff, then Iâll leave you be.â You walked him into the bathroom, pushed back the shower curtain, pointing out the knobs and bottles to Jungwoo. âThis oneâs for cold water, this oneâs for hot water. You have to turn them left to turn them on. Pull this thing up to turn the shower part on instead of the bath. This blue bottle is for shampoo, you do that one first, just on the roots of your hair. Purple one is conditioner, on your ends. Face wash, body wash. Yeah, I think thatâs it.â
As you turned back to look at Jungwoo, you realized how close he was as he had leaned in to listen intently to you point out everything. Squinting, you looked closer at a faint smattering of freckles across his cheeks and nose that you hadnât noticed before. âHey, I never realized you have freckles,â you commented, blinking a couple times to make sure you were seeing this right. âOr that they were⌠rainbow? No, just pink? And purple?â
âTheyâre not freckles.â He touched them as if he were wiping them away, but they didnât budge. âTheyâre iridophores, patches of cells that reflect light differently. I believe the fluorescents in here are making them more visible than the dim lighting in the other room.â
âTheyâre so pretty!â You exclaimed, shifting in another direction so that they were even flashier at this angle, revealing some blue and green as well.
Jungwooâs hand hovered uncertainly over his face. âYou think so?â
âYeah, of course! What? You donât?â
âTheyâre⌠I donât know, theyâre nothing special on Galaria,â he admitted, dropping his hand to give you a full view of the iridophores. He pulled the collar of his shirt to the side to show some of the top of his shoulder, where there were even more, then let it go. âI have them here too. Everyone does.â
âWell, we donât have stuff like that here,â you informed him with an awestruck grin. âAnyway, Iâll let you shower, sorry. Youâre not some specimen for me to gawk at.â
âNo, itâs alright. I donât mind you being curious about me.â
You werenât sure what to say to that, so you gave him a nod and another smile before leaving the bathroom and heading into the kitchen.
By the time Jungwoo was done with his shower, you had made a couple hefty stacks of pancakes, cut up some fruit, and grabbed a jar of Nutella for good measure, remembering his comment about preferring sweets. You filled up two tall glasses of ice water before also making a cup of tea for yourself. You briefly contemplated running to the boba place around the corner, but it was exactly then that you heard the shower turn off, and thought better of it. Jungwoo emerged in a pair of Jaehyunâs jeans and a slouchy, grey crewneck sweater, looking startlingly human, except for the occasional glint of iridophores on his cheeks and nose. His hair was still a bit damp as he came over to curiously inspect the two plates you had placed on your kitchen counter.
âPancakes and fruit. Grab a plate and sit wherever, I donât have a table. I usually eat at the couch.â You gestured. Jungwoo followed your lead and sat in the corner of your couch as you plopped down in your armchair. You cracked open your jar of Nutella, offering it out to him.
âWhat is that?â He questioned, sniffing the air tentatively.
âChocolate hazelnut spread,â you stuck a spoon in it. âItâs sweet. Youâll probably like it. Most people do.â
He put some on a small part of a pancake, and tried a bite, then immediately dove back in to slather the rest of his pancakes in it.
âAlien with a sweet tooth,â you chuckled to yourself, digging into your own breakfast.
âYou donât have to⌠stay with me,â Jungwoo told you between bites. âI remember you telling your friends that you were tired of human interaction. I believe that itâs a common human social nicety to entertain house guests, but you wonât offend me if you wish to be alone.â
âThatâs⌠considerate,â you chuckled. âBut the operative word there is human. Youâre an alien, so Iâm not tired of you yet, Jungwoo.â
âReally?â
âYep,â you grinned at him, popping a piece of fruit in your mouth.
âMay I ask⌠Why am I staying with you?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âFrom what Mark and Donghyuck were saying, it sounds like there were many of your friends there last night when my ship crashed. How did it happen that I ended up here with you?â
âFinders keepers, I guess,â you laughed. Jungwoo gave you a funny sort of look at that, which prompted you to further explain. âIâm the one who found your ship in the first place and wanted to look inside at all. I donât know how much you remember, but Iâm kind of the one who pulled you out. Some of the other guys helped me, donât get me wrong, but if they had their way, you wouldâve been left in there. So, I found you, youâre my responsibility. Finders keepers.â
âAh, I see.â
Your phone buzzed then, and you saw that it was Doyoung calling. âOh, thatâs Doyoung, Iâve got to take this. Sorry, hold on.â Standing up, you didnât go very far as you walked over to the living room window to look out over the city as you answered. âHi, Doie, whatâs up?â
âY/N, hey. Howâs your alien?â Your friend asked.
âFine, all things considering.â
âHe alive?â
âAlive, awake, eating, talking, the whole shebang.â
âShit, really?!â
âUh-huh,â you confirmed, holding your phone mic-out towards Jungwoo, âJungwoo, say hi to Doyoung?â
Jungwoo covered his mouth as he quickly chewed and swallowed, then called out, âHello, Doyoung!â
You brought your phone back up to your ear just in time to hear your friend react. âHoly shit!â
âSo whatâd you find out from your dad? How much of the ship survived?â
âA lot,â he told you. âTheyâre calling it a hoax, and theyâre not letting news reporters get footage. Apparently they donât want to encourage any copycats. After putting out the fire, they havenât let anybody on board. Theyâre just keeping it cordoned off until the police chief and my dad decide what to do with it. Right now itâs a crime scene while they investigate it as an arson case.â
âBut the fireâs been put out, right?â
âYeah.â
âDo you know anything about how itâs being watched?â
âA couple cops at night, I think.â Doyoungâs voice was guarded. âYouâre going to sneak the alien back there, arenât you?â
âHe has to get home somehow, Doyoung,â you insisted. âUnless you think we should steal a spaceship from somewhere else thatâs fit for intergalactic travel?â
âHey, Iâm not disagreeing with the whole âget the alien back homeâ idea,â he said defensively. âJust donât get arrested while youâre at it, alright? Johnny would have a stroke.â
âYeah, I know, he nearly had one last night and this morning playing alien doctor,â you sighed. âI donât think heâd bail me and Jungwoo out of jail if it came to it.â
âCall Yuta for your one phone call if you need. Heâs good for it.â
âYeah, thatâs what I was thinking. Or Taeyong, he probably wouldnât hold it over my head.â
âGood point. Or, even betterâdonât get arrested in the first place.â
âPlan A: Donât get arrested. Plan B: Taeyong. Plan C: Yuta. Plan D: You. Plan E: Jaehyun, who would definitely bring Johnny with him.â
âSounds like youâve got it all figured out,â Doyoung chuckled. âIâll leave you and Spock to it then.â
âHe has a name, you know.â
âYeah, but I donât have all the right flaps, right?â
âWho told you? Donghyuck? Mark?â
âJohnny. He called on the way to work to ask if I knew anything about the ship.â
âHuhâŚâ
âAnyway, Iâll leave you and Stitch be. Holler if you need something.â
âYouâre hilarious. Youâre fucking hilarious,â you rolled your eyes, hanging up. Plopping back down in your armchair, you relayed the pertinent parts of your conversation to Jungwoo. âAccording to Doyoung, a lot of your ship survived the explosion. Theyâve put the fire out, but there will probably be a couple cops patrolling it at night, so weâll have to be careful when we go check it out tonight. Until then, I guess weâll just hang out. Sound good? How are you feeling? Howâs your side? Do you need more bandages after showering? I can call Johnny up, probably swing by his office and get some more or see if he can come by on his lunch and take a look at you? Maybe bring some more morphine?â
âI donât need any more bandages,â Jungwoo shook his hand, lifting the sweatshirt to allow you to see how heâs healed so far. There was still a considerable amount of bruising, but the skin had entirely mended itself, no evidence of a scab, only a dark, puffy scar.
âDoes it still hurt?â You asked with a sympathetic grimace. âI know you said you take longer to heal internally than on the outside. I can probably convince him to bring some more morphine for you. I donât know what your metabolism is like compared to ours, or even how much he gave you last time. I mean, are you in pain?â
âIt is painful,â he admitted, dropping his shirt again. âBut I donâtâIâll be fine.â
âJungwoo, if it hurtsââ
âNot that bad.â
You felt a bit mean for this, but you reached out to poke his side, and he immediately let out a yelp, covering his wound and ducking away from you.
âWhat did you do that for?â He asked you, jaw dropped.
âYou liar,â you scoffed, bringing your phone out. âIâm texting Johnny.â
âHe will administer it the same way as last time, wonât he?â Jungwoo questioned quietly, stopping your typing.
You put your phone down. âProbably, yeah. Heâs not⌠used to letting people drink that stuff.â
âThen I will be fine without it.â
âEven if I hold your hand again? You canât do another one?â You asked. âIâll talk to you, you can squeeze my hand like a stress ballâor weâll get you a real stress ball, whatever you want.â
He was silent, and you let out a sigh.
âJungwoo, I donât like seeing you hurt, you know,â you shook your head, cutting off a piece of your pancakes with the side of your fork, lifting it to your mouth. âBut itâs up to you, Iâm not going to hold you down and make him stick you or anything.â
With a flash of iridophores, Jungwooâs head turned, and his eyes were focused back on you, his hands wringing together. âIâll do it.â
Your jaw stopped mid-bite. âWait, seriously?â
âYes. If Johnny agrees. I get the impression he doesnât like me very muchâŚâ
âNo, no, he likes you just fine, I promise!â You reassured him, reaching forward to pat his knee. âI just stress him out, thatâs all. Iâll text him right now, okay? Weâll get you feeling better in no time!â
âCanât believe heâs making us come to him,â you grumbled, pushing your way through the sidewalks with Jungwooâs arm around your shoulders. âYou literally have bruised ribs and fell from the fucking sky last night.â
âI donât mind,â Jungwoo tried to be diplomatic, even as he held his side with his free hand. âHeâs doing me a favor.â
âHeâs being an asshole.â You tried to match Jungwooâs slow, hobbling pace. âMaking you come all the way across the city in pain. Risking you being out in public. Goddamn asshole.â
âI donât mind,â your companion repeated, looking up past the visor of the baseball cap youâd put on him to conceal his glinting iridophore flecks as best as possible. âI havenât seen much of Earth. Your sky is beautiful. Is it always blue?â
âDuring the day, yeah, usually. What color is Galariaâs?â
âA bright violet.â He was leaning more of his weight on you, and you stepped into the alcove of a shop door to rest for a moment. The crowd continued hurrying by you as you leaned against the wall and Jungwoo leaned against you.
âPurple sky?â You repeated, staring up at the crystalline blue expanse above you and trying to picture it.
âYes, most of the time.â
âThat sounds really gorgeous.â
âI suppose it is.â
You looked over at him curiously. âYou donât think so?â
âWell, I suppose Iâm just so used to it⌠I donât know,â he shrugged, looking back to the clear aqua sky above you. âI quite like your blue sky.â
âI think Iâd like to see your purple sky someday,â you hummed thoughtfully.
âReally?â
âYeah, as long as you could bring me back,â you shrugged. âAlways wanted to travel.â
Jungwoo blinked down at you, and you shook your head with a chuckle.
âSorry, that probably sounded like I was asking to run away with you or something. And youâre like, in a bunch of pain,â you laughed at yourself. âI should stop blabbing and get you to the man with the morphine. You ready to keep going?â
âYes, absolutely.â
At Johnnyâs animal clinic, you had to stay in the waiting room while he finished up with a patient. After he handed the dog back to its owner, and dismissed the front desk attendee for their lunch break, he finally gestured the two of you back. You helped Jungwoo up from his seat, wrapping his arm back around you so you could slowly follow your friend into the back. Johnny held the door open for you all as he led the way into the exam room. You could tell the morphine had been wearing off faster and faster, even though Jungwoo hadnât said anything. He had been favoring his side more and more, and vocalizing noises of pain more frequently as the day wore on.
âHow is it?â Johnny was nice enough to ask as you helped Jungwoo half-sit and half-lean on the exam table. Youâd seen some pretty big animals on this thing, you were pretty sure it could handle him.
âFine,â Jungwoo hissed.
âHeâs not bleeding on the outside anymore, but everythingâs still pretty banged up internally,â you answered honestly, shooting Jungwoo a pointed look. âDo you think you could like x-ray him while weâre here? See if anythingâs broken?â
Johnny stopped where he had been getting supplies from some drawers. âWould x-rays kill him?â
âI mean, you traveled through space, right? Isnât there a bunch of radiation there?â You asked Jungwoo hopefully. âJohnny can take some pictures of you with x-rays, right?â
âYes, that will be fine,â Jungwoo nodded minutely.
And so Johnny moved around his portable x-ray machine to take a few images of Jungwooâs side where the pain was most concentrated. You had to stand outside the room while it was being done, but as soon as Johnny gave you the thumbs-up, you rushed back in, helping Jungwoo sit back up. Johnny took the lead vest back off, leaving him in his white coat again as he went back over to the imaging machine.
âOkay, here we go,â Johnny muttered, clicking a few things on the computer to pull up the images. âRemember, Iâm not a human doctor, and definitely not an alien doctor.â
âWe know, Johnny,â you retorted.
The first image came up, and you yourself werenât any kind of doctor, but that definitely didnât look right. A dark line going right down what you assumed to be a rib, splitting it all the way through. âYep, your ribâs broken,â Johnny declared, pointing to the severance.
Jungwooâs brow furrowed with concern. âIt shouldnâtââ
âYeah, no shit. Remember, dude, you fell out of the sky twelve hours ago, Iâm surprised youâre alive.â
âNo, I should be more healed than that.â
âYou said that the lack of hydrogen in the atmosphere was making it so your body couldnât produce as much natural painkillers, remember? Maybe something is making you heal a bit slower, too,â you suggested reassuringly. âIâm sure youâll be fine, itâll just be a little longer.â
âThatâs probably it,â Johnny agreed. âAre you eating enough? I know Y/N only has that vegan crap at her house, you probably need a real mealââ
âHis whole planet is vegetarian, you dick.â You flipped him off. âYouâd probably kill him if you gave him a steak.â
âAlright, damn,â he held his hands up with a laugh. âLet me just shoot him up with morphine and you two can get out of here, huh? Iâll do a double dose from last time.â
âI need to be able to get him home, John,â you said frankly.
âIâll drive you.â
âAlright,â you nodded, then looked to the alien. âSound good Jungwoo? Twice as much as last time? So hopefully itâll last a bit longer?â
He nodded, his eyes fixated on Johnny as the human had gone back to getting the supplies for the injection. You grabbed his hand without prompting, flashing him a bright smile as you tried to come up with something to talk about to distract him. âSo, how else are Earth and Galaria different?â You asked him. âThe skies are different colors, we know that. What about the oceans? Do you guys have oceans?â
âYes, we do.â
âOurs are blue, for the most part. Or, a blue-green.â
âWe haveâoh,â he wrinkled his nose, but didnât look away from you. âPink seas.â
âI think we have a pink sea too, somewhere!â You perked up. âIâd have to look it up, but Iâm pretty sure somewhere has pink water. It might be a lake, actually, not a proper sea. Donât quote me on itâŚâ
Jungwoo smiled at that. âI wonât hold you to it, then.â
âWhat about like, glaciers? Do you have those? Really big floating chunks of ice in the ocean?â
âGalaria is mostly frozen tundraâŚâ
âDamn, really?! How cold is it there? Wait, thereâs like, no way we use anywhere near the same units of measurement for temperature. Your transcoder probably couldnât help with that, huh?â
âNo, we presumably donât use the temperature scale.â
âAll done,â Johnny announced, scooting his chair back and disposing of his needle and gloves. âIâll take you two home now.â
âThanks, Johnny.â You smiled up at him, helping Jungwoo up. âHow are you feeling, Jungwoo?â
The Galarii took a couple slow blinks. âMm⌠starting to feel betterâŚâ
âYou said morphine doesnât make you high, does it make you tired?â You questioned, following Johnny out towards the back where his car was parked in the alley.
âNot usually⌠but my body hasnât been doing what itâs supposed to be doing the whole time Iâve been hereâŚâ he said slowly, narrowly missing hitting his head on the roof as you helped him into the backseat. You scooted in after him, encouraging him to lean against you after youâd buckled him up.
Johnny took off quickly through the streets, occasionally watching the two of you in the rearview mirror. Outside your apartment building, he helped you unload a half-awake Jungwoo, the alien rousing himself just enough to climb the stairs. Giving your friend a final thank-you and goodbye at the entrance to your apartment, you tugged Jungwoo back into your home, guiding him once again back to your bed.
âCome on, time for a nap,â you sighed, encouraging him to lay down. âYou need to rest up, dude.â
âY/N?â He murmured, grabbing your forearm as you went to walk away to leave him in peace.
âYes?â You stopped, looking down at him attentively. âDo you need something, Jungwoo? Water? Food?â
âWill you just⌠sit with me? And talk to me? Until I go to sleep?â He requested. âI⌠find your company soothing.â
âOh.â You shifted your weight uncertainly between your feet, but acquiesced nevertheless, scooting onto the corner of the mattress near his head. âSure, Jungwoo. Here, Iâll look up those pink oceans I was talking about, see if I was right.â
And so you read some Wikipedia articles to Jungwoo about various pink lakes and beaches until his eyes fluttered shut, his breathing evened out, and you were more than certain that he was asleep. But even after you were sure he was fast asleep, and you stopped reading the article aloud, you stayed right there, silently scrolling on your phone and occasionally looking from your screen over to his face. Because for some reason that you couldnât put your finger on, you sort of found his presence calming, too.
When it seemed as though Jungwoo was stirring, you quickly got up from your spot and scurried from the room, feeling a bit weird about sitting and watching him sleep the whole time. You had a feeling that he wouldnât have minded, but you didnât want it to be a fact known to anybody but you that you had done that. Truly, you didnât even want to really admit it to yourself, either. And so, when Jungwoo finally wandered out of your bedroom some hours later, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, he found you tucked into the corner of your couch, in the middle of an episode of a TV show, as if you had been doing that the whole time.
âHey, sleepyhead,â you greeted him nonchalantly, pausing the episode. âHowâd you sleep?â
âMm, well,â his reply was punctuated by a yawn.
âAnd how are you feeling?â
âIâm still feeling the painkiller effect, but I am no longer tired.â
âSo, do you think youâll be up for checking out your ship tonight?â You checked the time on your phone. âWe can probably eat dinner then head out after.â
âYes, I would very much like to see it.â
âCool, letâs do it.â
After eating another modest meal prepared by you, you and Jungwoo headed out. The streets werenât as busy at night, and with Jungwoo moving fully of his own power again, the two of you were able to make your way through them much quicker. The intel you got from Doyoung was good, the entire expanse of beach was roped off with police tape, and one officer was stationed on either side of the shoreline. Because of how far the fire had spread through the trees, the officers were pretty far from where you remembered the ship being. Getting in and out would be the tricky part, but once you were in, you were certain they would be none the wiser that somebody was there.
Jungwoo followed you silently, and you finally found what you were looking for. The old public access to the beach. When you were little, everyone used to have to take a steep staircase that started right off the highway. After a particular heavy rainy season that brought rockslides from the mountain up above, it was deemed entirely unusable by the city, all markers for it taken away, left in disrepair, and a new, much safer one was made further down the road. There was a âCAUTION: ROCKSLIDESâ sign nearby, which is how you knew you were in the right place. The best part was that it was right in the middle of the thicket of trees, meaning that as long as you were quick, you should be able to drop right in undetected.
All boardwalks and rope that had been spared by rockslides and Mother Nature over the years were left untouched by the city government, and you were able to start the steep descent like normal. It was about a third of the way down that things started getting dicey, broken pieces of wood, large gaps that you had to step over, and several areas where you had to test the steadiness of rocks before putting your weight on it because there was no manmade material for you to step on at all. When you and Jungwoo got to the place where the path wouldâve diverted to the beach instead of dropping you right into the trees, you bit your bottom lip and resisted cursing aloud. It was a steep drop from where you were. It was too dark for you to see where the ground was, but instinct and memory told you it was too steep for you to just jump down. Looking around desperately, you realized there was a much shallower incline further down the trail, but it was close to where one of the officers was patrolling. You were already too near him for your liking.
A distant voice humming got closer and closer, and you held your breath and held your position, keeping your eyes peeled in the direction of the noise for any sign of movement through the trees. You never did see the police officer, but eventually the humming got further away again, until you stopped hearing it, and you made a break for the shallow area, sliding down the mostly sandy, occasionally rocky hill on your butt. You heard the sounds of Jungwoo hurrying after you, but didnât look behind you until you were sure you two were well concealed in the trees again. Glancing up at him, you saw his chest heaving, and motioned for him to keep quiet as you listened to the officer run back over towards the road end of his side.
The crackle of a walkie-talkie, then a distant voice. âHey, I think I heard something. You hear anything?â
After a second, his buddy responded, his voice slightly garbled through the walkie-talkie speaker. âYeah, you heard a rock fall down the mountain. Rockslide area. Been hearing them all night.â
âDamn, youâre right. Thanks.â And he was gone again.
You took off through the brush at a brisk pace, knowing that Jungwoo would be right behind you. The ship was easy to find, with the concentration of charred and blackened foliage getting greater and greater the closer you got to it. When you finally found it, the spaceship was mostly intact, which the size of the explosion from last night did not lead you to believe. Jungwoo let out a sigh of relief, and did a quick walk-around first. It was when you got to the tail that you saw why there had been such a huge fireball. Four huge canisters that must have housed something flammable were nothing more than metallic flowers now, the material burst open and curling over on itself from the force of the explosion.
âThe reactorsâŚâ Jungwoo breathed out.
You chewed on your bottom lip, asking quietly, âIs it fixable?â
âI donât want to say anything until I see the inside.â
You followed him around to the side, where he pressed a button that you had missed last night on account of it being entirely smooth and looking like nothing more than a random dot. A set of hand and foot rails emerged seamlessly from the surface of the hull for you to climb up with. Once the two of you were up at the cockpit, Jungwoo pressed another button up there, and the ladder seemed to melt back into the metal of the ship once again. The glass was still propped open, making it very easy for you to hop down into the ship. Whatever red flashing warning lights that were going off before had deactivated, leaving it in pitch black, and you immediately brought out your phone to turn the flashlight on.
âAh, thank you,â Jungwoo said as you pointed it at wherever he looked.
âI told you, Iâm your flashlight girl,â you grinned.
As he looked over many different panels and controls in the cockpit, you drank in every detail with fascination. While the button on the outside of the ship had functioned seemingly almost like a touchscreen, the ones in here looked analog at least, though you couldnât figure out for the life of you what a single one was for. You kept your hands to yourself. Jungwoo finally pressed a button, and a screen lit up, one that quaintly reminded you of computers from the nineties in its size and resolution. As he navigated through the program, you watched with interest. He sat down in one of the two chairs, and indicated to the other one for you. You eagerly sat. It was remarkably comfy.
âYou seem to be very close to Johnny,â he commented abruptly, spamming one button in particular with a bit of frustration.
âWeâre all really close.â You nodded, and the program finally loaded the next screen. âBut yeah, I guess John and I are a bit different. Our parents are all friends, so weâve been friends since we were little. Heâs had to deal with my bullshit for our whole lives. We even call each otherâs parents Aunt and Uncle, that kind of thing.â
âHe is⌠similar to your cousin?â
âSort of? I donât know, he was kind of like a built-in older brother.â A sheepish smile tugged at the corner of your mouth as you reminisced in childhood memories. âPeople in our neighborhood and at school did actually think we were cousins. Heâs a few years older than me, and I was a bit of a troublemaker. I remember heâd pull me away from getting into fights with kids way bigger than me, or when Iâd talk back to teachers, the head teacher always brought the both of us in for a scolding. Something about how he should be keeping his younger cousin in check, too. Poor guy. He took it like a champ. We came to an agreement that he wouldnât tell my parents if I stopped getting in trouble so much.â
âYouâre not so unruly anymore.â
âOh, Iâve still got a bit of a rebellious streak,â you chuckled. âJohnny always says Iâm going to make him go grey. I mean, you and I are literally on a crime scene right now. And I pulled an alien out of a spaceship that was about to explode last night.â
âI suppose thatâs trueâŚâ Jungwoo trailed off, brow furrowing as what looked like a schematic of some sort came up on the screen. âHm.â
âSomething wrong?â
âMixed results.â
âWhat?â
âThere are some bad things and some good things.â
âTell me the bad stuff first.â
âWhat?â
âWhen somebody says âIâve got good news, and Iâve got bad news,â theyâre supposed to let you pick if you want to hear the good news or the bad news first,â you explained the small colloquialism. âI want the bad news first, so we can end on the good stuff.â
âI seeâŚâ he hummed, clicking a few more things. âThe bad news is⌠I will need to reconstruct the reactors and make other minor repairs.â
âAnd how long will that take?â
âI do not know Earth measurements of time.â
âYouâve been on Earth for one day now. How many of those do you think itâll take?â
He took a moment to think about this, then eventually answered, âTwenty to thirty? Maybe more, maybe less, Iâm unsure, I was asleep for much of the âdayâ that I experienced.â
You nodded. âOkay. And the good news?â
âThere was no serious structural damage to the hull or critical systems of the ship. Once I reconstruct the reactors and make those repairs, I will be able to leave.â
âThatâs great news, Jungwoo!â You beamed, holding up a hand for him. He uncertainly put his palm against yours and laced your fingers together, eyes flicking around the ship nervously. You burst into laughter. âI wasnât trying to hold your hand again, sorry. Itâs a high-five. Itâs celebratory, friendly.â
âAh. My apologies. How do you do that, then?â He took his hand back from yours.
âI put my hand up for you, and you hit your palm to mine pretty hard. Youâre trying to make aââ you clapped your own two hands together ââsound.â
âI think I understand.â
âOkay, take two.â You held your hand up, and he gingerly tapped his hand to yours. Once again, you couldnât help but giggle fondly. âYeah, pretty much. A for effort,â you declared. âSo, anything else you need to do right now? Or is that it for tonight?â
âI wish I could begin working right now, however I will need lots of materials for the reactors.â
âLetâs get out of here, we can talk about what kind of stuff you need and where to get it on the way home.â
âSo is your brother older or younger?â You asked as you and Jungwoo took a more leisurely pace back to your apartment.
âIâm sorry?â Jungwoo tilted his head, as if he hadnât heard you, which was weird, considering he was already looking at you when you turned to ask him that.
âYour brother whose ship you took. Is he older than you or younger?â
âI⌠donât know.â He frowned thoughtfully.
You balked. âYou donât know?â
âNo. Itâs not something weâre told on Galaria.â
âButââ You laughed out of habit as your brain tried to process this information. âWhat? Why?â
âItâs not important.â
âI mean, I guess not. But like, it is!â
âWhy?â
âI mean, some cultures here have entire systems of honorifics that you call people based on your age relative to theirs. But justââ You were still staring at him. âDonât you know how old your brother is?â
âI know his birthday.â
âBut not how old he is?â
âI⌠suppose not.â He shrugged. âThatâs all kept somewhere.â
âIâm sorry, itâs just difficult for me to wrap my head around. Youâre not allowed to know your brotherâs ageââ
âIâm allowed to know,â he corrected you. âIf we were to learn somehow now, it would be fine. Thereâs no punishment for it. But itâs just not something that we grow up knowing. Nobody is referred to as the older or younger.â
âDo you remember your brother being born?â
âNo.â
âWas he in a higher grade than you in school?â
âSchool is based on ability, not age.â It was his turn to look at you with bewilderment. âYou move up in levels as your learning progresses, not your physical body. Is that how it works here?â
âWe keep kids who are the same age together, yeah.â
âFascinating.â
âWhat about siblings that have big age gaps? Where you can totally tell whoâs older and whoâs younger?â You asked. âOr step-siblings? Like, you already knew their age and then your parents got together?â
âAgain, itâs not forbidden to know a siblingâs age,â Jungwoo reiterated. âItâs just not⌠important.â
âSo if your brother is a controversial politician⌠What are you?â It felt like you could ask him questions forever and never run out. âYou never did tell me that earlier.â
âMy profession?â
âYeah. What do you for work?â
âSpecialized cargo transport.â
âUhâŚâ You blinked up at him. âYou know that sounds really shady, right?â
âWhen people need things transported across galaxies, typically under time constraints, or with specific instructions, they come to me.â He tried to explain it further.
âWhat kind of stuff have you transported, then?â
âAnything from fuel, to an engagement comb, to produce from someoneâs home planet that they were missing after moving elsewhere,â he shrugged.
âSo youâre like an intergalactic DHL driver,â you laughed. âSounds fun, I guess. Youâve been to a lot of places, then?â
âYes, many different planets and cities and galaxies.â
âAnd this is your first time on Earth?â
âI havenât had a reason to come to this solar system before. Your planet isnât exactly involved in intergalactic trade. So, I might not have another chance to visit.â
âNobodyâs requesting any black market Earth commodities?â
âI guess⌠we donât really know whatâs here. Nobodyâs ever put in the effort to find out, I suppose.â
You couldnât help but laugh again. âWeâre just not interesting enough, huh? Canât even make it on the niche alien knickknack market.â
Jungwoo smiled a little. âThat tends to be a good thing, in my experience.â
The two of you were walking through a night market at that point, and you perked up as you saw a particular stall. Your dinner earlier hadnât included a dessert for Jungwoo. You stopped him, pointing to the ice cream stand. âOoh, hey, you want something sweet?â
âSweetâŚ?â He peered over the crowd to try to see what they were serving.
âYeah, dessert. Ice cream. Want some? Theyâve got toppings too.â You pulled him into the line as you talked. âYou can get sprinkles and candy, or even entire brownies as toppings. And theyâve got some really good flavors.â
âWhich flavor do you like?â
âPeanut butter cup and green tea are my two favorites. But you can only get one flavor at a time here,â you sighed wistfully, getting on your tiptoes to look at their options again. âI think Iâm going to do green tea todayâŚâ
With your own green tea cone and Jungwooâs peanut butter cup selection in hand, the two of you started back down the streets together. You watched with interest as Jungwoo took his first tentative lick off the scoop, his face lighting up with delight.
âItâs good!â He declared happily. âWe have something similar... on Galaria.â
âIf your planet is mostly frozen tundra...â you paused to eat some of your own ice cream. âIs most of your food hot or cold?â
He seemed to contemplate this for a moment. âI donât know...â
âItâs okay, Jungwoo,â you laughed at how hard he seemed to be thinking about it. âI wouldnât be able to answer that about Earth food. It wasnât a very fair question, I think.â
âStill, I feel bad that I canât answer your question.â
âItâs fine, really,â you promised, squeezing his arm. âItâs not going to keep me up at night.â
The next day, after another injection from Johnny on the vetâs way into work, you took Jungwoo to Yutaâs garage. There was no way you would be of any serious help when it came to furnishing him with parts for his ship, nor did you really want him just walking into your local hardware store asking for alien spaceship parts. Today seemed to be a slow day, as only one of Yutaâs coworkers was there, firmly wedged under a car on the other side of the garage, loudly playing music from a speaker, so you werenât worried about him eavesdropping on your conversation so long as you kept your voices low. Jungwoo and Yuta had a slightly rocky start, obviously using different terminology, but eventually got on the same page, leaving you in the dust as they started going over various specifications and parts. You zoned out, taking over Yuta's chair and kicking up your feet on his workbench as you let their words go in one ear and out the other.
âHey,â Yutaâs hand came down on your head, catching your attention again.
You craned your neck back to look up at him. âYeah?â
âIâve given him everything I had in stock, thereâs a few things you guys will have to pick up at a shop,â he explained, and you turned around to see Jungwoo loaded up with a duffel bag that he hadnât walked in with. âI wrote everything out so you know how to ask for it in human.â
âThanks, Yuta.â You stood up and got out your wallet. âHow much do I owe you for the parts?â
âDonât worry about it.â
âWhat? Butââ
âHey, we all want to help him get home.â He held his hands up, backing away from your money. âJust doing my part.â
You narrowed your eyes at him knowingly. âUh-huh... very charitable... Whatâs the catch?â
âWell, Iâm going on this date tomorrow, andââ
âPass.â
âYou didnât even hear me out!â
âIâm assuming the girl wants to bring a friend, youâre trying to turn it into a double date,â you snorted. âThe last time I went on a double date with youââ
âNo, not you,â Yuta waved you off. âJungwoo!â
âExcuse me?â
Your friend had already sidled up to the alien, throwing an arm around his shoulders. âWhat do you think? Date with an Earth girl? Youâre only going to be here for so long...â
You rubbed your face in exasperation. âYuta, you do remember that we donât want people to find out that we have an alien here, right?â
âWe can say heâs from out of town.â
âWhat is wrong with you?â You stared at him incredulously. âJust bring Johnny, or Jae, or any of your other ten million single human loser friends.â
âYouâre not Jungwooâs mom,â Yuta snorted.
âWell, noââ
âThere we go, Jungwoo, do you want to go?â Yuta focused his question on Jungwoo instead.
Jungwooâs eyes shifted nervously between you and Yuta. âUhm, well...â
âOkay, I hate to be crude here, but keeping in mind how your successful dates usually look, Yuta,â you cut in again pointedly, âWe canât risk exposing what Jungwoo is. Doesnât matter if we say heâs from out of town.â
Yuta raised an eyebrow at you. âWow, Y/N, didnât think youâd bring up the alien dick angle first.â
You groaned as your face burned. âYouâre the worst. Whyâd you have to say it?â
âPretty sure you said itââ
âWill you drop it?!â
âI donât want to go!â Jungwoo interjected loudly, stopping yours and Yutaâs bickering. âI donât want to go. Uhm, thank you for the invitation, Yuta, really. But Iâd rather not...â
Yuta shrugged. âAlright. Iâm pretty sure Doyoungâs free.â
Your skin was still on fire as you left Yutaâs garage. He didnât end up making you pay, despite neither of you fulfilling his need for a double-date partner. You were pretty sure the embarrassment of that conversation was payment enough in his mind. As you and Jungwoo headed for the nearest hardware store, you swallowed down some of your discomfort, unable to imagine how Jungwoo was feeling in that moment.
âIâm sorry about him, Jungwoo,â you sighed. âHe shouldnât have dragged you into all that.â
He looked down at you curiously. âDo you frequently feel the need to apologize for othersâ behavior?â
You blinked at him, caught off-guard. âUhm... What?â
âYou apologized for Donghyuck and Mark being excited and a bit overzealousâin your opinionâwhen they met me. Now youâre apologizing for Yuta asking for a favor that was inappropriateâagain, in your opinion. Do you do that a lot? Feel responsible for what your friends do or say to other people?â
âWell... I mean, no,â you stared down at the shopping list in your hand hard as you thought. âI guess... Iâm embarrassed that theyâre not behaving better around you.â
âYouâre embarrassed of your friends?â
âNo, I like them. I like my friends, or I wouldnât be their friend.â You bit the inside of your cheek. âI mean... theyâre not treating you like someone they just met. Theyâre treating you like theyâve known you for as long as theyâve known the rest of us. Youâre supposed to ease into that stuff so you donât scare people off.â
âThat makes me happy,â Jungwoo declared, a soft smile on his face as he looked down at you.
âWhat? Why?â
âBoth that your friends would want to be familiar with me and not treat me like an outsider, and that youâre afraid of their behavior making me uncomfortable,â he explained. âYou donât want me to leave. Of course that makes me happy.â
You felt your eyes widen as you looked up at him. âWell, I mean, I do want you to leave, eventually. Obviously, I want you to go home. But I mean, yeah, I want your time here to be nice, you know? I donât want you to be back home on Galaria thinking about your time on Earth being bad.â
A strange look flickered across the spacemanâs face then, you couldâve almost sworn it was pained, before the same serene smile came back. âI think Iâll remember my time on Earth very fondly. Really.â
You looped your arm with his, trying to shake the memory of the odd look on his face from your mind, playfully bumping your shoulder into him. âWell then letâs get you off Earth so you can start looking back on it, hm?â
After getting your last few things at the hardware store, you had to wait for the sun to go down before heading back to the beach. The path down to the ship was even more treacherous now that the two of you were loaded up with supplies, but you finally made it there in one piece. Jungwoo didnât stop in the cockpit this time, leading the way towards the back of the ship, through the narrow hallway. He pressed a button outside a doorway, then when nothing happened, pressed it again. Nothing. He banged his fist against it a couple of times, cursing under his breath.
âWhatâs in there?â You asked.
âItâs the crew quarters,â he sighed, running a hand through his hair. âThereâs a desk in there. Weâll be a lot more cramped working in the cockpit, but apparently this circuitry got affected too.â
âBut we can still do it, right?â
He nodded. âYeah, yeah.â
You turned around to head back to the front of the ship. âThen letâs get started.â
Jungwoo seemed to be able to do much of the repairs on his own. You shone the flashlight on the work area, handed him tools and parts when requested, or held small pieces so they didnât roll away from him. It was a bit cramped sitting on the floor of the cockpit behind the seats, it obviously wasnât designed with this purpose in mind, and Jungwooâs long limbs only made the space feel even smaller.
âCan you move the light here?â He requested, pointing to the side of the device that was facing him.
You scooted closer, trying to maneuver your phone around without blocking his vision with it. âHowâs that?â
He shook his head. âI still canâtââ
âHold on.â You scooted around behind him instead, pointing the flashlight from over his shoulder. âWhat about this?â
Jungwoo was quiet for a beat, and you peered around to try to look him in the eye.
âJungwoo?â
âThatâs perfect,â he answered, eyes focused down at object in his hands. âIs your arm getting tired?â
That was the first time you really noticed the ache in your limb from holding up your phone for so long. âYeah, a little, I guess.â
âYou can rest it on my shoulder, if you want.â
âOh, thanks.â You lowered your arm until it was propped up by his shoulder, making sure you adjusted your grip on your phone to keep your light on the same place. âLight still good?â
âYes, thank you.â
As he kept working, you quietly watched his deft fingers move over the pieces. âSo how do you know how to do all this?â
âI fly a lot,â he answered, his attention held by the parts in his hands as he was trying to precisely line up two of them.
âYeah, but I mean, I have a driverâs license and I couldnât change a flat tire, gun to my head, much less fix up the whole car if I crashed it off the side of a mountain,â you scoffed.
âYouâre allowed to pilot a vehicle that youâre unable to repair yourself?â
âWe have mechanics and stuff for that. Are you saying youâre not allowed to get your spaceship pilotâs license or whatever on Galaria without knowing how to build one from scratch?â
âYouâre required to have a certain engineering proficiency to get your solo pilotâs license, yes.â
âAh, you have a specialty license, then.â
âYes, I do. Itâs a requirement in case you ever find yourself in circumstances like this.â
âCrash landed on an alien planet and stranded with a busted ship?â
âYes.â
You noticed that he had paused his machinations as you were talking. âSorry, am I distracting you?â
âNo, this is all I can do tonight. The adhesive needs to cure for some time before I can continue working.â He carefully set the part down. âI should be able to resume tomorrow night, I believe.â
âSounds good to me.â You yawned and stretched your arms over your head. âIâve got work tomorrow anyway.â
âAnd what job do you do?â Jungwoo asked with intrigue as the two of you stood up.
âReception at a law firm.â You could feel your nose habitually wrinkle with disdain.
âYou donât like it?â He immediately surmised.
Thankfully, the two of you were climbing out of the ship then, and had to stay silent through your trek up from the beach. You had time to think about how to answer his question as you climbed back up to the main roadway.
Finally, as the two of you started the walk down the shoulder of the highway, you let out a huff and said, âThe work is fine, I guess. Except I hate being talked down to and belittled by people on the phone who think Iâm stupid just because theyâre attorneys and Iâm not, or because Iâm a woman, or Iâm young, or because Iâm just a receptionist or whatever. And I hate when they start yelling at me for no fucking reason, and I hate when people are in the office and start being fucking rude to me and Iâm supposed to just sit there and take it. And I hate that in between all of that, itâs fucking boring. It constantly fluctuates between being so stressful and so goddamn boring I want to bang my head against a wall either way.â
âSo... you donât like it?â he asked again, head tilted with clear confusion on his features.
âItâs a job,â you replied flatly. âI need to eat. Do you like your job?â
âYes, quite,â he replied quietly. After a pause, he questioned, âWhat sort of work do you want to do, then?â
âI wish I didnât have to.â You let out a cynical chuckle, looking up at the sparse dotting of stars above you as the hum of the city streets started up around you again. âI mean, Iâve always wanted to see more of the world, just do more, learn more. And now that I know that aliens are realââ You looked over at Jungwoo wistfully. âI donât think Iâll ever be happy behind a desk again. You know?â
Jungwoo met your eyes, his lips parted as he couldnât seem to respond for a moment.
You shook your head at yourself, looking back down at your feet and the concrete below them. Forcing humor back into your tone, you apologized, âSorry, sorry. Of course you donât know, youâre criss-crossing galaxies all the time, huh? Youâve got enough problems of your own right now anyway, you donât need mine too.â
A large hand grabbed yours, cool to the touch and surprisingly firm as it squeezed yours. You could feel the callouses on Jungwooâs hand where his skin pressed against yours. Shifting your gaze from your shoes back up to the alien, you furrowed your brow curiously, but made no move to pull away.
âPlease, give them to me,â he said. âAnd when I leave, you can imagine that Iâm taking all your problems with me, to somewhere very far away from here.â
It was your turn to be speechless for a moment, and the only thing that kept you from skidding to a stop in the middle of the sidewalk was the sea of other pedestrians keeping your momentum moving forward. Your skin got hotter, and you wondered if Jungwoo could feel it where he was holding your hand.
In an instinctive bid to diffuse the tension that was currently squeezing all the air from your lungs, you gave his shoulder a friendly bump as you teased, âAlright, well hereâs a new problem: Thatâs quite possibly the most romantic thing anybodyâs ever said to me, and Iâm 100% sure you didnât even do that on purpose.â
âIââ
âAnd our next problemââ You plowed right past whatever Jungwoo was about to say, still fighting the prickle along your skin where you knew his eyes were. âUnfortunately, itâs not Bring Your Alien to Work Day tomorrow, so do you think youâll be okay at my apartment by yourself all day? Or do you want me to see if some of the guys can keep you company?â
âWhile I donât want to inconvenience anybody, if somebody has time, I wouldnât mind seeing more of the city.â
âSure, Iâll find someone.â You immediately took your phone out to text your top choice.
[you: are you busy tomorrow? i need someone to hang out with jungwoo while im at work]
[yonggie: i have a few errands to run and a few of us were talking abt seeing a movie in the afternoon. heâs welcome to tag along!]
[yonggie: unless the grocery store and stuff is going too be too boring?? i can do it another day and we can do something else!]
[you: i just feel bad keeping him cooped up in my apartment by himself all day. im sure heâll have plenty of fun going grocery shopping with you. heâs never seen a human grocery store, after all]
[yonggie: sounds like a plan! let him know iâll be by around 10ish!]
[you: thanks yonggie, i owe you]
âTaeyong is free tomorrow,â you announced to Jungwoo. âYou havenât really met him yet, but he was there when we found you. You donât mind tagging along with him while he runs a few errands, do you? Heâll be going all around the city, Iâm sure. Oh, and it sounded like some of the guys might be doing a movie later, too.â
âThank you, Y/N,â Jungwoo smiled down at you. âFor everything.â
You smiled and lightly elbowed him again. âLike I said, I want you to have good memories of Earth.â
A few more days passed by like that, with you finding various friends to leave Jungwoo with during the day while you went to your dreadfully boring job, then the two of you would eat dinner together before heading off to the beach to work on his spaceship until late. Tonight in particular, you didnât have much to help with, as he was able to prop up a spare flashlight youâd gotten from the hardware store for illumination as he worked.
âWhen do you think weâll be done tonight?â You asked, spinning the cockpit seat around as you unfocused your eyes, letting the colorful lights become hazy blurs and streaks in your vision.
âSoon,â he answered shortly as he usually did when he was focused. âDo you have something you need to do?â
âThe guys are going out.â You read the texts on your phone as they streamed in. âThey invited me and you, by the way.â
âMe?â
âYeah, Jaehyun just got promoted to assistant professor, so weâre celebrating.â You stopped your spinning to watch him work again, but found that he had stalled his ministrations. âItâll be at least two or three nightclubs; if youâre not up for that, thatâs fine.â
âThey invited me?â He repeated, brow furrowed as he had clearly not been expecting that.
You couldnât help but laugh and pat the back of his head fondly. âYeah, Jungwoo, they like you. Itâs also definitely a bit of novelty, you knowââHey letâs see if we can get the alien shitfacedââbut I wonât let them mess with you.â
âYes, Iâd like to go with you.â He smiled, looking back down at the contraption in his hands. âIt wonât be much longer.â
Knocking on the front door of a very familiar apartment, you bounced on your toes as you waited for one of the occupants to answer. It was Johnny who opened the door, eyes lingering on Jungwoo behind you before he went to give you a hug. âHey, kid. How are you?â
âGood, good. How are you, John?â You patted his back them dropped back down onto flat feet.
âSame old, you know?â He grinned and shrugged, then finally addressed Jungwoo. âHey, man. Howâs your side?â
âFine, good. Thank you,â Jungwoo answered hastily, offering a polite nod.
âJae!â You called into the apartment, latching onto Jungwooâs wrist and dragging him over to Jaehyunâs closed bedroom door. You banged on the door. âJaehyun! Come on, itâs me, your favorite!â
The door opened a second later, Jaehyun looking at you stone-faced as he buttoned up his shirt. âYou claim youâre everyoneâs favorite.â
âI am! Arenât I?â You grinned.
âCanât a guy get dressed in his own apartment in peace? Bother Johnny.â He was about to close the door in your face when you stuck your foot in the way.
âCan Jungwoo borrow some clothes?â You requested sweetly, batting your eyelashes at him.
Jaehyun looked the alien up and down skeptically. âHeâs already wearing my clothes.â
âHe canât go to the club in a sweatshirt and jeans!â
Your friend sighed and opened the door wider, jerking his head in a gesture for you two to come in.
âThank you!â You squealed, pulling Jungwoo in with you.
Jaehyun sat on his bed as you started rifling through his closet for something for Jungwoo to wear. Pulling a couple shirts down first, you held them up to the spaceman, humming to yourself as you compared how they looked on them. You clicked your tongue and shook your head, putting one back and looking for another. With two new shirts, you held them up again, nodding in satisfaction. âYeah, I like that a lot better.â
âHeâs not a doll, Y/N,â Jaehyun snorted. âGo ahead, Jungwoo, you can tell her not to play dress-up with you.â
Jungwoo rubbed the back of his neck, the iridophores on his cheeks flashing as he shifted awkwardly in place. âI donât mind it, reallyâŚâ
âAnd thatâs how I ended up as the first and only victim of Y/Nâs Barber Shop when I was eight.â Johnny had joined the three of you, leaning in the bedroom doorway with his arms crossed over his chest.
âYou say that like your hair didnât grow back,â you scoffed. âI didnât take your ear off or anything.â
âJust my dignity.â
âAnd who gave me the scissors?â
Johnny held his hands up in surrender, making his roommate laugh.
âJohnnyâs always been a pushover when it comes to Y/N,â Jaehyun explained to Jungwoo, still chuckling. âEver since they were kids.â
âAlright guys, listen up!â You called for their focus loudly. âThis is going to be one of the most important questions I ask you in our entire lives.â
Johnny and Jaehyun gave you two very similar amused but attentive looks, while Jungwoo beheld you with absolutely rapt attention.
You held up the two shirts that you had narrowed your selection to for Jungwoo. âWhite lace or black silk?â
âHeâs not wearing those jeans, is he?â Johnny cocked his head.
âGod no,â you shook your head. âOr the sneakers. Iâm thinking simple black pants and boots. His necklace will go good with both, right?â You pointed to the gold transcoder that rested below his collarbones.
âWhite.â Jaehyun pointed.
âBlack.â Johnny shrugged.
âHelpful.â You glared at them. Turning to Jungwoo, you held up the tops. âWhat do you think? Do you even like them at all? These are just my favorites, you can pick something else if you want.â
âI like them,â Jungwoo reassured you, fingertips gently running over the front of one shirt, then the other. âWhich is your favorite?â
âI think the black silk?â You appraised it again. âYeah, I like the neckline, and I think the material will move really nice for a night out, you know?â
âThatâs what I was thinking.â
You handed him that hanger and put the other back in the closet where you found it. Looking at the owner of the room, you prompted, âJae, youâll get him the right pants and stuff, right?â
âSure,â he nodded and stood up, teasing glint in his eye. âItâs not like weâre meant to be celebrating my accomplishments tonight or anything. Iâm just a butler, really.â
âGreat, thanks!â You grinned back, traipsing out of the room with Johnny.
A few minutes later, Jaehyun joined the two of you in the living room, sitting down on the couch and pulling his shoes on. âSo, anything new, Y/N?â He asked innocently.
âYou mean, other than the alien living in my apartment?â You raised an eyebrow at him. âNot really, workâs the same.â
âYouâre still at that shit place?â Johnny didnât hide his distaste of your workplace.
âYup.â You replied flatly.
âI thought you said you were looking for new jobs.â
âOne, you said that. I didnât agree to anything. Two, I am, the job market sucks right now, John.â
âHave you even interviewed anywhere? Submitted your rĂŠsumĂŠ?â
âGod, not this againâŚâ Jaehyun groaned from his spot between you two on the couch.
âNot everybody can inherit a veterinary practice once their mentor retires and have their life made,â you snapped, turning to glare at Johnny pointedly.
âMy lifeâs made? Iâm still paying off my student loans, you know that, right?â He scoffed. âNot to mention how much free morphine Iâve been giving your buddy in there just the past few days.â
âI told you Iâll pay you back once heâs better, you said not to worry about it, and now youâre holding it over my head!â You said in disbelief. âGod, this is just like you!â
ââJust like me?ââ
âYes, you always nag me about shit like you think I canât do anything, and insist on handling things for me instead of letting me do it, then just turn right around to use that as further proof that I canât do anything on my own!â You were about to launch to your feet when Jaehyun caught your arm and urged you back into your seat.
âWoah, woah,â Jaehyun looked back and forth between you two. âTime out. Youâre both right and youâre both wrong. Johnny, we get that youâre coming from a good place, but obviously Y/N feels patronized with the way you treat her. Y/N, Johnny has a lot going on too that youâre ignoring on purpose to make him seem like the bad guy, which also isnât fair.â
Johnny pushed some of his hair out of his face as he stared ahead at the TV across the room, obviously refusing to meet your eyes now. You crossed your arms over your chest and flopped back against the cushions, not looking at either of them. Youâve never been great at apologizing first.
âYou two arenât making up before we go out, are you?â Jaehyun rubbed his face.
âNo.â âNope.â
Jaehyunâs bedroom door opened then, Jungwoo hesitantly stepping out, still fussing with the shirt. When he looked up, the searching look fell from his face as he obviously could sense the tension in the room, turning cautious instead.
âIs everything alright?â While his question was general, his eyes were focused on you when he asked.
âYeah, Jungwoo!â You forced a cheery smile again, jumping to your feet as you appraised his outfit. âI love being right. It looks so handsome on you!â
âAh, wellâŚâ He rubbed the back of his neck again as you walked around him, brushing off a spare piece of fluff from his back. âThank you.â
âWhat do you guys think?â You asked the other two proudly, looping your arm with Jungwooâs.
âYeah, he looksââ
âFine. Can we go now?â Johnny cut his roommate off, grabbing his keys and walking over to the door.
âRude,â you muttered under your breath, but followed the other two with a roll of your eyes nevertheless.
âCongrats!â Everybody cheered in unison, clinking their glasses together.
âThanks, guys,â Jaehyun beamed at you all, bringing his drink to his lips.
âSo are you like tenure track now, or what?â Doyoung prompted him eagerly.
âYes, I am,â he announced proudly. âIâm no longer instructional, Iâm academic.â
All your friends let out a chorus of jesting but supportive âoohâs at that, and you squeezed his arm from beside him. âLook at you, a real academic now. Knew that big head was good for something.â
âYou littleââ He went to tousle your hair. You let out an âeep!â and jerked away from his hand, back into Jungwoo on your other side.
âSorry!â You laughed through your apology to the alien, patting his arm as he hadnât been knocked very far back at least. âYou alright, Jungwoo?â
âYes, Iâm okay,â he reassured you with a fond smile.
âNow, are you absolutely sure you can have that?â You pointed to the drink that you had helped him order. After realizing that for some reason he immediately knew what morphine was, but his transcoder was failing on what alcohol was, youâd explained the drinkâwith some assistance from your friends and Googleâto him to make sure it wasnât going to kill him, but you noticed that he hadnât yet actually taken a sip yet.
âYes, yes.â He lifted the glass again.
âIf morphine doesnât get you high, I wonder if alcohol is even going to do anything to do you,â Johnny mused, slowly nursing his liquor.
âTake it slow, drink water, and even though we ate before we came, keep eating while weâre here, okay?â You told Jungwoo, shooting Johnny a glare over the spacemanâs shoulder.
He nodded, and with that, you grabbed your own drink, clinked it to his one more time, and drained half of it in one go. You watched his face carefully, both for any sign that he was in imminent danger, and in the vent that he was fine, if he liked the drink youâd picked. Youâd chosen a cocktail on the sweeter side for him, a fruity, bubbly, unnaturally bright colored one that a couple of the guys had snickered at, which he either didnât notice or didnât care about. Jungwoo didnât immediately go into anaphylactic shock, which you pocketed as a win. Just like when he tried Nutella for the first time, his eyes widened with delight before he went back in for more.
You couldnât help but laugh and pat his head fondly. âPace yourself,â you reminded him.
He set it down and smiled sheepishly. âRight. Thanks.â
Hyuck and Yuta had disappeared at some point, as they were now returning to your table with a round of shots for everybody. You shook your head, but picked yours up and knocked it back with everyone else. Jungwoo watched you, taking your lead. While the rest of you had various hisses and negative reactions to the tequila you were now realizing they had gotten you, Jungwoo seemed unaffected by the burn as he calmly set the shot glass down.
âUgh, did you guys get motor oil or something?â Johnny pushed his glass away from him with distaste.
âCheapest shit they had,â Yuta informed him smugly. âAfraid real motor oil tastes better than that.â
âIâm going to get us some waters,â you told Jungwoo before slipping off into the crowd.
You watched the bartender quickly fill up your two glasses with ice, then water. Right as he had pushed them over to you, you became aware of someone sidling up to you at the bar and grabbing your hip. You whipped around and jerked away to put distance between yourself and the newcomer, a complete stranger to you.
He chuckled at how he had startled you, stepping closer to you once again. âWoah, sorry, baby.â
âItâs fine,â you replied flatly, reaching for your waters to turn to leave.
âHey, I did want to talk to you.â
âNo thanks.â
âYou donât even know me.â
âI donât want to.â You didnât like that he had started shifting in front of you, putting himself between you and the rest of the club, blocking you against the bar.
âY/N!â A familiar voice called your name as a taller figure pushed past the stranger, securing your arm in his hand. Johnny fixed the man with a hard stare before looking at you again, âThere you are. Come on, weâre toasting Jaehyun again.â
âRight,â you smiled up at your friend, letting him half-pull you away from the bar. The other man didnât say a word, letting you go as he disappeared into the crowd as well.
Halfway back to your table, you reluctantly mumbled a sharp âthanksâ to Johnnyâs back. He mustâve heard you somehow over the thumping music, as he looked back over his shoulder at you, his eyes softening for just a moment as he nodded once, before continuing to clear a path for the two of you back to your other friends.
You wormed your way back into your spot between Jungwoo and Jaehyun, pushing Jungwooâs glass against his arm. âHere.â
âThank you.â His eyes didnât leave you, seemingly scanning you over with worry. âAre you alright?â
âHuh? Yeah, fine.â You shook your head to clear away the memory.
âIâm sorry, I realized that man was making you uncomfortable, but I wasn't sure what to do. Johnny told me to stay here while he went over.â
âOh, thatâs okay, Jungwoo.â You assured him. âWe can't have you getting punched defending me and bleed blue all over the place. Thanks for keeping an eye on me and telling Johnny, though.â
âButââ
âHey, you know what?â You flashed him a smile, already starting to feel warm and airy from the alcohol. âI want to dance. How about you come with? Creepy guys should stay away if Iâm already with someone.â
âSure,â he nodded for you to lead the way.
You grabbed his hand and pulled him away from the table and into the outer edge of the dance floor. Putting your hands on his shoulders, you tilted your head, âIs this okay?â
âYeah, should IâŚ?â
You took his hands that were uncertainly hovering in the air and put them on your hips before returning your own to his shoulders. âThere. Also, sorry.â
âFor what?â
As soon as his question was out of his mouth, you inadvertently stepped on his foot, a sheepish smile flashing across your face. âIâm not a very good dancer,â you admitted. âSorry.â
He chuckled. âThatâs okay.â
âHey, youâre pretty good,â you laughed as he kept up with the rhythm and also kept you from being a general hazard.
âThank you.â
âDo you have places like this where youâre from?â You were careful not to say anything out of the ordinary to hint that âwhere he was fromâ was actually outer space.
âResidents from elsewhere have brought similar nightclubs to our larger cities,â he informed you. âIâve visited a few.â
âYou a party boy?â You grinned.
âIâm not sure about that,â he was smiling as well. âBut Iâm enjoying myself with you, Y/N. Thank you.â
âIâm having fun too, Jungwoo,â you replied sincerely. Your toe caught on his shoe then, and you squeaked as you stumbled forward towards him, wrapping your arms around his neck to catch yourself from completely face-planting into his collarbone. His hands on your waist steadied you, and you smiled up at him sheepishly. âSorry. Thanks.â
âYouâre not usually this clumsy.â
âIâm a bit tipsy,â you whispered loudly. âAlcohol and motor function⌠not good.â
âAh, I see.â
âCan I stay right here?â You requested sweetly, watching his patches of iridescent freckles flash and sparkle in the lights that pulsed across the dance floor. âYouâre surprisingly sturdy, and your irido-iridoâyou knowâare so prettyâŚâ
âOf course,â Jungwoo readjusted to hold you more securely. âDo you want to sit down?â
âNo.â You shook your head, starting to sway in his arms to the music. âI like this song.â
A warm puff of air washed over your ear as he chuckled. âI like it too.â
Sometime later in the night, you were sat in a booth at a different nightclub, slowly draining a water that Doyoung had pushed in front of you. Your other friends were somewhere in the club, only Jungwoo next to you. His cheeks were a little pink, but that could easily be from the body heat, as you were pretty sure you hadnât seen him drink anything but water since your first stop of the night.
âHey, Jungwoo?â You looked over at him with your cheek in your palm, supported by your elbow on the table.
âYes?â He met your gaze without hesitation.
âDoââ You were cut off by a hiccup. âDo you think youâll remember me? After you leave, once itâs been a while?â
âWhat?â He blinked at you, face turning oddly stern as he placed his hand over yours on the table. âYes, Y/N. I donât think I could ever forget you.â
âOh. Do Galarii have photographic memory or something?â
âNo.â
âButâŚâ Another hiccup. âDonât you go to all these places and meet so many people and do all sorts of stuff all the time? Like, of course Iâm gonna remember the one alien I ever met, but why would youââ
Jungwoo turned to hold your hand with both of his. âDo you really think that youâre so insignificant? Or that Iâm so⌠indifferent?â
âNo, Jungwoo, I justââ You took your hand back to brush your fingertips over his iridophores under one eye. âI guess itâs kinda like how you donât think these are anything special.â
âY/N, if you remember only one thing from meeting me, pleaseâŚâ He shifted forward slightly, nothing but sincerity on his features. âNo matter where Iâve gone, Iâve never met anyone who wasnât special. Including you.â
You felt your bottom lip quiver, and regretted that last shot you let Yuta and Donghyuck talk you into. As soon as you blinked, the tears fell, rolling quickly down your cheeks. You buried your face in Jungwooâs shoulder, grabbing a fistful of the silk material of his shirt.
âIâm⌠sorry?â He said quietly, gingerly patting your back.
âShe crying?â Johnnyâs voice came from behind you.
âYes, I didnât mean toââ
âItâs fine, sheâs an emotional drunk after sheâs partied herself out,â Johnny reassured the alien. A gentle hand landed on your head. âHey, Y/N, time to go home.â
âThatâs my shirt!â Jaehyun said indignantly, having also returned to your booth.
âIâll clean it before I return it,â Jungwoo promised.
âY/N,â Johnny called for you again in a sing-songy tone. âCome on, letâs go home.â
You lifted your head enough to sloppily wipe at your face, Jungwoo helping to push some hair back. Squinting at Johnny, you asked, âYouâre taking me home?â
âYeah, Iâm taking you home,â he confirmed.
âBut I thought you were mad at me?â
âIâm never that mad, kid, promise.â
âDo you need help, Johnny?â Jaehyun offered, then looked at Jungwoo. âOr are you going now too?â
âIâm going back with her,â Jungwoo immediately replied.
Johnny helped you scoot out of the booth, and on uneasy feet, you threw your arms around Jaehyun to give him one final congrats. Johnny took you back from your professor friend to half-guide, half-carry you out of the nightclub, Jungwoo following behind. Out front, Johnny cursed under his breath as he looked around.
âJungwoo.â He waved the alien over. âStay with her while I bring the car around, will you?â
âOf course.â Jungwoo immediately took your arm from Johnnyâs grasp, steadying you as you swayed in place. Johnny gave the two of you one last uncertain look before taking off around the corner. You stepped closer to Jungwoo, leaning your weight against him as you let out a heavy sigh.
âIâm sorry about himâŚâ You said. âHe should be nicer to you.â
âItâs okay,â Jungwoo responded, shifting to support you with an arm around your waist as your knees buckled for a moment. âHeâs concerned for you, which Iâm glad for.â
âI wish heâd stop treating me like a kid, though,â you huffed. âHe literally calls me âkid.ââ
âIs this why you were so curious that I didnât know if my brother was older or younger?â
âDoes he treat you like a grown-up?â
âHe had some concerns with my career path at first,â he informed you, some amusement in his tone. âBut I also worry for his safety.â
âI worry about Johnny,â you insisted. âI just⌠donât make him feel stupid for it when I do.â
Johnnyâs car stopped in front of you two then, and Jungwoo helped you into the backseat. He gently brushed your hands away so he could do your seatbelt for youâwhich took a few attempts, admittedlyâand let you rest your head on his shoulder for the entire ride back to your apartment.
After a lot of insisting, you finally got Johnny to leave your home. You were tucked into bed in your pajamas with a glass of water, and heard Jungwoo eventually close the front door behind Johnny.
âJungwoo!â You called for the alien loudly, not really caring about the time or your neighbors.
âYes?â His head immediately poked into your room, eyes focused on you attentively.
âCâmere.â You patted the empty space next to you. He walked over to sit down, but as soon as he had, you shooed him away, âWait, no! You should get into your pajamas too.â
âAlright. One moment.â He nodded and smiled softly. A few minutes later, Jungwoo emerged from the bathroom no longer in Jaehyunâs nice clothes but in Jaehyunâs sweatpants and t-shirt. He sat down cross-legged on top of the covers. âBetter?â
âIâm tired,â you rolled over onto your side towards him.
âIâll let you rest, then.â He moved to get off the bed, but you grabbed his arm and stopped him.
âWait.â You yawned. âCan you stay for a bit?â
âAs long as you wish.â He acquiesced easily.
âCan youâŚâ Another yawn. âCan you tell me some more about Galaria?â
He shifted the arm that you had grasped to hold your hand instead. âSure. If youâll close your eyes.â
âYouâre trying to make me go to sleep.â
âHmm, maybe,â he hummed.
You snickered, but let your eyelids flutter shut anyway. âHey, Jungwoo?â
âYes?â
âIâm really gonna miss you once you go.â You squeezed his hand as you shifted around to get comfortable under your covers.
There was a stretch of silence so long that you were almost tempted to open your eyes again, but before you could, he squeezed your hand back and spoke again, voice sounding slightly strained, âIâll miss you too, Y/N. A lot.â He cleared his throat, then continued, âSo, GalariaâŚâ
In the morning, you groaned before you even had a single human thought. You instinctually rolled away from your window, where the faintest halo of light was coming in from around your curtains, burying your face into your pillow. And then your stomach lurched. Heaving yourself to your feet with some speed, you hurried into your bathroom, not even bothering with the light before kneeling at the toilet. Thankfully, nothing came back up, and after a few minutes, you got back to steady-ish feet. Looking back at your dim bedroom, you saw it devoid of anybody else, which you were mildly surprised about. You faintly remembered going to sleep with Jungwoo sitting next to you. He had no clue about human customs, for all you knew, Galarii wouldnât have thought it strange to share a bed. You knocked back something for your stomach and the pounding in your head before treading out towards the living room. You were going to feel a little uneasy until you put eyes on your alien houseguest.
He was sitting upright on the couch, and stood up as soon as he saw you walking out, a relieved smile on his features. âAh, youâre awake. How are you feeling? Johnny said I should make you breakfastââ
âThatâs alright, Jungwoo, Iâm not very hungry right now,â you admitted. âMaybe later. How are you? Anything from the alcohol?â
âIâm fine.â He frowned. âAre you okay?â
âHonestly, Iâm not feeling well, Jungwoo.â You touched your forehead, giving him an apologetic smile. âI think Iâm going to lay down for a bit. Will you be good out here?â
He looked at you anxiously. âWhatâs wrong?â
âJust a headache. Iâll be fine,â you reassured him. âDo you need anything before Iââ
âCan I go with you?â
ââŚInto my room? Thatâs right down the hall? While I nap off a hangover?â You arched an eyebrow, pointing at your bedroom next to the living room.
He nodded.
âWhat? Did you imprint on me like a baby duck or something?â You joked, stretching and yawning.
âI donât know what ducks are nor the imprinting habits of their young, but yes.â
âYou donât really need to know what ducks are, but baby ducksâWait, what?!â Your brain finally processed the rest of his words, and you stared at him wide-eyed.
âIâm not sure if the term is used the same, but I imagine itâs a similar concept.â
âYou think Iâm your mom?!â
It was his turn to look at you with bewilderment. âNo, of course not.â
You put a hand over your chest, relieved. âOkay, God, I had a heart attack.â
âYouâre my mate,â he said matter-of-factly.
âExcuse me?!â And your blood pressure was back through the roof.
âLover? Iâm not sure the termâŚâ Jungwoo scratched the back of his neck.
You held your hands out defensively, trying to calm yourself down more than anyone else. âJungwoo, look, we just met like a few days ago.â
âYes, Iâm aware.â
âThatâs not nearly enough time to say weâre soulmates or anything.â
His face lit up. âAhh, soulmates? Is that the word?â
âNo!â You immediately shot that down. âDonât start calling me that.â
âY/Nââ
âWhat even is this imprinting? Like how do you know itâs happened? Do you do it on purpose? Because if you did, youâve got to ask peopleâs permission before doing that kind of thing, dude.â
âItâs not something we have control over. So no, I did not do it intentionally.â
âOh. Okay.â That only calmed you down marginally.
âItâsâŚâ Jungwoo sank his teeth into his bottom lip as he tried to figure out his words. âI didnât realize it at first. When you dragged me out of my ship and I first saw you, everything was different. I thought it was the new atmosphere, new gravity, that my body was just adjusting.â
âWhat do you mean, âdifferentâ? Different how?â
âColors are brighter around youââ
âThatâs just some cheesy pickup line. It was pitch black when I found you.â
âNo, really. Our speciesâ senses are sharpened around ourââ
âDonât.â
ââwhen weâve imprinted, around whoever weâve imprinted on. To better protect them,â he explained cautiously. âAgain, I thought I was just getting used to your planet, but I always know where you areââ
âI tell you where Iâm going when I leave.â
âI donât mean like that. Itâs stronger the closer you are, but I just always have this feeling, of where you are. I know you left work yesterday afternoon to go down the street, then went back.â
âI went to the convenience store on my lunch break,â you confirmed with a huff. âAssuming youâre telling the truth and arenât actively stalking me, Iâm guessing that would be another⌠mechanism to protect that person? That youâre⌠you know.â
âYes.â
âWhatâs even the point of imprinting on me? Or anybody thatâs not another Galarii?â You crossed your arms. âMy eyes work just fine when youâre not around, and the only way Iâd know exactly where you were if I couldnât see you would be chipping you like a dog.â
âI donât know.â
You shook your head. âSo⌠you all are just, what? Celibate? Until you eventually find someone to imprint on?â
âCasual relationships arenât unusual, though many donât see a point in having such a relationship before imprinting.â He immediately became even more serious. âIâm not inexperienced sexually, if thatâs a concern.â
âOh, God, no!â You covered your face with two hands and groaned. âI was just wondering like⌠How do you know this imprinting thing is for real? Like, youâre actually ending up with someone good for you, if you donât have any sort of reference to draw from on what sort of person you like, what you want and donât want in a relationship?â
âWe donât have to know before, because weâre not picking our⌠lifelong companion, like I understand you humans do.â
You blinked at him. âMarriage. Youâre talking about marriage.â
âYes. You have to have this set of parameters before you prepare for⌠marriage. Weâre not choosing, so we donât need such standards. We find.â
âYeah, but why me? What is it about me that activated your imprinting or whatever the hell?â You couldnât help the shiver that went up your spine when you said it. âShouldnât that be something that only other members of your species can do? Like, evolution-wise?â
âThatâs something that my species is still investigating.â
âGod, okayâŚâ You rubbed your temples. âWell, my head fucking hurts. Iâm going to lay downâalone.â
âOf course.â Jungwoo nodded and stepped back, sitting down on the far side of the couch from you.
Your bed smelled like Jungwoo. You couldnât nap like this, or even rest your eyes. But you didnât want to go back out there yet, needing time to let your brain turn over what youâd just been told. So you laid in your bed that smelled like Jungwoo and scrolled on your phone, absentmindedly chewing on the skin around your thumbnail.

And I would go at him with a hammer if ever given the chance. And in that moment I'd be aware I'd lose but I'd be so consumed with pure feral monkey rage Id just black out and start swinging. Fuck that guy. But also I do wish we could fuck that guy, you know? For the novelty of it at least. And then be like well it was ok. I guess. Like idk it just didn't wow me. I know that would kill him inside. I'm not done with the game but I want to get a stupid tattoo or something like a cat wearing sunglasses kickfliping a slice of pizza so when I die and he takes over my stupid body he has to live with that stupid tattoo and look at it every day God I hate this guy he was a bag of dicks all the way to the end and even in cyber brain ghost form. Absolutely fuck him what a raging cunt.
*takes your cock out of my mouth* No exactly, capitalism is a rot within society that kills off our empathy and desire to work together with our fellow man. Dearest, I find myself once again on my knees, hoping to scratch your brain for any crumbs of The Old Way universe. Just, have you had any thoughts on that au of how the characters are, what they're up to, or what dynamics have been built or are/would be shaping up to be?
I'm the same anon that asked a while ago and truly ignore this if this too much or annoying. I was just hoping if you could spare any crumbs of your goregous, genius mind. ilysm đ§ââď¸đ (also I'm in love with how you wrote priest/vamp price, amazing work on that!)
Hey anon! Iâm so glad you liked vampire priest price! He was a fun one.
As for The Old Way, boy howdy, do I have thoughts!
Cause like, chapter two is obviously a hyper realistic exposition on the actual tradition of the bonded mating ritual between reader and Price, right?
Maybe this is a hear me out moment, but Omegaverse fics intrigue me for three main reasons which I will outline below and elaborate on in way too much detail:
1. The fuck-or-die element of the heat/rut cycle
2. The fantastical/unrealistic physical stretch required to take a knot
3. The fantastical/unrealistic duration (and lack of a refractory period) that a knot remains inside of its hole
To clarifyâŚ
As for the first, this is the true animalistic element, imo. And whatâs hotter than sexual need, right? Like the feeling of sexual starvation being sated??? It makes my brain turn into literal mush. The first bite of food after a fast. The first sip of cool water after a march through the desert. The first gasp of air after swimming up from the deepest depths. The first touch of skin on naked skin when youâve been writhing and needing and alone. Ugh. Fuck me up with that shit.
As for the second, I mean this is sort of personal preference and self-explanatory but Iâm a girth>length fan. As is immediately obvious when you read anything Iâve written. But specifically in this fic; hereâs a man who feels unworthy of love. His fat monster cock hurt someone he cared for. As fun as it is to haul around the State Fair Blue Ribbon schlong, no one likes being left out (or 13th-wheeling in Priceâs case). And when he finds his glass slipper of a mate, he feels whole again. She saves him, and she saves the day, and itâs the happily ever after of my dreams. Yay, love!
But. Hereâs the kicker. Number three. Number three keeps me up at night, yâall. It plagues me. Itâll sneak into my thoughts while Iâm in the middle of my daily tasks, sucker-punching me right in the chest. Idk about other Omegaverses, but the idea that we could be stretched out and stuck on John Priceâs Texas-sized dong for hours (and that there is a fantastical/unrealistic element of a pain-free, pleasurable experience on our end?) is delicious. Imagine, heâs trapped himself deep within you, oozing hot come, giving you that incredible feeling of fullness, and you are just basking in it together, enjoying the sparkling electricity of every twitch and jerk of his phallus. Heâs reading Yeats to you and youâre grooming his soft, curling hair, heâs keeping your energy up by feeding you grapes and honey and wine and mead, heâs sharing his hand-rolled cigars with you, letting you feel the high of the nicotine and kissing you languidly, his lips so soft and pliant that you feel as if your two bodies might melt together like smooth chocolate, homogeneous in a way that no one else will ever know. All the while, your womb is full of his heavy load, stuffed and ladden with his seed, making your belly just the slightest bit round. He feels it with his wide palm, and you canât help but imagine how you might be thus revered when youâre heavy with his child instead.
And how long?? I mean, whatâs possible here â even if we abandon plausible? An hour? Two? A night? And how often? Would his rut drive him to mate with you repeatedly in a self-sacrificing/mindless sex-driven fury? Would bonded mates be capable of something more than normal ones? What are your true powers as the Apex Omega? So many questions.
So anyway. Sorry for the hear-me-out. I recognize that not everyone is as zealously curious about the implications of an Omegaverse as I am. I just think thereâs so many different ways it could go. The universe itself has so many variable possibilities and that makes it easy to create and to be creative with it. It becomes even more interesting when you compound the sexual complications with the socio-cultural context of a community dealing with that sort of hierarchical environment. Just a world of interesting knots to untangle (pun intended and weaponized).
But, Iâd also like to explore the other interpersonal relationships between our lovable companions. Whatâs Johnnyâs big loving family like? How do the kids interact with each other? Is there a leader emerging from the MacTavish clan? What about Gaz and his three Omegas? Ghost and his mini tactical squad? All of them together? What drives them to help other clans? Whatâs their underlying mission? How will they ensure peace across the land? How do they allocate the obviously limited resources?
It would be a fun project to navigate. Iâve written scenes here and there for it but Iâve gotta finish these other long WIPs before I start something else.
Thanks for asking! I hope this answered your question.

since u wanna talk about fic⌠Iâm still so crazy about ur strollonso lingerie fic, and Iâm wondering if u have any more thoughts on Lance In Panties⌠maybe more info about the first time lance dressed up like that for Fernando. like whose idea was it⌠what was he wearing⌠did Fernando buy it for him? Did Fernandoâs brain explode into a billion pieces?⌠idk I just need all your insane lance panties thoughts, if youâre interested in sharing đââď¸đ
hi Connor! <3
thank you so much for sending me this ask! I am a bit late with the reply (although I was buzzing to answer it) but alas...
I hold strollonso lingerie fic very dear to me because it was the first time of me even venturing into the themes and motives of this particular dynamic. my friends had to hold my hand firmly as I paced around the way to convey the reasons behind why Lance (it was his idea in the in-fic universe!) also kinda stepped out of his comfort zone.
I had a great conversation with my friend Logan while drafting this fic and, I think, besides Fernando's eyes comically popping out when Lance first unveiled himself like a present, this whole idea of presenting himself to Fernando in a this certain way came from a place of vulnerability. Perhaps even self-doubt because Lance was very aware of Fernando's dating history lmao and he though "hey how can I make this weird gremlin of a man stick around". so Lance kinda thought about the models Fernando dated (even though he didn't think he could compare :((( ) and voila. bough a set that did not fit well and it wasn't as good but THE REACTION. Lance was weirded the hell out at the way HE liked it, too. Fernando did not leave a single patch of his skin unmarked, unkissed or unbitten. suffice to say he has also destroyed almost every lingerie set Lance had bough (because he just HAD to ravage Lance).
now the whole feminization aspect of it... Lance likes to be Fernando's lil princess. you know that. I know that. he grew up surrounded by so much love and adoration he constantly seeks a match for it and, with Fernando, it comes with a lil bonus of feeling good while wearing lingerie (even if it's uncomfy and scratchy at times). Lance likes to be taken care of, pampered, and Fernando provides that, with or without the lingerie, but man... he goes insaaane for it, like bed-breaking chugging viagra all night all day etc. Lance got his world ROCKED....
so, to sum it up a bit â Lance got the idea, bough the first set, wrong size, first time he though a thong was a good idea LMAO that traumatized him a bit, the color was reddish (alluding to ferrari days and their first meeting...), Fernando almost had a coronary event from all of his blood rushing into his dick and they fucked so nasty the hotel had to be evacuated. but like who would blame Nando, if I saw Lance's ass wearing cute lacy panties I would check myself off this planet for real...... all that peach in soft, see-though lace... call 911.
now, tho, they totally check out stuff Lance can wear together. Fernando makes a suggestion here and there. he likes it when Lance wears white.... sometimes he outright asks Lance to wear something lacy under his clothes, even when they're out and at the end of the day Fernando, all wind up (Lance, too, admittedly) gets to unwrap a present for himself. and Lance just drown in the nicknames and dirty talk (finds it hot) the pampering... he's just out there on the bed seeing colors that don't exist, wearing the tatters of inexplicably expensive lingerie set while Fernando is drooling over him...
#i loved revisiting this omg...#strollonso#asks#pitconfirm#ficsy commentary#fic: guess my future and map it onto your fantasy

Out of curiosity if it isn't much problem, is there anything you could share about your AUs or other ideas? The one about Vee growing up in the human realm really caught my attention but I'm also curious if you are cooking something else
To be honest, I don't really have the brain power to come up with too many ideas for more than one AU. My main story, which I plan on making a fic about eventually, is called Snakes and Mirrors (where Vee gets rescued and ends up in the human realm MUCH earlier, and it's also kind of a swap au with Luz being raised in the Demon realm).
An offshoot I thought of has the older basilisks, Three and Four come with Vee to the human realm. I headcan them being only like, 5-6 years older than vee, and she's a baby at this point. So it's a couple of scared, cold little snake kids being incredibly defensive over their smaller, even more scared baby sister. Then, the three of them get discovered by Camila and Manny Noceda, and after a tense encounter, get adopted real fast.
In the main story, Vee doesn't know she's a demon. She knows she's a reptilian shapeshifter of unknown origin, and she can sniff out and consume strange energy from mystic objects, but that's it. Having siblings that are both able to remember and tell her about the Demon realm (specifically the Emperor's coven) makes her and their new parents terrified of the demon realm, given that those experiments were all the three of them really experienced.
Thirteen years passed, and Vee's older siblings have both finished high school and have begun looking into college/jobs. Vee and Masha find Eda's portal to the demon realm, and shenanigans ensue. They have a lot of assumptions about how terrible the Demon realm is, and in turn, it takes a long time for them to warm up to Eda
I'm not sure how much would change overall for the story, but I think it's an interesting concept.
There was an AU conxept post by LuminousShane about Amity being forced by Odalia into being an oracle, leading to her encountering Evelyn Clawthorne's ghost and she ends up being an actually good parental figure for Amity. I feel like I'd want to make a story exploring that premise just because I don't know if anyone else would make it into a fic. I don't actually have any ideas for it, though, just a thought.
Sorry for taking so long to get to your ask, btw. Idk what took me so long, but I will try to answer some more going forward. I am very inconsistent.

SO so ive been thinking about this post semi constantly idk why it just sort of gripped me. I was going through htn again, you know for fun, and i ran across this line during the bit where abigail and the rest of the ghosts are attempting to call the sleeper to ask what her deal is. right here harrow notices and new and probably final note from wake scrawled onto the whiteboard that hadnt been there a moment earlier:
END OF THE LINE. FALLING. OXYGEN CANâT LAST THE DISTANCE AND WONâT REDIRECT POWER FROM THE PAYLOAD. INSTEAD I WILL MAKE YOU W TCH EVER Y MOMENT AS I GET THE LAST PRIVILEGE YOU CANNOT ENJOY YOU BYGONE SON OF A BITCH. I HOPE YOUâRE BOTH AS SORRY AS I AM.
to which there is this exchange:
She had said to Ortus, âI thought the messages were hallucinations, even though I never hallucinated like that before. It was easier to believe I was succumbing to the madness again.â
âHarrow,â he had said,âI have come to the conclusion that you were never mad⌠though who can be the judge of madness?â
It seemed so much worse to her if it wasnât madness.Sheâd hate if it was under her control. She found herself saying curtly: âThen what?â
âThe mind can only take so much pressure before it forms indentations,âhe had said, meditatively. âIt is strangeâyears and years after his death, I so often heard the sound⌠the way he pushed at the handle, the way he manipulated the haft ⌠of my father, standing outside the door of my cell.â
at this point in the story, harrow is fully aware of whats going on. she can say gideons name and think about her without immediately suffering brain bleeds, she can recall the true events of canaan house and her childhood. this passage tells us she has had previous experience with hallucinations, but the ones manifesting in the river bubble were Different than how they typically manifested. we also have ortus' take on the situation which is an interesting perspective but obviously not word of god nor the opinion of a medical professional hes jsut a guy making a judgement call. HOWEVER, his judgement is coming from someone who has apparently experienced PTSD related hallucinations, obviously not caused by real hauntings but just the overwhelming fear of his own father and the cruel conditions of the ninth
my final opinion on this is while i will take WOG tamsyns opinion on harrow experiencing psychosis for what it is, in text at the very least she does seem to be certain she has experienced some sort of literal hallucinations due to the amount of sheer pressure and guilt she is constantly bearing at all times. all of gtn is from gideons perspective, she seems put together because that is a front she is putting on, especially when the majority of the book has them in close contact with other major political figures in their society, harrow cannot afford to seem unbalanced and as such spends most of her time in seclusion.
Let me just...
I don't think I've seen anyone say this about Harrow the Ninth and it has been bothering me.
The bit about Harrow being insane. The way people talk about this, they make it sound like she actually is/was insane. Sometimes people even act like she always has been insane. But there are two things happening outside of Harrow's scope of knowledge during the book that make it clear she is and always has been perfectly sane.
1) the body. It is unclear whether she's actually seeing Alecto or she's hallucinating. But I'm inclined to believe that it's really just Alecto reaching out to her through the river. During this book Harrow is tuned in to the river because she's stuck part of her brain in a bubble there without really knowing it. And I'd be willing to bet Alecto can just do that, just astral project in a way where she can observe anything she wants undetected and has been following John around like that for who knows how long. And then suddenly she comes across Harrow, who can see and hear her projection and who knows who she is (which should not be possible). I'd say this makes even more sense, considering this is the book where Harrow actually reaches out to Alecto to the point where they can swap souls around for a bit (so Nona can happen).
2) Harrow's primary manifestation of insanity in the "is this how it happened" scenes is that she can't read. And so she believes she is insane because she keeps trying to read and she's seeing the wrong things. But these aren't memories like she seems to think they are. These are dreams, a safety mechanism she's accidentally created so she can fend off Wake and prevent herself from remembering Gideon. She's pulled out part of her brain and that bit of her mind and soul is in a massive bubble in the river. When she experiences these scenes, she's asleep. And what can't people do when they're asleep? Process language correctly. This is made more clear when she's able to read correctly while awake; in particular she's able to read her letters to herself as well as the recipes in the cookbooks on the Mithreum (information she couldn't possibly hallucinate because she would have no precedent for it).
Tldr Harrow isn't actually insane. She was just being melodramatic because she couldn't figure out what was really going on.
#also calling it melodramatic feels. mean in some sense#like her reality WAS being altered it was just being done by a ghost and a medical procedure she wasnt allowed to know about#her reaction is like. completely natural#in any case i think 'character is hallucinating in a story with ghosts'#has the same problems that 'character is maori in a story where race doesnt matter and nobody knows what that means and all cultural >>#elements are explicitly western and they all speak english'#like its interesting but it cant be engaged with on a textual level bc they have different language for those things#harrow cannot talk about her issues bc frankly it kind of feels like the practice of psychiatry doesnt. exist in the houses#she calls herself 'mad' what does that. even mean#ortus asserts she isnt then his evidence is that He Too also experiences minor breaks in reality#the language is inprecise and is muddied further by circumstance we RARELY see the characters in a situation neutral enough to analyze them

Wrap me in plastic by chromance Marcus Layton old money or rich Steve. So like he asks her out on a date. He gets there early and she lets him chill in her room while she finishes getting ready. And then during their date they talk about what they want for their future. Like a big house and dogs and all that. And after their dinner they walk around downtown and he kinda spoils her with like shoes and such. Idk the song just calls out to old money Stevie

ââ 12.1.24
The engine of Steve's car died down. He looked up at the house, taking in the exterior of it. His hands were sweaty. He wouldn't tell you, but he was nervous about this. He had been for days. He'd cover it up with the confidence facade.
Wiping his hands on his slacks, he opened his car door, stepping out. He swallowed hard as he came to the door. Shaking the nerves away, he finally knocked. He waited, hearing your sweet voice through the thick wood, âOne second!â
The door finally opened; Steve looked up. He couldn't help his smile. You weren't ready yet. Your hair was half up half down, no makeup on, and a surprised look on your face. You clutched at your chest, where a fancy necklace usually resides. Your natural lips moved, but no words came out. You were acting surprised at seeing him, but he was only 5-8 minutes early.
âHi, beautiful.â
He loves when you got flustered.
âHeyâ I lost track of time. I'm sorryâyou can come in. I'm so sorry, oh my god. I'll just get ready real quick.â
He shrugged you off, âIt's not a problem. Take your time.â
âMake yourself at home!â He watched you hurry up the stairs, skipping every other step.
Closing the door, he looked around. The house was you. It smelt like you, the interior design screaming you. After looking around, admiring your decor, he made his way up the steps, following the sound of your hurried movements.
âI meant it; take your time. We can cancel the reservation and go later.â Steve leaned against the door frame, watching you move swiftly.
You stopped your movements, one eyelash coated in mascara while the other was naked. âBut you planned this. I should've been paying attention-â
âIt's fine, really. I'd like to spend some time with you before we go, anyway. If that's okay with you.â
Finishing the other eyelash, you frowned up at him. Steve pushed off the wall, walking over to you. If he thought your living room reflected you, your room was even more so.
He sat on the bed, watching you through the vanity mirror. âYou're beautiful, you know.â
âAnd you're a suck up. What, trying to get in my bed already?â
Steve had to cover his grin, feeling the duvet under his fingertips. Your bed was soft. He imagined what sleeping on it must be like.
âLooks like I've already succeeded.â
You rolled your eyes, turning your desk chair toward the bed, watching his fingers trace the softness of your blanket.
âWhat are we supposed to do about dinner?â He could see the guilt in your eyes. It really wasn't that big of a deal.
âI'll figure it out.â
You two sat in your room, exchanging playful banter and anything to dissolve the tension of a new relationship. It was easy between you two.
Steve looked up when he heard the bathroom door opening, âCan you zip me?â He felt his breath hitch. You were stunning. A strapless dress flowed down your body, flowing outward a little at the skirt. You held the front up with both of your hands, eyes not quite meeting his as he stood, walking over. You turned, providing him with access to the zipper you were able to only get halfway up your back. He made a show of zipping it, fingers lingering. He could see the flush on the back of your ears.
He leaned in, lips grazing the shell of your ear, âReady?â
You mindlessly nodded, too drunk off his touch. It wasn't even crazy, yet he had you wrapped around his finger. Fixing your hair one final time, you gathered yourself, walking toward your closet. Grabbing a pair of shoes, you made your way out of the house.
Steve was a gentleman; opening your car door, helping you get in, helping you get out, he held your hand the whole way to the restaurant, and quickly grabbed it again going into the said restaurant.
He had manners, which was rare to find.
He was interested in what you had to say. He had a sense of humor. God, what wasn't perfect about him?
âWhat about you?â Steve brought his glass to his lips, eyebrows raised. The lights of the fancy restaurant illuminated his facial features. He looked handsome. âWhat does the future hold for you?â
You laid your hands on the table in front of you, biting your bottom lip in thought. âI don't really know. As a kid, I had the same future plans as any little girl. I guess most of that stayed with me. The two story house with a big yard for children to play and a white picket fence. A dog that would run around with the kids and play fetch. But life might have different plans.â
He placed his glass down, nodding. Life was full of curveballs. He'd know first hand, with his parents, and how he had to grow up.
âHow many kids do you want?â
He smiled when you didn't hesitate to answer. âTwo. Preferably close in age so they can grow up close and have stuff in common.â
âSo you have thought about this since you were little?â
âOf course. Didn't you?â
Steve shook his head, âNot really. My parents wanted me to think about College and what I wanted to do for work, not how I wanted my house to look or how many dogs I wanted.â
âYou have time to think about it now.â You said softly, bringing your hands up to prob your head on as you looked at him.
âTrue,â He grinned, copying you and looking at you with as much adoration as you were looking at him with. âI'd like a two story house too. A big yard seemed nice. We'll just have to see what the future holds.â
Breaking eye contact, you tried not to freak out over how he said âweâ. As in, you and him. Grabbing your glass of wine, you let it coat your throat, ignoring his eyes on you as you chugged what was left.
As you got ready to leave, Steve paid and walked out with your hand in his. He squeezed it before he left go to open your door.
It wasn't that late after dinner. The sun was just now setting over the horizon. âWhat now?â
âWhat do you want to do?â
âYou're the one who asked me out if I remember correctly. I think that means you're the one who has to pick.â
He started the buckling his seatbelt. âOkay, fine. How aboutâŚwe go shopping? A new store just opened up downtown. I think you'll like it.â
You looked over at him, like really looked. His hands flexed against the steering wheel as he reversed in the parking spot. He had tan slacks on, a slick dark brown leather belt, a dress shirt, with a tan sweater on top. His cuffs were folded, showing off the curves and softness of his hands and wrists. His wristwatch dazzled in the lights of the city. His hair was styled nicely, obviously held up by strong hairspray.
Feeling your eyes on him, Steve brought his hand over the center console, stretching it across your thigh. Getting a butterfly effect in your stomach, you laid a hand over him, looking out the window as he drove.
The drive was quiet, but it was nice.
Steve parked, just basking in the moment. He's never felt this content on a date before. You looked at all the people walking on the sidewalk with bags in their hands. This was on the âbougieâ side of town, and the people walking around showed it with how they carried themselves. Bright lights lit up the town, iridescent lights shining from storefronts. Checking his watch, he unbuckled, before running around to your side and opening your door.
Thanking him with a smile, you let him take your hand, running across the street to get to the new store.
Once inside, you gawked at everything it had to offer. From expensive jackets and shirts to purses and jewelry. They were pretty, but become a lot less when you turned the price tag around. Steve noticed, going behind you to look at the tag for himself. He noticed when you nearly had heart eyes looking at a pair of high heels. They were pretty, he'd give it to you. Maybe it was the red bottoms that caught your eye, or the color that coated the rest of the shoe. Coincidentally, it matched your dress, and the red of the bottom matched your nail polish. It just matched. A lot better than the shoes you had on. He watched as you put off looking at the price tag, almost scared of what it would be.
âGet them.â
You looked up, brought out of your trance.
âAre you crazy?â You looked between him and the shoes. âThese are worth more than me.â
Chuckling, he shook his head. âThat's impossible, seeing as you're priceless.â
Scrunching up your nose at his cringy response, you just stared at him. "I was just looking at them."
âI'll buy them for you.â
You instantly shook your head, putting the shoes back. âNo. No, I can't let you do that. You already bought dinner.â
He stepped forward, his arm grabbing the shoes from behind you. âI insist. Plus, I'm the one who asked you on the date. It's practically law that I pay for everything. I am a gentleman, after all.â
You grabbed at the shoe, but he moved away. âSteve, come on. This is ridiculous. I'd rarely ever wear them anyway.â
âYou can wear them on our next date.â
You couldn't help the smile spreading on your face, âAre you asking me out on another date?â
He shrugged with a smirk on his face, and turned to walk toward the checkout.
Walking behind him, you glanced into the glass counter, where jewelry laid, sparking in the lights. All different shapes, gems, and pieces.
Steve turned back to you, feeling your body behind him. Even if you only looked at the glass counter for a split second, his eyes scanned your jewelry, seeing if you wore gold or silver.
Let's just say you came out of the store with not only a pair of high heels, but also a new bracelet. You could tell Steve he didn't have to do that for the rest of your lives, but Steve would insist. Soon, you'd realize gift giving was his love language.
The cup of hot chocolate warmed your hands in the chilly night air. Steve had stopped by a diner that he went to regularly and had a nice elderly woman make it.
Steve walked beside you on the sidewalk that led to your house, your bags in his hand. He walked you to your door, hand moving to your back when you turned toward him.
âI had fun tonight. Thank you.â
Steve playfully scoffed, handing you the bags. âI had fun too. Maybe next time you can decide what we do.â
âYeah, sure. I'll make sure to bring my wallet so I can buy you some heels as well.â
âOh, yeah. Black's my color, by the way.â
âNoted. Although, I think it would be cute if we matched.â
Your cheeks hurt from smiling all night.
Before you knew it, Steve was leaning in, his lips softly meeting yours. He tasted the hot chocolate on your lips, but he wasn't complaining.
Pulling back for air, you looked across his face. The chilly air nipped at his nose and cheeks, a light pink hue taking over. It only darkened after you had kissed.
Leaning up, you pecked his lips again, body staying close. âThanks for everything.â
He didn't reply, only closing the gap once again.
Before anything got too heated, you lightly patted his chest, pulling away with a giddy smile. âIt's getting late.â
He nodded, acknowledging what you said but still looking at your kiss-swollen lips.
âSteve,â you whined, licking your lips out of habit.
âYeah, yeah.â He looked into your eyes, smiling at you. âHow does Friday sound?â
âI think I'm free, but I'll check my calendar.â
âAlright,â He let go of you, moving his hand away from your back, watching as you stepped closer to your door. â Can't wait.â
You watched as he walked backwards down the walkway. â Goodnight, Steve.â
â Goodnight. I'm just going to go look into two story houses. I'll get back to you.â
You laughed, looking at him over your shoulder as you unlocked the door. â Yeah, right.â
He got in his car, waiting for you to get in your house before he left, not being able to contain the giddy feeling. Friday couldn't come fast enough.

Dating Jake is like a bliss. He's protective and overall a nice decent man. Everyone knows this and put faith on him whilst looking out for him. In return they look out for each other. It's what you love about Big Deal.
Despite his insecurities regarding his fears of becoming his father, you are always there to remind him otherwise. Even before your relationship became official, your words just seems to affect him differently in a way he can't decipher. Regardless he was very much thankful of you. And he never forget to repay your kindness.
So when you two took your relationship on the next level, he was over the top anxious. Ecstatic but anxious. He wants to treat you good, like you're deserving. Even for your presence alone. Even if he knew you are already familiar with the gangsters life, that didn't stop him from worrying than he let on. And you're no fool, he can't even hide it. The whole crew knew his antics by now. Stupid habit of his of overthinking the what ifs and whatnot. Sometimes it's up to you to snap him out.
You try to keep the relationship low-key. You know everyone is happy for you both but you took consideration to respect them and only be lovey-dovey when you're alone. It wasn't a challenge to you, but it is to Jake. This man can't even stop stealing glances at you. His fingers always fidgeting, itching to just hold your hand. It's adorable. Especially when he try to act serious, but he's secretly crumbling inside. Not when you're just standing there looking all pretty and invested to the things he's saying.
He was holding his dear life not to smile when he notices you were looking. He's so whipped it's crazy. This man just can't shut up about you. Basically whatever basic thing there is about you, he knew. And when he knew so does the crew. When you're not here with him, he turned into a sad puppy, though try to hide it by acting leaderly â which he fails pathetically. So now which bring us back to the present.
It's only been a day and he haven't heard a word from you. Been a day since his supposed half brother made an appearance. He started to get worried but Jerry kept convinced him that he's overreacting and that you're very much fine. He looked back at the screen of your private chat where his text was left unread.
His mind starts to ponder. What if you're in danger and couldn't reach out? No, no he mustn't think that way. You can take care of yourself. He wants to believe that. You're no damsel in distress, he knows this. Then why does it takes you to long to reply? He understands you have responsibility to take care of. Maybe he should pay you a visit instead? You wouldn't mind, right? He's just being a good boyfriend.
Boyfriend.
The word still feels foreign to him. Yet it feels right. He's becoming soft. For you. And he likes that. He likes that he likes you. Or better, he loves you.
He groaned softly, brushing his face with his calloused palm as he thinks about it. He realised he have yet to drop the L bomb towards you. He thought it's too soon and it would scare you away. But he have known you enough. From your worst fears to the thinks that ridiculously would make you peeved. It wouldn't be so wrong after all. At least he's confident enough to know that your feelings for him are one hundred percent mutual.
But then what caused you to ignore his texts? It was so unlike you. You can't be possibly be mad at him, would you? Last time you depart, nothing was left on a bad term. There he is again with his fucked up brain. His brows are knitted so tightly he could get a headache.
Meanwhile, somewhere in a convenient store, you were half aware of running late to see Jake. You cursed your phone charger for this. You kept a mental note to buy a new wire at the same time but choosing specific snacks is also completely out of your ordeal today. Tapping your chin rhythmically in the snack isle, your eyes moves back and forth as your mind decides aimlessly for you.
"You been standing there for 10 minutes."
The voice caught your attention, you were surprised by the presence of the former President of the Workers towering next to you. Your expression relaxed immediately.
"What's it to you?"
Samuel scoffed, reaching for a packet M&M from the shelf for himself. "You two disgusted me."
You raised your brow. His eyes rolled behind his glasses at your confusion. "Well what'd you know? Smartass and dumbass together. Perfect couple beyond compare."
You let out a flat "Oh." comprehending his previous words. "Thanks." Your tone spoke speak sarcasm. He sneered, "No seriously, you guys are matched made in heaven I could literally just-" He leaned forwards, hovering his two fingers in front of his mouth and feign a gag.
He chuckled after you gave an unamused look. "You're just pissed-"
"Woah, hey there." He raised his hands mockingly, "Don't go flattering yourself. I can judge you, especially him as much as I fucking want."
"Not like I got anything better to do with my life. Your standards must be that low, it's almost believable." He muttered passed you to the drinks section. You decided to ignore him, grabbing whatever appeals to you before making your way to the cashier.
Samuel rendezvous with you shortly with his own items after and pulled out extra cash. The knowing glance from the cashier goes unnoticed by you due to your gazed being pinned towards Samuel. He ignored you as he payed for your stuff. When you exited the store, you thanked him even though he left without a bothering himself to reply.
By the time you got to Big Deal's turf, Jake was fast asleep waiting for you. Your eyes softened seeing him snoozing softly. Your fingers gently brushing between black locks which then startled him by reflex. Once he realised it's you, he sighed in relief. You chuckled with amusement.
Your laughter brought him back with him. His eyes widened as he pulled you against him with a loving embrace. "Oh shit."
"Fuck, I was worried about you." He sharply inhaled your scent, cupping your face and kissed anywhere on your face except your lips. "Worried? For nothing?" The corner of your lips curled.
He pulled back to look at you with offense, "For nothing? You're worth every punches."
"Corny." You uttered.
His raised his hands with apolagy, "I know, I know." before sets them back on your sides, "I just thought you...you know?" He trailed, patting your sides with acknowledgement.
You raised a brow while pulling a small grin, "Wow, I really made you worried, huh?" He wanted to wipe that amusement off your face but seeing you in such a good mood, equals good sign, he can't help but to match. "Hey, my masculinity isn't fragile. I'm allowed to ask."
Always have fond of his humour, you let out a soft snicker, "Right, excuse me."
Waving his hand dismissively, he asked, "Nevermind that. Something happened?"
You sighed, "Phone dead. Sorry about that." He sighed in relief at your answer before beckoning you to the couch and get comfortable with him, to which you obliged without a complain. "You?" You asked back, "Don't tell me you're just being a potato couch." You ruffled his hair, "Kidding. You deserve it anyway."
He scoffed, "If anything I looked like a wet dog. " He sighed, "But, no. You're right. I've been stressing out."
"Oh." You tilted your head, your tone with a hint of sympathy and understanding. You softly brushed his hair back affectionately. His shoulders relaxed as he leaned in your touch. "Not that kind. It's just-"
You cut him off, "No, I get it."
He shook his head, "No. Not that. There's something else happened yesterday. The half brother showed up here. We talked."
Now this caught your attention. Your brows lit up. "You're serious?" He nodded as a respond.
You scooped closer to him, "Well damn. What happened? What was he like? Does he looked like you? Scary-looking? Was anyone hurt?" You asked each one by one patiently.
Jake chuckled at your constant questions. His face showed gratitude upon your understanding. "No, we're fine. At least." You frowned slightly, knowing what he meant by that. Meaning that the guy's intention is still unknown. And it's not a good sign.
Knowing Jake most likely have a lot in his mind already, you decided to push the thought away and help him have his mind at peace. Whatever it was, that's a problem for another day. You nudged him, "Hey, next time he come back I'll be there with you, yeah?"
Now it's his turn to frown. Again, he didn't doubt your skills but putting yourself in danger feels wrong. You have already read his mind based on his face expression so you just pinched his nose gently. "Aigoo, kenchana. It's your call anyway. I won't get involved if you won't let me." Your hand move to his cheek, pinching them slightly with care, "Adding more mess into your head is the least thing I wanna do anyway."
He chuckled at your gestures, his cheeks turned a hint of pink. "Thanks, yeobo." And wrapped his arm around your shoulder, pulling you both back against the couch.
He turned his head to you, "You're my world, you know that?" He cut you off, rolling his eyes before you could utter, "Yes, corny. Whatever. Deal with it. Alright?" He gestured with his hands, "You gotta deal with this...big deal you know what I mean?" And as soon as those words came out of his mouth you bursted into laughter. He can't help but laugh with you, realizing how bad the phrase was to him but he was proud anyway that it got you to laugh.
"C'mere you." He pulled you closer, squeezing you lovingly. "What the hell am I gonna do with you?" You nuzzled your cheek on his, "I brought snacks. We can binge watch that one K-drama I've been telling."
Jake nodded with agreement, "Sure. I just want you to stay." As you stood up and took off your jacket, leaving you with undershirt. While you looked for the show in your phone, he looked through the plastic bag and took the snacks and drinks out only to pause his action for a moment.
He blinked, chuckling a bit then looked at you. "Oh. I didn't know we have other plans in mind. Well, I suppose it best to take precaution, huh?"
You raised your brow, "What do you mean?"
When he took out an item from the plastic box, your eyes turned wide upon seeing the durex box in his hand. Your whole body turn white, only to immediate morph to tomato red. Fucking Samuel.

so much happened in this whole episode but iâm still on fig infiltrating rubenâs dream, making it look like the place where his friend was murdered, and then disguising herself as kipperlilly & repeatedly saying different variants of âsomebody needs to take the fall for this, and itâs not going to be me. itâs going to be you.â while adaine as the elven oracle shows up next to her. can you imagine waking up from that, the idea of a horrible truth being pinned on you by your friend to save her own skin while the personification of fate and destiny stands there, almost as a promise that this is GOING to happen to you. we donât even know if this kid is guilty. my god.
#fantasy high#dimension 20#fhjy#fhjy spoilers#fantasy high junior year#fig faeth#ruben hopclap#lucy frostblade#the rat grinders#adaine abernant#kipperlilly copperkettle#watching fig terrorize him like girl!!! we donât even know if heâs guilty!!!!#this might just be for me but i do not think 5 teenagers willingly brutally killed their friend idk#like there just has to be some other element to it and i am very scared to find out what that was#what if they were put in a position where they felt there was/there was no other choice⌠like oh my god#my comedy brain is having fun but my âthis is a teenagerâ brain is in such deep distress all the time this season#the rat grinders i trust brennan to not make u cartoonishly evil so i am holding u as gently as i can in my confused shaky hands#also with the devilâs nectar iâve been wondering why they all seem so well-adjusted & now iâm curious if theyâve been intentionally-#changing their memories in a way so that either the trauma is lesser or they think they arenât guilty. idk#but it seems like from how gertie was talking she was making it more recently so the well adjustedness from early jy doesnât quite add up#they could have another source maybe??? idk iâm just low stakes 4 a.m. spitballing here#thereâs also the strong possibility that theyâre aware of what happened but they werenât the ones who killed lucy. idk who knows#the way you could probably devilâs nectar yourself into believing it wasnât your fault someone died⌠CRAZY IMPLICATIONS!!! CRAZY IDEA!!!#anyways the bad kids & the rat grinders donât ever have to like each other but i do wonder if at least some of those kids deserve a chance

it is all chaos and entropy. the thing is that the chaos and entropy make it beautiful and lovely.
yes, it's true that nature and the universe are uncaring and unspecific, and that is terrifying. i have lived through some of the unfairness - i got born like this, with my body caving into itself, with this ironic love of dance when i sometimes can't stand up for longer than 15 minutes. i am a poet with hands that are slowly shutting down - i can't hold a pen some days. recently i found a dead bird on our front porch. she had no visible injuries. she had just died, the way things die sometimes.
it is also true that nature and the universe are uncaring and unspecific, and that is wonderful. the sheer happenstance that makes rain turn into a rainbow. the impossible coincidence of finding your best friend. i have made so many mistakes and i have let myself down and i have harmed other people by accident. nature moves anyway. on the worst day of my life she delivers me an orange juice sunset, as if she is saying try again tomorrow.
how vast and unknowing the universe! how small we are! isn't that lovely. the universe has given us flowers and harp strings and the shape of clouds. how massive our lives are in comparison to a grasshopper. the world so bright, still undiscovered. even after 30 years of being on this earth, i learned about a new type of animal today: the dhole.
chance echoing in my life like a harmony between two people talking. do you think you and i, living in different worlds but connected through the internet - do you think we've ever seen the same butterfly? they migrate thousands of miles. it's possible, right?
how beautiful the ways we fill the vastness of space. i love that when large amounts of people are applauding in a room, they all start clapping at the same time. i love that the ocean reminds us of our mother's heartbeat. i love that out of all the colors, chlorophyll chose green. i love the coincidences. i love the places where science says i don't know, but it just happens.
"the universe doesn't care about you!" oh, i know. that's okay. i care about the universe. i will put my big stupid heart out into it and watch the universe feast on it. it is not painful. it is strange - the more love you pour into the unfeeling world, the more it feels the world loves you in return. i know it's confirmation bias. i think i'm okay if my proof of kindness is just my own body and my own spirit.
i buried the bird from our porch deep in the woods. that same day, an old friend reaches out to me and says i miss you. wherever you go, no matter how bad it gets - you try to do good.
#writeblr#warm up#i can't write rn but i have SO much words in here bc im reading the chorus of dragons books#(just started book 4)#and this woman's writing is just LIVING in my brain. let me out!!!#(i read roughly like 2-4 books a week usually bc i go on long walks with my dog but when a book is REALLY good like. it eats my life. )#anyway ...... so like here's a story that idk i've tried to explain to other people as being wild#but maybe im the only one who thinks it is wild???#so i play pokemon go (i just started in jan) bc i love pokemon and as i have mentioned i walk goblin for like an hour in the morning#and i don't like a lot of fitness trackers due to the fact it makes me .sad. but i also wanted the little digital rewards. enter pokemon go#anyway so they make you make friends to complete quests. so i used a reddit thread. i do not usually use reddit. i don't have an acct#i lurked. i just googled like ''pokemon go reddit '' and randomly added a bunch of numbers#i was on that page for all of 15 minutes. there are THOUSANDS of responses on that page.#here's what's wild: in that group of people. even though i am not on reddit and it was one random event once#it turns out one of those people lives in the town i live in. or at least very close. i only know this because#when we send each other gifts. it's from the same freaking area.#i can't ask them to meet up bc pokemon go doesn't have a messaging app lol but like . what are the fucking chances that#a random person posts in a random reddit thread and HAPPENS to get added by someone ELSE from their SAME TOWN#who by pure fucking CHANCE is ALSO playing pokemon go and looking for friends#i googled it there's only 42000 people in my broad region. the .......... smallness ! of the world!!!

#star wars#the original trilogy#boba fett#darth vader#hi. sorry for star war jumpscare. genuinely#i feel like ive kinda been on an art hiatus lately due to health stuff#i got diagnosed with a parathyroid disease recently (wahoo) so now i know why i have been feeling so bad! need more tests though#anyway. in the mean time most of the entertainment my brain can handle has been like. youtube clip compilations of shows and movies#not even the actual shows or movies. literally just sections of them on youtube#i wish i was joking#the only reason i know what happens in succession is because i have watched it in disjointed order in youtube compilations. not joking#anyway so ive learned a lot more about star wars than i ever. thought i would#mostly just the original trilogy and prequels. some of the old comics & books are interesting too#(sick to my stomach) i like darth vader he has like the same personality as ganondorf except he had no good reason for doing anything#when vader/anakin does literally anything weird or unacceptable it like. makes me laugh so hard its like jerma when he sees a car accident#boba fettâs costume design has been rotating in my head a lot too itâs very good#heâs very colorful and like. matte/unpolished compared to vader and it makes them a cool duo visually#those 2 are my favorites. vader why is the space cowboy the only person aside from sidious or tarkin who is allowed to get mad at you#sidious is my 3rd favorite. he sucks so bad as like a person that you just. you have no expectations of him except just being evil#so its just really funny like everything he does is horrible and heâs so happy all the time like good for him#iâm making it sound like ive never seen star wars before. i have i just never really cared about it until i got an endocrine disorder lmao#but yeah idk art may continue to be slow while im figuring out treatment stuff#if anyone reading this also has or has had hyperparathyroidism im wishing the strength & radiance of 1000 beautiful horses upon you

So we know that Taishenâs healing magic makes the target feel warm, inside and out, like drinking a hot drink on a cold day. So what if Jornirâs healing magic was the inverse?
Like, Jornirâs healing magic is cold. Like enjoying a cold treat on a hot day. Or applying an ice pack on inflammation. Itâs not freezing, by any means, but noticeably cold. It makes you feel cold, but not in a way thatâll damage you. JustâŚcold.
Also, this is kinda irrelevant but for some reason my brain is also supplying me what their respective healing magics would taste like, if you could taste them.
But like, I imagine Taishenâs healing magic would taste like chai tea, perhaps. Maybe not chai, exactly, but if you were to taste Taishenâs magic, you could taste hints of cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, etc. Basically the taste of fall. It would taste as warm as it feels, ya get me?
Likewise, Jornirâs healing magic would taste like peppermint. It tastes sweet, but comes with the unmistakable cold feeling in your mouth that the menthol within causes. It essentially just tastes like winter.
Idk, my brain latched onto Taishen and Jornir all of a sudden and like I just. Want to talk about them. And how theyâre like. Polar opposites in so many ways. But so alike in others. I just. They make me unwell.
#legends of avantris#icebound#taishen fireblossom#jornir#idk why my brain wanted to associate tastes with their magics#like I donât think you can even taste healing magic#so why the fuck would I assign a taste to them???#also I know that if I were to assign Taishen a season it would be summer#but like taste wise he would taste like fall. just all nice and warm and cozy ya know?#idk what Iâm saying anymore
