Also I have no idea what people do on New Year’s Eve or whatever so I’m just making stuff up, glowsticks and funny glasses galore. I think he would look so dumb in them <33

Blanket spread out, mozzie repellent on, and less than 5 minutes until midnight. When your friends had begged you to join them out here, you were already torn between deciding whether to stay up into the new year, or finally catch up on some of the sleep you’ve been missing.

But eventually it came down to wanting to be in the company of your friends. Between their jobs and volleyball games, you didn’t get much time to spend with all of them at the same time, so an opportunity like this was just too good to miss.

4 Minutes left and everyone had settled down, well, except for Koganegawa, who may have have a tiny bit too much to drink and would rather keep getting up to change seats than just get comfy.

You sat to the edge of the blanket, listening to the rest of their soft conversations and fighting off the tiredness that was steadily creeping up on you. Futakuchi was next to you, discussing something that sounded like volleyball tactics to Aone, who sat to his left, while Kogane kept butting in with stories of things that had happened in the Sendai Frogs; like the time Kyotani had accidentally broken Tsukishima’s glasses and they refused to talk to each other for almost the entire week.

3 Minutes left. Someone had pulled out some glowsticks apparently, and Futakuchi had turned to you to give you a glowstick bracelet.

“Geez you look tired,’ he commented as you slipped the glowsticks over your wrist. “Just don’t go falling asleep on me, ok?”

“Oh don’t worry, your annoying voice is gonna keep me awake just fine.” You both grin at the mutual teasing and he turns away to grab more glowsticks off Aone, who is methodically cracking them to make a necklace.

2 Minutes.

You couldn’t help but to stare at Futakuchi. Maybe it was the tiredness building up, or maybe the bit of alcohol you had had, but in the soft neon glow surrounding him, he looked beautiful. The soft curves of his nose and lips, the slight fluffiness of his hair, and even the dumb novelty ‘end of year’ glasses he was wearing.

He’d been one of your best friends for some time now, but lately even the most mundane things seemed exciting when he was around.

The non-stop playful banter whenever you went shopping together; the way he would rant to you about about an annoying customer at his job. You had found yourself looking forward to any interactions with him.

60 Seconds.

“Ooh someone’s got a staring problem!” Kogane slumped down beside you, throwing his long arm over your shoulder and pulling you close. “You should take a picture. It lasts longer~“

You shoved him lightly, not like you would’ve been able to move him anyway. “Shut up, I wasn’t staring.” Lowering your voice, you hoped he would do the same to not risk Futakucki listening in on your conversation. Kogane just shrugged, throwing you a knowing smile as he lifted himself up to go bother someone else.

Shaking your head to clear your thoughts you began to hear people from other nearby blankets counting down the seconds as your friends began to join them.

“10!”

“9!”

“8!”

Blankets rustled softly as you glanced at Futakuchi taking a quick sip from the bottle in his hands.

“7!”

“6!”

His eyes met yours for a moment and he joined in the countdown with a wide smile.

“5!”

“4!”

Your fingers brushed against his where they lay on the blanket. His hand twitched, but he didn’t move away.

“3!”

You caught his eyes again, and this time you could see the shine in them, even behind his dumb novelty glasses. And you didn’t miss the way his stare flickered down to your lips.

“2!”

He hesitated. But a solid nudge from Aone had him leaning in towards your face. Your hand gently grabbing his.

“1!”

His lips met yours. Clumsily and quickly, but perfect none the less.

“HAPPY NEW YEAR!”

Fireworks exploded in front of you, bathing Futakuchi in more of those pretty coloured glows. He pulled back, an almost invisible flush to his cheeks.

Aone hummed, as if to say ‘you’re welcome’ and Futakuchi made a mental note to talk to him later about not pressuring people into stuff, all the while he gently tugged you to sit closer to him. Mumbling softly, “I won’t mind if you wanna fall asleep now.”

And you knew you had made the best choice in going out with them tonight.
